How Eating Europe Was Born

Kenny portrait

Kenny Dunn – Founder & Managing Director

After spending three years travelling around the world, Kenny returned to his hometown of Philadelphia in 2003, with an armful of stories that almost all involved food!

There was the time he cooked a fresh catch on the beach with an Indonesian fisherman. And another when he was invited for a grand family feast at a Moroccan farmhouse. Food was the gateway into each culture and sharing it with strangers had created his most unforgettable experiences.

However, it wasn’t until he moved to Rome in 2009 that Kenny really developed a passion for European cuisine. Like any expat, he received several visits from friends and family who were keen to see his new home. He’d often take his visitors to his favourite backstreet eateries, where he’d love introducing them to the people behind the food.

From Armando, the toothless gelato maker, to Flavio, the charismatic chef with a claim to the city’s best carbonara, Kenny’s guests fell in love with the characters and stories that came with each dish!

After some encouragement, he finally decided to turn his casual neighborhood stroll into an actual tour. At the time, food tours were rare and Kenny spotted a unique opportunity to give travellers a real taste of the Italian life he’d come to love!

In 2011, Eating Italy Food Tours was born!

Kenny then began traveling to other cities in Europe and meeting people who shared the same burning passion for showing curious travelers the local food, places and people in their own neighborhoods. In each city this person worked hard to create the same unforgettable food tours that Eating Italy was offering in Rome. In London, Nicole was soon introducing guests to Poppy the owner of her local “chippy.” In Prague, Robert was breaking gingerbread cookies with guests, and in Amsterdam, Dimitri was teaching people the many different ways to eat fresh herring.

Eating Italy Food Tours soon became Eating Europe. The team and the destinations continue to grow and today are sharing a taste of local life in nine cities all across Europe.

Our tour guide, Michele, was very knowledgeable, friendly and a great host. I felt like I would not have been able to get this experience had I not done it through Eating Europe, and specifically, with Michele. It exceeded my expectations. The quality of drinks, food and locations we went to were exceptional. I have already recommended this experience to my friends and family, and will plan to do this again in the future. - Andrew G.
Our tour guide was fantastic. I’m glad we did this particular tour because I wouldn’t have necessarily gone out to see this part of the city on my own and I would have been missing out on a great historical, culture rich area. - Amanda B.
Dario was excellent. I chose the tour from reviews and loved it so much. Best tour we took in Italy!!! - Nancy B.
Naseem was just fantastic. To have someone who grew up in the neighbourhood talk about Roman history and recent history while taking you to the places he played and ate gelato was a privilege – a living social historical event! Thanks so much for a truly memorable morning. - Amy B.
Valetina was a great guide! Kind and helpful, she did a great job educating us! It was great to see how close she was with all the stops we had. Would recommend to others! - Derek M.
Luca did an exceptional job with the tour, talking in detail about food, history, and culture. We went to some fantastic places — some we have already gone back to for a second visit. Thanks Luca! - James G.
Toni was the very best! She was engaging, knowledgeable and really bonded with my girls! - Jennifer H.
We had a blast walking through Trastevere with Rogelio. He knew so much cool history, the setting was beautiful and the food was delightful. - Summer K.
Luca was absolutely AMAZING! We had a whirlwind vacation with travel through London, Paris, Rome and a cruise through the islands of Greece. We saw a ton on our vacation, but everyone in our group of 4 actually rated the Trestavere Twilight food tour as #1 of all the things we did and saw over our entire trip! - Julie
Manu was an amazing guide! Very knowledgeable, friendly, funny. The food was amazing and we learned so much. The tour made a very hot day in Rome absolutely lovely. - Allison
We had a great time on the food tour. Our tour guide Luca was very informative and entertaining. The evening flew by and we were all full of good food and wine! - Shannan
Our guide Luca was outstanding. Informative and entertaining. He developed a real sense of family within our group. The food and the choice of eating establishments was wonderful! - Richard
Renee was amazing! He was fun, personable, and super knowledgeable about food and Amsterdam. The group size allowed for us to ask questions and it was not too big where we could not hear him. The shops and restaurants Renee chose were great! I totally recommend this tour. - Meghan K.
Our Tour guide was terrific and the afternoon was very informative not only in the eating experience but the local history. We enjoyed the whole afternoon. - Lynne
We had a great time and we were fortunate to have Renee all to ourselves. He was very personable and we enjoyed the food, conversation, and canal ride. We highly recommend. - Jennifer W.
What fun and so delicious! Our guide was knowledgeable and energetic. And did she ever have us full by the end of the tour. I highly recommend this outing. - Andrea B.

