Oceania Cruises (oceaniacruises.com) is a Miami -based passenger shipping company operating a fleet of upper-premium, mid-sized vessels. Between April 2007 and September 2014, Oceania was owned by Apollo Management. The company's owner since 2014 is NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) - also the owner of NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Oceania as a cruise line brand offers a luxury product with relatively shorter itineraries but is also well-known for its Around The World voyages lasting up to 180 days.

Since January 2023, Oceania's President and CEO is Frank A. Del Rio (Frank Del Rio Jr/former NCLH's President's son), who succeeded Howard Sherman. The latter succeeded (in January 2022) Bob Binder (Oceania's co-founder, currently NCLH's Vice Chairman). Between 2016-2021, Howard Sherman was NCLH's Executive VP (Onboard Revenue and Destination Services). Oceania's and RSSC-Regent's Presidents both report to NCL's President (currently Harry Sommer).

Company history and changes

The Oceania cruise line was founded in 2002 by travel industry veterans Frank Del Rio (former VP of Renaissance Cruises/1989-2001- defunct ) and Joseph Watters (Independent Director of the brokerage company MarineMax).

Oceania initially chartered the ex-Renaissance vessel "R Two" (from Cruiseinvest), which in October 2002 was renamed Insignia . In April 2003, the boat was 3-month chartered to TRM France (travel agency), and during that period Oceania had no fleet. On June 15, 2003, the company restarted services with 2 vessels - Insignia (renamed Regatta ) and a new vessel (R One, sistership of Regatta, also chartered from Cruiseinvest) that debuted as the current Insignia.

At the end of 2005, a third (ex-Renaissance) vessel entered Oceania's fleet when from CruiseInvest was chartered R-Five (renamed Nautica ). At the naming ceremony, Frank del Rio announced a plan to add a fourth boat ( Marina ) in July 2007. However, this didn't come to pass.

The majority of Oceania's stock was sold in February 2007 to the NYC -based Apollo Management. The next month Oceania made a memorandum agreement with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to construct two 1260-passenger newbuilds . The contract was finalized in June 2007, with delivery dates scheduled for January and July 2011. The contract also included an option for a 3rd unit of the same design/sistership to be delivered in May 2012, but Oceania declined that option.

After being leased out to Hapag-Lloyd (as Columbus 2) for two years, Insignia returned to Oceania in 2014. In May 2014, Oceania and Fincantieri were close to making a deal on two additional ships. On September 2, 2014, NCLH purchased "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (the parent company of Oceania and RSSC-Regent) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

On November 25, 2014, NCLH revealed an agreement with Princess Cruises to purchase Ocean Princess (now Sirena ) for Oceania, upon delivery in March 2016. The ship underwent a 35-day drydock refit (US$40 million) in Marseille France and was renamed "MS Sirena".

In September 2018, Oceania partnered with Luggage Forward (USA-based luggage shipping company). The new service allows passengers to ship their luggage doorstep-to-stateroom (and back home again), thus truly traveling light. Luggage Forward provides premier door-to-door shipping services to 200 countries worldwide (including over 150 cruise ports). The company's own team of Customs specialists handles the country-specific paperwork to ensure on-time deliveries. Travelers can track the shipment in real-time. On June 6, 2022, NCLH announced an expansion of its fleetwide sustainability program "Sail & Sustain". Extending its animal welfare policy, the shipowner is now fully committed to responsible animal food sourcing practices (regarding pork, chicken, eggs, and seafood) within the global fleet's supply chain. The goal is by the year 2025, fleetwide (NCL, Oceania, Regent) to be sourced only cage-free eggs, crate-free pork, certified sustainable seafood, and chicken purchased from American and Canadian suppliers who meet GAP (Global Animal Partnership) standards.

In April 2023, Oceania signed a partnership with the 2014-established premium brand "Chapter 7 Whisky" to create an exclusive 20-year aged Chapter 7 special cask whisky (batch of a total of 304 bottles) to celebrate its 20th anniversary as well as the launch of the Vista ship. The exclusive bottles are available for onboard purchase (via Harding+/part of Harding Retail UK) only during Oceania Vista's inaugural season (2023).

In June 2023 Oceania introduced fleetwide a rare collection of premium vintage wines (80 new labels) from winegrowing regions in France, Italy and Chile. The new collection includes varieties like Moet & Chandon Cuvee Dom Perignon (from Epernay), Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Classe (from Pauillac), Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore (from Tuscany), Vina Errazuriz Kai Carmenere (from Chile's Aconcagua Valley). The rare wines can be tasted at all shipboard restaurants and bars as well as in the staterooms (fleetwide).

In August 2023, Jason Worth was appointed VP of International Sales (newly created position) who reports to Nikki Upshaw (Oceania's Senior VP of Global Sales since 2011, in 2001-2011 employed as Director of Global Sales and Marketing for ResidenSea The World . Jason Worth is with Oceania since 2011, and in the period 2019-22 served as VP of Sales for Australia and New Zealand.

All Oceania-operated ships are currently Marshall Islands - flagged and registered in Majuro .

On January 8, 2019, Oceania's parent company NCLH announced a shipbuilding order with Fincantieri for two units planned for Oceania. Both vessels are of the new ALLURA-Class - the next stage of the fleet expansion project OceaniaNEXT. The new boats are designed and built by Fincantieri (in Ancona Italy ), with scheduled deliveries in 2023 ( Vista ) and 2025 ( Allura ).

