Best Time to Visit Kashmir

When is the best time to visit Kashmir? There is actually no straight answer to this question because it will depend on what kind of trip you were looking forward to.

If you want to see snow, January and February are ideal times. If you want to see lush green views, September will be the best time. For a honeymoon trip, I will recommend April and September.

If you want to see flowers and the Tulip Garden, you should plan for April. If you want to see Apple orchards, August and September is the best time to go.

For photography, a trip in the post-monsoon season will be best. For budget travelers, August and November are good times to go.

Mobile Network and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network in Kashmir but Airtel is better in terms of the quality of the network. Jio works decently well but the services of Vodafone and Idea are not that great.

The important thing that you should know is that only postpaid connections work in the valley. Irrespective of which network you were on, your phone will be dead as soon as you enter Kashmir if it was a prepaid connection.

But if it was a postpaid phone, you would have good reception and data connectivity in tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. If you went a little offbeat, your phone may or may not work depending on the service provider.

The next destination that you must visit during your Kashmir trip is Sonamarg. The place is easily accessible, remains open for most of the year, has plenty of hotels, offers amazing views, and is perfect for all kinds of trips.

Public transport is also easily available. There is a daily bus between Srinagar and Sonamarg. Other than that, shared cabs also travel on the route regularly.

For accommodation, there is a wide range of hotels to choose from, both for budget travelers as well as someone looking for a luxury stay. Read on to find out more.

The name Pahalgam needs no introduction. It is one of the most visited destinations of Kashmir, one that receives tourists all year long. No trip to Kashmir is complete unless Pahalgam is a part of the itinerary.

Located at a distance of about 100 kilometers from Srinagar, Pahalgam is best known for its awe-inspiring vistas, lush green meadows, dense forests, and pristine waters. The place is also noted for the annual pilgrimage to the shrine Amarnath Yatra that starts here in July and August.

But in my opinion, the actual fun of visiting Pahalgam is in the winter season. This is when the natural beauty of this place is at its best. Take a look at the video below to know what I am talking about.

Drung Waterfall

Drung Waterfall, also known as Drang Waterfall or Durung Waterfall, is a destination that must find a place in your itinerary if you are planning a winter trip to Kashmir. It may not be that large in size but the sight that it presents in the winter season is truly majestic and is sure to charm you off your feet.

As the temperature in the valley drops, the water of this fall starts to freeze. By early January, the entire face of the mountain that it falls from is covered by a thick layer of ice. The water still continues to flow down but is surrounded by huge icicles and snow.

The waterfall is located about 42 kilometers from Srinagar and 16 kilometers from Gulmarg. It remains accessible for all 12 months and can easily be included in your trip to Gulmarg. You can visit Drung at any time of the year but it is in the winter season when the waterfall is truly at its best.

Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is one of the least explored regions of Kashmir and the one that can truly be called an offbeat destination. It is a place of high scenic beauty that does not really get the attention that it truly deserves. The vistas and the natural beauty of the mountains that you see here are very different than what you will see elsewhere.

Usually, when you talk about visiting Kashmir, it is mostly 4 places that come to mind – Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Even Srinagar just acts as a base to explore the other three places.

But Kashmir is so much more. There are so many other places here that will leave you mesmerized if visited. Gurez is one such destination that I will highly recommend that you find a place for in your travel plans.

Let us now take a look at some offbeat destinations that do not find a place in everyone’s itinerary but are definitely worth visiting.

Yusmarg is located at a distance of about 50 kilometers from Srinagar in the Badgam district of Kashmir. At an altitude of 2,396 meters (7,861 ft), it is an alpine valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains and meadows of Pine and Fir.

It is one of those places in Kashmir that are immensely beautiful but do not get the attention that they rightfully deserve. But for someone wanting to go offbeat and stay away from the crowd, Yousmarg is perfect.

Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri is a small hill station in Kashmir. It lies in a bowl-shaped alpine valley surrounded by snow-clad mountains and meadows of Pine Fir and Deodar. It sits at an altitude of 2,730 meters (8,957 ft) above sea level and receives heavy snowfall in the winter season.

The region does not have all-year road connectivity yet and in the months of peak winter, it can get very difficult to reach here. For the rest of the year though, a trip to Doodhpathri can actually be made in less than half a day.

To be honest, it is not yet a hill station as there is little to no development in the region. What you see is nature in its raw form. There are just a few houses of the local shepherds and that is the only sign of civilization that you will see here.

The area is largely unexplored and receives very little tourism. However, efforts are being made by the authorities to develop it as a tourist destination. Mughal Road

Not many people would know about the Mughal Road. Srinagar Jammu National Highway, also known as NH44, is often considered to be the only road connecting the cities of Jammu and Srinagar.

It is true that it is indeed a better maintained, wider, more traveled upon, and shorter way to travel between the two places but it is definitely not the only one.

There actually exists another route that is far more scenic, less crowded, takes you through some internal parts of Kashmir, and has existed for far longer than the regular NH44 highway. Yes, I am talking about the historical Mughal road.

This route is the alternate way to travel between Jammu and Srinagar and to reach some internal areas of Kashmir like the town of Rajouri. It is also a very scenic route that definitely deserves to be explored.

Aharbal Waterfall

Aharbal Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kashmir. It is also the most easily accessible one and yet never crowded. Located at a distance of only about 70 kilometers from Srinagar, it is a place that is amazingly beautiful but does not get the attention that it truly deserves.

If you are planning to visit Kashmir, I highly recommend that you find a day in your itinerary for a visit to Aharbal. How can you plan that is what I have talked about in the article below.

Can you visit Aharbal Waterfall in the winter season? It will depend a lot on the weather at the time of your trip but yes, a trip can be planned. Take a look at this short video below to see how this beautiful waterfall looks in winter.

Daksum Valley

Daksum, also known as Daksum Valley or Daksum Village, is a viewpoint or a picnic spot located on the Anantnag-Kishtwar road near Sinthan Top. Surrounded by lush green mountains and sitting right next to the Bringhi River, it is a popular spot among the locals for family outings and school picnics.

If you are someone who likes spending time in nature, away from the crowd in an offbeat place, Daksum may just be your cup of tea. It really feels like in the middle of nowhere and if you were here during the weekdays, there would hardly be anyone around. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Daksum Valley .

Sinthan Top

Sinthan Top, also known as Sinthan Pass, is a mountain pass located in Kashmir’s Breng Valley, on the road that runs between Anantnag in Kashmir and Kishtwar in Jammu. At an altitude of 12,500 ft, the top of the pass is also known as the 360-degree viewpoint as it offers a charming panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the valley.

It is a beautiful mountain pass that should find a place in every tourist’s itinerary who is coming toward Pahalgam. Due to its close proximity, Sinthan Top can be easily incorporated with a trip to Pahalgam. The drive from Srinagar to Sinthan Top through the Daksum Valley is also quite scenic and offers a chance to visit some other destinations like Achabal Gardens, Kokernag, and Daksum.

Chatpal Valley

Chatpal, also called Chattabal, is not really a name that many tourists know about. It is a small valley located near Pahalgam but while Pahalgam receives thousands of visitors each year, almost no one goes in the direction of Chatpal. It is one of those places in Kashmir that are still unexplored and yet to find their place on the tourist map.

