I Tried Wandering Bear Coffee and Here’s What Happened

side of wandering bear coffee

Have you ever found yourself rummaging through your kitchen in the morning, yearning for a quick yet high-quality cup of iced coffee to kick-start your day?

As a busy mom of two and also training for a marathon , I’ve often wished for a convenient solution that doesn’t compromise on the fresh, robust taste of a coffee-shop brew. The dilemma of time versus quality can feel like choosing between a peaceful morning run or a tantrum-free school drop-off.

Enter Wandering Bear Iced Coffee .

I have been seeing ads all over my Facebook feed for this coffee and recently decided to order some to see if it lives up to the hype.

In this blog post, I’ll share with you my experience and if the coffee is worth ordering.

About Wandering Bear Coffee

My experience and review, packaging and design, price and value, pros and cons, the verdict, frequently asked questions.

If you’re looking for a delicious and convenient coffee option, Wandering Bear Coffee might be just what you need.

This New York-based company offers a range of high-quality coffee products that are perfect for busy coffee lovers.

Company History

Wandering Bear Coffee was founded in 2014 by two friends, Matt Bachmann and Ben Gordon. The company started as a cold brew coffee stand at a farmers’ market in New York City and quickly gained a following for its delicious and smooth coffee.

In 2016, Wandering Bear Coffee launched its first product line, which included cold brew coffee in a box. The company’s products are now available in retailers across the United States (mainly on the East and West Coasts) as well as on Amazon and their own website .

side of wandering bear coffee

As any busy parent can relate, I’m always on the hunt for shortcuts to simplify my day without compromising on quality.

Whether it’s a new workout routine on the Peloton or a family-friendly meal prepping hack, I’m all in.

So, when I kept seeing ads on Facebook for Wandering Bear Iced Coffee , specifically their tantalizing Coconut flavor, it felt like the universe was sending me a sign. I love coconut iced coffee, so I knew I had to try it!

The promise of a convenient, coffee-shop quality brew right from my fridge was too good to pass up.

Ordering (or Attempting To)

With high hopes and a serious need for caffeine, I ventured onto their website, ready to place my order. But unfortunately, the Coconut flavor was nowhere to be found on the site. The dream of tropical coffee bliss was starting to seem more like a mirage.

After reaching out to customer service, they informed me that their seasonal flavors tend to sell out quickly – a testament to their popularity, but a disappointment for latecomers like myself, especially since they were running an ad campaign.

But I wasn’t ready to abandon ship just yet.

I decided to go with their Black Iced Coffee, hoping it could at least fill the void left by the elusive Coconut flavor. And oh boy, did it deliver!

wandering bear container on a shelf

Tasting the Coffee

Upon tasting it, the richness and depth of flavor were instantly noticeable. The smoothness was reminiscent of the cold brew from my favorite coffee shop, and it was certainly stronger than the coffee I whip up with my Nespresso.

This wasn’t just some off-the-shelf iced coffee; this was a high-quality brew that could hold its own.

Aside from the remarkable taste, the convenience of having this box in my fridge cannot be overstated. With a whopping 16 cups in each box, I found myself set for a good while.

And the price tag?

At $28.99 per box, each 16 oz pour works out to be just $1.81 – way cheaper than a trip to the coffee shop where I’m paying over $4 for a cup of cold brew.

So, despite the initial setback with the Coconut flavor, Wandering Bear’s Black Iced Coffee has proven to be a worthy addition to my fridge , promising a quick, delicious start to my busy mornings.

Now, as a coffee lover, you and I both know that great taste is only part of the equation. We also care about the packaging, convenience, and, crucially, the freshness of our beloved brew.

In these aspects, Wandering Bear doesn’t just wander – it strides confidently.

The packaging design of Wandering Bear Iced Coffee screams modern, clean, and functional. The box itself has a minimalist vibe with a cheeky bear logo, clearly reflecting the brand’s laid-back yet bold personality. It’s also pretty compact, so it doesn’t take up too much precious space in the fridge.

opening wandering bear tap

It’s a fun addition to the fridge and a great conversation starter when friends drop by for a visit.

But the real show-stopper is the in-built tap. It’s a game-changer for those of us accustomed to fumbling with jars and containers in the early morning hours.

wandering bear coffee inside a fridge

Just place the box in your fridge, and the tap is ready to dispense your fresh iced coffee whenever you need it.

No fuss, no mess, just a steady stream of chilled, aromatic coffee at your fingertips.

Even better, the tap system ensures your coffee stays fresh for 30 days . That’s right, a whole month of delicious coffee-shop quality cold brew right in your own home.

It’s a testament to the brand’s commitment to delivering quality and convenience hand in hand.

However, if you’re thinking, “A whole box is too much for me,” Wandering Bear has got you covered. They also offer single-serve options that provide the same quality brew in a smaller, equally convenient package.

