Maybe you would like to blend in a cultural or outdoor destination such as Atacama, Easter Island , or Patagonia? Chile is very well connected with short flights, so let us suggest an itinerary and deal with the logistics.

Your First Night in Santiago

You have been picked up by us at the airport, driven to, and checked into your comfy hotel, enjoyed a hot shower, and you are now ready for a drink and to have something to eat. Sound about right?

One of the great places we use for our introductory wine tasting in Santiago

So early evening we will swing by to take you to your introductory tasting. We work with a number of wine bars and “vinotecas” which are perfect for enjoying your first taste of Chilean wine on native soil. Your wine guide will take you through a flight of regional highlights with some local cheese and bread. We may choose an ancient bush vine Carignan from Itata, a tree-climbing Pais from Maule or a high altitude Carmenere from Aconcagua. You will enjoy 4 or 5 wines that differ in a number of ways and guide you through the geography and terroir that they express.

After the tasting, if you want to continue drinking at the same place or move on then that we can do. There are a large number of eating and drinking options nearby. Tired? If so we will walk back with you and bid you goodnight at your hotel.

These two very senior clients were a real delight to spend time with at Cousiño Macul

Next Morning – Historic vs. Cutting Edge

Today we start our exploration of Chilean winery contrasts. Firstly we will take you for a tour and tasting at an iconic Santiago winery that is a national treasure, Cousiño Macul. Later you will enjoy a great lunch, then tour and taste at the high-tech, modern architectural marvel that is Haras de Pirque. Along the way, we will add another visit to add extra interest and fun to your day, which will remain a surprise for now.

The Cousiño Macul winery was founded in 1856 and obviously at that time it did not lie within urban Santiago, now it does. When we arrive we will enjoy a morning glass of wine to get our motors running and then it’s off to have a look at some of the vineyards.

The days of old school advertising for Cousiño Macul

After getting close up and personal with the all-important plants themselves, we will have a tour around some of the original buildings and equipment, some production areas, and of course the historic underground cellars. Along the way, we will try a couple more wines and at the end of the walkabout, we will taste a further 2 or 3 more premium wines in the comfort of the historic patio with a little bread and cheese to keep us fueled.

Onward we go, back to the vehicle and driving out into the nearby countryside for around 40 minutes. There are a number of options we can opt for en-route and the beauty of a private tour is we can adapt to your interests.

Add a glass of wine to this view and you have paradise!

Arriving at the impressive Haras de Pirque we will have lunch in the lovely restaurant first, as you will probably be hungry at this stage, and then enjoy a tour and tasting of this Antinori property. The rest of our afternoon is spent here with some time to simply relax and sip with the view you see above before we head back into the city and drop you at your hotel.

Gary shot the drone footage below when he wasn’t as good at flying and filming as he is now (he is still not great he admits!), but you can see how Haras de Pirque is a really spectacular winery. We can personally confirm that it’s a real treat to spend time lunching, sipping, and wandering around here.

Second Morning – Large scale vs. Boutique

Today we venture into the nearby countryside and show you an interesting contrast in scale and history. We will be enjoying the historic powerhouse of Viña Santa Rita first. The vineyards you will see to the left as we drive in are shared with Viña Carmen, a sister winery and the oldest in Chile. Viña Carmen is not only Chiles’s first winery (founded in 1850) but these vineyards are the place where Carmenere was “re-discovered” in 1994.

Santa Rita came into being in 1880 so it too is steeped in winemaking history. The beauty here is that unlike Carmen, you can actually visit Santa Rita, and what a great visit it is.

Unusual transport at the lovely Santa Rita winery

Upon arrival, some 60 minutes after leaving your hotel, we will tour the production facility, some of the original buildings, the underground cellars plus enjoy a tasting of course. Something unusual in a winery is an Andean Museum, Santa Rita has one which we can visit if you are interested. The on-site hotel in its own private park is quite a place, we can arrange a quick look round but be warned, you might want to stay.

To be fair you could spend hours at this winery, there is a cafe in the original winery bakery with one of the original train carriages inside! There is a great wine store in a wing of the old hacienda which also houses an excellent restaurant. So you can see how the time could just disappear. BUT we do need to move on to the boutique winery visit, where we will have lunch.

Lunch with the owners and winemakers at LOF winery near Santiago

The LOF winery is a recent family venture and their small estate vineyards were planted with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in 2008. Just 900 bottles were produced in the first vintage. Each year this number has increased and the aim is to produce 6,000 bottles of each variety.