The majority of the folks you will find in Chatpal will just be the locals from Anantnag or any of the nearby villages, out there for a picnic or a family outing. Even they visit Chattabal usually over the weekends, on Sundays. For the rest of the week, you will hardly see anyone there.

Public Transport in Kashmir

The best way to travel to Kashmir is either by your self-owned vehicle or a private taxi. But if you are a budget traveler, you can also opt for public transport which is available in the form of buses and shared taxis. The problem however is that it is not frequent.

It will be hard to find a JKSRTC bus anywhere in Kashmir. You will have to rely on mini-buses and shared cabs operated by the locals. They do not have a set schedule or timetable but are available throughout the day.

If you are planning on renting a taxi for your trip, the posts below can help you get a cost estimate. An important thing that you should remember is that places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi rates.

What it means is that if you rented a taxi to Pahalgam from Srinagar, it could only drop you in Pahalgam. To visit local places like Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, and Aru Valley, you will have to rent a local cab in Pahalgam.

The same rule applies to Gulmarg. If you want to go for a drive to Bota Pathri, you will have to rent another cab in Gulmarg for that.

Renting a Bike

Renting a bike in Srinagar is a great way to explore for people who reach Kashmir by flight. There are a few bike rentals in the city which you can get the bikes from.

Food to Try in Kashmir

Your trip to not just Kashmir but any place is incomplete unless you have tasted the local cuisine. That in my opinion is actually one of the best parts of traveling to different places.

You can take a taxi for 5 days but if you are planning a trip in winter, then you will have to change at Tangmarg. For rest of the year, it can be the same cab.

1) Is Toyoto Etiros/Dzire is good for Gurez trip of you need to have Innova /Scorpio ? Do you know if Razdan pass would be open during October or there is chance of closure ?

2) I changed my plan a bit to skip Gulmarg as I am not interested in doing Gondola, so is there anything else interesting to do there, I assume As i am covering Doodthpatri from Srinagar, the scenary would be similar., what is your suggestion ?

1. Razdan Pass usually remains open in Oct. Scorpio / Innova will be better but it depends on the number of people traveling 2. Yeah, the scenery is more or less similar 3. Same on one day will be hectic. Doodhpathri is better

For Chakwali route, you will have to hire a Sumo from Dawar. The drivers from Srinagar usually refuse to go on that route due to extremely bad roads. A hatchback or a Sedan driver will definitely not go

Dear All, This is the review about Kashmironline. We booked on a package in this summer for a family through them, but the hotel which they have opted in Srinagar was not good. No power to stay, no water and no hot water as well. We have to ask for all service every now and then. But upfront the agency collects the payment. Also, they never respond. The reason for booking through a travel agent is that we will not have issues and it will be a safe travel, but here its very bad, there will be a response saying that they will do, but nothing will happen. Remember people travelling to Srinagar / Kashmir make sure you are clear on package, would recommend to make arrangements on your own. Do not depend on any travel agents. Specially Kashmironline at all. They are not friendly and held me in a hotel to pay the final amount. Never trust on any customer and they do not need any customer satisfaction. I have informed very clearly the balance 7-8% (Approx 9000) of amount will be paid on last day of my travel in morning, irrespective of telling and informing the same, they holded in the hotel in the lobby asking for balance payment two days prior itself. The agency called up the hotel informed that before I leave collect the balance money. That looks very bad in front of others asking for money as if am going to move away without paying from them. My only question is if you guys or agency never trust on customer, how do you expect the customer to trust you. If something goes wrong, you will never revert back right. Now, I had a bad and worst stay in Srinagar, they never responded to me anything about that at all. The kashmironline person was apologizing but nothing happened. The issues repeated thrice for all 3 days of stay, our stay was ruined. We went for sight-seeing late for all 3 days and we are not provided with basic necessity of things to stay. Irrespective of informing that Iam not comfortable on the first day itself. Please be aware of these things in Kashmir. Never book though kashmironline at all. They never bother about any feedback or comfortable stay of customer. Only money is important. The driver they organized doesn’t even have a courtesy and he dropped us the railway station by 9pm and have requested him to take me to 5km nearby for dinner which he denied. He never answered any calls after dropping us. Irrespective of informing that we need to have dinner before dropping us, he never bothered that Iam with 2 kids without food travelling for whole night. He was keen on moving away since the money is fully paid a day prior. Important is he knows entire story of this issue. They never change and felt bad for booking with them. Entire trip is ruined and I have give other hint to save other atleast, not to get cheated. Hello. Thanks for the details. I am planning Gulmarg directly from the airport (2 nights) , then Sonmarg (2 nights), then Pahalgam (3 nights) and then Srinagar (2 nights). Is that itinerary okay ? Are these places equidistant

2 and 3 days is a bit much. Gulmarg 1 day, Sonamarg 1 day and Pahalgam 1 night should be more than enough. You can spend rest of your time visiting other places.

You have written in simple language and from your first-hand experience. I am a Sr. Citizen and also handicapped. I use an artificial limb, but mobility is not an issue (maybe rocky climbing and snow/water). I do travel a lot. My question is: Will you recommend Gondola Phase I and II? My Travel Agent has custom-built an Itinerary for my wife and me using taxis only for the 2 of us. I was told that there is a Union issue and private taxis are not allowed in Gulmarg and Pahalgam and I will have to book local taxis there.

Please advise keeping my handicap in mind. Thanks.

If you are going to stay in Gulmarg overnight, then yes, I will recommend the Gondola ride. If you are just planning a day trip, it will be best to skip it.

You do not need to rent another taxi in Gulmarg for sightseeing. They may ask to take you to Bota Pathri by renting another cab but avoid that. There is nothing there. All the other places in Gulmarg are near the market area. No additional taxi is needed.

Yes, you will have to rent another taxi in Pahalgam for local sightseeing. Srinagar taxi will not be allowed there.

There are so many very well known and most liked temples in Kashmir I didn’t find any mention of these temples and places in your article is there any particular reason or you missed it In case you need any help to draw your attention towards those places I can do that

I have a mobility issue. Though I drive but I walk with crutches and small distances only. I followed your blog on Prashar Lake and you had clarified all my concerns so well that I drove upto the last possible point without any issue and then a little walk to the point from where the lake is visible. Though I didn’t trek down to the lake and temple. That was little too much for me.

Anyway, I am now planning to drive to Kashmir in Sept 1st week and plan to spend 3 days each at Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg. I wanted to ask you how long is the walks at various gardens in Srinagar. I also plan to do Doodhpatri, Yousmarg and Achabal.

Is there too much to walk in Phase 1 and 2 of Gandola, also Sonmarg, Kokernag, Daksum areas? I will be thankful if you can reply to me and help me plan better.

Hi Swati – Sorry I had been traveling myself for the last couple of months and did not see your comment until now. Sorry for the late reply. I guess you are already in Kashmir by now.

In 2021, in an attempt to get to know rural India, Dr Mitra and her son embarked on the trip.

“I must say with honesty that up until I took this trip I wasn’t very keen on either traveling or long-distance driving. The idea of exploring the unexplored parts of India with my son in tow was what pushed me to take this trip,” she says. This was to be a trip with other friends but with the pandemic hitting us in 2020, most of them backed out.

To test the waters, once the lockdown restrictions were eased, Dr Mitra drove from Kochi to Nilgiris. “The idea of this trip was to meet and interact with the Toda community. I was both surprised and taken aback by how well he adjusted. Even when I went around the village meeting locals, he kept himself engaged,” she says. So, she decided to take another trip. This time covering Coorg, Belur, Belawadi and Melukote.

