  • Trivia Playwright R.C. Sherriff had seen first-hand the effect of years of war on his friends and knew the fear and terror of waiting for an impending attack, waiting for his journey's end. The characters in the play are a reflection of the men Sherriff had served with in the 9th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.
  • Goofs A common misconception is the myth about having your chinstrap unbuckled. It is mainly an American thing that was spread in WW2. Fact is, if the concussion was strong enough to hurt your neck or face because your chinstrap was buckled, the force of the same concussion would more than likely kill you. Having your strap undone just meant you would spend a lot of time holding your helmet on while moving fast.

I wouldn’t have thought it was possible to make a movie that takes place mostly in a World War I trench and dugout could hold my attention as well as Journey’s End did. Except perhaps for the excesses of Captain Stanhope’s temper and demeanor, the ensemble cast does well with the realistic dialogue.

There is an element of an ominous Greek tragedy taking place, and a couple of developments I saw coming a mile off, but that didn’t detract from my appreciation of the story and how it was told. The knowledge of the attack that was due reminded me of Hitchcock’s comment that suspense wasn’t havin... read the rest.

Journey’s End

journey's end uk

An intelligent, meticulously crafted drama about British soldiers in the trenches of World War I, “Journey’s End” is the latest cinematic rendition of a play by a war veteran, R.C. Sheriff, which premiered in England in 1928 with Laurence Olivier in a lead role. While the play was a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and has proved an admirably durable theatrical staple (I saw the hit Broadway revival of 2007), one might wonder why it would be made into a movie in the present day.

An obvious one-word answer: “ Dunkirk .” Although they concern different wars, the two movies plumb the innate drama, tedium and terror of soldiers on foreign soil bracing for an onslaught by overwhelming enemy forces. Intimate and verbal, though, Saul Dibb ’s film provides a satisfying antithesis to Christopher Nolan ’s macrocosmic, hyper-sensory view of war: it gives close and sustained attention to a handful of soldiers facing both an implacable foe and their own mortality.

Since its debut, Sheriff’s play has been praised for its precise, flavorful realism and avoidance of cliches and rhetoric. Unlike many literary and cinematic treatments that would come later, it’s neither staunchly “patriotic” nor polemically “anti-war.” Leaving aside the war’s political causes (aside from one character’s statement that it should never have happened), it focuses squarely on the certain individuals and their ways of dealing with a situation of impending catastrophe.

Simon Reade ’s script for the film preserves the play’s virtues while opening its action outward in appropriate and judicious ways: While most of the drama remains in the bunkers of the British forces, when the soldiers leap out of the trenches onto the battlefield, we see that, too.

The tale takes place in the spring of 1918 near St. Quentin, France. The war has already dragged out for nearly four years, with millions killed; it will grind on for more than a half-year longer, snuffing out countless lives as it does. There is, in other words, nothing either strategically or historically significant about the episode we witness; it’s just another horror in a seemingly endless succession of them.

The film escorts us into the battle zone following fresh-faced teenaged Second Lieutenant Raleigh ( Asa Butterfield ), who could have done his service in a safer place but instead has gone to some trouble to get assigned to the command of Captain Stanhope ( Sam Claflin ). Before the war, Stanhope was a senior boy at Raleigh’s school and enamored of his sister; the three spent holidays happily wandering England’s countryside, the younger man recalls.

The early scene where Raleigh encounters Stanhope for the first time in the unit’s underground HQ is one of the film’s most memorable. Instead of the warm welcome he expected from his admired older pal, Raleigh finds a changed man. Though respected by his soldiers, Stanhope is a stiff and troubled officer and hardcore alcoholic. Naturally he doesn’t like Raleigh seeing him like this, and fears the reports he might send his sister.

Stanhope (the role that launched Olivier) is the pivotal figure in this drama. The other main character, gentlemanly, bookish Lieutenant Osborne ( Paul Bettany ), has joined the unit just recently but seems to have already formed a solid bond with Stanhope, who obviously needs his steadying, sane friendship.

A side note: The first film version of “Journey’s End” was directed in 1930 by James Whale , who would direct “Frankenstein” the following year and whose troubled psychic life as a gay WWI veteran is the subject of Bill Condon ’s “ Gods and Monsters .” While rights issues have kept Whale’s “Journey’s End” long out of circulation, a friend who’s seen it told me it’s rife with homosexual subtext. Apart perhaps from a poignant scene where a drunken Stanhope implores Osborne to tuck him into bed, that’s not the case here.