It’s evident that Wandering Bear caters to all kinds of coffee drinkers, ensuring we all get to enjoy their exceptional coffee, regardless of our consumption habits.

outside of wandering bear box

All in all, Wandering Bear has thoughtfully designed its packaging to be as consumer-friendly as possible, making it easier than ever to enjoy a fresh, high-quality iced coffee at home, anytime you want.

Convenience and quality – now that’s a combination that’s hard to resist!

  • DELICIOUS, SMOOTH COLD BREW COFFEE: Coffee shop quality cold brew coffee at the push of a button. Suprisingly smooth. We are pretty sure this is the best cold brew coffee on the market; so sure, that we guarantee your 100% satisfaction with all of our products. Just get in touch!
  • STAYS FRESH AFTER OPENING: Our packaging is designed to keep your cold brew fresh for up to 30 days after you tap the box by keeping air and light away from your cold brew.
  • EXTRA STRONG: Our cold brew has 150 mg of caffeine per 6 oz. serving. That’s two espresso shots right there. And you get about 16 glasses of cold brew in the 96oz box.
  • SHELF-STABLE: Our cold brew can be kept at room temperatures until after you open it. This means you can buy in bulk and store it.

Wandering Bear Coffee

When it comes to the cost of Wandering Bear Iced Coffee, I’ll admit, the initial price tag might make you do a double take. But, when you consider the quality, convenience, and pure deliciousness of this coffee, the numbers begin to make sense.

Let’s start with the basics: you can choose to buy individual boxes or opt for a bundle, where buying more saves you more. It’s a neat option for the caffeine-obsessed among us, or if you’re thinking of splitting the cost with a friend or two.

And let’s not forget about the membership option. For a small annual fee, you’re granted early access to sales and those enticing limited edition flavors.

Imagine having first dibs on the holiday Peppermint Mocha or the tantalizing Coconut before everyone else!

As for the smaller quantities, they offer compact cartons and single serves, perfect for the occasional iced coffee drinker or if you’re looking to add some variety to your caffeine routine.

And here’s where it really pays off: their subscribe and save option. You can arrange for monthly deliveries of your favorite brew and save 10% while doing so.

The cherry on top?

You don’t have to fret about storage. Unopened coffee can be kept at room temperature until you’re ready to indulge.

While Wandering Bear Iced Coffee may seem pricier than your average off-the-shelf iced coffee, the value you’re getting in return is substantial. This is a high-end, coffee shop quality brew, conveniently boxed and ready to pour whenever you need that caffeine fix.

Factor in the taste, convenience, and the variety of options available, and you’ve got yourself a pretty sweet deal.

Currently Wandering Bear has the following flavors available:

Straight Black

Dirty Vanilla Chai

Peppermint Mocha (seasonal)

Pumpkin Spice (seasonal)

Almond Armaretto (seasonal)

Toasted Coconut (seasonal)

They’re always adding new seasonal flavors to the rotation so keep an eye on their website.

Let’s boil down my Wandering Bear Iced Coffee experience into a list of pros and cons to help you decide whether it’s right for you:

Here are a few pros of Wandering Bear coffee:

The coffee itself is top-notch. It’s smooth, strong, and delivers a flavorful punch that rivals a coffee shop cold brew.

Convenience

The fridge-ready box with a built-in tap means you have fresh iced coffee on demand, whenever you need it.

It’s fun and modern, adding a little whimsy to your refrigerator landscape. Plus it doesn’t take up too much space!

The tap system ensures your coffee stays fresh for up to 30 days once opened.

Serving Size Options

From a hefty 96 oz box to 32 oz cartons and 12 oz single serves, they cater to a variety of needs.

Despite the higher initial cost, the per-serving price rivals that of many premium coffees.

Membership Benefits

Early access to sales, secret menu items, and limited edition flavors.

The coffee doesn’t need to be refrigerated until it’s ready to use, saving you valuable fridge space.

While there are a lot of pros, let’s take a look at a few of the cons of Wandering Bear Coffee.

Seasonal Flavors Availability

Their limited edition flavors sell out quickly. This might be disappointing if you’re eager to try a specific flavor, though membership can alleviate this problem.

For some, the initial price might seem high, although the overall value considering quality, convenience, and per-serving cost is excellent.

Website Navigation

While this didn’t affect my overall experience, the initial difficulty finding the desired flavor on their site is worth mentioning, especially since they’re advertising it.

Overall, I found the pros significantly outweigh the cons.

Wandering Bear Iced Coffee is a quality product that offers an excellent balance of convenience, taste, and value, especially for those of us who crave a good cup of iced coffee to kick-start our busy days.

wandering bear coffee nutrition

To wrap it all up, my experience with Wandering Bear Iced Coffee has been overwhelmingly positive.

Despite some initial hiccups in the ordering process and a higher-than-average price tag, the taste, quality, and convenience offered by Wandering Bear make it a clear winner in my book.

The fun, eco-friendly packaging and the ease of having a fresh, delicious iced coffee on tap right from my fridge far outweigh the cons.

