Pour entamer la découverte du grand désert du Sahara, nous vous suggérons de faire cette excursion de deux jours qui vous mènera jusque vers les dunes de Zagora. Malgré la brièveté de ce circuit, vous vivrez pleinement toutes ses étapes qui vous attendent de l’autre côté des montagnes du Haut Atlas.

Vos plus beaux souvenirs seront certainement les nombreux villages berbères que vous croiserez durant le parcours, avec les imposantes kasbahs en terre comme celles d’Aït ben Haddou et de Tamnougalte, mais encore les vallées fertiles avec leurs palmiers et leurs arbres fruitiers, leurs noix et leurs amandes, les rivières saisonnières et les oasis verdoyantes.

Le long de l’ancienne route des caravanes, vous découvrirez quelques-unes des traces de la longue histoire du Maroc. Circuit de 2 jours dans les dunes de zagora depuis marrakech – itinéraire:, 1 er  jour : marrakech – zagora.

Départ en 4×4 à partir de 8.30 depuis votre hôtel ou votre riad de Marrakech pour traverser les montagnes du Haut Atlas et le célèbre col de Tizi-n-Tichka (2260 m). Sur ce parcours, vous pourrez admirer les vallées et les villages berbères en pisé accrochés aux flancs des montagnes. Un spectacle à vous couper le souffle !

Au sud d’Ouarzazate, sur l’autre versant des montagnes, vous franchirez un autre petit col, celui de Tizi-n-Tinififft (1660 m), pour atteindre le point de départ de la vallée du Drâa au niveau de la palmeraie d’Agdez. Pendant un court moment, nous quitterons la route principale pour suivre une partie de l’ancienne piste des caravanes entre les montagnes et la rivière. En traversant les nombreux villages et jardins, vous aurez un aperçu du mode de vie berbère dans les oasis.

Une fois à Zagora, vous ferez la très attendue promenade à dos de chameau pour atteindre les dunes d’où vous pourrez admirer le coucher de soleil, moment toujours spectaculaire. Vous pourrez également vous rendre au camp en 4×4, si vous le préférez. Ces dunes sont petites par rapport aux autres plus au sud et à l’est. Cependant, elles sont les plus proches de Marrakech pour une excursion de deux jours dans le désert.

Vous passerez alors la nuit dans un camp de luxe dans le désert, avec salle de bain privée, lits king size, mobilier marocain fait à la main et lampes, le tout disposé avec goût pour vous permettre de profiter du silence et de la beauté des dunes.

2 ème  jour : Zagora — Marrakech

Si vous vous levez assez tôt pour assister au lever du soleil, votre court séjour dans les dunes de Zagora vous apportera le rare bonheur d’un magnifique théâtre d’ombres et de lumières chatoyantes projetées sur les dunes. Après le petit-déjeuner, vous vous dirigerez vers le sud pour visiter la bibliothèque coranique de Tamegroute qui héberge d’innombrables manuscrits des temps anciens.

Une autre étape sera la visite des poteries locales de Tamegroute qui produisent les célèbres poteries recouvertes d’émail vert, objets que vous verrez dans tout le sud du pays comme dans la médina de Marrakech.

Au nord d’Ouarzazate, vous quitterez la route principale de Marrakech pour visiter le site classé patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, le ksar d’Aït Ben Haddou. Ce ksar, c’est-à-dire ce village fortifié, est le plus célèbre du Maroc et constitue un élément essentiel de toute visite dans le sud. Le ksar a été utilisé pour le tournage de nombreux films hollywoodiens. Plus important encore, c’est ici que les marchands apportaient autrefois les esclaves, l’or, l’ivoire et le sel de l’Afrique subsaharienne avant de les acheminer vers Marrakech et au-delà. Aït Ben Haddou avec toutes ses kasbahs constituent donc un élément important de l’histoire du Maroc.

Le long de la route de la magnifique vallée de l’Ounila, immortalisée par les peintures de Jacques Majorelle au début du 20ème siècle, en direction du nord, vous aurez un autre aperçu du mode de vie des Berbères ruraux. En haut de cette route, vous rejoindrez la kasbah de Telouet qui appartenait aux seigneurs de l’Atlas, la famille Glaoui. Le dernier pacha s’est vu confisquer ses biens pour avoir comploté contre le roi et les bâtiments sont aujourd’hui des ruines, les bâtiments des 16ème et 19ème siècles étant particulièrement délabrés.

Malheureusement, toute la kasbah est aujourd’hui fermée au public en raison des dégâts causés par le tremblement de terre qui a frappé le Maroc en septembre 2023. Néanmoins, il vaut la peine d’être visité avec un guide local car sa façade extérieure illustre encore sa riche histoire.

