Stretching 98 miles from the northwest Arkansas Ozarks to the Arkansas River in Gore, Oklahoma, the Illinois river is a perfect place to celebrate special holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Explore hidden fishing spots and cool swimming holes as you paddle your way to the clearest part of the Illinois river by floating with a kayak.

Kayaks are available in either single or tandem varieties. The kayaks sit on top with molded backrests.

Don’t miss the chance to take some pictures of bald eagles that may appear on the inhabited riverway. Look from left to right as there are snapping turtles, vultures, cardinals, deer, alligator gar, and pickerel that you might encounter on your floats.

Whether you’re inexperienced or not, it’s safe to float the Illinois river as it is rated as Class II which means the current is moderate and you can chill and enjoy a relaxing ride.

If you’re down for some thrill, rafting Northeastern Oklahoma rivers is a must-do. Many Illinois river outfitters offer a raft that can carry six persons maximum. A limited amount of 2-4 person and a few 7-10 person rafts are available.

Before taking a longer trip, we advise you to check river conditions to ensure your utmost safety.

Most outfitters have campgrounds for you to set up camp along the Illinois river. It’s a fun moment to unwind, reconnect with nature, and forget the heavyweights brought work.

Fill your Saturday night with good memories on the campgrounds located on the banks of the river. Spending quality time in picnic areas is also a relaxing way for your Sunday getaway. Just make sure to do it within a few hundred feet of your tent.

Public Access

The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) advises visitors who bring their kayak, canoe, raft, inner tube, or other flotation devices to secure a private float permit before floating to public access areas.

Day use permits (wristband dated for the day of your trip) is $1 per device per day and can be bought in advance.

You can purchase at the following outlets:

• Hanging Rock Camp
• GRDA Scenic Rivers Operations Police or

Annual permits cost $10 per device and are valid from January to December. They are decals that should be applied to the front right side of your vessel. Annual permits are available from the GRDA Scenic Rivers Operations Office.

Embark On a 12-Mile Illinois River Float Trip

Planning on a 12-mile float trip is possible here in Illinois river. In general, the excursion can be done in a day, but some folks take two to three days. Children under the age of 12 pay half the ticket price. The total time takes approximately 3-5 hours, so you may need to plan ahead for this float.

Bring Your Own Float To The Illinois River

For $25, the boat will carry floating passengers and supply floats. If someone wants to float, he or she must send a buddy to help them travel to their destination and downstream back to their car.

You must reserve separate trips for the day you want to take Illinois river float trips. Float trips are only valid on a reserved day. Please make reservations for the day of the float and ignore the checkout date.

Important Reminders

The GRDA reminds floaters of the following rules they should follow when they visit the river:

• Respect private property rights and observe the no trespassing signs all the time
• Do not litter, and keep trash bags wherever you go.
• Children aged 12 years old and below must wear life jackets when they float the river.
• All visitors must secure an accessible life preserver, which should not be tied to the vessel.
• Coordinate with your chosen outfitters when planning an overnight float trip
• Observe proper decorum as obscene behavior can lead to a night in the county jail

Prohibited Activities

• Hard liquors on the river are not allowed ( Wine and light beer are allowed as long as it’s brought in the original non-glass package)
• Bringing glass, jello shot containers, or styrofoam is not allowed on the river.
• Never tie your rafts, canoes, and kayaks together on your boats.
• No person shall carry ice chests that are not secured to prevent spilling their contents or larger than a 48-quart capacity on a scenic river.
• No firearms or weapons
• Playing on rope swings is prohibited.
• No Jumping from bridges

GRDA officers and the outfitters’ personnel will conduct an ocular inspection of the river and its surrounding areas. Please cooperate with the authorities if they inspect your belonging, such as ice chests, purses, bags, and other items, for them to keep the river free from banned or illegal things.

Since The Landing originated the Current River Tube Trip over 30 years ago, it has become an extremely popular form of summertime entertainment. More and more people each year have discovered this relaxing pastime. It is a unique and inexpensive form of entertainment for the whole family, and we guarantee you a fun-filled summer day or weekend!

