The cascading water of the Jeongbang Waterfall falling directly into the crystal blue sea in Jeju-do, South Korea

Luxury Jeju Island Tours made for you

Korea's favourite holiday spot.

The largest island off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, Jeju is dominated by Hallasan, the volcano from which it was formed and the highest mountain in  South Korea .

Sloping down through rich forests past villages built from black volcanic rock and the famous dol hareubang grandfather statues carved from basalt, the island’s coastline is a dramatic place of rugged cliffs, waterfalls and beaches, at its most beautiful when carpeted in wildflowers. You’ll also find some impressive temples and lava tubes in between.

Another major draw for visitors here (of which there are many, Jeju is the top honeymoon spot for newlywed Koreans and the air route between Seoul and the island is the busiest in the world) is the food. Along with fresh fish, Jeju is famous for its seafood, much of which is hand caught by the Haenyeo women who dive for clams, abalone, octopus, squid and seaweed with no breathing apparatus.

Overall experience was great, from planning, preparation and actual trip itself. It was an "extended" planning period because of covid but we were kept up to date on latest health and immigration requirements, which helped address our concerns/anxiety. Our "Cherry Blossoms" trip to Jeju, Busan and Seoul (finally, after waiting 2 years) was great. Excellent service during the trip -…

We, as a family, have been privileged to go on a number of luxury holidays to some interesting places - from Peru to Pakistan and Mongolia to Mozambique - and this trip was right up there. Thank you for making it so special. To speak candidly it was a risk to move away from the more established tour operators that…

My family and I went on a trip to Vietnam, South Korea and Indonesia. The experience was absolutely fantastic. The planning of the activities, hotels and times for rest was impeccable. My children are 8 and 10, and my mom is 63. The choice of accommodations was brilliant, each hotel was unique and could have been an attraction by itself!

It has been reported that the island gets a total of one hundred seventy-eight (178) departures on the daily. Regular direct flights to and from international cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing and Shanghai (as well as South Korea's domestic airports) and liberal visa requirements make a trip to Jeju Island easier and more accessible. The island has a 1950-meter volcano, the highest mountain in South Korea as well as the island’s highest point, with a beautiful array of flora and fauna ranging from butterflies and beetles, to the various colorful fish in its aquasphere.

6 DAYS 5 NIGHTS JEJU TOUR

Go around jeju island in six (6) days with this tour.

TOUR PACKAGE ITINERARY :

DAY ONE: ARRIVALS AND TRANSFERS

You can meet your tour guide upon your arrival at incheon airport. you can fly to jeju via a domestic flight. on arrival in jeju, your welcome is marked by a visit to the famous dragon head-shaped yongduam rock., mysterious road is a place where you can literally defy gravity. it is a part of the dokkaebi road because objects such as car tend to travel downwards on a road that is travelling upwards. this road is just actually one of those magnetic hills scattered around the world. it appears that there is a slight downhill slope that seems to be upward due to its surroundings being at a high altitude. this creates an optical illusion where objects passing through roll uphill., love land is a park that allows only those of legal age to enter. the reason for this is due to the thematic nature of the park, which is centered on sexuality and eroticism. the park is filled with sculptures and infrastructure modelled after human genitalia. students from the nearby art university created the sculptures for their class. the park opened in 2004. the park’s official site introduces the park as “a place where love oriented art and eroticism meet.”, the story behind the park is a rather quaint one. in the 1970s, jeju was a popular destination for newlywed couples. as a result, the island became a center for sex education. some employees in the hotels, according to simon winchester, would act as “professional icebreakers.” in the evenings a program featuring erotic elements would be held as entertainment to honeymooning couples., after a busy day, check in your hotel to rest., day two:   seongsan sunrise peak, visit the amazing seongsan sunrise peak after your breakfast in the hotel. seongsan sunrise peak is an archetypal tuff cone that had been formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions under the sea a thousand years ago; it is located in jeju. from the peak, you can get a dramatic view of the island. there is a paved stairway you can find by the edge; the journey to getting to the peak might be perilous, but worth it due to the view from the summit. the peak makes a good place where to get photos; from one of the nearby cones, you can take the opportunity there to watch the women divers swim from afar., seongsan sunrise peak is considered a living unesco heritage site. it is recommended that the best time to go on the challenging hike to its summit would be during the daytime, especially to see the sun rise., proceed to chongjiyeon falls and hello kitty island., the name of the falls means “sky connected with land.” rare plants like brambles and songyeopnan are aplenty in the falls. camellias and chinese lemon trees abound in the forest. the forest is designated as the natural monument no. 63. the falls and the water, designated as natural monument no. 58, also serve as a habitat for the mutae eel, which is said to glow in the night., hello kitty island is a hall themed after hello kitty. the hall features various informative exhibits like the hello kitty history hall. for those who tend to get hungry easily, you can get food at the hello kitty cafe, where you can find hello kitty on your latte – or even the shape of her head on your waffle. before leaving the premises of the hello kitty island, don’t forget to stop by the gift shop., after this activity-filled day, eat dinner and check in your hotel., day three: gyeonggi.

