I’ve been fortunate enough to travel all over NZ, and one of the sights that I’d recommend to anyone is the Waitomo Caves. Exploring these caves is like stepping into a sort of fairy tale, complete with mystical underground chambers illuminated by thousands of glowworms.

I’ve gone ahead and detailed the 5 top Waitomo Caves tours that are well worth the time and money, with expert guides to lead the way. Let’s jump right in!

New Zealand is a land full of unforgiving, incredible landscapes that will leave you questioning whether you’re still on planet Earth. However, the Waitomo Caves manage to stay near the top of my list for the landmarks that have impressed me the most.

The Black Water Rafting Experience Waitomo Caves Tour remains one of my favorite ways to see this underground wonder, with expert guides who make for a fun and educational experience.

Perhaps the only aspect I didn’t absolutely  love  about the tour was that they didn’t include complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off.

However, locating their rafting company offices was still quite easy – just make sure you have cold-weather clothing (the wetsuits and footwear will be provided depending on the option booked).

Our guides were very funny, kind, and did a great job of making sure everyone received personalized attention throughout.

I should mention that we did have the option to choose between the Labyrinth tour (a 3-hour cave tubing adventure) or the Black Abyss tour (a 5-hour adventure including rappelling down limestone walls)!

We chose the latter as we really wanted the full experience, and we’re adrenaline junkies, so we knew we’d love the rappelling as it included instructors to guide us.

Starting things out, we went on an inner tube down the incredible underground river at the caves, even going down a waterfall and rock slide!

After that, we rappelled over 100 feet into the Ruakuri Cave, which seemed to never end! We were able to zipline through all kinds of beautiful glowworms, climbing underground waterfalls, learning about everything along the way.

Our guides did a great job of instructing us, making sure everyone stayed safe and confident throughout the entire tour.

If you’re looking to explore the Waitomo Caves but are on a tight budget or simply don’t have the flexibility in your itinerary for a longer tour, this is the one for you.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves Guided Tour clocks in at around an hour long, and while it doesn’t include a hotel pickup and drop-off, it’s very easy to fit into even the busiest of schedules.

While it’s a shorter tour, they pack in a lot of info and an utterly beautiful experience in a place unlike any other in the world.

With a small-group setting, you don’t have to worry about being lost in the crowd – expect personalized attention from your guide and have the ability to ask any questions you may have.

We had to head to the caves, but we loved the beautiful drive, which was very easy to do and not tiring at all.

The unique landscapes of New Zealand are neverending, and seeing it on a relaxing drive is quite pleasant. We were able to choose among various tour start times, selecting the one that worked best for us.

Once we arrived at the caves, our guides were nice and welcoming, taking us to the giant cave complex to tour by food.

I loved stopping at the Cathedral Cave, which was really exciting for me as I’m a big fan of acoustics – especially natural wonders that sound like this.

We then took a relaxing, yet wondrous cruise through the famous Glowworm Grotto, which felt like some kind of surreal ride from a theme park or something!

The blue, bioluminescent bugs twinkled, lighting up the caves in a mysterious way as we learned all about what makes them glow. We also learned quite a bit about the geological, historical, and cultural background of these caves, which was a great way to spend an afternoon!

The drive was nice and relaxing, starting with a scenic drive through the picturesque countryside stretching as far as the eye can see. As we cruised along, our guide did a great job of sharing interesting historical and cultural information as we passed various sites.

When we arrived at the Waitomo Caves, I was blown away by the mesmerizing sight of countless twinkling glowworms like a star-studded sky.

Stepping aboard a boat, we glided silently through the underground labyrinth while learning about the geology that makes it possible. After that, we continued on to Rotorua, known for its geothermal magic and rich Maori culture – stopping for some tasty coffee in a little village on the way.

The guided driving tour took us to some of the most famous sites in Rotorua, like the lake, the museum, Government Gardens, Rachel Spring, and the Blue Baths!

We even got to try Manuka Honey and pick up some unique souvenirs, which took a load off my shoulders. All in all, this was a more relaxing way to see not only the caves, but to enjoy the tranquil countryside and natural beauty while appreciating the culture.

This next tour carries quite a few similarities to the previous one, with some very notable differences. You’ll get the chance to have a delicious buffet lunch at a special stop, learn about Maori culture, and many other fascinating activities.

The Rotorua and Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland – Smaller Groups Tour  will show you the Arachnocampa luminosa, solely found in New Zealand, in one of the most beautiful settings out there.

