2023 Coron Itinerary & Tour Review: 4-day/3-night Family Friendly Guided Tour

During our six-week summer stint in Asia, my family and I joined up with 25 of our extended family members for a jam-packed four-day/three-night tour of Busuanga, Coron, and the islands of the Calamian archipelago in the western Philippines.

Part of Palawan Province, Coron and the Calamianes Islands are about as picturesque as tropical islands go with their translucent blue waters; soft, sandy beaches; colorful sea life; natural hot springs; epic rock formations; and lush greenery.

We spent our days island-hopping, swimming, snorkeling, diving, and, of course, feasting, with guides from Calamian Islands Travel & Tours . Our visit was most definitely a highlight of my six-year-old’s entire trip, and mine, too! Read on about our experience below.

4-day/3-night Family Friendly Coron Itinerary - Summary

  • Day 1: Arrival & town tour
  • Day 2: Lakes, lagoons, & coral gardens
  • Day 3: Beaches & reefs
  • Day 4: Shopping & departure

Ruhe Suites

Included in tour package; otherwise ~$30-$60 USD/night

Calamian Islands Travel & Tours seems to run a few hotels, including Ruhe Suites , where our family stayed during our visit. Ruhe is a Santorini-inspired hotel about a five-minute ride outside of Coron town proper. We loved the open layout, pool, and restaurant that served up huge mango shakes. We noticed that the rooms on the first deck (their Deluxe Rooms ) were slightly roomier per-person than the ones on deck two and three.

Two cons: the rooms are outfitted with queen beds only, so be prepared if you’re bunking with someone else. Secondly, I and a couple other family members came down with a bad case of food poisoning on our last morning in Coron, and unfortunately we suspect the chop suey from the hotel restaurant. Bummer, because it was quite tasty the first night we ordered it.

Would I stay again? Yes, but I’d steer clear of the food.

4-day/3-night Family Friendly Coron Itinerary

wonderful island travel and tours

There are a number of tour companies that use similar itineraries, but we enjoyed booking our multi-day tour package with Calamian Islands Travel and Tour company. The English- and Bisaya-speaking guides were kind, knowledgeable, and amazing swimmers and “human-drones” (more on that later!).

Due to our limited time in the area, we chose the four-day, three-night Escapade Package  in order to maximize our sightseeing with guides. Check out our full itinerary below:

DAY 1: Town Tour

This was a great way to ease into our vacation and get a sense of our surroundings.

On the afternoon of our arrival and after settling in for a few hours at our hotel, Ruhe Suites , we were loaded into two large vans and brought to Coron town to visit a souvenir shop and a cashew shop with delicious samples.

We then made the 700-step climb up Mt. Tapyas for sweeping views of Coron town and the surrounding islands. I was amazed that my six-year-old made it to the top with hardly a complaint. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the descent.

We spent the evening relaxing in the pools of Maquinit Hotspring , a privately owned natural hot spring.

For dinner (not included in the tour price), we ate at Lobster King , where our family enjoyed delicious seafood for about $20 USD per person. Our meal was accompanied by live music, and a few of our family even went up to sing and play along, which, after a day full of travel, was a lovely way to cap our evening.

DAY 2: Super Ultimate Tour

Lakes, lagoons, & coral gardens $30 USD if not purchased with package; ~10 hours

Following the buffet breakfast provided at Ruhe Suites , our guides picked us up around 8 a.m for our Super Ultimate Tour . We made our way to the harbor to await our pump boat that would take us around the Calamian Islands.

Once our group boarded the boat, we were given an orientation by our guides, and were also asked whether we wanted to rent any equipment like snorkeling gear, water shoes, kayaks, and more. Then we sat and wait while the guide stepped off the boat to grab the items for us. This process took longer than expected and I wish we could’ve “ordered” our rentals ahead of time so that they’d be ready for us by the time we boarded our boat.

Finally, once our gear was set, we were off!

wonderful island travel and tours

Our second tour day was an active one with lots of stops:

  • Kayangan Lake, which included a quick and somewhat steep hike and descent before our swim;
  • Baracuda Lake, where my snorkel gear sank to the bottom, thankfully close enough where a guide could get it!;
  • buffet lunch prepared by our crew, and a pool break at Balinsasayaw Resort ;
  • Snorkeling in two coral gardens (Smith and Twin Peaks); and
  • Kayaking and swimming at Twin Lagoons.

This was my six-year-old’s second time snorkeling (the first being just a few days earlier in Moalboal, Cebu), and she was such a trooper! She had a blast looking at all the fish and swimming her heart out.

My favorite memory on this day was of my family in Twin Lagoons forming a human chain where each person wearing a life vest laid back to float in the water, while holding the feet of another person under their arms. It was so silly, yet quite a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery!

wonderful island travel and tours

The waters were especially blue and clear at the start of the day, and I was awestruck by that and the limestone islands that towered above us. By the late afternoon the waves were choppier and the waters felt more muddled.

Our tour didn’t include stops at CYC Beach or Beach 91; the latter was where we were supposed to have lunch but it was apparently too crowded. Even though they look lovely to visit, I don’t feel like we missed out on anything special in these places.

After another day in the books and when we were dropped back off at the hotel, we put in a huge order of McDonald’s for us all to feast on by the pool.

wonderful island travel and tours

DAY 3: Island Escapade Tour

Beaches & reefs $30 USD/person if not purchased with package; ~9 hours

Day 3, the Island Escapade Tour , started off similar to Day 2, but our itinerary was much more aligned with life in a tropical paradise: SLOW. As opposed to the day before, we only made three stops, which made sense as they were significantly further away. But it also meant we were able to savor each destination.

Our first stop was to Malcapuya Island, which was not quite a two-hour boat ride from Coron town. Many of us caught a couple extra zZzs on the ride over.

Malcapuya Island was probably my favorite stop on our entire tour—the bright, sandy beach is expansive, clean, and there are loads of colorful clams and fish not too far from the shore. We had so much fun swimming, snacking, snorkeling, and taking portraits 😛

wonderful island travel and tours

Our guides were very skilled in the art of the “human drone,” where they take your camera and swish it around, resulting in videos that mimic drone footage. It’s like they’re practicing dance choreography and you get amazing videos as a result!

Before we could leave for our next stop, the tide had gone out so our family had to help the boat crew maneuver our vessel off of Malcapuya. This took the form of folks (mostly the men) getting off the boat, helping push it out of the sand, and moving from one side of the boat to the other to redistribute the weight. We got some cool band photos as a result.

wonderful island travel and tours

Our next stop was Banana Island for lunch and more snorkeling and swimming. The crew cooked up another excellent meal of seafood and veggies, and prepared this sweet fruit plate for the newlyweds! After lunch we had almost two hours to relax, drink a coconut, and explore the reef.

The tide was quite low at that point, so while the reef was really close to the shore, we had to be very careful in our maneuverings and make sure our life vests and feet weren’t hitting the coral. We saw more clown fish, coral, and even a tiger shark! Plus there was a fish that kept giving me the stare-down.

wonderful island travel and tours

Our final stop of the day was the Bulog Dos sand bar, which is adjacent to the fancy Two Seasons private island resort. The water was murkier and more choppy at this point of the day, so it was difficult to see. The coolest thing we saw here was a starfish fossil that one of the guides pointed out!

After a short stint at Bulog Dos, we loaded back into the boat to make the long ride back to the harbor, and arrived back at the hotel by 6 p.m., which for my kid meant another couple hours at the pool before bedtime!

wonderful island travel and tours

DAY 4: Shopping & departure

After two full days of adventuring through the area, I was excited to sleep in and rest before our flight back to Cebu. I’m extra glad I did because I ended up with full-blown (no pun intended) food poisoning immediately before we left for the airport. UGH. Some of my family members, on the other hand, went back into town for one last bit of shopping, specifically for cashews and treats from Melb’s Cashew Factory , as well as souvenirs like t-shirts and coin purses. We got picked up by Calamian Islands Travel & Tours one last time and made our way back to tiny Busuanga Airport for our departure.

wonderful island travel and tours

Wishlist for Our Next Visit

Perhaps when my kid is older we can learn how to scuba dive and check out some of the famous shipwrecks in Coron.

And I’d love the chance to stay on a private island resort 😎

What an adventure!