Each of the 67000 GT-ton ALLURA-Class vessels (Vista, and Allura) has max capacity 1470 passengers plus 800 staff/crew. These are mid-sized ships similar in design and amenities to Oceania's 2011-2012-built Riviera and Marina .

The contract price for each of the newbuilds is ~EUR 575 million (per unit). NCLH obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the total contract price, subject to certain Italian government approvals.

As of 2019, NCLH had 10 ship orders with planned deliveries thru 2027. Of those, 7x units were for NCL-Norwegian, 2x for Oceania, 1x for RSSC-Regent.

Cruising experience

The Oceania cruise line serves the industry's upper-premium market, and as a brand is positioned between its luxury and premium segments. The shipboard experience is country club-like, the atmosphere is elegant and relaxed, never formal or stuffy. Giada De Laurentiis is also Oceania Vista ship's godmother.

Oceania ships serve an extensive vegan menu and offer smoothie bars with cold-pressed raw juices at Lido Deck.

Pool Deck's raw juice and smoothie bar serve a variety of healthy drinks - like cold brew lattes, green smoothies, chia cashew yogurt bowl, acai berry bowl. Oceania's new vegan menu has over 250 dishes and is featured in Main Dining Rooms of all ships. It includes appetizers, salads, soups, entrees, and desserts. Vegetarian, kosher and gluten-free meals are also offered.

The vegan menu has 5 dishes and 4 sides offered at each breakfast, such as Spanish tortilla dish (tofu, potatoes, onions), vanilla waffles (fresh berries), cream of wheat or oatmeal, apricot and pistachio muffins, sides (Lyonnaise potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, vegan sausage). At lunch are offered Italian salad (assorted greens), Tuscan-style bean soup, toasted garlic bread, spinach-stuffed involtini (with pasta and tapenade sauce), tofu, chocolate ricotta pie. The dinner menu is 5-course and include truffle-flavored parsnip soup, quinoa salad, vegetable tartare, Thai red curry with rice, shortbread dessert (strawberries, passion fruit cream).

OceaniaNEXT ship refurbishments (fleet-renovation project)

In August 2018 was announced OceaniaNEXT fleet renovation project budgeted USD 100 million. It includes drydock refurbishments of all four R-Class liners - Regatta (September 2019), Insignia (December 2018), Sirena (May 2019) and Nautica (June 2020).

As supervision company for the project was contracted Studio DADO Inc (Miami-based designer firm). Other contractors include Baker and Donghia (furnishings), and Rubelli and Kravet (fabrics, custom-made carpets). As result, the fleet was expanded with 1368 new staterooms, and all shipboard restaurants, bars, and lounges will be redesigned and redecorated. New public spaces on these ships include open-floor designed Lobby with Reception Hall (lower level) with Upper Hall (2nd level). They are connected with Grand Staircase (decorated with railings and balustrades) and featuring a large crystal chandelier (with hanging pieces of hand-painted glass).

Grand Dining Room (aft restaurant on Deck 5) on each ship received new premium dining furniture (leather chairs with metallic bronze threading) and new crystal chandelier. Martinis (piano bar lounge on Deck 5) was redesigned, new silver-white marble bar top and walnut paneling were added.

All staterooms were completely overhauled (redesigned and re-furnished) and upgraded with custom-made furniture, polished wood, stone finishes, designer accessories, smart HDTVs (infotainment system with movies-on-demand and Internet), USB ports, LED lighting. All cabin bathrooms were overhauled and received new tiling, surfaces, fixtures, designer accessories, vanities, glass shower enclosures. Penthouse-Vista-Owner suite bathrooms were enlarged and upgraded with Carrara marble tops, onyx, polished granite.

Works on the fleetwide refurb project involved over 1000 artisans and craftsmen and resulted in 1368 new cabins, 8000 new light fixtures, 12000 new sofas and chairs.

In September 2018, as part of OceaniaNEXT program, the company's website was redesigned and upgraded. Now customers (travel agents and cruise passengers) can use shipboard credits before departure. OBC can be used for purchasing tours/excursions and shipboard activities and amenities (culinary classes, drink packages, specialty dining at the Privee and La Reserve).

As part of OceaniaNEXT, on January 31, 2019, the company announced its partnership with Vero Water (eco-friendly bottled water supplier) to eliminate plastic water bottles fleetwide. In the period April-June 2019, all Oceania liners were outfitted with Vero Water systems eliminating around 3 million plastic bottles annually. By 2020, all Oceania cruise customers are provided complimentary with re-useable Vero Water bottles (Oceania-branded, 1 per person) to be used ashore and after the voyage to take home as a souvenir. The new water bottles will be available on each ship since April 2, 2019 (Riviera), April 19, 2019 (Marina), May 1, 2019 (Regatta), May 19, 2019 (Sirena), May 30, 2019 (Nautica), and June 19, 2019 (Insignia).

In May 2019, by the OceaniaNEXT program were introduced fleetwide 200+ plant-based dining menus. The new items are available (upon request) in "Grand Dining Room" and "Terrace Cafe" at breakfast-lunch-dinner, and also dinner-only in all specialty restaurants.

• Breakfast items include Banana-Oatmeal Pancakes, Muesli with Pistachios, Avocado Toast on Rustic Bread.
• Lunch items include Chilled Melon Soup, Korean Kimchi Soup, Wakame-Sesame Salad, Poke Bowl, Penne au Pistou.

