That said, we find it disappointing that the company offers tours to only four Asian countries (the region is much more than Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea, after all!).

A few clients also mentioned that the agency failed to inform them of itinerary changes ahead of time. 

One client knew of the change only a few days before her travel date. The update was minor, but it still frustrated her, as she expected the company to deliver such information to its customers promptly.

Moreover, the agency constantly expands its reach, which seasoned travelers love. Returning clients said the company updating its destination list is one of the reasons they chose to stick with it for years. 

Many also appreciate the travel package variety. Clients can choose among group tours, free and easy holidays, and private trips.

Budget travelers said they prefer group tours, as they’re cheaper. 

Meanwhile, young and energetic jet-setters with money to spare said they love the free-and-easy holiday packages, as the setup allows for more leisurely explorations.

That said, a few customers mentioned they had gripes with the agency’s choice of hotels. 

One client shared that his Japan trip was not 100% satisfying, as he had to stay in two visibly run-down hotels, which were also slightly far from attractions.

Clients who don’t want to experience the same disappointment might want to try the agency’s private tours. But, as the package type is customizable, it will be pricier.

We also received reports that some clients who booked private tours experienced communication hiccups. 

One client who booked a private Bhutan tour said he had to follow up with the agency for information about pre-travel briefings and other concerns but had trouble reaching the company.

He later learned that the people who booked group tours had attended a briefing already and that his travel coordinator had failed to inform him. He and his family had to go to the office later for a rather rushed briefing instead. 

We think such communication issues are due to Chan Brothers’ many clients and extensive packages. Still, the agency should work to improve its customer service to retain its clients.

Another customer said she picked Fayyaz due to its extensive list of Southeast Asia destinations (12 countries) and Middle East destinations (7 countries). She had always wanted to explore the said regions, making the agency a convenient choice.

She also mentioned that Fayyaz assists with visa processing, which is a big plus in her book.

Meanwhile, one client shared that he called the company to ask if the team could whip up a plan for his travel budget (he didn’t disclose the price, though). 

He said the customer desk accommodated his query and got back to him with a suggested itinerary a few days later.

We think it’s impressive that you can name your price for this agency! That said, we recommend searching for average travel costs for your destination to keep your expectations realistic.

It’s only disappointing that Fayyaz has a limited number of packages for multi-country tours, unlike other agencies with a plethora of world-hopping opportunities.

Moreover, the agency’s prices are relatively high, so only engage them if you have saved enough for a bespoke travel package.

However, the agency might need to work on its communications, especially when dealing with customer refunds.

A customer told us that he had to wait up to six months before he could receive his refund following a tour cancellation due to bad weather.

We also think the company is best for newbie travelers, as its packages feature only the most popular destinations in Asia and Europe (think: Japan, Maldives, France, and Italy).

If you prefer less-traveled destinations, an agency with a broader reach will be a better option.

Thankfully, travel packages for families with slightly lower fees are available.

However, the leisurely pace of the tours might not be preferable to travelers who are more into sightseeing and taking photos of iconic locations. 

Mainstream travel agencies’ packed schedules and popular highlights may be the better option for such clients.

In most cases, using a travel agent costs roughly the same as handling the travel transactions yourself. That’s because travel agencies charge minimal fees for their services (usually itinerary planning services). The rest of your payment goes to airlines, accommodations, and other experiences you need to pay for the trip. You could only say that using a travel agent is expensive if you prefer to get the cheapest airline tickets from online booking sites. Travel agencies don’t have the freedom to offer that much flying discount. 

