Ford 6.8L (412.5 cu in) firing order — diagram & guide

Unlocking the engine secrets behind the ford 6.8l firing order..

A man is working on a ford engine.

Back in 1997, Ford introduced one of the most unique engines they ever put in high-capacity trucks and cargo vehicles – the 6.8-liter V10. The naturally aspirated engine shared quite a few components with the 5.4-liter V8, but it also had some distinctive design features that made any firing issues difficult to address.

So, wondering about the Ford 6.8L (412.5 cu in) firing order became somewhat standard, and most drivers struggle to find precise info to this day. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry – our team of automotive experts will guide you through the firing sequence and other relevant features to get your V10 truck running smoothly again.

Ford 6.8L Triton firing order

To cut straight to the point, the Ford 6.8L Triton firing order is 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9 and it’s a unique firing order that only appeared in this specific engine.

However, that’s still not enough for you to be able to track down the cylinders in order and replace faulty plugs or coils. That’s why we’ll also discuss the cylinder arrangement in upcoming sections to help you out.

For now, it’s also important to state that there are two versions of this engine – one with 2 valves per cylinder, and one with 3 valves per cylinder. Don’t worry, though, since the firing order has remained the same for both engine variations.

The only differences are in fuel consumption, power, and torque, but this also means that you’ll need separate kits for repairing any cylinder head damage for these two engine variations.

Ford 6.8L cylinder arrangement

Having in mind that this vehicle has 10 cylinders, it also has a unique cylinder order along with the firing sequence that’s characteristic of this powertrain.

So, removing the cover will reveal two sets of cylinders, precisely two cylinder banks on their respective engine sides. Looking at the engine from the radiator toward the rear, you’ll see the cylinders 1 to 5 ordered on the passenger’s side, and cylinders 6 to 10 ordered on the driver’s side.

You can easily track the distributor connections from here, so you won’t have any trouble applying the firing order and cylinder arrangement to do the necessary repairs.

Ford 6.8L vehicle applications

Over the years, the 6.8-liter Triton engine remained active in quite a few Ford Super-Duty trucks and cargo vehicles. It all started in 1997 and some models still have the same engine to this day, only with a 3-valve design.

So, it’s one of Ford’s longest-lasting truck engines, and these are the vehicles that have it under the hood:

  • Ford Excursion
  • Ford Motorhome
  • Ford F-450 Super Duty
  • Ford F-550 Super Duty

As one of the most unique high-displacement engines that Ford has ever made, the 6.8-liter V10 always confused drivers with its firing order. At least now you’ll have an all-in-one source of the firing sequence and the cylinder positions to help you figure it all out.

Our team stands by your side so make sure to use these pieces of information to make your engine run smoothly.

Ford 6.8L V-10 Engine

The 6.8 L (413 CID) SOHC V10 is a variation of the Modular family created for use in large trucks.

Bore size is 90.2 mm (3.552 in) and stroke is 105.8 mm (4.165 in), identical to the 5.4 L V8. Both 2-valve and 3-valve versions have been produced. The 6.8 L uses a split-pin crank with 72° firing intervals and a balance shaft to quell vibrations inherent to a 90° bank angle V10 engine. The engine’s firing order is 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9. The 2-valve version was first introduced in 1997, with a 3-valve non-VCT version to follow in 2005. The 3-valve engines were built alongside the 2-valve engines at Ford’s Windsor, Ontario LVL engine line, but moved production to the larger Windsor Engine Plant in 2009.

2-Valve: Vehicles equipped with the 2-valve 6.8 L V10 Modular engine include the following:

3-Valve: Vehicles equipped with the 3-valve 6.8 L V10 Modular engine include the following:

Key features and benefits:

One camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of each cylinder bank) operating 3 valves, 2 intake and 1 exhaust

SOHC design provides an advanced level of valve control

Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components mean greater reliability and fuel economy

Electronic throttle control uses electronic sensors instead of mechanical linkage to deliver seamless and consistent engine response

Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability and helps reduce NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) characteristics

Coil-on-plug ignition system design for high-mileage durability

90,000-mile spark plug maintenance interval with regular fluid and filter changes – under normal driving conditions

Fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from 10-cylinder operation to alternating 5-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or reach a service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road conditions

Ford V10 Firing Order

Known Problems:

The Ford V10 is a very reliable motor, and has been known to exceed 300,000 miles. It does have a few known problems:

Spark Plugs Shooting Out The The Heads:

Spark plugs on the V10 need to be checked and torqued if needed. They are known to come loose and shoot out of the cylinder head and strip out the threads. The repair involved reaming the spark plug hole, tapping it and inserting a helicoil to hold a factory spark plug.

You can find these repair kits at the bottom of this page.

Engine Running Rough / Misfiring:

If you’re having a problem with your V10 running rough / missing, it may be your Coil On Plugs (COP). The V10 has an ignition coil mounted on top of each spark plug. These can fail over time if they’re exposed to moisture. The ones closest to the firewall are the ones that most commonly fail (#5 & #10). The engine may not display a check engine light if it has a misfire. If you can get access to a diagnostic tool that can read the codes on the V10, you should be able to get codes from the bad COP. The code will directly correspond to the bad coil. The codes are:

You can find good deals on replacement coils at the bottom of this page.

Exhaust Manifold Studs Rust And Break:

The factory studs rust and break off causing an exhaust leak. The repair involves removing the remaining nuts to remove the exhaust manifold. Then a nut is welded on to the remaining stud. The heat of the welder usually causes it to come loose, and can be removed by using a socket on the welded nut.

Oil Consumption:

The V10 is known for using oil. It’s not uncommon for them to use up a quart of oil between oil changes.