Jeju Island – What to expect

Jeju Island is one of the top UNESCO World Heritage attractions, thanks to its unique biosphere reserve and geographical makeup. The island’s foundation covers a lava plateau allowing you to experience a rugged volcanic landscape. The island itself is more than two million years old!

A woman picking Hallabong a fruit similar in appearance and color to an orange

You will explore a diverse landscape of alpine forest, spacious grassland, and deep blue water. This is the home to many endangered species of plants and animals, including the Steller sea lion. Our tour to Jeju Island is ideal for those looking to disconnect from city life and experience nature in its purest form.

Jeju do tour – Course Overview

Overlooking one of the picturesque Jeju-do beaches from a cafe on a clear day

Some of the highlights of our first day include exploring the famous Yongduam Rock, followed by a drive along the Mysterious Road. We’ll soak up the spectacular vistas of Mount Songak and head out to Dragon Head Coast to see the bustling Cheonjiyeon Waterfall.

Looking at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak from a distance with clear blue skies and lots of colors

The final day of our Jeju Island tour will be a bit slower-paced. We’ll visit Halim Park and Suwol Peak, after which we’ll make our way to the airport, fly you back to Seoul and conveniently deliver you to your hotel. Each day of our tour will provide the perfect balance of exciting nature activities, rest, and exploration. Have a look at our Korea tour packages for more overnight trips and choose the perfect adventure for you and your family!

Discover the legend of Yongduam Rock and see nature in motion

Jeju Island has a very unique topography. Due to its volcanic nature, there are plenty of peculiar rock formations. Yongduam Rock is the most famous of all, created by the immense force of winds and waves over thousands of years.

A view of Yongduam Rock with the sea and coastline behind

Today, the rock is a popular attraction populated by small cafes and shops. If you are lucky, while visiting Yongduam Rock you might catch a glimpse of the incredible Haenyeo women diving to collect seafood by hand – a long-standing tradition on the island!

Defy the laws of gravity at Jeju Island’s Mysterious Road

Car driving down the mysterious road on a dark and foggy day

Why is that? Scientists say that this is due to the height of the road’s surroundings, which create the illusion that the slope is rising, while the road actually goes downhill.

We’ll have the chance to see this incredible path for ourselves, although be warned – you may not believe your eyes!

Mount Songak – a panorama that will sweep you off your feet

People hiking up Mount Songaksan

From a height of 104 meters, you will be able to see the nearby islands of Marado, Hyeongjeseom, and Gapado, as well as Hallsan Mountain.

On the north-west side of the peak, discover a volcanic crater with a diameter of 500 meters and a depth of 80. The man-made caves around are reminiscent of the Japanese invasion and are still well-preserved today. As Songaksan Mountain’s shore is a vibrant fishing area, you may be able to spot saw-edged perch and black porgy.

Dragon Head Coast – the most scenic walk you will ever take

Yongmeori Coast, also known as the Dragon Head Coast, is a picturesque route that offers a front-row view of the Sa-am stacks – rock formations that have built up over millennia. The name literally translates to “dragon” (Yong) “head” (Meori). Discover gulbangs (grottos) in the shape of spacious rooms and large rocks stacked on top of each other resembling a geological layer cake.

Yongmeori’s cliffs amaze with their unassuming elegance. Observe the clear ocean water twinkle beneath your feet and breathe the fresh, salty air as you make your way across the sandstone bed.

At the foot of Yongmeori Coast, you’ll find the Hamel Monument – a memorial dedicated to the Dutch explorer Hendrick Hamel that stands to affirm the diplomatic ties between South Korea and the Netherlands.

