Best Times to Visit for Smaller Crowds

Best times to visit for good weather, best times to visit for lower prices, best times to visit for hiking in sa pa, best times to visit for cruising ha long bay, worst times to visit.

Cinnamon and star anise perfume my memories of Vietnam, a country that lodged itself into my palate in fragrant, frenzied bursts. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks.

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary.

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

Here's a regional breakdown of the primary tourist seasons in Vietnam:

  • High Seasons: North: September to November, March and April; Central: April to August; South: October to April
  • Shoulder Seasons: North: December to February, May to August; Central: September to March; South: September to December
  • Low Season: North: May to October; Central: September to May; South: May to September

Before you start planning your trip, read on to learn about the best times to visit Vietnam for hiking the majestic, mountainous rice terraces of Sa Pa, cruising the limestone marvels of Ha Long Bay, and avoiding the rainy monsoon season.

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

The high season in Vietnam varies according to the region, so you’ll always be able to find a place that feels more secluded from the bustle of crowded beaches or cruise ships. Wet season attracts fewer crowds, says Matthews, which falls from May to October in the north, September to May in the central part of the country, and May to September in the south.

Visiting during this time has plenty of perks, as you’ll likely be able to save on accommodations and travel costs. Popular restaurants and tours will be less overrun with tourists, offering a rare opportunity to better immerse yourself in the local culture as you tuck into bun cha on a sidewalk stool. However, bursts of rain and cloudy weather can dampen any plans to hike in Sa Pa or cruise along Ha Long Bay — two quintessential experiences you won’t want to miss.

There are also an abundance of places that remain less crowded throughout the year, says Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay — the resort itself is one of them, nestled in a private cove of Nha Trang that became my personal definition of paradise. Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

Meet the Expert

  • Melissa Matthews is the regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah.
  • Benjamin Kreuz is the general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz.

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities.

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April.

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train.

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators).

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

Nick Dolding/Getty Images

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season.

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns.

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts.

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.

Traveling to Vietnam in July ?

You’re in the right place because I live in Vietnam, and I’m going to share everything I know about visiting Vietnam in July with you!

Vietnam is a year round destination. But July is better in some places than others.

This guide will navigate you through 10 cities in Vietnam you may want to travel to in July. We will cover the places with the best weather , events , and how to travel during the rainy season.

Ready to learn about traveling to Vietnam in July? Let’s get to it!

Typical Vietnam Weather in July

visit vietnam july

If you’re on this page you’re likely wondering what is the Vietnam weather in July like?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Vietnam in July is smack in the middle of the rainy season.

Don’t cancel your plans, though!

Just because it is the rainy season, doesn’t mean that it is raining all of the time! There are plenty of clear, sunny spells between downpours.

You know the scene from Forrest Gump where he is in Vietnam and says, “One day it started raining, and it didn’t quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin’ rain… and big ol’ fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways.” You know this one:

It’s not quite that dramatic, however, one thing you can definitely expect when you come to Vietnam in July is rain.

Some areas are more rainy than others, and we will get into that more in depth.

North Vietnam Weather in July

Hanoi and its surroundings will be wet and warm this month. July falls right in the middle of summer monsoon season. Days are hot, humid and rainy. July and August are the wettest months, with heavy but brief downpours, usually in the afternoon. This doesn’t mean constant rain, but you should be ready for daily downpours that can be heavy.

Temperatures range from 26°C to 34°C (79°F to 93°F), mostly hovering around 30°C (86°F), sometimes climbing higher, so it is always warm. The humidity is also quite high, making the air feel warmer than it actually is. When it rains, you may get a brief respite from the heat, but not hugely.

My recommendation for you is if you’re headed to Northern Vietnam during July, just embrace the unpredictability of the weather. Pack light, breathable clothing, a sturdy umbrella, and waterproof gear for your adventures (you can also get all of these in Hanoi).

Central Vietnam Weather in July

This part of Vietnam is where you will want to go if you want the best chances for sunny, dry days.

Central Vietnam, like Da Nang and Hoi An, are at an interesting crossroads of weather patterns this month. July typically means the beginning of the transition to wetter months, but it is still mostly dry.

In cities like Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, July still has plenty of sunshine, with the occasional rain showers as the month goes on.

The temperature is toasty, often ranging from the mid to high 30s°C (85-95°F), with humidity on the higher side.  The sea breeze along the coast, especially on the beaches of Da Nang , can offer a nice little reprieve from the heat.

Rain, when it arrives, usually does so in brief, heavy bursts, often in the late afternoon or evening. They are quite refreshing and won’t really ruin your day’s plans. In fact, afternoon rains come at a perfect time to take a break from laying in the sun on the beach.

Southern Vietnam Weather in July

If you’re going to Southern Vietnam in July it means you will be embracing the heart of the rainy season – Don’t let that dampen your spirits!

This region experiences a more pronounced wet season with daily rain expected. The showers are usually heavy but short, often providing a break from the heat.

In cities like Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, expect temperatures to hover around 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 89°F). The heat is a constant, accompanied by high humidity levels that can make it feel even warmer.

However, the frequent rain showers may cool you down slightly. These showers are typically short-lived, occurring mainly in the afternoon or evening, leaving most of the morning and early afternoon clear and sunny.

What is cool about this region of Vietnam during the rainy season is that the rain transforms the landscape. Everything is green and bright. While southern cities (mostly) deal with the rain efficiently, be prepared for flooding in streets and alleyways.

If you’re planning a vacation that finds you in Southern Vietnam in July – go into it with an open mind. Embrace life here by enjoying outdoor activities and sightseeing in the mornings and early afternoons, then heading to cafés, museums, or indoor attractions when the rain starts.

Rainfall in Vietnam in July

As you learned in the section above, July is right in the middle of the rainy season in both the north and the south. When it comes to rainfall, here is what you can expect this month:

Northern Vietnam: Around 14 to 16 rainy days in the month.

Central Vietnam: Relatively dry, with 10-12 days of rain often in the form of short, heavy downpours that clear quickly

Southern Vietnam : Approximately 22 to 23  days of the month will have rain. This is characterized by heavy afternoon showers.

Air Quality in Vietnam in July (AQI)

Checking the air quality of your vacation is probably not something you are used to. But when it comes to traveling in Vietnam, this is definitely something to pay attention to.

For some context, Vietnam is dealing with significant air pollution challenges. In 2021, it ranked 36th out of 118 countries for having the dirtiest air. The main contributors to this problem are vehicles, factories, construction, agriculture, artisanal production, and inadequate waste management. You can read more about the Air Quality in Vietnam through the World Health Organization .

When talking about the air quality, you will hear people refer to the AQI. That stands for Air Quality Index. There are color ranking and number rankings as well:

visit vietnam july

Apps and Websites will tell you the air quality for the day- I recommend IQAir .

Now, a week-long vacation in Vietnam will likely not give you any long term health effects. However, it might contribute to the enjoyment of your trip. When the air is particularly bad, you can feel it, see it, and smell it. If you have underlying health issues like asthma it might be smart to make sure you have medicine, or make sure you wear a mask.

That being said, the month of July is a “better air month” in Vietnam. Here is what you can expect from different areas:

Northern Vietnam: The air quality tends to improve a bit during this time because the frequent rains help settle the dust and pollutants. It’s generally a relief after the higher pollution levels experienced in the cooler months. You’ll find the air feels fresher, especially after those afternoon showers.

Central Vietnam: Places like Da Nang and Hoi An are known for their pretty decent air quality year-round, and July is no exception. Thanks to the coastal breezes and less industrial activity, you can expect clearer skies and cleaner air, making those beach days even more enjoyable.

Southern Vietnam : In this part of the country, July’s air quality can be a mixed bag. The increased humidity and rain do wash away pollutants, but on drier days, urban emissions can make the air feel a bit heavier. It’s generally good, but on days with less rain, you might notice the difference, especially in busier city areas.

Pros and Cons of Traveling to Vietnam in July

Holidays in july.

July doesn’t have any major national holidays. But it is possible you will catch some sort of village or neighborhood festival or celebration at a temple on your travels.

The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival will still be happening the first weekend of July. You can read more about it in my article: Vietnam in June .

visit vietnam july

IS PHU QUOC WORTH VISITING?

Definitely. If you’re seeking a blend of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty, Phu Quoc is a perfect choice. The island is not just about beaches; it also has national parks, pepper farms, and luxury resorts. It is more popular with Vietnamese tourists than foreign tourists. It still kind of has that undiscovered feel (it won’t last long though).

PHU QUOC WEATHER JULY

Heading to Phu Quoc in July? You’ll be landing right in the middle of the rainy season, so expect a mix of sunshine and showers throughout your stay.

Curious about the average temperature in Phu Quoc in July ?

The island stays warm, with temperatures generally hovering around 28°C to 31°C (82°F to 88°F). Nights are pretty warm too, not dropping much below 25°C (77°F). The humidity’s also up there, which can make the heat feel more intense, but those rain showers can cool things down a bit. HOW MANY DAYS IN PHU QUOC IS ENOUGH?

To fully enjoy what Phu Quoc has to offer, a stay of about three to five days is ideal. This length allows for ample time to relax on the beaches, and explore the island without feeling rushed.