If you have an oil leak from the drivers side of the engine block, it may be coming from the seal between the engine block, and oil cooler adapter.

First-time Evangelization Takes Place on a Moscow Excursion Boat

Another fact that made the event appealing is that—in contrast to meetings on public real estate—events on a boat need no government sanction.

(Moscow, Russia)—A riverboat excursion liner was the vehicle of choice for an on-the-water evangelistic event hosted by the Moscow-based Baptist congregation "Your Church."

The three-month-old church crowded 180 people onto a boat intended for 150 and treated them to salami sandwiches, mineral water, music and a variety of short talks on July 10th. The evening was brought to a close with a drama done by the 20-member, Russian-Baptist choir "Oasis" from Sacramento, California. In it, a disco murder serves as a backdrop to explain Christ's sacrificial death in our stead.

Kartavenko reported that the three-hour evening seemed to be over before it had hardly begun: "Who could imagine today's youth holding still for a three-hour church service?" he asked.

Approximately 60 percent of those present were considered to be unbelievers. All the invitations were done by personal connections and "on the grapevine;" no public advertising took place.

"People don't show up at concert halls in the summertime," the pastor explained. "Excursion boats are particularly well-suited for talking and getting acquainted," he said.

Another fact that made the event appealing is that—in contrast to meetings on public real estate—events on a boat need no government sanction. "This is very similar to renting a bus," Kartavenko explained. "Bus excursions are usually strictly private affairs."

Thanks to its success, monthly boat excursions are now in the offing for the remainder of the summer. Liners with as many as 250 seats are up for consideration. Kartavenko said that thanks to the wonders of electronic technology, the music can readily be heard from the shore and a boat without rigid walls is being also being considered. Bicyclists equipped with printed invitations reporting on the event could be stationed on boardwalks along the river.

Pastor Kartavenko is particularly proud of the fact that his tiny group of church members paid three-quarters of the excursion's costs. The choir from California covered the remainder. The costs, divided by 180, came to $13 US (305 roubles) per person. Future planning assumes that believing passengers will cover their own costs.

The congregation will need to avail itself of immobile real estate in wintertime, the pastor explained. He said large department stores have their own meeting halls and the group is hoping to hold evangelistic meetings in a major store owned by the firm IKEA.

Because IKEA is run by Swedish Protestants, Kartavenko hopes that the goodwill of its owners will be readily available. He is already thinking of Swedish cultural evenings with evangelistic input. Furniture viewing before or after the event would be highly likely.

Has anyone ever purchased the Moscow excursion on the 2 day Saint Petersburg port of call. Would love to see if anyone thought it was worth it. I would really like to do it.

I suggest you spend the two days in St Petersburg rather than taking the tour to Moscow. There is so much to see in St Petersburg that two days are hardly enough. It is a very long drive to Moscow and you would not have much time in the city - not enough to see even the highlights.

Three days in Moscow is enough to see and enjoy the best sights the Russian capital has to offer. Moscow is over 850 years old and in all these centuries it has acquired a great deal of cultural and historical heritage, which offer stands side by side to features of a modern metropolis. On this three-day tour in Moscow you will of course see the Kremlin – the historical kernel of the city which is now the official residence of the Russian president. You will also visit one of the country's most recognisable symbols – St Basil's Cathedral, plus the beautiful Novdevichy Convent and the Tretyakov Gallery - a treasure trove of Russian art. You will also see some of the monuments of the Soviet era such as the Moscow Metro and the VDNKh Exhibition Centre, where leading artists, sculptors and architects have managed to embody the political ideology of the time in the complex’s style.

All excursions are run by experienced, licensed guides who will show you Moscow’s most beautiful places and tell you about their wonderful history and legends about them.

  DAY1 | MUST-SEE MOSCOW SIGHTS

excursion v10 firing order

  • Red Square – Moscow's and Russia’s main square, where the Victory Day Parade is held annually in May.
  • St Basil’s Cathedral (including interior) – undoubtedly one of the most recognisable cathedrals in the world. Its fairy-cake like domes are unmistakeable.
  • Lenin’s Mausoleum – here the founder of the Soviet Union still lies embalmed 90 years after his death. He was briefly joined by Stalin, but Stalin's body was buried behind the mausoleum during the de-Stalinisation period.
  • Aleksandrovsky Gardens – these beautiful gardens run along the northern wall of the Kremlin, where once the River Neglinnaya flowed before being diverted underground – previously the kremlin was surrounded on all sides by water. There are many interesting memorials here to historical figures.
  • Zaryadye Park - thanks to the creation of this wonderful new park in the very centre of Moscow, the beautiful churches of Ulitsa Varvarka are no longer hidden away and new views of the kremlin and river have been opened up.
  • Christ the Saviour Cathedral (including interior) – this is Russia’s main cathedral and one of its largest. It was rebuilt after the fall of the Soviet Union on the site of the original, which was destroyed on the orders of Stalin to make way for a giant Palace of the Soviets. However the palace was never built and instead there was an open-air swimming pool here during the Soviet period.
  • Bolshoi Theatre - this is one the most famous ballet theatres for in the world. It is a symbol of Russian culture and national pride. Its name though rather unglamorously translates as Big Theatre.
  • GUM Department Store – this grand shopping centre is another famous symbol of the city.
  • Ulitsa Vavarka – this is one of Moscow’s oldest surviving streets and it has the highest concentration of old and historic buildings in the whole city. You will find here St Babara’s Church (in honour of which the street is named), St George’s Church, the architectural ensemble of the former Znamensky Monastery, the English Court (an early English embassy) and the Romanov Court (the family estate of the Romanov family before becoming the ruling dynasty).