We will have lunch at the family home when we arrive, trying their two wines while we chat, as you can see above. The experience is very intimate and it is a real pleasure to spend time with these lovely people. After we have eaten we will tour the brand new facility and the surrounding vines and see how they do it.

At some point, although we know you won’t want to leave, we need to get you back to your Santiago hotel. In our experience, most of the way back will be spent asleep!

Santiago wine tours:Private tours, luxury stays and incredible experiences

Chile is a natural paradise bearing a bounty of local produce that supplies international marketplaces, while its wines are among the finest in South America and feature on wine lists around the world.

Although vineyards have been grown in Chile for centuries, it wasn’t until respected wineries from France and the US invested in the region during the 1990s to exploit the country’s special environmental conditions that the wine industry really bloomed.

Chile’s recognition on the international stage, where its Cabernet Sauvignon blends in particular, are highly regarded, has increased the country’s popularity with wine tourists – seeking to not only enjoy the vineyards but the remote beauty of the country itself.

The Chile wine regions can be divided into north, central and south – with most vineyards clustered in the central region. Vineyards here are cooled by Pacific Ocean winds to create full-bodied Californian style reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes – while Carmenere, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc can also be found.

Fortunately, this region is close to the country’s capital city and Santiago wine tours can take visitors to some of the oldest wineries in Chile to four distinct central regions that are within easy reach. Here are some regions Chile wine tours from Santiago can visit:

The most travelled wine tours from Santiago Chile take visitors to the Maipo Valley , the country’s leading wine region that is responsible for most exports, especially the trademark Cabernet Sauvignon blends.

The Rapel region in the Colchagua Province is where you will find some of the world’s most revered single varietal Carménère as well as well-aged Bordeaux-style blends with rich flavours.

Wine tours Santiago Chile may also take visitors to the Curico region, which produces both red and white varieties, although it is widely acclaimed for its Chardonnay.

The Maule Valley remains largely dedicated to vineyards of the local Pais grape – once the most planted grape in Chile but now demoted to be used as a jug wine – although new styles are gradually staking a claim.

Our local expert can organise a wine tour from Santiago to any of these regions and beyond. Our tours, which include vineyard visits, elaborate tastings, luxury accommodations and other unique experiences, can be tailormade to meet your specific requirements – ensuring every detail is taken care of before you arrive.

Our Santiago Chile wine tours include The Best of Chile’s Central Valley, which takes visitors down the Pan American Highway towards the Colchagua Valley for a night’s stay at the elegant NOI Blend Hotel.

This is followed by a bike and wine tour Santiago that takes in several exclusive wineries across the San Antonio and Casablanca Valleys while also stopping at some memorable spots along the way including the colourful village of Lo Abarca and the historic port of Valparaiso .

Visitors inclined towards outdoor activities can hike through the breathtaking natural retreat of Cajon del Maipo before returning to Santiago.

Alternatively, our Santiago Chile wine tours also include heading to the Maule Valley to visit  five of the region’s most renowned wineries, including Casa Silva, Gillmore Winery and Vineyards, Nouchon Family Vineyards, Caliboro Reserve Winery and Altair.

The best time of year to take wine tours in Chile from Santiago is from October to February when the vines are green and growing, or during the harvest season between March and May.

Chilean Wine Country: Sip, Savor, And Explore

  • The Colchagua Valley, Maipo Valley, and Elqui Valley are renowned wine regions in Chile, known for producing excellent red wines such as Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Maipo Valley is considered the top wine region in Chile, producing high-quality wines and being easily accessible from Santiago.
  • The best time to visit Chilean wine country is from late February to April, when vineyards are in full swing and actively producing and selling wine. Chile's year-round Mediterranean-style climate makes it a great destination for wine lovers.

Chilean wine regions have become a notable part of the global wine scene. The Colchagua Valley, famous for its excellent red wines like Carmenere, and the Maipo Valley, known for exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, stand out. The Elqui Valley, recognized for clear skies and quality Syrah, is also gaining attention for its unique cool-climate wines. These regions are crucial to Chile's impressive wine production.

The history of Chilean wine dates back to Spanish explorers who brought grapevines to the region. Nowadays, around 90% of Chilean wine is produced near the city of Chillán. But there's more than just wine here; a significant amount is also used to make Pisco, the national drink.

One famous name is Concha y Toro, founded in 1883 and now a major player in Latin American wines, available in over 140 countries. If you're interested in great wine and exploring beautiful vineyards, Chile's wine country is worth checking out. That's only one of the many reasons Chile should be added to your travel bucket list .

Where Is Wine Country In Chile?

  • The Colchagua Valley, Maipo Valley, and Elqui Valley are best for wine tasting in Chile.
  • Some vineyards are within a short drive of Santiago, Chile.

