Time Travel Vienna is a world of experience on the history of Vienna in the historical vaults at Michaelerplatz in the first district of Vienna. On a one-hour tour accompanied by tour guides, visitors experience eight different show-like scenes from 2000 years of Viennese history, including a 5D cinema, an air raid shelter from the war era and a virtual reality ride "Music in Vienna" on a total area of ​​1300 m² . In 2018 Time Travel recorded 247,114 visitors and ranked 17th among Vienna's attractions.

Time Travel was founded on June 1st, 2012 by Paul Rankine.

The Time Travel Vienna concept was developed in close collaboration with the historians Manfried Rauchsteiner and Katrin Unterreiner . For the multimedia shows and technical effects, numerous companies from Europe and the USA were engaged, which have already implemented projects for the Walt Disney Corporation or the Merlin Group . History comes to life at Time Travel Vienna through the interaction of historical content and entertainment technology.

The tour is conducted in German. There are audio guides in ten different languages ​​(English, Spanish, French, Italian, Czech, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Chinese, Japanese). Visitors can hear each show simultaneously translated into their national language via headphones. A tour includes 32 seats and a 50-minute tour starts every 20 minutes.

What is the best way to get to Time Travel Vienna and Sisi's Amazing Journey?

Time Travel Vienna is located at Habsburgergasse 10a, 1010 Vienna (side street from Graben). The subway stations U3/U1 Stephansplatz or U3 Herrengasse are closest. City buses line 1A and 2A also stop at Habsburgergasse station.

Hofburg (Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments), Spanish Riding School, Treasury, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, National Library and Albertina are about a 5-10 minute walk from Time Travel Vienna.

At discounted rates you can park at the Wipark Garage, address: Freyung 4, 1010 Vienna. You can find more information here. You are not allowed to drive into Habsburgergasse (driving ban).

How does it work with the translation / audio guides ?

International guests can experience the entire tour with audio guides (headphones) simultaneously translated, there are 10 languages to choose from. The audio guides are included in the price of admission.

Can I visit the world of experience with a toddler?

Children from 0-4 years can visit the exhibition free of charge and share a seat with the accompanying person in the 5D cinema. Provided there is room in the tour, the child is welcome to sit in their own seat. In exceptional cases, toddlers may find the 5D Cinema too loud and may put on hearing protection headphones. You are welcome to sit with your toddler in a separate chair with no movement effects. You are welcome to bring a stroller, but please note that there are approximately 50 steps to climb during the tour.

Children under the age of 10 should only visit the exhibition when accompanied by an adult. The Plague Pit and Bunker stations can be skipped with this age group.

Even the chairs in the cinema where you sit move with the show. You have to buckle up. It’s almost like a roller coaster ride in a ghost train, you ride through groups of rats and much more. But it’s not real, you’re sitting in a cinema.

The show in Zeitreise Wien with the VR glasses is also well done. For example, you have the feeling of being in the middle of the Vienna Opera Ball. In addition, at other stations there are life-size figures from the history of Vienna that move and speak. These include Empress Sissi with her husband Franz Joseph, Maria Theresa, the composers Mozart and Strauss and a few more. Very spooky is the plague pit. This is where the dead were thrown in during a severe plague epidemic in Vienna.

At the end there is a visit to a real air-raid shelter in the Second World War. A bombing raid on Vienna is simulated. Everything is very real, exciting. You have fun and learn a lot about the history of Vienna.

The groups in the interactive guided tour of Time Travel Vienna are a maximum of about 30 people. There are often several tours per hour. Nevertheless, the trip through Time Travel Vienna is very often sold out. One should definitely book online in advance.

We have also been to similar, modern time travel attractions like Timeride Dresden and Timeride Berlin . We liked the time travel in Vienna by far the best, mainly because it is so varied, informative and technically well done. Rarely have we experienced and learned so much in one hour. The Time Travel Vienna experience is more than worth the 15 to 20 euro entrance fee.

Almost directly opposite Time Travel Vienna is a very similar attraction called Sisi’s Amazing Journey Vienna , also a virtual reality experience.

Time Travel Vienna: A journey through Vienna’s history for all ages

The magic vienna history tour with a 5d cinema.

In addition to the typical and universally-known tourist attractions , you can occasionally find one or the other insider’s tip. One such tip is Time Travel Vienna , which is located in the first district between Herrenplatz and Stephansplatz.

Time Travel – 5D experience and show

The show, which lasts approximately one hour, is ideal for a rainy day or an occasional pastime, and is not too strenuous for very young or older visitors either. A diverse programme structure impresses visitors right from the beginning with a snappy  5D cinema experience , which is good at causing a few gasps – (mainly from mothers) or excited squeals (usually from the kids).

The second station leads the visitors through the cellar and directly to a private  Habsburger show , where the Imperial family are cheerfully chatting to each other. This personal audience offers humorous insights into the family and professional life of von Maria Theresia, Emperor Maximilian, Sisi, and Franz Josef.