I would highly recommend making the trek to Coron and Palawan with your family if you’re looking for a beach vacation with tons of swimming and sea life. I haven’t visited El Nido or Puerto Princesa, but my family members who have said they preferred Coron for its accessibility (you don’t need to drive 5 hours from the airport to get there!) and its natural beauty. We saw a lot of Pilipino families and groups on our travels, as well as a smattering of tourists from different places.

wonderful island travel and tours

Looking back at our experiences and photos, I feel so privileged that we had the chance to visit this beautiful slice of nature, and with so much of my family in tow. For me, the can’t-miss highlights on our tour were definitely Malcapuya and Banana Islands, and the Twin Lagoons. I would certainly be excited for our next visit!

Ultimate Coron Island Hopping Tours Guide

Wondering which are the best Coron Island Hopping Tours to spend your money on? We know the feeling!

Having tried and tested the tours we can help you pick the right tour for you.

After experiencing all there was to offer in  El Nido , we moved on to Coron (only a short boat ride away).

Like El Nido, Coron is an area where boat tours whisk you to jaw-dropping lagoons, reefs and white sand beaches.

Which Coron Tour should I take? 4 Coron Tours which Rocked!

We did the 4 main tours in Coron with JY Travel & Tours . They were all absolutely amazing!

The Ultimate Tour – For those who only want 1 Tour

The Ultimate Tour is exactly as the name suggests – it showcases the best & most iconic areas Coron has to offer.

If we had time for only one tour in Coron, this would be it. The stunning lagoons and amazing landscapes are unique to Coron and something you do not see everyday.

The Ultimate Tour costs 1200 PHP per person ($22 USD).

The tour includes: hotel transfers, an experienced guide & lunch. It does not include the use of kayaks (1000 PHP per kayak).

Tips for the Ultimate Tour:

  • Unlike the El Nido tours, hiring/buying reef shoes is not really a necessity. We did not hire the reef shoes and were perfectly fine;
  • Bringing or hiring a snorkel is worthwhile as part of the tour involves viewing of an underwater ship wreck;
  • Hiring a kayak is advantageous but not essential. You can also enjoy the Twin Lakes by swimming.

Kayangan Lake

The first destination of the day is Kayangan Lake. This is perhaps the attraction we were most excited to see in Coron due to the perfect turquoise water.

To reach this attraction, it involves a 367 step climb.

Luckily half way up, you will find an absolutely stunning view of Coron.

As this is one of the most iconic views of Coron, there was quite a line up to get this shot. Well worthwhile for a beautiful memory though!

And yes, the hike is completely worth every agonising step up as at the bottom you are rewarded with some of the clearest water in Asia with absolutely stunning natural rock formations.

The water is in fact so clear that you can see garfish swimming around you in the lake.

You are not allowed to swim in Kayangan Lake without a life jacket so make sure you bring one with you from the boat!

Barracuda Lake

Our next stop was Barracuda Lake. This was an unexpected stop and a “bonus stop” of our tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed Barracuda Lake and would recommend trying to book a tour which includes it.

If anyone is also interested in the best place to free dive in Coron – this is the place to do it! The underwater rock formations at Barracuda Lake are absolutely unreal.

We did not free dive but we had an opportunity to snorkel at Barracuda Lake and were very happy with the opportunity to be able to swim & snorkel in one of Coron’s most iconic locations.

We could also see the beautiful underwater rock formations just by snorkeling as the water is SO clear in Barracuda Lake. The visibility is unparalleled anywhere else we visited in Palawan.

Following Barracuda Lake is one spot we were eagerly awaiting. It’s one of the most iconic spots of Coron – the Twin Lake.

Twin Lake is known for the beautiful colour of water & stunning rock formations.

Here you have the opportunity to use rented kayaks. It is advisable but not absolutely necessary to kayak at Twin Lake.

After a fun time swimming & kayaking in the lake, we enjoyed a delicious lunch aboard the boat. This consisted of grilled fish, rice, vegetables, chicken & fruit.

Japanese Ship Wreck

The next stop is a Japanese ship wreck. It was very cool seeing a Japanese ship wreck from WW2 submerged underwater.

As stated above, it is advisable to hire or buy snorkel gear for this tour as it is fascinating to see the ship wreck.

The final stop of the day was CYC beach.

You can swim or use your kayak to access the beach.

Interestingly, we met a French tourist camping overnight on CYC beach. He had actually come on a day trip and asked if he could be collected the next day.

An option for anyone who wants to get back to nature for a night. Ask your tour if this is possible in advance. The tourist brought all his own supplies.

As we got back on the boat, we were treated to “Turon” a Filipino specialty which is banana wrapped in spring roll paper and fried.

Turon was one of the extra perks on our tour with JY Travel and Tours and one of the many reasons why we love them!

Coron Escapade Tour

The next tour we took of Coron was the Escapade Tour . We choose this tour as we wanted to see some spots further away from Coron where fewer tours (and tourists) go.

We recommend this tour for those looking for beautiful beaches further away from Coron.

There are less stops included in this tour as the first stop is 1.5 hours boat ride from Coron.

Tips for the Escapade Tour:

  • Hiring/buying reef shoes is not really a necessity. We did not hire the reef shoes and were perfectly fine;
  • Bringing or hiring a snorkel is worthwhile as the snorkeling on this tour is amazing;
  • Hiring a kayak on this tour is not necessary.

Malcapuya Island

The first stop was Malcapuya Island. This Island is absolutely beautiful – white sand beaches & crystal clear water.

Malcapuya Island Coron

What we also loved about this beach was that there are plenty of tables & chairs to sit on at the beach to keep shaded in the hot weather in the Philippines.

This island is also great for off shore snorkeling so if you have brought or hired a snorkel, this is a great opportunity to see some beautiful reef life.

Banana Island

After enjoying snorkeling and swimming at Malcapuya Island, it was time to stop for lunch at Banana Island.

The JY crew prepared the most delicious lunch at Banana Island consisting of grilled fish, chicken, rice & fresh fruit.

Banana Island is also a great place to snorkel. If you feel energised after lunch we highly recommend snorkeling at Banana Island as it was one of the best snorkeling spots we experienced in the Philippines.

Metres from shore Mike found a huge school of fish on a feeding frenzy – check out our Instagram story highlights for more about this!

Bulog Dos Island

The island we were most excited about visiting for the day was Bulog Dos Island , which features a stunning white sandbar which protrudes from the beach.

Alas, we are not very lucky with sandbars. Just like our visit to Snake Island, El Nido – we visited at high tide so the ocean covered most of the sandbar.

Even though the full sandbar was not visible Bulog Dos was still an absolutely beautiful island. The snorkeling on this island is also fabulous.

There is also a viewpoint on this Island where you can get some pretty cool Instagram shots.

Calauit Safari Tour

One of the reasons we were excited to visit Coron was to see African animals at the Calauit Safari.

We had seen this safari park on Instagram and were amazed that there was really African animals living in the Philippines. I mean, how cool is that?

Coron Safari

This tour starts even earlier than regular El Nido and Coron tours. The pickup time for the Coron Safari tour is 5am.

We actually didn’t realise this and managed to miss our tour one morning. Not recommended. All of the island tours in Coron start at around 8am. This is different – be prepared.

The first stop is for a local breakfast for those who want it. Breakfast is 100 pesos per person and includes 2 eggs, Filipino sausages & rice.

From here, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the entry to the safari park.

The safari park is a very interesting experience and definitely not be missed if you are in Coron.

A cool quirk of the park is that it’s located on an island reachable only by boat. It really felt like we were visiting Jurassic Park as our boat trundled up to this densely green island where rare animals awaited.

We found the boat ride over to the island to be pretty fun in itself.

When you first arrive, you get to feed the giraffes. It was so fun to be able to feed these animals. They were quite cheeky too so hold on to your branch or they will take it in one bite!

From there the rangers take you around the park to have a longer look at the animals and take photographs.

You can get fairly close to the giraffes and zebras in order to take a beautiful photo. The rangers don’t like you getting closer than 3-4 metres.

On the safari, the ranger also took us to see turtles, monkeys & a large snake.

It was a great experience and we would highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals.

After the safari, we had a quick pitstop at a local beach before heading back to the same restaurant as breakfast for lunch.

Black Island

After lunch the group split into two: those who wanted to see a waterfall & those who wanted to see Black Island.

We choose to skip the waterfall in favour of Black Island, an absolutely beautiful island off the north coast of Coron.

There is also an amazing cave on the island with a natural swimming hole. If you feel like an icey cold dip, you can even take a swim in the cave.

We arrived in Coron after a ferry ride from El Nido. The boat from El Nido arrrives at around 10am in the morning. This means it is too late to do a boat tour.

However, we didn’t need to waste any time as we were able to join the Coron Town Tour! This tour starts at 4pm in the afternoon.

Admittedly, we are not usually fans of town tours. We would rather DIY. However, as this tour requires an after dark transfer to the hot springs 30 minutes from town, we think it’s good value and more convenient than taking a tuk tuk.