Our guide was not only well-versed in the background of everywhere we went, but was an overall amazing person who made our tour that much more special. The weather on the day we went was a bit rainy in the morning and ended up being sunny in the afternoon so be prepared for everything!

Starting off early in the morning, we took full advantage of the day and made our way first to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to learn about and see wood carving, weaving, and even bone carving!

We then took a quick stroll around the gorgeous Lake Rotorua before arriving in Te Puia, where we had a delicious lunch before exploring mud pools, hot springs, geysers, and many other geothermic features!

I took some amazing photos and videos, having plenty of opportunity to appreciate the different sites without being rushed.

Last but certainly not least, we headed to the famous Waitomo Caves to learn all about the unique Arachnocampa luminosa, local to just New Zealand. We walked into the cave for a guided tour, and on the way out, took a little boat cruising down the river into an outdoor forest!

It was such an amazingly cool experience filled with historical and geological wonders, that I’d recommend it to anyone of any age or background.

This is my only other recommended “short” tour of the Waitomo Caves, which packs in a ton of fun and educational opportunities while still offering a tour that’s easy to fit into any schedule.

The 75-Minute Guided Ruakuri Cave Tour Waitomo  is an intimate experience in the form of a small-group walking tour that really feels like an old friend is taking you around one of the places they know best. Oh, and did I mention it’s also a super budget-friendly tour option?

If you’re looking to explore the caves with children or are worried that your teenagers are going to get bored, this is also the perfect tour option. It’s only an hour and a half long, and the company offers plenty of different start times to further facilitate planning.

It’s also one of the more calm tours as it consists nearly entirely of a walking tour – no rappelling down walls, no waterfalls, etc. This tour is no-frills yet if you’re looking to really learn about the cave system in-depth, I feel that there’s no better way to go for the price.

Our guide was incredible, keeping everything entertaining and engaging, with plenty of great storytelling and information. We learned quite a bit about the history around the caves, like how they were first opened to tourists in the late 1800s by a local Maori Chief, Tane Tinorau.

Used as a burial ground by the Maori, the entrance of the cave is very sacred and features a spiral entrance now to keep it properly protected.

Illuminated beautifully by the Arachnocampa luminosa glowworm pieces only found in New Zealand, it is a super special experience you can literally only have here. If you have a party that tends to get bored easily, please book this tour!

The tube system allows visitors to grab a tube and let the current of the water lead you through the mesmerizing underground experience. Visitors are to wear a swimsuit due to the amount of water that gets splashed as the tube glides along the water. However, visitors can't just tube their way throughout the cave as it involves swimming, walking, and climbing.

Famous for their abundance of glow worms, extensive underground river system and stunning stalactite and stalagmites formations, a trip to the Waitomo caves is a trip to another world. Keep reading to find out why you should discover the Waitomo caves.

Three caves to choose from

Whilst in the Waitomo region you can explore three caves by foot; the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave. Each cave is uniquely magical and comes with its own history and culture.

The Glowworm Caves  are the most famous of the Waitomo caves, having been a tourist attraction for over 130 years. Wonder through the cave and marvel at its tallest chamber, the Cathedral, before embarking on a short boat ride through the glow worm grotto. On the boat ride, you’ll sit in silence (glow worms don’t like noise) and be able to take in the magical creatures lighting up the cave above.

Ruakuri Cave  is the largest cave in the Waitomo area and was discovered between 400 and 500 years ago. Enter this wheelchair accessible cave through a spectacular man-made spiral entrance, which opens up onto an extensive system of limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Learn about the rock formations and see glow worms up close and personal.

And finally we have Aranui Cave . Although Aranui isn’t home to any glow worms, due to the absence of any water, it is home to some of the most spectacular pale brown, pink and white stalactites and stalagmites the Waitomo region has to offer. Everywhere you look in Aranui is adorned with fragile, sparkling formations, which create an enchanted and intimate experience.

Everyone who comes to Waitomo will learn the history, geology and biology behind the land, caves and glowworms that the area is home to. For children, this offers a practical and highly engaging learning experience that can’t be found in the classroom. They can learn what a glowworm is (spoiler alert; it’s not actually a worm), about the culture that surrounds the area, and about the plethora of ecology which makes up the Waitomo region.

Waitomo is more than just caves and glowworms, it a cultural hub and rich in Maori history, myths and legends. On tours of each cave, you’ll learn about the history and origin story of the cave , and gain insights into what the past occupants of Waitomo went through to discover the cave, in a time before torches and electricity. W hen you hear a name like Waitomo Glowworm Caves, how can you not be interested? It sounds too good to be true, but it’s real. The Waitomo caves, at least most of them, are filled with beautiful lights as a result of hundreds of glowworms living in the dark.