De retour sur la route principale de Marrakech, vous traverserez de nombreux villages berbères le long de la rivière bordée de magnifiques lauriers roses et de peupliers. Les jardins regorgent d’olives, de noix, de grenades, de pommes, de poires et de coings.

Votre aventure dans le désert se terminera lorsque nous atteindrons Marrakech en fin d’après-midi.

Zagora est le nom donné à la ville qui sert de porte d'entrée au plus grand désert du Maroc : le désert de l'Erg Chigaga. En raison de sa proximité, de nombreuses personnes appellent l'Erg Chigaga le désert de Zagora. En tant que destination touristique, il est moins exploité que l'Erg Chebbi, mais c'est une alternative au potentiel extraordinaire que vous devriez envisager d'ajouter à votre liste de choses à faire lors de votre voyage à Marrakech.

1. Excursion en camping dans le désert de Zagora sous les étoiles

M'Hamid est la dernière grande oasis du désert et un lieu historique très cher aux locaux. Elle était aussi connue sous le nom de Bounou et abritait autrefois plusieurs tribus berbères du sud (Ait Atta, Drawa et Hassani). La légende veut que les caravanes s'y rassemblaient avant de partir pour Tombouctou.

Outre la traversée du désert à bord d'un véhicule à moteur et les magnifiques paysages de l'oasis, vous pourrez déjeuner tranquillement dans le désert, sous de superbes palmiers.

4. Excursion dans la vallée du Drâa

Connue à l'origine sous le nom de Vallée des Oliviers jusqu'au XIXe siècle, c'est un site d'une grande valeur historique qui a longtemps hébergé les caravanes du désert. Prenez le temps d'apprécier la beauté du lieu en accordant une attention particulière :

• La magnifique palmeraie de la vallée du Draâ : des jardins remplis de palmiers dattiers s'étendent sur des kilomètres entre la ville et la rivière qui forme la vallée du Draâ. Plus de 30 variétés de dattes poussent dans cette région et sont récoltées chaque année de septembre à novembre. Les palmiers de cette vallée, en plus d'offrir ombre et abri à tous ceux qui en ont besoin, se sont révélés être une denrée très polyvalente, utilisée pour fabriquer des paniers, des nattes de feuilles et d'autres ustensiles.
• La rivière Draâ elle-même : dans cette région se trouve la plus longue rivière du Maroc , qui coule des montagnes du Haut Atlas vers le sud-est. Il s'étend sur 1 100 km, traverse Zagora et s'arrête pour une bonne gestion à un barrage à Ouarzazate. Vers le sud et pendant l'été, la rivière est généralement pleine d'eau, il est donc typique de voir les enfants de la région nager et profiter de ses eaux.

5. Excursion pour visiter les Kasbahs d'Aït Benhaddou

Kasbah est le terme arabe qui désigne à la fois les citadelles et les fortifications au sens large du terme. La kasbah d'Aït Benhaddou est une impressionnante construction architecturale située dans la ville de Ouarzazate, qui est devenue célèbre dans le monde entier en 1962, lorsqu'elle a fait ses débuts dans le film britannique Lawrence d'Arabie .

Lors de votre visite de Zagora, vous entendrez peut-être plus d'une fois l'expression "voir Ouarzazate et mourir", un sentiment souvent exprimé par les Marocains qui leur permet de verbaliser leur respect et leur admiration pour cette ville magique.

Où se trouve Ouarzazate ?

Ouarzazate est la principale ville berbère du sud et est mondialement connue pour ses couchers de soleil spectaculaires et ses paysages montagneux et désertiques. Elle se trouve à 2,5 heures de route de Zagora. Au départ de Marrakech, il faut compter 4 heures de route.

L'histoire de la ville est également fascinante, car elle était autrefois un point de passage pour les commerçants africains qui cherchaient à atteindre les villes du nord du Maroc et de l'Europe.

Comment se rendre dans le désert de Zagora ?

Il y a plusieurs façons de se rendre dans le désert de Zagora :

Les circuits organisés au départ de Marrakech : la meilleure alternative est un circuit organisé de Marrakech à Zagora. Il s'agit d'un circuit entièrement géré par des guides experts qui vous emmèneront dans les endroits les plus intéressants et veilleront à votre sécurité et à votre bien-être à tout moment.

Louer un véhicule privé à Marrakech : recommandé si vous avez de l'expérience sur la route et que vous voulez aller à votre propre rythme, en vous arrêtant aux endroits de votre choix. Le carburant et les péages doivent être pris en compte dans votre budget de voyage.

