Travelling to the UAE

Vaccinated travellers to the UAE are not required to present a negative result of RT-PCR test for COVID-19 at the airport of departure. However, those who are not vaccinated must either present a valid, negative result of an RT-PCR test conducted within 48 hours before arrival or a recovery certificate (containing a QR code) from COVID-19 issued within 30 days before departure, if they were infected with the virus.

• Those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19, can either present a valid, negative result of an RT-PCR test conducted within 48 hours before arrival, or present a recovery certificate (containing a QR code) from COVID-19 issued within 30 days before departure, if they were previously infected with the virus.

Rules for Dubai residence visa holders, visitors and tourists

All UAE residents, visitors and tourists can travel to Dubai without an approval from GDRFA or ICP . However, visitors and tourists have to meet the visa requirements before travel, if they are not eligible for visa on arrival. Check visa requirements to visit the UAE .

Requirements

Passengers travelling to Dubai from all countries, including the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC), must fulfil one of the below requirements at the airport of departure:

• present a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate, reflecting that the passenger is fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) or the UAE. The certificate must contain a QR code.
• present a valid negative COVID-19 test certificate that should be based on a molecular diagnostic test intended for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid for SARS‑COV‑2 viral RNA. The certificate must be issued within 48 hours from the time of sample collection by an approved health service provider and must contain a QR code.
• present a valid medical certificate from the relevant authorities that the passenger has recovered from the novel coronavirus COVID-19, issued within one month before the date of arrival. The certificate must contain a QR code.

If you are arriving from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh or Egypt, you must get your certificate from one of the labs listed in the  designated laboratories (PDF, 150 KB) .

Exemptions for the COVID‑19 PCR test and the vaccination certificate

The following people are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test or a vaccination certificate at the departure airport:

• all UAE nationals returning to Dubai from any country
• non‑UAE nationals accompanying a first‑degree UAE national family member
• domestic workers accompanying a UAE national sponsor.

 The following people are exempt from being tested for COVID-19:

• children below 12 years of age
• passengers with moderate to severe disabilities.
• Moderate or severe disability includes neurological disorders and intellectual or developmental disabilities. For example: Acute spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Ataxia, Autism spectrum, Bell's palsy, Brain tumours, Cerebral aneurysm, Cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy and seizures.
• All other passengers, including those who are visually impaired, have a hearing impairment or are physically challenged, must hold a negative COVID‑19 RT‑PCR test certificate as per the requirements.
• There may be specific test exemptions in your country of origin and final destination. Please check the  requirements  before you travel.

Transiting through Dubai

• Transiting passengers are not required to present a COVID -19 RT-PCR test certificate unless it is mandated by their final destination.
• Passengers booked with Dubai Connect/Stopover packages must follow the same PCR test requirements as applicable for passengers arriving/entering Dubai.

You do not need a negative result of an RT-PCR test for COVID-19 if:

• you are fully vaccinated or
• you are under 16 or
• you hold a recovery certificate (containing a QR code) from COVID-19 issued within 30 days before departure.

Additionally, you will not need to quarantine when you arrive in Abu Dhabi.

On the other hand, you must present a negative result of an RT-PCR test for COVID-19 done 48 hours before your flight to Abu Dhabi if:

• You are not fully vaccinated and do not hold a COVID-19 recovery certificate
• You are transiting in Abu Dhabi and a test is required at your final destination.

If you are required to take a PCR test and unable to present proof of your negative COVID-19 PCR test, you will not be permitted to travel.

On arrival at Abu Dhabi

It is no longer mandatory to undergo an RT-PCR test upon arrival in Abu Dhabi. However, one may undergo the test to keep his/her ‘Green Pass’ active on the Al Hosn app in order to get access to public places in Abu Dhabi.

The test costs AED 40. Additionally, passengers do not need to quarantine themselves on arrival.

Transiting in Abu Dhabi

 You do not need a COVID-19 test certificate or a vaccination for transiting the UAE, unless your final destination requires it.

Children under 16 are exempt from the vaccination and testing requirements to fly to Abu Dhabi neither on arrival nor during transit; unless the same is required for final destination.

Travelling from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and other emirates

You can travel to Dubai or any other emirate in the UAE after arriving at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Abu Dhabi accepts pre-arranged visas issued by other emirates in the UAE.

