Just a few months ago, tickets to see the Arctic Monkeys would have been yours for a couple of quid - now they are rock gold dust, with touts falling over themselves outside The Academy to get their hands on them. But for the lucky few who managed to beg, borrow, or blag their way into this brief Manchester appearance, it was definitely worth it as they delivered the best performance this year. They may have the shy, shuffling demeanour of teenage boys on a first date. But put these four young lads from Sheffield on stage and the atmosphere is truly electric. Rarely has a new act been built up to such gigantic proportions - their recent album drew comparisons to The Beatles, no less, when it became the fastest-selling debut in British chart history. However, here at last, is a band that merits the hype.

Anticipation Even before they arrived, anticipation was in the air of a venue so packed the sweat seemed to be dripping from the ceiling as fans waited for a first glimpse of this reclusive new act. On stage, just a few chords from number one hit When The Sun Goes Down was enough to send them into overdrive as they chanted every word. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor drew similar raptures. And no wonder - here is a band that sounds even better live than on their perfectly-crafted album. Lead singer Alex Turner has the rough-edged vocals and hard-faced swagger essential to any rock-star-in-training - reminiscent of a young Liam Gallagher. Put his talent alongside a live set that crackles with energy and you can see why fans love the new Monkeys on the block. Their poetic lyrics have impressed critics, their ability to make rock music raw and interesting again has thrilled fans, and their internet success has made headlines.

Reputation But, never mind their reputation as stars of the i-Pod generation - it is as a live act that they really impress, worthy of a place alongside Britain's best. Co-stars on this yearly NME tour of new music hopefuls worth a mention were We Are Scientists, a New York indie trio whose impressive new material is just bubbling under the surface at the moment but should make it big this year. But, after the excitement of the Arctic Monkeys, the headline act Maximo Park, were a disappointment - sounding at best average and, at worst, as though they were trying too hard to impress. The night belonged to the Monkeys. Let's hope they stay longer next time they're in town - the only problem could be getting hold of those tickets.

Arctic Monkeys announce first live dates since 2014

The Sheffield band are expected to release their sixth album later this year

Arctic Monkeys have announced their first live dates since 2014. The Sheffield band will play a number of European and American festivals this summer. The sole UK appearance announced so far is a headline slot at Glasgow’s TRNSMT festival on 1 July.

The four-piece start their run at Barcelona’s Primavera Soundon 2 June . Other European dates include the Netherlands’s Best Kept Secret (8 June) and Finland’s Flow (11 August). The group have announced one US appearance, at Firefly festival in Delaware (14–17 June).

Arctic Monkeys are expected to release their sixth studio album later this year. They went on hiatus after headlining Reading festival in 2014, with frontman Alex Turner telling NME it was the “perfect place to leave things for a while”. In 2016, they teased work on a new album via a series of gnomic Instagram posts, and last September bassist Nick O’Malley confirmed that progress was underway for a planned 2018 release.

The as-yet untitled album follows 2013’s AM , which reached No 1 in the UK charts and featured singles including Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? and the Grammy-nominated Do I Wanna Know?

During the band’s break, Turner released Everything You’ve Come to Expect , the second album with his other band the Last Shadow Puppets. Drummer Matt Helders contributed to Iggy Pop’s 2016 album Post Pop Depression , which also featured Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. The band’s debut, 2006’s Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, was recently revealed to be the biggest-selling Mercury prize winner of all time.

How SZA became a Glastonbury headliner

“I was quiet in high school and relatively unpopular, so being noticed is not something that I’m used to,” SZA once said. The American singer, whose music combines elements of neo soul, RNB and hip hop, might have won four Grammy awards (and been nominated for 24), a Brit for Best International Artist and an Oscar nod – All the Stars, her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar from Marvel’s Black Panther, ultimately lost out to Lady Gaga’s Shallow – but reports suggest that she remains an introvert, an artist more interested in bettering her craft than becoming a household name.

But after tonight, when the 34-year-old headlines Glastonbury – Britain’s, and arguably the world’s, most prestigious music festival – she might not have much choice. A headline slot on the Pyramid Stage is Britain’s highest musical honour, an opportunity that can push an already-huge artist into the stratosphere (just look at Stormzy, or Arctic Monkeys). 

SZA (real name Solána Imani Rowe) will walk out onto Worthy Farm all too aware of the naysayers – those who argue that two chart-topping albums, multiple accolades and sell-out tours aren’t enough to warrant the honour. Rounding off the Sunday night of the greatest show on earth will not be storming British rock anthems – legends like Sir Elton John, David Bowie and The Who have filled the slot in the past – but SZA’s elegiac, stripped-back love songs, particularly beloved by Gen Z (and Barack Obama, who featured her song Snooze on his summer playlist last year).

After becoming the first female artist to be signed by Top Dawg Entertainment in 2013, SZA’s path to the top accelerated. She featured on songs with 50 Cent and Chance the Rapper, before earning her first major-label deal with RCA Records in 2017; collaborations with Doja Cat , Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar followed. In the early years of her career, she wrote hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna, becoming more famous thanks not only to her music but a combination of funny, unfiltered posts on social media and private relationships (she briefly dated superstar Drake in 2009). 

Born in St Louis, Missouri and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey – where her hero, Lauryn Hill, lived just a few miles away – SZA has spoken widely of how her parents’ encouragement and faith motivated her. Her mother, an executive at telecommunications company AT&T, is Christian, while her father, who worked as a producer at CNN, is Muslim. She is still a practicing Muslim, and has said previously that Islamic ideas “will never leave me, those make sense in my spirit. It’s the way that I connect with God.” 

