How To Visit the Borghese Gallery in 2024: Tickets, Hours, Tours, and More

Sean Finelli Last Updated: April 30, 2024

Pound-for-pound, the Borghese Gallery is one of the greatest collections of baroque sculptures on Earth. It’s also one of the most pleasant museum experiences you may ever have for many reasons. In this guide, find out why that is and how to visit the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Pro Tip:  Planning to visit the Borghese Gallery in Rome? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. See our Borghese Gallery guide for more planning resources, our  top-rated private Borghese Gallery tour  for a memorable trip, and the best things to do in Rome.

Visiting the Borghese Gallery: What We’ll Cover

During the 15th century, the Borghese family rose in stature and power. The wealthy family built Villa Borghese as their private residence in Rome. The idea to create an art gallery inside the villa came from Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a passionate art collector who wanted a place to display and preserve the fine art collection of the family.

Today, you can visit the gallery to appreciate one of the greatest collections of baroque sculptures on Earth. However, getting tickets can be difficult as the gallery restricts both the number of visitors per day and the amount of time you can spend inside. It’s well worth it, though! Here’s what you need to know about how to visit the Borghese Gallery:

  • Opening hours and tickets
  • How much time to budget for your visit
  • How to get there
  • What to see in the Borghese Gallery
  • Guided tour options
  • Places to eat nearby

How Long To Spend at the Borghese Gallery

The Rape of Proserpina, a statue by Bernini (Room IV) in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Short answer : 2 hours

The Borghese Gallery limits the number of people who can visit the gallery on any given day and it limits the amount of time visitors can spend in the gallery to 2 hours. So if you manage to get tickets, we recommend spending your full 2-hour time slot in the gallery.

It will also be a rare opportunity in Rome to see world-class artwork by the likes of Bernini, Caravaggio, Titian, and Raphael with far fewer other people compared to the Vatican Museums and the colosseum, for example.

How To Get To the Borghese Gallery

The Borghese Gallery is located in the Villa Borghese, a scenic 25-minute walk from the Spanish Steps through the villa gardens.

If you’re already in the city center, you might find it easier to reach the Borghese Gallery by climbing the stairs in Piazza del Popolo and entering the villa directly. In this case, take a moment to enjoy the view of the city from above, then keep walking in the park until you reach the gallery.

If you prefer more direct access, head instead to Via Pinciana, situated in the north of Rome, and find the gallery directly at the entrance. You can also get there by taxi and metro.

By Taxi:

Search for the museum when you’re connected to Wi-Fi if you’re not using your service abroad. Your GPS will still work when you leave Wi-Fi as long as you hit go beforehand.

When you get in the taxi, tell them, “Galleria Borghese” or hand them a piece of paper with “Piazzale Scipione Borghese, 5 (Galleria Borghese)” on it. They’ll drop you off in a small car park off Via Pinciana and probably point to the museum. At this point, you should see a big black gate for the gallery and probably the all-white facade of the museums.

They may drop you off at the front of Villa Borghese. You’ll know the difference because you won’t see the white facade of the museum and there’ll be a big intersection. Taxi drivers rarely speak English in Rome, so pay and get out. You’ll see signs for the Borghese Gallery, which will read, “Galleria Borghese” or “Museo.”

By Metro:

I’ll explain below, but you should find the museum on your phone map while you’re on Wi-Fi. You can leave your phone on airplane mode, but GPS still works as long as you hit go while you’re still on Wi-Fi. This is a lifesaver.

Going by metro can be a little more confusing. You need to make your way to the red line or metro A. Get off at “Spagna” but don’t head out to Piazza di Spagna. When you get off the subway, stop following the foot traffic and look for signs that say “Via Venetto”. You’ll go through a very, very long underground tunnel with moving walkways until you reach Via Veneto.

The rule of thumb is if you’re in huge crowds after you go up the big escalators, you’re going the wrong way.  As soon as you go up the big escalators you’ll turn right and right again. Everyone else will turn right and go straight.

Once you get to the exit on the top of Via Veneto, you should exit the city walls, you’ll see them straight away. Head into the Borghese Gardens and look for signs to “Galleria Borghese” or “Museo.”

Address:  Piazzale Scipione Borghese, 5

What To See at the Borghese Gallery

St. Jerome painting by Caravaggio in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

This list is not in order of importance but in the order you’ll see the works on your visit—you don’t want to be running around crossing things off a list. When you walk into the front entrance of the gallery, be sure to enjoy the first room and then turn left and head into the room dedicated to Caravaggio.

This is more of an itinerary list of things you should see. If you’re searching for more detailed descriptions, take a look at our in-depth article on the top things to see at the Borghese Gallery.

Entrance Hall

This is a beautiful welcome area of the palace. Keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Ancient Roman mosaics roped off on the floors. The mosaics were believed to have come from the Baths of Caracalla in Rome.
  • An amazing rococo-style vaulted ceiling depicting different pagan scenes.
  • Marcus Curtius Leaping into Chasm by Pietro Bernini, father of the great Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Boy with a Basket of Fruit by Caravaggio (Room VIII)

This 1593 oil on canvas was done by Caravaggio, aka Michelangelo Merisi, at 22 years old. He was living in Milan at the time where he was from. The work now lives in Room VII of the Borghese Gallery for your viewing pleasure.

Young St John the Baptist (Room VIII)

Right next to Boy with a Basket of Fruit is Caravaggio’s John in the Wilderness . Here you’ll find a tired and frail St. John the Baptist. The overwhelming sadness of this painting draws you in and pushes you away.