You can travel to Dubai by any means of transport. No test or app is needed to travel from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

Categories Exempt from Tourist Visa

Flying Emirates to or through Dubai? Here’s what you need to know

From the tests needed to the documents you'll have to show, here’s helpful information for flying to dubai as a resident, tourist or transit passenger.

Dubai is open for travel. The emirate has been welcoming tourists since July.

Emirates Airlines has resumed flights to and from several cities around the world, and is now flying to more than 70 destinations worldwide, with Conakry and Dakar the latest additions to the network, and the Bangkok route restarting on September 1.

Things on Emirates flights look a little different now than they did pre-pandemic, so even if you’re a frequent flyer with the Dubai airline you may be wondering what to expect if you’re flying anytime soon.

From what documents you need before you travel to the service to expect on board, here’s everything you need to know before you take your next flight to Dubai.

Do I need permission to fly with Emirates?

If you are a Dubai resident, then you will need permission from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) before you can fly into Dubai. You will not be able to book your Emirates flight without this permission, which can be requested here . The application will ask for your Resident File Number, which can be found on your visa.

Non-Dubai residents no longer need permission to return to the country and can book with Emirates to fly home via Dubai. Tourists can also book flights with Emirates with no additional permission needed before travelling.

What documents do I need to have before I fly?

Dubai residents need their approval from the GDRFA as well as a valid UAE residency visa. Travellers with visas that have expired while they've been out of the country can return without penalties. All other UAE residents need the same documents that have always been required to fly in or out of Dubai – passport and residency visa.

Tourists must check what type of visa they need to travel to Dubai. The emirate is issuing visas on arrival and visit visas that should be applied for before flying, your nationality will dictate which one you need.

Travellers, including transit passengers, must complete a health declaration form that Emirates staff will request at check-in. Ideally you will fill this in and print it off before you fly, however forms should be available at most airports if you haven’t managed to do so.

Travellers should also download and install the Covid-19 DXB Smart App before flying and be ready to show negative coronavirus test results.

Will I need a coronavirus test?

Everyone arriving into Dubai needs to take a coronavirus test before they fly, this applies to tourists and residents of all emirates.

Travellers must show a negative Covid-19 PCR test certificate before being accepted on any Emirates flight. These tests results cannot be substituted for laser test results or any other type of test.

“Other test certificates including antibody tests and home testing kits are not accepted in Dubai," clarified Emirates.

Certificates must be for a swab test that is taken a maximum of 96 hours before the departure time of flights to Dubai, although this period may be less, depending on where you are travelling from so check the requirements before flying.

Children and passengers who have a moderate or severe disability are exempt from the test requirement.

Where can I be tested?

The UAE government has specified a list of approved clinics where passengers flying from some countries – including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh – must take their Covid-19 tests.

Travellers flying to Dubai from most other countries can choose to use a recommended laboratory from the same list or be tested at any “trusted and certified laboratories” in their country of origin. For travellers flying from the UK, NHS test results are being accepted on Emirates flights, however this could change in the future.

Can I show test results on my phone?

No, you cannot show an email or digital version of your test results. This differs from procedures in place inside the UAE for crossing into Abu Dhabi from other emirates where a digital report is accepted.

For boarding an Emirates flight, travellers must “bring an official, printed certificate – text message and digital certificates are not accepted,” says the airline.

What’s changed on the flight?

Travellers can expect a few changes on Emirates flights. All passengers will be given a complimentary hygiene kit containing a mask, gloves, hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes.

You’ll need to wear the mask for the duration of your flight, except for when you are eating or drinking. Children under six years old and customers with certain medical conditions who have completed a preflight medical information form may be exempt from wearing masks.

Temperatures are likely to be taken before you board your flight and the boarding process has also changed, with passengers now boarding the aircraft in small groups, and with those seated at the back of the aircraft boarding first.

There is no more duty free service on flights and all reading materials – such as complimentary newspapers and magazines – have been removed. In Economy class, don’t expect menu cards – instead cabin crew wearing personal protective equipment will tell travellers what is being served. Food and snacks are also being served in sealed packages, so expect a slightly different meal than what you might have been given pre-pandemic.

If you're flying business or first class, you'll have to do without social areas such as the A380 lounge and there is currently no access to on-board shower spas.

Travellers with Dubai as a final destination will be given ‘quarantine undertaking’ forms during flights. These must be completed to hand to the authorities upon arrival at Dubai International Airport.