‘The more I drove, the more I enjoyed it.’

“Travelling is not just about getting into a car and setting out,” she says. “I spent a good portion of early 2021 planning this trip – the route, what all I would need, understating the terrain and climate in each region and speaking to as many people as I could to get information. Through this I realised that the devil truly lies in the details and since I was taking this trip with my son, I wanted to make sure I had all bases covered,” she adds.

The objective that Dr Mitra charted out for herself was very clear — visit at least one village per state and discover its glorious arts, crafts and culture. In doing this she wanted to promote tourism to the unexplored parts of rural India. To be 100 per cent ready for the trip, Dr Mitra also enrolled in classes to learn about the basics of car maintenance, changing tyres, checking for air pressure, etc. Even the packing for the trip had to have many considerations and since she was traveling with her son, she also had to pack food and medicines.

She says, “The kind of experience that this has given my son is unparalleled. From seeing how a 400-year-old Muslim community weaves rare mats on a floor loom using locally-grown grass to discovering Roman ruins in a village 7 km from Pondicherry, there were learnings at every stop.” It gave both mother and son experiences that expanded their culinary, historical and geographical understanding of India itself.

The journey that started from Kerala took the duo up to Jammu and saw them returning via Uttarakhand, Dehradun, Jaipur, Ujjain, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa back to their starting point.

While each place has left Dr Mitra with something, she says that the pristine beauty of Sonamarg and Zo Jila left her absolutely stunned and the warmth exuded by the locals in Assam and Chhattisgarh will always be things that she cherishes.

Speaking of traveling as a single woman across India, she says that she never felt scared or vulnerable through the journey. “I was always in control — even in some of the moments when I either overshot our destination or took a wrong path or turn. Nothing left me frazzled during this trip,” she says.

Some of the surprises for Dr Mitra came from the North East of India and she says, “Meeting some of the Bodo poachers who have now transformed into conservationists near the Manas National park was eye-opening as was visiting India’s first green village, Khonoma in Nagaland. All the tribals here are into eco-friendly farming and have completely stopped hunting.”She stresses on how safe it is for solo female travellers to visit the North East.

Dr Mitra urges others to take such trips , and says, “These adventures teach you so much about life, and if you can take your children along then the learning you are exposing them to will hold them in good stead for a long time to come.”

1. Get started early each morning and ensure that you stop driving by sunset. 2. Find homestays in as many places as you can. This will enhance your travelling experience, is a safer option and will also help in supporting the local communities. 3. Your vehicle must have a basic repair kit. Even if you are not adept at using it, someone along the way might be able to help out with it. Also ensure that you have a spare wheel in your vehicle. 4. Do not hesitate in taking your children along with you. They adapt to new surroundings and take in experiences far better than adults. The trip will do them a lot of good, so don’t think twice. 5. India is safe for solo female travellers. All it requires is meticulous planning and background research before one sets out on the trip.

The Perfect 5 Days in Kashmir | A Do-It-Yourself Road Trip

Kashmir was as beautiful as I’d heard. It met all my expectations and more. Tall chinar laden mountains, hurt-my-eyes expansive green valleys, colourfully dressed chatty locals, delectable local food, lush gardens of flowers and fountains, a marvellous drop of the mountain at every turn of the road… not surprising then that Kashmir is called Heaven on Earth.

Therefore, Kashmir warrants not one, but many visits to take it all in. The itinerary I’ve listed here is the most commonly done, an introduction to Kashmir if you will, and a tourist should start here before attempting the more challenging routes. You can also avail of a travel agent’s multi-day package (dime-o-dozen, INR 12-15k / person usually for 4 nights and 5 days), but here’s how to do it yourself, by road, the best way to experience the region’s true beauty, in my view.

What was slightly putting-off in Kashmir and took some getting used to, was the constant soliciting, selling and overpricing of goods and services. Tourism is the only source of income for many in the valley and it seemed to me as if the locals aimed to wring the most out of every deal. Therefore, expect to be overcharged for everything, and thus, bargain hard everywhere. Although, I think there’s a thick line between a ‘tourist’ and a ‘friends/family’ in Kashmir. Once you cross that line, things turn around remarkably.

Now, to the five-day do-it-yourself Kashmir road trip itinerary.

What this itinerary doesn’t have. Pony rides. Luxury stays. Leisure time off. Winter sports.

There are easier ways to do this journey, through a multi-day organized tour like this or this .

About Kashmir

Kashmir is the northernmost geographical region of India, made of the Himalayan mountain ranges, verdant valleys, lush lakes, and gushing rivers. The valley was apparently formed of a lake, drained through the gap of Baramulla. India controls half the area of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which comprises Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Pakistan controls the rest, divided into two provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The dominant religion of the region is Islam.

Tourism in Kashmir is fraught with constant tensions between Pakistan, Islamic militants, and the Indian army. But, for the most part, tourists are safe.

Moving Around

There are two ways to do my itinerary.

First – set Srinagar as the base and take day trips to nearby areas of interest. The towns mentioned in this plan are all in different directions and you’ll likely pass Srinagar in all of them, as you move from one to another.

The other way is to go from one town to another, passing Srinagar but not stopping there. This will increase your travel time, but you might want to do it to merely to spend your night in a different place (also, usually, a different altitude).

A daily cab (Innova/ Tavera) with a driver can be hired starting at INR 2500/day.

If you prefer a bike, which we used, they can be rented from Kashmir Travelogue or Kashmir Adventure Bikers for INR 1400/day. Documents asked: Passport copy, Aadhaar card, Driver’s license. You’ll need to deposit your Aadhaar card with them.

Day 1: Srinagar

The capital of Kashmir is noisy, dusty, curious, colourful. We arrived with zero bookings and were approached by Nissar at the airport who promised a world-class hotel at Dal Lake for INR 4500/ night. We agreed to check it out before committing—we intended to use the free ride from the airport to the city (It normally costs INR 500 to go from the airport to Dal Lake/ Lal Chowk. There is a prepaid taxi booth outside the airport gate. However, Nissar promised to adjust the amount with a full-day car hire for sightseeing which would’ve cost INR 2000. Alternately, we could simply pay him INR 500 if we didn’t like his place, or didn’t take the cab. To our tired minds, it seemed like a no-loss deal).

The ride through Srinagar was eventful, with traffic jams and noisy honks; people in Srinagar love their horns and use them liberally. We arrived at Ghat 17 and were ferried by a shikara to a cluster of ramshackle houseboats, one of which was Nissar’s Star of Kashmir (not available online). The houseboat was not luxurious but it was unique, and we loved the wooden loft that jutted daintily out into the water. The area was less touristy and crowded than I’d expected. We were a bit tired from the early morning flight, and so, we decided to stay put, at least for the night (we negotiated the nightly charge down to INR 3000/night eventually). We spent another thirty minutes fending off the package deal the houseboat manager was trying to push down on us (this would be a recurring theme) before we managed to retire to our quaint room.

If you like serene and quiet, you could base yourself on the less touristy Nigeen Lake , instead of Dal Lake. But we found staying at Dal Lake convenient because it was in the middle of the city. I’ll also recommend staying in a houseboat rather than on land; the experience is memorable.

Sukoon Houseboats was recommended to us for a luxury stay on Dal Lake. It looked beautiful but was unavailable in the days we went.