We would highly recommend it if you have an extra afternoon spare while you are in Coron.

Lualhati Park

The first stop on the Coron Town Tour is Lualhati Park.

This was our least favourite spot of the tour but it was only a short stop for 10 minutes.

Basically, it is a nice river view walk/dock boat. Locals sell various souvenirs here and if you haggle, you can get a great price!

Mt Tapyas View Deck

The highlight of the Tour in our opinion was what came next – Tapyas View Deck.

The view and scenery at the View Deck is sublime.

We were not expecting this kind of countryside in the fisherman village of Coron and we were totally blown away.

In order to access the view deck, it is around a 20 minute stair climb to the top. We found it reasonably tiring (we were quite exhausted at the top).

Our guide told us that older people still manage to make it so it is definitely a doable hike!

From on side of the mountain a view deck with a beautiful vista of Coron town. On the other side is beautiful yellow rolling countryside like the one pictured below.

Mt Tapyas View Deck is the perfect place to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

One of the reasons for the late start of this tour is so you can sit down and enjoy the sun set over Coron.

Maquinit Hot spring

After a steep climb uphill, what is better than relaxing tired muscles under the stars?

We weren’t sure what to expect of Maquinit Hot Spring but we were pleasantly surprised.

The hot spring was so relaxing. It is extremely hot though and hard to stay in longer than 20-30 minutes at a time.

Luckily, there is a little cafe where you can buy cheap drinks and relax around the hot springs while you steam off.

Our group preferred to stay longer at the bigger attractions. There were a few attractions we missed in this tour: Town Plaza, Souvenir Shops, St Augustine Church & the cashew harvest.

What is great about JY Travel & Tours – they listen to the needs of the group and their preferences.

We loved that the tour is adaptable to individuals interests.

Which Tour Company? JY Travel & Tour

All Tours of Coron we did with JY Travel & Tours. We couldn’t recommend this company highly enough.

The staff were fun, professional and looked after our safety the entire time. They were also very helpful with information about the surrounds.

Not only are the staff fabulous but they serve a fabulous lunch consisting of grilled fish, chicken, pork, prawns, grilled vegetables, rich & fruit.

If you are looking for a tour in Coron, we would highly recommend this company.

You can find more information on  JY Travel & Tour   website . You can also them on Facebook &  Instagram .

While some island hotels welcome day trippers from Cartagena and have bustling beach clubs, most are pretty laidback. Picture kayaking through the mangrove forests, excellent snorkeling and diving excursions, and even affordable speedboat excursions around the islands.

If you’re looking for a little more hustle and bustle in your island vacation rather than the relaxed Rosario Islands, consider choosing nearby Isla Barú . This island’s premier Playa Blanca is considered Cartagena’s best beach, and just 45 minutes by shuttle or even less by taxi from Cartagena, this destination has much more to offer in the way of restaurants, beach bars, and even party spots.

Cartagena receives frequent direct flights across the Americas at its bustling international airport. In addition to affordable accommodations, you can expect affordable and easy travel to your next island vacation in paradise.

2. Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Vietnam’s largest island, Phu Quoc, is the perfect place in Southeast Asia for island life on a budget. Located in the Gulf of Thailand just off the coast of Cambodia, it is easy to reach by ferry from mainland Southern Vietnam or – thanks to the addition of an international airport – by flight.

Visa-free travel is available for all nationalities, meaning you can skip the usual burden (and up-front costs) associated with a Vietnam tourist visa.

Phu Quoc has a huge range of accommodation options, from flashy five-star resorts right through to humble family guesthouses and secluded beachside bungalows, making it a breeze to find budget digs. An abundance of local restaurants, night street food markets and cheap transportation makes Phu Quoc perfect for anyone traveling on a shoestring.

Hire a motorbike or scooter (prices start from 5 USD per day) and guide yourself around the ‘paradise pearl’. Phu Quoc’s lush jungle interior holds many treasures, including quaint fishing villages, hiking trails in the Ham Ninh Mountains, and the stunning Suoi Tranh Waterfall.

The northern and southern ends of the island are fringed with sheltered white-sand beaches, including the popular Sao Beach.

3. Bali, Indonesia

The beautiful Indonesian island of Bali is one of the most affordable places to visit, especially for a luxury experience.  The prices for food, transport and accommodation are all very reasonable, especially if you explore more of the island beyond tourist hubs in Ubud and Canggu.

Bali has plenty to do whether you’re looking for adventure travel, rest and relaxation, or anything in between. If beaches are your thing, make sure you do day trips to the surrounding islands such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili islands.

If the outdoors is for you, you should explore the famous Tegallalang rice terrace, visit the Sacred Monkey Forest, and climb Mount Batur at sunrise . You can also choose to  stay in one of the unique treehouses in Bali , to really immerse yourself in nature!

If wellness is on your agenda, there are countless yoga studios, spas, meditation retreats and restaurants serving delicious healthy meals at great prices. If you love culture, experience the shadow play theatre that is popular in Bali, or visit one of the many temples such as Lempuyang Temple, or Pura Besakih (the oldest temple on the island).

ischia italy

4. Ischia, Italy

Ischia is a hidden gem in Italy perfect for an affordable island vacation in what can be an expensive country to visit. Located off the gulf of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Ischia is part of the Phlegraean Islands in the Campania region of southern Italy, near the better-known island of Capri.

Ischia Island is the perfect destination for a Mediterranean vacation thanks to its beautiful coastline, idyllic harbors, and unapologetically local feel. You’ll see clothing drying in the warm Italian sun, charming old cars in bright colors parked against stone walls, and grape vines draped over growing lines in small backyard vineyards.

Ischia is a favorite vacation spot for Italians, and you’ll find lower prices and more local fare than in the more internationally popular cities of Rome , Florence , or Venice . There are a number of wonderful things to do in Ischia , but the main attraction is definitely visiting the Aragonese Castle, a castle fortress that has been in use since 471 B.C.

Additionally, you can visit one of Ischia’s sandy beaches, where you can eat bruschetta and sip an Aperol spritz under a reasonably priced cabana. Be sure to rent a car or scooter in order to drive around the ring road and see as much of the island as possible.

5. Sri Lanka

One of the most affordable islands for an unforgettable island vacation has to be Sri Lanka.  This year-round destination has everything from vibrant cities and mountain ranges to tropical jungles and epic beaches.

There are plenty of wildlife-related things to do, from elephant safaris to whale and dolphin watching in Mirissa, and leopard spotting in Yala National Park. For a bit of history and culture, you can visit the tea plantations or explore Sigiriya rock via a hike to the top or on a hot air balloon ride.

Plus if you want to get off the beaten track, there are plenty of choices including the Knuckles Mountains, a great destination for hiking and glamping.

Hotels, food, and activities in Sri Lanka are all very affordable, and you won’t feel like you’re depriving yourself if you’re traveling on a budget. This makes Sri Lanka a great destination for long-term travelers and digital nomads; even those with kids will find that family travel in Sri Lanka is an affordable reality.

The longer than better in this island vacation paradise, though visiting Sri Lanka for 10 days  is a great length of time for the average traveler.

6. São Miguel, Portugal

São Miguel, the largest of the islands that makes up the Azores, is a stunning, affordable island vacation destination off the coast of Portugal.

Spend your time soaking in hot springs like at Parque Terra Nostra, the Termas da Caldeiras, or the Termas da Ferraria. Hike to the many colorful volcanic lakes, with waters ranging from deep blues to greens.

São Miguel and the other islands in the Azores have become much more accessible in recent years with more flight options from Europe, New York City, and Boston.

Navigating the island can be easily done in your own car, so you won’t need to hire a tour guide or taxi. Many of the hikes, hot springs, and attractions have free entry. Others charge a minimal fee, but this makes São Miguel a very affordable island destination.

Food on the island comes straight from the source. Be sure to enjoy the mouth-watering local cheeses and Azorean pineapples. You can take a tour to see how they are grown, and sample the sweet fruit. They’re a pleasant surprise, much different than their tropical counterparts.

maldives

7. Maafushi, Maldives

Don’t be fooled: Maldives isn’t just a destination for travelers on an unlimited budget. There are plenty of easy ways to visit the Maldives on a budget , and with just a few easy Maldives travel tips, it’s actually pretty easy to book a trip to these paradise islands for an affordable island vacation.

One of the most important tips for cheap island vacations to the Maldives is to choose to stay on a populated island like Maafushi, one of the best options for an affordable trip to the Maldives, whether it be popular Maafushi or less-visited Dhangethi .