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall – a slice of paradise

Beautiful Cheonjiyeon Waterfall in Jeju-do, Korea with beautiful green foliage surrounding it

At night, as the lights come on, the waterfall transforms into an exquisite canvas of color, creating a romantic atmosphere. Here, you will be able to see marble-colored mootae eel and take stunning photos!

Jeju Horse Pasture – a 600 years old tradition

Watching horses roam free at Jeju Island Pastureland

Perhaps one of the most interesting facts about Jeju Horse Pastureland is that it belongs to the Cultural Heritage Administration which means it is state-owned. The reason behind this is that there are 130 horses residing here that are in need of special care and attention.

Travel 500 years back in time at the quaint Seongeup Folk Village

A traditional style house at the 500 year old Seongeup Folk Village with bright green trees and hanging fruit in the background

Located at the foothills of Mount Halla, Seongeup Folk Village is a small town that still holds traditional houses, Confucian temples, schools, statues, and governmental institutions dating back to 1410.

Experience first-hand the magic of the local cultural heritage through plays, food, and crafts!

Traditional houses at a folk village on Jeju Island-folk-villag

The unique aspect of this village is that it isn’t a replica. Each thatched-roof stone house and alley has been carefully preserved to deliver the utmost authentic experience to you. On our tour, we will roam around and explore the premises, marveling at the fortress ruins and listening to the local dialect.

Seongsan Sunrise Peak – greet the sun on top of the world

Looking at Seongsan Ilchulbong also known as sunrise peak on Jeju Island

As if bursting out of the ocean floor, its base resembles a crown because of its jagged rocks. As the name suggests, this is the best spot on Jeju Island to welcome the sunrise, as it faces east.

Make sure to have your camera charged as you’d surely want to capture this view!

Explore the inside of a lava tube at Manjanggul Cave

Looking down the brightly lit tunnel inside Manjanggul Cave

A cavern formed due to a volcanic eruption over 200,000 years ago, the cave is truly fascinating with its tranquility and subtle colors.

One of the highlights on our Jeju Island tour, traversing the cave is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience! We will explore the one kilometer that is the designated tour area and see stalactite, stalagmite, and various corals.

Recharge your batteries at Saryeoni Forest

Tranquil Saryeoni Forest Path on a misty day with bright green colors peaking through the trees

As we make our way through the beautiful nature trails, you will feel your stress slowly dissipate, replaced by the feeling of awe! This is the perfect way to go back to the basics – fresh air, beautiful surroundings, and wonderful company.

Peacful Saryeoni Forest with many tall trees and green leaves

Choose your own adventure at Halim park

At 1,000 square meters, Halim park has something for everyone! Abundant in gardens that can be enjoyed year-round, the park provides the perfect opportunity to discover exotic plants you’ve never seen before!

Go for a walk down Palm Tree Road, and marvel at the tall, skinny palm trees which are the absolute best background for unique photos! Take a stroll through the Bonsai Garden and check out the intricate flower designs.

Make sure to pop into Hyeopjaegul and Ssangyonggul Caves – the only two-dimensional caves on the planet! Inside, you will see features of both lava and limestone caves which is a truly unique combination.

If you’re enjoying our Jeju Island tour with your children, you’re in luck! The park has a children’s amusement park where your kids can play their hearts out!

An observation deck with a pair of high-powered binoculars on the peak of one of Jeju's mountains

Riddled with lookouts and observation decks, the peak is a part of the island’s volcanic ring formed thousands of years ago. You can still see the layers of hardened lava that have persisted through millenia! A much less crowded spot, the peak is a fantastic place to spend a quiet moment meditating or take a lovely family portrait!

If nature is what fills your soul, then seize the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful islands in the world! On Korea’s Jeju Island, we journeyed into the past. We found much more.

A writer and her husband encounter complex history, lush nature, and reflective moments at one of the country’s premier destinations..

The sun shines through the clouds at Sangumburi Crater, a popular tourist site on Jeju Island.

A s our flight lands on the beautiful South Korean island of Jeju, I touch my husband’s hand, knowing how much this means to him.He first came here in 1986 to photograph the island for the country’s tourism board. A favored place among honeymooners — and just over an hour by plane from Seoul — Jeju’s subtropical climate, crystal clear waters, volcanic landscape, and seafood-forward cuisine entice visitors to its shores.

We have taken an Eastar Jet flight from Gimpo International Airport to reach this jewel off the southern coast of the peninsula. When my husband, Kim Newton, first visited, the tourist board was keen to drum up the island’s appeal to foreigners and highlight a new hotel that was just opening.