En avion : si vous partez de Marrakech, vous ne pouvez pas vous rendre directement à Zagora. L'option la plus répandue est donc de voler jusqu'à Ouarzazate et d'emprunter ensuite un tronçon de route de 2,5 heures.

En bus : il s'agit d'un voyage long et complexe qui peut être fatigant et que je ne recommande pas si c'est la première fois que vous venez dans le pays.

• Excellent pour éviter les foules : Idéal pour éviter les foules pendant les saisons touristiques les plus chargées . Très intime et romantique.
• Idéal pour éviter les longs trajets : Si vous partez de la ville de Marrakech , l'Erg Chigaga vous offre l'avantage de pouvoir faire un voyage dans le désert en seulement 2 jours , avec un temps maximum de 8 heures de route en incluant les arrêts intéressants.

Inconvénients de choisir le désert de Zagora pour votre voyage

• Moins d'options d'hébergement : Par rapport à l'Erg Chebbi, vous trouverez moins de campements dans le désert et moins d'options d'hébergement. Cependant, les offres existantes sont tout aussi confortables et luxueuses.
• Les dunes : À mon avis, le plus grand inconvénient est que les dunes de l'Erg Chigaga, ayant moins d'accumulation de sable et par conséquent moins de hauteur, sont moins impressionnantes.

Quelle est la meilleure période pour visiter le désert de Zagora au Maroc ?

La meilleure période de l'année pour visiter le désert de Zagora au Maroc se situe soit vers le mois de mai , soit vers le mois d'octobre .

Pendant ces deux périodes, les températures diurnes sont assez douces et les journées sont moins chaudes. Pendant les mois d'hiver saharien , les températures nocturnes descendent souvent en dessous de zéro. Si vous êtes une personne habituée au froid et que vous pouvez supporter de tels scénarios, vous pouvez envisager de visiter le désert en hiver. En été , en revanche, la chaleur du désert est particulièrement difficile à supporter, avec des températures avoisinant en moyenne les 45 degrés Celsius. En fait, certains circuits sont obligés de fermer pendant deux semaines en juillet et en septembre.

Que porter dans le désert de Zagora ?

D'une manière générale, rappelez-vous que les Marocains sont une culture conservatrice . Essayez de vous habiller selon leurs coutumes pour ne pas les offenser. Lors des randonnées dans le désert, portez des vêtements en coton ou en lin qui respirent.

Il est également utile d'emporter des chapeaux , des casquettes et des lunettes de soleil , ainsi qu'un foulard pour protéger votre visage. La nuit, les températures sont très froides, aussi prévoyez des vêtements chauds et des chaussettes.

Parmi les autres articles utiles, citons une trousse de premiers soins de base , de la crème solaire, un chargeur portable (il en existe qui se rechargent à la lumière du soleil), de l'eau fraîche et un en-cas riche en protéines.

Zagora fut autrefois, un centre caravanier pour les grands convois transsahariens et reste encore aujourd'hui fortement imprégné de ses traditions ancestrales.

Implantée au cœur du Souss-Massa-Drâa et entourée de spectaculaires paysages désertiques, Zagora est une étape très agréable pour une pause thé ou un déjeuner en terrasse.

This town used to be the departure point for the caravans going to Timbuktu for trading reasons. The journey took 52 walking days. In this town we have lunch. Hereafter we go to the sand dunes of Tinfou for a one-hour camel ride. Back to Ouarzazate in the same way.

Jour 1 : Aït-ben-Haddou - La Vallée du Drâa - Zagora

Vous partirez de Marrakech à 08h00 pour une aventure mémorable vers Zagora . Vous traverserez le col de Tizi-N-Tichka à 2 260 m d'altitude , offrant une vue panoramique à couper le souffle sur les villages berbères nichés dans les montagnes du Moyen Atlas.

Votre première escale, la légendaire Kasbah de Aït-ben-Haddou , vous transportera dans l'histoire fascinante de cette merveille architecturale. Vous continuerez votre voyage à travers le Moyen Atlas , passant par le village berbère d'Agdez et la Vallée du Drâa , où les palmiers s'étendront à perte de vue. Vous plongerez dans la végétation luxuriante avant d'entrer dans le magnifique désert.

Une fois arrivés à Zagora, vous vivrez une expérience inoubliable en montant à dos de chameau pour admirer le coucher de soleil dans le désert . Jour 2 : Zagora - La Vallée du Drâa - Ouarzazate 

Vous commencerez la journée en admirant lever de soleil dans le désert et en prenant votre petit-déjeuner . Vous pourrez ensuite vous doucher avant de profiter d'une balade de 40 minutes à dos de chameau dans le désert.