Standard Tube

The Current River Original. If you like to keep it simple and do it the old fashioned way, the rubber tube is the tube for you.

Current River Cadillac

Cadillac tubes are tubes with a fabric cover and a mesh seat. They provide better back support to make your tube float more comfortable, and the cover keeps the tube from getting hot from the sun.

Deluxe Tube

The deluxe tube is made from heavy duty PVC. They include two handles that make it easy to move your tube in and out of the water.

An upgraded version of the Deluxe Tube, with a backrest and included cupholder.

Deluxe Cooler Tube

If you are taking a cooler with you on your tube trip (recommended) you will need this specialized tube to float your cooler.

The Landing offers a large selection of 6 man rafts which are great for families and groups of 6 or less that want to float together. Our heavy duty PVC rafts are 12 foot long and 6 foot wide.

Canoeing the Current River is as famous as it is fun. Most of our canoes are 17 feet Osagian brand, 2 person canoes. Easily maneuverable, the canoe floats twice as fast as any other vessel. Each canoe has plenty of room for your cooler, fishing tackle and river gear.

The Landing offers a large selection of colorful one man, self-bailing, inflatable kayaks. The capabilities of our kayaks make a very enjoyable single user experience.

*Reservations are highly recommended for these vessels on Summer weekends. To place a reservation, please call the River Store to arrange your group reservation. Final payment is due the day before your reserved date. On the day of your reservation, please come into the River Store to get your river pass and start your trip!

OVERNIGHT FLOAT TRIPS

The Landing offers several overnight camping float trips by canoe or raft ranging from one night out to five nights out. Departure times for overnight trips will be arranged on an individual basis and should be arranged at least three days before your departure date.

Overnight canoeing and rafting trips should be undertaken only by experienced floaters. All of the these trips take you through very remote areas and there are very few communication areas such as cell phone service, public phones, restrooms, or stores. It is possible that you could be affected by inclimate weather, etc. Remember that you cannot be picked up after you set out from your put-in point, so plan accordingly with food, water, clothing and shelter. Rafts will float somewhat slower than canoes, so if you are planning an overnight raft trip, talk to us about floating times, rates, etc.

Harvey’s Canoe Rental was established at Alley Spring in 1963 by Harvey and Edna Staples. After Harvey’s death, his son Danny and wife Barb took over the operation. Current owner, Shane Van Steenis, began working for Danny and Barb at 16 years old and took over the business in 1999 with his wife, Kim, and daughter Taylor. The Niangua is a tributary of the Osage arm of Lake of the Ozarks. A class I/II river fed by cold springs makes it a popular summer destination. It is also one of Missouri’s best streams to fish for the abundant trout.

NRO provides canoe rental, campgrounds, RV sites, and several cabins, some which sleep up to 18. Food and concessions are available at The Grub Bucket located at the campground.

Sand Spring Resort

This popular resort has canoes, kayaks, rafts, and tube rentals. There is lodging available with amenities including an indoor pool, hot tub, kitchenettes add party facilities. Cabins are also available. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, or even happy hour from 2-5 at the Gravel Bar and Grill.

Riverfront Camp Canoe

A spring-fed tributary of the Current River, Jack’s Fork is one of the wildest and most scenic of all Missouri Ozark streams. It’s one of the two rivers that make up the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. The upper 25 miles flow through a deep valley and have many class 11 rapids.

Harvey’s Alley Spring

Established in 1963, Harvey’s is the oldest canoe rental on The Jack’s Fork. They have kayaks, canoes, rafts, and tubes all available for rent. Visit their site for info on camping and lodging.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Campgrounds along the river are owned and operated by the National Park Service. Call the Riverways Headquarters at 573-323-4236 or go to their website to get info on tent camping. Some spots are accessible with RVs.

2 Rivers Canoe

Located just east of Eminence, MO, they can outfit you with everything you need. The National Park operates the campground at Two Rivers. The adventurous might want to pack up tents, sleeping bags, gear, and supplies and camp along the river bank or on a gravel bar. keep in mind if it rains, the river will rise.