In 2019, Oceania's new website has greatly improved navigation via groups of 4 tabs (at page top) - "Plan Your Cruise", "Onboard Experiences", "Explore Ashore" and "Ultimate Value". The website's "Travel Agent Center" was also updated (marketing tools, tips, and training, travel advisor benefits). Oceania also launched new pre-cruise savings program, allowing customers booking within 30-days prior departure to receive in advance savings and "Best Price Guarantee". Repeat travel agency bookings are credited back automatically.

Wavenet (free, high-speed Internet) fleetwide

In April 2018, Oceania Cruises introduced the Wavenet (high-speed internet) fleetwide / on all ships. The service allows faster uploading/downloading of big files, watching Netflix movies, social media sharing, music, and video live streaming (Spotify Facetime, Skype).

Oceania's new Wavenet Internet service is free of charge and unlimited. As for amenities, it is included in the ticket prices for all staterooms (suite and cabin categories) and on all itineraries.

The "Wavenet Prime" (Internet upgrade) is available for purchase at USD 10 pp per day. It allows passengers to stream music, videos, movies.

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, NCLH's entire fleet (all vessels of the brands NCL-Norwegian, RSSC-Regent and Oceania) is with an expanded cancellation policy. All bookings on pre-scheduled itineraries (departures March 15, 2020, through May 31, 2021) were given the option to cancel (up to 48 hours prior departure) without penalties.

Eventually, NCLH canceled all Oceania cruise itineraries leaving between March 14, 2020, and September 2021.

Operations resumed in 2021-2022 with the ships MARINA (August 29, 2021/Europe-Baltic from Copenhagen), REGATTA (March 7, 2022/French Polynesia from Papeete Tahiti), NAUTICA (February 24, 2022/Southeast Asia from Singapore), RIVIERA (Oct 18, 2021/Europe-Mediterranean from Istanbul), INSIGNIA (January 6, 2022/World Cruise from Los Angeles), SIRENA (March 29, 2022/Transatlantic from Bridgetown Barbados to Barcelona).

• All affected bookings received a full refund (100%) transferred as FCC (future cruise credit) with rebooking made within 1 year (any itinerary, fleetwide) departing between March 17, 2020, and December 31, 2022.
• In early-May 2020, Oceania Cruises launched "The Ultimate Sale" promotion, with significant booking price reductions (~70% lower than the brand's regular rates). Promo's fares per person started at USD 999 (inside cabin) and USD 1399 (balcony cabin).

NAUTICA's program for 2021-2022 (fall-Mediterranean, winter-spring-Asia) was canceled. The ship restarts operations in April 2022 (Mediterranean-Europe) following an extensive drydock refurbishment.

After the 43-day Transatlantic crossing from Europe to North America (August 27th, from Civitavecchia-Rome to NYC) starts the mini-season in Canada and New England, followed by the winter 2025-2026 Caribbean season. In the Caribbean, Allura is homeported in Miami (starting December 21st, 2025) and visits destinations like The Netherlads' ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Dominica, Antigua, St Maarten.

In September 2022 were announced World and Grand Voyages for 2025. The "Around the World in 180 Days" voyage for 2025 is an east-to-west itinerary. Oceania also introduced 7x Grand Voyages (ranging between 50-111 days), including the 111-day expedition across the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe-Mediterranean.

(December 22, 2024 - March 6, 2025) "The Ultimate Odyssey" (74 days, 2 ships, 5 countries, 3 continents) starts with a 50-day circumnavigation of Indonesia-Australia-New Zealand (roundtrip from Sydney NSW ). The itinerary visits South America (Antarctica, Patagonia/Chilean Fjords ). Linking the 2 extraordinary voyages are 2 overland tours that passengers will get to choose from - 6 days in the Blue Mountains of Australia/6 days in the Andean Lakes District of Chile and Argentina. The journey stretches to Ushuaia Argentina , Antarctica and Patagonia.

(January 5, 2025 - July 3, 2025) The "Around The World in 180 Days" voyage visits 89 ports in 32 countries (5 continents). Leaving from PortMiami, Oceania Insignia heads south to Brazil's Amazon before crossing the Atlantic for Africa. En route to South Africa, the Atlantic crossing visits Tristan da Cunha . Insignia then continues to Asia visiting Indian Ocean islands (French Comoros, Seychelles, Maldives), Southeast Asia's Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan. Follows cruising along Western Australia's coast, the South Pacific islands (Vanuatu, French Polynesia), then north to the Hawaiian Islands to conclude the global journey.

New shore excursions and land tours

In mid-November 2018, Oceania introduced 86x pre-, post-, and mid-cruise land tours in Asia, Australia, Africa, Egypt and Holy Land, South America, Europe, Canada, and Alaska. Ranging from 1 to 5 nights in length, the new excursions options offer overnights in metropolises, overland explorations in Southeast Asia, luxury safaris in premium private reserves in Africa, the Italian and Swiss Alps, the Arabian Desert, even expeditions to the Himalayan Mountains (Mount Everest and Kathmandu). Program's highlights include:

• "The Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal and Mount Everest" is a 4-night expedition centering on Mumbai and Kathmandu. It includes flightseeing over Mt Everest and visits to Bhadgaon City, Bodhnath Stupa, Pashupatinath, Patan, visiting a Tibetan monastery, evening prayer ritual, and private audience at the Living Goddess.
• "Taj Mahal: Eternal Masterpiece" is available with 2- and 3-night packages. Tour's highlights include visits to Agra Fort and Itmad-Ud-Daulah, Kathak dance performance (at the hotel in Agra).
• "Luxury Safari: White Elephant Safari Lodge" is an overnight at White Elephant Lodge and features guided nature walks, 2 game drives, afternoon tea, sundowners, dusk birdwatching or Lake Jozini boat cruise.
• "Luxury Safari: Belmond Eagle Island Lodge" in Okavango Delta offers game drives and wildlife viewing (hippos, elephants, crocodiles, big cats). The luxury lodge is included with 2 overnights, plus 2 overnights (in Johannesburg and Cape Town ).
• "Glaciers, Lagoons, and Waterfalls" is an Iceland tour visiting Langjokull Glacier's ice cave, ice-walk at Solheimajokull, Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls, Deildartunguhver's hot springs, Blue Lagoon bathing. There is also a culinary tour of Reykjavik and overnights in Husafell and Stracta.
• "Royal London and The English Countryside" combines historic London with England's countryside (Cotswolds, Burford, Bibury). The 3-night tour visits Tower of London, viewing of Crown Jewels along with Changing of the Guard and Thames River cruise.
• "Rome and Tivoli Treasures" is a 3-night tour in Rome, plus an insider tour with private access to Vatican Museum and St Peter’s Basilica, plus Tivoli and Villa D'Este.
• "Canadian Rockies by Rocky Mountaineer" are exclusive tours of Sulphur Mountain, Banff, and Vancouver . Rocky Mountaineer is the world's largest private train. Along the way, Oceania cruise tourists enjoy Silver Leaf Service with gourmet meals and snacks.

Oceania Cruises to Cuba

In December 2016, the company's owner NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) received permission to operate cruises to Cuba, with two Oceania ships - Marina (starting at the end of 2016) and Regatta (starting in 2017). Cuba currently lacks the infrastructure to support large cruise ships, so the 684-passenger Regatta and 1,258-passenger Marina are small enough to work with what exists there now. Both ships sail a variety of itineraries, including a circumnavigation of Cuba (with stops in Cienfuegos and Havana) and visiting Cuba as part of some Panama Canal transition cruises .

The company offers a number of departures from PortMiami in 2019, including the “Timeless Cuba” itinerary, sailing 7 days with visits to Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos. A twice-offered 10-day cruise adds a visit to Great Stirrup Cay.

• Lindblad Expeditions (chartered sailing ship MS Panorama II, leaving from Havana)
• Celestyal Cruises (ship Celestyal Crystal , leaving from Havana and Montego Bay Jamaica)
• Grand Circle Cruise Line (ship MV Clio / ex Tere Moana ) one-way from Miami to Havana, or the reverse from Havana to Miami (embarkation/disembarkation in port Cienfuegos ).
• International Expeditions (leaving from Havana, charter flights out of Miami)
• Victory Cruise Lines - MS Victory I - fly-cruises from Miami to Havana (homeport Cienfuegos /departures)

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government to allow ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

IMPORTANT: On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately. The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports.

Manhattan New York Cruise Terminal Information

Situated on the west side of Manhattan, the cruise terminal offers breathtaking views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Explore the vibrant neighborhoods, world-class museums, and renowned landmarks of Manhattan before embarking on your cruise adventure.

The Manhattan cruise terminal is one of two cruise terminals that make up the Port of New York.

The Manhattan terminal (Piers 88 and 90) is one of the busiest in North America and has recently undergone $200 million dollars in state-of-the -art renovations. It is in the process of upgrading to be able to accommodate the world’s largest ships .

The Manhattan terminal is located at 711 12th Avenue. If driving, note that all cars enter the terminal from the north at the intersection of 55th St. and State Route 9A (12th Ave) . You will see directional signs directing toward the “Ship Terminal.” Also, there is no ability to drop off luggage prior to parking. See here for detailed parking information.

When arriving, you will be at street level, and need to take an elevator or escalator to reach Customs and check-in.  Signs will be posted on pillars identifying which ship is docked at which berth.

The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is one of the most active cruise ports in the United States, servicing cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney , Silversea and Holland America. When arriving, signs will be posted to inform which ship is at which berth.

New York Weather

In New York, temperatures hit their peak in July and August, with humidity reaching up to 90 percent. There aren’t usually any snowstorms to worry about until December due to the city’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Mild and pleasant summers are typical for the rest of the state. Keep in mind that winters can be very cold especially upstate, and there may be heavy snow and ice until well into May.

I have read that Oceania leaves from both Brooklyn and Manhattan ports. Does anyone know for sure? I am checking out nearby pre-cruise hotels.

I don't ever recall them using Brooklyn but that's not to say they won't in the future. As was suggested have your TA call Oceania.

Also, check port authority schedule. 

We have sailed out of New York twice, both times from  Manhattan. Once to Bermuda and the other time to New England. Larger ships usually sail from Brooklyn like Cunard.

There was 1 instance of O using Brooklyn, about 5 years ago.  It was caused by port congestion I believe.  There was also an instance of O using Boston for NY, it was due to Sandy. 

Our cruise isn't until next summer, so there's lots of time. The TA company we used says Brooklyn, but this site says Manhattan.