The forms confirm that travellers will self quarantine until they receive any outstanding Covid-19 PCR test results, and will isolate for 14 days if results are positive. It’s also a good idea to keep your boarding pass in a safe place, you may be asked for it as you navigate through the airport in Dubai.

What should I expect at Dubai International Airport?

Arriving passengers should hand their completed quarantine forms to Dubai Health Authority officials. All passengers will pass through thermal scanners where temperatures will be checked. Some travellers will have to undergo another PCR test when they land in Dubai. This is dependent on various factors, including symptoms and coronavirus case numbers in the country you’re travelling from. Travellers who do need to be tested will not need to pay for the process.

Passengers who take a PCR test on arrival must self isolate until they receive their results. “You may need to take another Covid-19 PCR test on arrival. If you take a test at the airport, you must remain in your residence or hotel until you receive the test result,” explains Emirates.

What happens if I have a connecting flight?

Transit passengers can also expect to pass through thermal scanners, and anyone showing signs of Covid-19 will be tested for the virus. Once cleared from the Medical Centre, passengers can continue to the departure gate.

If this causes travellers to miss a connecting flight, Emirates will rebook passengers on to the next flight and provide accommodation at Dubai International Airport Hotel if required. However, if test results come back positive for transit passengers, they will need to follow the advice of the Dubai Health Authority and quarantine in Dubai for 14 days.

All travellers are advised to check the latest requirements for their country of origin and their intended destination regularly before travelling because rules and restrictions can change with very little notice.

We get it: Everyone wants to bring six pairs of pants, a pillow and enough jackets to ward off Jack Frost on their journeys. However, unless you’re a super-packer and an expert in vacuum-sealing your items, odds are you’re going to have to pack a little less.

This is especially true during air travel. If you’re heading off on a flight with Emirates and wondering how much you can take with you, we’re here to help.

Let’s talk about Emirates’ baggage allowance, how much you can bring and the airline’s size requirements.

Emirates baggage policy

Like all airlines, Emirates has limitations on how much luggage you can bring on your flight. However, unlike others, Emirates’ policy doesn’t just rely on the total number of pieces that you bring.

Depending on where you’re flying, you may either have a weight limit or a piece limit.

For flights from the Americas and Africa, you’ll be subject to a piece limit, which is the same standard you’ll find on U.S. airlines. This means you’ll be able to bring a specific number of bags to check in with you, each of which must not exceed a weight limit.

On other routes, you’ll instead fall under the weight limit, which doesn’t restrict how many bags you check. Instead, you’re judged solely on how much the totality of your luggage weighs. This can be helpful if you have a number of smaller bags that you’re traveling with (or ones you’ve purchased during your trip).

Emirates baggage sizing for checked bags

The check-in baggage sizes on Emirates are going to depend on where you’re flying.

Flights with a piece limit: 59 linear inches (all dimensions added together).

Flights with a weight limit: 118 linear inches.

Emirates checked bag policy for the Americas and Africa

If you’re flying from the U.S., you’ll be subject to the piece limit on Emirates for checked luggage. How many pieces you bring and their weight will depend on your fare class.

Note that flights within the Americas or from the Americas to Europe are subject to slightly different policies .

Emirates checked bag policy for Asia, the Middle East, Oceania and Europe

Which Emirates checked baggage sizes you’re allowed is going to depend on the fare that you’ve booked.

Those who have elite status with Emirates enjoy an additional baggage allowance on flights.

Of these, only economy class has several different “buckets” into which you may fall. All other classes have a single weight standard.

Special: 44 pounds.

Saver: 55 pounds. 

Flex: 66 pounds. 

Flex Plus: 77 pounds.

Be aware that no single bag can weigh more than 70 pounds using the weight concept.

As you can see, it’s important to do your research before your flight to determine your allowance since the Emirates check-in baggage size varies drastically.

Emirates also maintains a separate carry-on bag policy. The weight limit for your bag will depend on your fare class.

Emirates extra baggage fees

If you have more luggage to check than you’re allowed, it’s possible to pay extra to bring your bags. The costs for this are going to vary based on your routes, how much you need and whether you purchase the extra allowance online.

For example, if you’re traveling on a flight from the Middle East to Europe — which uses weight to determine your luggage — you’ll be able to purchase an additional 2.2 pounds of luggage for $25 at the airport.

Some travel credit cards come with annual travel credits that can cover incidental airline fees. These can include charges for checked luggage.

