Virtual Tours of Zoos

Hey everyone and welcome back to another Momentum 360 blog! In this week’s blog, we are going to be taking a look at some virtual tours of zoos around the world. Right now is the perfect time to be taking advantage of virtual tours of zoos, not only because of visitor restrictions due to the Coronavirus but also because the weather is getting colder as we move closer to winter.

In today’s blog, we’re going to talk about the benefits of virtual tours in zoos and we’re going to be highlighting a couple of awesome zoos and animal habitats available to see online. These exhibits are perfect for animal lovers of all ages and are the perfect way to learn about animals you don’t see every day. Check it out!

Benefits of Virtual Tours of Zoos

Let’s be honest, nothing in the world has been completely normal for months now. We’re all learning to live with our new normal as best as we can. One of my favorite activities as a kid was going to the zoo in the summer and seeing the coolest animals in the world. When the virus shut everything down, zoos were forced to close to the public to ensure the safety of the zoologists and the animals they care for.

In a time where everyone was stuck at home trying to figure out how to keep themselves and their children entertained and learning, people turned to exciting educational opportunities they could access online.

Now, doing a virtual tour of a zoo isn’t the same as a museum’s virtual tour. In a museum, exhibitions are mostly stagnant and can be captured in a photograph. In a zoo, however, the main attraction is the animals who are living, breathing, and moving creatures. You can’t capture the majesticness of a lion in a photograph.

So how do these virtual tours work? Well, a combination of virtual reality, live cams, and 360 technology.

The live cams are pretty self-explanatory, a camera is set up on a specific enclosure and sends a live stream to the zoo’s website. People can log on at any time and from anywhere to see what’s going on in that enclosure. These are very popular for when an animal is about to give birth.

360 technology and virtual reality are used to simulate an in-person visit to the zoo, with renderings of the attractions to make you feel like you are actually there.

Online Virtual Tours of Zoos

Paignton zoo.

This UK Zoo has one of the most comprehensive zoo virtual tours. Paignton has a 360 aerial view tour of eight areas of their zoo. In this tour, visitors can learn about species of different animals while actually seeing what they look like in their enclosures. Some of these include crocodiles, lions, giraffes, and more!

In addition to this virtual tour, Paignton Zoo also has live cams set up for their flamingos, meerkats, and the Sulawesi Crested Macaque.

National Aquarium

The National Aquarium is an exhibit we have highlighted before in our “ Educational 3D Tours ” blog. This Baltimore-based aquarium is home to over 20,000 animals, including over 800 species. When you think aquarium, chances are you think of tropical fish, sharks, and turtles. While the National Aquarium has all these, they also have animals like birds, amphibians, and even mammals. All the animals housed in the National Aquarium have a unique connection to water, even if you wouldn’t think of them as fitting in an aquarium.

In this virtual tour, users can explore different areas like the Tropical Rainforest, the Atlantic Coral Reef, the Amazon Rainforest, and so much more! Overview and History

Moscow takes its name from the Moskva river, where Slavic settlements began around 500AD. They adopted Christianity from the Byzantine Empire in 988 A.D., and it would last as the national religion for a thousand years.

By the 15th cent. Moscow had become the capitol of the Russian state under the Grand Duchy of Moscow, which had been busily assimilating smaller feudal territories while battling the Golden Horde of Mongols. The city was raided and burnt down by the Tatar-Mongols at least three times.

Consolidation of many smaller territories under Moscow's power set the stage for Ivan III to adopt the title of "Ruler of all of Russia." His son Ivan IV, or "Ivan the Terrible", become the first crowned Tsar of Russia.

The succession of Tsars lasted from Ivan IV until Peter the Great, who proclaimed the Russian Empire in 1721, with St. Petersburg for its capitol.

The Russian Empire survived the "Times of Troubles" which saw chaos, invasion and several uprisings of the people. Napolean Bonaparte came within 25 miles of capturing Moscow during his disastrous invasion of 1812, but was turned back after thousands of his starving troops were ambushed and killed by peasant guerilla fighters.

By the beginning of the 20th Century, Moscow was capitol, this time of the largest country in the world.

The Industrial Revolution came later to Russia than to Western Europe, partly due to Russia's institute of serfdom which kept peasants bound to the land. Soon enough however, the emergence of the Socialist political movement was loudly advocating total revolution, and by 1917 the Soviet Union replaced the Tsar and his autocratic rule. This began the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), which lasted until 1991.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moscow continues to be the capital of Russia, or the Russian Federation as it is now known. It is still the largest single country in the world.

People and Culture

Moscow is in the grips of a western renovation, with consumerism and ostentatious displays of wealth parading everywhere. As of 2008 it is the city with the most expensive cost of living in the world, home of the most billionaires, as well as being the largest city in Europe.

Getting There

Moscow is laid out in five major sections in concentric pattern, with the Kremlin smack in the middle. The Kremlin is the administrative seat of power, and its name means "fortress." Its walls delineate the 15th century boundaries of the city.

Transportation

You can find information about getting to and from the airports here .

Click here for some great tips about the fantastic metro system

Here is some more useful overview stuff about the metro, trams, trolleys etc.

Things to do

There are many galleries and museums in moscow but here are two favorites:

First is Modern Art Museum . and second is Winzavod - it means wine factory

In addition to these, you can visit the Museum of Geology, Museum of Aviation and Astronautics, Museum of History of Moscow.

For art lovers, try the State Tretiyakovskaya Gallerry - with a huge collection of Russian art and icons - one of the most famous russian museum after the State Hermitage in St.Petersburg.

There's also a beautiful Zoo, comparing to others in russia..

As for restaurants and clubs there's nice cafe just near the red squre - F.A.Q. Cafe - if you can read russian.