St. Jerome by Caravaggio (Room VIII)

St. Jerome by Caravaggio is a wonderful painting that shows one of the most important events in Christian history: the translation of the Bible into Latin from Greek.

Palafrenieri by Caravaggio (Room VIII)

Directly across from St. Jerome , you’ll see a massive painting known as Palafrenieri also by Caravaggio. Basically, you see Jesus, his mother Mary, and Mary’s mother Anne. The work was originally created to be a centerpiece in the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome but was seen as too vulgar.

David with the Head of Goliath (Room VIII)

David is a heavily portrayed figure due to his importance in biblical history. This particular version by Caravaggio shows David beheading Goliath as he looks down in triumph.  The Head of Goliath is a disturbing self-portrait of Caravaggio.

Sick Bacchus by Caravaggio (Room VIII)

Sick Bacchus is another famous painting by Caravaggio found in Scipione Borghese’s former estate. It features a very sickly version of Bacchus, the Roman god of agriculture, wine, and fertility. It displays Caravaggios depleting mental state.

Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius by Bernini (Room VI)

Completed in 1619, Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius is one of the lesser spoken about Bernini sculptures. It’s a beautiful portrayal of Aeneas’ flight from Rome, as described in the “Aeneid” after Troy was sacked by the Greeks.

The Rape of Proserpina  by Bernini  (Room IV)

This really shows Bernini’s engineering marvel. The statue was literally designed for the room—it’s a beautiful baroque touch to tie in your surroundings and features a violent twisting scene of Pluto coming to claim his wife Proserpina.

Apollo and Daphne by Bernini (Room III)

Bernini started to work on this sculpture in 1622 under the commission of Scipione Borghese and he finally ended his work in 1625. It’s considered one of his masterpieces. The statue is an incredible work of art for more reasons than simply good old-fashioned sculpting, which is an understatement. Walk around the sculpture counter-clockwise to see Daphne transform into a tree.

David by Bernini (Room II)

Creating a David scene after Michelangelo creates the David is very difficult. Michelangelo did David after victory—relaxed and confident. Bernini decided to do David before the fight in a fully tense state.

Pauline Bonaparte by Canova (Room I)

Canova dedicated an entire side of his atelier to this project, where Paolina used to go and pose for the artist. The woman is portrayed as a winning Venus, showing an apple in her hand, a symbol of Venus’s victory after Paris’s choice.

The Deposition (of Christ) by Raphael (Room IX)

Raphael’s Deposition is a wood panel painting commissioned by the Baglioni and completed in 1507. The painting depicts a family feud that ended in a mother losing her son. The story is filled with remorse. Be sure to read our extended descriptions in our article top things to see at the Borghese Gallery for the full version of the heart-wrenching story.

Lady with Unicorn by Raphael (Room (IX)

The archery contest of diana and her nymphs by domenichino (room xiv).

This 1616 painting is a lovely full-featured painting that was stolen from Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. It’s a complex story and warrants the explanation of a local guide !

Viterbo and Bomarzo Tour

A trip to the Countryside! On a short trip from Rome, you'll arrive in the quaint countryside of a town called Viterbo, an Etruscan origin as many towns in the area. Even though it is said that this village was founded in the early centuries Anno Domini, it's historical relevance started with the fortification by the Northern King, Desiderius, in the vain attempt to conquer Rome. It has later become one of the Papal States, and desired by Emperors, for centuries, due to its favorable strategic position. When finally, in 1905, it became a Free Commune. It hosts incredible buildings and structures, aside from the breathtaking views. Like the Papal Palace an outstanding building adjacent to the Duomo of Viterbo, it has actually hosted Papacy for approximately 20 years. Since Rome, at the time of Pope Alexander the 4th, was becoming too violent. Viterbo was the perfect environment for the Holy See to continue its work. So of course, this Papal Palace is an incredible building, absolutely worth a visit. The Duomo of Viterbo right next door, is the town Cathedral dedicated to Saint Laurence. Built in the 12th Century where a smaller church used to be. A few interesting notes about this Cathedral are the beautiful original facade from 1570 and the fact that it is built on top of an 8th century church, which was originally built on top of a temple in devotion to Hercules. Aside from these main sites in Viterbo, there are several other attractions to visit Like the Medieval  neighborhood, hosting incredible architectures. And the National Etruscan Museum. Viterbo is not the only charming place you'll see. In fact there are a few other stops your tour driver will make, that will make your head spin! Bagnaia and Bomarzo Visit Villa Lante in Bagnaia One of the greatest structural accomplishments of the Italian 1500s. In Villa Lante, you will see the fountains of the moors, the two mansions (Gambara and Montalto), and a spectacular system of the fountains and water games and a beautiful park. The entire Villa (between the garden and park) occupies a surface of 22 hectares. The particularity of Lante Villa is shown by the magnificence of the garden, especially in the architectural work. You will have lunch in a typical “trattoria” before visiting Bomarzo. Bomarzo is a fantastic garden. It slips into the theatrical, symbol-laden traditions of the Baroque period. Unsurprisingly, after several centuries of neglect, it was rediscovered during the 1950s by surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, who found inspiration in the garden’s mixture of natural and bizarre design. After a beautiful day in the Countryside, visiting the most magical, hidden locations, you’ll return to your requested location in Rome.