If you’re traveling from the Americas or Africa, which rely on the piece concept, your costs will be different. For example, purchasing an extra bag on a flight from the United States to Dubai will cost you $225 at the airport. The total weight allowance for that bag is either 50 pounds (for economy/premium economy) or 70 pounds (for business/first).

Emirates’ website also notes that you’ll save a significant sum of money by purchasing excess luggage in advance. Depending on where you’re going, the savings can vary between 35% and 60%.

The bottom line

Traveling is stressful enough without getting hit by unexpected charges. Do your homework beforehand to verify your baggage allowance so that you’ll always be prepared.

If you’re flying on Emirates, you’ll want to figure out whether the airline’s weight concept or piece concept applies to your itinerary. From there, your fare class is going to dictate the amount of baggage that you’re able to bring.

Expect the cost of your airfare to continue to rise, an aviation trade group and industry heads warn

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The cost of your next flight is likely to go up.

That’s the word from the International Air Transport Association, which held its annual meeting Monday in Dubai, home to the long-haul carrier Emirates.

While carriers recover from the groundings worldwide from the coronavirus pandemic, industry leaders told journalists that there are several costs likely to push those ticket prices ever higher.

Part of that comes from worldwide inflation, an ongoing problem since the pandemic started. Jet fuel costs, roughly a third of all airline expenses, remain high. Meanwhile, a global push for the aviation industry to decarbonize has more carriers fighting for the little amount of so-called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, available in the market.

“The airlines will continue to do everything they can to keep costs in control as much as possible for the benefit of consumers,” said Willie Walsh, the director-general of the the International Air Transport Association, an industry-trade group. “But I think it’s unrealistic to expect that airlines can continue to absorb all of the costs. ... It’s not something we like to do, but it’s something we have to do.”

Also pressuring the industry is a pandemic hangover in aircraft production as well, they say. Carriers now keep older planes that burn more fuel flying longer. There also aren’t enough new aircraft to expand routes and increase supply to bring down overall prices.

That warning comes as the IATA estimates globally, airline revenue will reach nearly $1 trillion in 2024, a record high. There will be 4.96 billion travelers on airplanes this year, with total expenses for carriers reaching $936 billion — another record high.

But industry profits also are expected to be nearly $60 billion this year.

In particular, Emirates, a main driver for Dubai’s economy, saw record profits of $4.7 billion in 2023 off revenues of $33 billion.

The Emirates’ results track with those for its base, Dubai International Airport . The world’s busiest airport for international travelers had 86.9 million passengers last year, surpassing numbers for 2019 just before the coronavirus pandemic grounded global aviation.

The airport now plans to move to the city-state’s second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches in the next 10 years in a project worth nearly $35 billion .

Tim Clark, the airline’s president, obliquely acknowledged that Monday by saying that he didn’t want people to “get boxes of tissues out and play the violins” when warning that the industry’s profit margins sit in the low single digits. However, he contended that as airlines have grown larger and carriers consolidated, cost savings have quietly been passed onto consumers now able to book flights across the world.

“It is quite amazing that ticket prices are where they are today,” Clark said. “I think the value-for-money proposition that the consumers have had the benefit from for many decades is something that is one of those hidden bits of the narrative.”

Yvonne Manzi Makolo, the CEO of RwandAir, also highlighted the taxes and fees imposed on carriers by the countries they operate in. She specifically cited those paid by carriers flying out of African nations as “already ridiculous.”

If you're traveling with carry-on luggage and/or a personal item, you'll need to adhere to size restrictions in the same way you do with checked bags . These rules include the dimensions of your carry-on bag and, in some scenarios, even the weight.

What size luggage is a carry-on?

While carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline, several major carriers go by these dimensions.

Airlines calculate carry-on luggage size measurements using two methods:

• Height by width by depth:  Most – but not all – airlines measure bags by inches or centimeters using this formula: height by width by depth, such as 22 x 14 x 9 inches. (Note: The dimensions listed below, which are given according to that formula, may differ slightly from the way each individual airline formats its size requirements.)
• Linear inches:  A few airlines have linear inch restrictions for carry-on baggage, meaning the airline gives one number for the total of all three dimensions. As long as the combined height, width and depth don't exceed that number, you're in the clear.

Can a 24-inch bag be a carry-on?

