How to Install Safari on Linux

Ramces Red

When you think of the major web browsers, chances are that Apple’s Safari features somewhere on your list. However, despite its popularity, Safari has never been officially released for Linux – particularly strange considering macOS and Linux both have historical ties to UNIX.

If you’re a Linux user and a web developer and need to provide support for the Safari browser, the good news is that there are some workarounds to get Safari up and running on Linux. Although you’ll be restricted to Safari 5, this version still has everything you need for surfing the Web.

There are two potential workarounds for installing Safari on Linux: using WINE (the compatibility layer, not the drink) or using WINE and PlayOnLinux , which provides a graphical user interface (UI) for WINE.

As an added bonus, you can use WINE and PlayOnLinux to install many other Windows applications beside Safari.

WINE is one of the most well-known Linux packages and is found in most Software Center/Package managers. In Ubuntu (or Ubuntu-based distro), you can install WINE with the following command:

One thing to note is that the WINE version in Ubuntu is pretty outdated. If you want to get the latest stable version of WINE, do the following:

  • Add the WINE key.
  • Add the repository.

The above command is for Ubuntu 21.10 (impish). If you are using version other than Ubuntu 21.10, change the name accordingly (like “bionic,” “xenial,” etc.)

  • Update the system:
  • Lastly, install the stable version of WINE.

WINE will now be installed. For more information, refer to our guide on installing WINE on Linux .

WINE isn’t always the most user-friendly software, so you may want to consider installing PlayOnLinux, which provides a graphical user interface for the underlying WINE code.

  • To install PlayOnLinux, use the following command:
  • You can now find PlayOnLinux in your Applications menu.
  • In the PlayOnLinux window, select “Install a program.”

While using a native Safari 5 client in Linux can be helpful for some users. This particular version of the browser can present some issues, especially if you are visiting modern websites. This is mostly because the Safari 5 browser no longer receives new updates from Apple.

As a result, using this version of Safari can result in either broken or insecure websites. For example, it is not possible to access YouTube from a native Safari 5 client.

Linux Safari Install 10 Incompatible Youtube

One way of dealing with this issue is to use a modern browser and convert it to look and feel like the Apple browser. For example, it is possible to take Firefox and theme it to look like the modern version of Safari.

  • Run the initial install script, which will prepare all the necessary files and dependencies for your Firefox theme, by running the following command:
  • Run the Firefox theme installer by typing the following:
  • Doing this will, then, automatically copy all the necessary settings and configurations for your Firefox client.

It’s important to note that the installer will not run if Firefox is currently running. Once done, however, you can reload the browser to look at your converted Firefox instance.

Is it possible to install Safari in Linux using the Mac installer?

Sadly, no. While it is possible to install DMG files in Linux, the native Safari browser for macOS is purpose built to only run for that operating system, as the browser uses Mac-specific functions which allow it to integrate well into macOS. For example, the Quick Note feature in Safari relies on external Apple programs to work properly.

I already have WINE installed. Is it alright to install PlayOnLinux on top of it?

Yes! By default, PlayOnLinux creates its own set of virtual drives where it places the custom WINE version that it uses. Because of that, it is safe to install PlayOnLinux alongside with a mainline version of WINE. For example, when you install Safari through PlayOnLinux, it creates a clean sandbox where it installs all the programs and WINE patches that it needs.

Further, this approach also means that removing a program that you previously installed through PlayOnLinux is incredibly simple: press “Right click” on the “Safari 5” entry in the main menu and select “Remove.”

Is it possible to remove the Safari theme and return Firefox to the default?

Yes! It is relatively simple to remove the Safari theme and revert your Firefox installation back to its default settings. First, go back to the White Sur directory that you extracted. From there, you then need to type the following command: ./tweaks.sh -f -r && ./install.sh -u .

Doing that will allow you to remove all the Safari-related files for Firefox as well as delete all theme files from your machine. With that done, the last thing that you need to do is to restart the browser to reload your default settings.

If you need Safari on your Linux PC, you’ll be happy to know that it is possible to install it. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how you can set up Apple Safari on Linux.

Before we begin

Apple no longer supports Safari on the Windows platform. The oldest release of the browser for Windows is version 5 from 2010. However, this version runs on Linux, and you’ll be able to run it in Wine.

However, before attempting to install it, understand that this is an older release of Safari. You may run into unique issues using Safari that cannot be foreseen.

Installing Wine on Linux

You will need to install the latest version of Wine on your Linux PC to run Safari on your system. Thankfully, Wine is widely used and available on every Linux operating system out there.

To install Wine on Linux, start by opening up a terminal window. You can open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

With the terminal app open and ready to use, Wine is ready to install. Follow the installation instructions outlined below to get the app working on your computer.