While Maafushi is home to just over 3,000 people, travelers will find cheap guesthouses , local restaurants, and affordable transportation from the Maldives’ capital and main international airport in Malé.

All this without sacrificing the white sand beaches and clear water you’re looking for in a Maldives vacation. Maafushi has several beautiful white sand beaches to choose from, as well as affordable excursion opportunities to other nearby islands and desolated sand spits in the ocean for that private island experience on a budget.

For affordable island vacations in the Maldives you might have to skip some of the more luxurious Maldives resorts that have made this island nation famous ( unless you travel on the off-season , when resorts cut their prices by up to 50% or more! ). However, don’t rule the Maldives out entirely – there are travel deals to be had in this bucket list destination, too!

8. Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is one of the best budget island vacations in Europe and is a place that is ideal even for a slow-travel trip! The island is part of Portugal and getting there is fairly easy (and cheap!) from Lisbon.

Once in Madeira, you can opt to stay in the capital city of Funchal or head elsewhere, finding budget accommodation options all throughout the island.

One of the  best things to do in Madeira  for active travelers is to go hiking! There are many hiking trails and walks throughout the island that are free and can be reached with public transportation. Two of the most famous Madeira Levada walks are the Rabaçal 25 Fountains Levada Walk and the Caldeirão Verde Levada Walk.

Aside from hiking, other wonderful (and affordable) things to do on the island include visiting Nun’s Valley, relaxing on the beaches of Seixal and Sao Vicente, and checking out the Monte Palace. If you’re looking for an excursion, the ones on Madeira are pretty affordable, and whale watching is a great choice.

Alternatively, you can head to Porto Santo to see the golden, sandy beaches, or visit the Madeira Botanical Gardens, among the most impressive botanical gardens in Portugal .

Like many destinations, the best way to save some money on Madeira is to visit outside of the high season (summer). Visiting in spring or autumn will allow an enjoyable, cheaper trip with far lower accommodation prices!

9. Korcula, Croatia

Located along the Dalmatian Coast, Korcula is one of Croatia’s most beautiful islands – and one of the most affordable! Unlike its pricier neighboring party island of Hvar, Korcula offers a more laidback vibe with reasonable prices to match.

However, don’t be fooled by the island’s tranquil atmosphere – there are still many wonderful  things to do on Korcula  that won’t break the bank.

One of the best things to do in Korcula is enjoy its strong wine culture, as it’s the only place to produce Grk. This dry white is native to the island and cultivated in Korcula’s unique, sand-like soil. Fortunately, wine tastings tend to be budget-friendly, such as the ones offered at Vitis Winery in Lumbarda.

For budget travelers, there are also plenty of cost-effective food options to be found along the outskirts of the town center and along the bay. In addition, getting around the island is also quite affordable with public transportation, only costing several dollars (or around 40HRK) per journey.

Beyond wine tasting, Korcula offers many free public beaches as well as some wonderful hiking opportunities. Head up Novi Put Road off of Sveti Nikola for the best panoramic view over the island, a great way to finish your perfect island vacations in Croatia.

Choose to stay in “casas particulares” – private apartments and homes rented by average Cubans long before Airbnb popularized the idea – for affordable travel , and take shared taxis to move around cities like Havana , and even between cities in Cuba.

There are plenty of excellent places to visit in Cuba , from cities to beaches and national parks. Favorites include Viñales Valley with its stunning “mountain” landscape, the colonial gem of Trinidad , Cuba’s best beaches along the island’s northern coast in Holguin , and the world’s best snorkeling and diving in Jardines de la Reina .

The Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

British Virgin Islands

I’ve been fortunate to travel widely across the Caribbean over the last 30 years. I’m also a descendant of Caribbean people, so many folks assume I’ve visited every island. Not likely—the Caribbean consists of 28 islands encompassing just over one million square miles. So while I’ve visited most, there are still a handful I’ve yet to encounter. But that’s a good thing. Many know the Caribbean of picture-perfect views —all lush green hillsides, soft beaches, sunny skies, sun loungers, and poolside cocktails. But that’s really just the white-sandy surface of this region, where each island has something distinct to offer. On Dominica , hiking is unmatched, notably its Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, where you can traverse across the rim of an active volcano. The best island hopping is in the British Virgin Islands , while Barbados is the action island, where the historic Garrison horse racing takes place year-round.

If you’re looking to soak up some winter sun by a pool lounger and nothing more, then any island in the Caribbean will do—the hotels in St Barth's are amongst some of the best in the world. But if you’re willing to dig a little deeper and venture beyond the resort gates, these are the best islands in the Caribbean.

Which is the best Caribbean island for families?

When little travelers are involved, the ease of a resort jam-packed with activities can take the strain off parents and let everyone enjoy the trip. For this reason, Barbados is the ideal Caribbean island for families, and there’s everything from larger, more affordable resorts to smaller boutique offerings. For intergenerational holidays and trips with slightly older children, consider hiring out a villa— Oliver’s Travels allows customers to filter results by ‘great for kids.’

Barbados

Best island for: action

Barbados might just be one of the best all-rounder islands in the Caribbean. Some of the top hotels in the region are found here, as are some of the best beaches, all accessible to the public—there are no private beaches in Barbados. Poolside beverages are spiked with rum, distilled on the island and best learnt about at St. Nicholas Abbey, a plantation house, museum, and rum distillery. Those looking for more diverse action can find it at the heritage railway, the racing car circuit, and the Garrison Savannah, a popular horse race that takes place throughout the year. And then there are the surrounding reefs, where you can swim with turtles, snorkel with seahorses, and spy whales in winter months.

Where to stay: Sandy Lane Hotel is one of the most glamorous hotels on the island complete with a British or American country club vibe—there are three golf courses on the hotel grounds. For something more low-key, Little Good Harbour ’s rooms feel more like private cottages and its fuss-free restaurant, The Fish Post, is beloved as one of the best in Barbados. For more ideas, consult our list of the best all-inclusive resorts on the island .

Saint Lucia

Best island for: romance

The Caribbean is synonymous with honeymoons but it's St Lucia that tops them all when it comes to serving up romance. You can thank the island’s mountainous landscape for that—it’s all about a room with a view of the 2,000-foot high Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s calling card.

There’s adventure to be found too, like exhilarating zip lines high above the island’s rainforest canopy or mud baths in Sulphur Springs, a geothermically active basin of hot springs and fumaroles within the the dormant Qualibou volcano in Soufrière.

Where to stay: Coconut Bay is the biggest crowd pleaser on the island—all inclusive and catering to couples, families, and even wedding parties. For something more private, Ladera is an eco-lodge where rustic suites have private plunge pools. See our edit of the best resorts in St Lucia for more.

Anguilla

Best island for: beaches

In a region characterized by beautiful beaches , Anguilla has the best in the region. Partly for their mesmerizing ribbon of blue water but also because their powdery white sands invariably host only a handful of other beach-goers. There are 33 beaches in total, and while each one I’ve encountered has been memorable, the standouts to see include Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay.

Anguilla is also a worthy choice for its culinary scene. Refreshingly there are no chain restaurants on the island. Instead, restaurants and eateries tend to be small family-run businesses. If you visit just one, make it Tasty’s, which serves up a stellar coconut-crusted fish and marinated conch salad by Anguillan chef Dale Carty.

Where to stay: The Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club is the newest shiny address on the island, with seven restaurants and bars and a fleet of private jets transporting guests to and from the property. Find more editor-vetted Anguilla hotels here .

British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Best island for: island hopping

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) territory has few chain restaurants and no large hotels or mass tourism attractions. Instead, you’ll encounter turquoise waters, lush green hillsides, and distinctive cuisine and culture across the four main islands: Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Hopping from island to island—whether via public ferry or private catamaran—is the characteristic way to explore the BVI. On my last visit I sailed to Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, home to casual beachfront eateries serving dangerously delicious rum cocktails and locally caught fish. Another fantastic spot is Willy T’s Floating Bar and Restaurant near Norman Island. Moored offshore, the cargo ship has been converted into an ultra-relaxed eatery.

Where to stay: Located on a broad, secluded calm-water bay on Virgin Gorda, Rosewood Little Dix Bay has 80 villas and suites each staffed with a personal butler. The Reef House is one of three restaurants and features farm-to-fork dining with fresh provisions sourced locally.

Dominica

Best island for: diving

The calm waters surrounding Dominica make it one of the best diving spots in the world. The rainbow-colored seascape is best viewed at Champagne Reef, named for its bubbling waters generated by volcanic thermal springs rising from on the ocean floor. The reef also comprises plummeting cliffs, towering volcanic formations and the remains of a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck.