Sapa is a bit different than the tropical climate found elsewhere in the country. Sapa in July might be where you want to go to get out of the heat.

visit vietnam july

IS SAPA WORTH VISITING?

Absolutely. Sapa’s landscapes and the opportunity to interact with its diverse ethnic communities are worth it alone. Trekking through the hills to visit local villages and markets is one of the most popular things to do in Sapa. Yes, it is touristy, but for a good reason!

SAPA WEATHER JULY

Curious about the average temperature in Sapa in July ?

Temperatures in Sapa during July are cooler than much of Vietnam, ranging from about 15°C (59°F) at night to 25°C (77°F) during the day. The climate is refreshingly mild, which is perfect for hiking and exploring the outdoors.

July in Sapa sees moderate humidity levels compared to the rest of Vietnam, generally around 85%. The moisture in the air can make the cool temperatures feel a bit chillier, especially in the evenings and early mornings.

WHAT TO DO IN SAPA? TREKKING AND CULTURAL EXPLORATIONS

Sapa’s main draw in July continues to be its outdoor activities. Trekking through the rice terraces to see them at their peak, or visiting the local markets are prime activities that benefit from the cooler weather.

Da Lat in July

While it is the rainy season, the showers in Da Lat usually come in the late afternoon and are quite manageable, often leaving the mornings clear and fresh—perfect for exploring the city.

DALAT ITINERARY: A PERFECT JULY IN DA LAT

A well-planned itinerary is key to enjoying all that Da Lat has to offer in July. Start your visit with a morning at the Dalat Flower Gardens, where blooms are vibrant despite the season. Follow this with a trip to the Bao Dai Summer Palace to soak in some history and architecture. In the afternoon, head to the Valley of Love for a leisurely stroll or paddle boating amidst picturesque scenery.

My favorite thing to do is go on a canyoning trip through Da Lat’s waterfalls and rivers.

The cooler days of July are ideal for hiking to Lang Biang Peak, where the views of the surrounding highlands are excellent. For a more relaxed day, consider a visit to the Truc Lam Zen Monastery, accessible via a scenic cable car ride over the pine forests, providing a peaceful escape and panoramic views of Tuyen Lam Lake.

Mui Ne in July

Mui N is famous for its sand dunes and beautiful beaches. July in Mui Ne is particularly appealing if you want adventure and beach relaxation time.

WHAT TO DO IN MUI NE IN JULY

Your July visit should definitely include exploring Mui Ne’s famous Red and White Sand Dunes. An early morning or late afternoon visit offers not only the best light for photographs but also cooler temperatures to fully enjoy sandboarding or an ATV ride.

Another must-do is a visit to the Fairy Stream, where you can walk through a watery landscape of red sand cliffs.

The best times in the year to visit Vietnam

Vietnam serves up a generous dose of Southeast Asian magic at any time of year, but some seasons are easier for travelers than others.

A lot depends on what you are looking for from your trip – if it's time on the beach on the central coast, you probably want to stick to the drier months from February to June, before the peak summer crowds arrive; if you're here to go trekking in the highlands, October to March is the optimum season.

It's important to be aware that the weather can vary widely as you travel around Vietnam. The country spans 1650km (1025 miles) from north to south, taking in tall mountains in the north and flat, tropical wetlands in the Mekong Delta . In the north, it can be positively chilly in winter; from December to February, the highlands around Sapa can see snow while the Delta basks at 25°C (77°F).

To help you plan a perfect trip, here's our guide on the best times to visit Vietnam.

A woman sits on a swing connected to a palm tree on a beautiful beach

July and August are the top months for beach lovers

The hot, sticky high season from July to August is the busiest time of year to visit Vietnam, coinciding with favorable beach weather on the central coast. Demand for flights soars, and prices for accommodations can increase by as much as 50% in resort areas such as Danang and Nha Trang . Book flights and hotels well in advance and expect crowds on the sand at all the popular resorts.

The rest of the country is warm and humid, and sunny days are punctuated by spectacular summer monsoon downpours and even the odd typhoon on the coast. This is a poor time of year for visiting the north, as trekking trails turn into quagmires, and Hanoi and Halong Bay are drenched by heavy showers. On the festival calendar, Trung Nguyen (Wandering Souls Day, also known as Vu Lan) in August sees huge spreads of food left out for the spirits.

Dancing performers move through the streets of Ho Chi Minh City during the lunar new year

December to March is the season to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)

Winter in Vietnam tends to be drier and cooler than the sticky summer, and the weather can be downright chilly in the north, particularly at higher elevations. However, this is the perfect time to explore Vietnam's characterful northern and southern capitals, with manageable temperatures and low humidity taking the sting out of exploring Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on foot.

If you want to see more of the country, this is also a great time to head out to the Mekong Delta and the island of Phu Quoc , with warm (not scorching) temperatures and clear skies. As April approaches, however, the mercury starts to climb to uncomfortable levels down south.

Another obstacle to easy travel is the Tet festival – officially, Tet Nguyen Dan – marking the Vietnamese lunar New Year, in late January or early February. The whole country is on the move and prices for transport and hotels shoot skywards.

In December, the biennial Flower Festival brings fragrant blooms, pageants, wine and music to Dalat , while Buon Ma Thuot's annual coffee festival in March attracts lovers of a good brew. Christmas Day – known in Vietnam as Le Giang Sinh – is a big deal for the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City.

Visit from April to June and September to November to avoid the crowds

The low season in Vietnam coincides with the transition from the cool, dry winter to the hot, humid summer and vice versa. From April to June and from September to November, the weather is often unsettled but rarely extreme. You may get days of glorious sunshine, but there will also be days of rain, so pack for both dry and wet weather.

These transition periods are good times to avoid crowds at the sights, save money and explore the whole country, as the weather is not notably awful anywhere. The October to November window is particularly favorable for exploring the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay (and its calmer and less commercial neighbor, Bai Tu Long Bay ), with more dry days than wet days and mild temperatures.

There are some good festivals too. Held in Hue in April, May or June, the biennial Hue Festival fills the city's historic citadel with color, music and lights, while the Nha Trang Sea Festival brings a similar party mood to Nha Trang every second June. Vietnamese Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha with extravagant street processions in May for Phat Dan – best experienced in Ninh Binh or Ho Chi Minh City. Pyrotechnics enthusiasts of all kinds gather in Danang in June (or sometimes July) for the explosive Danang Fireworks Festival.

In the pre-winter season, aim to be in Hanoi on September 2, as Vietnam National Day brings energetic rallies and fireworks to Ba Dinh Square and boat races to Hoan Kiem Lake . Tasty festival foods appear everywhere for Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or October, while dragon boats race on the waterways of the Mekong Delta for the Khmer Ok Om Bok Festival in October or November.

Visiting Vietnam during the typhoon season

Technically, the typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific runs from May to November, but in Vietnam, the biggest risk of storms is from August to September. The country sees four to six typhoons in an average year, marked by heavy rain and strong winds. Occasional severe storms lead to flooding and disruption to transport, particularly by air and sea.

The areas most affected by typhoons are the southern coast and the far north coast (including Halong Bay). The weather tends to be most severe near the shore – inland, you may just get heavy rain and the odd power cut. This is a time to be cautious but not paranoid – monitor weather reports and prioritize land-based activities over boat trips, beaches, and diving.

The international visitors are relatively fewer than the other months, while you can counter many Vietnamese families at famous destinations. Read on as we will show you some places to visit in terms of weather, travel cost and tourist flow.

In Vietnam, July is mixed in terms of weather and shares quite the same weather pattern with June.

Northern Vietnam includes Hanoi, Halong Bay, Mai Chau, Ha Giang, Sapa and other provinces.

North Vietnam is in the rainy season in July. Expect plenty of hot spells and humid weather because the region is in the middle of summer time. The average daily temperature remains at its peak this month at around 84°F (29°C), typically in Hanoi.

It is a bit cooler in mountainous areas like Sapa, Ha Giang, etc. There are possibly heavy rains soaking the mountains, which makes hiking off the mountain somehow affected. But if you are a nature seeker, you can still choose to enjoy the majestic landscape of rice-terraced rice fields. Minor storms can happen sometimes in north Vietnam this time of year and might affect Halong Bay cruises. You are advised to bring rain gear and have plan B for the day with most outdoor time.

This region remains hot and predominantly dry with some light showers expected. The plenty of sunshine and blue skies can be seen throughout the coastal region. The average temperature remains higher than the north, at around 88°F (31°C). Sightseeings should be planned earlier in the morning or late afternoon. From Quang Binh to Hoi An experience the similar conditions, however to Dalat and West Central Highlands, the atmosphere is much more pleasant.

Rains are usually limited to intermittent showers. In Danang, Hoi An, afternoon light showers may reduce the heat temporarily. Travel southwards, the summer monsoons drop plenty of rain on Dalat & West Central Highlands.

After such day-long rains, you'll probably experience some floods in Ho Chi Minh City, while the sea can be a bit rough, and transportation delays are likely. It’s wise to have a backup plan in the event for the day with most outdoor activities.

If you're planning to visit any Southern beaches like Phu Quoc, be prepared as this is rainy season there. However, the weather is hot during the day, with an average of about 35°C, and very cool at night.