And let’s not forget about the excellent value you get in the long run, not just in terms of cost per serving but also the time and energy saved from brewing or making that daily coffee shop run.

Plus, with the additional benefits of the membership, Wandering Bear makes it easy for all coffee enthusiasts to enjoy premium, coffee-shop quality cold brew from the comfort of their own homes.

So if you’re in the market for a convenient, high-quality iced coffee solution, I recommend giving Wandering Bear a try.

After all, who wouldn’t want to start their day off on the right paw… I mean, foot?

Wandering Bear coffee is a low-calorie beverage that contains only 10 calories per serving. It is also gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan-friendly. The calories come from 2g Carbs and 1g Protein.

Wandering Bear coffee is available for purchase on their website, as well as on Amazon. You can also find it in select grocery stores and cafes.

Wandering Bear coffee has a shelf life of about 30 days when stored in the refrigerator. Once opened, it should be consumed within 30 days for optimal freshness. However unopened containers stay good until the fresh by date on the box

Wandering Bear cold brew contains about 150mg of caffeine per 6oz serving. This is about twice the amount of caffeine found in a regular cup of coffee. They do have a decaf version that doesn’t have caffeine.

Yes, Wandering Bear coffee can be heated. It is recommended to heat it on the stove or in the microwave, but not to boil it.

Are there any promo codes available for Wandering Bear coffee purchases?

Bear sightings aren’t too common on Casper Mountain, and physical encounters between people and bears are even rarer. However, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department said in an interview with Oil City News last year that people visiting the mountain should take precautions and that landowners should make their properties as unattractive to bears as possible.

Ready to hike to one of Minnesota’s most iconic North Shore views? This rugged section of trail boasts steep climbs, expansive views of Lake Superior’s north shore, two hidden lakes, thick forest, roaring waterfalls and plenty of rocks and roots to keep your ankles busy. Whether you are backpacking overnight, or day hiking the loop, the Bean and Bear section is a popular and challenging trail within Tettegouche State Park and the SHT with breathtaking views to be enjoyed year round.

The end of this post will highlight some reflections of my first backpacking trip, 10 years ago (!), on this very same section – Rain, Drainpipes and Bear Spray – oh my! It’s a miracle I ever went backpacking again. I’m so glad I did!

TRIP DETAILS

LENGTH  6.8 mile Bean and Bear loop with options to increase length for and end to end hike.

DIFFICULTY  moderate to difficult

DATE VISITED  several times, most recently June 22-23, 2023. Best time to visit is in the Fall.

MAIN FEATURES    Bean and Bear lakes are located near Silver Bay, Minnesota on the contemporary, traditional, and ancestral homelands of the   OčhĂ©thi Ć akĂłwiƋ   and  Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ  people. Learn more about the rich history of Minnesota’s Native communities here.

This trail winds through Tettegouche State Park, Superior Hiking Trail and North Country Trail. Hikers can choose multiple ways to enjoy the lakes through overnight backcountry camping, State Park camping, day hiking the loop or as part of longer hike.

Tettegouche State Park  is a 9,346 acre park located on Lake Superior’s North Shore, has 4 waterfalls, access to 6 inland lakes, rock climbing and beach access to Lake Superior. The park has 23 miles of hiking/snowshoeing trails, 15.5 miles of groomed classic ski trails and 12 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.

Know Before You Go

Here are a few important tips before you hit the trail

  • Tell someone where you are going, when you’ll be back and bring the 10 essentials-this is a rugged trail and weather conditions can change rapidly near Lake Superior
  • Know your water sources, or bring plenty water, electrolytes and prepare for a hot, exposed section at the top in warmer months.
  • Inland temps are warmer in the warmer months and colder in the cooler months than what the weather apps forecast due to the lake effect. It was 18 degrees warmer than the forecasted high when we were there last week.
  • At the time of writing this, the high bridge crossing the Baptism River is out- and thru hikers or hikers wishing to cross will need to take a detour through the visitor center- approx 3 miles. This does not impact the Bean and Bear Loop trail.
  • Friendly reminder to follow Leave No Trace principles and be a good trail neighbor to preserve its pristine beauty for generations to come.
  • Misc: Cell phone service may be spotty, no bathrooms or water faucets on the trail (backcountry bathrooming tips here)

wandering bear trial

When is the Best Time to Go?

The Bean and Bear Loop is one of the most popular trails in the state to view Fall colors. The cooler temperatures and lack of bugs also make the hiking more enjoyable. Some may dislike the idea of hiking the loop when everyone else is up there, but it’s such a beautiful time of year, it’s always worth the trip! Trails are less busy in the mid week or early morning.

In the Spring, you will find mud and even a little snow in the shaded spots. The lack of bugs, heat and wide open views of the forest and valley before the leaves fill in, is a spectacular view of it’s own!

Summer brings bugs, warm rain, exposed sun and cool dips in the lake! We were backpacking through this section last week and hiked down the spur trail to Bear lake to filter more water and cool off. It is absolutely worth the side trip if you have time. Inland temperatures can vary greatly from the shoreline forecast, our most recent trip was almost 18 degrees warmer inland!