Another highlight is L'Abym, a dive site located on the island’s southern tip and suited to all skill levels due to Soufriere Bay’s gentle current. Underwater wonders are visible from 20 feet below the surface right down to a 1,500-foot maximum depth. An underwater wall extending its entire length gives the site its name.

Where to stay: Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski is the smartest place to stay on the island. All of the classic hallmarks are here—a full service spa, four swimming pools—but it’s the lush grounds, which incorporate Cabrits National Park, that make this spot memorable.

Grenada

Best island for: natural beauty

Grenada’s 133 archipelagic square miles are laced with waterfalls, hot springs and tropical rainforests across three main islands: Grenada, Petit Martinique, and Carriacou. Ringed by 45 white- and nine black-sand beaches, the hilly isles are dotted with acres of fruit and spice trees.

One-ninth of Grenada’s land mass is dedicated to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, best seen on a guided hike of Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Sister Island Carriacou is a worthy day trip too, especially for the top-shelf diving and snorkeling.

Where to stay: Few places capture Grenada's understated magic like the Silversands Grenada resort , found at the sleepy end of the two-mile Grand Anse Beach. The biggest draw here is the 330-foot infinity pool, said to be the longest in the Caribbean, which stretches from the hotel’s entrance all the way to the sea.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

Best island for: history and culture

There’s a distinct energy to Puerto Rico , one that draws upon a fascinating blend of Hispanic, African, American, and Caribbean culture and history. To see it start in colonial San Juan , the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. Head to the old town where cobblestone streets are lined with colorful Spanish buildings housing trendy bars, boutique shopping and all-night entertainment.

Hundreds of thousands of Africans arrived in Puerto Rico via forced migration in the colonial era. Their contributions to the island’s culture, art, music and cuisine live on today in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population. You can witness it via the artwork on display at Samuel Lind Studio, or at the Don Rafael Cepeda School of Bomba and Plena which puts on traditional music and dance workshops.

Where to stay: Caribe Hilton is within walking distance of historic Old San Juan and the Condado entertainment district. Designed in tropical modernist style by legendary Puerto Rican firm Toro Ferrer, the grounds incorporate 17 acres of tropical landscaping as well as nine restaurants and an oceanfront pool complex. See our edit of the best hotels in Puerto Rico for more.

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis

Best island for: visiting two islands in one trip

Lush natural beauty and historic attractions are the hallmarks of this twin-island nation. Most travelers visit both islands, as smaller Nevis is a breezy 20-minute ferry ride from larger St. Kitts. Sightseeing on St. Kitts is best done via the scenic train—the only working railway in the Caribbean—which circumnavigates the island on routes that once transported plantation sugar cane. Another highlight is the Brimstone Hill fortress, built of hand-chiseled stones by enslaved Kittitians and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand among the fort’s ramparts and cannon while taking in panoramic views of neighboring Saba, Statia, St. Maarten, and St. Barths .

Tiny Nevis’ resplendent landscape is overlooked by 3,232-foot high Nevis Peak, located at its center and visible from virtually every point on the island. Mountainside hiking and ATV tours uncover haunting ruins of colonial-era plantations and sugar mills.

Where to stay: Hide away in one of the traditional West Indian–inspired cottages at Belle Mont Farm . As the name suggests, dining here is farm-to-table, serving up freshly foraged organic fruit and vegetables plus seafood plucked straight out of the ocean.

Maui To Mallorca, Santorini To St Lucia: The Best Islands In The World

— Pack your bags for the ultimate island-hop.

by Molly Wolfe

There’s something about islands that enchant us. Perhaps it’s their inherent remoteness —a pocket of land surrounded by vast ocean. Or perhaps it’s their unique cultures, made flavourful by centuries of near-isolation (depending on where you go, of course).

Either way, tropical islands have drawn intrepid travellers since time immemorial and continue to do so to this day. Thankfully, eco-conscious tourism has reared its head just in time to avoid the point of no return for these often over-visited islands.

In our humble opinion, the best islands to visit are those that put sustainability first . These jewels dotted around our planet are beautiful and worth saving.

From the Republic of Palau’s mandatory eco-friendly pledge to Mallorca’s move in the direction of sustainability, there are plenty of island paradises worth a visit, where your dollar will do more good than harm.

On that note, we’ve created the ultimate guide to the best islands in the world, from far-flung Pacific oases to eco-chic resort islands.

21 best islands in the world

Isla holbox, mexico, tuvalu, oceania, lombok, indonesia, andaman islands, santorini, greece, palawan, philippines, the cook islands, st lucia, caribbean, dalmatian islands, croatia, republic of palau, micronesia.

  • Chumbe Island, Zanzibar

Madeira, Portugal

Koh lanta, thailand, pumpkin island, australia, viti levu, fiji, heron island, australia.

  • Maui, Hawaii

Bora-Bora, French Polynesia

Mallorca, spain.

most beautiful islands in the world Isla Holbox Luxa Terra

Take a sandy footstep back in time on Isla Holbox, just north of the Yucatán Peninsula. This island paradise says a firm ‘no’ to a fast pace of living; the people here enjoy a slow, easy way of life. In fact, Isla Holbox has gone out of its way to stay the region’s best-kept secret.

Since being discovered by tourists in the early 2000s, the island’s community has made a conscious effort to prevent super-resorts from being built. So, you’re far more likely to find cosy, family-run casas than sky-high hotels.

Keen bird-watcher? this is the island for you. You’ll find pelicans, flamingos, boat-billed herons, and plenty more winged creatures calling Isla Holbox their home.

But there’s something more: from May to September, this tropical paradise teems with the largest aggregation of whale sharks in the world . So get close (but not too close) and personal with these placid seafarers on one of the island’s whale shark tours, and support the local economy in the same breath.

most beautiful islands in the world Tuvalu, Oceania Luxa Terra

Just missing the award for the smallest island in the world, Tuvalu is no more than a dot among vast swathes of ocean. In fact, this island is so tiny, that the airstrip transforms into a football pitch and village meeting place when not in use! However, good things come in small packages, right? Sitting between Hawaii and Australia, you’re as far from the rat race as you can be.

Fewer than 100 visitors per year make the voyage to Tuvalu, making this remote island a true (almost) untouched paradise . Thought you’d be short of entertainment? Au contraire : Tuvalu offers an abundance of pursuits, from caving to snorkelling to watching local dance contests (trust us, that’s something you won’t want to miss).

If experiencing new cultures is your wanderlust modus operandi, Tuvalu is the island for you: Melanesian culture is extremely hospitable, so you’ll often find yourself invited into locals’ homes for a drink and a chat.

most beautiful islands in the world Lombok, Indonesia Luxa Terra

Sure, everyone knows about Bali . But Lombok? It sometimes flies under the radar. Take note, though: Lombok is about as beautiful as it gets. Located just east of Bali , Lombok is a mountainous island sheathed in thick jungle, lined with gentle lapping shores.

Lombok is Bali’s laid-back older sister . This cool-as-anything island offers surfing, relaxed vibes, fantastic snorkelling, and plenty of exploring to boot. What’s more: you’re only a stone’s throw away from the famous Gili Islands, where you can dive the crystal-clear waters and perhaps befriend a turtle or two.

If responsible travel is your style, Lombok is perfect. With countless eco-friendly accommodations from which to choose, you can live the eco-chic dream. Get around on donkey-drawn carts, or, if you’re in a rush (unlikely), hop in a taxi. Family-friendly, romantic, and packed with activities, Lombok truly has it all.

most beautiful islands in the world Andaman Islands Luxa Terra

Not to be confused with the off-limits Nicobar islands, the Andaman Islands lie far to the east of the Bay of Bengal. If you go wild for pastel sunsets, crystalline waters, and coconut-white-sand beaches, the Andaman Islands are your mecca.

Comprising over 300 islands (of which 38 are inhabited), the Andamans are a far-flung utopia not easily matched. Divers flock to these remote isles, desperate to get amongst the cornucopia of sealife resident in the waters. Not a diving fan? No dramas: you can jump on a glass-bottom boat tour to explore the watery underworld behind the safety of thick glass.

Visitors can explore the islands via the ferries. They run from early in the morning, so you can spend a gorgeous day (or week) island-hopping until your wanderlust is satiated. And, while the islands have their fair share of concrete hotels, there are still plenty of rustic bamboo huts offering a more authentic stay.

most beautiful islands in the world Santorini, Greece Luxa Terra

One of the Cyclades islands nestled in the Aegean sea, Santorini is about as Greek-island as it gets. Famous for its bewitching white and azure buildings, Santorini is a photographer’s delight.