Instead, the drama describes the tensions, anxieties and sustaining camaraderie that unite these men and their fellows—including stalwart cook Mason ( Toby Jones ) and battle-hardened Trotter ( Stephen Graham ) and Hibbert ( Tom Sturridge )—as they begin a week when they’ve learned a massive German offensive is expected to begin. All know that they will be neither be evacuated nor reinforced. They are simply sacrificial lambs of the most basic strategic sort, their deaths meant only to momentarily slow the advancing enemy.

A crucial turn at the film’s dramatic apex comes when the Brits’ commanders send down an order that the unit mount a party of two officers and ten men to dash across no-man’s-land in the face of enemy fire, grab any German soldier they can, and bring him back in hopes of extracting intelligence about the upcoming attack. Raleigh and Osborne are the officers chosen for the detail. The mission is almost assuredly suicidal, just as it is inevitably futile, since it can do little or nothing to affect the impending slaughter.

Dibbs does a fine job bringing a nuanced, realistic visual style to this venerable tale of war’s cruel and colossal wastes, and his actors are all first-rate, with Bettany a special stand-out. But though it proves the timelessness of Sheriff’s drama, the film doesn’t make a particularly strong case for why, “Dunkirk” apart, it should be considered more-than-usually relevant today.

March, 1918. C-company arrives to take its turn in the front-line trenches in northern France led by the war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin). A German offensive is imminent, and the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and their past lives. Stanhope, meanwhile, soaks his fear in whisky, unable to deal with his dread of the inevitable. A young new officer, Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), has just arrived, fresh out of training and abuzz with the excitement of his first real posting – not least because he is to serve under Stanhope, his former school house monitor and the object of his sister’s affections. Each man is trapped, the days ticking by, the tension rising and the attack drawing ever closer…

Journey’s End: Remembering the First World War

At times of great social upheaval, the arts help society understand events, deal with complex emotions and recover from collective trauma. As we enter the final year of commemorations marking 100 years since the end of the First World, the conflict continues to have a significant presence on the UK stage. Recent years have seen revivals of productions such as Birdsong and War Horse and new works including Balletboyz’s Young Men .  Journey’s End is one of the most commonly revived plays of the First World War and will grace the silver screen in 2017.

journey's end uk

Written by R C Sherriff in 1927, Journey’s End draws on the playwright’s experience of combat in the First World War.  Set in an officers’ dugout over a period of four days in 1918, it is a story of comradeship, fear and heroism.

At first, Sherriff struggled to secure a West End performance of the play with many potential producers concerned that audiences would not want to watch a production about war, not least one without a leading lady or any female characters. After much consideration, The Incorporated Stage Society, a private members society that mounted performances of new and experimental work, agreed to include two semi-staged performances of the play in its Winter programme.

journey's end uk

Opening at the Apollo Theatre on 9 th December 1928 and starring a 21-year-old Laurence Olivier as Captain Stanhope, the play proved to be a critical success.  Reviews commended Sherriff’s unromanticised portrayal of the realities of war and its emotional power noting that the play was worthy of a longer public run.

In January 1929 the play transferred to the Savoy Theatre under producer Maurice Browne.  Sherriff was keen to use the original cast from the Stage Society performances but Olivier was already committed to star in a production of Beau Geste and so Colin Clive took over the role.  The play was warmly received by audiences with Winston Churchill pronouncing it “brilliant”. Standing ovations met the cast on opening night and demand for tickets resulted in the addition of three matinee performances a week.  The BBC broadcast a wireless version on Armistice night 1929 and at a special performance for 320 Victoria Cross holders, Sherriff was applauded for a number of minutes.

journey's end uk

Journey’s End is without doubt one of the greatest plays exploring the First World War with a poignant anti-war message.  However, its anti-war message is complex.  Histories of the war written in the 1960s present the British commanders as foolish men, far from the front line who needlessly sacrificed the lives of brave men in military blunders, and this idea pervades in the anti-war sentiments presented in Theatre Workshop’s Oh! What a Lovely War! and television’s Blackadder Goes Forth .  Ultimately, it was Sherriff’s intention to produce a play which paid tribute to his brothers-in-arms and the virtues of duty, perseverance and comradeship which he experienced on the Western Front.