Until  the CDC gives the OK to cruise lines  I would make sure your arrangements are refundable

If you go to the Port Authority website you're just going to be told to go to the NY cruise port site because the cruise terminals, although part of the Port of NY, are managed by a different agency, NYCEDC, the NY City Economic Development Corporation . The direct link to the cruise terminal website is  https://www.nycruise.com/  .

Also, I believe we have a 4 months prior in which to cancel for a full refund. Our cruise is July '22 so I would hope by March that we have a more positive outlook for cruising.

I remember our dearly departed Stan aka Stan&Jim talking about sailing out of Brooklyn. A lot of those posts were seriously dated however and one never knew of which decade ( or Century) of which he was referring. Seems in the present era Oceania predominantly goes out of Manhattan. As sailing draws nearer your TA will be the best choice of information.

Jim is the cruising expert who passed away. We only began sailing in 2008 and indeed sailed with him in this century. I learned a great deal of information from Jim and the late Don Horner on this board.

We sailed out of Manhattan for our last Bermuda cruise, but were supposed to sail out of Brooklyn for our cancelled July 2021 cruise.

Not really based on the ship size. I think it just depends on which cruise lines.

Manhattan: NCLH (NCL + Oceania + Regent) and Carnival Cruise Lines

Bayonne: RCG (Royal Caribbean + Celebrity)

unless there are berth conflicts, then they may rarely move to other ports.

NCL uses Pier 88. I personally love sailing out of there. Easy to get to, parking is a breeze

Personally i prefer Bayonne because parking is cheaper and the easiest to get to, Manhattan second (not much harder to get to but parking is more expensive.  Brooklyn is just a pain.

Manhattan is probably better if you do not have a car. 

We will either fly into La Guardia, or do the seven hour drive. In the past we have parked at the ferry parking garage in Weehawken and hopped a ferry into Manhatten. Cheaper and less stress. 

We are very excited about trying Oceania. Our experience has always been on mega ships, so this will be a nice change! Hopefully, it won't be rough sailing!

There was an instance a year or two ago (before Covid) where a last minute change happened with an O ship where suddenly the ship was leaving from Brooklyn.  There were people boarding who had NOT been informed.  I do think everyone got there in time.

But in general, I agree that the ships leave from Manhattan. Still, it's a good idea to check at the last minute. You never know. Whenever we have left from NYC (or arrived here) we've been at the Manhattan port.

Since we live nearby the Brooklyn port we wouldn't mind boarding or leaving from there but it's never happened ...

This is our first Oceania cruise also.  We will probably take the train from Ottawa to Montreal, then to New York.  Seems like a relaxing way to start the trip.

We sailed from Manhattan on a Regent color cruise in 2016. What was neat is the ship was docked within walking distance of the USS Intrepid Air Museum. After dropping the bags and a spot of lunch, we spent the afternoon visiting it. Well worth it if time and weather permit.

I really hope our Oceania cruise scheduled for September 2022 boarding in New York sails out of Manhattan.

We sailed from Manhattan 2 years ago on an Azamara cruise & the experience was spectacular. I don't think we could ever not be thrilled by the sights sailing so close to the Statue of Liberty, skyscrapers, and under the bridge.

Last week, Travel Media and Agents and VIP Past Passengers boarded Oceania’s spectacular “VISTA” docked at New York’s Passenger Ship Terminal. She is the first “ALLURA”-class ship for Oceania and will quickly be joined by her almost-identical twin, ALLURA herself. “VISTA” joined a fleet that now numbers seven luxury ships that sail to more than 600 ports in over 100 countries on all 7 continents. “VISTA”s Maiden Call was a cause for celebration aboard a ship that prides itself as having The Finest Cuisine At Sea. But before we get to that, here’s what to know about this brand-new ship launched just last May.

“VISTA” IS THE FIRST OF OCEANIA’S NEW ALLURA CLASS VESSEL

At 791 feet long and just over 67,000 tons, “VISTA” can entertain 1200 passengers at double occupancy. To serve those passengers there are no fewer than 800 crew members. That’s two crewmembers for every three passengers virtually guaranteeing great service. If the ship seems ‘big’, she does so compared to the four identical ships that launched the line—Nautica, Insignia, Sirena and Regatta. Once aboard, it’s immediately apparent that “VISTA”’s size is not about how many passengers “VISTA” carries, but an indication of how much space there is aboard this ship. And a lot of that space is given over to a phenomenal range of accommodations.

“VISTA” BOASTS THE MOST SPACIOUS STANDARD STATEROOMS AT SEA

That day, every Oceania guest was invited to “sleepover”.  I was assigned a Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom on deck 9.  Aboard “VISTA” every single stateroom has a veranda– even those set aside for solo passengers.  First impression: Comfort and calm, truly beautifully put together. Even the throw pillows on the sofa were beautifully crafted.  And all the bells and whistles were in place—from makeup mirrors to marble shower, from stocked mini fridge to flat-screen television with dozens of entertainment options.  Into our schedule were cabin tours to see VISTA’s range of accommodations.  Of particular interest were the Oceania Suites on Deck 12. I can’t remember ever seeing a separate glass-walled study cum guest studio with its own guest bathroom integrated into any suite on any ship. The belle of them all is the Owner’s Suite. When your godmother is none other than Giada De Laurentis, of Emmy award-winning fame and your menus are influenced by none other than America’s favorite French Chef, Jacques Pepin, you’ve got a head start. Aboard “VISTA” There are no fewer than 11 onboard restaurants—including three introduced on “VISTA” and new to Oceania. The Bakery at Baristas on the Pool Deck serves likely the best chicken salad ‘slider’ on brioche I’ve ever eaten and pastries that are made before your eyes. There’s Ember which prides on American cuisine. And there’s Aquamar Kitchen which offers wellness-inspired dishes (if you must…) and promises “a hint of indulgence”. Of the 8 other choices, I have to make mention of the Dining venue that gives away VISTA’s luxury credentials.  It’s the Terrace Café. For those of us with experience with “all-day’ dining venues, this one wins hands-down not only for its food but also for its style both indoors and on its outdoor deck.

