CWT Travel Holdings, Inc. (“CWT”), the global business travel and meetings solutions provider, announced it has completed recapitalization transactions that have significantly strengthened and deleveraged its balance sheet and provides a strong financial foundation with enhanced flexibility.

Berkshire’s profit plunges 64% on portfolio holdings as Buffett sells Apple

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Berkshire Hathaway’s first quarter profits plummeted along with the paper value of its investments, but the company said Saturday that most of the businesses it owns outright performed well.

The company reported reported a $12.7 billion profit, or $8.825 per Class A share, in the quarter. That’s roughly one-third of last year’s $35.5 billion, or $24,377 per A share.

The figures were heavily influenced by a large drop in the paper value of Berkshire’s investments. Buffett encourages investors to pay more attention to the conglomerate’s operating earnings that exclude the investment figures. Operating earnings jumped 39% to $11.222 billion from last year’s $8.065 billion as its insurance companies showed strong results.

On a per share basis, this year’s first quarter operating figure amounts to $7,796.47 per Class A share, beating three analysts’ estimates by FactSet Research, who predicted $6,701.87 per Class A share.

Buffett was a net seller of $17 billion in stocks during the quarter, including trimming about 13% of Berkshire’s massive Apple stake. At $135.4 billion, the iPhone maker still accounts for the biggest share of Berkshire’s $364 billion portfolio. Buffett said he expects it to remain so even up to when his successor Greg Abel takes over.

The estimated value of Berkshire’s Apple stake suggests Buffett sold off more than 100 million shares. In the past, Buffett has said he invested in Apple’s stock because of how devoted consumers are to the company’s products, similar to consumer brands he loves like Berkshire’s own See’s Candy.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who is at the Berkshire meeting, told CNBC that he still considers it a privilege to have Berkshire as a major shareholder, and he knew about the sales before Berkshire disclosed them Saturday.

Berkshire reported a $2.6 billion underwriting profit at its insurers, up from $911 million a year ago, as Geico in particular continued to improve its results. However, BNSF railroad’s profits dropped 8% to $1.143 billion.

Most of Berkshire’s many other companies delivered solid results, including a 72% jump in operating profits at the utility unit, adding $717 million to Berkshire’s total.

Revenue grew 5% to $89.87 billion in the quarter. The two analysts who reported estimates to FactSet predicted $87.044 billion.

With no major acquisitions in sight, Berkshire’s cash pile climbed to a record $188.993 billion even after it spent $2.6 billion repurchasing shares during the first three months of the year. Holdings including Geico insurance, BNSF railroad, several major utilities and an assortment of dozens of others keep generating mountains of cash.

“We’d love to spend it but we won’t spend it unless we’re doing something with very little risk that will make us a lot of money,” Buffett said.

Nationwide has been around close to 100 years after being founded in 1926. The Ohio-based company has many different products in the insurance and finance space, including coverage for trips. Nationwide Travel Insurance policies are available for single or multiple trips and can cover cruise trips too.

Nationwide Travel Insurance offers many of the standard benefits you might see with a travel insurance policy. This can include things like trip cancellation coverage, so you can recover pre-paid costs or trip interruption in the event your vacation is interrupted by an unexpected event. There's also baggage delay coverage and medical coverage.

  • Cancel for any reason coverage available

Nationwide is one of the leading names in insurance across various areas of coverage including life, auto, and travel insurance. Nationwide's coverage is also as comprehensive as it is varied. It tops our list of the best travel insurance companies and best cruise travel insurance , also ranking among the best cheap travel insurance companies for the value it provides.

With single trip, multi trip, and cruise-specific policies along with an abundance of riders, there's a good chance Nationwide will have the coverage you're looking for.

That said, Nationwide lacks some of the niche coverage that other companies can provide. For example, Nationwide doesn't insure trips over 31-days long. Its annual travel insurance only applies to trips 30 days or under. Additionally, Nationwide lacks specific adventure sports coverage.

Ultimately, Nationwide is the company to beat. If you're shopping for something a little more specific, use Nationwide's quotes as your baseline as you search for something more tailored to your trip.

Coverage Options from Nationwide

Nationwide offers many of the standard benefits you might see with a travel insurance policy. This can include things like trip cancellation coverage, so you can recover pre-paid costs or trip interruption in the event your vacation is interrupted by an unexpected event. There's also baggage delay coverage and medical coverage.

The travel insurance policies offered by Nationwide are available to consumers and are divided up by the type of trip: single trip, multiple trips, or cruise coverage.

Single-trip travel insurance policies

Nationwide offers two single-trip travel insurance policies: the Essential plan and the Prime plan.

As the name suggests, Nationwide Essential travel insurance covers the basics. It offers some protection should anything happen ahead of your trip or while you're on your trip.

