Cinnamon and star anise perfume my memories of Vietnam, a country that lodged itself into my palate in fragrant, frenzied bursts. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks. 

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary. 

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

Before you start planning your trip, read on to learn about the best times to visit Vietnam for hiking the majestic, mountainous rice terraces of Sa Pa, cruising the limestone marvels of Ha Long Bay, and avoiding the rainy monsoon season.

The high season in Vietnam varies according to the region, so you’ll always be able to find a place that feels more secluded from the bustle of crowded beaches or cruise ships. Wet season attracts fewer crowds, says Matthews, which falls from May to October in the north, September to May in the central part of the country, and May to September in the south. 

Visiting during this time has plenty of perks, as you’ll likely be able to save on accommodations and travel costs. Popular restaurants and tours will be less overrun with tourists, offering a rare opportunity to better immerse yourself in the local culture as you tuck into bun cha on a sidewalk stool. However, bursts of rain and cloudy weather can dampen any plans to hike in Sa Pa or cruise along Ha Long Bay — two quintessential experiences you won’t want to miss. 

There are also an abundance of places that remain less crowded throughout the year, says Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay — the resort itself is one of them, nestled in a private cove of Nha Trang that became my personal definition of paradise. Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz. 

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities. 

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April. 

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train. 

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators). 

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season. 

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns. 

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts. 

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Vietnam in July is smack in the middle of the rainy season.

Don’t cancel your plans, though!

Just because it is the rainy season, doesn’t mean that it is raining all of the time! There are plenty of clear, sunny spells between downpours. 

You know the scene from Forrest Gump where he is in Vietnam and says, “One day it started raining, and it didn’t quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin’ rain… and big ol’ fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways.” You know this one: 

It’s not quite that dramatic, however, one thing you can definitely expect when you come to Vietnam in July is rain. 

Some areas are more rainy than others, and we will get into that more in depth. 

North Vietnam Weather in July

Hanoi and its surroundings will be wet and warm this month. July falls right in the middle of summer monsoon season. Days are hot, humid and rainy. July and August are the wettest months, with heavy but brief downpours, usually in the afternoon. This doesn’t mean constant rain, but you should be ready for daily downpours that can be heavy.

Temperatures range from 26°C to 34°C (79°F to 93°F), mostly hovering around 30°C (86°F), sometimes climbing higher, so it is always warm. The humidity is also quite high, making the air feel warmer than it actually is. When it rains, you may get a brief respite from the heat, but not hugely. 

My recommendation for you is if you’re headed to Northern Vietnam during July, just embrace the unpredictability of the weather. Pack light, breathable clothing, a sturdy umbrella, and waterproof gear for your adventures (you can also get all of these in Hanoi). 

Central Vietnam Weather in July

This part of Vietnam is where you will want to go if you want the best chances for sunny, dry days. 

Central Vietnam, like Da Nang and Hoi An, are at an interesting crossroads of weather patterns this month. July typically means the beginning of the transition to wetter months, but it is still mostly dry.

In cities like Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, July still has plenty of sunshine, with the occasional rain showers as the month goes on. 

The temperature is toasty, often ranging from the mid to high 30s°C (85-95°F), with humidity on the higher side.  The sea breeze along the coast, especially on the beaches of Da Nang , can offer a nice little reprieve from the heat.

Rain, when it arrives, usually does so in brief, heavy bursts, often in the late afternoon or evening. They are quite refreshing and won’t really ruin your day’s plans. In fact, afternoon rains come at a perfect time to take a break from laying in the sun on the beach.

Southern Vietnam Weather in July

If you’re going to Southern Vietnam in July it means you will be embracing the heart of the rainy season – Don’t let that dampen your spirits!

This region experiences a more pronounced wet season with daily rain expected. The showers are usually heavy but short, often providing a break from the heat.

In cities like Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, expect temperatures to hover around 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 89°F). The heat is a constant, accompanied by high humidity levels that can make it feel even warmer. 

However, the frequent rain showers may cool you down slightly. These showers are typically short-lived, occurring mainly in the afternoon or evening, leaving most of the morning and early afternoon clear and sunny.

What is cool about this region of Vietnam during the rainy season is that the rain transforms the landscape. Everything is green and bright. While southern cities (mostly) deal with the rain efficiently, be prepared for flooding in streets and alleyways.

If you’re planning a vacation that finds you in Southern Vietnam in July – go into it with an open mind. Embrace life here by enjoying outdoor activities and sightseeing in the mornings and early afternoons, then heading to cafés, museums, or indoor attractions when the rain starts.

Rainfall in Vietnam in July

As you learned in the section above, July is right in the middle of the rainy season in both the north and the south. When it comes to rainfall, here is what you can expect this month:

Northern Vietnam: Around 14 to 16 rainy days in the month.