Yes, a 24-inch bag can be used as a carry-on suitcase when flying with the following airlines: Frontier, Southwest and Sun Country . However, if you're shopping for new carry-on luggage, it's best to opt for something that meets the requirements for most major airlines (22 x 14 x 9 inches or smaller).

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

Most major domestic airlines do not impose a weight limit on carry-on bags; however, several international airlines have weight restrictions for carry-on luggage and, in some cases, personal items.

Carry-on vs. personal item: What's the difference?

A carry-on bag is typically stored in a plane's overhead bin, while a personal item should fit under the seat in front of you. Most airlines allow economy passengers to bring one carry-on and one personal item – such as an underseat bag – at no extra cost.

The fee is often around $20 if you pay for your carry-on baggage at the time of booking; it costs a hefty $45 if you add a carry-on bag later – and up to $75 at the gate.

Note that if you're flying to or from Beijing or Shanghai, there is a 22-pound weight limit for a carry-on; for Singapore, there is a 15-pound limit.

There are two instances where the carry-on bag fee is waived:

• You're an elite member of the  FRONTIER Miles rewards program .
• You bought a specialty ticket like the WORKS bundle.

Also note that carry-on bag fees, which typically start at around $30, depend on your destination, and that prices are cheapest if you add baggage when you make your booking. You'll pay more to add it later, especially if you do so at the airport. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to purchase a checked bag instead of a carry-on.

If you booked a Blue Basic ticket, you're only permitted to bring a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. If you bring a carry-on bag, you will have to pay $65 to check it at the gate (or up to $180 if you've already checked two other bags). However, select customers with Blue Basic fares can bring carry-on bags for free. These include:

• Active U.S. military personnel
• Unaccompanied minors
• Customers flying to London

If you purchase a higher-class seat or if you reach Mosaic status on JetBlue's TrueBlue rewards program , you can also bring a carry-on bag for free on a Blue Basic ticket.

Spirit's carry-on bag fees vary between flights, but they tend to start at around $25 to $30 for U.S. domestic flights. If you need to bring carry-on luggage, it's always cheapest to pay for it when you first book your flight. It will cost you more to add a bag afterward – and at least double the initial fee if you do it at the airport.

The Sun Country Airlines fee for a carry-on bag is around $30 if you pay for it when booking, or more if you add it later.

There's one notable exception for carry-on baggage with United: Passengers with a basic economy ticket can only   take one personal item on board – no carry-on bag. This policy applies to travelers flying basic economy domestically or between the U.S. and Canada. If you have a basic economy ticket and are going to Central or South America (including Mexico) or taking trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flights, you can bring a full-size carry-on bag.

Aer Lingus' carry-on policy depends on where you're flying. For trans-Atlantic flights, you can bring one carry-on bag within the dimensions above, plus a small personal item for free. If you're flying within Europe on Aer Lingus, the rules are a bit different: You'll have to pay a fee to bring a carry-on with you on board, starting at 5.99 euros. However, you can check that same bag for free.

If you're flying Aer Lingus Regional (a service with smaller planes, flying mostly around Ireland and the U.K.), a smaller carry-on limit applies: 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches, with a weight limit of 15 pounds.

All Aeroméxico customers can bring a standard carry-on bag and a personal item on board. Be careful with the weight limit, though: For international flights or basic fare flights within Mexico, these two items combined cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. So, if your carry-on bag weighs 15 pounds, for example, your personal item cannot be more than 7 pounds.

While there's no weight limit for carry-on luggage, Air Canada says your carry-on bag should be light enough that it can easily be lifted into the overhead bin. Also note that airport purchases (for example, larger duty-free items) count toward your baggage limit.

Note that both your personal item and carry-on bag (referred to as "hand baggage") combined must not weigh more than 26 pounds if you're traveling economy. The weight limit is 40 pounds for premium economy and other higher-class cabins.

A variety of personal items (think a handbag and umbrella) are permitted as long as they fit under the seat in front of you; this includes any items purchased at the airport.

Cathay Pacific has shifted from a weight allowance to a piece allowance, and this policy varies by itinerary. Passengers are generally permitted to bring one carry-on bag plus a small personal item (and assistive devices like a walking stick), but it's best to check your booking carefully to confirm the exact allowance. You're asked to check in any baggage that's too heavy to lift into the overhead compartment.

Since easyJet is a budget airline, standard fares only allow customers to bring one personal item (called a "small cabin bag") aboard for free. Fees for standard carry-on bags are between 5.99 and 32.99 British pounds, depending on your destination and when you add an extra bag to your reservation.