The Prime plan takes your coverage to the next level, with higher coverage limits and the option to add on the coveted cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage at an extra cost.

Both plans include trip cancellation or interruption coverage in the event of terrorism in your destination city, travel assistance from Nationwide at no additional charge, and refunds with a 10-day review period (except in Washington and New York). Note that for baggage and personal effects coverage, there is a $500 combined maximum limit for valuable items (see your policy's terms and conditions for details on what's considered valuable). It also covers damaged or lost sports equipment.

Here's how the two plans stack up in terms of coverage limits. For trip delay coverage, you'll be eligible for reimbursement for delays of six hours or more.

Annual and multi-trip travel insurance policies

If you're looking for travel insurance coverage for more than one trip and want to cover your partner and children, the Travel Pro Plan may be an affordable option. It's important to note that this policy only covers events after departure, not pre-departure events. This policy could be as low as $59 as of the time of writing.

The Travel Plus Plan is another multi-trip policy from Nationwide that has flexible term limits for trip interruption and cancellation coverage, up to $10,000. This covers the gaps from the Travel Pro Plan, which only covers post-departure events. So if you needed to cancel the trip due to a covered illness or other reason, this is the plan for you.

If you want to increase the level of benefits for your after departure coverage, the Travel Pro Deluxe Plan does just that. It builds on the Travel Pro Plan, hence the name, and includes higher coverage limits for just $20 more.

All plans include the same travel assistance from Nationwide that's included with the single-trip policies. Here's how the multiple-trip plans compare:

Cruise coverage

Nationwide offers three cruise travel insurance plans.

If you're going on a short cruise or going for the first time, the Universal Cruise Plan may be a good starting point if you want added protection and to recoup nonrefundable costs. Just make sure that you qualify based on your state, as cruise coverage isn't available in all states.

If you're going on a longer cruise and want added coverage to protect your trip, the Choice Cruise plan is an option to consider. And if you're looking for the most benefits and go on many cruises, the Luxury Cruise plan offers the most coverage options.

All three policies can be refunded with a 10-day review period, except in Washington and New York.

Here's a comparison of the coverage you'll get with Nationwide's three different cruise travel insurance policies:

Additional coverage options from Nationwide

Nationwide has a number of additional coverage options that can add more protection to your policy but also add to the cost as well. These include:

  • Financial default coverage , in the event your travel supplier ends up in default or bankruptcy. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Pre-existing condition waiver, which may offer coverage for pre-existing illnesses or diseases if certain conditions are met. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment, which can have limits of $5,000, $10,000, $25,000 or $50,000 depending on the plan. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Accidental death for flights only, which can have limits of $100,000, $250,000, or $500,000. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Rental car collision or loss coverage, in the event something happens to your rental car, you can add on this coverage for up to $25,000 or $35,000 depending on the plan. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies (except in Texas or New York).
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) , which must be added to a policy and is available through the single-trip Prime Plan, the Choice Cruise Plan, and the Luxury Cruise Plan.

Nationwide Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The  average cost of travel insurance  is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for Nationwide Insurance plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate Nationwide coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following travel insurance quotes:

  • Essential: $89.55
  • Prime: $129.19

Premiums for Nationwide Insurance plans are between 3% and 4.3% of the trip's cost, well within the average cost of travel insurance.

Nationwide insurance provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • Essential: $113.01
  • Prime: $160.47

Once again, premiums for Nationwide plans are between 2.8% and 4% of the trip's cost, within and below the expected range of travel insurance costs.

A Texas family consisting of two 40-year-old parents with a 10-year-old and 4-year-old on a two-week trip to Australia for $20,000:

  • Essential: $571.62
  • Prime: $801.94

Nationwide plans cost between 2.8% and 4% of the trip's cost, below and within the average cost of travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New Jersey for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following quotes:

  • Essential: $248.56
  • Prime: $352.44

Premiums for Nationwide plans are between 4.1% and 5.9%, which is well the average cost for travel insurance. While its certainly more expensive than coverage for younger travelers, it's on the lower end of what travel insurance companies tend to quote for older travelers.

Nationwide Annual Travel Insurance Cost

Quotes from Nationwide's annual travel insurance plans don't actually change based on age or state. You'll get a base quote of $69, which will vary based on how much trip cancellation coverage you'd like to purchase. Prices range from $155 to $729

You can also select a Pro Delux upgrade, which will cost an additional $20.

How to Purchase and Manage Your Nationwide Policy

To purchase a Nationwide travel insurance policy, you first need to obtain a quote from Nationwide's website. You should be prepared to provide the following:

  • Destination
  • Departure date
  • Return date
  • State of Residence
  • Total trip cost
  • Initial trip payment date

When you select a plan, be sure to also take a moment and scroll through the optional add-ons, such as rental car coverage.