Central Vietnam: Relatively dry, with 10-12 days of rain often in the form of short, heavy downpours that clear quickly

Southern Vietnam : Approximately 22 to 23  days of the month will have rain. This is characterized by heavy afternoon showers.

Air Quality in Vietnam in July (AQI)

Checking the air quality of your vacation is probably not something you are used to. But when it comes to traveling in Vietnam, this is definitely something to pay attention to. 

For some context, Vietnam is dealing with significant air pollution challenges. In 2021, it ranked 36th out of 118 countries for having the dirtiest air. The main contributors to this problem are vehicles, factories, construction, agriculture, artisanal production, and inadequate waste management. When talking about the air quality, you will hear people refer to the AQI. That stands for Air Quality Index. There are color ranking and number rankings as well:

Now, a week-long vacation in Vietnam will likely not give you any long term health effects. However, it might contribute to the enjoyment of your trip. When the air is particularly bad, you can feel it, see it, and smell it. If you have underlying health issues like asthma it might be smart to make sure you have medicine, or make sure you wear a mask.

That being said, the month of July is a “better air month” in Vietnam. Here is what you can expect from different areas:

Northern Vietnam: The air quality tends to improve a bit during this time because the frequent rains help settle the dust and pollutants. It’s generally a relief after the higher pollution levels experienced in the cooler months. You’ll find the air feels fresher, especially after those afternoon showers.

Central Vietnam: Places like Da Nang and Hoi An are known for their pretty decent air quality year-round, and July is no exception. Thanks to the coastal breezes and less industrial activity, you can expect clearer skies and cleaner air, making those beach days even more enjoyable.

Southern Vietnam : In this part of the country, July’s air quality can be a mixed bag. The increased humidity and rain do wash away pollutants, but on drier days, urban emissions can make the air feel a bit heavier. It’s generally good, but on days with less rain, you might notice the difference, especially in busier city areas.

Pros and Cons of Traveling to Vietnam in July

Holidays in july.

July doesn’t have any major national holidays. But it is possible you will catch some sort of village or neighborhood festival or celebration at a temple on your travels.

July in Hanoi is in the thick of the summer heat and humidity. The weather is often punctuated by frequent rain showers, that are most common in the afternoon or early evening. This means you should try and schedule any outdoor tours or activities in the mornings. 

Despite the potential discomfort from the heat and humidity, July offers the opportunity to see Hanoi in a lush state, with the city’s parks and lakeside areas looking particularly green and full after rainfalls.

If you’re thinking of visiting Ha Long Bay in July, be prepared for the full heat of summer! 

It’s pretty warm this time of year, with daytime temperatures usually hovering around 30°C (86°F). Nights are a bit cooler, but it still stays around 25°C (77°F). Plus, it’s quite humid, which can make it feel even hotter. 

You’ll definitely want to pack light clothes and lots of sunscreen.

Absolutely. Nha Trang offers a mix ofcity life and calm beach vibes. It is a popular tourist destination for Vietnamese and foreigners, which means there are lots of hotel options, good food, and entertainment.

I actually really like Nha Trang and during certain times of the year think it’s better than Da Nang and Phu Quoc Beaches!

July in Nha Trang can be quite humid, with humidity levels often around 70-80%. This tropical moisture can make the days feel quite warm.

It still kind of has that undiscovered feel (it won’t last long though).

Heading to Phu Quoc in July? You’ll be landing right in the middle of the rainy season, so expect a mix of sunshine and showers throughout your stay.

Absolutely. Sapa’s landscapes and the opportunity to interact with its diverse ethnic communities are worth it alone. Trekking through the hills to visit local villages and markets is one of the most popular things to do in Sapa. Yes, it is touristy, but for a good reason!

SAPA WEATHER JULY

Curious about the average temperature in Sapa in July ?

Temperatures in Sapa during July are cooler than much of Vietnam, ranging from about 15°C (59°F) at night to 25°C (77°F) during the day. The climate is refreshingly mild, which is perfect for hiking and exploring the outdoors.

July in Sapa sees moderate humidity levels compared to the rest of Vietnam, generally around 85%. The moisture in the air can make the cool temperatures feel a bit chillier, especially in the evenings and early mornings.

Visiting Da Lat in July? You’re in for a pleasant surprise! Unlike the sweltering heat found in much of Vietnam during the summer, Da Lat offers a cooler, more temperate climate. 

Daytime temperatures here tend to hover around a comfortable 20°C to 23°C (68°F to 73°F), dipping slightly cooler at night. While it is the rainy season, the showers in Da Lat usually come in the late afternoon and are quite manageable, often leaving the mornings clear and fresh—perfect for exploring the city.

Honestly, you will probably want a jacket for the evenings!

DALAT ITINERARY: A PERFECT JULY IN DA LAT

A well-planned itinerary is key to enjoying all that Da Lat has to offer in July. Start your visit with a morning at the Dalat Flower Gardens, where blooms are vibrant despite the season. Follow this with a trip to the Bao Dai Summer Palace to soak in some history and architecture. In the afternoon, head to the Valley of Love for a leisurely stroll or paddle boating amidst picturesque scenery.