The above rules apply to all economy passengers except those traveling from Brazil, whose carry-on luggage can weigh up to 22 pounds. Emirates only allows economy passengers to bring one item on board; whether you bring a carry-on bag for the overhead bin or a personal item to tuck under the seat, this bag must comply with the size limits.

Be aware that the 22-pound weight limit applies to both your personal item and carry-on combined. If your flight was booked through Iberia but is operated by Vueling, similar rules apply, but the size limits for your carry-on bags are slightly smaller.

The above rules apply to LowFare+ customers. Passengers who fly LowFare (comparable to Basic Economy fare) can only bring a personal item (underseat bag) measuring 15 x 11.5 x 7.5 inches.

Qantas 

Economy passengers can opt to bring a nonrigid garment bag measuring 45 x 24 x 4 inches (or 73 linear inches) instead of a standard 22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on bag. The above rules apply to all economy tickets and vary for higher classes on international and domestic flights with Qantas.

Qatar Airways allows passengers to bring multiple personal items provided they fit under the seat in front of you. Unlike with other airlines, laptops and laptop bags do not count as personal items and must fit within your main hand baggage allowance. For tickets issued in Brazil, the carry-on weight limit is 22 pounds.

Be careful: Qatar doesn't accept carry-ons longer than 20 inches, which is shorter than many other airlines.

Ryanair is a low-cost carrier, so unless you pay extra, you can only bring one small bag that fits under the seat in front of you, per the personal item guidelines above. To bring a larger carry-on bag, travelers need to purchase Ryanair's Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, which typically costs between 6 and 32 euros depending on your destination.

Most (but not all) Scandinavian Airlines fares allow you to bring one traditional carry-on bag, plus a personal item, which SAS calls an "underseat bag." There's one exception: Passengers traveling within Europe on the Go Light fare must pay for a larger carry-on bag. If you booked a Go Light ticket for intercontinental flights, a carry-on bag is included.

Singapore Airlines has an unusual method for measuring carry-on bags – the dimensions of the bag must not add up to more than 45 linear inches total. For example, a bag measuring 15 x 15 x 15 inches would be suitable. All passengers can bring one bag of this size, plus a smaller personal item. The personal item, whose dimensions are specified above, does not count toward the 15-pound carry-on limit.

Virgin Atlantic lets every passenger bring a carry-on bag, including children younger than age 2. You can bring a bag weighing no more than 13 pounds for your child, in addition to a collapsible stroller and/or car seat. Each passenger is also allowed to bring a handbag or small backpack, an umbrella, a walking stick and airport purchases. Take note: Laptops do not count as personal items on Virgin Atlantic and should fit into your main carry-on bag. There's no specific size limit on the other personal items, but bags or airport purchases should fit under the seat in front of you.

• Passports for children under age 16 are only valid for 5 years. 

Steps to Apply

1. fill out form ds-11 and print it.

Use our Form Filler tool  to fill out your child's form on a desktop or laptop computer and then print it. If you are experiencing technical issues with the Form Filler, download a PDF . 

Tips to complete your child's form :

• Do not sign your child's form until asked to do so by a passport acceptance agent or employee. 
• You can apply for a passport book , a passport card , or both documents.
• You may ask for a larger passport book with more visa pages, at no extra cost, by checking the 'large book' box at the top of the DS-11.

2. Get Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (and a photocopy)

Your evidence must be an original or replacement copy. The document must have the official seal or stamp of the office which issued it. You must submit one of the following documents for your child:

• Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
• Lists applicant's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
• Lists the parent(s)' full names
• Has the date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
• Has the registrar's signature
• Has the seal or stamp of the city, county, or state which issued it
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
• Certificate of Citizenship
• Please note you must also provide a document, such as a birth certificate, that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Full validity means the document is or was valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.

Paper only : You cannot submit digital evidence of U.S. citizenship such as a mobile or electronic birth certificate. You must submit physical evidence of U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the document. 

Returning your child's document : We will return your child's document in a separate mailing up to 8 weeks after you receive the new passport.

Tips for making a photocopy :

• Black and white (no color)
• Use 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper
• Use a single side of the paper

If you do not submit a photocopy, you must submit a second copy of your citizenship evidence. We will keep this copy for our records.