Bomarzo, Caprarola and Calcata Tour

A tour to visit the Monsters Park of Bomarzo, Caprarola another incredible village and finally Calcata. You’ll discover some of the most amazing features and hidden gems. Certainly a day to remember. First stop will be Bomarzo (about a 1 hour drive) were you can visit the “Monster Park”. This garden is an extraordinary sight, because with its strange, disturbing sculptures (taken from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso) it was created by Vicino Orsini, Duke of Bomarzo, to rival Caprarola and the Villa Lante. You’ll continue to Caprarola where you can visit the famous Palazzo Farnese. Initially intended to be a fortress by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, its construction started in 1525, and was later transformed by Vignola into a magnificent palace. Antonio Tempesti, Giovanni Il Vecchio, Giovanni Antonio Da Varese, Raffaellino da Reggio, Giacomo Del Duca and Jacopo Bertoia worked to realize this magnificent summer residence. Two bridges connect the palace to the immense Italian Garden and to the park on the back side of the palace. The Summer and Winter gardens encircle the Palace. Fountains, grottos, nymphaea, and numerous statues enrich the way between hedges and large staircases. *Eventually, if the Farnese Palace in Caprarola is closed on the day of your visit, we will substitute it with a visit of the magnificent Orsini-Odescalchi Castle of Bracciano, perched overlooking the shores of the beautiful Bracciano Lake Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. On the way back to Rome, stop at Calcata. This very old village, once an outstanding center of the Faliscans, is now one of the best kept, picturesque towns in the region.

Rome in a Day Tour

Welcome in Rome! There is really no better way to start a Roman vacation than with this private tour. One of our personal tour driver will welcome you at your hotel or any other place of your convenience in Rome, to whisk you away, on a 7 hour trip through history, art, archeology and the basic Rome way of living that is just a delight and so interesting to experience. This Tour of Rome will start off with a stop in the famous Piazza Venezia a famous circular square constantly beaten by hundreds of cars and vespas and motorini (what we call mopeds and bikes). While horns are blaring in the traffic, passerby's always in a hurry and the famous Italian charm for hand gestures and raised voices the main constant, all you will notice is the monumental structure overlooking the Piazza. A monument dedicated to Italy's last king Victor Emanuel the Second, and resting place of the Unknown soldier. A fallen soldier from WW1 that is laid to rest there to honor and tribute every Italian soldier who's fought and fallen in every war old or recent. You can notice An imposing horseman in a giant bronze statue, overlooking the entire city center, to magnify the importance of the Italian Kingdom in its glory days. And just above is a building, temple-like in structure, with white marble steps and columns, placed on top of one of Rome's legendary hills. Italian flags hanging on it's ends. This monument is really hard to miss. Fun fact: The monument of Victor Emmanuel, officially called Altare della Patria (the Altar of the Nation) is also known simply as the wedding cake. For it's distinctive shape, built in white, marble layers, one floor after the other. Resembling a big white wedding sheet cake. This altar shares its space with Capitoline Hill, Capitol Hill or simply known as Campidoglio. It is one of Rome's 7 hills placed in between Campus Martius and the Roman Forum, and it is head of the Roman Government, With an incredible square commissioned by Pope Paul the third and created by Michelangelo himself in the 16th century. But Capitol Hill does not only hosts Rome's City hall, the Mayor's office and the Capitolini Museums (which offers a vast amount of marble artifacts, artwork and other curiosities from Roman times) but it offers AMAZING VIEWS of the city below, on one end of the hill is Piazza Venezia, Campus Martius and modernization, on the other the Ancient citadel of the Roman Forum. A perfect balance between present and the past. Speaking of Roman Forum, you absolutely go across Via dei Fori Imperiali, an ancient way in Rome that crosses this part of town, with the Forum's archeological site on both sides. Envision Temples, Market places, Marble buildings and life conducted in these squares centuries ago. This is where Roman Senate would reunite, where citizens would gather to worship archaic divinities and conduct their business. To keep the Ancient Roman theme alive, walking straight through the ancient Roman Forum you will arrive at the Colosseum The one and only Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheater An ancient, imposing structure built to delight and entertain the people of Rome, in the prime of its years. With gory, cruel hunts and gladiator fights but also fun scenes of Naval battles, where they would fill the Arena with water and float around in ships. A colossal building in the heart of Rome, to gather the people, to bring people together. We absolutely recommend a stop here. But Rome is full of wonderful things to see, in a fun, intuitive and entertaining way. With squares, steps and fountains and churches. Take Piazza Navona for example The most extravagant of Rome’s Square, adorned with the fountain of The Four Rivers by Bernini, and the church of his rival, Borromini. Visit Piazza Della Rotonda, where you can see the Pantheon, the best preserved and enchanting monument of ancient times. The Spanish Steps A wonderful square, world famous for the beautiful stair case that comes down from Trinità dei Monti with beautiful views of  Via dei Condotti, intersecting with via del Corso. The most "In" streets for shopping, with great boutiques and haute couture. Walking along the narrow streets you can find other curiosities such as the mighty Pantheon on Piazza della Rotonda, the once temple dedicate to All the Gods, the Ancient Roman building is now an active Catholic church. Then, of course there is the Trevi Fountain, a little further down the streets. Make sure to take tons of pictures of this magnificent fountain that attracts so many people from all over the world, in that small square. This private tour is a whirlwind of emotions! You'll be catapulted into the Middle Ages, Ancient Roman Times, then to Renaissance times, and back to Roman times. With a stop to grab a quick bite to eat, if you like. Your tour driver will know the perfect place. In fact, near the end of the tour, you will have to make another mandatory stop at the Aventine Hill, another majestic hill, hosting picture perfect views of the Eternal City. Then head to the Circus Maximus, where chariot races were performed in imperial Rome, as we can see in one of the classic American movies, Ben Hur. At the end of the tour, your tour driver will take you wherever you like to be dropped off at, hotel or other. This itinerary can be tailored and can change, so it's not a strict preview. All this is just to give you a taste of all the wonderful places you could see during your time out on the streets of Rome. *Upon request, the icing on the cake would be to reserve one of our professional guides: if you want to enrich your activity, we highly recommend selecting the service of one of our expertise guides for the day!