Hiking in this area in the Winter brings a quiet beauty and requires skill. I have not hiked to Bean and Bear in the Winter, but Tettegouche is a great place to snowshoe, ski and hike. Stay on the trail, tell someone where you are going, when you’ll be back and be sure to allow yourself plenty of time.

wandering bear trial

Where to Start

There are a multiple entry points to the Bean and Bear Loop, most common are these two trailheads: Penn Blvd in Silver Bay and Tettegouche State Park. Be sure to keep an eye on the map and signs to make sure you don’t miss the thru to get back to the start if you are planning a loop.

  • From Highway 61, the Penn Blvd trailhead is located 2.2 miles on Outer drive/Penn Blvd- parking lot is on the right
  • From Tettegouche, enter at the visitor center or campground trailhead and follow trail maps.

wandering bear trial

How Much Time Does It Take?

Length of time to hike this trail will vary per person and depend on trail conditions. Some hiking guides list this trail as taking 3 hours to complete – Generally, you can plan for 1.5 – 2 mph, planning time to slow down, take in all of it’s beauty and have a nice long break at the top.

wandering bear trial

Campgrounds

There are two Superior Hiking Trail backcountry campsites along the loop and one or two a little further up trail if you want to make it an overnight adventure.

Nearby Superior Hiking Trail Backpacking sites

note: Superior Hiking Trail Campsites are non-reservable, first come first serve and are meant to be shared with other hikers on the trail. During peak times, you’ll want to get to camp between 3:30-5:00 pm to get a good spot.

Penn Creek campsite is one of the larger and more popular backpacking sites on the Superior Hiking trail and is located about 2 miles from the Penn Blvd trailhead. It is structured like 6 or 7 campsites strung together, with several fire rings, and a small creek running through it.

I’ve stayed at Penn Creek twice and, despite its popularity, it never felt crowded due to its expansive layout. It rained on both trips with the “Blister Sisters” and “Moss Boss”, in the Fall and Spring 🌧😂 On our Fall trip, as we chasing our friends “Soka and Mudflap” on their thru hike, we were glad to have two tents and a tarp along to keep things a little dryer and allow room to spread out our wet gear.

East and West Palisade Creek

This was another large site with at least 5 or 6 good sized pads. We camped there last week with a nice group from a youth camp, and talked with them for a while around the fire ring. There was a fire ban in place at the time of our hike – but I never have a fire anyway, I’m always off to bed before campfire time after a long day of hiking.

Palisade Creek has an East and West Campsite and the Creek is forked and runs along side the camps- just a short walk away. This campsite also has plenty of good trees for hammocking.

Round Mountain

I honestly don’t remember anything remarkable about this site, except that we stayed there 10 years ago and the water source was a beaver pond. This was not very tasty, but WAS extremely helpful to filter and use when one of the adults in our group accidentally sprayed themselves with bear spray. You can read more about my first trip at the end of this post. It’s kind of a amazing that I ever went backpacking again.

State Park Camping

Tettegouche State Park has drive-in, Cart-in, electric, backpacking, and cabin camping options (including showers!)  available year round.  The modern visitor center is accessible 24 hours a day and includes a small interpretive center, gas fireplace, gift shop, heated bathrooms, a vending machine and indoor seating if you want to warm up or dry off in the regions quickly changing weather conditions.

Rain, Drainpipes and Bear Spray – oh my! Reflections on My First Backpacking Trip

Last week marks the 10 year anniversary of my first backpacking trip, and without intentionally planning to do so, my friend “Rice Cake” and I repeated the same route last week! We had planned on hiking ahead one more day, but my ankle had other plans.

That first trip challenged me to step into a whole new skillset as a scout leader, preparing to lead a backcountry trek in Glacier National Park.

I got Wilderness First Aid certified , took outdoor skills classes and read books to learn as much as I could. We were Minnesotans preparing for mountains, so I asked what the toughest stretch of the Superior Hiking Trail was for our shakedown-and this was it: Penn Creek to Tettegouche!

I overcame fears, learned from mistakes and felt a huge sense of growth and empowerment. A few years later I’d return to this challenging trail and hike all 310 miles ! Early on, one of my mentors, Hiking Dude told me that ‘fear is heavy and skills are light’ – I think about that all the time, especially when I’m packing for a trip.

On that 24 hour shakedown, we carried humongous packs, accidentally discharged a canister of bear spray at close range, went down “the drainpipe” in the rain (BEFORE the stairs or safety rails were adeed-IYKYK), lost shoes in the mud, got lost on a snowmobile trail and eventually made it back to Tettegouche to reunite with the rest of our troop with our heads held high.

Despite all of the things that went wrong- I knew that I wanted to do this again, and we’d be ready when we went into the backcountry at Glacier National Park. We survived with some great stories, and it seemed that all of our trials happened on our shakedown allowing the big trip to go on without a hitch.