3. Show Your Relationship to Your Child

You must submit a document that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Examples include:

• U.S. birth certificate (also evidence of U.S. citizenship)
• Foreign birth certificate
• Adoption decree
• Divorce or custody decree
• A court order

Some documents, like a U.S. birth certificate, show  both  U.S. citizenship and parental relationship. These documents must be originals or certified copies (not photocopies).

You and your child may have different last names, as long as the document showing your relationship to your child lists your full name.

If your name is different than the one on the document showing your relationship to your child, submit proof of your legal name change.

4. Get a Photo ID (and a photocopy)

Both parents or guardians must bring a physical, photo ID and a photocopy of it. If your photo ID is from a different state than the state in which you are applying, bring a second photo ID. 

You must show at least  one  of these photo IDs:

• Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card 
• In-state, fully valid driver's license or enhanced driver's license with photo
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship 
• Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
• U.S. military or military dependent ID
• Current (valid) foreign passport
• Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
• Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
• In-state, fully-valid learner's permit with photo
• In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo
• Temporary driver's license with photo

5. Show More Documents (if both parents or guardians cannot apply)

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply in person with their child, you will need to show more documents.

Important : Submit  Form DS-3053  and other notarized statements within three months of signing them.

6. Provide a Photo

You must provide one photo with your child's application. Go to our  Passport Photo page  for photo requirements and to see examples of photos. 

• Do not attach or staple your child's photo to the form. The acceptance agent or passport employee will review the photo and staple it to your form.
• Some  passport acceptance facilities
• A company which offers photo services
• Home. Ask your friend or family member to take your child's photo. Print it on glossy or matte photo quality paper. 

7. Calculate Fees

When applying using Form DS-11, you will pay two separate fees - an application fee and an execution (acceptance) fee. You will pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State, and the execution (acceptance) fee to the facility which takes your application. 

• Add $60 to your application fee if you want  expedited service .
• Add $19.53 to your application fee if you want us to ship your completed passport in 1-2 days after we issue it.

*How to fill out your check and pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State. Please note you must pay a separate execution (acceptance) fee. 

Families may write one check or money order to the U.S. Department of State if they are applying at the same time. The check or money order must include the name and date of birth of each applicant.

8. Find Location to Apply

In the United States:

• Traveling in more than 3 weeks?  Go to a  passport acceptance facility  such as a post office, library, or local government office. Check with the facility to see if you need to make an appointment. 
• Traveling in less than 3 weeks?   Make an appointment  to apply at a passport agency or center.

In another country:

• Contact your  U.S. embassy or consulate .

9. Track Your Application Status

You can  subscribe to email updates  about your application status, and  learn more about each status update .

It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your child's application status is “In Process.” 

Frequently Asked Questions

How will you send my child's passport and supporting documents.

You will get multiple mailings. The number of mailings depends on what document(s) you asked for.

Passport Book : You may get your new passport and citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We will return the passport book using a trackable delivery service.

Passport Card : You may get your new passport card and your citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.

Both a Passport Book and Card : You may get three separate mailings:

• New passport book
• New passport card
• Citizenship documents

Contacting Us : If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks for your documents, call us at  1-877-487-2778  to report that you have not received your documents. 

If you want us to reimburse you for a lost supporting document, you must contact us within 90 days of the date which we mailed your passport. You will also need to provide a receipt to show the cost of replacing the document. 

Can I pay for faster delivery and return shipping?

Yes. You may choose one or both of the following shipment options:

• Delivering application to us : Pay for Priority Mail Express for faster shipping. The price for this service varies depending on the area of the country.
• Returning the passport to you : Pay $19.53 for 1-2 day delivery. This means you will receive your passport   1-2 days after we send it. Include this fee with your check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Do not submit a return envelope to us with postage pre-paid. 

You may receive your passport and supporting documents in separate mailings. If you are renewing a passport card, we will send it to you via First Class Mail. We do not use 1-2 day delivery services if you only applied for a passport card.

What countries require Form DS-3053 "Statement of Consent" to be notarized at an embassy or consulate?

In certain countries, a DS-3053 must be notarized at a  U.S. embassy or consulate  and cannot be notarized by a local notary public. Currently, these countries include:

Expedited: 2-3 weeks and an extra $60*

*Consider the total time it will take to get a passport when you are booking travel.  Processing times only include the time your application is at a passport agency or center.

• It may take up to 2 weeks for applications to arrive at a passport agency or center. It may take up to 2 weeks for you to receive a completed passport after we print it.