Whilst the war in Journey’s End reveals the tragedy of conflict for both sides, the play’s narrative reminds audiences that the deaths were not without purpose.  For audiences in 1929, the Great War was not only in living memory, but its legacy was still visible with many families mourning the loss of loved ones and dealing with both the mental and physical wounds of conflict.  For inter-war audiences, Journey’s End offered an act of remembrance where those left behind could commemorate the sacrifice of husbands, fathers, sons and comrades and look forward to a future of peace.  As the Manchester Guardian printed in its 1928 review “ Journey’s End should become an official play of all the peace societies in England.  It is worth many million pamphlets.”

journey's end uk

The powerful anti-war message of Journey’s End still resonates with modern audiences in a time when conflict shows no sign of abating. David Grindley’s 2004 production at the Comedy Theatre, London juxtaposed the play’s strain of dark humour with heart-breaking tragedy.  75 years after the play opened at the Savoy Theatre, reviews of Grindley’s production note the lasting power of the piece, the impact of the intimate setting and the crafting of complicated, recognisable characters.  Rather than concluding with a traditional curtain call, the production ended with the cast standing silently before a memorial inscribed with the names of the fallen, encouraging the audience to not only congratulate the cast, but to remember the sacrifice of the brave, ordinary heroes of the First World War.

Review: ‘Journey’s End’ Returns a Play About World War I to the Screen

  • Share full article

journey's end uk

By Ben Kenigsberg

  • March 15, 2018

The World War I drama “Journey’s End” is an old-fashioned movie from a well-worn source, the play by R.C. Sherriff, who fought in the war himself. The first movie version , directed by James Whale with Colin Clive, opened in 1930, a year before their immortal work in “Frankenstein.” The new film’s air of stodgy nobility resembles that of “The Four Feathers” (1939), one of many movies for which Mr. Sherriff wrote the screenplay.

The scene is 1918 in the north of France. British units take turns rotating into the front lines, where a German attack is imminent. A newcomer, Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), has pushed to serve under Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin), his sister’s sweetheart, danger notwithstanding. Osborne (Paul Bettany), a father figure in the company who insists that the men call him “uncle,” warns Raleigh that he’ll find the shell-shocked Stanhope changed.

Video player loading

If you felt “Dunkirk” lacked a sufficient human dimension, this slightly monotonous film puts that up front, as the troops wait in suspense, banter with the cook (Toby Jones) and plot strategy. The director, Saul Dibb, alternately embraces and hedges against the staginess, with sweeping camera movements through the trenches indebted to Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths of Glory.”

Yet early screen depictions of World War I, like “The Big Parade” and “All Quiet on the Western Front,” show more passion and visual invention. A rattling sound design and the cinematographer Laurie Rose’s excellent use of low light aren’t enough to make the experience immediate.

Rated R. Battle scars. Running time: 1 hour 47 minutes.

Product description

Based on RC Sherriff's play and novel of the same name JOURNEY'S END is set in March 1918 as C-Company, led by a war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin) arrives in northern France to take its turn in the front-line trenches. Told that a German offensive is imminent Stanhope drowns his fears in whisky whilst the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) attempt to distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and life before war. They are joined by Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), a young new officer fresh out of training excited about his first real posting, and a chance to serve under Stanhope. Raleigh's naivety serves as a stark contrast to the other men's impending fear as the tension rises and the attack draws ever closer.

INTRODUCTION

Journey's End was released 2nd February 2018 by Lionsgate in the UK and

16 March 2018 by Good Deed in the US and by Icon Film in Australia

on 8 November 2018.

Fluidity Films is working with and supporting Combat Stress, the charity

that cares for veterans suffering from PTSD - our hero Stanhope suffers

from (undiagnosed) PTSD or 'shell shock'.

It was written by war veteran RC Sherriff in 1928, ten years after the Armistice at a time when public opinion was daring to question the purpose of the Great War. He had caught the mood of the nation. Journey’s End opened in the West End with Laurence Olivier playing Stanhope and it continued to play to packed houses for years afterwards.

Sherriff never claimed his play to be anti-war, saying that he simply wrote what he knew and had experienced in the trenches. Whatever the sentiment, Sherriff had written a classic – a drama that was destined to change his life and propel him to Hollywood (where he wrote scripts for films such as The Dambusters, The Four Feathers, The Invisible Man and Goodbye Mr Chips).

(spoiler alert)

18.March 1918

Jimmy Raleigh has left Barford School to join up. He is desperate to join his hero Stanhope's ‘C’ Company. On his journey to the Front Line he pulls a favour from his uncle who is a General in charge of logistics. What he doesn’t realise is that Stanhope’s Company is directly in the path of the impending and massive German attack.