The international visits remain less than earlier in the year. However, July falls in the middle of domestic high season tourism. Vietnamese students are on their summer vacation, when local families enjoy their holidays, especially on the weekends. If you are planning a beach vacation, keep in mind that beach resorts like Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, plus top destinations such as Halong Bay, Danang will get crowded. As a result, it is hard to expect any discount at the hotel or restaurant which aims at domestic tourists. However, for international hotels, you can find good deals. You should reserve your hotel rooms one or two months in advance due to the high demand.

The exception is in the big cities, where costs can be among the lowest of the year (for example, July is the cheapest month of the year in Ho Chi Minh City).

Spend leisure time to have a cup of coffee in the clouds and enjoy the mist winding around you.

Vietnam weather in July

In Northern and Southern Vietnam, June rainfall will continue into July. Bring your rain gear and bug repellant, as the environment allows mosquitoes to breed and carry dangerous diseases, even in urban areas. Expect plenty of hot weather when it’s not raining, though, and take advantage ò it. Coastal Central Vietnam will continue to enjoy pleasant days filled with sunshine. Da Lat and the Central Highlands can still be visited, but hiking at this point is inadvisable because of rain.

Crowds & Costs

July is the very peak of the tourist season in Vietnam. Be prepared for crowds and hiked costs everywhere you go. Don’t be afraid to haggle if visiting local markets (unless there are signs telling you not to do it) – unscrupulous business people will jack up the prices at the first sight of a tourist.

Where to go in Vietnam in July

Hoi An is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam . This peaceful former harbor town has stood steadfast against the uncaring flow of time. Moss-wreathed tiled roofs, roads submerged in the red of lanterns, ornate decorations, all seem to take us into a world of hundreds of years ago and enthrall us. The picturesque neighborhoods offer much to the traveler. You can see Cau Pagoda/Japanese (Covered) Bridge, built by merchants for easier travel and topped with a temple to placate an earthquake-causing monster The Fukien Assembly Hall, a charming example of Hoi An’s multi-cultural environment, was built for Fukien (Chinese) immigrants and their descendants to gather, and worship a sea goddess. Finally, you can take a cruise down the Thu Bon river, or just its inner-city tributary Hoai river, and see the floating lanterns and rich life on either side.

Founder & Photography Guide

Specialties: Culture, landscape, portrait, hiking, active and adventurous tour

Besides my unlimited passion for traveling, a professional tour guide for over a decade, I have been taking photographs since sitting at Hanoi of the University of Culture in the early 2000s. Photography started as a hobby but it was seriously taken due to my work relations and my significant passion for the beauty of our world, especially in Southeast Asian parts such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Within a few years of taking photographs, my works began to be recognized by many reliable international publications such as AFAR Travel , The Times , and The Daily Telegraph newspaper . In addition, I continuously add to my growing profile by winning numerous major awards: 3rd Position of The Independent Photographer 2018, 1st Position of Amateur Photographer of the year 2018, Grand Prize Winner of the AFAR Travel Photography 2019, and a Gold Award of San Francisco Bay International Photography 2020.

I photograph a wide variety of subjects, from travel to landscapes to street scenes. I enjoy documenting the East’s rich cultural heritage and its land soaked in glorious sunrise or sunset light in remote and secluded spots. And, I am very happy to share my knowledge and experience with you. You can visit Luminousvietnamtour to explore tour!

We have just returned from an exceptional 10-day, 9-night journey through Northern Vietnam and Cambodia, meticulously arranged by Autour Asia Travel for our group of six. The experience was outstanding in every regard!

From the moment we shared our preferences—such as the duration of our trip, budget, accommodation ratings, and desired activities—they took care of every detail with remarkable efficiency. The personalized itinerary they crafted was flawless, reflecting their superb attention to detail and commitment to ensuring our satisfaction.

A special mention goes to Van Le (Eliese), whose exceptional service and dedication significantly enhanced our travel experience. Her expertise and responsiveness made the entire process seamless and enjoyable.

I wholeheartedly recommend Autour Asia Travel for any travel plans in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Their professionalism and exceptional service truly set them apart.

Our 23-day private tour with AutourAsia was fantastic! It was our third time booking with them, and they once again provided outstanding service. Ms. Van Le, our contact, was incredibly helpful and patient, even as we made several changes to our itinerary. She was available at all times and even assisted with our return flight issues.

We explored Vietnam and Laos extensively, and as picky travelers, we were thoroughly impressed. The company owner greeted us personally, adding a special touch to our trip, and our guides, Mr. Ping and Mr. Sang, were excellent.

If you're considering a trip to Indochina, I highly recommend AutourAsia. Great service and very reasonable prices!

Our recent tour to Vietnam and Cambodia was truly exceptional, featuring a mix of visits to both well-known attractions and hidden gems off the beaten path. The entire experience was made memorable by the warm hospitality, attentiveness, and high quality of services provided throughout our stay.

One highlight of our trip was the cooking class in Hoi An Ecotour, where we had the opportunity to learn how to prepare traditional Vietnamese dishes like Nem spring rolls and flower salad. The hands-on experience was both fun and educational, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for the local cuisine.

We wholeheartedly recommend this trip to anyone seeking an enriching travel experience. A big thank you to Mr. Duy, Ms. Van Le, and the entire AutourAsia team for their exceptional service and for making our stay so enjoyable.

We reached out to Tina for our trip to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, and the experience she arranged for us was absolutely wonderful. Our time in the Mekong was filled with unforgettable and authentic experiences that truly allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culture and lifestyle.

Among the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to make rice paper by hand, which was not only fascinating but also gave us a deep appreciation for the skill and effort involved in this traditional craft. We also visited a coconut candy factory, where we observed the intricate process of making these delicious treats and even had the chance to taste them fresh from the production line. One of the most memorable parts of our journey was rowing down the serene waterways in a traditional sampan, surrounded by the lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere of the delta.

We are incredibly grateful to Autour Asia for organizing such a rich and meaningful itinerary, and especially to Tina for her meticulous planning and dedication to providing us with an authentic experience. Her attention to detail and passion for showcasing the beauty and culture of Vietnam truly made this trip special. Thank you, Tina, for an unforgettable adventure in the Mekong Delta!

During our time with one of the top travel agencies in Hanoi, we embarked on a memorable 5-day tour that took us through Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, and Lan Ha Bay. Our experience included two days aboard a boat, which were truly exceptional. Lan Ha Bay, with its stunning scenery and charming fishing village on the water, offered a peaceful atmosphere and far fewer crowds compared to Ha Long Bay.

The onboard experience was outstanding—the comfort, service, and meals exceeded all our expectations. I was genuinely impressed by the entire arrangement, thanks in large part to Tina, who expertly managed our itinerary. Her excellent communication and quick responsiveness made a significant difference in our experience. Additionally, I want to express my gratitude to our courteous driver and our two knowledgeable guides, who continually sparked our curiosity and enriched our journey.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the beauty of Vietnam in an unforgettable way.

Initially, I had some reservations because there were only a few reviews available online about this agency. However, I am pleased to report that everything turned out flawlessly from the initial booking through to our return to France.

Madame Van Le promptly responded to our initial inquiry and subsequently arranged a comprehensive 10-day itinerary for us in South Vietnam. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Mr. Nam, our driver, who was waiting for us at the airport in a well-maintained, air-conditioned Ford Everest. He then transported us to our hotel. The following day, we were introduced to Mr. Triều, our guide, who accompanied us throughout our excursion.

The entire stay was seamless, and thanks to this agency, we had the opportunity to explore South Vietnam in the most enjoyable way possible.

Vietnam Weather

Vietnam Weather

If you’re planning to visit Vietnam in July, be prepared for hot and humid weather. The country is located entirely in the tropical belt in the Northern Hemisphere, favoring a tropical climate rather than an equatorial one. Therefore, the temperature in Vietnam in July is quite high, ranging from 33°C to 35°C on average. However, there can be exceptional spikes with temperatures as low as 12°C and as high as 40°C. Southern provinces of Vietnam are closer to the equator. They tend to have warmer weather, which can reach as high as 43°C.

Although Vietnam experiences high temperatures in July, it is possible to cope with them. The temperature usually drops to around 24°C at night, making it more pleasant to engage in outdoor activities. Therefore, you can organize exciting evening events during your stay.

Depending on your exact destination, you may encounter more or less rainfall. The average amount of rainfall observed in Vietnam in July is 97mm, and it may have between 6 and 24 rainy days. Some regions of the country may experience less rainfall than others. The temperature difference between different parts of the country is high and the number of rainy days can vary greatly. Therefore, it is best to check the weather forecast at your destination before you go.

In the North: Heavy rains

The northern part of Vietnam receives most of its heavy rains in July and August, and hiking is not recommended as the rain soaks the mountains. Temperatures in northern Vietnam remain at their peak this month, with a stifling and very humid average of 30°C (86°F) in Hanoi.

Hanoi in July

In July, Hanoi often has sudden downpours

Tip: Mosquitoes are at their peak – bring plenty of insect repellent and rain gear.