To install Wine on Ubuntu, you’ll want to use the following apt install command below.

After entering the command above, Ubuntu will ask for your password. Enter it to set up the Wine64 package on your computer.

Those looking to get Wine working on Debian 11, Debian 10, or Debian Sid should use the apt-get install command below to set up the “wine64” package.

Upon entering the command above, Debian will ask you for a password. Enter your user account password into the terminal. Then, press the Enter key to submit it and install Wine.

Arch Linux users will always have access to the latest Wine Binaries thanks to Arch’s quick updates. To install the latest version of Wine on your Arch Linux PC, use the following pacman -S command.

Once you enter the command above, Arch will ask you for a password. Enter it to install the latest release of Wine.

If you’re a Fedora Linux user, you’ll be able to get a new version of Wine working on your computer using the following dnf install command in a terminal window.

sudo dnf install wine

When the command above is entered, Fedora will ask you for a password so it can install Wine. Use the keyboard and enter your password.

Need to get the latest release of Wine working on your OpenSUSE Linux system? Enter the following zypper install command in the terminal window.

With the command entered above, OpenSUSE will ask for a password. Using the keyboard, enter your user account password to get Wine.

Start by opening up a terminal window to run Apple Safari on Linux. You can open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu.

With the terminal window open and ready to use, follow the step-by-step instructions below to run Apple Safari on your Linux PC.

Step 1: First, use the wget download command to download the Safari 5 windows installer EXE to your Linux PC. This installer EXE makes it possible to install Safari in Wine on Linux.

Step 2: After downloading the software to your computer, use the wine command to start up the installation wizard.

Note: if you have issues using the Safari EXE, you may want to run wine64 instead of the wine command below.

Step 3: With the SafariSetup.exe wizard open, you will see “Welcome to the Safari Installer”. Read the brief that the wizard shows. When you’ve finished reading it, find the “Next” button and click on it with the mouse.

Step 4: Upon selecting the “Next” button, you’ll see the Apple Safari License Agreement. Select the “I accept the terms in the license agreement,” and select the “Next” button to continue to the next page in the installer.

Step 5: Following the license agreement, you’ll see various boxes checked. If you wish for Safari to be the default browser on Linux, leave the boxes checked. Otherwise, uncheck everything.

Step 6: On the next page, you’ll need to tell the Safari wizard where to install the software. Leave it as default, or, if you’re an expert, browse for a place to install it. Then, finish the installation.

Once the installation is complete, Safari will be ready to run on Linux.

wine32 sudo apt install or (on 64-bit systems):

wine64 – sudo apt install One thing to keep in mind is that Ubuntu’s WINE version is fairly ancient. Do the following if you want the most recent stable version of WINE:

Add WINE key first.

-nc wget sudo apt-key https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key insert winehq.key Add the archive, too.

deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/eoan main, sudo apt-add-repository

The command listed above is for Ubuntu 19.10 (eoan). Change the name to reflect the Ubuntu version you are using (such as “bionic,” “xenial,” etc.)

System upgrades

You can use the following command to install PlayOnLinux:

install playonlinux with sudo PlayOnLinux is now accessible from the Applications menu.

Select Install a software from the PlayOnLinux window. Choose Install a program In the search box, type Safari. In the search box, type “Safari” Select the web browser when it displays, then click Install. Read the Disclaimer section, and then click Next if you agree (2 times). Safari is not natively available for Linux, but you can still install it by using a compatibility layer called Wine. This allows you to run Windows applications on Linux. Here’s how to install Safari on Linux with Wine:

Step 1: Download and Install Wine

The first step is to download and install Wine. In most cases, you can find Wine in the software repositories of your Linux distribution. Open up your terminal and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install wine

Step 2: Download Safari for Windows

Next, you need to download Safari for Windows from the official Apple website. Visit the official page of Apple and head for the download section. Look for the suitable download for Windows OS of Safari and download it.

Step 3: Install Safari on Linux

Once you have downloaded Safari, navigate to your downloads folder and find the Safari installation file. Right-click on it and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”. This will automatically trigger Wine to run and install Safari on your Linux machine.

Note: During the installation process, Wine might ask you to install additional Windows components. You should install them to ensure Safari runs smoothly on your Linux machine.

Step 4: Run Safari on Linux

Once you have installed Safari on Linux, you can launch it by finding it in the programs menu of Wine. Or, you can use the command line to launch Safari using the following command:

wine “C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.exe”

It’s important to note that the user experience with Safari on Linux might differ from what you are used to on a Mac or Windows. Additionally, running Safari on Linux, via Wine, can take up some resources which can affect the performance of the system.

In conclusion, installing Safari on Linux is possible via a compatibility layer called Wine. After completing the above-mentioned steps, you can access the excellent features of Safari on Linux, however, you must keep in mind that it is not an official method and that the performance may differ.