Captain Stanhope's men must take over the line of trenches from Captain Hardy's company. They will be in the line for six days and nights and everyone knows the Germans are planning a big push.

Stanhope is famous for his whisky-drinking ability. The stress of almost continuous action is becoming increasingly apparent to everyone in the company – and in the wider army. Alcohol is now the only thing enabling Stanhope to deal with the senselessness of war.

His fellow officers are drawn from a broad base. His key ally is Lieutenant Osborne, nicknamed Uncle, a middle-aged schoolmaster who loves Stanhope like a son and on whom Stanhope increasingly relies to get him through each day.

Second Lieutenant Trotter is a big, homely man with a sense of humour, no-nonsense, who has come up through the ranks and who readily talks about his wife, his life at home - anything but the war.

Also in the dugout is 2nd Lt. Hibbert. Like Stanhope, Hibbert is failing to live with the stress which he claims (to Stanhope's disbelief and disgust) is responsible for his neuralgia. Stanhope is appalled by Hibbert's obvious cowardice in front of the men and is determined to prevent him going sick and absenting himself from the Line.

The officers and their dugout is looked after by Mason, their soldier cook. He is a man determined to stay on the right side of everyone, especially Stanhope, if it means not being in the trenches with the other soldiers.

Raleigh arrives into this increasingly war-weary and disorientated world: a world full of the stench of death emanating from No-Man's-Land; of wet and mud and cold; of men living like animals, where life is boxed in by trenches and dugouts and saps - where the night sky is lit up by Very lights and the shriek and spit of random shells.

Raleigh's arrival horrifies Stanhope. He is livid and confused. Raleigh's fresh face reminds him of Margaret, Raleigh's sister, to whom he almost declared his undying love moments before he left for the Front. Like everything connected to him, Stanhope's relationship with her is now disintegrating.

Stanhope is immediately convinced that Raleigh will reveal to Margaret that he is more of a drunk than a hero, exposing his secret.

Osborne does his best to tell him he is wrong about Raleigh, but Stanhope's whisky-fuelled paranoia drives him to confront Raleigh, demanding to read his letter home, convinced Raleigh is bad-mouthing him to Margaret.

Raleigh is bewildered by Stanhope's behaviour. The letter reveals the exact opposite, as Osborne has foretold. But there is little time to clear the tension because the Colonel orders a raid on the German line. Raleigh and Osborne are selected to lead the raid to capture a German soldier for questioning about the impending advance.

Stanhope tries in vain to prevent the raid happening. Osborne has a premonition of what might be coming, but as a good soldier (and determined to look after Raleigh) he accepts his fate.

Raleigh returns from the raid with a captured German soldier, to the Colonel's delight. But Osborne is killed. Stanhope's bitterness spews forth as the Colonel comes to congratulate them on a successful mission.

Tradition dictates that the team celebrate Raleigh’s success with a champagne-fuelled party in the dug-out – but Raleigh cannot bear it, preferring to stay up in the trenches with the soldiers as the horror of Osborne’s death hits home.

Hibbert spends the evening telling ribald stories of his sexual exploits back home, to Stanhope’s growing annoyance. He is furious with Raleigh too, for staying with the men rather than joining the officers. He orders Raleigh to take part, but he won’t, accusing Stanhope of not caring about Osborne.

At this Stanhope finally cracks, sobbing into Raleigh’s arms that Osborne was the only man who understood him. He eventually pulls himself together, dismissing a bewildered Raleigh to the subaltern’s dugout.

At dawn the next morning the long-feared German assault begins. The officers all depart the dugout, preparing for battle, the strictures of the night seemingly forgotten.

Raleigh is in the trenches as the German shelling intensifies. He is hit and badly wounded. Stanhope has him taken back to the dugout where he is left alone to gently tend to his childhood school-friend, cradling the dying Raleigh in his arms. Finally we see the depth of their friendship as the war screams outside destroying all of ‘C’ Company in its path.

Later that morning, at Raleigh’s family home back in rural Hampshire, Margaret opens the door to the postman - she is terrified at what news he might bring. But it is not a telegram but the letter from her brother, telling her how much the men love Captain Stanhope and how very proud he is to be able to call him his friend.

Kirk and Beth talk in the pub in Corrie

It is truly the end of an era on the cobbles, as one of Coronation Street’s most beloved couples has split – and seemingly for good this time.