Have you hiked Bean and Bear or are you preparing for your first backpacking trip? Or maybe you remember a trip that went sideways? It’s always a great time to be on the SHT!

California teacher surprised by bear wandering through her classroom

By Amy Maetzold

Updated on: August 9, 2024 / 10:39 AM PDT / KCAL News

A teacher in Kern County had a surprise visit from a bear and it was all caught on camera.

It happened on Tuesday night as Elaine Salmon was getting ready for the first day of school at Peak to Peak Mountain Charter School in Pine Mountain Club near Frazier Park.

The video shows the curious bear wandering around the classroom, checking out tables and bookshelves.

snapshot-2024-08-09t075008-732.jpg

Salmon said she immediately left the classroom after she spotted the bear and shut the door behind her.

Her husband came to the rescue and was able to safely get the bear back outside to the mountains by holding open the door for the animal.

Salmon said the bear caused no serious damage to the room besides getting into an earthquake preparedness kit.

"We have an earthquake kit with snacks just in case of an emergency and the bear went through it," said Elaine Salmon, teacher.

The first day of school for Peak to Peak Mountain Charter , which is "home of the bears," is set for Wednesday, August 14.

Amy Maetzold is a digital producer at CBS Los Angeles. She started her journalism career in Wisconsin where she was a producer at NBC15 and Spectrum News 1. Before coming to KCAL, Amy covered news in Santa Barbara at KEYT, winning a group Emmy Award for team coverage on the Alisal Fire.

Biologists kill bear wandering around Utah campground, find stomach full of trash

By carter williams, ksl.com | posted - aug. 9, 2024 at 5:03 p.m., a utah division of wildlife resources bear sign placed in the utah wild. wildlife officials said they captured a killed a black bear near kamas on monday after it became "habituated to seeking food in campgrounds." (utah division of wildlife resources).

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

KAMAS — Utah wildlife officials say they have located and killed a bear that kept eating trash from campsites and dumpsters, prompting a closure of a campground in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

State wildlife biologists tracked down the black bear, a 2 1/2-year-old male, on Monday. Since the bear had continued to go after trash at Soapstone Campground and other nearby sites over the past few weeks, they determined that the bear was "habituated to getting food from areas with people," and the decision was made to euthanize the animal to avoid future encounters with humans, according to Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Mark Hadley.

Hadley added that the division conducted a necropsy afterward, where they found that its stomach was "full of trash and food from the campsites."

"Having to euthanize an animal is really hard and is not a decision we make lightly," he told KSL. "As a reminder, it is crucial for campers to keep their campsites clean to avoid attracting a bear, which can create a dangerous situation for both the bear and people who visit the area."

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources first received a report on July 23 that a black bear had gotten into trash at a few campsites and dumpsters in the Soapstone Campground area a few days earlier. Biologists responded to the site — about 15 miles southeast of Kamas — and set up trail cameras and a pair of barrel traps as they tried to locate the bear.

U.S. Forest Service rangers also closed the campground down as a precaution at that time. While the bear wasn't immediately caught, biologists found evidence that the bear continued to visit dumpsters in the days after the equipment was set up.

The bear even picked dumpster trash over the bait in the barrel traps on July 25, leading the Forest Service to empty the trash in hopes that the bear could be caught and relocated. Then, last weekend, a bear found trash campers had left out at another camping area about a mile east of Soapstone Campground.

Biologists determined it was likely the same bear. It was located two days later, and the decision was then made to euthanize it. The Forest Service still listed Soapstone Campground as closed on Friday.

The series of events came after a similar circumstance in American Fork Canyon last month . Biologists killed a 5-year-old black bear that had gotten into food and trash at Granite Flats, Timpooneke, Salamander Flat and Altamount campgrounds in the area, especially after it showed signs it had "become habituated to seeking food in campgrounds."

Biologists also killed a bear in Big Cottonwood Canyon last month, but that was after the animal reportedly attacked a runner on a trail in the canyon . But Hadley says the two trash-related incidents are an important reminder as to why people should take steps to avoid a bear encounter while out in the wild.

  • Bear-proof food and supplies: Store food, snacks and scented items (such as deodorant and toothpaste) in a locked trailer or the trunk of a car, not on tables or in a tent.
  • Keep cooking areas clean: Thoroughly clean utensils and anything else that was used to prepare or eat the food. Store all oil or grease in a container to take home.
  • Keep campsites clean: Don't leave food scraps and other trash scattered around any campsite or cabin area. Put them in trash bags to take home. Wipe down picnic tables and keep the area free of food and other debris.

Bengals fall to Bears in Chicago

CHICAGO (WXIX) - The Cincinnati Bengals lost 27-3 Saturday to the Chicago Bears.

Here is what head coach Zac Taylor had to say about the Bengals’ second preseason game.

4th Quarter

Northern Illinois rookie quarterback Rocky Lombardi opened the fourth quarter at quarterback for the Bengals.

As the rain fell on Soldier Field, Lombardi fumbled the ball and the Bears recovered.