Is it possible to install Safari on Ubuntu 14.04?

I would like to debug a browser compatibility issue with Safari. I don't have a Mac and Windows. I am interested if its still possible to install Safari on Ubuntu 14.04. I've tried using Wine 1.6.2 by installing the last version of Safari that works with Windows. While it installs, it does not launch.

  • I'm afraid I haven't found anything that works reliably. I tried both @abdulla-nilam's WineTricks answer, and also PlayOnLinux. The latter gave better instructions but both ended up with the same result: An old version of Safari that crashes on half the pages I tried loading. –  Michael Scheper Commented Nov 4, 2016 at 23:16

Safari uses webkit as web browser engine. You can use epiphany-browser which also uses webkit engine for debugging and checking the compatibility:

StackOverflow has some answers but I am trying to find out if they're up-to-date. EDIT: yea, they're out of date. Safari on Windows ended when Safari 6 started. Maybe it can be done legally or ethically in virtualbox.

(The remainder is wrong if you want OSX >=6.0) Basically, install Wine and possibly playonlinux, but I don't know if you can get Safari 9. So far I just found out you can get Safari 5. Here's a page of advice without a date on it.

Maybe one of these will work! Haven't tried it yet ....

Installing Apple’s Safari Web Browser in Ubuntu Linux

While Apple may be pushing Safari on Windows , the company has historically ignored Linux users. Fortunately, thanks to WINE , which allows you to run Windows applications without installing Windows, it's not too difficult to get Safari running in Linux.

The Ubuntu Unleashed blog recently posted instructions on how to install Safari using WINE on Ubuntu , but with a few tweaks, you should be able to get it running on just about any Linux distribution. The instructions even include installing the Flash plugin for Safari in WINE.

Of course if you aren't looking for the Apple-specific front-end, WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, is also used in Konqueror. ( Update: As Douglas Greenshields points out in the comments below, WebKit is actually based on KHTML (Konqueror's web browser), and it is not technically part of Konqueror .)

However, if it's the Safari interface you're after, WINE is your answer. The only real dependency, aside from WINE, is that you install Microsoft's Core Fonts, but you'll need them for just about any application running under WINE.

I tested the install out of curiosity and it worked without a hitch. As you can see in the screenshot above, I've got the Windows version of Safari running in Ubuntu and the Flash plugin works just fine. The main menu items are a little bit off, but it's still usable and surprisingly snappy.

Safari for Linux: Install Safari with Wine

Installing Wine

While Apple hasn’t released an official version of Safari for Linux, the Windows version runs in Wine. Wine is a Windows compatibility layer that lets supported Windows applications run on Linux, and it’s constantly being updated.

First, you’ll need to install the Wine package for your Linux distribution. Use your distribution’s package manager.

On Ubuntu, click “Applications” and “Ubuntu Software Center.” Type “wine” into the search box at the top-right corner of the Ubuntu Software Center window. Click “Wine Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer,” then click “Install.” Authenticate yourself by typing your password when prompted and pressing “Enter.”

Fedora users need to click “System,” “Administration” and “Add/Remove Software.” If you’re using another Linux distribution, look under the “Programs” or “System -> Administration” menus for the software installation tool.

Installing Safari

Open Apple’s Safari for Windows Download site. Click the option for the download without Quicktime, click “Download Now,” then click “Save” in your Web browser when prompted.

Open the folder Safari was downloaded to. For example, open the default Downloads folder by clicking “Places” and “Downloads.”

Enable execution privileges for the downloaded Safari Setup program by right-clicking it, clicking “Properties,” clicking the “Permissions” tab, checking the “Allow Executing File as Program” box and clicking “Close.”

Run the Safari installer by right-clicking the “SafariSetup.exe” file and click “Run with Wine Windows Program Loader.” Wine will take longer than normal to start the first time as it creates a virtual Windows directory for you.

Install Safari using the installer just as you would in Windows. As far as Safari is concerned, it’s installing on Windows.

Using Safari

Opening Safari for Linux in Ubuntu’s Applications menu.

Open Safari on Linux by clicking “Applications,” “Wine,” “Programs” and “Safari.”

This is a great way to play with Safari and test it with your websites, but, unfortunately, you can’t yet rely on it for day-to-day Web browsing because it isn’t completely stable.

Newer versions of Wine will eventually increase Safari’s stability - hopefully. In the short term, they might even make it more unstable. Rewriting the Windows API is hard, complicated work! If you’re interested in trying a newer version of Wine on Ubuntu, Wine hosts a repository with newer beta versions of Win e . Bear in mind that these may have stability regressions in the short term. Users of other Linux distributions can check out Wine’s download site for their particular distribution.