Things to do in Srinagar

Shankaracharya Temple: The temple—dedicated to Lord Shiva and from the 9th century AD—is located on top of the Shankaracharya Hill on the Zabarwan Range in Srinagar. At a height of 1,000 feet above the valley, it gives a nice view of the city of Srinagar, and especially, of the serpentine 8 km long Dal Lake. The temple can be reached by climbing about 250 steps. The area is under CRPF control, so you cannot carry cameras or mobile phones to the top. There are no locker facilities (that I noticed). So, best to leave them in the cab or at your hotel before you come.

Mughal Gardens: There are several so-called pleasure gardens in Kashmir. The most famous are Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashma Shahi and Pari Mahal. These gardens are fashioned after the Persian Paradise gardens—made of terraces—arranged around a central water channel—lined with fountains—and planted with a variety of flowers and trees. In the end, though, one garden is like the other. Altogether, I enjoyed Nishat Garden the most. More on the gardens here .

Shikara Ride: An hour-long shikara ride costs upwards of INR 1000 for an hour (again, depending on your negotiation skills) and takes you to up to 7 points of interest in Dal Lake, which include a ‘function-boat’, some interesting movie spots ( Mission Kashmir !), and the Dal Lake market. The best time to take the ride is at dusk just around sunset. The weather is balmy and the ride is pleasantly soporific. We were exhausted when we did it, but the ride took away all our tiredness (just as Aamir, our shikara rower promised). Beware of the many other shikaras that will row to yours, stick by its side, and try to sell you their overpriced goods.

Lal Chowk: is Srinagar’s city centre of sorts and also a bustling marketplace. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, unfurled the Indian national flag in 1948 in Lal Chowk, shortly after the country gained independence from the British. The chowk has been used for several political meetings since. The iconic clock tower at Lal Chowk was built in 1980. I preferred the shops here to elsewhere in the city, the ‘no bargaining’ policy (in many but not all stores) providing relief. But you’ve got to look for the good stuff.

Mosques : You’ll spot several unique mosques on your tour around Srinagar. Hazratbal Mosque and Jamia Mosque are among the most impressive. The Jamia Masjid is located in the middle of the Old City, very near to Lal Chowk. The impressive and humongous mosque (33,000 people can pray here at one time!) was commissioned by Sultan Sikandar in 1394 CE and today is considered the focal point of local dissent and political discourse. You’ll often find the main doors locked, in fear of a riot. The Hazratbal Shrine is another impressive mosque located in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar. It is said to be home to a relic, Moi-e-Muqqadas , which is widely believed to be the hair of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Day 2: Sonmarg

Sonmarg is located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 80 km from Srinagar. The ‘Golden Meadow’ is perched at 8,960 ft, and is close to several peaks such as Machoi Glacier, Sirbal Peak, and Kolahoi Peak. It also has a historical significance, as a gateway on the ancient Silk Road, connecting Jammu and Kashmir with Tibet. Ponies can be hired for a trip up to Thajiwas Glacier , a major attraction during the summer months. But what we really enjoyed, was the 25 km ride to zero point through Zoji La pass.

At about 15 km from Sonmarg is the Baltal Valley whose splendour can be enjoyed on the ride through Zoji La Pass. The valley acts as a base for pilgrims camping for the yatra to the nearby Amarnath Temple . (There are two routes: Sonamarg – Baltal Route and Pahalgam – Chandanwari Track Route)

An under-construction tunnel is expected to replace Zoji La Pass, enabling all-weather connection between Srinagar and Kargil.

Day 3: Pahalgam

Pahalgam is located at an altitude of 7,200 feet and is 95 km east of Srinagar. The travel time from Srinagar is around 3 hours. The town is the starting point of the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave of Amarnath. The Lidder River runs through it offering several picture-perfect picnic spots. Literally, the name of the town translates to mean the ‘Valley of Shepherds’.

The main things to see in Pahalgam are Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. The ride to Pahalgam is plenty interesting too, lined as the streets are with apple orchards, saffron fields, and cricket-bat factories.

Betab Valley lies between the two Himalayan Ranges–Pir Panjal and Zanskar. It can be reached in ten minutes from the Pahalgam city centre. The valley is named after the Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh hit debut film Betaab . The final point is a man-made park (INR 100 entry fee) with some good views of the Lidder River and mountains. The park is worth a 30-minute stop and it can get crowded.

Aru Valley is located 12 km from Pahalgam and takes about 20-30 minutes to reach. As always, the ride was better than the destination with several awesome views of the Lidder River and the valley as we rode along to the top. Aru Valley is also the base camp for trekking to the Kolhoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake. It is also the location of the JKTDC at Aru Valley. You can take a pony ride to see the valley or have a chai and plate of bread pakora at the JKTDC canteen once you reach the final point.

Chandanwari is where the Amarnath Yatra starts—the other route. It is situated at an elevation of 9,500 feet and is located 16 kilometres from Pahalgam.

Outside vehicles are not allowed to do sightseeing in Pahalgam. They can only drop you at the hotel. Only local taxis can ferry tourists in the town. Since we had a bike, we had no problem moving around.

Day 4: Pahalgam

Laze around in the day and take in more of the beauty of Pahalgam, or move your ass and head to one of the highly touted treks that start from here. Among the popular ones are the Sheshnag and Verinag Lake treks. There are several trek organizers to go with, Highhill Tours being one. We were too tired to do a trek, so we just soaked the beauty around and lazed in the market area—both plenty interesting. Be sure to eat at Food Point , a nondescript eatery frequented by locals. I had my first wazwan dishes here. If you fancy an early morning coffee, go to Volga . But again, be prepared to tip heavily.

Day 5: Gulmarg

At 8,700 feet above sea level, Gulmarg is best visited in winter when there is a couple of feet deep snow, and the mountains are covered in them, offering entrancing views. Gulmarg is also home to the famous skiing location of Kongdoor-Aferwat. In the summer and autumn months though, you can simply enjoy rides in the Gulmarg Gondola and the views of the valley it offers.

The Gulmarg Gondola is Asia’s largest and highest and the world’s second-largest and second-highest cable car project. It can be ridden in two phases. Phase 1 is at 9800 feet above sea level and takes you to Kongdoor Valley. Tickets are available from 9 am to 5 pm. Ticket costs are INR 750/ pp.

Phase 2 of the Gulmarg Gondola is at 13,700 feet above sea level. Tickets are available from 10 am to 4 pm. Phase 2 is often closed due to bad weather or maintenance and there is no way to check beforehand. To go to phase 2 you need to reach phase 1, either through the gondola or on horse/ foot (takes 45 min-1 hours). From Phase 2 you can see the Nanda Devi peak and, some say, even the LOC. Ticket costs are INR 950/ pp.

You can buy the tickets online but you can also buy on-site—preferable really—because what if the gondola is closed for the day? Also, all you get online is a voucher which will be required to be exchanged for a boarding pass at the ticket counter. So, there’s really no point.

Another tip for the Gondola: either be late or very early because the ticket queues can be long (especially during season—the winter months). Also, do not listen to the stories the local guides tell you. The heckling can be relentless and they’re just out to make a quick buck.

The Khyber Resort is a good upscale alternative to JKTDC. I’ve heard of people planning their trip in winter to accommodate availability in the hotel. We stayed at the JKTDC hutments and booked on arrival at the clubhouse. If the manager is not around, go to the restaurant to get his contacts. Or book online.