Sunday’s Main Event was held in the spectacular Grand Dining Room which more than lives up to its name. This chandeliered space is broken up into more intimate spaces. And then there’s the food. It’s simply wonderful. At a table for 8, 6 of us opted for both Caviar and Lobster while the sommelier poured excellent wines and generously. The Culinary piece-de-resistance has to be the 24-station Culinary Center. Offering hands-on cooking classes and a variety of immersive culinary experiences, it’s part of Oceania’s mission to see the world “through a lens of food and cooking” wherever “VISTA” sails. And when she does, “VISTA” extends the adventure in eating on its chef-led “Culinary Discover Tours” ashore.

AND BECAUSE IT’S IN NEW YORK, “VISTA” CAPPED THE EVENING WITH A SHOW

Choreographed by none other than “Dancing with the Stars” own Britt Stewart, “ Headliners ” was performed by the onboard vocalists and dancers. Performing music made famous by Cher, Celine Dion and the Bee Gees. And just to prove songs have been written after 1968, Adele made the cut. “ Headliners ” is one of three shows Britt Stewart has orchestrated for “VISTA,” “ Into the Night ” and “ The Anchor Inn ” take guests on a musical carpet ride nightly.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

For a Panama Canal experience that begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Cruises ' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean itinerary is a great option. There's still time to book the Dec. 2, 2024, cruise or the half-dozen almost identical sailings that follow through April 2025. All sailings are aboard the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and visit Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendjik, Bonaire; and George Town, Grand Cayman (Willemstad, Curacao, replaces Grand Cayman on some 2025 sailings).

Windstar Cruises' 7-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal cruise

To explore the Panama Canal region in a relaxed manner aboard an intimate motorized sailing yacht or small ship, check out Windstar Cruises' seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal itinerary. Bookable on more than a dozen dates from November 2024 through March 2026, the itinerary is offered aboard 148-passenger Wind Star or Wind Spirit (in 2024 and 2025) and 312-passenger Star Pride (in 2026). The ship will travel from Colon, Panama, to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (or vice versa), transiting the canal. Passengers can visit Panama City and Isla Parida in Panama, plus Golfo Dolce and Quepos (for Manuel Antonio National Park) in Costa Rica.

Carnival Cruise Line 's eight-night Panama Canal from Tampa itinerary offers a round-trip, partial-transit sailing aboard the 2,124-passenger Carnival Legend and Carnival Miracle. What's more, you can choose between two ships: the 3,140-guest Caribbean Princess or the 3,080-guest Emerald Princess. In addition to the partial transit, these sailings call on several Caribbean islands, including Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica and Grand Cayman, as well as Cartagena, Columbia; Limon, Costa Rica; and Colon, Panama.

There's no "Panama Canal" in this itinerary's name, but Norwegian Cruise Line 's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise (Feb. 27-March 11, 2026) does a full canal transit as it sails from Miami to Lima, Peru. The 2,402-passenger Norwegian Jade will visit historic Santa Marta and Cartagena in Colombia; Panama City; Manta, Ecuador; and Trujillo and Lima in Peru.

Who should go : Couples and friends interested in experiencing not just a Panama Canal transit but some of the top coastal experiences along the Pacific coast of South America should choose this itinerary. Norwegian Jade is an older, smaller vessel that was refurbished in 2022 and features a top deck more conducive to sunning than thrill rides. The ship also has a surprising number of restaurants for its size: two main dining rooms, a buffet restaurant, a pub-style bar and grill, an Asian restaurant and an outdoor grill on a complimentary basis, plus six specialty dining venues (including a steakhouse and venues showcasing French, Italian and Japanese cuisines) for an added fee.

Oceania's 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles cruise

Oceania Cruises ' 1,200-passenger Vista — which debuted in May 2023 as the first new-build ship in Oceania's fleet in more than a decade — will offer back-to-back, 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Jan. 8-24, 2025) and Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 24-Feb. 9, 2025) itineraries. Both sailings visit six countries with port calls that include George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico. (The second sailing visits San Diego instead of Ensenada.)

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) A more immersive mixology program features curated cocktail menus, indulgent pairing experiences and specialty beverage carts.

Cunard's 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco cruise

Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). The ship will first cross the Atlantic and then overnight in New York before calling on Aruba, transiting the canal and visiting Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It will conclude with an overnight in San Francisco.

The winter transatlantic crossing might not be right for everyone, but the second half of this voyage explores warm-weather destinations with plenty of relaxing sea days for sunning, reading, taking dance lessons and enjoying expert lectures.

Who should go : British cruise line Cunard appeals mainly to older travelers who savor the line's formal traditions. This cruise is for you if you enjoy afternoon tea, dressing up for dinner, gala evenings and dancing to big-band orchestras. This particular itinerary appeals to retirees who wish to visit several cruise regions in one sailing.