Chicago scored yet again on the ensuing drive. A Bears’ field goal extended their lead over the Bengals to 27-3.

The Bengals never scored in the second half.

Chicago was able to run the clock out to end the game.

3rd Quarter

Logan Woodside and the Bengals offense started the second half trailing the Chicago Bears 10-3.

The Bears defense picked off Logan Woodside for the second time Saturday to end the Bengals’ opening drive of the second half.

Cincinnati’s defense gave up touchdowns on consecutive drives to the Tyson Bagent led Bears offense.

The second Bears touchdown gave them a 24-3 lead.

Rocky Lombardi, a rookie quarterback out of Northern Illinois, took over for Logan Woodside late in the third quarter.

2nd Quarter

Logan Woodside, who started at quarterback Saturday, was leading the Bengals into Bears territory as the second quarter began.

A free-running Bears defender got to Woodside, disrupting his throw as the ball went into the air. Chicago picked the ball off and took over.

Cincinnati’s defense kept Caleb Williams and the Chicago offense out of the end zone once again.

The Bears did manage to get a field goal to take the lead.

Later in the quarter, Cincinnati’s defense gave up a rushing touchdown to Williams.

The Bengals’ defense kept star rookie Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears in check for much of the first half.

A pair of dazzling plays from Williams got the Bears a touchdown inside the final two minutes of the first half. Chicago leads 10-0.

Evan McPherson made a 54-yard field goal as the clock expired in the first half to get Cincinnati on the board.

The Bengals head into halftime down 10-3.

1st Quarter

The Bengals’ defense forced the Bears and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams to go three and out on the game’s opening series.

With Joe Burrow not playing and Jake Browning out with an injury, Logan Woodside got the start at quarterback for the Bengals.

Woodside and the offense did pick up a first down on their opening drive. The drive stalled and the Bengals punted.

Bear Breaks into California Classroom and Eats Students’ Snacks

Last week, California charter school teacher Elaine Salmon left her classroom for a few minutes to make some copies. When she returned, there was a pupil behind one of the desks that she hadn’t counted on: A young black bear. Worse, the bear had located the kids’ earthquake crisis kits, which contained snacks. When Salmon discovered the bear, it was midway through one of the emergency granola bars.

Salmon quickly called her husband, Ian Sawrey, who happens to be a bear removal expert. (The charter school is located in Pine Mountain Club, a rural part of the state north of Los Angeles where bear encounters are common.) Sawrey was able to escort the bear out of the building without issue. No one—including the bear—was harmed in the incident.

Over the last year, Sawrey has responded to hundreds of bear-related incidents and break-ins, he told news outlet KGET . In some cases, the bears have broken into homes in broad daylight while the occupants were home. Some of these nuisance bears are so desensitized that they don’t respond to shouting, loud noises, or any other common bear-deterrent methods. Some bears are even repeat offenders. In Lake Tahoe California, one bear, dubbed Hank the Tank for his rotund figure and 500-pound frame, was linked to nearly two-dozen break-ins. In Lake Tahoe, Pine Mountain Club, and other mountain towns, residents have gone so far as to lock doors and windows, carry airhorns, and place alarms and spiked bear “unwelcome mats” near entryways to help keep bears from breaking in .

“Yes, we do live with nature. Yes, we do live with bears, but the bears have crossed a line,” Sawrey told KGET.

However, it’s likely that the bears aren’t consciously aware of such lines. Instead, they’ve become trained over months or years of experience to associate human hangouts with easy meals (After all, it’s much more energy-efficient to obtain a meal by eating some trash than wandering for miles in search of a berry patch or carcass). Over time, these bears have also been trained to associate human beings with minor nuisance—not real danger—which is why they learn to ignore noises and waving arms.

The result is dangerous for humans. It’s also dangerous for bears. Bears who get into trash sometimes ingest non-food items, which can result in intestinal blockages. In severe cases, such blockages can cause a bear to effectively starve to death . The other issue is that just one good trash meal (or, say, delicious emergency granola bar) is enough for a bear to begin associating human homes with food rewards. If the bear becomes overly habituated, it has to be euthanized.

If you live in bear country, Kara Van Hoose, public information officer for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, recommends doing as the residents of Pine Mountain Club are: Making town as inhospitable for bears as possible.

“Bears are really resourceful and know how to open cars. They can open doors into your home. The best way to keep them out is to keep those doors locked,” she told Backpacker  in a recent interview about bear safety. She also recommends carrying bear spray, even if you’re in your own yard, if you live in the heart of bear country. That sends a strong physical message that bears aren’t welcome.

“We want bears to stay wild,” Van Hoose says. The secret, she emphasizes, is constant vigilance. “When you leave out bird feeders or your trash, you’re contributing to the habituation of that bear, and when bears become comfortable around humans, that leads to conflicts.”