But, the mesmerising aesthetic doesn’t stop at the buildings: Santorini boasts a unique landscape thanks to a volcanic eruption centuries ago that left red, white, and black lava pebbles strewn across the island.

The best places to stay lie on the western edge of Santorini, with towns such as Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli attracting crowds every year. Why? One glance westwards from your balcony, and you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the (thankfully now dormant) volcano.

Delight your tastebuds with a smorgasbord of authentic Greek cuisine, wine-tasting, and use Santorini as a base to island-hop. Trust us: if there was ever an island sure to bedazzle, it’s Santorini.

most beautiful islands in the world Maldives Luxa Terra

The Maldives have long enjoyed a terrific reputation for barefoot luxury. The Indian Ocean islands are the embodiment of pure bliss, with startling white beaches and lush green jungle. However, it’s the aquatic underworld that makes this island destination so beguiling.

With spa-like waters boasting an average temperature of 29 °C (84 °F) year-round, it’s always a good time to hop on a plane. Immerse yourself in the teeming reefs, atoll lagoons, and rock pinnacles (or thila ) for an insight into the colourful world lying beneath the water’s surface. Eco-travellers, rejoice: the Maldives has recently granted protected status to 42 areas, helping to preserve the island’s precious ecology.

Of course, the Maldives are a collection of islands, each with its own unique atmosphere. Heading on your honeymoon? Head to Kandolhu for dreamy violet sunsets and exquisite villas. Jet-setting with your family? Check out the Niyama Private Islands for kid’s clubs, family-friendly activities, and even spa treatments just for little ones.

most beautiful islands in the world Palawan, Philippines Luxa Terra

Palawan island already made the cut for our take on the best beaches in the world , so it’s no surprise it takes the win for the best island, too. This Phillipino paradise stretches for 403 miles, ending tantalisingly close to the far-off Borneo. Its expanse means Palawan offers ample variety, be it biodiversity, language, or cuisine.

Home to the Underground River ( one of the 7 Wonders of the World) , much of Palawan island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, the island’s terrestrial and marine areas led to Palawan being voted the most beautiful island in the world in 2016, while its northern shore of El Nido took the prize for the most beautiful beach. Safe to say it’s unanimous—Palawan is paradise.

The dramatic topography is one of the many draws to this enchanting island, with a vast mountain range stretching from top to bottom. Framed with white shorelines (complete with towering palms and turquoise waters, of course), this island serves up a delicious slice of paradise to get your teeth stuck into.

most beautiful islands in the world The Cook Islands Luxa Terra

Perched a short 4750 kilometres from Australia’s east coast, the Cook Islands lie bang-smack in the middle of the Polynesian triangle. Yes, that means stunning beaches, friendly locals, and glorious Pacific sunsets. Oh, and the antithesis of our daily grind.

Admittedly, these tropical islands have experienced their fair share of over-tourism. However, they’ve made a conscious effort to clean things up: aiming to be the best green travel destination in the Pacific, there are plans for wind farms, solar power, and eco-conscious living.

Most of the Cook Islands’ tour operators strive to be eco-friendly already, and you can go snorkelling, on an eco-cycling adventure, or enjoy a culture-rich experience with local dancers (to name a few!). Book your flights for April to November to avoid the monsoon season, and check out the fantastic array of eco-luxury resorts to lay your jetlagged head.

most beautiful islands in the world St Lucia, Caribbean Luxa Terra

Ah, St Lucia: renowned for the iconic mountain twins erupting out of its west coast. A haven for the intrepid traveller and those with a taste for adventure, St Lucia offers a treasure chest of scenery, activities, and sumptuous cuisine. Like a woman who’s totally unaware of her own beauty, St Lucia is humble yet breathtaking .

While it’s tempting to while away your days lazing on the pristine beaches, St Lucia has plentiful activities to keep your mind and body active. Hike the Tet Paul Nature Trail for out-of-this-world views by day, and head to the Gros Islet Street Party by night for a true taste of Caribbean energy.

And to sleep? You’re spoiled for choice. Find tiny eco-friendly lodges tucked away in the hills, or head to one of the stylish resorts for a slice of the finer things. No matter where you stay, you’re sure to fall in love with the local hospitality, easy living, and rich culture.

most beautiful islands in the world Dalmatian Islands, Croatia Luxa Terra

Dotting the coastline of Croatia, the Dalmatian islands sit protected by the Adriatic Sea. Ist, Pag, and Vir are three of the most popular islands, boasting lush nature and traditional fishing villages (and we’re just scratching the surface).

If you go starry-eyed for resplendent landscapes, head to the Paklenica National Park for a buffet of deep canyons, jagged peaks, and diverse wildlife. Those with a penchant for parties, this is your place: the Dalmatian Islands are (in)famous for their buzzing music festivals, where you can groove to international dance, traditional Balkan tunes, and everything in between.

Fancy a dip? Voyage to the Plitvice Lakes National Park ( UNESCO-listed , no less) to enjoy a refreshing swim in the pure waters. With 16 inter-connected lakes spanning the park, you sure won’t be short of choice. And, if relaxation is the order du jour, grab a towel and settle down on one of the countless beaches.

most beautiful islands in the world Republic of Palau, Micronesia Luxa Terra

One of the lesser-known tropical islands, the Republic of Palau is a pocket of paradise sitting far to the east of the Philippines. So naturally, it’s stunning, with azure shores lapping at bright white beaches and more thick jungle than you could ever fully explore. However, it’s Palau’s commitment to sustainability that we find most impressive.

After arriving in Palau, you’ll a) breathe in the clean air and breathtaking beauty and b) be asked to sign a pledge, promising to behave in an eco-friendly and sustainable way during your stay. Yep, really . Don’t want to sign? No visa for you. Perhaps this seems cut-throat, but when you consider the plethora of wildlife, untouched corals, and plentiful marine wonders to boot, you can see why.

A shining example of how things should be done, Palau takes its environment seriously. Thus, when you visit, you’ll enjoy pristine scenery, welcoming locals (as long as you respect your pledge), and an insight into a different world—a better world.

Chumbe Island, Zanzibar

most beautiful islands in the world Chumbe Island, Zanzibar Luxa Terra

At Chumbe Island, Zanzibar, you’re only permitted a small dose of this island paradise. Popular for day trips (though you can stay overnight), this idyllic landscape is reachable by boat, so you can truly absorb the views en route . Not a people-person? Wonderful: due to its MPA (Marine Protected Area) status, there are only 14 visitors allowed on the island at any one time .

For a true escape from the daily grind, Chumbe Island is the place to visit. You can even organise an eco-bungalow to take a quick five in between your adventures. So, rent a wetsuit and snorkel and head out to the water for a glimpse of the 400 species of aquatic life populating the virgin coral reef .

Or, take a wander through the 16-hectare forest, alive with strange, beautiful creatures. There’s even a quaint boutique selling locally handmade wares, so you can take a piece of paradise home with you.

most beautiful islands in the world Madeira, Portugal Luxa Terra

Sure, you’ve likely sampled the eponymous wine from this wonderful island, but for a real taste of its beauty, you must take a trip. An oasis of lush green amidst the roaring Atlantic, Madeira offers a bounty of culture, eye-candy scenery, and pure holiday vibes.

So varied are the activities on Madeira, it’s easy to tailor your vacation just as you like it: swim in the lava pools of Porto Moniz, hike above the clouds along jagged mountains, or hop in a cable car to enjoy a birds-eye view over the city of Monte. Madeira is one of the best islands to visit for eco-luxury holidays, awash with eco-friendly hotels and charming farm stays.

Known as the ‘ island of eternal Spring ’, the moderate rainfall keeps this land emerald-green. Explore the region and fulfil your wanderlust, and when the sun sinks into the ocean, head to a bustling taverna and enjoy chats with the locals—they’re a friendly bunch.

most beautiful islands in the world Koh Lanta, Thailand Luxa Terra

Could we craft a list of the best islands without mentioning Thailand? Of course not. Koh Lanta is one of the country’s remaining pockets of utopia, as yet unspoiled by tourism. Though, one look at this idyllic island, and you can see why travellers flock there.

Though technically an archipelago, the main island of Koh Lanta is the one to visit. Only 27 by 10 kilometres, this compact portion of bliss is packed with beauty. Declared a national park in 1980, you’ll find 20 kilometres-squared of virgin rainforest , teeming with weird and wonderful wildlife.