Viking's 180-day World Voyage

For the ultimate cruise indulgence, Viking's 180-day World Voyage I includes a Panama Canal transit (on Christmas Day, no less) as 930-passenger Viking Sky cruises from Fort Lauderdale to New York City (Dec. 19, 2024-June 17, 2025). This round-the-world cruise will visit 37 countries as guests enjoy Viking Sky's modern Scandinavian interior decor, soothing LivNordic Spa, two pools (including one with a retractable roof) and six onboard restaurants. Pricing includes airfare, gratuities and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

If this longer voyage is sold out, consider the 138-day Viking World Cruise (departing Dec. 19, 2025), also on Viking Sky. This sailing, which travels from Fort Lauderdale to London (Greenwich), visits 28 countries and transits the Panama Canal on the eighth day.

If you have any degree of interest in traveling or cruising, chances are you've heard the buzz around Icon of the Seas. Another record-breaking ship by Royal Caribbean International , Icon of the Seas debuted on Jan. 27, 2024, as the largest cruise ship in the world. It is epic in every sense, featuring 18 cruiser-accessible decks and stretching 1,196 feet from bow to stern.

With greatest-of-all-time soccer player Lionel Messi as the ship's godfather, the Icon of the Seas is truly iconic. Messi brought the entire Inter Miami team along for the opening ceremony and the big reveal of the team's new Royal Caribbean-sponsored jerseys. I was fortunate enough to attend this star-studded ceremony as part of the press preview sailing in the days leading up to the ship's grand debut to the public. It was everything I thought it would be and more, and nobody could have been more appropriate than Messi to send this ship on her maiden voyage.

Boarding a ship of this size can seem overwhelming, but not when you understand the layout. Icon of the Seas is broken up into eight distinct neighborhoods: AquaDome, Central Park, Thrill Island, Chill Island, Royal Promenade, The Hideaway, Suite Neighborhood and Surfside, a neighborhood built for young families looking for nonstop fun and kid-approved eats and treats.

In addition to these public areas, there are 2,805 staterooms spread across 12 decks. Icon of the Seas' capacity maxes out at 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, but with the plethora of public spaces and variety of things to do and see, you can choose your own adventure without encountering more crowds than you want to.

During its inaugural 2024-2025 cruising season, Icon of the Seas offers seven-night eastern or western Caribbean adventures from Miami, stopping at a variety of tropical destinations. All sailings include a stop at Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas . Other destinations include Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis ; Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico .

During the 2025-2026 cruising season, new destinations will include Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Labadee, Haiti; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (part of the U.S. Virgin Islands ). All sailings will originate from Miami.

No matter your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you'll visit beautiful places – but you can expect to feel torn about spending any time off the ship, because it's just that jampacked with things to do.

Who should sail on Icon of the Seas?

Icon of the Seas appeals not so much to a demographic as to a psychographic; you're going to need to be someone who likes to live life in all caps. Royal Caribbean set out to create "the world's best vacation" contained on a ship, so Icon of the Seas is for anyone who would enjoy the combination of a beach trip, a resort stay, a water park adventure and island-hopping.

Fun-loving travelers and families with kids of varying ages will do best on this ship; it feels a little bit like Disney World with over-the-top everything and a truly massive sprawl. Older travelers who prefer a more quiet, refined experience may want to opt for a less kid-friendly ship. Still, even couples without children will find plenty of fun adult-friendly things to do and romantic places to tuck in.

The Royal Promenade can be quite loud and buzzy, but simply relocating to another onboard neighborhood can completely shift the vibe. Also, keep in mind that the ship really is huge, and walking from end to end can be a hike, so those with limited mobility or endurance might want to look into a smaller ship.

Icon of the Seas prices are high in its opening season, but cruisers with big dreams and small budgets can expect rates to drop by the time the next ship in the series debuts.

The stateroom

With a ship this overstimulating, it's imperative that your stateroom is a haven. Luckily, Icon of the Seas offers peaceful rooms, many of which feature ocean or Central Park neighborhood views. Cruise ship accommodations are stereotypically compact – even cramped – but the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in Icon of the Seas' cabins (with the exception of the windowless interior rooms) lend an airy, open feel. The cabin layouts are also optimized to provide the maximum amount of storage, floor space and comfort.

Stateroom decor is mildly nautical- and tropical-themed, with calming hues that mimic the scenery outside your window (think blues, beiges and whites). High-tech elements include smart TVs, LED mirrors and the ability to control many aspects of your room from an app.

My husband and I stayed in an Ocean View Large Balcony Stateroom, a 204-square-foot refuge from the hustle and bustle of the ship (the balcony adds another 65 to 70 square feet). This room type can sleep up to four people with a sofa bed for one or two; the room also features twin beds that convert to a king bed for couples.

My husband is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and we were comfortable in our room, even though our quarters included a large bed, a bathroom, a sofa and a desk. We loved sitting on our private balcony and watching the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean flow by.

If money is no object, the Ultimate Family Townhouse – an over-the-top eight-guest, three-story pad with a private whirlpool on the balcony, three bathrooms, a slide that connects the second and main levels, an in-suite cinema, a dining room and a kitchenette – looks epic. But keep in mind, it costs nearly $100,000 for the week.

The Sunset Corner Suites (about one-fifth of the cost of the Ultimate Family Townhouse, but still expensive) are also pretty sweet, with a wraparound balcony and a bed facing the sea.