My favorite thing to do is go on a canyoning trip through Da Lat’s waterfalls and rivers.

The cooler days of July are ideal for hiking to Lang Biang Peak, where the views of the surrounding highlands are excellent. For a more relaxed day, consider a visit to the Truc Lam Zen Monastery, accessible via a scenic cable car ride over the pine forests, providing a peaceful escape and panoramic views of Tuyen Lam Lake.

Mui Ne in July

Mui N is famous for its sand dunes and beautiful beaches. July in Mui Ne is particularly appealing if you want adventure and beach relaxation time.

Vietnam serves up a generous dose of Southeast Asian magic at any time of year, but some seasons are easier for travelers than others.

A lot depends on what you are looking for from your trip – if it's time on the beach on the central coast, you probably want to stick to the drier months from February to June, before the peak summer crowds arrive; if you're here to go trekking in the highlands, October to March is the optimum season.

It's important to be aware that the weather can vary widely as you travel around Vietnam. The country spans 1650km (1025 miles) from north to south, taking in tall mountains in the north and flat, tropical wetlands in the Mekong Delta . In the north, it can be positively chilly in winter; from December to February, the highlands around Sapa can see snow while the Delta basks at 25°C (77°F).

July and August are the top months for beach lovers

The hot, sticky high season from July to August is the busiest time of year to visit Vietnam, coinciding with favorable beach weather on the central coast. Demand for flights soars, and prices for accommodations can increase by as much as 50% in resort areas such as Danang and Nha Trang . Book flights and hotels well in advance and expect crowds on the sand at all the popular resorts.

The rest of the country is warm and humid, and sunny days are punctuated by spectacular summer monsoon downpours and even the odd typhoon on the coast. This is a poor time of year for visiting the north, as trekking trails turn into quagmires, and Hanoi and Halong Bay are drenched by heavy showers. On the festival calendar, Trung Nguyen (Wandering Souls Day, also known as Vu Lan) in August sees huge spreads of food left out for the spirits.

December to March is the season to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)

Winter in Vietnam tends to be drier and cooler than the sticky summer, and the weather can be downright chilly in the north, particularly at higher elevations. However, this is the perfect time to explore Vietnam's characterful northern and southern capitals, with manageable temperatures and low humidity taking the sting out of exploring Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on foot.

If you want to see more of the country, this is also a great time to head out to the Mekong Delta and the island of Phu Quoc , with warm (not scorching) temperatures and clear skies. As April approaches, however, the mercury starts to climb to uncomfortable levels down south.

Another obstacle to easy travel is the Tet festival – officially, Tet Nguyen Dan – marking the Vietnamese lunar New Year, in late January or early February. The whole country is on the move and prices for transport and hotels shoot skywards. 

In December, the biennial Flower Festival brings fragrant blooms, pageants, wine and music to Dalat , while Buon Ma Thuot's annual coffee festival in March attracts lovers of a good brew. Christmas Day – known in Vietnam as Le Giang Sinh – is a big deal for the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City.

Visit from April to June and September to November to avoid the crowds

The low season in Vietnam coincides with the transition from the cool, dry winter to the hot, humid summer and vice versa. From April to June and from September to November, the weather is often unsettled but rarely extreme. You may get days of glorious sunshine, but there will also be days of rain, so pack for both dry and wet weather.

These transition periods are good times to avoid crowds at the sights, save money and explore the whole country, as the weather is not notably awful anywhere. The October to November window is particularly favorable for exploring the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay (and its calmer and less commercial neighbor, Bai Tu Long Bay ), with more dry days than wet days and mild temperatures.

There are some good festivals too. Held in Hue in April, May or June, the biennial Hue Festival fills the city's historic citadel with color, music and lights, while the Nha Trang Sea Festival brings a similar party mood to Nha Trang every second June. Vietnamese Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha with extravagant street processions in May for Phat Dan – best experienced in Ninh Binh or Ho Chi Minh City. Pyrotechnics enthusiasts of all kinds gather in Danang in June (or sometimes July) for the explosive Danang Fireworks Festival.

In the pre-winter season, aim to be in Hanoi on September 2, as Vietnam National Day brings energetic rallies and fireworks to Ba Dinh Square and boat races to Hoan Kiem Lake . Tasty festival foods appear everywhere for Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or October, while dragon boats race on the waterways of the Mekong Delta for the Khmer Ok Om Bok Festival in October or November.

Visiting Vietnam during the typhoon season

Technically, the typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific runs from May to November, but in Vietnam, the biggest risk of storms is from August to September. The country sees four to six typhoons in an average year, marked by heavy rain and strong winds. Occasional severe storms lead to flooding and disruption to transport, particularly by air and sea.