In the Central: Beautiful, dry, and sometimes rainy

The beaches and low-lying coastal areas in central Vietnam are still in a rain shadow zone that will last until August, promising dry and sunny weather. Temperatures are at their peak this month (with an average of around 31°C/88°F in Hue, the hottest part of the country).

The summer monsoons bring a lot of rain to the Central Highlands, making July not a good month for trekking but perfectly suitable for spending time on the beaches. If you are looking for sunlight, bring sunscreen and be prepared for crowded beaches, especially on weekends, as July is in the middle of the high season for domestic travel, when Vietnamese families take their summer vacations.

Tip: Bring sunscreen and rain gear.

In the South: Hot and heavy rains

July is one of the rainiest months in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, with daily downpours. The average temperature drops to around 27°C (80°F), but highs can still reach 32°/90°F. These showers usually take place in the afternoon, but you can still count on many sunny and dry hours.

Tip: Bring sunglasses, summer hats, sunscreen, portable mini-fans, a lightweight coat to cover your skin from the sun, spare umbrella or raincoat to avoid getting wet in case of unexpected rain.

Major events in Vietnam in July

What’s more exciting on a trip than enjoying the cultural festivals where you’re going? Check out two major festivals in July not to be missed that Vietnamese people celebrate this month.

War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27th)

On War Invalids and Martyrs Day , various commemorative activities are organized throughout the country, such as burning incense sticks and candles at the Martyrs Cemetery, visiting and giving gifts to deserving individuals and heroic Vietnamese mothers, etc. Take advantage of this month to travel to Vietnam and immerse yourself in the heroic and legendary history of the country!

Tra Co Festival

The coastal city of Mong Cai celebrates the one-week Tra Co festival, from the 30th day of the fifth lunar month to the 6th day of the sixth lunar month, which falls in July according to the Gregorian calendar. The Tra Co festival is held at the Tra Co communal house, which is decorated with antiques. Vietnamese people honor the spiritual guardian of the community, whose sanctuary was built under the Ly dynasty. After ritual processions, there are cooking competitions, calligraphy contests, tug-of-war, stilt-walking, and other fun games.

Vietnam - weather & travel conditions in July

Vietnam weather in july.

July is a hot month of the year in Vietnam with both temperature and humidity is high. It is also the raining season in the North and South of Vietnam and the beginning of typhoon season with storms occasionally hit the coast of the country and cause rain for a few days at affected place. Anyway, most of the time is dry with sunlight and since Vietnam is a long country so you can always find some places to see even there is a typhoon.

The North of Vietnam is in middle of summer. Precipitation is higher than previous month but it does not mean you can see rain everyday. Rains just come may be once or twice a week for a short time, normally one or two hours then stop.  Hanoi, Ninh Binh and surroundings are expected to be hot whilst Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island are more pleasant thanks to the ocean breeze.

The far north mountainous area such as Sa Pa and Ha Giang is cooler thanks to its high elevation but the wet might make trekking difficult. The same thing happens in the area of Da Lat and Central Highland.

Central Vietnam including Hue , Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang is still in the dry season with temperatures remain high at the average of 33ºC. All beaches offer excellent condition with plenty of sunshine and blue skies expected throughout the month.

The South of Vietnam is in the middle of the wet season with downpours happen almost every day or two for short time in the afternoon. Anyway, the rest of the day time is expected to be dry and bright. Average temperature this time stay between 31 - 32ºC

How to do and what to expect if travel to Vietnam in July

If you plan to travel to Vietnam in July then remember that the hot weather is the fact you should consider. Anyway, that is not a big thing to worry about if you know how to plan your itinerary properly. Some people might say that summer months including July are the best time to visit Vietnam since it is sunny and clear.

It is the best way to take an easy classic style for your vacation. Visiting to most of places is possible but avoid burdening yourself with to much activities. Beach relaxing, comfort resort and cruises should be good choices.

When you travel in the hot weather, just dress light, loose fitting and drink enough water. Sun hat or an umbrella will help to protect you from the sun and sunglasses and sun cream are necessary to avoid any bad effect of the tropical sunlight.

Although there may be short downpours in the south and north, many people see no rain at all.

This time is really good to enjoy beaches along the country at their best condition. Long biking or outdoor adventures (except in water and the sea) are not recommended but walking and easy style travel is more than appropriate.

Due to the wet, trekking in mountainous is sometime rather difficult and unadvisable. This time is the low season for foreign tourist so you most likely to have better prices for some services such as restaurant, bar and accommodation in most of cities.

Tips for visiting Vietnam in July

Vietnam weather & when to go: July

Vietnam july weather overview.

July is a very similar story to June; a mixed bag in terms of weather. The centre of Vietnam remains hot and predominantly dry with the odd light shower expected. The south is now in the midst of its wet season with daily downpours to be expected whilst the north is well into summer mode with high temperatures and rain the norm. Visitor numbers remain lower than earlier in the year and the central beaches still promise a great deal of sunshine. Trekking is off the cards for most regions however, with more rain in the northern mountains and central highlands.

Vietnam

Vietnam weather & when to go

Pick a month below, north vietnam, central vietnam, south vietnam, july’s weather in detail, hanoi, halong bay, sapa, ha giang, mu cang chai, ninh binh & mai chau.

The north of the country remains in summer meaning you can expect plenty of hot weather as well as rain and at times storms (avg temp: 30 °C). Halong Bay and Hanoi are prone to heavy showers at this time of year, infact July is one of the wettest months of the year in Hanoi. The mountains to the north are also very wet with trekking unadvisable throughout the month.

Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat & Central Highlands

The good news continues on the beaches of Hoi An , Danang and Nha Trang with plenty of sunshine and blue skies expected throughout the month. Temperatures remain high and whilst still predominantly dry, the odd shower is not out of place helping to temper the hot weather (avg temp: 31 °C). Hue is experiencing similar conditions but to the west Dalat and the Central Highlands high rainfall makes extensive trekking and adventure activities unadvisable.

Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Ho Tram & Long Hai, Con Dao & Phu Quoc

The south is now firmly into its wet season. However this is unlikely to be severe and whilst the showers will be slightly heavier than in previous months you can still expect plenty of dry and bright daylight hours (avg temp: 29°C). If you're planning to dive around the island of Con Dao, favourable water conditions can still be enjoyed in July, although realistically it is the last month of the dive season.

Best time to visit Vietnam

Lat afternoon sun over the islands of Halong bay, Vietnam

The best time to visit Vietnam is from March to April when rainfall is low and temperatures are milder.

In a country more than 1,000 miles long, the weather in Vietnam varies considerably as you go from north to south, from a temperate to a tropical climate. While this variety makes Vietnam a year-round destination, spring (March to April) is typically the best time to visit the entire country, when days are generally pleasant, temperatures are moderate and rainfall is light. Tropical monsoons bring heavy rains and occasional flooding during other parts of the year, while extreme temperatures can make summer days uncomfortably hot and sticky.

Here is our guide for the best time to visit different regions of Vietnam.

The north of Vietnam experiences cold dry winters from December to February, where overnight temperatures can dip to 39°F. The summer months (May to August) are typically very hot and humid. The best time to visit northern Vietnam is during spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November), when days are generally warm and sunny.

The coast of central Vietnam is often battered with typhoons during its wet season. It’s difficult to predict when these heavy rains and hurricane-like winds can hit coastal cities like Hoi An, but generally, typhoon seasons runs from August to November. The rainy season usually subsides in February, when you can expect warmer temperatures and more sunshine. While travelers will experience pleasant weather in Central Vietnam any time between February and August, sunny 86°F days are the norm in July and August.

South Vietnam experiences warm, pleasant temperatures year-round, making travel good at any time. The dry season generally runs from December to May and a rainy season runs from June through November. While flooding can occur, rain usually comes in short bursts and rarely impacts travel. In fact, the monsoon season is often the best time for photography as dramatic thunderheads float across the Mekong Delta and rice fields turn a vibrant emerald green. Some, however, might find temperatures unbearable from March to May, when the mercury regularly reaches 104°F.

Best for: exploring Hoi An’s Old Town, swimming and other water-based activities.

While it might be winter, January is considered one of the best times to visit Vietnam as the country experiences warm, sunny and relatively dry weather. Temperatures and weather patterns can differ slightly depending on your location in the north, south or central part of Vietnam but, on average, you can expect highs of around 77°F and low humidity levels.

The atmosphere is also likely to be festive thanks to various Luna New Year (Tet) celebrations happening around the country, so make sure you get involved as much as you can. Popular destinations to visit during January include Hoi An and the southern islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao for some much-needed beach time.

Best for: bar hopping in Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta day trips and lounging at rooftop pools.

Weather patterns are generally at their best in February, meaning mostly dry and sunny days with temperatures at an average of 73°F. Central and south Vietnam tend to be warmer than the north, so if you’re after a beach holiday, head to the southern islands for ultimate relaxation or to Ho Chi Minh City if you want those rooftop pool vibes.

February is also likely to be busy with Luna New Year (Tet) festivities ongoing, but you can escape all the hustle and bustle on a day trip to the Mekong Delta, where water levels are high enough to see the floating markets in all of their glory.

Best for: exploring national parks, rainforest walks and dining on Vietnamese cuisine.