If you want to learn more about these caves, how to visit them, and what to expect when you go, keep reading below.

Where Are the Waitomo Glowworm Caves?

The Waitomo Caves are located in Waitomo. This is on the North Island of New Zealand . The name comes from the Maori people, with wai meaning water and tomo meaning hole or shaft.

Depending on how you plan to travel, it’s not terribly far from Auckland, New Zealand. It’s about three-and-a-half hours by bus, or two-and-a-half hours by car.

What Are the Waitomo Caves?

A total of three caves make up this attraction. These are the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Ruakuri Cave, and Aranui Cave. Each cave is a little different.

The Aranui cave is dry and doesn’t have any glowworms. However, the sparkling stones and multi-colored stalactites and stalagmites are sure to leave behind an impression.

Then there is the Ruakuri Cave. This is the largest cave in the area, big enough to easily be wheelchair accessible. There’s a mix of limestone formations and stunning crystals. Part of the cave has water in it, allowing you a close look at the glowworms.

Finally, there is the most popular cave. This is the Glowworm Caves. You’ll get to walk around some of the larger caves. Then, you’ll get to take a boat through an area filled with glowworms. You and the rest of the people on the tour get to watch the glowworms and their lights reflecting off of the cave walls in silence.

Check out a couple of different tour options. Some places offer a visit to multiple caves or even other places nearby for one decent price. There are a few other attractions around the area, so it’s best to take advantage and see as many of them as you can while you’re in the area.

Life in the Waitomo Caves

Despite being a popular cave, you can find quite a bit of wildlife in the caves. Most of them are insects, such as giant crickets and albino cave ants. The giant crickets are known as Weta , and they are actually quite large, though thankfully flightless. They’re about the size of a pocket lighter and are some of the heaviest insects in the world.

There is also a wide range of fungi that make its home on the walls of the cave. One such example is a fungus known as cave flower, distantly related to Pleurotus .

However, the most popular species in the cave is the glowworm that the cave is named after. The glowworm is Arachnocampa luminosa , which roughly means “glowing spider-worm.”

Their common name is simply glowworm, but they are sometimes referred to as New Zealand Gloworm because they are endemic to the country. In the Māori language, they are known as Titiwai , which refers to the glowing light they project into the water.

These glowworms seen in the cave make up the larval and imago stages. In both of these stages, the glowworm emits blue-green bioluminescence . They turn into a type of gnat when fully grown.

In addition to being found in the Waitomo Caves, they are found in some botanical gardens in the area, such as Wellington Botanical Gardens.

Because of the heavy foot traffic due to visitors, there aren’t many other animals in the cave.

Other Things to Do in the Area

If you want a little adrenaline after that serene sight, there’s the perfect place nearby. Go black water rafting is the ultimate adventure. You get to go tubing in the dark caves, jump off of waterfalls, and see glowworms. Still not enough? There are also options for ziplining through the dark caves, going caving, and climbing up waterfalls.

If you want to see more animals, the Kiwi House in Otorohanga is only about a 15-minute drive from Waitomo. It houses all sorts of native birds including the grey teal, tui, kea, North Island kaka, little spotted kiwi , and New Zealand falcon.

There’s also the Timber Trail , which is roughly a 20-minute drive from Waitomo. The area offers 54 miles of trails that wander through an ancient forest. Depending on what trail you take, you may even find a few bridges to cross. With so many miles of trails, you could easily spend a week just in the park. There are also plenty of bike trails in the park if you’re looking for more than a walk.

3.        Pirongia - After passing through rich countryside and learning about some local history and the New Zealand Land Wars we stop in this idyllic little town for a quick coffee break.

4.        Otorohanga - Continuing our adventure we enter Otorohanga “The Kiwiana capital of New Zealand”. See all things Kiwi as you pass through this unique and charming town.

5.        Waitomo Caves – Arriving at our first feature attraction you will be guided through the ancient and amazing caves seeing many different cave formations including Stalactites, Stalagmites and Lime Columns before descending even further underground for your Glowworm experience. Board your glow-worm boat for a cruise on the grotto river with thousands of Glowworms sparkling above you. 6.        Big Bird – On our way to our next destination, Rotorua, we stop outside Big Bird to see and meet some of our local friendly animals.