Eating Italy: A Walking Food Tour in Rome

Posted on Last updated: October 21, 2014

One of the biggest reasons we couldn’t wait to get to Italy was the food!

When we heard about Eating Italy Food Tours and their eating expeditions with local foodie experts, our minds and our stomachs could not pass it up.

We’d never heard of Testaccio in our reading about Rome, but as it turns out, it’s a pretty important place for food and was exactly where we were headed for our Taste of Testaccio tour. Not only is it considered the original foodie neighborhood of the city, but it’s also where Roman cuisine is said to have been born!

On the tour you have the opportunity to enjoy 12 tastings from 9 different food stops over 4 hours! From scrumptious treats at the patisserie, decadent truffle cheeses and cold cuts at the gourmet food shop, to authentic street food and, naturally, some of the best pizza and pasta you can get in the city.

Eating Italy Food Tour Rome

One of our favourite parts of the tour was visiting the Testaccio Market and having the opportunity to meet some of the stall owners, many of whom have been in this line of work all their lives and have inherited the family business. It was clear that food in Italy is more than something to fill a grumbling stomach, it’s an unrelenting passion, and a great deal of pride goes into food preparation and ensuring your customers are satisfied. We of course couldn’t be rude and sampled some of their produce too! ;)

We were fortunate to have cheese expert Lina share this picture of herself and her husband/meat extraordinaire, Enzo, on their wedding day more than 40 years ago!

If the sound of all this eating has you concerned about fitting it all in, you needn’t worry. Eating Italy have this tour wonderfully balanced with perfect portion sizes that give you a good taste without filling you up too quickly, as well as several so-called “digestion” stops, where your guide takes you to a few interesting sites around town (including Rome’s only pyramid!) while taking a break from the eating.

Photo a Day Project: Weekly Round-up August 10th 2014

Our guide Kate was so knowledgeable about Rome, Italy, food and history that the four hours flew by. We learned so many things about Italian culture that were invaluable for the rest of our time in the country. Whether you’re a big food lover or not, we’d recommend this tour just to familiarize yourself with Rome and learn how to really “do as the Romans do”. Consider the awesome tastings just another great bonus thrown in.

Of course, an Italian food tour wouldn’t be complete without a gelato stop and was the perfect way to end our eating walking expedition on a hot summer’s day. This was perhaps one of the things I was most eager to learn on this tour: how to tell the real gelato from the fake stuff, just by looking at it! This is surprisingly a very important skill to have on your Italian holiday. Did you know that 80% of gelato in Rome is fake?! Another interesting fact we learned from Kate. I’d tell you how but that would ruin the fun of discovering this on the tour for yourself!

But we will give you this little sampler of what you can expect on the Taste of Testaccio food tour on your next visit to Rome in our latest video.

Warning: Do not watch on an empty stomach.

If you’d like to “eat Italy” yourself, check out Eating Italy’s website for information on all their food tours as well as cooking classes on offer.

We’d like to thank Eating Italy for hosting us on this experience. As always, opinions are our own.

5 Things we Learned about Italy in the First 48 Hours

Sunday 8th of February 2015

[…] Whaaaat?! Yep, while it pains me to say, most of those delightful looking gelateria that catch your eye are passing off powdered gelato as the real deal. Taste a genuine, home-made gelato and it’s impossible to go back. Luckily what is possible is spotting the difference just by looking at it, and we’ll be sharing who can teach you how in an upcoming post! (Now published here). […]

This looks fabulous. There is nothing I like more than a good food tour in a new city. Love your video too. You look very contented by the end of it, Jessica, and no wonder!

Thank you! It was such a pleasure to take this tour and what better ending could there be than gelato! :)

I'd gain many pounds...and it would totally be worth it! :)

So worth it! I wish I had a bigger stomach just so I could eat more! Haha

Is It Worth Doing a Food Tour in Rome?

Creamy gelato is often included on most food tours in Rome Italy

A food tour in Rome is absolutely worth doing ! Not only does it allow you to try authentic Italian food with a local if you’re short on time, but it also gives you a better understanding of the culture and history behind each dish.

Plus, it’s an excellent way to explore different areas of the city that you may not have otherwise visited! These tours are curated to introduce you to a variety of flavors, from classic dishes to local secrets, and are well worth the time and cost investment!

What is Famous in Rome as Far as Food?