The ride from Gulmarg back to Srinagar airport takes approximately 2 hours. Take a detour to Lal Chowk to do some last-minute shopping, or eat at a local restaurant such as Ahdoos or Jhelum Cafe .

Good to Know

Partaking in Kashmiri Wazwan should be on top of your list of things to do. Kashmiri Wazwan dishes are multi-Kashmiri dishes, usually meat-based using lamb, beef or chicken, and served during weddings. During a wedding, guests are seated in a group on a dastarkhwan or sheet and they share the meal in a Traem . Most restaurants in Kashmir list several delectable Wazwan dishes on their menu. Rista (meatballs in red gravy), rogan josh (tender lamb cooked with Kashmiri spices), and yakhni (meat in spiced yoghurt curry) are among the most popular ones.

There are only a few shops in Srinagar that sell alcohol (since liquor is haram in Islam). 3 are on Boulevard Road. One is hidden inside a shanty next to Ghat 7 (I think – check with your driver). Prices are astronomical and arbitrary, but what can you do? As far as I know, one cannot purchase alcohol anywhere else in Kashmir; only in these stores in Srinagar.

Good Time to Visit

March is the most pleasant with remnants of snow and the onset of balmy weather. October, when I visited, was not half bad. The valleys were green, with loads of flowers, days sunny, and nights tolerably cold. I didn’t see any snow though. The best time to visit for cryo-phobics is March to October. For those looking to enjoy winter, it would be between November and March.

Avoid shopping at tourist hotspots like Gulmarg and the Dal Lake Market. I found goods at Lal Chowk more reasonably priced and the vendors less likely to hike prices, therefore avoiding acrimonious negotiations. On the way back from Pahalgam, you can pick up saffron from the store before Pampore (INR 150/1 gm). You can pick up Kahwa from departmental stores to gift people (INR 150 onwards for a small box). Other commonly purchased gifts are dry fruits, Kashmiri shawls, stoles, and carpets. Try getting them from Lal Chowk or the Polo View Market .

We checked the JKTDC website for Government Hotels in Jammu and Kashmir. Like all government hotels, they were in great locations and inexpensive (INR 1700-2300/night). Not the best maintained though.

Read the TripAdvisor forums, such as this one on Gulmarg Gondola , before you visit a place, to prepare for the assault of touts.

Alternate Itinerary Additions

You can consider visiting Yousmarg, Doodhpathri, and Aharbal, all 2-3 hours from Srinagar and much less touristy than the ones above.

5 days in Kashmir Yousmarg Doodpathri Aharbal

Alternate 5-day trip

Guerez valley or Gurais, is located in the high Himalayas, about 123 kilometres from Srinagar in northern Kashmir. It is 8400 feet above sea level. While Gurez is touted to be beautiful, it is close to the ‘LOC’ or Line of Control and falls barely on the Indian side of the border. For the longest time, Gurez was off-limit to tourists, and even today, it is quite difficult to reach.

Srinagar to Guerez by road looked like an awesome alternative which we evaluated but eventually discarded because it was our first time in Kashmir and we wanted a taste of the tourist track before we committed to something more adventurous. We got to know that a chopper service (INR 3000/per head) to Guerez is available at the Srinagar airport. The service is available only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It wasn’t operational when we went probably because of the Covid-19-related restrictions. By road, the journey takes 6-7 hours. There’s a JKTDC guest house at Guerez for an overnight stay.

5. Goa to Pune

Pune to Goa route is suffused with lush green Konkan vegetation. Your journey shall be comfortable and scenic. However, at times, there can be rainfalls to interrupt your bike journey. But the meandering roads bordered with dense trees shall compensate for it. In between the Satara highway is the best to travel. Although he journey will be long yet it will land you to the cultural and cosmopolitan city of Maharastra, Pune.

The road conditions are quite decent from Pune to Nashik . If you don't mind a few extra kilometers, the Pune-Kalyan-Nasik route is your best bet. Even though the route is longer, you reach nashik within 4.5 hours as compared to the usual 5-6 hours by the regular Pune-Narayangaon-Sagamner-Sinnar-Nashik route.

7. Nasik to Vadodara

12. Jalandhar to Udhampur

Enter the district of Udhampur that acts as a gateway to most of the mountainous Himalayan region in India. Its one of those places from where you can also go to the famous shrine of Vaishno Devi. Katra is situated at a distance of about 35 km from Udhampur and serves as the base camp to reach the sacred sanctum of the Vaishno Devi.

13. Udhampur to Srinagar

14. Srinagar to Kargil

Usually the Srinagar - Leh circuit is covered in the span of two days with a night stop at Kargil , however you can make it a three day journey with another night stop at either Alchi or Lamayuru. A few kms beyond Drass is the Drass war memorial, built in the memory of fallen soldiers in the 1999 Kargil war and a must visit for every traveler passing through this route. From here it is a straight run to Kargil and you will be there in less than an hours time. Kargil is the intended pit stop for the majority of travelers and thus has quite a few accommodation options.

15. Kargil to Leh

From Kargil, you shall have to take a road to Lamayuru and then to Hangro Loops, the 18 loops are fast yet sharp loops with steep gorges. You will have to drive carefully here. Next major attraction comes in the form of Gurudwara Patthar Sahib located in the town of Nimmu (55kms from Leh), beyond which its fast and straight forward drive/ride to Leh.

From Kerala to Kashmir: A young woman's solo adventure

She was not allowed to go on school trips. There was a reason behind it though. She had a habit of wetting her bed at night. Since then she wanted to travel, savour in the free-spiritedness of exploring the world alone. And Amish Mushabir has come back after embarking on a solo trip to Kashmir. This entrepreneur and mother of two kids took to Kashmir without any prior planning on a stringent budget. She savoured the snow-capped mountains, luminous lakes, and the gorgeous gardens before heading back.

Love for travelling is hereditary

Amis is Tirur Kainakkara Mohammed Ibrahim’s second daughter. Till the age of 40, Ibrahim travelled the world. He came back and married at the age of 40. Her mother hails from Kozhikode. Five years ago he passed away. Amis has inherited his love for travelling.

Amis after finishing her MBA got married at the age of 21 and settled in Saudi Arabia. She worked in an American Company in Saudi for 10 years. Her husband Mubashir, who works as an HR Manager in a Saudi company is aware of her wanderlust.

From Saudi to home

There was a restriction for women to drive alone in Saudi. But Amis would take time off to travel despite the restrictions at GCC. Two years ago, she came back to India. She had two things planned- a place to pursue her psychology and another to take up her love for travelling. Through a vlog called Travel Badaais, she hoped to chronicle her solo travels. But lockdown put a lid on her plans. Earlier she would book the best of resorts, chart route maps to ensure safety before getting ready to travel. But this time she decided to dodge such safety measures and travel like a common man.

Heaven on earth

So Amis decides to travel to Kashmir without any prior plans. From Kerala, she reached Delhi by train. The plan was to reach Srinagar from Delhi by road. But they weren’t allowing tourists to take the road to Srinagar. That’s why she decided to take a flight to Srinagar. From Srinagar, she hired a scooter and scouted the length and breadth of Kashmir. While travelling to Gulmarg and Pahalgam, she would meet villagers on the way and uploaded them in her vlog. In 8 days she covered 800 km. She would make do with the offered food and lodging and explore Kashmir. No wonder it turned out to be one of the most memorable days of her life.