Temperatures in March are on the rise, especially in central and southern Vietnam, where highs can get to a sweat-inducing 84°F+. Northern Vietnam is still relatively cool with plenty of sunshine during the month, so you can get outside and start exploring some of this country’s beautiful national parks and rainforest areas. There’s also never a bad time to try Vietnamese cuisine but March is one of the best months for growing star fruit and rambutan, so make sure to taste these sweet snacks during your trip.

Best for: Hue Festival celebrations, learning about ancient traditions and temple visits.

April is still firmly entrenched in Vietnam’s ‘best time to visit’ season and enjoys warm but comfortable temperatures; however, a transitional period (weather-wise) is just around the corner, so expect an increase in rainfall and humidity levels, especially in the south.

The peak season crowds are also starting to thin out in April, so it’s a good time to visit popular temples such as Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi and Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue.

Best for: pottery village visits, exploring historical buildings and wandering through markets.

While May is technically the first month of the wet season, it still remains a popular time to visit Vietnam because of its generally favorable weather. However, you can expect different weather patterns depending on your location due to the varying climates. Rainfall is starting to increase in the northern regions, such as Hanoi and the Sapa Valley, while central Vietnam retains temperatures of around 86°F and enjoys blue skies and relatively dry days.

Best for: museum visits, cycling and trips to Con Dao National Park.

While it boasts the title of ‘hottest month in Vietnam’, June is still a relatively good month to visit the central regions of the country with sunny days that are perfect for cycling and relaxing on the beaches in Danang and Nha Trang. The same can’t be said for the south, where downpours are now a daily occurrence. The slight positive, if you’re visiting Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho in June, is that while these daily showers are heavy, they’re often short-lived and occur in the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to wander outside in the mornings.

While it’s raining, you might want to spend your time in some of the fascinating museums in Ho Chi Minh City, such as the War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace or do some serious shopping while you wait for the rain to ease up. June also marks the start of Green Turtle nesting season on the beaches of Con Dao Island. If you’re in the vicinity, visiting Con Dao National Park to hear about their conservation program will add another layer of awesomeness to your trip.

Best for: beach days, diving and checking out UNESCO World-Heritage-listed sites.

July is considered to be in the middle of the low season in Vietnam, so popular destinations like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are less crowded and accommodation is generally cheaper. However, the weather varies a lot from region to region, so you must plan accordingly to avoid disappointment or disruption to your travel plans.

Central Vietnam’s weather patterns remain relatively the same as in previous months, so spending time in Hue and Hoi An are good options if you’re into plenty of sunshine and rain-free days. The northern regions, such as Halong Bay and Sapa, experience hot, stormy weather with temperatures reaching 86°F+ most days, while the south is still firmly in its wet season, so a mix of rainy days and sunny weather is the norm.

Best for: watching baby Green Turtles hatch, learning how to cook Vietnamese food and beach lounging.

If you’re set on trekking through the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, then August isn’t the month to travel in, but if you’re more interested in lounging out on beaches in Hoi An and Danang, then start blocking out the dates in your calendar – you’re good to go.

Yes, temperatures in central Vietnam can reach beyond 86°F+ but short bursts of rain are common (especially towards the end of the month), and they’ll give you a slight reprieve from the heat. Watching baby Green Turtles hatch should also be on the agenda if you’re visiting Con Dao Island as they start their slow but adorable journey to the sea from mid-August onwards.

Best for: Mid-Autum Festival celebrations, trips to Hoan Kiem Lake and exploring the Mu Cang Chai valley.

September sees both the northern and southern regions emerge from their hot and humid seasons while central Vietnam enters its monsoonal era – think torrential downpours and flooding in places such as Hoi An and the caves of Phong Nha. While typhoon season technically started in June (and runs until November), they’re more likely to occur in September, so be aware of changing weather conditions and keep up to date with local advice.

Destinations like Hanoi and Phu Quoc experience 14 and 17 days of rain, respectively (out of the month), so they still promise plenty of days where the sun is shining and temperatures aren’t too warm. There’s also celebration in the air thanks to the Mid-Autumn Festival and Vietnam Independence Day, both occurring in September. Why not make the most of these cultural events and immerse yourself as much as you can?

Best for: Keo Pagoda Festival celebrations, Halloween festivities and day trips to Moc Chau.

While October’s weather isn’t optimal country-wide, it’s still possible to have a great holiday in Vietnam during this time - in fact, it’s probable. Temperatures are starting to come down again after summer heat in the northern regions, while typhoons are less likely to occur in the south. However, central Vietnam is still in the thick of its wet period so it’s best to avoid those areas if you want to spend your holiday outside enjoying the country’s beautiful landscapes.

Best for: Halong Bay cruises, fishing and mountain hiking.

Move aside central Vietnam; November is the northern regions’ time to shine (literally). The rainy days of the summer season are finally gone (mostly) and temperatures are no longer stifling, so it’s the perfect time to explore the country’s breathtaking mountains.

Beachside destinations such as Phan Tiet and Mui Ne in Vietnam’s south are also ready to wave goodbye to typhoon season and hello to excited travelers looking to make the most of the region’s sunny, clear weather. Indulge in 81°F days and spend your time laying out on pristine beaches or swimming in crystal-clear waters.

Best for: island life, performing Tai Chi and Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations

Fantastic weather is well and truly on the cards for southern Vietnam in December with near-perfect conditions and comfortable temperatures. Humidity levels are also low with little to no rainfall expected throughout the month. Enjoy your time outside by walking in parks, laying out on a beach or participating in some Tai Chi.

Central Vietnam should still be avoided if you’re not keen on stormy weather; however, expected rainfall does decrease dramatically so it’s entirely possible to get lucky with a few clear days if you’re traveling to this region in September. Preparations for Christmas and the New Year also ramp up as the month goes on with cities nationwide getting into the festive spirit by decorating storefronts and hosting markets.

Vietnam in July - Weather, Events and Festivals, Best Places to Visit

Vietnam has been an astonishing country to rejuvenate and is visited by a large number of tourists throughout the year. The summers in Central Vietnam and the monsoons in North and South Vietnam in July are perfect for enjoyment. The number of foreign visitors is still lower in July than in other summertimes, making it easy to find affordable bookings and enjoy the destinations in a quieter space. In this article, we have enlisted a bunch of information about the places that you can visit and the festivals that you can be part of in Vietnam in July.

Weather in Vietnam in July

Weather in July is a blend of warmth and plentiful monsoon in Vietnam, which is somewhat similar to June. This is the time when this southeastern peninsula is moderately affected by southwest monsoons, leading to daily downpours in South Vietnam. Different parts of the country experience a range of temperatures, but 31 degrees is the average temperature that hovers over Vietnam in July.

Northern Mountain Region - Sapa, Ha Giang, Bac Ha, Mu Cang Chai, Haiphong

July is the monsoon month in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam. If you are not bothered by light rains in hilly areas, then you must not skip Sapa and Mu Cang Chai. Yellow rice fields, dusky weather, drizzling, and warm coffee are the reasons that make July a peak month to visit SaPa and Mu Cang Chai. Families must not prefer to go to mountain regions as trekking is off the cards in July.

North Vietnam - Hanoi, Halong Bay, Cuc Phuong, Mai Chau & Ninh Binh

North Vietnam has hot weather with heavy rains, with temperatures ranging from 26-34°C. Hanoi and Halong Bay bear one of the wettest months in July. However, rains are short and often occur in the afternoon, thus promising many daylight hours.

Central Vietnam - Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Dalat, Quy Nhon & Nha Trang

Central Vietnam promises dry and sunny weather in July, with an average temperature of 31°C. Coastal lowlands - Hoi An, Danang, and Hue make July the best time to rejuvenate under the sun, but be prepared for crowded breaches. Meanwhile, in Dalat and Central Highlands, there is plentiful rainfall.

South Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City, The Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc and Con Dao, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Ho Tram & Long Hai

July is the peak monsoon season in Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta, with humid and daily heavy but short-lasting afternoon pours with temperatures ranging from 26-35°C. Meanwhile, in the far south, sunny weather allows for visits to the islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao.

Events and Festivals in Vietnam in July

The seaside city of Mong Cai celebrates the one-week festival ‘Tra Co Festival’ from the 30th day of the fifth lunar month to the 6th day of the sixth lunar month. The Tra Co Festival is organized at Tra Co Communal House, which is decorated with antiques. Vietnamese honor the spiritual guardian of the community, whose shrine was built during the Le Dynasty. After the ritual processions, there are contests like cooking contests, calligraphy writing, tug of war, stilts, and other fun games. ‘Mr.Elephant’ is a unique feature of the Tra Co Festival where the person who owns the fattest pig wins.

2. Hoi An Lantern Festival

hoi an lantern festival

A spectacular night view on the 14th night of every month in Hoi An, Vietnam, is worth experiencing as the city celebrates the festival of lights. Lighting lanterns are considered to be a good luck and fortune charm in Vietnam. Hoi An Lantern festival is considered to be an incredible moment to follow the rituals of worshipping deceased relatives. The festival not only brings closeness and happiness but is a wise method to save electricity.