It is wise to use a travel agent if you don’t like planning your trips or booking your flight and accommodations yourself. Your travel agency will do all these things for you, which is convenient. We would like to compliment one of the tour leader from SA tour - Rachel - the tour leader for the Europe Trip. Rachel has been very professional and helpful and knowledgeable and her flexibility to adjust the itinerary has reduce a lot of waiting and travelling time for us. The itinerary was well paced with nature and city scene. There is never a perfect itinerary that suits all of us but I personally feel that a tour leader plays a important part in ensuring we had a enjoyable trip and we are indeed blessed to have Rachel and the group we travelling with to make our trip a very enjoyable one. There was some unpleasant experience I had with one of the SA colleague which commented that I was being unfair to him in a email that was sent to my friend. I would like to thank Miss Winnie Woo for her help in planning a wedding proposal on our Dream Cruise holiday from 11-16 Feb 2018. Hi, My parents and I have joined SA Tour's 14D European Treasure Trove (EETT14) from 3-16 Dec 2022. We are very grateful to Cyril for all the assistance that he rendered to my family and me throughout the trip. My parents are elderly (age 67 and 72) and compared to other tour members, needed more time to walk and help with luggage. At Jungfraujoch, I was impressed that Cyril prepared sweets and ginger to help all tour members gain the energy to adjust to the high-altitude effect as well as reminded us regularly to walk slowly and be careful of the slippery surfaces. Cyril's care and concern for the safety and comfort each member has been prevalent throughout the tour. At each hotel, Cyril has done his best to accommodate needs of the families travelling together (swapping rooms where necessary) and helped everyone with our heavy luggage such that any inconveniences were kept to the minimum. My family has been travelling to Europe for several years before Covid so we are familiar with the long distances expected in the itinerary and are cognisant that we will only be staying for a short time in each city. This is my third visit to Italy and my mother's second visit; visiting Sistine Chapel at Vatican City during each trip. Through our description of Sistine Chapel, my father (a devout Christian) was looking forward to visiting it at the Vatican City during this trip to Italy (his first visit). We realised that the visit to Vatican City did not include Sistine Chapel while we were waiting to enter the St Peter's Basilica. My father was distraught and kept saying that he really wanted to visit the Sistine Chapel once in his lifetime and at his age, he may have a chance to return to Italy again. Cyril heard my father saying this and explored with the local tour guide on how we can fulfil my father's wish to visit Sistine Chapel though my mother and I were explaining to my father that we should just continue with the tour itinerary in order not to inconvenience the other tour members. As we are in Rome on 14 and 15 Dec (15 Dec was a free day), it may be possible for my family to return to Vatican City to visit Sistine Chapel on our own on 15 Dec before meeting the tour group at the airport. After discussion with Cyril and the local tour guide, we decided that the best approach would be to skip the next leg of the walking tour in Rome (14 Dec) to Colosseum and go to Sistine Chapel (next to St Peter's Basilica) while we are still in Vatican City. We will catch up with the tour group at Trevi Fountain. As the local guide is with our tour group throughout the walking tour and will take care of the safety of 17 members, Cyril quickly brought the 3 of us to the entrance of Musei Vaticani to get tickets before he ran back in the rain to catch up with the tour group at the Colosseum. We went for a short route to Sistine Chapel and took a taxi to Trevi Fountain to meet the group within 2 hours to continue our walking tour to Spanish Steps. Cyril could have left the 3 of us to locate the entrance of Musei Vaticani on our own (which I offered) and stayed with the 17 members of the tour group and the local guide on the walking tour. Cyril went with us because it was raining the entire day and he was concerned about whether we can locate the entrance in time, particularly with my elderly parents. At the same time, the local guide was with 17 members of the tour group ensuring their safety while Cyril quickly caught up with them; drenched in the process. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to Cyril and the other members of the tour group to fulfil my father's wish. Weighing the options, this approach caused the least inconvenience to the rest of the tour members. It meant a lot to my family that Cyril made the extra effort to fulfil my father's wish to visit Sistine Chapel in his lifetime. My family and I have joined many packaged tours over the past 14 years. We know what a tour leader would typically do in a packaged tour. Cyril has struck us as a tour leader who went above and beyond the typical role of the tour leader and went through hardship (carrying heavy luggage up flights of stairs at hotels) to ensure the safety and comfort of tour members. Dear Sir/ Mdm, Hope this email serves you fine and well. I am a customer of yours for the European 14D European Treasure Trove from 3 Dec 2022 to 16 Dec 2022. I will like to take this opportunity to thank my tour manager Mr Cyril Sheng for the great experience that he has given me and my wife for the honeymoon holiday. Firstly, Mr Cyril Sheng has been very accommodating and very detailed in his daily itinerary planning for the whole trip. There were many requests put up during the trip by many passengers on an adhoc basis. Without any hesitation, he has been in the forefront to take care of all our needs and wants within the time limit. He has paid detailed attention to an elderly couple who wanted to pay their respects in the 16th Chapel whilst he ensured that we are safe in the hands of the local guide. He went the extra mile to reach our next destination on foot after bringing the couple which is admirable. Mr Cyril has also showed the care and concern for all his passengers. Since my wife and I are on a special diet of vegetarian and having fish and eggs, he ensured that we are served the