Vous parcourrez la Vallée du Drâa et passerez par Agdez avant d'arriver à Ouarzazate , où vous visiterez la Kasbah Taourirt qui vous dévoilera ses trésors historiques. L'après-midi, vous retournerez à Marrakech avec la possibilité de faire une pause pour déguster un délicieux repas à Ouarzazate ou en chemin.

Votre aventure se terminera en début de soirée à Marrakech, après avoir découvert des paysages spectaculaires et la passionnante culture berbère.

5 Excursions to the Zagora Desert in Morocco from Marrakech

No trip to Morocco would be complete without an excursion to the magical sands of the Sahara. The Zagora desert is a fantastic alternative to enjoy beautiful sunsets and dromedary rides.

Zagora is the name given to the city that serves as the gateway to the largest desert in all of Morocco: the Erg Chigaga Desert. Because of its proximity, many people call Erg Chigaga with the name of Zagora desert. On a tourist level, it is a less exploited destination than Erg Chebbi, but an alternative with extraordinary potential that you should consider adding to the list of things to do during your trip to Marrakech.

1. Excursion to camp under the stars in the Zagora desert

A sleeping excursion in the Moroccan desert is a fascinating proposition on your visit to the Zagora desert. At the foot of the dunes are installed luxury camps that promise guests the experience of living a night in the desert in the style of The Thousand and One Nights.

Accommodation

Most camps have a similar layout : in the center is a lounge where you can relax on comfortable mattresses. Some include open tents with chairs, hammocks, puffs and sofas. The sleeping area will be composed of several private tents where the bedrooms are located, inside which you will find different amenities : king size beds, carpets, night tables, mirrors and armchairs.

In most camps the bathrooms will include a toilet, dressing room and laundry area. However, due to water shortages in some cases only buckets of water will be provided for personal hygiene. Don't forget to check in detail all the facilities that the excursions offer , as well as those that are not included in the package, so that you can make a realistic travel budget.

• Price: You will find varied prices ranging from 100 € to 230 € per person. This price usually includes not only an overnight stay in the desert but also transportation to and from Marrakech, the accompaniment of a professional guide, dinner and breakfast.
• Duration of the excursion: Usually two days, as the excursions depart from Marrakech the first day in the morning and arrive the next day in the afternoon. The total duration will depend on the activities in the desert in addition to the overnight camping.

2. Excursion with camel ride in the dunes of Tinfou in Erg Chigaga

To fully experience the Zagora desert, you should plan a camel ride in the dunes, a perfect way to enjoy the unique colors of the sunset on Moroccan soil.

The Tinfou Dunes , located in Erg Chigaga, are famous for their healing qualities. In fact, the Berber peoples claim that they are able to cure diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. You can ask your guide to bury your body under the sand for a spa-like experience.

• Price: The average price of this excursion is 20 € to 40 € per trip and per person.
• Duration of the excursion: Varies depending on the tour you hire, with tours from 1 hour to a maximum of 3 hours including several stops.

3. Excursion to the desert of Zagora in a 4X4 to visit the Oasis of M'Hamid

You will have the opportunity to explore the Sahara desert to the oasis of M'Hamid aboard a 4x4, a very original adventure.

M'Hamid is the last great Oasis of the desert and a historical place very dear to the locals. It was also known by the name of Bounou and once housed several Berber tribes from the south (Ait Atta, Drawa and Hassani). Legend has it that caravans gathered here before setting out on their journeys to Timbuktu.

In addition to enjoying the exciting journey through the desert in a motor vehicle and the beautiful scenery of the Oasis, you can also enjoy a leisurely lunch in the desert under fantastic palm trees.

• Price: An excursion to the Zagora desert by 4X4 with a visit to the Oasis of M'Hamid usually costs on average 70 € or more.
• Duration of the excursion: It usually lasts one day, departing early in the morning until sunset.

4. Excursion to the Draa valley

Explore one of the most popular tourist spots in Zagora desert excursions by visiting the Draâ Valley . Originally known as the Valley of Olives until the 19th century, this is a settlement of great historical value that for long periods provided accommodation for desert caravans. Take the time to appreciate the beauty of the place paying special attention to:

• The beautiful Draâ Valley Palm Grove : Gardens filled with date palms stretch for miles between the city and the river that makes up the Draâ Valley. More than 30 varieties of dates grow in this region and are harvested every year from September to November. The palms of this valley proved, in addition to offering shade and shelter to all who need it, to be a highly versatile commodity option used to make baskets, leaf mats and other utensils.
• The Draâ River itself : In this area you will find the longest river in Morocco flowing from the High Atlas Mountains to the southeast. It stretches for 1,100 km, passes through Zagora and stops for proper management at a dam located in Ouarzazate. Towards the southern area and during the summer, the river is usually full of water, so it is typical to see local children swimming and enjoying its waters.