Beth Sutherland ( Lisa George ) has been forced to call time on her 11-year relationship with Kirk Sutherland (Andy Whyment), after being blackmailed by Kit Green ( Jacob Roberts ).

Wednesday’s episode of the ITV soap saw Beth turn down a proposal from her long-standing partner, ahead of the character’s exit scenes later this week .

As fans know, Beth has found herself on the wrong side of corrupt copper Kit after capturing video footage him in cahoots with the shady Sid, who she had been supplying counterfeit goods to.

As she has attempted to bribe him to buy her silence, sought to beat her at her own game, uncovering Beth’s police officer son Craig Tinker’s (Colson Smith) role in covering up the death in Faye Windass’ (Ellie Leach) hit and run back in 2021.

In scenes that aired on Wednesday, Kit threatened to ruin Craig’s career by exposing the cover-up to his bosses if Beth was to do anything with the video of him.

Kit stands over Beth in the cafe in Coronation Street

However, he took his blackmail one step further after spotting Beth having a tearful conversation with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).

Deciding she was too much of a loose cannon to have around, Kit changed his terms and told her she now had to leave Weatherfield if she wanted to protect Craig.

As she prepared to say her goodbyes, Beth met with Kirk in the Rovers, apologising for her counterfeit goods scheme.

Believing they were back on, Kirk then popped the question – but was left devastated when Beth rejected him, lying that she had to leave town to start a new job at a factory in Norwich.

Created by Tony Warren, the series was first broadcast on December 9th, 1960, and was produced by ITV Granada.

With actress Lisa George having now confirmed long-standing rumours she is leaving Coronation Street after 13 years in the role of Beth, it looks like it really is over for her and Kirk this time.

Speaking about her exit on Wednesday’s episode of This Morning, Lisa said: ‘It’s just strange. I don’t think it’s sunken in yet.

‘I don’t think it will until I’m not on screen anymore. Friday will be my last scenes, and then I think it will start to sink in.’

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo now turns attention to next year and its 75th Anniversary with tickets on sale now.

journey's end uk

Following an odyssey of awe-inspiring performances featuring acts from across the globe, this years’ Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has officially come to an end.

The Edinburgh Castle’s hallowed Esplanade hosted over 800 performers, wowing packed crowds night after night, and with its increased capacity, the Tattoo hit an impressive 96% attendance cross the 26 Shows performed.

The third, and final instalment, of Creative Director Michael Brathwaite’s tenure with the Tattoo, Journeys capped off the successes of Voices and Stories . Framed by a time in which togetherness is as important as it has ever been, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, connected audiences, taking them on a voyage of shared histories and cultures from across the world.

In a dazzling display of lights, dance, music, colour and precision, the Show merged the traditional elements the Tattoo is known and loved for, with modern twists and fresh, creative elements. All brought to life by the wonderfully varied cast from the USA, India, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, and homegrown acts from around the UK.

With a host of offerings, packages, and experiences, Tattoo fans enjoyed the show in myriad ways, including the 10-year anniversary of our partnership with Contini – hosts of our Cannonball hospitality package. The Tattoo also proudly hosted Presenting Partner, Innis & Gunn and Official Vehicle Partner, John Clark Motor Group.

As one fantastic journey ends, another begins, with the Tattoo prepared to celebrate its 75th anniversary next year under the direction of new Creative Director, Alan Lane. The upcoming year promises to be filled with excitement and spectacular performances, with tickets on sale now.

Jason Barrett, Chief Operating Officer of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, said:

This year’s Tattoo had been teed up by two phenomenal performances in Voices and Stories , setting the bar exceedingly high. However, between the incredible cast, team and all those who came out to see the Show, Journeys exceeded all our expectations. This was a spectacle that will not just go down as a tremendous performance of the Tattoo, but truly one fitting of the title as one of the greatest shows on earth, and for that, we couldn’t be prouder.

But as the 74th year of the Tattoo comes to a close and we say a fond farewell to our Creative Director Michael Braithwaite, we look ahead excitedly as Alan Lane takes up the role and takes us to even more dynamic and immersive levels.

As we celebrate our 75th anniversary and a raft of exciting growth plans, it’s truly set to be a phenomenal year, and I’d urge fans to snap up tickets now to come and enjoy the magic of it all with us.

Next year, the Tattoo Show will run from 1-23 August 2025, with further updates to come across the Tattoo website and social channels.

Tickets are on sale now for the 2025 performance and can be purchased online or on the phone on 0131 225 1188.