right food at all times. This is an admirable character of his. What touched me was he came over to all his passengers including us to ensure the right food is served. When some of the fellow passengers changed their dietary requirements, he went the extra mile to change without any complaints. This is the star quality that we see in him. In addition, when my wife needed to go to the toilet as she was not feeling well, without much hesitation or complaints, he directed the bus captain to detour to show care and concern. He also checked in twice on the same day to see if she was fine and checked in again the next day. This is something that I have not seen in other tour manager in other agencies. In Switzerland, whilst other tour managers in other groups only brought their passengers up, Mr Cyril has gone the extra mile to buy sweets for passengers to have sugar and go up the mountain. This was on his own accord. He ensured all passenger young and old were fine throughout the journey. When an elderly passenger was not well,he rushed to help her and assisted the family. He also spent his own money to get doughnuts for his passengers. I am also amazed that Mr Cyril Sheng went the additional mile to carry all the luggage for his passengers. He smiled and helped all of us. This is really admirable in him. I hope you would take this opportunity to praise him for his hard work and effort. To the Management of SA Tours, I have just returned from the Hokkaido Package 8 days tour from 11 to 19th of May on the Scoot Flight Package.I would like to mention something today that is on every leisure traveller’s dream to have a pleasant and memorable trip just outside my usual business travels. When we landed in Sapporo , we were greeted with a 60 ?year old tour guide ( Tao yu , BEI ZI ) and my first impression was what can this lady do for the 8 days continuous journey that we are going to embark on while most of the time, I would expect a 30 to 40 years plus tour guide are the usual ones with the appropriate energy to carry us all the way throughout the comprehensive journeys . I saw even at the first meeting she was pretty tired , stunned and wear out. I was literally not expecting any potential exciting tours ahead. After the 8 days , I was totally wronged and what I witnessed was that Bei Zi has brought us the tour group to an exhilarating , entertaining , knowledge riched journey and most importantly with great sense of humour that bombarded us till we are totally impressed with her experience and skills of a well rounded tour guide. Her style of organising the tour schedule was kept detailed and meticulously carried out the proposed events with utmost responsibility to ensure everyone is safe and understood the message she tried to deliver. Never had I and my wife came across such dedicated and professional attitude that she carried with her to ensure that the tour group members broke ice on friendship quickly and allow us to find common ground together through her lively humour and simplistic philological understanding about how we should appreciate our life both by leading simple, happy and a meaningful life. It’s really a 5 stars quality. I would like to also comment on the professionalism displayed by Rachel ( SA ) who has to juggle between 2 travel groups while keeping pace with the tight schedule moving from one hotel to another and it is no joke considering we are changing hotels every day. She brought snacks to ensure that we are in good mood and continue to keep us well informed on the day’s schedule. Her bilingualist ability was able to put into good use. She is very kind, gentle and understanding. Last but not least, another commendable person we would like to thank is Hirasawa San, the perfect and meticulously dressed driver who makes our journey seamlessly safe and given strategically challenging driven coach routes that only experience and passionate driver can execute. The coach is too clean that we felt guilty eating some snacks inside the coach. Many thanks to SA tours, and very lucky to have such great people like BEI ZI , Rachel and Hirasawa San, who I hope will continue to upkeep great standards of tour guided packages offered. Once again, thanks to wonderful people like BEI ZI that makes my holiday so worthwhile not just on beautiful sceneries alone but we certainly make great pleasant friends along this nice and memorable journey. Dear Sir/Mdm I would like to give the following compliment our tour group leader and foreign tour guide for our SA Tour trip to Zhang Jia Jie. My tour leader Richard was very helpful and approachable throughout the trip. He is always staying behind the whole group to ensure that we do not lose our way, or head towards the wrong direction. He helps to look our for the elderlies in our group. He is always prompt to help us when we approach him for certain enquiries, like if there is any place to get food near our hotel etc. He is attentive to details, on the night when we took a train to Guangzhou, we were at the wrong gate. However, Richard was quick to notice the details and guided us to the correct gate, if not we would have missed our train to Guangzhou. I am very grateful and thankful to have him as my guide. Our foreign tour guide, Xiao Hei (Wang Kun) was very knowledgeable with the places we are visiting. He explains and shares interesting stories about the places we visit. He is always waiting at the bus door to help everyone get down the bus, like he held on to our hand as we alighted from the bus. When 2 members from our tour group had no appetite for food as they are not feeling well, Xiao Hei asked the restaurant to prepare green bean soup for the 2 members, and when the restaurant staff explains that the green bean soup was not inclusive in the set that was ordered, he forked out his own money for the green bean soup. Throughout the trip, he always buys oranges and stuffs using his own money to treat us even though he did not need to do so. When a few of my family members were not feeling well, I approached Xiao Hei to ask him to help me order some Yakult and Isotonic water for my family. When the items arrived, he refused to collect the money from me. It is hard to come by tour guides like him. Please acknowledge receipt of my email and convey my compliment to Xiao Hei and his company. Thank you.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”  