Current River:

The cold and clear Current River, the first river in America designated as a National Riverway, has been rated the #1 canoe camping river in the US. It is the most spring-fed of all the Ozark rivers making it floatable any time of the year. The Current River is a Class I with an occasional Class II.

Akers Ferry Canoe (formerly Current River Canoe)

They are located in Akers, MO on the Current River. Their facilities include canoes, tubes, camping, cabins, a pool, a general store, hot showers, restrooms, and electric hookups. Akers Ferry Canoe Rental is an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service.

The Landing

Located on 23 acres on the banks of the Current River, The Landing offers deluxe tubes, canoes, kayaks, and rafts at their riverfront lodge. Be sure to try the crab-stuffed filet at their Blue Heron Restaurant .

Jadwin Canoe

They furnish canoes, kayaks, and 4-6 person rafts. Supplies can be purchased at Jadwin Canoe Rental. They have groceries, ice, soda, t-shirts, caps, and visors. Campsites are available through the National Park Service, 877-444-6777, or on their website .

Rocky River Resort

Located just south of the Current River Bridge on the east side of the river, in Doniphan, MO. Their motel amenities include a pool, an 18-hole miniature golf course, and the Journeyman Restaurant and Lounge. Their campground has RV sites along with tent sites. And of course, rafts, canoes, and kayaks are on hand for long or short float trips.

Meramac River:

The Meramec River is one of the longest free-flowing, waterways in Missouri. It is fed by Meramec Spring and many other smaller springs. It is floatable right down to where it flows into the Mississippi River. Although most paddlers prefer the upper part due to development farther down. This is a class I (sometimes II) that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Meramac River Resort

Located in Steelville, MO. They have over 20 cabins and lots of space for sampling and parking. You can relax and enjoy the river by floating, kayaking, or just swimming. Hiking and fishing are also fun to add to your trip.

Old Cove Canoe

They offer two trips, starting upstream and ending at your car. Rafts, canoes, and kayaks are available. Make sure and check out the iron furnace built in 1849. Also try glamping at their partner site, Lost Hill Lake . Primitive riverside campsites are a great way to spend the night after a day of floating fun.

Ozark Outdoors

Situated on the banks of the Meramec in Leasburg, MO, this 110-acre resort is a complete playcation. Enjoy tubing, rafting, canoeing, or kayaking on the Meramec, Huzzah, or Courtois Rivers. Stay at one of their 120 full hookup RV sites, 5 condos, 20 motel rooms, or 27 cabins along with 200 tent campsites. Besides floating activities include zip lines, horseback riding, fishing, and bald eagle watching. Listen to live music at Paddlers Bar & Grill at the end of your day.

North Fork River:

The North Fork of the White River provides some of the best whitewater in the Ozarks of Missouri. It flows through Mark Twain National Forest, gathers many streams, and becomes North Fork Lake.

Sunburst Ranch Canoe

Located on a mile-long stretch of the North Fork River, you can bring your own tube, float, and never leave the campground. They have cabins, RV sites, and tent campgrounds. Rafts, tubes, kayaks, and canoes are ready to rent.

Pettits Canoe Rental

Pettit’s is the oldest continuously run canoe rental on the North Fork. They provide some of the nicest campgrounds on the river and are open year-round. Cabins are available also. Along with canoes, kayaks, and rafts, tubes are ready to rent.

Twin Bridges

Canoes and kayaks are available at Twin Bridges which is on the banks of the beautiful North Fork River. They have RV sites, cabins that sleep up to 12, as well as camping by the river. Get supplies at their general store. You can eat indoors or outdoors at their bar & grill, where yummy breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served.

River of Life Farm

Besides being a world-class fly fishing resort, ROLF offers the finest in Missouri floating, with quality rafts, kayaks, and canoe rentals. They are a licensed outfitter of the US Forest Service. In addition to floating and fishing, you can hunt, hike, bird watch, and star gaze. Or you can tour old grist mills . Lodging options include cabins that accommodate up t o14 people and even a treehouse cabin.