A few unusual places to see in Kashmir

Kokernag: Which translates as “Hen shaped springs” is 80 km from Srinagar and 25 km from Anantnag and is situated 7,000 feet above the sea level. You can see a collection of freshwater springs, which is also the largest freshwater spring of Kashmir. Trout fishing is hugely popular in this part of the world, and they are even sold to tourists. It’s also famous for Namdah, handicrafts, Gabbah carpet and shawl weaving. You can also catch several places of worship like Hazrat Baba Reshi, Shilagram Temple, Goswami Gund Ashram, Hanuman Temple, Sita Temple, Nila Nag, Ganesh Temple, and Shiva Temple.

Daksum valley: This valley is located in Bhringi River which is ahead of the Mughal Gardens of Achabal. It offers something for everyone—stunning scenery, mountains, picnic spots, plenty of romantic getaways, cone-bearing forests; hidden grassy meadows and snowy mountains. You can see the beauty of natural springs and embrace the lifestyle of traditional villages. It is also a perfect place for camping and trekking. The path that leads to the Simthan Pass is exquisite so are the wooden slopes on either side of Daksum which are covered with grass coating. It’s also a great place for trout fishing.

Gurez: This high-altitude Himalayan village is perched at a height of around 2400m and is 86km from Bandipore and 123km from Srinagar. The valley is encircled by snow-coated mountains and presents a spectacular view of the Kishanganga River flowing through the valley. It’s considered as one of the most amazing places to visit in Kashmir as this valley gives shelter to a small number of exotic wildlife including snow leopard and brown bear. Due to heavy snowfall, Gurez is cut away from the world from November to May. By this time Razdan Pass will be completely snowed out. The tourism department of Kashmir provides Gurez Helicopter services for tourists to promote tourism. Trekking can be dangerous due to its close proximity to the border. However, the scenic landscapes, the beautiful green turf on the woodlands, fishing in Kishen Ganga River, Potato and maize fields possess distinctive charms of their own. Endless forests cling from the bottom of the valley to the peaks; mesmerizing beauty of the Habba Khatoon Peak offers a blissful experience to the tourists. It is difficult to describe the colours of Gurez valley without visiting it once in life.

Tulail Valley: Adding Tulail Valley to your Kashmir Tour list is a great idea. In fact, it can be covered on the same day trip from Gurez as it is a Himalayan sub–valley of Gurez. The road to Tulail from Gurez passes through the scenic landscapes of the Kishanganga River. En route, you will cross the villages of Barnai, Chakwali, Kashpat, Zargai and finally, you can get to see the Purani Tulail Village. The scenic landscapes are a visual treat to your senses. The virgin valley which keeps flourishing in summer is ideal for Instagramming. Again, you can find a lot of freshwater trout here. The green mountains and the flower meadows add a special beauty to this valley. You need a permit to enter the Tulail region from Dawar Police Station. As the village is on the LOC, it is compulsory to seek a series of permissions from Army Camps and SP of this area.

Bangus Valley: This hidden gem is located in the north of Kashmir in the Kupwara district and lies within the Handwara sub-district. The valley is positioned close to the line of control between India and Pakistan and has some really interesting ecological areas surrounded by green grasslands, meadows, and springs. It is even proposed to be a biological reserve as it produces a fine quality of grass for cattle which also has a medicinal value. Try the spring and summer seasons (April to June) as the weather is pleasant and even monsoon months (July to September) are favourable.

Poonch: Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Kashmir, you can see lush green meadows, snow-capped mountains and the eighteenth century Poonch Fort which is spectacular to say the least. The seven lakes of Girgan Dhok have to be in your itinerary, alongside many religious shrines like Baksh Sahib and Gurudwara Nangali Sahib.

Jama Masjid: This mosque, situated in Nowhatta is considered a pivotal one in Srinagar. This was constructed by Sultan Sikandar during the 1400 AD and was expanded by Sikandar’s son, Zain-ul-Abidin. You’ll find 370 wooden pillars in this mosque and a mesmerizing courtyard – both of them are considered to be the major highlights of this mosque.

Aru Valley: Aru Valley, put together against the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas is only 12 km from Pahalgam. The valley serves as a base camp for several treks and lakes including Tarsar Lake and Kolhoi glacier. It is also home to the Aru River which is a tributary of the Lidder River. Apart from its scenery, you can also try horse riding and hiking. During the winter months, the view of the whole valley covered with snow is a comfort to the eyes.

Roadtripping through heaven – 9 days of bliss in Kashmir

Setting off on an epic road trip to the mesmerising realm of Kashmir was a dream come true for me. The allure of its majestic mountains, tranquil lakes, and vibrant culture had always captivated my imagination. So, with an insatiable wanderlust burning inside me, I meticulously charted out a thrilling nine-day Kashmir itinerary from Delhi and back. Going through all the places to visit in Kashmir so carefully, trying not to miss anything.

Little did I know that this adventure would be made even more incredible, thanks to the fantastic folks at Savaari Car Rentals and their amazing drivers. These road trip experts not only made our journey comfortable and hassle-free but also added a touch of warmth and personalisation to the whole experience. Buckle up as I take you along the winding roads, picturesque vistas, and cultural encounters that made this escapade through the enchanting valleys of Kashmir truly unforgettable. Day 1 – Delhi to Amritsar

The road trip from Delhi to Amritsar was like stepping into a world where history, spirituality, and culinary delights collided. With a tank full of gas, an open mind, an insatiable appetite for adventure, and my Savaari driver, I set off on this thrilling journey. As we left the bustling streets of Delhi behind, the landscape transformed into a picturesque panorama of lush fields and quaint villages. Along the way, we couldn’t resist stopping at roadside dhabas to indulge in mouthwatering Punjabi delicacies, from buttery parathas to finger-licking tandoori delights. The food is truly one of the best things about being on a road trip.

Finally, as we arrived in Amritsar, the city’s vibrant energy and rich heritage embraced us. The iconic Golden Temple stood tall, radiating an aura of tranquillity and spiritual devotion. Day 2 – Amritsar to Doda

The next morning we left from Amritsar to Doda. It was like venturing into a hidden gem nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir. With the thrill of the open road coursing through our veins, we left Amritsar behind, bidding adieu to its vibrant energy and rich heritage. As we drove through the winding roads, the countryside unfolded before our eyes, adorned with rolling hills, verdant meadows, and glistening streams. The journey was not only about the destination but also about the experiences along the way. Booking a Savaari allowed us to make pit stops in quaint towns, savouring the local delicacies and immersing ourselves in the warmth of the people.

Finally, we reached Doda, a place of tranquillity and breathtaking natural beauty. It was almost insane how drastically the landscape changed in just a few hours. I visited the ancient Chinta Valley, where time seemed to stand still amidst the mystical ruins and sacred temples. As the evening approached, I found myself captivated by the mesmerising sunset at the picturesque Doda Viewpoint, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. I am glad Doda was not missing from my Kashmir itinerary.

Day 3 – Doda to Kishtwar

The next morning, I started my day by immersing myself in the pristine beauty of the Chenab River, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding verdant hills. The melodious sound of chirping birds accompanied me as I hiked through lush meadows and dense forests, breathing in the crisp mountain air. We had to leave to the next spot on the Kashmir itinerary.