The tour continues to  “Music in Vienna” , a dialogue between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss and a fantastical carousel full of waltzing and lightheartedness. The “War Years” are also a part of the history of Vienna, although to a more grim period.

Experiencing  wartime  at  Time Travel Vienna  is optional. It takes place in a recreated air raid shelter with the siren signalling an air raid during the Second World War, before the end of the occupation time and Figl’s signing of the Austrian State Treaty are celebrated.

As a finishing touch – how could it be anything else – we are invited on a trip with Vienna’s most famous means of transport, the  Fiaker (horse-drawn carriage). Having said that, this is not a conventional carriage, and is kind to animals, for that – but we don’t want to give too much away, but rather leave a few secrets for visitors!

occupation time in Vienna (1945-55)

Vienna did not look any different after the Second World War than many other European cities, bombed and starving. Initially, only Soviet soldiers were present after the liberation of Vienna , the Western Allies (USA, France and Great Britain) did not follow until September 1945.

After the Second World War, Austria was occupied from 1945 to 1955 by the four victorious powers. These were Soviet , American, British and French troops, dividing Austria into four zones. Vienna was also divided into four sectors, as well as a common interallied zone, the 1st district.

At the beginning, the occupation was characterized by military control The international patrol consisted of one military soldier of each occupying force and began to work in August 1945. At first there were three soldiers, each one from the Soviet Union, USA and Great Britain. The Frenchman arrived in September 1945

“The four in the jeep” controlled in the first district, as well as in the rest of Vienna. The American was always behind the wheel (after all, it was an American jeep), and next to him was the Briton, behind the driver sat the Frenchman and next to him the Soviet. Now and then, the positions were changed, except for the driver.

In the 1950s, the four in the Jeep were also the topic in a swiss movie.

The State Treaty

The Austrian State Treaty was signed after 10 years of occupation (1945-55) on May 15, 1955 in the Marble Hall of the Belvedere Palace. It concerned the restoration of free, independent and democratic Austria. Neutrality was an important negotiating criterion. Leopold Figl and Julius Raab were the politicians involved Leopold Figl, then Foreign Minister, was one of the signatories of the State Treaty, together with the respective Foreign Ministers and High Commissioners of thefour occupying powers. Figl is wellknown for his famous words: “Austria is free”.

It was signed by the respective foreign ministers and high commissioners of the victorious powers : Molotov and Ilyichov for the Soviet Union, Macmillan and Wallinger for Great Britain, Dulles and Thompson for the United States, and Pinay and Lalouette for France. Leopold Figl signed in green ink as foreign minister at the time.

It is interesting that the Original of the State Treaty is kept in Moscow and not in Vienna. The document contains nearly 300 pages with translations in Russian, English, French and German. It is in the archive of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow . Case by case the document comes to Austria for exhibitions

The Austrian national holiday 26 October

After the signing of the State Treaty on May 15, 1955, the agreed period of 90 days began in which the occupying forces had to leave Austria. The last day was October 25, 1955, and to this day we keep the legend of the last Russian occupation soldier, who is said to have left Austria on that day. It is correct that he left the country already in September.

The Austrian Neutrality law came into force on October 26, 1955. On this day in 1955, Austrian neutrality came into force. Since 1967 it is a public holiday and free of work.

This day is traditionally celebrated with a parade of the Austrian Federal Army at Vienna’s Heroe’s square. Many public institutions, as well as government buildings open their doors to the public.

After his father died suddenly of scarlet fever in 1849 at the age of only 45 , the son was able to t ake over his father’s orchestra. It was not until 1852 that Johann Strauss Sohn was entrusted with the performance of music at the imperial court. Later the title of k.k.Hofballmusik-Direktor followed.

The operetta “Fledermaus” and the “Gypsy Baron” created further hype. He was showered with invitations and honors as the Waltz King. During the day he composed countless waltzes and operettas, and in the evening he played late into the night. He became famous worldwide for the Donau Waltz , which is considered the secret anthem of Austria.

Strauss’ enormous workload took its toll: physical breakdowns necessitated a series of spa stays in 1853-55. He was inspired in Badgastein and then spent a few seasons as a guest in Pavlosk near St. Petersburg, where he also won over the Russian tsar’s family. It was the performances in Pavlovsk that finally made Strauss’s son step out of his father’s shadow in Vienna.

In 1862 he married Henriette, a former singer seven years his senior, called Jetty, who also became his manager. After she died in 1878, he married the actress and singer E rnestine Dittrich, called Lili, who was 25 years younger. However, it soon came to divorce because of another man. He consoled himself with Adele Strauss, who was 31 years younger. In order to marry her, he converted from Catholicism to Protestantism and even left the Austrian state and became a citizen of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

In 1872 he embarked on his longest concert tour, which took him across the Atlantic to the “World Peace Festival” in Boston and on to New York. However, he quickly suffered from homesickness and was glad to be able to make a guest appearance in Vienna again.