Since the only known public entrance to Saint Peter's would be from all the way outside in the Square (for which the lines are usually very long) our guides have permission to enter the Basilica directly from inside the Vatican, after you've visited the Sistine Chapel! Visiting the Basilica other than with the guide would not be possible. Since it's entrance is free, it is usually very crowded, lines are very long not leaving enough time for you to visit it, if without a guide Since we have top level experts, the costs are appropriate to the quality of service. The most incredible beauty awaits! Visiting the Vatican Museums on your own, will allow you to visit the different wings , like Raphael's Rooms, Cortile Della Pigna, Belvedere, Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries or the Gallery of Maps. And the Sistine Chapel. Since the Basilica of Sain't Peter's has free access, they've devoted it's entrance directly from Saint Peter's Square, so there isn't a way to enter the Basilica from inside the Museums. Just know that depending on the number of visits in a day, some wings might be closed. But this won't matter at all, we can assure you, there is just so much to see, you'll hardly even notice! Last but not least, on this Rome and Vatican tour, the magnificent Sistine Chapel! This incredible masterpiece, Michelangelo's heritage. We don't want to say too much about it, because we don't want to spoil the surprise. Just know that you will have some time, inside this chapel, to take a moment. To reflect on the overwhelming beauty. Take a seat in one of the chairs placed at it's sides, or stand in the middle and look up, to study the different details of the scenes and stories that have inspired the artist. Then you'll head to the exit, walking along the famous spiral stairwell. Still in awe, after the incredible experience. I found this to be a great option for a last-minute visit to the Borghese! The guide was at the spot indicated on the map at the designated time to hand off the ticket and explain the entry process. Worth the extra money to get into the museum on short notice without having to wait on the ticket line, which was already long at 9 AM.

The 5 Best Borghese Gallery Tours In Rome [2022 Reviews]

The Borghese Gallery is one of the world’s most important art museums, containing famous masterpieces by Barocci, Bernini, Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael, Rubens, and Titian. However, with entry restricted to only 360 people at any one time, it’s also one of the world’s most exclusive.

The only way to ensure entry into this popular museum is to book in advance, and the best way to explore the gallery is on a Borghese Gallery guided tour. But there are many Borghese tours to choose from.

Some Borghese Villa tours focus on the gallery, while others also explore the beautiful gardens that surround the villa. The gardens are filled with neo-Classical temples and artworks that are almost as impressive as the exhibits within the gallery.

I’ve selected the 5 top-rated Villa Borghese tours to help you choose. Read through the reviews below and see which tour best suits your interests.

Borghese Gallery Tours In Rome Reviewed

#1 rome: borghese gallery and gardens skip-the-line tour.

  • Departure Point : Optional hotel pick-up or museum entrance, Piazzale del Museo Borghese
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Duration : 3 hours
  • Includes : English speaking guide, skip-the-line entry tickets to the Borghese Gallery, walking tour of the gallery, and audio headset

What’s more, the strict entrance policy means that the galleries are never too crowded, so you can take your time and learn all about the gallery’s many artworks from your knowledgeable guide.

The art inside comes from many periods, from an amazing mosaic of gladiators dating to c. 320 CE to much more modern masterpieces, such as the famous Venus Victrix sculpted by Antonio Canova between 1805 and 1808.

The villa was built for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who also commissioned many of the major works of art found inside. Most of the artworks he collected are displayed in the position he intended when designing the building.

Expand To See More See Less

The building itself, designed by Flaminio Ponzio following sketches by Scipione Borghese, is breathtaking. Its painted ceilings and ornate plasterwork rival those found in any palace across Europe.

You’ll explore the building in a group of no more than 15 people, enabling you to interact freely with your guide and learn more about the artwork and the building’s history.

Outside, you’ll also enjoy a walking tour of the beautiful gardens. The Villa Borghese Gardens are a popular destination for locals who want to enjoy the flowers in spring. There are picturesque lakes, neo-Classical temples, and many monuments.

Attractions within the park range from a 17 th -century “hen house” transformed into a faux fortress to a recently constructed replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre used for performances of his plays in both Italian and the original English along with other productions.

Tour Information & Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, #2 borghese gallery masterpieces & gardens: skip-the-line tour.

  • Departure Point : Piazzale del Museo Borghese
  • Departure Time: 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM (7:00 PM excludes garden tour)
  • Includes : English speaking guide, audio headsets, skip-the-line entry into the Borghese Gallery, and tour of the Villa Borghese Gardens

The Villa Borghese and its gardens are as much a work of art as the many exhibits within. They were built for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a powerful and rich patron of the arts.

Many pieces of art are positioned where he envisioned when designing this party villa. Artworks include Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne , Canova’s Pauline Bonaparte , Raphael’s Entombment of Christ , Titian’s Sacred and Profane Love , and Caravaggio’s Saint Jerome Writing .

Your guided tour of the gallery will enable you to learn about Cardinal Borghese and his passion for art. You’ll also discover the history of the Borghese family and its links to Napoleon Bonaparte and the Popes.

No Borghese tour is complete without a visit to the Villa Borghese Gardens. The gardens were originally Cardinal Scipione Borghese’s private park, but now they form the 3 rd -largest public park in Rome.

Within the park are many neo-Classical temples and fountains. The view from the Pincio Terrace is one of the best vistas in the Eternal City.

#3 full-day borghese gallery & colosseum and roman fora.