Far from a party island, Koh Lanta is a haven for those seeking stillness, peace, and quiet. Recharge your batteries on one of the many beaches, or discover untouched beauty spots in the rainforest. And, if you fancy a little nightlife, there’s a small but refined scene on the island too.

most beautiful islands in the world Pumpkin Island, Australia Luxa Terra

The ultimate eco-retreat, Pumpkin Island is one of the most sustainable islands in the world. This eco-conscious community will welcome you with open arms—as long as you respect their environment. A place to truly rejuvenate, Pumpkin Island offers a fantastic array of soul-nourishing activities.

Cruise across the water on your very own SUP, watching the sun peek over the horizon at first light. Or, take a gentle jaunt along the spellbinding rock formations, revealed only at low tide. Um, glass-bottom kayaking? Yes, please . Get up close and personal with the native turtle population, who you’ll find minding their own business in the crystalline waters.

Admittedly, it’s the 6th most expensive private island in the world , so it’s best if you fancy splashing the cash. However, it’s totally worth it. With endless views over the Great Barrier Reef, Pumpkin Island makes an eco-vacation you won’t forget.

most beautiful islands in the world Sri Lanka Luxa Terra

Enter a whole new world: welcome to Sri Lanka. The ‘teardrop of India’ serves up a rainbow of culture and an inherent energy that’s unique to the tropical island.

Touch down in Colombo and take the winding coastal train down to the south coast, peppered with golden beaches. Despite being close (you can take a 10-minute train to reach the next beach), each coastal community offers a different feel. From vibing Hikkaduwa to surfer’s paradise Midigama, there are enough waves, bars, and golden sands to go around.

If you crave something other than beaches, head to the interior. The Tea Country is jam-packed with rolling hills, vast tea plantations , and friendly tea growers who’ll happily let you sample their wares. In Sri Lanka, every day is packed with a lifetime of adventure. Our tip? Don’t forget your camera.

most beautiful islands in the world Viti Levu, Fiji Luxa Terra

If intrigue is what you aim for, head over to Viti Levu, one of Fiji’s two main islands. Viti Levu’s hero attraction is its swathes of beautiful nature, from sultry mangroves to natural hot springs . Thankfully, this isn’t a ‘look don’t touch’ situation, either: get immersed in Viti Levu’s plentiful beauty spots by kayak, foot, or snorkel.

And yes, we did say hot springs. The Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool is a must-visit, where you can get down and dirty with that glorious, skin-friendly mud. Then, for a slice of serenity, take a wander through the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, and take in the wonderful sights that await you.

For those seeking sustainable holidays, Viti Levu will steal your heart. Brimming with eco-friendly accommodation options, you’ll have the lion’s share of eco-lodges, retreats, and glamping options. Oh, and did we mention the kava? Take a sip of this euphoria-inducing (yet totally legal) drink, just like the locals.

Heron Island, Australia

If you were to paint a picture of the ultimate island paradise, no doubt it would closely resemble Heron Island. A jewel in the crown of the Great Barrier Reef , Heron Island is also Australia’s mother of pearl: precious, raw, and untouched.

In fact, the adventure begins before you even arrive: access Heron Island via boat or seaplane, and meander across still turquoise seas (or open skies) to get your spirit prepared for island-living.

In the summer months, you’ll be sharing this bliss with over 200,000 birds . From black noddies to Pacific reef herons, you won’t be short of skyward eye candy. However, grab your snorkel, and you’ll be treated to over 1,500 fish species swanning around your ankles.

Since the whole island is a national park , you can expect pristine scenery, a commitment to sustainable travel, and an eco-conscious approach to life. Naturally, if this were your back garden, you’d want to keep it perfect.

Maui, Hawaii

most beautiful islands in the world Maui, Hawaii Luxa Terra

Hawaii’s second most-visited island, Maui, is a no-brainer on any ‘best islands’ list worth its salt. Upon arrival, the island’s energy will have you diving headfirst into the vibrant culture, glorious sunrises and sunsets, and maze of waterfalls, lakes, and coves.

You’ll be spoiled for choice with the organic extravaganza of cafes and restaurants, with many serving farm-to-plate dishes that’ll have your tastebuds tingling. In between sampling the local cuisine, head to the Haleakala national park, with an enchanting landscape straight out of Jurassic Park .

Or, take a bike or car along the Hana Highway, a winding road hugging the coast, ending in the slow-moving town of Hana. We love that Maui serves up something for everyone, and we’re not just talking about the food. Families, couples, and thrill-seeking friends alike will find a home in Maui—it’s everyone’s cup of tea.

most beautiful islands in the world Bora-Bora, French Polynesia Luxa Terra

When we think of the tropics, we think of Bora-Bora. But have you ever been there? If not, that needs to change, trust us. Certainly the star of the show in French Polynesia, Bora-Bora epitomises Pacific beauty.

Newly-weds have long enjoyed the post-marital bliss offered by this languid island, where couples can relax into the oceanic oasis that is Bora-Bora. Spend your days exploring the numerous beaches (you’ll pinch yourself when you see them—their surreal charm more like a dream than reality).

Mount Otemanu and its sister peak Mount Pahia make an imposing centrepiece to this magical island. Though they make up an extinct volcano, this dramatic silhouette is softened by the shrouds of hibiscus carpeting the slopes.

So, if you adore the idea of pure Pacific bliss , complete with coconuts, palms, and flower leis, Bora-Bora is a must.

most beautiful islands in the world Mallorca, Spain Luxa Terra

If you live in Europe, consider yourself grateful: the Balearic bliss of Mallorca is right on your doorstep. The largest of the Balearic isles and a calmer alternative to the club-capital Ibiza, Mallorca offers a pinch of serenity amidst the Mediterranean .

Interested in sustainable destinations? Book that flight, now. Mallorca is spearheading an eco-friendly movement within the Balearics. A recent ban on single-use plastics serves to clean up the beaches, while plans for extended cycling routes will encourage green travel. And travel, you must .

Mallorca is home to a diverse landscape, with mountain ranges, pristine beaches, and ample caves, lookouts, and viewpoints to discover. With the old town of Alcudia to the north and the world’s-away capital of Palma further south, you can opt for picturesque tranquillity or tantalising nightlife . Or, well, both . Yes, in Mallorca, you can have your paella and eat it, too.

Frequently asked questions about the best islands in the world

We’re spoiled for choice when it comes to the best islands in the world. If we have to choose, however: 1. Bora-Bora, French Polynesia 2. Isla Holbox, Mexico 3. Sri Lanka 4. Palawan, Philippines 5. Tuvalu, Oceania 6. Madeira, Portugal 7. Maui, Hawaii 8. Pumpkin Island, Australia 9. Koh Lanta, Thailand 10. Heron Island, Australia

A better term is ‘eco-friendly’. An eco-friendly island reflects the community’s commitment to green practices, whether reducing plastic waste, encouraging carbon neutrality, or protecting their ecology. Preferably, you’ll see all of the above.

Palawan and the Maldives both took top spots for the most beautiful islands in the world. One look at their spectacular beauty, and it’s easy to see why. Check our list of the best islands in the world to find your island paradise.

St Lucia is one of the prettiest Caribbean islands. Its dramatic landscape and charming locals combine with a rich culture, along with glorious beaches. What more could you want from a tropical island?

Our Readers' Favorite 25 Islands in the World in 2021

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in the world .

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The best islands in the world, according to T+L readers, are the kind of Instagram-perfect destinations that travelers fantasize about on winter evenings: dreamy, sun-drenched landscapes surrounded by the bluest waters . And since there's an island destination for everyone, what constitutes "paradise" likely boils down to specific interests — history, culture, heart-pumping adventure, or something else entirely.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

Looking to spot iguanas lazing about and sea lions playing with snorkelers in the waters off the white beaches? The Galápagos (No. 10) is for you. For unrivaled diving, there is Koh Samui in Thailand (No. 7) and the Philippines' Palawan (No. 19). If you're hoping to spend your days indulging in homemade pasta and wine from local vineyards, consider Sicily (No. 6) or Sardinia (No. 16).

Plenty of options abound for those who want to stay closer to home. "Bring a camera, lots of reading material, and walk the fabulous powdery beach," said one reader of Harbour Island (No. 17), a Bahamian paradise renowned for its pink sands. Another favorite: the volcanic island St. Lucia (No. 20). "Anse Chastanet Beach is beautiful with the black sand and small snorkeling area," shared a voter. "You have to pay a fee for usage, but it is worth it."

As in so many years, it was a Greek island that emerged as readers' top choice. Find out why they consider Mílos No. 1 among the best islands in the world.