Today, Jeju is a premier tourist destination in South Korea. For New Englanders, it’s far-flung but accessible: flight options include a Korean Air non-stop route from Boston to Seoul, though you’ll need a separate connection to reach Jeju. For us, it’s a place entwined with Kim’s personal history.

Kim’s arrival here decades ago from Japan, where he was based as a freelance photojournalist, set him on a new path. After completing his work on the island, he was quickly drawn to South Korea’s democracy movement , which was fighting to establish free elections and end the country’s authoritarian rule.

On the streets of Seoul, he captured a particularly touching photograph of university protesters mourning their fellow student Lee Han-yeol, who died after being struck in the head by a police tear-gas canister. Kim’s photo seemed to encapsulate the deep feelings of the South Korean public. Published in U.S. News & World Report, it was seen around the world.

Kim’s time in the country left a deep impression on him. And now, nearly four decades later, he is ready to experience Jeju all over again.

Kim Newton’s 1987 photograph of South Korean students mourning the death of Lee Han-yeol.

We are here at the invitation of filmmaker Kim Man-jin, who we met in 2017 when he asked my husband to appear in a documentary about Lee’s death, in which the photograph figured heavily. It was the beginning of a deep friendship.

Man-jin has curated a three-day trip for us, one that he hopes will deepen our understanding of the island’s rich — and painful — history. We will be joined by a photographer named Lee Soon-koo, who helped film the documentary and will also be shooting our latest travels, as well as a mountaineering expert who will guide us on our walks.

After picking up our rental car (both Hertz and Avis have kiosks on Jeju), we head out into the mild autumn weather.

Our host tells us that we aren’t here, this time, to trek up South Korea’s tallest mountain, Hallasan (6,388 feet), or walk any of the Jeju Olle Trail , the island’s network of stunning footpaths. We will walk some of the smaller cones and craters to acquaint ourselves with Jeju’s terrain. And, Man-jin adds, our first stop is the most essential: We need to know what happened here.

As we arrive at the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park , crows flying overhead squawk in greeting. We learn that a grim history followed the Korean Peninsula’s liberation from Japanese occupation in 1945. The park’s name references the date of a civilian uprising on the island and the subsequent crackdown by South Korean authorities in which tens of thousands were killed.

jeju island travel agency

Exhibits honor the Jeju residents who lost their lives during the massacre. It isn’t pleasant to take in, but the peace park’s museum is laid out beautifully and includes art made by locals. Watching school groups playing between the various exhibits feels like a positive reference to South Korea’s mostly peaceful here and now.

A stop for some noodle soup made with Jeju pork (the island is famous for its native pigs), as well as some refreshing local tangerines, refuels us for a pleasant walk at the Jeju Stone Park . I am intrigued by the huge, mysterious volcanic statues here known as “stone grandfathers.” A symbol of Jeju, they are said to guard against evil spirits, but to me their faces are humorous and comforting.

A museum here teaches visitors about Jeju’s formation, in which volcanic activity figures heavily. The “sky pond” atop the museum is mesmerizing; rubber boots are placed at the edge, an invitation for visitors to wade in.

Our next stop is Sangumburi Crater , an impressive site awash in green and surrounded by fields of waving golden reeds. With the day’s dramatic skies, I can see why this atmospheric location has been used as a backdrop in Korean films and television shows. As I look over the crater, I pause for a private moment to honor and thank my late mother, who had Jeju on her lengthy list of must-visit places.

A seafood feast at Unjeongine restaurant.

Our first dinner as a group is at Unjeongine , a restaurant specializing in seafood, particularly the aromatic, delicate cutlassfish. Man-jin explains that the long, thin fish is caught in the waters near Jeju and quite popular among Koreans. He says he especially likes it braised spicy-style with red pepper, but the version we have here is grilled, only mildly spicy. (The restaurant’s owner, a good friend of Man-jin’s, reaches in to cut the bone out of the fish for me.)

Rice comes served in a heavy stone pot and topped with abalone, which infuses a deep umami flavor. A soup made with sea urchin and seaweed reminds us that the crystal-clear sea is very close.

Man-jin has arranged for us to stay in a villa, but there is no shortage of accommodations on the island.