Perhaps the most celebrated is pasta carbonara, a simple yet indulgent dish featuring eggs, Pecorino Romano cheese, cured pork, and black pepper. Equally renowned are Roman pizzas, particularly Pizza Bianca—a focaccia-style pizza that’s crispy on the outside and soft in the center.

Not to be missed are the succulent Saltimbocca alla Romana, veal cutlets wrapped in prosciutto and sage, and the delectable supplì, fried rice balls oozing with mozzarella. These dishes, along with artichokes alla Romana and cacio e pepe, among others, comprise the essence of Rome’s storied gastronomy.

What are the Best Foods to Eat in Rome?

eating italian food tour

When dining in Rome, it’s essential to indulge in the city’s signature dishes to truly experience its culinary culture. Some must-eat foods include:

  • Cacio e Pepe: A minimalist yet mouthwatering pasta dish that perfectly balances the sharpness of Pecorino Romano with the bite of freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Roman Artichokes (Carciofi alla Romana): These artichokes are braised with herbs and olive oil until they are tender and packed with flavor.
  • Maritozzi: Delicately sweet buns filled with whipped cream, a classic Roman breakfast treat.
  • Gelato: No visit to Rome is complete without sampling the rich, creamy goodness of authentic Italian gelato in a myriad of flavors.
  • Tiramisu: This iconic Italian dessert, made with layer upon layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cheese, is a sweet ending to any meal.

These foods represent a small fraction of Rome’s amazing cuisine, which is exactly why a food tour that provides you the opportunity to sample a lot of dishes instead of having to pay for full plates everywhere you go is such a great deal!

What is the Best Rome Food Tour?

The best food tour in Rome is undoubtedly the Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour with Eating Europe tour. This comprehensive 4-hour tour takes you through the charming Trastevere neighborhood where you’ll get to sample local foods like pizza, pasta, cured meats, and cheese while learning about the history of each dish and the city itself.

Rated as one of the top food tours in Rome by multiple travel websites, this tour offers an intimate experience with a small group size and provides 13 food samples across 7 local destinations!

Do You Tip on Meals in Rome?

eating italian food tour

Tipping is not mandatory in Rome, nor is it expected since the waitstaff do not rely on tips as a source of their wages . However, if you receive great service, you will notice that many people will round the bill up or leave a couple of euros on the table. It’s the polite thing to do, and we always do it.

Contrary to the United States where 15-20% gratuity is often expected since waitstaff are constantly waiting on you, Italians don’t typically leave a tip since their job is complete once they’ve delivered your beverage and meal.

It’s normal to have to wave down someone to pay your bill, so keep this in mind when dining in Rome.

What Should I Bring on a Roman Food Tour?

When attending a food tour, it’s a good idea to come prepared with the following items:

  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking a lot and Rome’s streets are less-than-ideal for heels, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Sun protection: Rome can get very hot and is often sunny in the summer months, so bring along sunscreen and a hat or sunglasses.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring a new city, and many food tours will offer water, but it’s always best to bring your own refillable bottle (this LifeStraw Bottle is my favorite and always comes with me!)
  • Cash for tipping: It’s not required to tip on food tours in Rome, but if your guide provides you with a great time then having some cash on hand to show your appreciation can be a kind gesture.
  • An empty stomach: Make sure not to eat too much before the tour since you’ll want to leave room to try all the delicious dishes!

Do Rome Food Tours Include Wine Tastings?

Some of the best food tours in Rome Italy include wine tastings

Many food tours in Rome, Italy understand the importance of how a fine wine complements the culinary experience of Italian cuisine, and thus quite a few include tastings of select local wines.

However, not all tours include a wine tour as well, so if this is something you’re interested in then be sure to check out The Roman Food Tour in Trastevere with Free-Flowing Fine Wine !

How Long Are Food Tours in Rome Italy?

Most food tours in Rome last between 3-4 hours, depending on the tour you choose . Some may be longer or shorter, but this is generally enough time to experience a variety of dishes and explore different neighborhoods in the city.

Be prepared for plenty of walking and stopping at multiple restaurants, markets, and shops along the way! Overall, it’s a fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon or evening.

How Much Do Rome Food Tours Cost?

On average, Roman food tours can range from $50-$140 per person , although this varies depending on the type of tour, the number of tastings included, and any additional experiences or extras offered.

While it may seem expensive at first glance, keep in mind that a food tour typically includes multiple meals spread out over a few hours, so it’s actually a great value since you’ll get to taste between 5 to 10 different dishes that would otherwise cost between 15-30 euros each!