Wildlife officials explain bear euthanasia policy after multiple recent bear encounters

A fter the news that a black bear bit a trail runner just up Big Cottonwood Canyon this week, some questions were raised on social media — many left wondering, how do you handle a situation like this when wildlife is involved?

Hiker Marilin has never run into a bear before.

She knows, “We're in their areas.”

After a bear attack in popular hiking area Big Cottonwood Canyon, people on social media questioned the euthanasia of the bear.

Marilin thinks the decision should be weighed.

“I think people should allow to see if the bear is dangerous,” said Marilin. “If it is, than do what you need to do to sting it. But if it’s not, my opinion is, let it roam. Let it go where it needs to go”

KUTV reached out to the Department of Wildlife Resources to talk with them about their process.

“A bear isn’t going to single a person out as a food source,” said Darren DeBloois, Mammals Coordinator with Utah Wildlife Resources. “Typically, bears don’t want to be anywhere around you.”

When asked why euthanasia decisions are made, DeBloois said it’s out of an abundance of caution.

“We would just hate to see somebody get hurt, especially for a bear that we can get our hands on and we knew could be a problem and someone gets hurt or killed,” he said.

It’s important to know what to do when a wildlife run-in happens.

  • Others recount encounters with bears after man bitten in Big Cottonwood Canyon

“There is no harm in reporting it,” DeBloois said. “If there is a bear hanging around a trail, I think that would be a good thing to report just so we are aware.”

As for Marilin, she agrees that safety is a priority.

“The people should come first,” she said.

Looking through the history of incidents in the last few years, one bear was euthanized in Moab back in 2019. The bear bit a 13-year-old boy who was sleeping in his tent.

At the end of July, a bear was euthanized in American Fork Canyon after charging officers.

Bears' Montez Sweat, Nate Davis take first steps back

Sweat, out since july 31, participated in individual drills tuesday. “i don’t have any concerns as far as his readiness and availability for week 1,” defensive coordinator eric washington said. davis participated in some team drills after missing nine practices..

Pro Bowl defensive end Montez Sweat did not participate in team drills for the seventh consecutive practice — one of four defensive starters who did not participate Tuesday.

But defensive coordinator Eric Washington said “I don’t have any concerns” about Sweat’s readiness or availability for the season opener Sept. 8.

In fact, it was a day of minor progress on the injury front. Sweat and cornerback Kyler Gordon participated in individual drills. Safety Jaquan Brisker (five consecutive practices) and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (six) were non-participants.

Sweat has missed the last seven practices with an undisclosed injury. As the Bears’ top pass rusher and “multiplier,” he’s the biggest concern. But Washington was upbeat about Sweat’s status.

“He’s making progress and trending in the right direction as far as getting 100% healthy,” Washington said.

Gordon, who has been out since July 31 and has missed 14 of 17 practices with a leg strain, also is ramping up toward full participation. But the defense has not been whole at any point since beginning practicing in pads July 26. In fact, four or more starters have been out for the last seven practices, plus the preseason game Saturday against the Bills.

“It’s always better when they’re available to be working,” Washington said. “In an ideal situation, we want that first-line group to be working together. But we also have a next-man-up mentality. So hopefully we start to get guys back — Kyler . . . Montez . . . Tyrique . . . and they can practice for an extended period of time. But we have to be ready if anyone’s not available.”

Davis on the comeback trail

Guard Nate Davis , who had missed the last nine practices with a soft-tissue issue, returned on a limited basis. Davis participated in the first two team drills but missed the last two while doing rehab work on the side.

But Ryan Bates , who had played right guard in Davis’ absence before an injury late last Thursday, did not practice. Long snapper Patrick Scales missed his fifth consecutive practice.

Next man up

The defense has showed off its depth with Brisker, Gordon, Stevenson and backup cornerback Terell Smith out. Safety Elijah Hicks and cornerbacks Jaylon Jones and Josh Blackwell started against the Bills.

“Josh Blackwell has done a really nice job playing the nickel position,” Washington said when asked about reserves who have stood out. “Really like how he’s been working. He’s really stepped up.”

Halftime Observations: Chicago Bears Lead Cincinnati Bengals 10-3

CINCINNATI — The Bengals trail the Bears 10-3 at halftime on Saturday afternoon. Here are our halftime observations:

Defense Thrives

The Bengals didn't play their starters on Saturday, but the Bears did—which meant Cincinnati's backups got plenty of good work.

They forced three-straight three-and-outs to start the game, as top pick Caleb Williams and company struggled. Josh Newton had a nice pass breakup while facing Bears No. 1 wide receiver DJ Moore on a key third down play.

Ultimately, Williams led the Bears downfield for 10 points, but that was against a lot of the Bengals' third-team defense.

The Bengals' offense struggled to generate much. Logan Woodside was solid at quarterback, completing 15-of-20 passes for 119 yards.

Jaxson Kirkland got the start at left tackle Cody Ford started at right tackle. Rookie Matt Lee was at center with Nate Gilliam (LG) and Trey Hill (RG) at guard.