5. Excursion to visit Aït Benhaddou Kasbahs

Kasbah is the Arabic term that refers to both citadels and fortifications in a very broad sense of the word. Aït Benhaddou Kasbahs is an impressive architectural construction located in the city of Ouarzazate that became world famous in 1962 when it debuted in the British film Lawrence of Arabia .

On your tour of Zagora you may hear more than once the term "see Ouarzazate and die", a sentiment often expressed by Moroccans that allows them to verbalize their respect and admiration for this magical city.

Where is Ouarzazate located?

Ouarzazate is the main Berber city in the south and is world famous for its spectacular sunsets and its mountainous and desert landscapes. On a trip from Zagora the city is 2.5 hours by road. On a trip from Marrakech it is 4 hours by car.

The history of the city is also fascinating, as it was once a crossing point for African traders seeking to reach the cities of northern Morocco and Europe.

• Price: This excursion costs from 35 €.
• Duration of the excursion: It has a duration of 12 hours from Marrakech.

How to get to the desert of Zagora?

There are several ways to get to the Zagora desert :

Organized tours from Marrakech : The best alternative is an organized tour from Marrakech to Zagora. It includes a tour fully managed by expert guides who will take you through the most interesting points and will take care of your safety and well-being at all times.

Rent a private vehicle in Marrakech : Recommended if you have experience on the route and want to go at your own pace making stops at points of your choice. You should consider in your travel budget the cost of fuel and tolls.

By plane : If you travel from Marrakech you can not fly directly to Zagora, so a popular option is to fly to Ouarzazate and then make a road section of 2.5 hours.

By bus : This is a long and complex trip that can be exhausting and I do not recommend it at all if it is your first time in the country.

Advantages of visiting the Zagora desert

• Excellent to avoid crowds: It is ideal to avoid crowds in times of high tourist influx . Very intimate and romantic.
• Ideal to avoid long trips: If you go to the desert from the city of Marrakech , Erg Chigaga offers the advantage of being able to make a trip to the desert in just 2 days , with a maximum time of 8 hours of road including interesting stops.

Disadvantages of choosing the Zagora desert for your trip

• Fewer accommodation options: Compared to Erg Chebbi you will find fewer desert camps and less accommodation alternatives. However, the existing offers are just as comfortable and luxurious.
• The dunes: In my opinion, the biggest disadvantage is that the dunes of Erg Chigaga, having less sand accumulation and consequently less height, are less impressive.

What is the best time to visit the Zagora desert in Morocco?

The best time of the year to visit the Zagora desert in Morocco is either in the months around May or around October . In both periods the daytime temperatures are quite mild and the days are less hot.

During the Saharan winter months , temperatures at night often drop below freezing. If you are a person accustomed to the cold and can handle such scenarios, you might consider visiting the desert in winter. In the summer months the desert heat is particularly difficult to handle, with temperatures averaging around 45 degrees Celsius. In fact, some tours are forced to close for a couple of weeks during the months of July and September.

What to wear in the Zagora Desert?

Generally speaking, remember that Moroccans are a conservative culture . Try to dress according to their customs so as not to offend them. During excursions in the desert wear cotton or linen clothing that is breathable. It is also useful to bring hats, caps and sunglasses , as well as a scarf to protect your face.

During the night temperatures are very cold so try to pack warm clothes and socks in your suitcase. Other useful accessories are: a basic first aid kit , sunscreen, portable charger (you can find some that charge with sunlight), fresh water and a high protein snack.

Tips to save on your next trip to the Zagora Desert

• In Morocco prices are rarely fixed so on your trip you will have to put into practice your bargaining skills.
• Try to agree on cab fares in advance before getting into the vehicle. In this city they do not have a taximeter and you could end up paying more than expected if you do not negotiate the fare with the driver.
• If you are looking for cheap food in destinations like Zagora, opt for street food instead of a casual restaurant. Besides being cheaper it is usually freshly made and 100% authentic Moroccan food.
• A sleeping tour in the Moroccan desert is on the list of the most fascinating activities you could do on your visit to the Zagora desert.
• When choosing a desert tour or any other activity research in detail what is included and what is not before opting for the cheapest price on the list. On several occasions I have seen slightly more expensive tours that include really interesting add-ons such as food and transportation to the hotel so at the end of the day they end up being cheaper for the traveler.

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
