Teotihuacán Hot Air Balloon Ride from Mexico City + Tickets

  • 9.20 / 10 975 reviews | 13,732 travellers An incredible activity and highly recommended! Everyone was very attentive and explained everything perfectly. The only thing I didn't like very much was that they didn't tell you that there were activities (tour of the pyramids) that they charge you for afterwards. I recommend that you find out well when you arrive what the tour includes. 8 Anonymous

Thick fog Friday morning prevented 15 hot air balloons from flying on the first day of the Lewiston-Auburn Balloon Festival. Several balloons were inflated but remained tethered to the ground.

"On a morning like this when we can’t fly, we always try to set up just because some people are 5 minutes away. Some people drive a half hour — hour," John Colburn, the crew chief for the RE/MAX balloon, said. "We just love seeing the smiles on their faces."

Despite the last-minute change in plans due to the weather, Simard-Payne Park in Lewiston was still packed with spectators early Friday morning. Bethann Gingras has been going to the festival every summer for years. She plans to go back for every launch. The launches are scheduled for 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.

"I see friends that I haven’t seen all year. It’s a gathering spot for everybody,” Gingras said.

l-a balloon festival

The festival has more to see than just the hot air balloons. A craft fair runs each day 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There is a kids carnival, parade and entertainment, as well as food and beverage vendors.

The cities of Lewiston and Auburn worked together to secure the nonprofit vendors and schedule the events. The Great Falls Balloon Festival board of directors, who usually runs the event, announced at the end of May that they would be canceling the festival this year.

balloons

In their announcement , the board of directors cited "a series of challenges and unforeseen circumstances." Mell Hamlyn, a volunteer helping to run the festival this year, felt it was critical the event still happened.

"I know how important it is to raise funds throughout the year," she said. "And for some of those groups, this is their only fundraiser all year, so it would be hard to replace it if we didn’t have it."

Joshua Stoehner, the co-founder of An Angel's Wing , agrees. His nonprofit sells food and drinks to help raise money. He says they make 10 to 15% of their annual revenue in this one weekend.

"These funds are going to go to outfitting beds, dressers, clothing, all the things that are needed to open a sober home. So, this year particularly, it is really important to be successful," Stoehner said.

Hamlyn expects that all nonprofits combined will raise about $100,000. The anticipated revenue for local businesses, Hamlyn said, is around $2.1 million.

The Lewiston-Auburn Balloon Festival runs through Sunday. Tickets for the hot air balloon rides have sold out, but the festival is free to attend.