As our wheels traced the winding roads, leaving Doda, the towering mountains and cascading waterfalls mesmerised us at every turn. The air was filled with the aroma of pine forests, and the sound of gushing rivers provided a symphony to our adventure. Along the way, we encountered charming villages, where the locals greeted us with warm smiles and tales of their mountainous homeland.

Although there is a lot to do in Kishtwar, I decided to connect to nature. As I ventured into this pristine sanctuary, a sense of tranquillity enveloped me. The lush greenery, dense forests, and snow-capped peaks formed a stunning backdrop for wildlife enthusiasts like myself. With each step, I immersed myself in the rich biodiversity that thrived within the sanctuary. From spotting elusive species like the Himalayan black bear and the Kashmir stag to witnessing vibrant birdlife, the sanctuary offered a glimpse into the natural splendour of the region. I was able to trek without worrying because I just asked my Savaari cab driver to wait for me at the ending point so that I could just sit in the car and relax after it.

Day 4 – Kishtwar to Pahalgam

The journey to Pahalgam was a short one but long enough for me to rest up for the exciting destination. As I travelled along winding roads, I encountered majestic mountains, gushing rivers, and untouched villages before reaching the serene beauty of Pahalgam. We first went sledging in Chandanwari, which was so much fun. Except for the part when I had to drag the sledge back up the hill. I even bought some souvenirs from the local shops around. In the night, I rented a tent from a nearby shop to camp under the sky in Betab Valley. It was an item from my bucket list that I just had to strike off. I was a little sceptical at first. Alone, in a valley, in the wild. But my driver reassured me. He told me that we could fill the car with emergency supplies and that he would park the car just nearby on the road in case something was required. I could peacefully spend the night looking up at the night sky, thinking of all the thousand fleeting thoughts all at once and yet nothing at all. Interestingly, Doda was not in my initial Kashmir itinerary, but driver bhaiya suggested it, and I am glad I did not miss it.

Day 5 – Pahalgam to Pulwama

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside my tent, and there is no better way to wake up. As I realised that I was in a tent in Kashmir, the smile on my face broadened so much that I was worried that my jaw would start hurting. Leaving behind the serene charm of Pahalgam, I embarked on a road trip that promised to unveil new wonders at every turn. As the scenic route unfolded before me, I was captivated by the majestic mountains, lush meadows, and the gentle flow of the Lidder River accompanying my journey. It was so beautiful, and I wanted to stop for a picnic. This is what makes road trips fun. The air was filled with the fragrance of blooming flowers and the melodies of chirping birds.

On reaching Pulwama, my first stop was the Pari Mahal, a fort that brought me back in time with it. Then we were off to the Swami Temple Ruins, this place is so eccentric and beautiful. And I ended my day with a nice golden hour photoshoot at the tulip garden. The driver bhaiya was nice enough to click the endless streams of pictures for me. As the sun set below the horizon, I watched it go down and bid adieu to the day. Pulwama should definitely be on your Kashmir itinerary.

Day 6 – Pulwama to Srinagar

The journey from Pulwama to Srinagar wasn’t very long, but every corner of Kashmir is just perfect for driving around. Which is maybe the reason why making a Kashmir itinerary is so difficult. Once in Srinagar, The day began with a serene Shikara boat ride on the iconic Dal Lake, gliding through the shimmering waters while being surrounded by floating gardens and traditional houseboats. Then the driver bhaiya suggested this amazing kebab and tea place for some snacks. He always has the best suggestions.

Then I went exploring the bustling lanes of the old city and the lively markets. As the day drew to a close, I witnessed the breathtaking sunset from the iconic Shankaracharya Hill, overlooking the city with panoramic views that took my breath away. Srinagar left an indelible mark on my heart with its timeless beauty, cultural treasures, and warm Kashmiri hospitality, making the day a truly unforgettable experience.

Take a peaceful Shikara boat ride on the iconic Dal Lake, gliding through the serene waters and exploring the floating gardens and houseboats.
Visit the magnificent Mughal Gardens, including Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi, known for their stunning terraced lawns, vibrant flower beds, and cascading fountains.
Explore the bustling lanes of the old city and indulge in shopping for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts, such as Pashmina shawls, Kashmiri carpets, and intricate woodwork.
Enjoy a scenic drive to the nearby hill station of Gulmarg, where you can experience thrilling activities like skiing, snowboarding, and cable car rides.

Day 7 – Srinagar to Gulmarg

The next morning, as we hit the road, the crisp mountain air and breathtaking views set the tone for an unforgettable journey. The first stop in our Kashmir itinerary was the charming village of Tangmarg, where we decided to take a thrilling detour. We hopped on sturdy mountain bikes and explored the scenic trails that led us through lush forests and rolling meadows. The adrenaline rush as we navigated the challenging terrains was truly invigorating.

After a memorable biking experience, we continued our road trip to Gulmarg, a winter wonderland that transforms into a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts during the summer months. Upon arrival, I wasted no time before engaging in exciting activities like horseback riding or taking the exhilarating cable car ride to Kongdori Mountain. The panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and vast meadows left us in awe. The road trip from Srinagar to Gulmarg was a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and unforgettable moments, leaving us with cherished memories of this enchanting region.

Things to do in Gulmarg –

Day 8 – Gulmarg to Sanasar

After the bike ride in Tangmarg, I wanted more. More adrenaline, more adventure and more fun. So, next on the Kashmir itinerary was Sanasar. The road trip from Gulmarg to Sanasar was an adrenaline-fueled adventure through the stunning landscapes of Kashmir. As we left Gulmarg late at night, we reached our destination nice and bright. I set out for my day in Sanasar.

First, I went to kill this adrenaline keeda that was constantly on my mind. I went paragliding. It was insanely scary and fun at the same time. Post that, I wanted to thank God for not killing me and to do that, we went atop the Patnitop hill to the Nag temple to pay my thanks. And since I had a very long journey the next morning, it was early indoors and just admiring the beauty of this state. It was a last-minute addition to the Kashmir itinerary, but it was definitely worth it.

Things to do in Sanasar –

The comfort of having a dedicated driver allowed us to sit back, relax, and fully immerse ourselves in the scenic landscapes that unfolded before me. As we cruised along the smooth highways, the picturesque beauty of the countryside and the changing vistas kept us captivated throughout the day.

The journey was made even more enjoyable with stops at charming roadside dhabas, where we savoured delectable local delicacies and refreshed ourselves with hot chai. The seamless travel experience offered by the chauffeured cab allowed us to make the most of our time, ensuring that we reached Delhi in a single day without any hassles or stress. It was a truly convenient and fun-filled road trip experience that left us with lasting memories of the diverse landscapes and the joy of exploring the wonders of India at our own pace. Looking back, I feel like any Kashmir itinerary does not do justice to the beauty of the place.

Embarking on a journey through the enchanting landscapes of Kashmir proved to be a truly unforgettable experience. From the breathtaking valleys of Pahalgam and Pulwama to the adventure-filled destinations of Gulmarg and Sanasar, every step of the Kashmir itinerary offered a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Kanyakumari to Kashmir by road

The idea of doing a Kanyakumari to Kashmir Road Trip (K2K) stuck the duo when they were returning from their trip to Guntur. Having traveled most of the India via bus and other modes of transport, they now wanted to taste the thrill of solo biking!

But to check if they would really be able to do it, they both decided to take a bike trip from Chennai to Kanyakumari first.