There's an old good club 'Propaganda' - it's almost 10 years but still one of the best places to go out every night! Others which are not bad are:

Recommendations

What to look for in general: Red Square, the Kremlin, the Lenin Mausoleum, the Cathedral of St. Basil, and Bely Gorod which is a shopping district.

One more beautiful old place to see in Moscow is - Novodevichiy monastery (was built in 1524 and Ivan IV became a czar there).

A good place to visit for outdoor activities is also Vorob'evi Gori (hills) - it's kind of recreation zone on the moskva river with a park and Moscow state university's main huge soviet building on the top.

Another thing you can do is go for a walk down Old Arbat, a pedestrian street with ethnic flavour of Soviet times and buildings from the time of the Russian Empire.

Creating a high-quality 360 virtual tour starts with the right camera. There are several types of cameras used to capture 360-degree images, each with its own set of features and capabilities.

  • Single-Lens Cameras: These cameras have a single wide-angle lens that captures a large field of view. They are generally more affordable and easier to use but may require more post-processing to stitch images together. Examples include the Ricoh Theta series and the Insta360 One X2.
  • Dual-Lens Cameras: These cameras feature two wide-angle lenses positioned back-to-back, allowing them to capture a full 360-degree view in a single shot. They are popular for their simplicity and high-quality output. Notable models include the GoPro Max and the Garmin VIRB 360.
  • Multi-Lens Cameras: For professional-grade 360 virtual tours, multi-lens cameras are often used. These cameras have multiple lenses (usually four or more) that capture high-resolution images from different angles simultaneously. The images are then stitched together to create a seamless 360-degree view. Examples include the Insta360 Pro 2 and the Vuze XR.

Essential Accessories

To capture the best possible 360-degree images, certain accessories are essential. These accessories help stabilize the camera, ensure proper lighting, and facilitate the image stitching process.

  • Tripods and Monopods: Stability is crucial when capturing 360-degree images. A sturdy tripod or monopod ensures that the camera remains steady, resulting in clear and sharp images. Some tripods come with specialized mounts for 360 cameras.
  • Lighting Equipment: Proper lighting can make a significant difference in the quality of 360 images. Portable LED lights or light panels can be used to illuminate the environment evenly, reducing shadows and enhancing image clarity.
  • Remote Shutters: Remote shutters allow photographers to capture images without touching the camera, minimizing the risk of camera shake. Some 360 cameras come with built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling remote control via a smartphone app.
  • Stitching Software: While not a physical accessory, stitching software is essential for creating seamless 360-degree images. This software aligns and blends the images captured by the camera’s lenses, producing a single, cohesive panorama.

Software and Tools

Popular software for creating 360 virtual tours.

Once the images are captured, the next step is to use software to create and enhance the 360 virtual tour. Several software options are available, each offering a range of features to cater to different needs and skill levels.

  • Pano2VR: Pano2VR is a powerful software for creating 360 virtual tours. It offers a range of features, including image stitching, hotspot creation, and virtual reality (VR) integration. Pano2VR also supports custom skins and templates, allowing users to personalize their tours.
  • Kolor Panotour: Kolor Panotour is another popular choice for creating 360 virtual tours. It provides an intuitive interface and a wide range of features, including support for interactive maps, audio, and video integration. Kolor Panotour also offers a variety of plugins to enhance the functionality of virtual tours.
  • 3DVista Virtual Tour: 3DVista Virtual Tour is known for its user-friendly interface and extensive feature set. It supports 360-degree video, VR, and augmented reality (AR) integration. 3DVista also offers advanced features such as live panoramas and adaptive HDR for improved image quality.
  • Matterport: Matterport is a leading platform for creating 3D and 360 virtual tours. It combines hardware and software to offer a comprehensive solution for capturing and creating immersive virtual tours. Matterport’s cloud-based platform provides tools for editing, sharing, and embedding virtual tours.

Editing and Enhancing 360 Virtual Tours

Creating a 360 virtual tour involves more than just stitching images together. Editing and enhancing the tour can significantly improve the user experience and make the tour more engaging. Here are some key aspects of the editing process:

  • Image Stitching: The first step in creating a seamless 360 virtual tour is stitching the individual images together. This process involves aligning the images and blending the edges to create a single, continuous panorama. Most 360 cameras come with built-in stitching software, but dedicated software like PTGui or Autopano Giga can provide more advanced features and better control over the stitching process.
  • Hotspot Creation: Hotspots are interactive elements within a virtual tour that provide additional information or navigation options. They can be used to link different scenes, display text or images, or play audio and video. Creating and placing hotspots effectively can enhance the interactivity of the tour and provide users with valuable information.
  • Image Enhancement: Enhancing the quality of the images is crucial for creating a professional-looking virtual tour. This can involve adjusting the brightness, contrast, and saturation, correcting color balance, and sharpening the images. Software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom can be used for advanced image editing and enhancement.
  • Adding Multimedia Elements: To create a more immersive experience, multimedia elements such as audio, video, and animations can be added to the virtual tour. For example, background music or narration can guide users through the tour, while embedded videos can provide additional context or information about specific locations or features.
  • VR and AR Integration: Integrating virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) elements can take a 360 virtual tour to the next level. VR headsets allow users to experience the tour in an immersive, 3D environment, while AR can overlay digital information onto the real-world view. Software like Unity or Unreal Engine can be used to create and integrate VR and AR elements into a virtual tour.
  • User Interface Customization: Customizing the user interface (UI) of a virtual tour can enhance the user experience and make the tour more visually appealing. This can include designing custom navigation menus, adding branded elements, and creating interactive maps or floor plans. Tools like Pano2VR and 3DVista offer extensive UI customization options.