Luckily, not all rooms break the bank; with four main stateroom categories (suite, balcony, ocean view and inside) and 28 subcategories, there's something for everyone.

Best amenities on Icon of the Seas

It's almost impossible to run out of things to do aboard Icon of the Seas.

For thrill-seekers, the largest water park at sea – Category 6 – features the Frightening Bolt (the tallest waterslide on a ship) and the Pressure Drop (the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise vessel).

If you've tired of the seven swimming pools, six waterslides, laser tag, mini-golf, rock climbing wall, escape room, sports courts, outdoor decks, theater, spa and all-day programming, simply take a stroll down the Royal Promenade for Las Vegas -style people-watching. The Royal Promenade has 15 restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as a Starbucks that seems to have a line no matter what time you go. The neighborhood feels a bit like a shopping mall … if a shopping mall had floor-to-ceiling ocean views made possible by the world's largest kinetic art sculpture.

The Pearl, a feat of engineering, is one of the most unique aspects of the ship's design. This art piece is actually a load-bearing structure supporting three decks, but it looks and feels like an interactive art experience designed solely for the enjoyment of guests. The multisensory immersive structure has 3,000 kinetic panels and moody ever-changing lighting. It is one of the first things guests will see when they walk on board, as it stretches from the Royal Promenade up to Central Park.

My husband and I spent most of our time at the FlowRider surf simulator – his favorite amenity – but we made sure to leave time for Taylor Swift trivia at Spotlight Karaoke and the superhuman stunts of the Aqua Theater show, a must on any Icon of the Seas voyage. The ship even has a massive ice arena called Absolute Zero for ice skating (the 20-minute sessions are complimentary) and impressive shows.

We also loved lounging in The Overlook Bar & Pods, an area at the very front of the ship (behind the AquaDome) that features two levels of floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. It felt airy and open, which can't be said about many cruise ship interiors.

Best dining venues on Icon of the Seas

There are more dining options aboard Icon of the Seas than you can fit in on a seven-night cruise – but you can give it the old college try. Thirteen of the dining venues are complimentary, while 14 are specialty restaurants (which cost extra; fees vary). There are also 18 bars and lounges.

The best meal we experienced on the ship was at the Chops Grille specialty eatery. When we spotted Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty and a group of bigwigs at a table next to us, we knew we were in the right place. We loved sitting outside and enjoying the breezes of Central Park while we chowed down, but you can eat indoors for an elegant steakhouse experience and a view of the open kitchen and butcher's display, which shows off specialty cuts like high-grade wagyu and bone-in tomahawks.

While I'd never turn down a swanky steak dinner, grabbing quick poolside bites at El Loco Fresh and indulging in some food hall-style grazing at AquaDome Market were equally enjoyable. We also had no complaints eating several meals at Windjammer, the classic complimentary cruise ship buffet.

Even though we don't have children, we stopped into Surfside Bites for a very kid-friendly meal, complete with soft serve ice cream cones from Sprinkles (because no cruise is complete without soft serve). We didn't try anything from the open-air, lemonade stand-inspired Lemon Post bar, but its menu of cocktails and mocktails looked delicious.

And since you're on vacation, be sure to check out the milkshake bar Desserted, where the sugary creations are as photo-worthy as they are decadent. They're worth the upcharge.

Best excursions on Icon of the Seas

Depending on what's on your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you may be able to book activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, tropical jungle adventures, visits to Mayan ruins, volcano hikes, rainforest zip lining, relaxing beach days or cultural immersion tours.

Note that Royal Caribbean features the same options on many of its other Caribbean cruises; none of the excursions on offer are exclusive to Icon of the Seas.

Because our press preview sailing only visited Perfect Day at CocoCay, we did not experience any of the shore excursions. Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas was plenty of fun, even though we didn't plan anything in advance.

If we had made plans, we would have liked to check out the Up, Up and Away tethered hot air balloon, which wasn't running that day, and the overwater cabanas at Coco Beach Club, which were all booked. Thrill Waterpark (which features the tallest waterslide in North America), Oasis Lagoon (the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean) and the adults-only Hideaway Beach are other highlights of Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Overall impressions of Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean seems to be focused on superlatives. It has the biggest, best, tallest, largest and most of everything – especially when it comes to Icon of the Seas. If you like jampacked, adventurous vacations that squeeze a lot of adventure and relaxation into one memorable week, Icon of the Seas is probably for you.

While I love seeing Royal Caribbean push the limits of what cruises can be, the ship may almost be too big for some. It's an all-out Vegas-esque vessel that feels more like a floating city; you will probably forget (more than once) that you're not on dry land.

That's not necessarily a bad thing – if Icon of the Seas looks fun to you, it probably will be – but my husband and I tend to gravitate more toward authentic, immersive, on-the-ground cultural experiences when we travel. While Icon of the Seas is a lot of things, it's not that. We had a fantastic time and have already started planning a future Royal Caribbean cruise with a group of friends and family, but we also sympathize with the anticruisers of the world. Vacationing does not a traveler make.

Still, the shows are entertaining, the service is attentive, the music is jamming, and the architecture and design are incredibly impressive. I have no real complaints and suspect that most cruisers will have the time of their lives on Icon of the Seas – exactly as the minds at Royal Caribbean envisioned when they dreamed up this iconic ship.