  • Departure Point : Piazzale del Museo Borghese & the Arch of Constantine
  • Duration : 6 hours
  • Includes : English speaking guide, headphones to hear your guide, skip-the-line tickets to the Borghese Gallery, and skip-the-line tickets to the Colosseum

With a Galleria Borghese guided tour, you’ll learn all about the Borghese family and their connection with the Popes and Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Borghese Gallery contains many masterpieces by famous artists, such as Rubens, Bernini, and Caravaggio. The famous neo-Classical sculpture of Bonaparte’s sister, Venus Victrix , is one of the highlights of your tour.

This masterpiece created by Antonio Canova is one of the most stunning portraits you’ll ever see.

The Villa Borghese Gardens are an attraction in their own right.

Within the formal gardens, you’ll find neo-Classical temples that occasionally use statues recovered from archaeological sites, such as the statue of Aesculapius in the Temple of Aesculapius.

The lakes and tranquil walkways provide an escape from the busy streets of modern Rome.

During the afternoon, your tour will explore the key monuments of Ancient Rome. The Roman Forum was the heart of Classical Rome.

It’s where elections were held and important announcements made. It was the meeting place of the influential during the classical period.

For many, the Colosseum is the most iconic extant structure from Ancient Rome. Built to hold up to 80,000 spectators, it still takes one’s breath away.

From the high galleries, you can shudder as you think of all the people who died here to entertain the masses.

#4 Rome: 3-Hour City and Villa Borghese Authorized Segway Tour

  • Departure Point : Near Saint Angelo Bridge
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 3 PM, 5 PM
  • Includes : English speaking guide, 3-hour Segway rental, ponchos, and helmet

Unlike other Borghese Gallery tours, this Segway excursion provides a guided tour of the fantastic gardens surrounding the Villa Borghese Princiana, which form the 3 rd -largest public park in Rome.

There are many unique monuments and buildings within the park, including the Villa Borghese and La Fortezzuola.

La Fortezzuola began life as a “hen house” in the 17 th century. Toward the end of the 18 th century, its façade was transformed so that it resembled an ornate fortress. After a fire in 1919, the building was abandoned.

However, in 1926, the sculptor Pietro Canonica moved in and repaired the faux fortress, transforming part of the structure into exhibition rooms. Today, the building houses the Canonica Museum.

Your tour guide will lead you to great viewpoints where you can enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Eternal City. You’ll also see ornate follies constructed in the 18 th and 19 th centuries in imitation of classical temples, such as the Temple of Diana and the Temple of Aesculapius.

Rolling around the park on a Segway makes this one of the most memorable Borghese gallery tours in Rome.

#5 Borghese Gallery Reserved Entrance Ticket

  • Departure Point : Ticket Office, Museo Borghese
  • Departure Time: 11:00 AM, 3 PM
  • Duration : 2 hours
  • Includes : Reserved entrance ticket

The Borghese Gallery is homed inside the Villa Borghese Princiana, a party villa built by Scipione Borghese, an Italian Cardinal and patron of the arts.

Scipione Borghese amassed a great art collection, and later members of his family added other great works of art.

Because of its size and the immense value of the works of art, only 360 visitors are allowed inside the villa at any one time. This means that tickets frequently run out, and you should take advantage of a reserved entrance ticket to guarantee entry.

The building is a work of art in itself. Admirers of classical proportions and palatial structures will love to tour Villa Borghese. You’ll be amazed by the beautifully painted ceilings with ornate plasterwork.

Inside you’ll find priceless masterpieces painted by Caravaggio and Titian alongside examples of courtly dress preserved over the ages and displayed here on mannequins.

The villa’s formal gardens extend across 198 acres and constitute Rome’s 3 rd -largest public park. The park took on its current design during the 18 th century and contains many breathtaking views, such as the Temple of Aesculapius built between 1785 and 1792 that overlooks a picturesque pond.

The park also contains many unexpected features, such as a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and a large water clock.

Rome Travel Guide

Some visitors to Rome plan their visit specifically around the Vatican and related locations, such as the Sistine Chapel. However, you’ll still want to be aware of accommodations, the expected weather, and even other attractions you may want to visit while visiting Rome.

As you learn more about vacationing in Rome, you may want to plan for a few extra days to truly get the most out of your time in this ancient city.

What attractions are you looking forward to the most when you visit Rome? Where do you plan on staying? We’d love to hear about your plans! If you’ve already visited Rome, let us know what you enjoyed the most.

Airports & Entry

When headed to Rome, you’ll most likely land at the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport . This airport is the largest in Italy. Most foreign tourists, no matter their final destination in Italy, land in Rome. This means the airport is usually very crowded. However, this airport is also fairly easy to navigate.

To visit Italy, you must have a valid passport that has at least six months remaining before expiration. You can stay up to 90 days in the country for business or tourist reasons without a visa so long as your passport is valid.

Planning Tips

Before you start packing your bags, you’ll want to know how to make your trip easier and how to get the most out of your time in Rome. These top 5 planning tips can help you do just that.

Tip #1: Dress Appropriately for your Visit to the Vatican

Because the Vatican Museums , as well as the Sistine Chapel, are religious places, you’ll need to dress appropriately. Your shoulders, knees, and abdomen should be completely covered.

Your clothes should not have inappropriate graphics or sayings. If security personnel believe you are dressed inappropriately, you won’t be allowed in. This is true even if you are on a private tour.

Tip #2: Plan Everything in Advance

There are millions of visitors to Rome and the Vatican every year. This means that some of the attractions you are looking forward to may be sold out or closed by the time you arrive.