Gilliam was called for a penalty and Hill was called for three penalties. Lee, Kirkland and Ford might've put themselves in position to make the team. Ford is likely a lock. Lee and Kirkland are hoping to show the coaching staff that they're worth of a spot on the 53-man roster.

Rookie Punter

Ryan Rehkow had a solid first half. He put one punt inside the 20 and averaged 44.3 yards on three attempts, including a 56-yarder that was aided by a friendly bounce.

Bengals kicker Evan McPherson made a 54-yard field goal as time expired at the end of the first half to get on the board. It's worth noting that Rehkow was the holder on that attempt with Brad Robbins (hip) out with an injury.

Rookie defensive tackle Kris Jenkins picked up his first career sack. He used a spin move to get to Williams and was able to bring down the Bears quarterback.

Caleb Williams runs for TD, leads 2 scoring drives as Bears beat Bengals 27-3

CHICAGO – Caleb Williams looked downfield and saw nobody open. He spun and hit Rome Odunze deep on the run, one prized rookie connecting with another on a 45-yard pass .

It was just the sort of play Chicago hopes to see on a consistent basis.

Williams made another good impression in his first appearance at Soldier Field since being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick, running for a touchdown and leading two scoring drives, and the Bears beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3 on Saturday.

Williams got off to a slow start coming off an impressive and brief showing last week at Buffalo in his first preseason appearance. Chicago went three-and-out on its first three possessions on a rainy afternoon. The former USC star then showed the arm and elusiveness the Bears are banking on, leading them to a field goal and scrambling for a touchdown.

Williams completed 6 of 13 passes for 75 yards against Cincinnati's backups, including the 45-yarder to Odunze. That set up a 7-yard touchdown scramble late in the second quarter.

“We’re going to be explosive,” Williams said. “We’re two rooks, but we’re trying to catch up to some older guys as fast as we can. We’ve got to make sure we’re right there on par with them, to be able to be efficient, function, got out there and be explosive, be on the same page and win games. Ultimately that’s what we’re here to do. And to have a guy like that who was drafted with me, we’re going to keep growing and keep building this connection.”

Odunze, the No. 9 overall draft pick, also had a 16-yard run on an end-around to help set up a field goal. Khalil Herbert carried five times for 31 yards.

Tyson Bagent started the second half for Chicago and threw two touchdown passes to Dante Pettis. He was 7 of 8 for 87 yards with a 151.6 rating before Brett Rypien took over midway through the fourth.

Simone Biles, fresh off winning three more Olympic gold medals in Paris and wearing a Green Bay Packers jacket, cheered on her husband, safety Jonathan Owens from the Chicago sideline. The jacket had an image of Owens, who signed with Chicago after spending last year with the rival Packers.

“She hasn’t been around much so she doesn’t have a lot of Bears gear and she was just supporting me,” he said. “That was all about her showing her support of her husband. We’re going to have to get her some more Bears gear.”

Logan Woodside started at quarterback for Cincinnati with the Bengals holding out Joe Burrow and backup Jake Browning out with a rib injury. He was 17 of 25 for 132 yards and two interceptions before Rocky Lombardi took over late in the third.

Evan McPherson, armed with a three-year, $16.5 million contract extension , kicked a 54-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

Second-round draft pick Kris Jenkins Jr. sacked Williams. The Bengals committed 11 penalties for 123 yards, and that frustrated coach Zac Taylor even though the starters weren't playing.

“There were just some things that should be avoidable,” he said. “It has nothing to do with talent, it has nothing to do with scheme. We just have to do a better job operationally handling some of those situations.”

Williams and the Bears got going early in the second quarter, after Amen Ogbongbemiga picked off a pass deep in Chicago territory. The Bengals were on the 22 when Josh Blackwell hit Woodside as he threw, and the ball popped up, leading to the interception.

Chicago took over at the 26. A 43-yard pass interference penalty against Josh Newton trying to defend a throw to Tyler Scott put the ball on the 15, leading to a field goal for the Bears.

The Bears added to their lead on their next drive when Williams, throwing on the run, hit Odunze deep along the left sideline. The 45-yard completion was his longest of the preseason.

Williams then spun away from two defenders on third down for a 7-yard touchdown, making it 10-0.

“It’s pretty unreal, honestly,” Odunze said. “I just watched it back. Man he’s throwing off of one leg, putting it on my outside shoulder. It’s like, oooh! It’s magical what he’s doing back there in that backfield. He’s special.”

WHAT IS COLD BREW COFFEE?

Cold brew is a type of iced coffee made by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period of time (between 12-24 hours). Traditional iced coffee is made by brewing hot coffee and then pouring it over ice. The cold brew process eliminates heat and brings out the big, bold flavors of coffee while leaving behind some of the acids and oils that make traditional iced coffee taste so bitter. Our cold brew has everything you love about coffee -- rich chocolate and dark fruit notes, full body, and a surprisingly smooth finish -- without the things you don't, like bitterness or acidity. Cold brew coffee is the best iced coffee.