1. Mílos, Greece

Located in the middle of the Cycladic islands, Mílos rose from its No. 3 spot last year thanks to friendly locals who welcome visitors to explore the quaint villages (Trypiti is famous for its windmills, Plaka for its sunsets), extraordinary tavernas, and dozens of picturesque beaches that vary in color depending on whether they are formed from shells, stones, or sand. Visitors will find many options for lodging. "We stayed at a small B&B right on the water," shared one reader. "Great location." But if you're looking to spoil yourself, consider splurging on Milos Cove, a minimalist 42-room aerie where private pools offer unrivaled views of the Aegean.

The Best Road to Hana Tours in Maui

Maui's Road to Hāna is a perfect example of how sometimes the journey can be just as rewarding as the destination. This coastal drive, which connects Kahului to the town of Hāna in east Maui, is dotted with awe-inspiring attractions, from cascading waterfalls and towering rainbow eucalyptus trees to vast bamboo forests and colorful beaches. But with 620 curves and 59 bridges (most of which are one lane wide), the 52-mile-long route can be as dangerous as it is beautiful – which is why the Hawaii Tourism Authority encourages visitors to opt for a guided tour as opposed to navigating the road themselves.

Factoring in both expert opinion and traveler sentiment, U.S. News highlights the best driving tours for the ultimate Road to Hāna experience.

  • Best Overall: Dynamic Tour Hawaii – Road to Hana Adventure Tour with Pickup, Breakfast & Lunch

Best for Families: Stardust Hawaii – Famous Road to Hana Waterfalls and Lunch

Best private: experience hawaii – vip road to hana private tour with pickup, best eco-friendly: valley isle excursions – road to hāna tour.

  • Best Small Group: Mahalo Tours & Transportation – The Road to Hana Tour

Best Luxury: Temptation Tours – Hana Ultimate Tour

Best half-day: the magic of maui experience – road to hana lite, best overall: dynamic tour hawaii – road to hana adventure tour with pickup, breakfast & lunch.

U.S. News independently paid to send Ashley Probst , a freelance journalist based in Maui, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Dynamic Tour Hawaii – Road to Hana Adventure Tour was selected by our team as the Best Overall thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

Price: Adults from $199.99; kids from $189.99 Duration: 8-11 hours

Unwind and take in the stunning sights of the Valley Isle on Dynamic Tour Hawaii's unforgettable Road to Hana tour. After being picked up from your hotel or a meeting point in Kahului, the group will enjoy breakfast at Island Fresh Cafe in Pā'ia before hitting Hāna Highway. Guides will include the entire group's requests in planning the day's itinerary to ensure everyone's preferences are considered.

Along the way, your guide will share fascinating facts about Hawaiian history, culture, local plants and other unique insights – like how Nita Chong's banana bread at the Halfway to Hana rest stop is not only the same family recipe as Aunty Sandy's famous version, it's also the original.   Destinations may include breathtaking spots like a rainbow eucalyptus tree grove, Kaumahina State Wayside Park, lookouts at Ke'anae Peninsula and Wailua Valley, Waiʻānapanapa State Park 's black sand beach and lunch, Pua'a Ka'a State Park for a waterfall swim and Ho'okipa Beach Park to observe Hawaiian green sea turtles. You'll also enjoy treats along the way: specialty sweets from East Maui Chocolate, coffee and fruit at Hāna Harvest Cafe (with a chance to feed the piglets, if you're lucky), vegan ice cream at Coconut Glen's and the beloved banana bread at Halfway to Hana.

Caring for paradise, one trip at a time in the Frankland Islands

wonderful island travel and tours

This article is brought to you by Australian Wildlife Journeys.

The Great Barrier Reef’s Frankland Islands are a ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’ kind of place. But this Far North Queensland archipelago is far more than a tropical idyll – think rare, star-shaped sand, Ice Age-era plant life, and an ocean that pops with Nemos, Dories and Crushes.

But even before you reach the islands, there are wonders aplenty – UNESCO World Heritage-listed rainforest, sprawling fields of sugar cane and the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world – iconic Walsh’s Pyramid.

wonderful island travel and tours

Your day trip to the archipelago begins on the Mulgrave River, where saltwater crocodiles laze on mangrove-lined banks and birds bustle in the overhanging canopy.

From the mouth of the Mulgrave, it’s a 10km trip to Normanby Island – the shortest open-water crossing of any of the Cairns day tours – at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

Frankland Islands Reef Cruises is the only commercial operator licensed to land on Normanby and carries only 100 guests at a time on its spacious and comfortable Turtle Islander vessel. According to reef guide Andy Ratter, “Once we’re on the island, we customise the day to suit people’s interests – from snorkelling to guided island tours, exploring the sea floor [while staying dry] on our semi-submarine tour, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.”

wonderful island travel and tours

The Frankland Group National Park is an archipelago located about 45km southeast of Cairns. The group’s five continental islands (Normanby, High, Russell, Round and Mabel) are part of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

All the islands are uninhabited and surrounded by healthy fringing reefs, full of hard and soft corals, giant clams, schools of fish, turtles, rays and more. Dugongs and whales are often sighted here, and during the months of May and June, manta rays visit the shallow fringing reefs around the islands.

“There’s plentiful coral straight off the beach,” Andy says. “But for guests who want to go deeper, we offer a 45-minute guided snorkel safari to explore some of the best areas of reef around the island.”

wonderful island travel and tours

As well as guiding, Andy and his colleagues use their time in the water to monitor the reef.

“We’re in the water most days of the week and have been trained by [assessment program] Eye on the Reef to conduct Tourism Weekly surveys to monitor water quality, reef health and algal build-up, as well as monitoring both keystone and iconic species and reporting on coral health,” Andy says.

“The fringing reef around the island differs in several ways to the reefs visited by most boats departing from Cairns, due to the nature of the currents around the islands and the proximity to the mainland, and particularly the outflow from the Mulgrave/Russell river system.

“These factors have led to a very dense and resilient reef system, with abundant seagrass in the shallows supporting a population of turtles [both green and hawksbill] often seen in very shallow water. This is particularly evident on the western [inland-facing] side of the island, where the snorkel safari usually takes place.

“There are also many sea anemones close to shore, including a very unusual variety of blue giant carpet anemone. Unlike other reefs, where a wide variety of different species of anemone fish predominate, our anemones are populated almost exclusively by true clownfish, more commonly known as Nemo.”

wonderful island travel and tours

Guides also host an island walk on Normanby, which takes about an hour and, Andy says, explores the history, geology and natural flora and fauna of the island and its surrounding reefs.

“Normanby’s highest peak is 20m,” he says. “It’s a continental island and is home to rainforest vegetation as well as coastal species. The cool-water channels surrounding the island keep sea temperatures lower during the hot summer months.”

“As part of the Great Barrier Reef, Normanby formed 6,000–10,000 years ago, when, at the end of the last Ice Age, waters rose up to 120m to flood the coastal plains and produce the islands we see today. This process is noted in the geological record as well as in the traditional oral histories of the local Indigenous peoples.”

According to Andy, the island is slowly “growing” because of ongoing sand and coral deposition.

“Storms and cyclones impact the island and contribute to the accumulation of broken corals, which form a large part of the beaches.

“At different points on the tour, we stop to look at the types of corals [branching, plate, boulder] in the sand, and explain the life cycles of the individual coral animals.

“We also discuss the threats to the ongoing health of the reef – climate change, including bleaching due to increasing ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, more frequent cyclones and crown-of-thorn starfish outbreaks.”

At low tide, guides and guests spend time in the exposed intertidal rockpools searching for animals including starfish, giant clams, sea cucumbers, shellfish, stingrays, small hunting sharks, seabirds and even turtles.

“One of the things our guests enjoy most about the rockpools is meeting the resident clownfish in water at a depth of only a few inches.”

On the beach itself, there are collections of washed-up seeds, including those of the mangrove. “They’re such an important part of the Great Barrier Reef in terms of coastal protection, carbon capture and fish nursery habitat,” Andy says.

At the southern end of the island is “star-sand” that, Andy says, are tiny, perfectly formed star-shaped granules.

“These are ‘tests’ [calcium carbonate shells]. They’re all that remain of the living foraminifera [aka forams], single-celled protozoan creatures that inhabit the surrounding waters.”

While there are many different species of forams, which are abundant in the sea, these varieties appear to be very rare, initially known from only a few islands in southern Japan. “The Frankland Islands appear to be one of the only areas in the southern hemisphere where they are reliably found,” Andy says.

At day’s end, Turtle Islander follows the sun west towards ‘home’, leaving in its wake an ocean full of turtles, sharks and rays, rockpools full of starfish, anemones and Nemo, and a seashore littered with glistening, star-shaped sand. All being diligently cared for by Andy and his fellow reef guides.