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are a great example of this. If you are traveling to Rome around the time of religious holidays, these attractions may be closed to the public as well as to guided tours.

While many guided tours have backup plans in the event a scheduled location is closed unexpectedly, you should research your trip to make sure the places you wish to visit should be open.

Tip #3: Choose a Tour of the Vatican

If you plan on visiting the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and other popular places within Vatican City, purchasing a guided tour is a good idea.

The lines for general admission to many of these places can stretch for blocks and getting in may not be guaranteed. With a guided tour, like the ones we’ve reviewed above, you are guaranteed access so long as it isn’t closed for religious reasons. Plus, you will be able to skip the long lines.

Tip #4: Only Carry What You Need

While this is true wherever you are visiting within the city of Rome, it is especially true when visiting the Vatican. Large bags, umbrellas, camera tripods, and other cumbersome items aren’t allowed within the Vatican Museums and related locations.

You can store them in the cloakroom provided for free, but you may end up having to leave your tour early to retrieve them before closing time. It’s best to carry only what you need when touring the Vatican.

Tip #5: Visit on a Wednesday

If you’re looking forward to seeing the Pope and to the papal audience, you’ll want to plan your visit for a Wednesday.

While there are occasional deviations from the Wednesday schedule, you’ll most likely be able to see the weekly message on that day.

In fact, the Papal Audience and Vatican Museums tour we reviewed above guarantees you will see the Pope as part of the papal audience as long as he delivers his message on schedule.

Restaurants & Eating Out

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Right? There is no better time to follow this rule then when it comes to dining. Eating out in Rome is probably much more affordable than you would’ve thought.

Of course, you’ll want to savor a true Italian pizza. The best place for this is La Gatta Mangiona. This casual restaurant is well known for its thin crust pizzas and may very well have been the start of the pizza craze in Rome.

If you’re looking for lighter fare, stop by Il Forno Campo de’ Fiori . The restaurant serves up delicious soups, sandwiches, salads, and light snacks.

The bakery next door produces delicious biscuits, pastries, and more. Both the restaurant and the bakery offer take out so you can avoid the long lines.

While there are many places to get your fill of gelato in Rome, the Gelateria del Teatro is one of the most popular. You’ll find all the traditional flavors and occasionally come across an experiment or two. Have you ever tried raspberry and sage gelato?

NOTE : When it comes to leaving a tip at a restaurant, it’s important not to be too generous. Tipping more than 10% is often frowned upon.

Also, you’ll rarely have an opportunity to leave a tip when using a debit or credit card. You’ll want to have a few euros on hand for tips as well as small purchases.

Nightlife & Entertainment

The nightlife in Rome is just as mixed as the combination of both ancient and modern seen all over the city. The Antica Enoteca has one of the most extensive wine lists in Rome and offers a rustic and casual atmosphere. If you’re looking for a traditional bar, you’ll want to stop by the American Bar at the Hotel Forum.

When it comes to cocktails, Rome offers ingenuity and imagination. Take the Carbonara Sour at Co.So Cocktail & Social, for example.

This delicious cocktail might be a little different, containing black pepper and egg whites along with other ingredients, but is one of their most popular drinks.

If cocktails aren’t your thing and you’d rather sit down with a craft beer, stop by Brasserie 4:20. This small pub is warm and welcoming, and so is their list of craft beers on tap, plus a selection of whiskeys, bourbons, and other fine drinks.

Getting Around

While there is a great public transportation system in place, it’s often easier to get around in Rome by walking. You can get nearly everywhere you need to go by lacing up your tennis shoes and going for a stroll.

If you’re going a longer distance, you might want to take a bus. A 100-minute bus ticket is quite affordable, as is the day pass.

Renting a car in Rome isn’t a good idea. Those unfamiliar with the city can have a difficult time maneuvering. If car travel is best, you’ll want to take a taxi. You can only grab a taxi in designated areas.

Hailing for a cab outside of these areas is frowned upon. Taxis can be on the expensive side but if you’re going a fair distance and you’d rather not take a bus, a taxi can be quite effective.

Accommodations

When it comes to accommodations in Rome, you’ll see inexpensive hotels and luxury resorts. The cheaper places to stay are often farther away, very small, or offer very few amenities.

Most of these hotels aren’t recommended for tourists. There is no shortage of luxury hotels in Rome, however. The G-Rough is located inside a 16 th -century palazzo and epitomizes the history and art that Rome is famous for.

While staying at a luxury resort is ideal, it may not always be feasible. A great mid-range hotel that offers many of the benefits of a luxury resort without the price tag, is the Nerva Boutique Hotel .

With just 19 rooms, guests can enjoy modern design, great food, as well as a great location.

July and August are the hottest months in Rome. The average temperature is somewhere around 78°F. For many, the 48°F average temperature in Rome in January is very mild.

However, if you want to enjoy Rome with better chances of great weather, you’ll want to visit in the spring or the fall.

Attractions

Rome is full of attractions you can visit around your tour of the Vatican. The National Roman Museum is family-friendly and houses many interesting artifacts.

The Basilica of San Clemente is not just a church, but also an archaeological site. The newer building at the entry level dates back to the 12 th -century while you can head downstairs to the original basilica built in the 4 th -century AD.

If you’d like to see some of the more ancient attractions around Rome, you have several options. The Roman Forum is the location where Romulus made the founding of the city of Rome official.

It was once the epicenter of Roman life. Ostia Antica is just 25-minutes away by train. This location was once a thriving center of commerce. Today, you can explore over 100 acres of ancient shops, baths, temples, and even apartment buildings and houses.

If you have some extra time, a visit to the Tuscany region should not be missed. With beautiful hilltop towns and wineries you should take a day trip to Tuscany . If might be the highlight of your trip!