The areas most affected by typhoons are the southern coast and the far north coast (including Halong Bay). The weather tends to be most severe near the shore – inland, you may just get heavy rain and the odd power cut. This is a time to be cautious but not paranoid – monitor weather reports and prioritize land-based activities over boat trips, beaches, and diving.

Bac Can is well known for its cultural identity charm and abundance in natural resources. On your trip to Northern Vietnam , you can visit Ba Be National Park and Ba Be lake – the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam. “Ba Be” means three lakes and this area is formed by the three large lakes (Pe Lam, Pe Lu, Pe Leng). Visiting Ba Be, you cannot omit enjoying a boat ride on the lake’s surface, bathing at Ba Goa Island (Widow’s Island), or gazing in admiration the karst features of Puong cavern. Initially, I had some reservations because there were only a few reviews available online about this agency. However, I am pleased to report that everything turned out flawlessly from the initial booking through to our return to France.

Madame Van Le promptly responded to our initial inquiry and subsequently arranged a comprehensive 10-day itinerary for us in South Vietnam. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Mr. Nam, our driver, who was waiting for us at the airport in a well-maintained, air-conditioned Ford Everest. He then transported us to our hotel. The following day, we were introduced to Mr. Triều, our guide, who accompanied us throughout our excursion.

July is a hot month of the year in Vietnam with both temperature and humidity is high. It is also the raining season in the North and South of Vietnam and the beginning of typhoon season with storms occasionally hit the coast of the country and cause rain for a few days at affected place. Anyway, most of the time is dry with sunlight and since Vietnam is a long country so you can always find some places to see even there is a typhoon.

The North of Vietnam is in middle of summer. Precipitation is higher than previous month but it does not mean you can see rain everyday. Rains just come may be once or twice a week for a short time, normally one or two hours then stop.  Hanoi, Ninh Binh and surroundings are expected to be hot whilst Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island are more pleasant thanks to the ocean breeze.

The far north mountainous area such as Sa Pa and Ha Giang is cooler thanks to its high elevation but the wet might make trekking difficult. The same thing happens in the area of Da Lat and Central Highland.

Central Vietnam including Hue , Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang is still in the dry season with temperatures remain high at the average of 33ºC. All beaches offer excellent condition with plenty of sunshine and blue skies expected throughout the month.

The South of Vietnam is in the middle of the wet season with downpours happen almost every day or two for short time in the afternoon. Anyway, the rest of the day time is expected to be dry and bright. Average temperature this time stay between 31 - 32ºC

How to do and what to expect if travel to Vietnam in July

If you plan to travel to Vietnam in July then remember that the hot weather is the fact you should consider. Anyway, that is not a big thing to worry about if you know how to plan your itinerary properly. Some people might say that summer months including July are the best time to visit Vietnam since it is sunny and clear.

It is the best way to take an easy classic style for your vacation. Visiting to most of places is possible but avoid burdening yourself with to much activities. Beach relaxing, comfort resort and cruises should be good choices.

When you travel in the hot weather, just dress light, loose fitting and drink enough water. Sun hat or an umbrella will help to protect you from the sun and sunglasses and sun cream are necessary to avoid any bad effect of the tropical sunlight.

Although there may be short downpours in the south and north, many people see no rain at all.

This time is really good to enjoy beaches along the country at their best condition. Long biking or outdoor adventures (except in water and the sea) are not recommended but walking and easy style travel is more than appropriate.

Due to the wet, trekking in mountainous is sometime rather difficult and unadvisable. This time is the low season for foreign tourist so you most likely to have better prices for some services such as restaurant, bar and accommodation in most of cities.

July is a very similar story to June; a mixed bag in terms of weather. The centre of Vietnam remains hot and predominantly dry with the odd light shower expected. The south is now in the midst of its wet season with daily downpours to be expected whilst the north is well into summer mode with high temperatures and rain the norm. Visitor numbers remain lower than earlier in the year and the central beaches still promise a great deal of sunshine. Trekking is off the cards for most regions however, with more rain in the northern mountains and central highlands.

The good news continues on the beaches of Hoi An , Danang and Nha Trang with plenty of sunshine and blue skies expected throughout the month. Temperatures remain high and whilst still predominantly dry, the odd shower is not out of place helping to temper the hot weather (avg temp: 31 °C). Hue is experiencing similar conditions but to the west Dalat and the Central Highlands high rainfall makes extensive trekking and adventure activities unadvisable.

Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Ho Tram & Long Hai, Con Dao & Phu Quoc

The south is now firmly into its wet season. However this is unlikely to be severe and whilst the showers will be slightly heavier than in previous months you can still expect plenty of dry and bright daylight hours (avg temp: 29°C). If you're planning to dive around the island of Con Dao, favourable water conditions can still be enjoyed in July, although realistically it is the last month of the dive season.

The best time to visit Vietnam is from March to April when rainfall is low and temperatures are milder.