Glastonbury signals a new milestone in SZA’s career – after last night’s headline slot at BST Hyde Park, no less – but also a shift in the festival’s demographics and intentions. The 2024 festival is the first in the event’s history to be headlined by two women (following Dua Lipa’s slot on Friday), prompted by boss Emily Eavis’s commitment to championing female talent.

SZA becomes the third black woman to headline the festival, after Skunk Anansie’s Skin in 1999 and Beyoncé in 2011, and, arguably, its first purely RnB headliner. Beyoncé, armed with colossal smash hits such as Crazy in Love, Irreplaceable and Single Ladies, had already eschewed the confines of genre and crossed over into the mainstream. It’s not a reach to suggest every one of the 150,000-plus people present in her crowd knew the words to at least four or five songs. SZA, in comparison, is critically-acclaimed and hyper-successful, but doesn’t have as many world-conquering hits; even her biggest single, Kill Bill, is no Crazy in Love in terms of reach.

Reports suggest that SZA was booked for the top spot after numerous household names dropped out. Talks with Madonna, a lifelong dream headliner for the Eavis family, fell apart over finances: both her own paltry pay packet – Glastonbury famously pay considerably less than other festivals – and the massive cost of bringing the Queen of Pop’s career-crowning, globe-trotting Celebration Tour to Worthy Farm. Long-standing rumours that jazz legend Stevie Wonder would make a triumphant return to the site for the first time since 2010 collapsed amid reports of his ill-health; another Stevie (Nicks), of Fleetwood Mac fame, continued her historic shunning of the festival by opting to headline (the much more lucrative) BST Hyde Park instead. 

Above all, it was Taylor Swift’s pesky, record-breaking Eras tour that came in between the Eavis’s and their dream line-up. Originally billed to perform in 2020, before Covid came knocking, fans’ hopes that Swift would choose this year to make her debut on the farm were shattered when she announced three dates across the same weekend in Dublin, Ireland. The only silver lining, apparently, is that Swift’s team reportedly remain open to her headlining the festival in the future – once the Eras tour has finally drawn to a close.

Selecting SZA to fill the gap is, then, a risk for Eavis, who knows that old-school punters and music snobs the world over are waiting with bated breath (and damning online verdicts) to see if the US star delivers. A risk it may be, but it is also a welcome vote of confidence from the festival – a sign that, away from old-hat headliners like Coldplay, The Killers or Foo Fighters, newer acts have a chance of reaching the plum spot. After all, isn’t Glastonbury’s greatest strength its diversity of audience, with some watching on site in Pilton, even more catching a glimpse into its varied musical offerings from the comfort of their TV or social media? Those who argue that SZA is not commercial enough to headline the festival feels at odds with Glastonbury’s spirit. 

Similar snobberies were aimed at artists who went on to perform some of Glastonbury’s most historically entertaining and innovative sets: Jay Z in 2008, famously after Oasis’s Noel Gallagher had labelled the US rapper’s booking “wrong” for the festival which had a “tradition of guitar music”; Stormzy in 2019, watched by millions on iPlayer; or Billie Eilish in 2022, which this paper declared a “masterclass in modern pop”. 

As ticket prices rise year-on-year (this year’s event cost £355), Glastonbury’s organisers will also inevitably be dreaming of a new intake of punters. Like Coachella in the US, Glastonbury is gearing up to become a global event attended by people – mostly, it must be said, young people, who have decades of spending-potential in them – from all over the world, meaning its headliners must reflect global (and youthful) tastes. Only time will tell if SZA, with her soft, hazy vocals and relaxed stage presence, is the artist who heralds the change.

Emily Eavis has defended Glastonbury ’s line-up this year after criticism for a perceived lack of rock acts on the main stages.

For 2024, dance-pop titan Dua Lipa , pop-rock staples Coldplay and US R&B star SZA are set to headline, with country-pop icon Shania Twain taking the legends slot. Among the other artists playing the main stages include Little Simz , Burna Boy , Disclosure , Jungle and The Streets .

Some fans have complained about the lack of rock, but co-organiser Eavis – the daughter of Glasto founder Michael – has said that the main line-up simply reflects what’s going on in the music industry.

“I think the line-up reflects what’s happening in the music world at the moment – there aren’t a lot of new rock acts to choose from if I’m honest,” she told PA . “Hopefully that will emerge again, my heyday was 1995 with Pulp and Oasis and Radiohead – and that was great, but music changes all the time and right now this is where we’re at.”

She explained that, when the line-up does lean more towards rock, the festival is criticised then too. “Every year, we’ve been criticised for being too rock, too grime, too hip hop, too pop – it’s just part of our year. Generally, it’s not from the public – everybody’s really happy and excited to be here,” she said.

Last year, the Pyramid Stage saw a more rock-oriented set of headliners in Arctic Monkeys , Guns N’ Roses and Elton John , while US desert rockers Queens of the Stone Age headlined the Other Stage. However, in 2022, Billie Eilish , Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar headlined, while 2019 saw The Killers and The Cure alongside Stormzy .

Back in 2008, when Jay-Z became the first rapper to headline the festival, the decision to give rap such a prominent position on the line-up was criticised by some rock fans – including Noel Gallagher , who said: “Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curveball in on a Sunday night you go ‘ Kylie Minogue ?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”

While rock might not feature as prominently this year, there’s still plenty for rock fans to get their teeth into. PJ Harvey is playing the Pyramid Stage tonight (June 28) at 18:00, while the Other Stage will see the likes of Idles , Bloc Party and Soft Play across the weekend.

Elsewhere at the festival, which runs until Sunday (June 30), artists including Gossip , Fontaines D.C. , Kim Gordon , Skindred , Ocean Colour Scene , Mannequin Pussy , and The Vaccines will be playing.