The Vatican’s Treasures: Both Seen & Felt

A tour of the Vatican is a must if you’re planning a vacation to Rome. The arts, architecture, and history contained within Vatican City simply can’t be experienced anywhere else.

Whether you choose a short, 3-hour tour to see the basics or you opt for the VIP Vatican Experience, it’s guaranteed this is a trip you’ll never forget.

Borghese Gallery Guided Tour Information

The Villa Borghese, built for the infamous Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V was designed as a personal gallery to show off the Cardinal’s art collection. You will find out on the tour how the original collection was obtained by often nefarious yet highly original means!

Known as one of the first ‘art collectors’, the Cardinal amassed a stunning collection of work by  Caravaggio  and was one of the primary sponsors of  Bernini  which explains why the museum features numerous masterpieces by the two amongst others.

Today the collection houses many magnificent pieces by not only Caravaggio and Bernini but also many other great works spanning the 15th to the 17th century by artists such as  Titian ,  Raphael , and  Antonello da Messina , together with  an exquisite collection of ancient sculptures .

The gallery is contained within the beautiful Villa Borghese where the surrounding gardens are an attraction in themselves and actually make up the third biggest park in all of Rome.

Exhibitions In The Borghese Gallery:

Just some of the awe-inspiring pieces you will be introduced to include:

  • Apollo and Daphne by Bernini.
  • Pauline Bonaparte by Antonio Canova.
  • The Sacred & Profane Love by Titian
  • Deposition of Christ by Raphael
  • David & Goliath by Caravaggio
  • And many, many more…

There are plenty of bus routes that reach Villa Borghese. You can catch 10 different buses that will get you to the general vicinity: 61, 117, 119, 120, 150, 160, 490, 495, 590, 628, and C3.

Tram number 2 stops just outside Villa Borghese.

Amongst the park’s many entrances, the best one, if you want to visit The Borghese gallery, is the Via Pinciana entrance.

Tickets & Prices

Find out which of these Villa Borghese tickets – now the Borghese Gallery – is right for you.

  • Borghese Gallery – Basic ticket.
  • Borghese Gallery (Fast Track) – Fast Track entrance tickets to the Borghese Gallery.
  • Guided Tour – (Skip The Line) – 2-hour guided tour of the gallery plus skip-the-line entrance.
  • Roma Pass – Explore some of Rome’s greatest attractions with this combi-ticket. 72h or 48h pass with entrance to two venues of your choosing (20+ to choose from), plus unlimited public transport (excl. trains) for the duration of the card.

Full Price

This is the ticket option most people visiting the Borghese Gallery use. It applies to the majority of people, as only a few are eligible for the discounted rate.

You purchase a ticket for a specific date and a time slot that lasts for two hours – at the end of your time slot, you must leave the gallery. The ticket is only valid for your chosen date and time, though you can pay an extra fee for cancellation insurance if you would prefer.

Important Ticket Information

  • You have to book a time slot, which lasts a strict two hours.
  • A maximum of 180 people can enter during each time slot; booking in advance is essential.
  • The gallery is closed on Mondays.
  • Temporary exhibitions may increase the entrance price.
  • There is an additional reservation fee of €2 when booking to visit the museum.

Discounted

The same rules for the full-price ticket apply to the discounted rate ticket, but this lower price is available to people between the ages of 18-25. Must be EU citizens, but includes non-EU countries with terms of reciprocity.

The Borghese Gallery is one of the attractions listed in the Roma Pass, which covers transport, entrance to one or two attractions, and reduced ticket prices for others. You can choose either a 48-hour or 72-hour pass – the first includes entrance to one of the major tourist attractions in Rome, while the latter includes two.

Additional Ticket Information

  • You are given a physical card, which you will need to show at the ticket office for validation.
  • The Roma Pass is valid for either two or three days and expires at 11:59 p.m. on either the second or third day (depending on your pass length).
  • The pass is activated as soon as you use it – this can be at either an attraction or on public transport. This doesn’t change the expiry time, so it is more cost-effective to activate your Roma Pass in the morning.
  • For your free ticket, head to the entrance of the attraction, not the ticket office.

For Galleria Borghese, we recommend booking tickets in advance. Due to the pieces of art available at the gallery, not only tourists but also locals are eager to go. Book your tickets online in advance.

I highly recommend booking the guided tour, making the investment, and having a guided walk through the museum. The experience is much more enhanced and worth the price.

The experience is not as rewarding without a guide. I have gone with and without a guide, and I would even redo the guided tour. There are also audio guides.

There is no specific dress code, but visitors are asked to dress appropriately for the museum’s atmosphere.

As for the best time of day to visit the attraction, the mornings might be better, but each time slot has a maximum limit of visitors, so none of the exhibits are too full.

The Galleria Borghese staff will guide you throughout the rooms, making sure there are only a limited number of people in each one. Don’t worry. Their system assures that everyone will get to visit every room.

What to See and Do

Villa borghese gardens.

Seps in the Villa Borghese Gallery gardens

Escape into the beautiful landscape gardens of Villa Borghese, and discover a peaceful oasis right in the center of Rome. There are a number of Classical-style sculptures and monuments dotted around the lovely gardens, which only enhance the beauty of the predominantly 19th-century English landscape garden.

Water Clock

The charming and innovative 19th-century water clock is a popular attraction with visitors. Its unusual design and unique location within the park give the water clock an almost storybook quality.

Temple of Asclepius

The Temple of Asclepius at Villa Borghese in Rome

Despite appearances, this temple is a relatively recent addition to Villa Borghese, built in 1786. It’s one of the most stunning attractions in the park – the view of the temple sitting overlooking the center of the lake is undeniably lovely.