In a country more than 1,000 miles long, the weather in Vietnam varies considerably as you go from north to south, from a temperate to a tropical climate. While this variety makes Vietnam a year-round destination, spring (March to April) is typically the best time to visit the entire country, when days are generally pleasant, temperatures are moderate and rainfall is light. Tropical monsoons bring heavy rains and occasional flooding during other parts of the year, while extreme temperatures can make summer days uncomfortably hot and sticky.

The north of Vietnam experiences cold dry winters from December to February, where overnight temperatures can dip to 39°F. The summer months (May to August) are typically very hot and humid. The best time to visit northern Vietnam is during spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November), when days are generally warm and sunny.

The coast of central Vietnam is often battered with typhoons during its wet season. It’s difficult to predict when these heavy rains and hurricane-like winds can hit coastal cities like Hoi An, but generally, typhoon seasons runs from August to November. The rainy season usually subsides in February, when you can expect warmer temperatures and more sunshine. While travelers will experience pleasant weather in Central Vietnam any time between February and August, sunny 86°F days are the norm in July and August.

South Vietnam experiences warm, pleasant temperatures year-round, making travel good at any time. The dry season generally runs from December to May and a rainy season runs from June through November. While flooding can occur, rain usually comes in short bursts and rarely impacts travel. In fact, the monsoon season is often the best time for photography as dramatic thunderheads float across the Mekong Delta and rice fields turn a vibrant emerald green. Some, however, might find temperatures unbearable from March to May, when the mercury regularly reaches 104°F.

Best for: exploring Hoi An’s Old Town, swimming and other water-based activities.

While it might be winter, January is considered one of the best times to visit Vietnam as the country experiences warm, sunny and relatively dry weather. Temperatures and weather patterns can differ slightly depending on your location in the north, south or central part of Vietnam but, on average, you can expect highs of around 77°F and low humidity levels.

The atmosphere is also likely to be festive thanks to various Luna New Year (Tet) celebrations happening around the country, so make sure you get involved as much as you can. Popular destinations to visit during January include Hoi An and the southern islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao for some much-needed beach time.

Best for: bar hopping in Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta day trips and lounging at rooftop pools.

Weather patterns are generally at their best in February, meaning mostly dry and sunny days with temperatures at an average of 73°F. Central and south Vietnam tend to be warmer than the north, so if you’re after a beach holiday, head to the southern islands for ultimate relaxation or to Ho Chi Minh City if you want those rooftop pool vibes.

February is also likely to be busy with Luna New Year (Tet) festivities ongoing, but you can escape all the hustle and bustle on a day trip to the Mekong Delta, where water levels are high enough to see the floating markets in all of their glory.

Best for: exploring national parks, rainforest walks and dining on Vietnamese cuisine.

Temperatures in March are on the rise, especially in central and southern Vietnam, where highs can get to a sweat-inducing 84°F+. Northern Vietnam is still relatively cool with plenty of sunshine during the month, so you can get outside and start exploring some of this country’s beautiful national parks and rainforest areas. There’s also never a bad time to try Vietnamese cuisine but March is one of the best months for growing star fruit and rambutan, so make sure to taste these sweet snacks during your trip.

Best for: Hue Festival celebrations, learning about ancient traditions and temple visits.

April is still firmly entrenched in Vietnam’s ‘best time to visit’ season and enjoys warm but comfortable temperatures; however, a transitional period (weather-wise) is just around the corner, so expect an increase in rainfall and humidity levels, especially in the south.

The peak season crowds are also starting to thin out in April, so it’s a good time to visit popular temples such as Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi and Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue.

Best for: pottery village visits, exploring historical buildings and wandering through markets.

While May is technically the first month of the wet season, it still remains a popular time to visit Vietnam because of its generally favorable weather. However, you can expect different weather patterns depending on your location due to the varying climates. Rainfall is starting to increase in the northern regions, such as Hanoi and the Sapa Valley, while central Vietnam retains temperatures of around 86°F and enjoys blue skies and relatively dry days.

Best for: museum visits, cycling and trips to Con Dao National Park.

While it boasts the title of ‘hottest month in Vietnam’, June is still a relatively good month to visit the central regions of the country with sunny days that are perfect for cycling and relaxing on the beaches in Danang and Nha Trang. The same can’t be said for the south, where downpours are now a daily occurrence. The slight positive, if you’re visiting Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho in June, is that while these daily showers are heavy, they’re often short-lived and occur in the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to wander outside in the mornings.

While it’s raining, you might want to spend your time in some of the fascinating museums in Ho Chi Minh City, such as the War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace or do some serious shopping while you wait for the rain to ease up. June also marks the start of Green Turtle nesting season on the beaches of Con Dao Island. If you’re in the vicinity, visiting Con Dao National Park to hear about their conservation program will add another layer of awesomeness to your trip.

Best for: beach days, diving and checking out UNESCO World-Heritage-listed sites.