Eleven Point River:

One of the original eight National Wild and Scenic Riverways, the Eleven Point flowers through southern Missouri’s Ozark hills. Starting as a small stream, it widens and deepens as it course through forested valleys. Springs provide a continuous source of water.

Hufstedlers

Float one of Missouri’s most secluded and scenic rivers with the largest selection of watercraft on the Eleven Point. Hufstedler’s has 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units along with a camping area with a shower house and restrooms. They are the only canoe rental within walking distance of the river.

US Forest Service

Richards Canoe Rental

Starting in the summer of 1976, they serve over 100 miles of the Eleven Point River. Richards offers canoe, kayak, and tube rentals. They have accommodations for tent and RV camping while also providing cabins and motel rooms. they operate a handy on-site camp store where you can purchase ice, canned goods, liquor, firewood, and other things you may have forgotten. They also have nice hot showers for campers and rental customers.

Ozark Adventures

Big Piney/Gasconade Rivers:

The Big Piney River is 100 miles long and is the largest tributary of the Gasconade River. The Big Piney is rated as one of Missouri’s best fishing streams. It’s a class I, seldom class II, except during high water. The Gasconade is ranked class I and is the longest river completely within the boundary of Missouri. It’s also been called one of the world’s crookedest rivers!

Wilderness Ridge Resort

Wilderness Ridge offers float trips, hunting, and fishing too. They rent all you’ll need with canoes, rafts, kayaks, and tubes too. Stay at one of their cabins or at a campsite on a bluff overlooking the Big Piney. All campsites have a fire pit ring for campfires and some have electric and water hookup. There is a shower house for campers to use.

Pecks Last Resort

Located in the heart of the Mark Twain National Forrest, there are two campgrounds, tents and trailers are welcome. Some sites have power box hookups. The most popular float is a day trip starting from Six Crossings. Rafts, canoes, and kayaks are available.

BSC Outdoors

They rent canoes, rafts, kayaks, deluxe river tubes, and jar boats. Cabins & sites for your tent, RV, or travel trailer are available too.

Beaver Creek:

Flowing through the Mark Twain National Forest, Beaver Creek is a tributary of the White River.

Beaver Creek Campground

Located in Ava, MO they offer cabins, tents, and RV sites along with canoes, kayaks, and SUP (stand-up paddle) boards. They are the only outfitter on Beaver Creek.

Missouri Canoe & Floaters Assoc.

The Big River is a tributary of the Meramec River. Old mills and mill sites dot the riverbanks.

Missouri Park Adventures

Washington State Park offers camping, cozy cabins with fire pits, and picnic areas. Enjoy the pool with a snack bar and take a float trip in a canoe or kayak. Then you can hike one of the three trails in the park.

Adventures Float Trips is a great place to spend a care-free day (or two, or more!) soaking in the sights and sounds of nature as you peacefully float down the clear, cold Niangua river. Whether you and your family love to kayak, canoe, or raft, Adventures Float Trips will give everyone the unique float experience they’ve been craving!

We’re open year round. We are located on State Highway 64 4 miles from Bennett Spring State Park, 16 miles west of Lebanon, and 13 miles east of US 65 at Louisburg. We offer great access for day trips, travelers, motorcyclists, or spur-of-the-moment-fun.

Enjoy all the excellent fishing and beautiful scenery on a less crowded river with our weekday floats and primitive camping. We offer river trips that give you flexibility in float times, and plenty of time to fish and play.

Our affordable overnight stay allows for the small savings that you might need for gas and other expenses. Please see our camping page for other details .

As fall approaches (late September to early October), the leaves on the trees begin to change colors. Fishing is great, and wildlife is abundant. Don’t miss out, enjoy one last day on the beautiful Niangua River before the winter months.

Reservations and Deposits are required for weekend Floats. However, if wanting to avoid any crowds, consider a float through the week.