Best Time to Visit Vietnam: A detailed weather guide

Best Time to Visit Vietnam: A detailed weather guide

  • on Dec 29, 2017       By: LucyH

For tourists intending to explore Vietnam, especially those visiting Vietnam for the first time, “How is the weather in Vietnam?” “When should I visit Vietnam?” and “When is the best time to visit Vietnam?” are among the most commonly asked questions.

Indeed, the weather is an important factor to consider when traveling. This guide, developed by Authentik Vietnam, provides tips for choosing the best time to visit Vietnam depending on your climate preferences and planned activities.

Vietnam’s climate and weather by regions

Vietnam, with its territory extending from North to South, presents a great climatic diversity influenced by its geographical position and topography. Each region – the North, Center, and South – offers a unique climate and varied tourist experiences throughout the year.

Northern Vietnam comprises major cities such as Hanoi , Ninh Binh, Ha Long, Mai Chau, Pu Luong , as well as mountainous northeastern provinces such as Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Bac Kan , which are located at the highest latitudes in the country. There is also the northwest region , home to Nghia Lo, Tu Le, Mu Cang Chai, Sapa , and Bac Ha . The North Of Vietnam is characterized by a tropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons: spring (February-May), summer (June-August), autumn (September-November), and winter (December-January).

Due to its location close to the Northern Tropic and its mountainous terrain, the North of Vietnam is subject to significant climatic variations . Summers are hot and rainy, dominated by the southwest monsoon, which brings abundant rainfall. Winters, on the other hand, are cold and dry, under the influence of the northeast monsoon winds, which can sometimes cause significant drops in temperature, especially in mountainous regions.

The North is particularly popular with tourists between October and April , the ideal period from late autumn to spring. This period offers a mild and pleasant climate, perfect for exploring picturesque landscapes such as Ha Long Bay , the rice terraces of Sapa , or Hanoi 's historic sites.

Central Vietnam , covering Phong Nha-Ke Bang to Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, and Nha Trang , is marked by the Hai Van Pass , which separates the northern climate from that of the south. The varied topography of this region, with coastal areas and mountains, is the reason for significant climatic differences.

Coastal cities benefit from a more moderate climate and maritime influences, ensuring more stable temperatures throughout the year. However, mountainous regions can experience cooler temperatures and heavier rainfall. The rainy season is concentrated mainly in October and November, when storms and heavy rain can occur, causing some areas difficult to visit.

Apart from these rainy months, Central Vietnam is ideal for tourism . The beaches of Nha Trang and Da Nang , the cultural heritage of Hue and Hoi An, and the spectacular caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang attract visitors all year round. The months of April to September , with their sunny days, are particularly good for beach activities and sightseeing in this part of Vietnam .

Southern Vietnam , consisting of Ho Chi Minh City , the Mekong Delta , and the heavenly beaches of Con Dao, Phu Quoc, and Phan Thiet , is located near the equator and enjoys a humid tropical climate . This region is characterized by two distinct seasons: the dry season (November-April) and the rainy season (May-October) . During the dry season, temperatures vary between 25°C and 35°C with sunny days and little rainfall, providing ideal conditions for exploring the floating markets of the Mekong or relaxing on the beaches. The rainy season, on the other hand, is marked by frequent, intense, but generally short showers, contributing to the lush green landscapes. Geographically, the region's proximity to the equator means that there is little seasonal variation in temperature, but abundant rainfall has a strong influence on daily life and farming activities in the region. This humid tropical climate, with its two well-defined seasons, shapes the unique visitor experience, combining constant warmth with lush nature.

Where and when to travel to Vietnam

Each region in Vietnam offers a unique experience owing to its varied climates and diverse landscapes. Whether you're drawn to the charm of the North, the sunny beaches of the Center, or the constant warmth of the South, Vietnam has something to offer every traveler. Here are some recommendations to better understand the climate depending on the month, as well as to identify the ideal activities for each period.

Travel to Vietnam in January and February

While winter persists in the North with cold and foggy weather , especially in the mountainous areas , the weather in the Central region during January and February i s ideal for outdoor activities . As for the South , the region benefits from a sunny and dry climate , perfect for beach outings.

Weather and where to visit in Vietnam in January-February

During the first two months of the year, the Northern region of Vietnam is covered in the cold of winter . This is a good time to explore the picturesque landscape of Ha Long. Even though many aquatic activities such as swimming and kayaking can be refrained due to the cold waters, a cruise on Ha Long Bay still promises to be an unforgettable experience, as the fog adds a touch of magic, bringing a mystical vibe to the bay. Visits to historical and cultural sites in Hanoi and Ninh Binh benefit from the unique atmosphere owing to the chilly weather. Trekking enthusiasts will find the cooler weather perfect for exploring the scenic northeastern or Mai Chau-Pu Luong regions. Sapa, however, is not advisable due to the dense fog, which limits visibility and adventurous activities.

In Central Vietnam , the mild weather with low precipitation during January and February creates ideal conditions for outdoor activities and cultural visits, such as exploring the Hue Imperial City, the royal tombs, or strolling through the charming streets of Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the water might be a bit chilly, the beaches of Da Nang and Hoi An promise a magnificent getaway with stunning landscapes in which to relax and soak up the sun.  For adventurous travelers, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh is ideal to head to.

In the South of Vietnam, during January and February, the weather is warm and sunny with low rainfall , making it the perfect time to enjoy the seaside resorts in Phu Quoc , Con Dao, Mui Ne, Nha Trang ,... and other open-air activities. Featuring sunny skies and turquoise waters, these destinations are excellent for relaxing, swimming, and water sports. This is also an ideal period to embark on a river cruise in the Mekong Delta and explore this region's floating markets, lush orchards, and green landscapes.

Regional festivals to discover

In Vietnam, the period of January- February is when many traditional festivals occur , making this time an ideal occasion for tourists to learn more about the local culture.

Tet Nguyen Dan (Vietnamese Lunar New Year)

Marking the start of a new lunar year, Tet Nguyen Dan is the most important festival in Vietnam. This is a time of renewal and purification, when families gather to honor their ancestors, exchange wishes for prosperity and happiness, and take part in various traditions such as cleaning houses, decorating with Tet’s signature ornamental plants, and preparing Tet’s typical dishes. The Vietnamese Lunar New Year in 2025 will fall on January 29th.

Hang Ma Street in Hanoi in preparation for Tet

Chua Huong Festival (Perfume Pagoda Festival)

This festival kicks off on the 6th day of the first lunar month and lasts until the end of the third lunar month at Perfume Pagoda in the suburbs of Hanoi. Being one of Vietnam's most significant Buddhist festivals, every year the Chua Huong festival draws thousands of pilgrims who come to pray for health, happiness and prosperity. This festival includes religious ceremonies, processions, and traditional performances.

Giong Festival

On the 6th day of the first lunar month, the Giong Festival takes place yearly at the Giong Temple in Hnaoi’s Soc Son district. The festival commemorates Giong, a legendary hero who is believed to have protected Vietnam from foreign invaders. Processions, battle re-enactments, and worship offerings are all part of the festivities.

Lim Festival

The Lim Festival is held every 13th day of the first lunar month at Lim Village, Bac Ninh Province. Renowned for Quan Ho singing, a type of Vietnamese folk music, this festival celebrates love and folk culture, with participants singing traditional Quan Ho songs in colorful costumes.

Yen Tu Festival

The Yen Tu Festival, which begins on the 10th day of the first lunar month on Yen Tu Mountain in Quang Ninh Province, is a major Buddhist pilgrimage during which devotees climb the mountain to visit pagodas and temples. The festival honors Buddha and the founders of Vietnamese Zen.

Important information for tourists

Holidays: During Tet, Vietnamese people have a week-long holiday, which means that most shops and services, especially in the northern part of the country, are unavailable. Because of this, service charges tend to increase, leading to a significant addition to the travel budget.

Transport booking: When traveling between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, it's recommended to book flights and train tickets in advance. Demand for flights and trains from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi before Tet, and from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City after Tet, is especially high. Therefore, it's best to make your bookings as early as possible to secure your travel plans.

Service quality : The quality of services before and after Tet might be rather less reliable. Before Tet, the atmosphere is hustling and bustling with preparations for the festival, while during Tet, the streets are quieter as Vietnamese gather with their families. After Tet, it’s time for spring excursions and festivals. Therefore, it would be ideal to plan your trip before or after Tet to fully appreciate the festive atmosphere.

Accommodation: Opting for a homestay can be a great way to experience Tet alongside the locals and discover traditions authentically.

Traditional markets: In North Vietnam, Tet markets generally open until New Year’s Eve (the 30th of the last lunar month of the old year, also known as 30 Tet). However, markets in mountainous regions close at 30 Tet and remain closed until the end of the first lunar month. As for the southern region, the floating markets cease their Tet activities on the 28th of the last lunar month and resume after the 5th of the first lunar month. It is therefore important to plan your visits around these dates.

Pilgrimage sites and festivals: If you don't like crowds, avoid popular pilgrimage and festival sites, especially on weekends. Be mindful that attractions such as Perfume Pagoda and Ninh Binh tend to be extremely crowded.

Mountainous regions: For those planning to head to the mountainous regions during this time, don't forget to pack warm clothing as the temperatures can drop significantly.