July is considered to be in the middle of the low season in Vietnam, so popular destinations like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are less crowded and accommodation is generally cheaper. However, the weather varies a lot from region to region, so you must plan accordingly to avoid disappointment or disruption to your travel plans.

Central Vietnam’s weather patterns remain relatively the same as in previous months, so spending time in Hue and Hoi An are good options if you’re into plenty of sunshine and rain-free days. The northern regions, such as Halong Bay and Sapa, experience hot, stormy weather with temperatures reaching 86°F+ most days, while the south is still firmly in its wet season, so a mix of rainy days and sunny weather is the norm.

Best for: watching baby Green Turtles hatch, learning how to cook Vietnamese food and beach lounging.

If you’re set on trekking through the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, then August isn’t the month to travel in, but if you’re more interested in lounging out on beaches in Hoi An and Danang, then start blocking out the dates in your calendar – you’re good to go.

Yes, temperatures in central Vietnam can reach beyond 86°F+ but short bursts of rain are common (especially towards the end of the month), and they’ll give you a slight reprieve from the heat. Watching baby Green Turtles hatch should also be on the agenda if you’re visiting Con Dao Island as they start their slow but adorable journey to the sea from mid-August onwards.

Best for: Mid-Autum Festival celebrations, trips to Hoan Kiem Lake and exploring the Mu Cang Chai valley.

September sees both the northern and southern regions emerge from their hot and humid seasons while central Vietnam enters its monsoonal era – think torrential downpours and flooding in places such as Hoi An and the caves of Phong Nha. While typhoon season technically started in June (and runs until November), they’re more likely to occur in September, so be aware of changing weather conditions and keep up to date with local advice.

Destinations like Hanoi and Phu Quoc experience 14 and 17 days of rain, respectively (out of the month), so they still promise plenty of days where the sun is shining and temperatures aren’t too warm. There’s also celebration in the air thanks to the Mid-Autumn Festival and Vietnam Independence Day, both occurring in September. Why not make the most of these cultural events and immerse yourself as much as you can?

Best for: Keo Pagoda Festival celebrations, Halloween festivities and day trips to Moc Chau.

While October’s weather isn’t optimal country-wide, it’s still possible to have a great holiday in Vietnam during this time - in fact, it’s probable. Temperatures are starting to come down again after summer heat in the northern regions, while typhoons are less likely to occur in the south. However, central Vietnam is still in the thick of its wet period so it’s best to avoid those areas if you want to spend your holiday outside enjoying the country’s beautiful landscapes.

Best for: Halong Bay cruises, fishing and mountain hiking.

Move aside central Vietnam; November is the northern regions’ time to shine (literally). The rainy days of the summer season are finally gone (mostly) and temperatures are no longer stifling, so it’s the perfect time to explore the country’s breathtaking mountains.

Beachside destinations such as Phan Tiet and Mui Ne in Vietnam’s south are also ready to wave goodbye to typhoon season and hello to excited travelers looking to make the most of the region’s sunny, clear weather. Indulge in 81°F days and spend your time laying out on pristine beaches or swimming in crystal-clear waters.

Best for: island life, performing Tai Chi and Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations

Fantastic weather is well and truly on the cards for southern Vietnam in December with near-perfect conditions and comfortable temperatures. Humidity levels are also low with little to no rainfall expected throughout the month. Enjoy your time outside by walking in parks, laying out on a beach or participating in some Tai Chi.

Central Vietnam should still be avoided if you’re not keen on stormy weather; however, expected rainfall does decrease dramatically so it’s entirely possible to get lucky with a few clear days if you’re traveling to this region in September. Preparations for Christmas and the New Year also ramp up as the month goes on with cities nationwide getting into the festive spirit by decorating storefronts and hosting markets.

The seaside city of Mong Cai celebrates the one-week festival ‘Tra Co Festival’ from the 30th day of the fifth lunar month to the 6th day of the sixth lunar month. The Tra Co Festival is organized at Tra Co Communal House, which is decorated with antiques. Vietnamese honor the spiritual guardian of the community, whose shrine was built during the Le Dynasty. After the ritual processions, there are contests like cooking contests, calligraphy writing, tug of war, stilts, and other fun games. ‘Mr.Elephant’ is a unique feature of the Tra Co Festival where the person who owns the fattest pig wins. 

2. Hoi An Lantern Festival

1. Ninh Binh

Located in North Vietnam, Ninh Binh Province is famous for its Karst Landscape in Tam Coc. July is one of the best seasons to visit Ninh Binh because it is the harvest season. A boat can be hired to see the limestone cliffs in Tam Coc. A two-hour excursion takes you through three natural caves - Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba.

2. Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province

In the summer season of July, biodiversity is moderate in Cuc Phuong National Park, which is located in Ninh Binh Province. You can trek through the grass jungle and observe ancient trees and a wide variety of flora and fauna. Vietnam’s oldest national park includes the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, where Monkeys, Langurs, and Gibbons were rescued and kept national park.