Bike Riding

Take a stroll through the park or even the city with quadricycles or even a regular bike. Available at a low cost,  and perfect to get around without getting too tired. There are a few stands around the park. If you plan on doing this, bring a picture ID.

Villa Borghese Pond

You can rent a small boat for a little ride among ducks. Rides stop after sunset, which is also the best time to visit. Also, if you were wondering, dogs can also ride on small boats. This is a must in my opinion, children love it, and it gives everyone a chance to relax.

Pincio Terrace

The Pincio is a beautiful ‘terrace’ located within the park, offering stunning views of the city. This terrace is a popular spot for tourists. The Pincio is located at the highest point of the park and features a large fountain and several statues, as well as a small, beautiful garden.

Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the terrace. Most people come here at around seven, right in time for sunset, and there are a few food trucks that sell small snacks, beverages, and a few other things. The Pincio is a must-visit spot for anyone visiting Villa Borghese.

Villa Medici

Villa Medici is a stunning Renaissance villa located within Villa Borghese, offering visitors a glimpse into the history and culture of Italy. You can take a guided tour of the villa or explore on your own, and there are also several exhibitions that change throughout the years.

Each year the villa selects a group of artists who can use all of the villa’s facilities and have a year to work on a project that will later be exhibited throughout the gallery.

A zoo located within Villa Borghese, home to a variety of animals from all over the world. Visitors can wander around and explore the grounds. Unlike other zoos, Bioparco tries to make a comfortable environment for the animals. They have large spaces and few limits. Visitors are observers and guests in the animal’s habitat.

Galleria Borghese

An amazing attraction inside Villa Borghese. Home to an impressive collection of art and sculptures, including works by Bernini , Caravaggio , Raphael, and Titian. Visitors can take a tour of the museum’s various rooms, which are divided by artist and period.

This is a must when in Rome.

Visits last two hours, except for the last time slot, which lasts an hour and 15 minutes. This gives you enough time to visit the gallery calmly and explore every piece of art. You will not have the time to analyze every piece of art, but any piece in the gallery is worth your while.

borghese gallery tour

From sculptures, mosaics, and paintings, there is so much to see that you are bound to want to go back. The must-sees at the museum include Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne sculpture, Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath painting, and Raphael’s Entombment of Christ painting. The museum also houses a collection of ancient Roman sculptures, including the iconic Sleeping Hermaphrodite.

Feel free to bring any personal belongings with you to the museum; just keep in mind that backpacks, large bags, and any other large objects and food are not allowed and will be stored in the museum storage area, which is free of charge. Small purses and fanny packs can be brought into the museum.

Galleria Borghese has a small café that offers a selection of snacks and drinks. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase classic souvenirs. They have an amazing selection of art books and replicas.

If you love taking pictures, rest assured that cameras are allowed in the gallery. As in most museums, you cannot take pictures with flash, and videos are frowned upon.

Surroundings

After visiting Galleria Borghese, visitors can explore the vast Villa Borghese Park, which is home to beautiful gardens, fountains, and sculptures. There are also several other cultural attractions located within or around the park.

Other Attractions

  • Puppet Theater – a fun show perfect for children.
  • Globe Theater – a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe.
  • Casa del Cinema – vintage cinema.
  • Carlo Bilotti Museum – free museum inside Villa Borghese’s Orangery.
  • Casina di Raffaello – a children’s play area housed in a charming old building.
  • Pietro Canonica Museum – a free art gallery focused on sculptures.

Did you know that: 7 Interesting Facts

  • While today, the Villa Borghese is considered to be located at the very heart of Rome, it was once an area covered with vineyards.
  • Villa Borghese covers a total land area of 80 hectares, making it one of the largest parks in all of Rome.
  • In the 16th and 17th centuries, Cardinal Scipione Borghese was the owner of Galleria Borghese; his uncle was a pope. There were no boundaries he wouldn’t cross to get what he wanted.
  • In the gallery, you can see a sculpture of Paolina Borghese Bonaparte. This was forbidden to be seen, as she appeared naked and ‘vulgar’. Tour guides at the museum would accept cash tips to allow tourists to see the sculpture behind closed doors.
  • Some of the pieces of art have Roman numerals or Arabic writing. This was to help guide museum visitors in the early 20th century.
  • Bioparco was one of the first zoological gardens to be established with entertaining the general public in mind.
  • The grounds are home to several buildings that all have wildly different purposes: there are museums, a puppet theater, a cinema, and even a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.
  • 1580. The Borghese family acquires the lands that will later become Villa Borghese.
  • 1605. Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V, began to bring his ambition to create the largest gardens in Rome since antiquity to life.
  • 1613. The garden villa, now known for hosting the Borghese Gallery, is built to hold Cardinal Scipione Borghese’s vast art collection.
  • 1800s. The gardens are redesigned into an English landscaped garden, a popular style in the 19th century.
  • 1903. Villa Borghese was bought by the Italian State and formally opened to the public.
  • 1911. The zoological garden, now known as Bioparco, is opened.
  • 2003. A replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater is constructed.

The Borghese Gallery and gardens are certainly worth visiting. You can explore the world-class gallery and enjoy the spectacular landscape gardens, one of the largest parks in Rome, plus many other attractions.

On average, people spend around 2 hours at Villa, but there are so many things to do here that you may wish to spend half or even a full day here. If you want to visit multiple attractions, then 4-5 hours or repeat visits are recommended.

The Villa Borghese Park is open every day from dusk to dawn.