Travel to Vietnam in March and April

In March and April , Vietnam benefits from pleasant weather in all three main regions .

Spring has arrived in the north, characterized by a cool, pleasant climate. The drizzles of February are over, giving way to fine, bright weather. In the center, the weather remains ideal for outdoor activities. The same is true for the south, where March and April continue to be the dry season, marked by comparatively hot and dry weather.

Climate and where to visit in Vietnam in March-April

This period marks the peak tourist season for foreign visitors , owing to favorable weather conditions throughout the country.

The months of March and April are unquestionably the best times to visit Vietnam , as this period allows tourists to visit Vietnam’s main attractions from north to south without being hampered by bad weather. Whether it’s Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City, each destination offers a unique experience.

A cruise on Ha Long Bay is highly recommended at this time of the year . The weather is sunny and bright, but not yet too hot, providing a pleasant and memorable experience at this must-visit destination in Vietnam.

The climate is also perfect for trekking enthusiasts, especially in the north . At this time of the year, rice fields in Mai Chau, Pu Luong, and mountain valleys such as Nghia Lo, Tu Le, and Ha Giang are already planted, offering lush green landscapes. The sights in the northeastern regions, such as Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Ba Be, are also beautiful at this time of the year. However, Mu Cang Chai and Sapa do, as yet, not have their terraced rice fields planted at this moment of the year due to the lack of water for the plantation. In the center and the south, some regions are also suitable for trekking , offering diverse landscapes and unique experiences.

The period from March to April is when various traditional festivals take place in different parts of the country. While they are often local in scope, these festivals offer an authentic immersion in Vietnamese culture.

Thay Pagoda Festival

This festival, on the 7th day of the 3rd lunar month at the Thay Pagoda on the outskirts of Hanoi, honors Tu Dao Hanh, a Buddhist famous for his powers of healing and miracles. Celebrations include water puppet shows, processions, and prayers.

Hung King Temple Festival

Held annually on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month in Phu Tho Province, this national festival is to commemorate the Hung Kings, the legendary founders of Vietnam.  Ceremonies include solemn processions, traditional dances, and offerings to ancestors.

Ba Trieu Temple Festival

The Ba Trieu Temple Festival is held on the 21st day of the 2nd lunar month in Thanh Hoa to pay tribute to a national heroine who led a revolt against Chinese invaders in the 3rd century. The festivities include commemorative ceremonies, traditional dances, and games.

Helpful Travel Tips for Visitors to Vietnam in March-April

Since March and April coincide with peak tourist season, booking your flight tickets, accommodations, tour guides, and other services in advance is crucial.

Flight tickets : Book international and domestic flights several months in advance to get the best fares and avoid sold-out situations.

Accommodations: Hotels, homestays, and other types of accommodation tend to book up quickly; hence, plan ahead and book early to guarantee your place and benefit from the best rates.

Guides and excursions: Tour guides and nice excursions are likely to be booked weeks in advance, especially in popular attractions. Make sure to plan your activities and book as soon as possible.

Local transport: If you plan to travel between different regions in Vietnam by plane, train, or bus, book your tickets in advance to avoid inconvenience.

Travel to Vietnam in May and June

If you wish to avoid the tourist crowds of March-April and enjoy more space and tranquility, May-June is the ideal time for your trip.

The summer arrives in the North , bringing warm temperatures. Rainfall remains low, and there are no storms yet. Since the skies are clear, it is ideal for admiring the stunning sunrises and sunsets over Ha Long Bay.

The Central experiences an increase in temperature but has not yet reached the summer heat peaks. Rain is still infrequent, meaning relatively pleasant conditions for visits.

As for the southern part of the country, the rainy season begins , characterized by hot temperatures and frequent showers in the late afternoon. Though the rain is generally short, it is a good idea to keep an umbrella handy in case of sudden showers.

Climate and where to visit in Vietnam in May-June

Despite the heat in all parts of Vietnam, it is still possible to make the most of sightseeing in May and June . Historical and cultural sites offer rewarding exploration for travelers. For photography enthusiasts, this is the right time for stunning works of art, owing to the spectacular landscapes. While the golden rice terraces in Mu Cang Chai and Sapa offer picturesque scenes, harvesting activities in the Red River Delta, Mai Chau, and Pu Luong enliven the landscapes. The clear skies also offer unforgettable sunrises and sunsets over Ha Long Bay, giving magical moments for photographers and visitors alike.

The weather conditions favor trekking in northern Vietnam . The valleys offer striking visual spectacles, owing to the golden rice paddies ready to be harvested. In Mu Cang Chai and Sapa, the local's irrigation of the rice fields is a fascinating sight to witness, as it showcases centuries-old farming traditions in a majestic mountain setting. In the northeast, the cool climate is ideal for memorable treks through lush, rolling landscapes, offering visitors a total immersion in natural beauty and local culture.

Since the rainy season has arrived, heading to beaches in southern Vietnam during this time is not recommended . Instead, travelers should opt for beaches in the central , such as Hue , Hoi An, Quy Nhon, and Phu Yen, where the conditions are ideal for making the most of the calm sea and relaxing by the water, away from the hustle and bustle of the popular tourist areas.

Fine weather and calm waters make Ha Long Bay a must-see destination, as does a cruise in this breathtaking natural setting. The conditions favor boat trips through the famous karst islands, discovering hidden caves and fascinating rock formations, and swimming in the emerald waters of this UNESCO World Heritage bay. Each cruise offers a unique opportunity to embrace nature and appreciate the splendor of Ha Long Bay, creating lasting memories of a trip to Vietnam.

The months of May and June are great times to discover Vietnam , with a variety of cultural events and favorable conditions for travelers.

In May, the Hue Festival is a major event that immerses visitors in Vietnamese culture. Celebrating Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, the festival is known for colorful parades, traditional performances, and exhibitions of local crafts. During one week of the festival, the streets come alive with folk dances and displays of ancient crafts, providing a captivating immersion in Vietnamese history and culture.

Held in early June, the Tam Coc Trang An Golden Season Festival in Tam Coc is a unique celebration of the rice terraces of this picturesque region. Located in Ninh Binh province, Tam Coc is renowned for its spectacular karst landscapes and winding rivers lined with rice paddies, which form an excellent natural setting for cultural events such as open-air theatre performances and traditional Vietnamese music concerts.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Southern Fruit Festival , also in June, showcases the richness and diversity of Vietnamese tropical fruit. Visitors can browse exhibitions featuring a host of exotic fruits, sample tastings, and learn the secrets of Vietnam’s fruit growing.

Helpful Travel Tips for Visitors to Vietnam in May and June

During the April 30–May 1 holiday, it is advisable to avoid popular tourist attractions such as Cat Ba, Ninh Binh, Hoi An, and Sapa, as these destinations might witness overcrowding, traffic jams, and an increase in service charges due to the large numbers of Vietnamese coming for vacations. For a more relaxing and peaceful experience, plan your trip and activities outside these dates or opt for less popular locations.

Weekends too attract local crowds to Vietnam’s beaches. Therefore, it is recommended to opt for weekday beach visits . Central beaches such as Hue, Hoi An, Quy Nhon, and Phu Yen provide the perfect elements for a seaside vacation with their clear waters and tranquil beaches, which are excellent for swimming and water activities.

Travel to Vietnam in July and August

Visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports under sunny skies and pleasant temperatures in unspoiled natural settings. As opposed to the beaches of the center, those of the south can be affected by heavy rain during this period, imposing certain limitations on beach vacations and outdoor activities.

Despite the occasional risk of storms, Ha Long Bay remains a must visit cruising destination . The iconic karst formations, mysterious caves and emerald waters make it a magical place to explore. Travelers are advised to check the weather forecast regularly and plan their cruise accordingly to avoid any cancellations due to adverse weather conditions.

Festivals and Helpful Travel Tips for Visitors to Vietnam in July and August

Around this period, Vietnam celebrates several traditional festivals, including the Mid-Autumn Festival on different dates according to the lunar calendar. This festival is particularly popular among Vietnamese families, attracting many local visitors to major tourist destinations such as Hanoi and Hội An. It offers an excellent opportunity to discover Vietnamese culture through lantern shows, folk dances, and regional culinary specialties.

Avoid crowds: Given that July and August are holiday months for large numbers of Vietnamese, tourist attractions such as Cat Ba and Da Nang are likely to experience heavy crowds, especially on weekends . Foreign visitors are advised to plan their visits to popular sites on weekdays to avoid crowds and price increases.

Advanced bookings: To guarantee availability and benefit from the best rates, it is advisable to book your accommodation, guided tours and transport in advance. This is particularly crucial during the peak tourist season, when services can be booked up quickly, especially in popular locations such as Ha Long Bay and Sapa.

Flexibility in scheduling: Considering the possibility of changing weather conditions, especially with typhoon season in the north, it's essential to be flexible in your planning. Having alternatives ready in case plans change is recommended, for example substituting a cruise to Ha Long with a cultural exploration in Hanoi or a scenic visit to Ninh Binh.

Travel to Vietnam in September

September presents an ideal time to visit Vietnam , given the favorable meteorological conditions throughout the country.