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

1. What does travel insurance cover you for?

A good travel insurance policy covers you for a whole series of situations, from the small inconveniences to the most terrible.

Trust me, you never want to be in a situation that you’re not covered for.

It could be a minor inconvenience, like having your luggage delayed and being forced to spend  at least one night in the same clothes you wore on the entire flight. Or it could be a serious medical emergency, like getting stung badly by jellyfish in the middle of a remote island adventure and needing immediate medical attention.

These days, almost all travel insurance in Singapore automatically includes COVID-19 coverage. That means, you’ll be able to claim from your travel insurance if you get Covid-19 while travelling .

You should also have coverage for everything from lost and delayed luggage, flight delays and cancellations, all the way to medical treatment, medical evacuation and even repatriation in case of serious illness and death. All these different situations have different claim limits, of course.

Travel insurance also covers things like reimbursing deposits if your travel agent goes bust, if your credit card is used fraudulently overseas, or if you  damage your rental car . Some policies even pay you if you are kidnapped while overseas!  And the best part is that travel insurance is relatively cheap and convenient to buy.

2. How to choose travel insurance

With so many different benefits in a travel insurance plan, it can be tough to decide if a particular travel insurance plan is worth your money. You should look out for how much you are reimbursed for common travel hiccups.

• Find a travel insurance that covers flight delays and cancellations:  Flight delays happen more often than you realise. They can be extremely inconvenient, especially if it ends up causing you to miss your connecting flight. Ensure that your policy covers you for a decent period of time. For example, if your flight is delayed, some policies pay you $100 for every 6 consecutive hours of delay. 3. Travel insurance prices in Singapore

Travel insurance in Singapore is very price-sensitive, and sometimes insurers can compete to shave off even $1 from their premiums to make their policies more enticing (yay for us!).

One way to get a cheaper plan is to see which insurers offer regional travel insurance . If you are only travelling to Thailand, for example, it is usually cheaper to get a policy that covers only SEA or ASEAN countries, rather than a worldwide coverage policy .

However, price is not the only factor—especially since cheap insurance policies often mean significantly less coverage. Buying travel insurance is not like buying a “warehouse sale” LV bag in Chatuchak Market. You don’t just shop around, look for the stall owner with the weakest bargaining skills, and haggle the price down as low as can get.

Look at other aspects of the policy when buying travel insurance . There are many other factors to consider—for example, how much coverage you’re eligible for, and how quickly your claims can be processed. Make sure that you don’t have to wait till the next blue moon before you can see the results of your claims.

4. Which travel insurance to buy in Singapore?

Like anything else you purchase, the best travel insurance is what gives you the most value for money. Say you are only travelling to Thailand for a weekend shopping trip, for example. You’re probably travelling light and don’t need more than $3,000 coverage for loss of baggage, even if you can pay just $3 more for significantly more coverage. Save that $3 and treat yourself to all the Thai milk tea you can drink!

As we said earlier, you shouldn’t be so stingy  and only buy the cheapest. The cheapest may have lots of terms and conditions when it comes to claims . For example, an insurer might not cover delayed luggage if it is only delayed returning to Singapore. If this is the only inconvenience you face in your entire trip, you might be understandably upset that it’s not claimable.