Hanoi is the only capital of a country which isn't its largest city. The capital of Vietnam - Hanoi, is a place for every traveler. July is the warmest month (average temperature - 33˚C) with humidity at its peak, so we prefer to visit closed areas. From several historical museums to underrated monuments to extravagant nightlife, Hanoi offers everything together. 4. Halong Bay

Halong Bay, located in North Vietnam, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there’s much to explore and spend a hot and sunny July here. Apart from rejuvenating and getting tanned on beaches and islands, travelers can go for a cruise, swimming, and cooking classes. It is the perfect month for kayaking and snorkeling.

5. Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay

Cat Ba Island is one of the most amazing and highly visited Islands connected to Halong Bay. July is a peak month to visit here if you love tropical summers; the average temperature is around 33˚C. There are three famous sand beaches- Cat Ba 1, 2 and 3, enjoy the time under the sun or swim in the water.

6. Quan Lan - Minh Chau

Two unspoilt beaches near HaLong Bay are good to go for private space in July. Quan Lan Beach and Minh Chau Beach are adorned with white sands. One can hire an electric car to travel around Quan Lan Beach. Minh Chau Beach is the freshest of all beaches in Vietnam and has green water. There is seafood to enjoy and various beach activities to be part of. 

Bac Can is a mountainous region in North Vietnam and has a dry-cold season in July. It is famous for its natural resources and major attractions namely Ba Be National Park and Dau Dang Waterfall. Ba Be consists of three large lakes - Pe Lam, Pe Lu, Pe Leng. Bac Can offer to visit Ba Goa Island or Widow’s Island and various caves and caverns such as Phuong Cave, Hua Ma Cave, Lo Mo Cave. Dong vermicelli, Bee sweet soup, Bo Nam wine are special eateries of Bac Can.

Hue is an ancient city in Central Vietnam that is also recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Hue has preserved its old fashion, cuisine, language, art, and architecture. It is located on the banks of the picturesque Huong River, commonly known as the Perfume River. Starting from Imperial City, Hue has a plethora of historical sites to visit. Ngo Mon Gate is the entrance to Imperial City, It has museums, lawns, temples, art galleries, and markets.

9. Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is a part of a district ‘Minh Hao’ in Central Vietnam. Phong Nha is the home of Son Doong Cave - the largest cave in the world covered by Karst Mountain and has the longest underground river. There are a tremendous number of species of flora and fauna to explore by rowboats. To experience unforgettable scenery one must visit Phong Nha Cave or The Wet Cave and Tien Son Cave, or The Dry Cave. The national park also offers a beautiful Horizontal Spring, ‘Nuoc Ngang,’ and a field to catch a glimpse of bulls in Ran Bo.

10. Da Nang

Da Nang is a first-class city located in Central Vietnam, which is visited by many mainly because of its beaches but there’s more to see. If you want to experience the vibes of SaPa or DaLat, visit Ba Na Hill Station, which provides a cable car ride and a fantasy park. Marble Mountains are a collection of mountains of Metal, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Water. Monkey Mountain is the place of the tallest statue of the Goddess of Mercy in Linh Ung Pagoda.

Another major tourist city in central Vietnam is Hoi An, which was formerly known as FaiFoo. The ancient Town of Hoi An is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has an attraction spot near the riverside of Thu Ban River. Japanese Covered Bridge is a must-go site in the mornings or evenings.

Other major attractions include the Museum of Ceramics, Fujian Assembly Hall, Terracotta Park, Van Duc Pagoda, Hoi An Fine Art Gallery.

12. Nha Trang

Nha Trang is located in Central Vietnam and is great to visit in July to enjoy various water sports at Monkey Island Hon Tre Island and have relaxing hours at Thap Ba Hot Spring. You can spend a couple of hours at Hon Ba Mountain and worship in the aesthetically pleasing Long Son Pagoda (White Buddha Pagoda) and Panogark Tower. 

13. Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island lies in Southwest Vietnam, apart from the mainland. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is the largest island of Vietnam, with its own international airport. There are four major beaches - Bai Sao (a silky white sand beach with starfishes spotted in crystal water), Hon Xuong Beach (a white sandy beach, perfect for snorkeling), Starfish Beach (white sand beach with floating eateries, red sea starfish being a picturesque) and Bai Truong also known as Long Beach. Long Beach is the main stop-spot for visitors because of the yellow sand, sailing, swimming, snorkeling, and beach massage.

14. Con Dao Islands 

Con Dao Islands, separated from the mainland, lies in Southeastern Vietnam. These are a set of various islands where green turtles nestle in July. You can spot turtles coming out around two at night. These islands are great for wildlife lovers and families. You can spot a variety of exotic fishes, eels, and stingrays here. Con Dao National Park protects many endangered species like green turtles, hawksbill turtles, dolphins, and dugongs. Con Dao Prisons, better known as ‘Tiger Caves’ and Con Dao Museum, are the sites to learn the history.