In the North, autumn arrives , bringing sunny days and cooler temperatures compared to the previous months. The risk of typhoons is low, allowing safe exploration in the region.

In the Center , the climate is characterized by little rain , excellent for visiting destinations such as Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An, as these cities offer perfect conditions for beach getaways and cultural explorations without being disrupted by showers.

In the South , the rainy season finally starts to come to an end , giving way to sunny days punctuated by occasional rains. Thus, this is the ideal time to explore coastal regions such as Phan Thiết and Vũng Tàu, which are less affected by the season's inclement weather.

What to visit in Vietnam in September?

In Vietnam, September favors various types of travel . Take advantage of the lingering warmth in the mild weather to explore the iconic attractions of the country. Trekking and photography enthusiasts will be delighted in the mountainous northern regions such as Sapa and the northwest, where the rice terraces reach their peak of beauty during the harvest, offering spectacular vistas to capture unforgettable moments. For those seeking seaside relaxation, the tranquil beaches of Vietnam's central coast, such as Huế, Đà Nẵng, Hội An, and Quy Nhon provide ideal getaways. Finally, a cruise through the majestic Ha Long Bay is highly recommended with favorable weather conditions in September, except on stormy days, ensuring an optimal and relaxing cruising experience.

Festivals and Helpful Travel Tips for Visitors to Vietnam in September

September presents an ideal time for tourists coming to Vietnam , not only for the pleasant weather conditions but also for a variety of activities and festivals to discover.

In Hanoi, the Mid-Autumn Festival , celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (usually at the end of September), is a great time to learn about Vietnamese traditions surrounding this festival. During this time, the streets are filled with a festive atmosphere and lit up with colorful lanterns, toys for children and mooncake stalls. This festivity is particularly appreciated by families and offers a unique insight into local culture.

September is the low tourist time for both domestic and international markets , reflected in the reduced accommodation rates and many advantageous offers throughout the country.

Keep in mind that September 2 is a National Public Holiday in Vietnam, which leads to increased crowds at popular tourist attractions such as Sapa, Ninh Binh, and Hoi An. To avoid the crowds and maximize your travel experience, it is advisable to book in advance and opt for non-holiday days. This allows you to take full advantage of the peaceful atmosphere and the special promotions available during this period. Alongside the main attractions in Vietnam, September also offers the opportunity to take part in a variety of local festivals. These cultural events offer a fascinating insight into traditional Vietnamese life, with artistic demonstrations, folk performances, and community festivities. October and November mark the height of the rainy season in central Vietnam . The abundant precipitation can lead to flooding; hence, it is essential to be flexible with travel schedules and follow the weather forecast. Despite the weather, this is still a great time to discover the rich culture and history of the fascinating cities in this part of the country.

Meanwhile, the dry season commences in the south, characterized by sunny days and low rainfall. This is the ideal time to enjoy the tranquil beaches and unspoiled islands such as Phu Quoc, Con Dao, and Mui Ne.

Visitors who come to Hoi An at this time can explore the bustling night markets and take part in unique cultural ceremonies, such as the lantern lighting on the Thu Bon River.

Besides the principal festivals, October and November are times when many contemporary art events take place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. During this period, the Vietnamese cultural landscape is enriched by art exhibitions, concerts, dance, and theatre performances. Art lovers can visit short-lived galleries and artists’ studios for a full immersion in the vibrant art scene,

Helpful Travel Tips for Visitors to Vietnam in October and November

Considering the peak tourist season , it is highly recommended to book accommodation, guided tours, and tickets for special events in advance to make the most of these festivals and minimize the inconveniences. Central cities like Hue and Hoi An, for example, require extra preparation due to their unpredictable weather conditions , which are frequently impacted by typhoons and heavy rain. In contrast, North and South Vietnam generally offer more stable conditions for rewarding cultural and historical explorations. By carefully planning your trip to Vietnam for the months of October and November, you have the opportunity to enjoy a memorable and carefree travel experience.

Choice of destinations

Choose your destinations according to the weather forecast and the cultural events or attractions that you are interested in. As for those who prefer beaches, southern destinations such as Phu Quoc and Mui Ne provide ideal conditions for relaxing by the water.

Advanced Booking

Given Vietnam’s rising tourism demand in October and November, it is for the best that you finish booking in advance. Not only will this guarantee your place, but it will also help you avoid price increases and last-minute inconveniences.

Be prepared for the changing weather

Although the climate is generally favorable at this time of year, still, be prepared for possible weather changes, especially in central regions such as Huế and Hội An, where typhoons and heavy rain can occur. Make sure you have appropriate clothing ready and check the local weather forecast to adjust your itinerary if necessary.

Take part in local festivals

Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the local festivals that enliven Vietnamese towns and villages in October and November. • Crowds and Cost
  • What to Wear in July

July climate data tells a similar story to June's with high precipitation and temperatures — summer and the rainy season reach their peak for most of Vietnam. Rainfall continues high in northern and southern Vietnam. But dry, sunny days are still the norm in Central Vietnam.

Hot temperatures prevail in most of Vietnam, except for some summer retreats. The average temperature keeps above 31°C (88°F) in the daytime.

From the table, you can see the best weather in July is in central Vietnam (Danang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang), where sunny days and blue skies are perfect for a beach vacation. You're suggested to use sun protection, as the average temperature is above 32°C/90°F. Light showers in the afternoon may reduce the heat temporarily.

In northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa), and southern Vietnam (Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc), your travel schedule will be highly affected by rainfall . Flight delays, difficulties on roads, and poor visibility might occur. When traveling to those areas, you're suggested to take rain gear, choose more indoor activities, and always have a "tour plan B" for each day.

These tables sow temperature and rainfall data for the most popular tourist areas:

The Best Places to Visit in Vietnam in July

Considering the rainfall and temperatures, central Vietnam and two summer retreats are recommended for July in Vietnam:

  • Central Vietnam : Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang,
  • Summer retreats : Sapa, Da Lat

1. Da Nang or Nha Trang

Located in central Vietnam, Da Nang and Nha Trang are the two best places to visit in July if you are a beach-lover. Feel the sea breezes at sunset, step on the soft, white, sandy beaches in bare feet, and choose some water sports for fun in the sun...

You could enjoy sunny and blue skies, but expect high temperatures around 35°C (95°F) and crowds. Early booking is recommended. Our 14-Day Vietnam and Cambodia Family Tour is specially designed for a family summer vacation.

In July, Hue is at the height of its summer. Because of the tropical climate, Hue is still dry and hot in July. You might experience some light showers in the afternoon, which rarely affect a trip.

Prosperous in Vietnam's history , this ancient city can tell us the stories hidden behind the relics. History lovers will put it in their bucket lists due to its huge complex of royal tombs, pagodas, and ruins.

Spend a day following the steps of the king of Vietnam inside Hue Citadel, and enjoy its exquisite architecture. Pay a visit to the atmospheric royal tombs and the iconic pagodas.

Influenced by the tropical climate, Hoi An in July is even hotter than in June with an average maximum temperature of 35°C (95°F) in the daytime. So early morning and late afternoon are more advisable for activities.

Famous for its cultural relics and historic buildings , Hoi An can bring you back to the ancient times of Vietnam. T he Full Moon Lantern Festival is always attractive, which is usually held on the full moon days each month.

Despite its history, tailoring a suit or ao dai ('long dress') is one of the top reasons to visit Hoi An. The ao dai is the national costume of Vietnam for women. Making an ao dai usually takes 1–2 days . Contact us for reputable shops and tailors if you'd like them to make you an ao dai or ao gam (the male version).

Situated in the mountainous north, Sapa is usually 5–8°C (9–12°F) cooler than Hanoi . This summer retreat is perfect for escaping the heat of July (the hottest month), with colorful architecture, stunning rice terraces, and diverse minority culture.

Due to Sapa's persistent, heavy rainfall , hiking is not recommended. But you can visit a village, Sapa Market, chat with locals, and get a glimpse of rural life .

You can also have a cup of drink at Cafe in the Clouds and enjoy the mist winding around the valley.

Reputed as a summer retreat , Da Lat attracts travelers with its pleasant weather. Its average temperature is around 18°C (65°F), which is much cooler than most areas of Vietnam.

It features fresh air , beautiful waterfalls and lakes , and blooming flower gardens . This adorable city is the first choice for most Vietnamese couples to spend their honeymoons .

Less Crowding and Cost

July is the off-season in most of Vietnam, when discounted hotels and flights are offered. Most attractions are less frequented.

However, July is Vietnamese students' summer holiday . Most families will flock to beaches. So don't expect any bargains in hotels or restaurants there. Due to the high demand, you're suggested to book your hotels one or two months in advance .

Recommended tours:

  • 5-Day Central Vietnam Culture Discovery
  • 5-Day Central Vietnam Scenery Exploration

What to Wear in July in Vietnam

  • Sun protection : sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • When it rains : waterproof rain jacket, umbrella, rubber boots
  • Loose, breathable clothing that covers your knees and shoulders for cultural sensitivity and sun protection
  • Light, quick-drying clothes for humid days
  • Swim shorts, bathing suit, and flip flops for a beach vacation
  • A warm layer or two of clothing for the cooler evenings in Northern Vietnam
  • Comfortable walking shoes