The important thing is to read the terms and conditions of your preferred policy carefully and make sure you’re not caught unawares. This is especially important when it comes to medical pre-existing conditions.

5. Common mistakes when buying travel insurance

How many of us actually know how to go about buying a good travel insurance that is suitable for our needs? Here are five common mistakes to avoid when buying travel insurance:

• Buying the most “convenient” travel insurance : Do you just buy the first travel insurance you see on Google? It is important to read the details of the coverage provided to see if they are adequate for your needs or to cover the risks of the destination you’re travelling to, eg. medical coverage and loss of personal belongings.
• Buying travel insurance at the last minute : Do you often buy your travel insurance when waiting to board your flight or while making your way to the airport? Yes, better late than never. However, you should be aware that some of the benefits of the travel insurance are applicable (eg. natural disasters , airline strike, tour agency bankruptcy) if you buy travel insurance ahead of your trip.
• Not buying travel insurance for the entire length of your trip : Should you purchase travel insurance only for the days you are actually overseas? No. You should include flights to and from your holiday destination. In the event of baggage delays, loss or damage, or overbooking of flights, you’d then be able to make a claim. For long haul trips, do remember to cater for the +1 or +2 days that it takes for your flight to reach Singapore.
• Not reading your travel insurance policy : Not all travel insurances are created equal. In fact, the policy document and terms of coverage makes for rather interesting reading. Do go through the policy document for what’s included and excluded, claim limits, and what you gotta do in order to make a claim.
• Assuming travel insurance is “one size fits all” : If your holiday includes adventurous elements like skydiving or scuba diving, check to ensure that the travel insurance you are considering covers these activities. 6. Will pre-existing conditions affect my travel insurance?

One of the biggest travel insurance stories in 2017 was when a Singaporean man had a heart attack in Tokyo and fell into a coma. The medical costs alone cost $120,000 and bringing him back to Singapore via medical evacuation would cost another $120,000.

7. When should I buy travel insurance?

There are many, many things that can go wrong when you’re travelling. Half of these things could happen even before you leave the country!

Waiting to buy your travel insurance policy on the day you travel (or worse, after you’ve already crossed into international waters) puts you at risk for travel inconveniences big and small like delays or postponement.

A good travel insurance policy also covers you for your entire trip being cancelled unexpectedly.

You should buy a travel insurance online as soon as you’ve planned your trip. Getting your travel policy as early as possible does not make you “ kiasu ”. It makes you smart.

This is because you’ll want to maximise the coverage you can get from the policy. For example, if you haven’t bought a policy yet and the travel agency you’re booking with closes down a week before your travel, you won’t be able to claim anything. The same goes for flight delays and flight cancellations.

There is no penalty for buying travel insurance earlier, except maybe missing out on promotions that often happen around the travel season. But what’s the point of saving a few dollars and risk losing hundreds due to cancelled flights and hotel deposits?

8. Buy single trip or annual travel insurance?

In the past, it made more sense to buy single trip travel insurance plans when you leave Singapore. That’s because in the past, most people only travel once or twice a year. With the greater nomad and remote working culture … and travels over long weekend, though? It might actually be more convenient to buy an annual plan for your travel insurance.

A good gauge to determine whether to choose between a single trip plan and an annual plan is to ask yourself if you’re going to be travelling more than 3 times a year . And we’re not just talking about weekend getaways either!

Whether you’re just going across the Causeway or travelling further overseas for work, an annual plan definitely makes more sense to your wallet.

Depending on how often you travel and how far you travel, it might be worthwhile to consider buying annual travel insurance .

If you are a frequent traveller, you not only save money by buying an annual policy, but you’ll never have to spend time buying insurance every time you fly overseas. Of course, just like single trip travel insurance, you should still compare the various policies online before you commit.

Annual travel insurance has a flat premium and covers you for an entire year of travel. It usually costs about $200-$300 a year, so only buy it it you are a frequent traveller. That is, it only makes sense if you are going to travel overseas more than 7-8 times a year, at least.

9. Why should I compare travel insurance before buying it?

Comparing allows you to choose the best travel insurance policy for your needs. You’ll be able to see at a glance what coverage policies have for various situations, such as medical costs, and compensation levels for lost, delayed and damaged baggage.