Preparing for Kanyakumari to Kashmir road trip

Sundar and Sachin took 6 months to prepare for the trip and during this time, they took scheduled leaves from their office, booked hotels, and reserved their return flight from New Delhi.

‘Our plan was to ride till Kashmir on the bikes and continue the rest of the journey in the car. We planned to send our bikes back home once we were done and return to Chennai via a flight from New Delhi. This was done to fit everything in our restricted timeline.’

Apart from this, the duo picked out the best routes, purchased the right travel equipment and chose the Royal Enfields they wanted to drive. (Thunderbird 500 for Sundar and Bullet 350 for Sachin). They also read a lot of travelogues and travel stories of people who had already done a K2K in the past.

‘One of the most interesting travel accounts that we read were of Roshni Sharma, a female solo biker who accomplished K2K on her own. She was a constant source of inspiration for us.’

The experience

The trip started with Sundar and Sachin , and later they were joined by their other friends from various destinations on their way. Together, all of them covered the following major cities (alphabetical order) – Agra, Bengaluru , Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Gulmarg, Gwalior, Hoshiarpur, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Jhansi, Kanyakumari, Karnal, Kurnool, Madurai, Nagpur, Narsinghpur, New Delhi, Pathankot, and Chennai.

‘This was a life changing trip for all of us. I learned so much about myself during my time on the road. Trusting my instincts, having more patience, and being humble were few good traits that I acquired from many’.

Associating travel as a great teacher of life, Sundar found it to be a perfect source for gaining clarity of thought. According to him, the time he spent focusing on the road was where he was truly living each moment.

‘All my life’s problems seemed small during the journey. Since I was concentrating on what was coming ahead of me, I had all the time to think about what was important. The trivialities were lost and I was able to find answers to questions that mattered. It was absolutely amazing!’

The journey, however, was a tough one for them.

‘From riding in the biting cold weather and fog to escaping accidents to making countless stoppages for bike repairs – we faced them all with courage. There were moments when we were tired and just wanted to go home but we surpassed them all by focusing on the end result – Kanyakumari to Kashmir!’

Citing food and sightseeing as one of the most prominent features of their trip, Sundar said that wherever they went, they witnessed different monuments, cultures, and cuisines.

‘Be it Agra, Delhi, Chandigarh, Hyderabad or the zillion other places that we visited – everything delighted us! We loved the hospitality of the locals!’

‘The moment we reached Kashmir, every one of my friends including me went berserk! This was the time I truly felt like a traveler. The joy and sense of fulfillment cannot be expressed in words! Sachin and I had done the impossible and Kanyakumari to Kashmir was finally a reality!’

How much did the trip cost?

Sharing their cost and expenses during the trip –

‘We spent around 40K per person during the whole journey. The fuel cost came around 10K for the one way trip to Kanyakumari and Kashmir. We spent around 5K on the flight tickets from Delhi to Chennai and it took another 5K to transport our bikes from north to south (Chandigarh to Chennai). The rest 20 K amounted in the day to day activities like food, accommodation and repairs with an average coming out to be approx 1000-1500 per day.’

However, spending 40 K on a tight budget required some planning and both Sundar and Sachin were smart in it. They went for early reservations for both flight and hotels and even stayed at hostels and houses of friends that lived in the passing cities. The food was not a costly affair since they could easily manage good meals between 100-150 per day.

Working hard for what you love

It takes a great deal of courage and self-confidence for non-bikers to do a Kanyakumari to Kashmir journey on a bike.

What started as a fantasy plan for the two – turned real when they became serious about it!

This accomplishment is an example of how we are responsible for our own happiness and can make our life worth living by doing what we love! The passion for traveling that Sundar and Sachin had, overcome all the excuses regarding work, job, finance and even natural disasters (Chennai floods) simply because – they really wanted to do a K2K.

If all of us could apply the same logic and improvise on our plans, life would be full of things we love – be it traveling, dance, or anything that makes us happy.

Kanyakumari to Kashmir - Solo Ride - CBR250R - Leh, Ladakh

Riding solo across country in a motorcycle was always in my bucket list.

India is a vast country, the 7th largest in the world. To ride from the tip of the subcontinent to the edge of the Tibetan Plateau was no easy task. With roads ranging from some of the best you can get in the continent to complete off-road trials, with vast diverse cultures, so many different languages, extreme and harsh whether conditions, a ride of this magnitude can never be pre-planned.

Witnessed more than a few raised eyebrows whenever I discussed about my dream to someone. Most doubted that I might not be able to endure such a long and rough ride. They had their reasons, my lean physique and back injuries due to previous falls, topping their lists. Had to turn a blind eye on all those.

There were many obstacles to be cleared before setting out on my expedition. Convincing mom and dad was the first one. But that turned out to be pretty easy in the end. They were in fact really happy in letting me go. They had their worries and anxieties. Still they were the first who believed that I can do this.Being a guy with zero savings, getting financial for the trip was the next major hurdle. Another issue was getting leaves for such a long period. But all thanks to such generous help from both the Owner and my Manager in Owler ( company I am working in ), even those two issues were sorted out in quick time. They were more than happy to provide me with an advance salary and approving leaves to go chase my dream. Getting the motorcycle ready was the next challenge. Honda service manager near to my place was really excited about the plan and extended all his help. He monitored the service himself in person and got the CBR ready for the long ride.

Once everything was cleared, it was all set to embark on my epic adventure. The ride started on 21st August, 2015 from my home in Kerala. In the next 24 days, the journey took me across 14 different states and a Union territory, travelling close to 7000 kms.

Most of the times, states were crossed at a rate of 1 per day. Kashmir is an exception where close to 10 days were spent, out of which 7 were in Ladakh.

The route travelled was : Kerala - TamilNadu - Karnataka - Andhra - Telangana - Maharashtra - Madhya Pradesh - Rajasthan - Uttar Pradesh - Delhi - Punjab - Jammu and Kashmir - Himachal Pradesh - Chandigarh - Delhi

There can be a lot written about the odyssey. About the adventures faced, the people met, the stories heard, the roads traversed, places camped, foods tasted, the experiences acquired, dangers escaped from, the chances taken, the bliss of riding, the landscapes witnessed, the weathers battled, the history seen, hospitality offered, and lastly but mainly, about my changed outlooks towards life and about people. Maybe I will restrain from writing and keep all those to myself for now.

The diversities of India is so enchanting, that you can see the cultures and landscape changing, literally in front of your eyes. During the journey, the ride took me through :

The rainy south, the cool atmosphere in mid-South, through the harsh and dusty climates of central India, through some hottest cities in the world, to the second coldest inhabited place on Earth ( Drass, Kashmir )

Staying in Hotels, dhabas, home-stays and tents at places with temperatures from 46 degrees ( Nagpur ) to sub-zero temperatures ( -10 degrees at Sarchu )

Oceans in the south, through greeneries of paddy fields, to the deserts of Central India, to the Mountains of North

Looking back, I feel this was one of the best things I have done in my entire life till now. The wind blowing against face, the bike vibrating under weight, the noise filling up ears, the world dark through shades, the sun upon skin, the rebel in me howling – freedom from everything, that I believed tied me down.

This definitely is a journey to reminisce, an adventure to cherish, and an experience that will be enshrined in my heart forever. If there is one decision that I took after this ride, it is to be back travelling as soon as I could, in the very next chance I get.