With Chile being such a vast land with countless natural treasures , finding the perfect region for drinking wine can be tricky. There are a few good ones to recommend, including north and south of the capital, between Valparaíso and the Millahue Valley. Just 50 miles northwest of Santiago, tourists can find the Casablanca Valley, a perfect choice for wineries and tastings.

Luckily, the entire countryside is filled with grape vines, situated not too far from larger cities. That could make for a nice day trip from somewhere like Santiago, especially if your travel group has rented a vehicle.

On top of that, the Colchagua Valley, Maipo Valley, and Elqui Valley are renowned for producing red wines, which have become popular worldwide over the years.

These are the reds people will see on local and even international wine menus, making these various regions the best for tasting red wine. This is also referred to as Carmenere, which is a unique wine that comes from the country.

Need a break from wine tastings? Exploring Patagonia in Chile is well worth the road trip.

What Is The Top Wine Region In Chile?

  • Maipo Valley is often regarded as the top wine region in Chile.
  • Located close to Santiago, Maipo Valley is a popular destination among locals and tourists.

When it comes to the top wine region in Chile, this has become Maipo Valley over the years. With locals and tourists agreeing that the Maipo Valley area produces the highest-quality wine, it's a must-visit while on a wine tour.

Notably, it's Chile's largest commercial wine-growing region. The Maipo Valley accounts for a large percentage of their export market with brands like Concha y Toro.

After all, it's one of the closer options for staying in historic Santiago , making Maipo Valley easy to access via car or even cab. Visitors can explore countless wineries and enjoy the untouched nature surrounding many of the properties.

This country is stunning, boasting preserved land, wildlife, and experiences one could only have in Chile.

However, there are some honorable mentions for wine in Chile:

  • Rapel Valley - Where guests can discover some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
  • Curicó Valley - One of the most essential Chilean wine regions that played a significant role in paving the way for the expansion of winemaking in other regions.
  • Maule Valley - One of the Largest Chilean wine regions, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards as well as a small quantity of Malbec and Carignan

These hotels offer some of the best prices in Chile , many of which are in or near Santiago.

What's The Best Time Of Year To Visit Chilean Wine Country?

  • When To Visit: From late February to April

Regarding the best time of the year to visit Chilean wine country, this typically falls between February and April in the countryside, as the vineyards are in full swing, with workers putting together barrels to store and bringing out ready-to-sell and taste wine for guests.

What's nice is that Chile's wine region can be visited most of the year due to a year-round Mediterranean-style climate, meaning any vacationer should be able to witness actively growing grapes during their tour.

Unlike Napa, where there are 'off' seasons for wine growing and preparing, Chile has a climate that works in its favor nearly 365 days each year. That in itself makes the country perfect for wine (and those who want to drink it or even ship some home). Have fun!

How to avoid being targeted as an American tourist

Travel troubleshooter.

If it feels like you have a target on your back when you’re traveling, you might be right. Tourists are being profiled like never before.

Sometimes, it’s harmless. For example, I recently walked into a cafe in Rio de Janeiro. Before I could say “bom dia,” a server handed me two menus — in English.

How did she know? No matter how hard I try, I look like an American tourist , and when I walk into a restaurant, I smile like an American tourist . So, of course, I get the English menu.

But sometimes, the profiling is deadly. If you’re pegged as a tourist in Colombia, you could get drugged, robbed and even killed. The U.S. State Department has issued a warning that numerous U.S. citizens have fallen victim to dating scams that can end with them getting seriously hurt — or worse.

“U.S. citizens should definitely use caution while traveling and try their best not to stick out or be profiled as American while abroad,” says John Gobbels, chief operating officer of Medjet , an air medical transport program for travelers.

No one keeps statistics on the number of foreign tourists profiled or killed abroad. But based on the number of new State Department warnings and some of the stories I’ve been hearing from international travelers, the problem has never been worse.

Although most profiling is just irritating — a hard sell of souvenirs or tip-baiting, for example — some of it can be hazardous to your health. But there are things you can do to avoid being targeted. I’ll tell you how in a minute.

More Travel Troubleshooter

Most profiling is not dangerous — it’s just annoying.

Reality check: Most tourist profiling is harmless and should come as no surprise to the average traveler.

Ellie Blake was on a tour of Japan with her college alumni association when she began to feel the pressure to buy things.

“For example, our tour guide took us to a museum shop,” she says. “It was a very long stop compared to other sites we visited.”

Along the way, the people they met would ask them, “What did you buy?,” almost as if they were egging them on to purchase more souvenirs.