But of course, comparing travel insurance in Singapore allows you to see that the cheapest travel insurance policy may not be the best. This is because the cheaper policies usually have significantly less coverage, naturally. While that may be a good thing for some travellers – there’s no need to get a $1,000 coverage for lost luggage if you’re only bringing the bare minimum to a staycation in Bangkok, for example.

Children and youth to play central role in Pope Francis visit to Papua New Guinea

Children and youth will be central to Pope Francis’ visit to Papua New Guinea from Sept. 6–9, according to Father Giorgio Licini, secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Solomon Islands.   

Licini, who is on the organizing committee of the Holy Father’s 2024 visit, said young people are central in the planning of the papal trip to Papua New Guinea. In the Catholic Church, “the level of participation by laity and youth is high,” he said. “Everything is ‘young’ in PNG: church, country, modern civilization.” 

“It was only in early October 2023 that our bishops’ conference was told that the pope still had a great desire to visit Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea in Oceania,” Licini told CNA. 

As part of his apostolic journey, Pope Francis is expected to visit a safe house for young girls in Vanimo and then, in the nearby village of Baro, greet missionaries, staff, and students of a school he helped develop. In Port Moresby, the Holy Father intends to meet with children supported by the archdiocese’s ministries for the care of street children. 

“The youth here greatly suffer for lack of education and employment opportunities. The breakdown of the family adds to neglect, poverty, and micro-criminality,” Licini explained. “Besides education and health, nowadays the social services of the Catholic Church focus on family life, child protection and promotion, domestic violence, and sorcery accusations related [to] violence, corruption awareness, and justice, peace, and reconciliation, mainly in [areas affected by tribal violence].” 

The last appointment of the papal visit in Papua New Guinea will be a youth festival at the city stadium in Port Moresby.

Isabella Saleu, a young laywoman working for Caritas Papua New Guinea — the justice, peace, relief, and development agency of the Catholic Church in the country — said she looks forward to the youth festival planned with the pope and believes his visit will be a “spiritually enriching experience” that will reinforce the Catholic identity in the country.

“The world needs us young people and all the enthusiasm we have to make it better, safer, happier and more Christ-like,” Saleu told CNA. “Over the years, the Church has not only evangelized but [also] has contributed immensely to delivering basic services by providing schools and institutions, hospitals, clinics and aid posts, safe houses, and facilities for pastoral and social services.” 

“Considering also the recent fateful events of ‘Black Wednesday’ on Jan. 10 that resulted in deaths and hospitalization, as the country came to a standstill when thugs took over the streets of the capital city Port Moresby who looted and burned down shops and caused the city to tremble in fear as police ceased duties, we hope that the papal visit raises our spirits to continue to move forward as a nation,” she added. 

To date, over 98% of Papua New Guinea citizens identify as Christian. Catholicism represents the largest Christian denomination in the country with an estimated 4 million people — about 25% of the total population. 

Pope Francis’ visit to Papua New Guinea will be his first trip to the country as part of his 11-day Asia Pacific apostolic journey in September. Pope John Paul II visited Papua New Guinea in 1984 and 1995.

There’s a new list ranking the best state parks in the country and an Oregon coast destination snagged the No. 8 spot.

Time Out , an international travel website, compiled the list and Ecola State Park is the only park in the Pacific Northwest that made the cut.

Between Cannon Beach and Seaside, Ecola encompasses 9 miles of coastline with plenty of striking ocean views along with hiking, tidepooling, surfing and wildlife-viewing options.

The park is no stranger to accolades. Last year, Outside magazine picked it as one of the best state parks in the U.S. and in 2018, Oregonian readers picked it as their No. 5 favorite state park.

Time Out is a fan of Ecola after seeing it in movies like “Twilight,” “The Goonies” and “Kindergarten Cop.” The website also likes the park’s views, Indian Beach , the Sitka spruce forest and hiking opportunities like the Clatsop Loop Trail .

Other entries from the western part of the country on Time Out’s list are No. 3 Goblin Valley State Park in Utah, No. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in California and No 6. Chugach State Park in Alaska.

To get to Ecola State Park, take U.S. 101 to City Center in Cannon Beach. On the north end of town, turn west onto East Fifth Street, then right onto Ecola State Park Road. Follow signs for the park. All cars are required to display an annual or day-use parking pass. Day passes are $5 and can be purchased at the park.