Tet Nguyen Dan (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) 

Marking the start of a new lunar year, Tet Nguyen Dan is the most important festival in Vietnam. This festival kicks off on the 6th day of the first lunar month and lasts until the end of the third lunar month at Perfume Pagoda in the suburbs of Hanoi. Being one of Vietnam's most significant Buddhist festivals, every year the Chua Huong festival draws thousands of pilgrims who come to pray for health, happiness and prosperity. On the 6th day of the first lunar month, the Giong Festival takes place yearly at the Giong Temple in Hnaoi’s Soc Son district. The festival commemorates Giong, a legendary hero who is believed to have protected Vietnam from foreign invaders. Processions, battle re-enactments, and worship offerings are all part of the festivities. 

Lim Festival

The Lim Festival is held every 13th day of the first lunar month at Lim Village, Bac Ninh Province. Renowned for Quan Ho singing, a type of Vietnamese folk music, this festival celebrates love and folk culture, with participants singing traditional Quan Ho songs in colorful costumes. 

Yen Tu Festival

The Yen Tu Festival, which begins on the 10th day of the first lunar month on Yen Tu Mountain in Quang Ninh Province, is a major Buddhist pilgrimage during which devotees climb the mountain to visit pagodas and temples. The festival honors Buddha and the founders of Vietnamese Zen.

Holidays: During Tet, Vietnamese people have a week-long holiday, which means that most shops and services, especially in the northern part of the country, are unavailable. Because of this, service charges tend to increase, leading to a significant addition to the travel budget.

Transport booking: When traveling between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, it's recommended to book flights and train tickets in advance. Demand for flights and trains from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi before Tet, and from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City after Tet, is especially high. Therefore, it's best to make your bookings as early as possible to secure your travel plans.

Service quality : The quality of services before and after Tet might be rather less reliable. Before Tet, the atmosphere is hustling and bustling with preparations for the festival, while during Tet, the streets are quieter as Vietnamese gather with their families. After Tet, it’s time for spring excursions and festivals. Therefore, it would be ideal to plan your trip before or after Tet to fully appreciate the festive atmosphere.

Accommodation: Opting for a homestay can be a great way to experience Tet alongside the locals and discover traditions authentically.

Traditional markets: In North Vietnam, Tet markets generally open until New Year’s Eve (the 30th of the last lunar month of the old year, also known as 30 Tet). However, markets in mountainous regions close at 30 Tet and remain closed until the end of the first lunar month. As for the southern region, the floating markets cease their Tet activities on the 28th of the last lunar month and resume after the 5th of the first lunar month. It is therefore important to plan your visits around these dates.

Pilgrimage sites and festivals: If you don't like crowds, avoid popular pilgrimage and festival sites, especially on weekends. Be mindful that attractions such as Perfume Pagoda and Ninh Binh tend to be extremely crowded.

Mountainous regions: For those planning to head to the mountainous regions during this time, don't forget to pack warm clothing as the temperatures can drop significantly. 

Travel to Vietnam in March and April

In March and April , Vietnam benefits from pleasant weather in all three main regions . 

Spring has arrived in the north, characterized by a cool, pleasant climate. The drizzles of February are over, giving way to fine, bright weather. In the center, the weather remains ideal for outdoor activities. The same is true for the south, where March and April continue to be the dry season, marked by comparatively hot and dry weather.

The months of March and April are unquestionably the best times to visit Vietnam , as this period allows tourists to visit Vietnam’s main attractions from north to south without being hampered by bad weather. The period from March to April is when various traditional festivals take place in different parts of the country. While they are often local in scope, these festivals offer an authentic immersion in Vietnamese culture.

Thay Pagoda Festival

This festival, on the 7th day of the 3rd lunar month at the Thay Pagoda on the outskirts of Hanoi, honors Tu Dao Hanh, a Buddhist famous for his powers of healing and miracles. Celebrations include water puppet shows, processions, and prayers.

Hung King Temple Festival

Held annually on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month in Phu Tho Province, this national festival is to commemorate the Hung Kings, the legendary founders of Vietnam.  Ceremonies include solemn processions, traditional dances, and offerings to ancestors. 

Ba Trieu Temple Festival

The Central experiences an increase in temperature but has not yet reached the summer heat peaks. Rain is still infrequent, meaning relatively pleasant conditions for visits.

As for the southern part of the country, the rainy season begins , characterized by hot temperatures and frequent showers in the late afternoon. Though the rain is generally short, it is a good idea to keep an umbrella handy in case of sudden showers. 

Climate and where to visit in Vietnam in May-June

Despite the heat in all parts of Vietnam, it is still possible to make the most of sightseeing in May and June . Historical and cultural sites offer rewarding exploration for travelers. While the golden rice terraces in Mu Cang Chai and Sapa offer picturesque scenes, harvesting activities in the Red River Delta, Mai Chau, and Pu Luong enliven the landscapes.