Blake believes the tour guides added these shopping breaks because they pegged their group as affluent Americans. It’s something I’ve seen recently in Japan, too. I was on a coastal cruise last summer, and our land tours always seemed to end at a business that sold pricey art.

The solution: Resist the temptation. Better yet, choose a tour where they put the attractions — not the shopping — first. (If you’re on a guided tour, always ask about the shopping opportunities. If there are too many, you may want to select another tour.)

Sometimes, the profiling is scary

You can’t always walk away. Consider what happened to Ariel Figg recently when she booked a last-minute tour in the Dominican Republic.

One day, the guides detoured to a village, where they took Figg to a gift store filled with trinkets and pressured her to buy local artwork. She refused.

At the end, she offered the guides a generous tip . “They counted the money in front of us, scoffed at our faces, and told us that, as Americans, we should pay more because we can afford it,” she says.

Figg says she should have known better. After all, she’s a travel coach , and before taking a last-minute tour, she would have told her clients to research the tour operator carefully.

I had a similarly awkward moment in Santiago, Chile, recently. After having lunch at a small vegetarian restaurant, I stood up to pay. The server brought over a mobile point-of-sale system. She asked me to enter a tip amount in front of her and then tap my card to pay. There was no apparent option for “no tip.”

Figg is right — avoiding this more forceful kind of profiling is easy if you do your homework. I learned my lesson about restaurant tipping in Chile and ordered takeout after that. And Figg will never take a last-minute tour again without doing her homework.

Profiling can also turn deadly

“Americans have been targeted overseas by criminals and sometimes by dishonest businesses, simply for being Americans,” explains Michael O’Rourke, CEO of Advanced Operational Concepts , a security consulting firm.

Why? He says thanks to Hollywood, people in many foreign countries perceive that all Americans are rich. The perception has some validity when compared to income levels and the standard of living in developing nations.

Most Read Life Stories

  • Mount Rainier National Park rolls out summer reservation system
  • At 5 new Seattle bars, find cocktails, natural wine and good food
  • Rant & Rave: Reader reunited with newly adopted dog
  • The Wildrose, Seattle’s only lesbian bar, toasts 40 years
  • The most delicious way to make wild salmon

Fortunately, the profiling rarely leads to death. But experts like O’Rourke warn that in some parts of the world, people are desperate enough to use force against a visitor. And especially at a time when Americans are going to far-flung places, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings.

I’ve never been attacked because of my nationality, but I’ve been followed. I remember being in an ancient village in a remote part of Turkey a few years ago. I turned a corner and was face-to-face with a group of young men hanging out and smoking. They looked at me and said, “American! HI!” and then started to follow me.

I wasn’t sure what they wanted and didn’t want to find out, so I turned around and walked back toward the town square — and safety.

But maybe I should have stayed.

“Profiling is not always negative,” says Thomas Swick, author of the memoir “Falling into Place: A Story of Love, Poland, and the Making of a Travel Writer.”

Swick remembers visiting Vietnam in the early 1990s. Students would approach him and ask if he was American.

“When I told them I was, they politely asked if they could practice their English. Then we’d go off to a cafe for an hour of conversation, which was as beneficial to me as a travel writer as it was to them,” he recalls.

He makes a valid point. Being recognized as an American when you’re abroad can make your next trip more interesting — as long as you’re being recognized for the right reasons.

Elliott’s tips for avoiding profiling

If you’re traveling abroad, here are a few strategies to avoid being profiled as an American.

Avoid wearing USA T-shirts and American sports jerseys. And since this is an election year, I have to say it: No MAGA caps or shirts, please. You could be putting yourself in danger. Wear muted colors and avoid sweatshirts with hoodies, and you will at least keep them guessing.

Mind your manners

Kitty Werner, a former airline reservation agent who has lived overseas, says nothing gives away your nationality faster than your etiquette — or lack of etiquette. That’s true in Europe, but in places like the Middle East or Japan, your casual attire screams “American!” “You can tell an American tourist immediately by their manners,” she says.

“Many tourists are too loud,” says Harding Bush, associate director of security for Global Rescue . “Be mindful of your volume and avoid drawing attention to yourself.” Your noise level is a dead giveaway and may also mark you as an American tourist.

Parque Pierre Dubois

wine tours in santiago chile

Cerro Loma Larga

wine tours in santiago chile

wine tours in santiago chile

wine tours in santiago chile

wine tours in santiago chile

¿Nunca lo has visitado?

Bosque Santiago

wine tours in santiago chile

wine tours in santiago chile

wine tours in santiago chile

Parque Mahuidahue

wine tours in santiago chile