On June 3, 1899, he died at the age of 74 as a result of pneumonia . He was married three times and left no children.

His monument in the City Park is one of the most photographed in Vienna and we can visit his honorary grave at the Central Cemetery. Furthermore, his former residence on Praterstraße , where he composed the famous Danube Waltz, can be visited. In addition, there is an interesting museum about the Strauss dynasty in the 9th district.

The best time to visit Vienna is in the early autumn, when you get all the benefits of the summer high season without the crowds. December is also one of the best times to visit the city thanks to its spectacular Christmas season.

Vienna has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summer is the warmest season, but the mild temperatures last well into fall.

September’s average daytime high temperatures are 66 degrees Fahrenheit  (19 degrees Celsius), meaning that the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the great outdoors. October is a bit cooler and crisper, with average daytime highs of 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius).

The mild weather makes this a great time to get outdoors, and a lot of the best of Vienna is located outside. Besides walking around the streets, you can explore the grounds of the many palaces, especially the massive park surrounding Schoenbrunn .

Another way to enjoy the gorgeous weather is to head to one of Vienna’s parks, such as the very famous Prater.

The Prater amusement park is open all year round, but it’s the nicest when the weather is warm, and it has the longest opening hours during the peak season  from mid-March to the end of October.

Autumn is a great time to discover some of Vienna’s hidden gems, including its wine. Many people don’t know that Vienna actually has vineyards within city limits, on the hills surrounding the center—or that Austria is a great wine producer in the first place.

The best time to explore the vineyards is during the autumn harvest season, when there is even an official Vienna Wine Hiking Day . Although the weather is still gorgeous in autumn, the city receives far fewer visitors than it does during the summer peak season.

The cheapest time to visit Vienna is from the middle of winter into spring, January-May, when there are fewer tourists, and you can find good deals on hotels.

January to May mark Vienna’s low season, once the holiday rush is over and before the summer high season begins. Since there are fewer tourists around, many businesses are forced to lower their prices.

Since Vienna isn’t a strictly seasonal destination, you’ll still have plenty of options when it comes to finding a choice in your budget.

The biggest savings during this time happen on accommodation. In January and February, you can find the steepest discounts on hotels. Even in early spring, you can find great deals on hotels, up to 20-25% off peak season prices, even on high-end hotels.

Just be sure to avoid popular holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Easter, when prices briefly rise. The middle of winter is the least expensive time to get to Vienna from North America. Flights tend to cost less in January and February, which is generally the slow season for air travel.

You can find (slightly smaller) discounts on flights into spring, especially from within Europe. For train travel, reserve tickets well in advance to get discounts.

Least Busy Time to Visit Vienna

The least busy time to visit Vienna is in the middle of winter, but you can also beat the crowds in the spring and enjoy good weather to boot.

January and February are the months when Vienna receives the absolute fewest number of visitors. If you visit then, you may encounter more chilly weather ( winter averages in Vienna are only slightly above freezing), but also fewer people around.

If you visit in early January, you can still enjoy the Christmas markets, which stay up until the middle of the month, but with far fewer people.

Spring brings warmer temperatures, and by April many Viennese are back to hanging out in the parks and enjoying the great outdoors. You may encounter some rain, but if you get lucky, your trip will be all sunshine.

However, the crowds of tourists don’t really come until the end of May or June. That makes this period a great time to explore the best of Vienna, indoors and outdoors.

The most popular museums of Vienna can have very long lines in the peak season, but you can have artwork such as Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” all to yourself during the winter and spring.

The overall worst time to visit Vienna is in the summer because of the large number of crowds. This time is the most popular time for tourists to visit, and it’s easy to understand why.

The weather is at its best, with average daytime temperatures of 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius). The skies are sunny and it’s a perfect time for strolling through palace gardens or having a beer in the park.

However, you won’t be the only one with the great idea of visiting Vienna in the summer. The entire country of Austria received nearly 4 million visitors in July 2023, and many of these visitors passed through Vienna.

Expect to wait in line for pretty much everything, from tickets to popular museums to a table at popular cafes such as Hotel Sacher, home of the original Sacher torte.

The many crowds make a visit unpleasant because nobody likes spending lots of time waiting in line. However, even if you visit in summer, you can still have a good time. Beat the crowds by visiting museums early in the day and checking out less popular attractions.

Reserve restaurants in advance if you have somewhere you really want to eat. During summer, follow the locals and head outdoors.

You can just lounge in the park or participate in the many events including outdoor film screenings and concerts—most of them for free. Popular events include the Vienna Jazz Festival  (June) and Filmfest Rathausplatz  (all summer long).