Hotels, including the newly launched Grand Hyatt Jeju (from $207), range in price and look to appeal to all kinds of visitor budgets and personal styles. Podo Hotel, an exquisite boutique offering designed by renowned Korean architect Itami Jun, offers guests the opportunity to soak in aragonite spring water in a private hot tub located in one’s own bathroom (from $336). I put that one in my back pocket for future visits. Meanwhile, the affordable O2 Heal Resort (from $53) tempts beachgoers with its waterfront location.

The next day, we’re off to Jeju’s Biyang Island, off its northwest coast. We hope to see some haenyeo, the women divers who for generations have made a living free-diving into the ocean’s depths for seafood. In 2016, UNESCO recognized haenyeo on its list of “intangible cultural heritage of humanity.”

Known for its fishing industry, Biyang is easy to get to by ferry from Hallim Port (tickets can be purchased from ferry companies for around $10, roundtrip). We walk the perimeter of the volcanic island in an hour, but skip the tougher walk up to the peak. A paved walkway around the island makes it possible to bike and there are places to sit along the way. The volcanic rock shoreline is full of interesting tidal pools. The photographers in our group are in their element.

A Haenyeo, sea women, diver swims through the waters off Biyang Island.

I spot the distinctive floats of the women divers, which sit on the water’s surface as they dive for their catch. But they are far out, near an outcrop of volcanic rocks protruding from the sea. Nope, we are not going to be able to watch them up close, but just seeing their heads reemerge from the depths is inspiring.

We have plenty of time before the next ferry to enjoy a local delicacy, haemul pajeon, a seafood pancake, at a tiny restaurant. It is simply the most delicious thing I have eaten on this trip — and that is saying a lot. The men begin tucking into little metal cups of makgeolli, Korean rice wine. OK, it isn’t 5 p.m. yet, but tradition is tradition. I join them for a taste.

Back on Jeju, Man-Jin brings us to the Kim Tschang-Yeul Art Museum , named for the deceased artist whose modernist art, in this contemplative space, gives us a moment to breathe. His famous “Water Drops” series seemingly encapsulates centuries of Korean sorrow, and most certainly, some of his own. The “Phenomenon” series is colorful, meditative, and the perfect end to a busy day.

The path around Biyang Island.

Our final day has come too soon, and Man-jin says he has something special in store for us, in addition to our final dinner. Arriving at a big parking lot, I wonder what he has planned. And then I see the tickets he hands us, for Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls .

From a tall forest in a gorge, a stream flows toward the ocean. Along a 1-mile loop, we head toward the sound of the waterfall, stopping to observe the mystical-looking cranes sitting on the ponds. After rambling along a short path, we reach the stunning fall and see why its name translates to “where heaven meets earth.” We take turns with rowdy school groups posing for photos, a misty spray giving us a feeling of fun and well-being.

We make a quick stop at the shanty house and gallery of artist Lee Jung-seob in the city of Seogwipo, where he lived in 1951. It was a productive period for him, but this gallery holds only a few of his precious Fauvist-inspired works. Man-jin explains that after the artist’s death, his paintings were highly sought after, including by the country’s museum and wealthy private collectors.

Enjoying the fine view from the gallery’s rooftop, the moment seems poignant as our journey with Man-jin winds down. He tells us that he brought us here because, despite harsh living conditions, Lee Jung-seob never gave up hope for art. This seems like a message for us and our time.

Volcanic rocks along Hyeopjae Beach give way to a view of Biyang Island.

High winds have prevented us from walking up Saebyeol Oreum, a volcanic cone, earlier today. Man-jin was disappointed for us, knowing what a special vista it yields to those who do manage to climb it. It was the first time we all felt a hint of coolness in the autumn air.

We take a sunset walk on Hyeopjae Beach in the coastal town of Hallim. From the beach, we can see Biyang’s pristine, rocky coastline. The photographers in our group chase the juicy light with their cameras. Everything looks so beautiful, and we feel so grateful for our time together.

Our final dinner is at Jeju Island Haenyeo Three Sisters (275 Hallimhaean-ro, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si), a restaurant overlooking the ocean. It is run by a third generation of women divers, so I finally get my chance to meet some of these incredible haenyeo, who seem to hold together the soul of Jeju through their sustainable fishing practices. We feast again on cutlassfish, as well as sumptuous fresh shrimp.

As the evening ends, Kim and I begin to sense that we will someday return to this island. During our brief visit, Man-jin has broadened our understanding of Korean history and deepened our connection with the culture and terrain of South Korea’s jewel, the soulful Jeju. And that is worth revisiting.