Reservation Information:

• Please send full amount or half of the total which would be considered a deposit only.
• If there is a threat of severe weather or there is high water you will receive a raincheck that is good for one year from the date of your reservation. If the threat of severe weather ends or the river is navigable by noon rainchecks will not be given.
• Cancellation or reduction of your float trip must be made at least 14 days in advance to receive a refund of the deposit less a processing fee. If the cancellation is within 14 days there will be NO REFUNDS.

IDAHO/SPOKANE AREA TRIPS – COEUR D’ALENE AND SPOKANE RIVERS

Scenic Coeur d’Alene River Float *Idaho Gem Trip!  (Meets 45 minutes East of Coeur d’Alene, ID or 2 hour drive from Missoula) Idea: Stay at a campground on this river on your way to Spokane/Seattle. This is a great way to spend half the day in the Coeur d’Alene/Spokane area.  This is a nice two to four hour river float (depending on season and water flow) down the Lower Coeur d’Alene River! Great for all ages and abilities ! Nervous about younger children on the boats? This is your float trip! You get out on the water without any stress. Scenic Spokane River Float (Meets along the river downtown Spokane on Water Ave – River Park) Headed all the way to Spokane, Washington? May through October this option is ideal for large groups looking for a relaxing adventure surrounded by the beauty of the Inland Northwest. Nervous about younger children on the boats? Feel free to explore this float trip! You get out on the water without any stress. Games provided by your fun-loving tour guides if desired. This beginner level scenic gentle float route is the closest to Spokane. If you have limited time or don’t want to travel the 2 hours to the world class Scenic Clark Fork River, this trip is perfect for the fresh air and views. This trip provides the opportunity for leisure time and enjoy any wildlife you might view. The Spokane River Scenic Trip is close to town and goes right through the heart of Spokane, taking out at a park just before the famous devils toenail and bowl and pitcher rapids. MISSOULA MONTANA AREA TRIPS – CLARK FORK RIVER

If you are headed to Glacier National Park and want to go whitewater rafting or on a scenic float along the way, this is your trip. The Clark Fork River is considered the #1 river to experience in the Northwest.

All Clark Fork River trips include:  Life Jackets, wet suits if needed for comfort, splash jackets, water shoes, guide, boat, paddles, shuttle back to your vehicle at our raft shop on the Clark Fork River, group transportation from Missoula (arrange in advance), and private parking. Overnight Float Trips

Now that you’ve been on several float trips, have minimized the number of tip-overs, and have traveled the same five or ten miles of the river over and over again, it’s time to up the ante. It’s time to challenge yourself and make the river fresh again.

One way of accomplishing this is to do a multi-day trip in which you have to camp out along the way. Start small with an overnight float trip and work your way up to lengthier trips camping out several days along the way. A twenty mile trip is a good place to start. Do ten or twelve miles the first day, camp out and finish the rest of the trip on the second.

A two man pop up tent packs small and is plenty big enough for an overnight stay. Wrap sleeping bags in the ground tarp and then with two trash bags for added protection against getting wet. There’s nothing worse or heavier than a wet sleeping bag. If you’re only staying one night, use the extra plastic bag for trash the next day since it won’t matter if the sleeping bag gets damp or wet then. Always take your trash with you and leave the river area cleaner than you found it.

Wherever you decide to place your campsite, add another three or four feet from the river to that distance. Floating rivers tend to raise quickly from rain storms upstream. You don’t want to wake up in the river the next morning. For the same reason, pull your canoe totally out of the river onto the gravel or sand bar. In addition, tie it to a tree with a length of rope to prevent getting stranded.

If the idea of an overnight camp out sounds fun, but the preparation does not, contact one of the many canoe rental businesses to see if they offer overnight camping setups. Let them do the work of pitching camp while you enjoy paddling down the river. When you arrive at a pre-designated location, everything will be ready and waiting.

Catch your dinner while floating, cook it over a bed of hot coals at the campsite, and enjoy the beauty, peace, and freedom of a camping on the river.

Will– Great read! This has inspired me to plan a spring float trip already! Do you have any places in particular that offer the service of setting up camp for us? Or just to let us stop and camp?