How to File a Claim with Nationwide

If you purchased travel insurance through Nationwide and need to file a claim, you can contact a Nationwide representative. You have seven days from the start of the issue that caused loss to notify Nationwide of your claim.

Claims through Nationwide are handled by Co-ordinated Benefit Plans, LLC. You can use its claims portal or call a representative, based on your type of policy.

Nationwide refrains from promising a specific response time frame. However, customers have reported waiting several weeks before hearing any updates.

Since Nationwide offers such a wide breadth of insurance types, it's difficult to separate its travel-specific customer reviews from reviews on its other products. It received an average of 1.16 stars out of five across over 340 reviews on its BBB page, though most customers are writing about experiences with Nationwide's auto and health insurance.

On SquareMouth, a travel insurance-specific aggregator, Nationwide has an average of 4.01 stars across 570 reviews. Reviewers reported unresponsive a claims team and long wait times. Additionally, while insurance companies often engage directly with customer reviews on SquareMouth, Nationwide doesn't respond to customer reviews.

Nationwide Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Much like Nationwide, Allianz Travel Insurance insurance offers many different types of insurance coverage. While the company may be most well known for auto insurance, it offers travel insurance as well and has eight options. Allianz Travel Insurance, a major player in the travel insurance space, has 10 options listed.

Allianz Travel Insurance may offer higher coverage limits for the policies offered and have a streamlined process for filing a claim online. Where Nationwide wins out is the fact that you can add cancel for any reason (CFAR) for an added cost, whereas CFAR coverage isn't available when purchasing an online policy via Allianz Travel Insurance.

Read our Allianz Travel Insurance review here.

Nationwide Travel Insurance vs. John Hancock Travel Insurance

John Hancock Travel Insurance  is similar to Nationwide in that it provides a wide range of insurance offerings and financial services. One of those offerings is travel insurance. John Hancock travel insurance offers travel insurance through Bronze, Silver, and Gold policies.

When comparing policies, the budget option may be slightly more affordable with Nationwide. However, mid-tier and higher coverage options may be more affordable with John Hancock travel insurance. It depends on your policy, trip details, and age. One good thing is that you can add cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage under all John Hancock travel insurance plan options.

Read our John Hancock Travel Insurance review here.

Nationwide vs. credit card travel coverage

Rewards credit cards come chock full of benefits for cardholders, some of which they might be unaware of. One such perk can be travel interruption or cancellation coverage as well as rental car coverage. Credit cards may have sufficient coverage for quick trips. However, if you want the peace of mind of having solid medical coverage or higher limits, going the traditional travel insurance route may be a better fit.

For frequent travelers, credit card travel protection may be appealing as the coverage is constant. If you're looking for a comparable travel insurance plan with more comprehensive coverage, some companies offer annual travel insurance.

You can find our guide on the best credit cards with travel insurance  here.

Nationwide Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Nationwide Travel Insurance

For our review of Nationwide, we looked at the leading travel insurance providers and compared the amount of options provided, coverage limits, cost, customer service options, and flexibility.

Nationwide is a top contender for cruise-related travel insurance policies and stands out for having cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage, though it's not available with every policy and comes with an extra cost. To find the best travel insurance policy for you, review various providers and compare quotes before buying a policy.

World Travel Holdings Offering Up to $1 Million in Commercial Loans to its Network of Travel Agency Franchise Owners as Part of a Financial Assistance Program

“We’re There To Help” Stimulus Plan provides resources and funding for franchise owners with Dream Vacations/CruiseOne ®

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (February 12, 2021) – Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, home-based travel agency franchise Dream Vacations/CruiseOne ® has been an industry leader with its support of its franchise owners. With the financial backing of its parent company World Travel Holdings, the nation’s largest cruise agency and award-winning leisure travel company, the franchisor has raised the bar even higher by offering up to $1 Million in commercial loans to its franchise owners as part of its “We’re There to Help” Stimulus Plan.

“For our franchise owners, travel is more than a passion, it is their livelihood and the pandemic has had serious implications on their businesses,” said Drew Daly, senior vice president and general manager of Dream Vacations/CruiseOne. “As a franchisor, we take pride in providing our franchise owners the resources they need to succeed. However, in times like these, it is crucial to go beyond providing a ‘business-in-a-box.’ The success of our franchisees is our only business and this Stimulus Plan supports the foundation of our business model — to support small business owners.”

The “We’re There to Help” Stimulus Plan, which represents World Travel Holdings’ initials, has a three-pronged approach to providing franchisees with additional resources and financial assistance to navigate through 2021 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • World Travel Holdings-Funded Commercial Loan – World Travel Holdings will make up to $1 Million available in commercial loans to qualified Dream Vacations/CruiseOne franchisees. Applicants will have to explain how they plan to use their funds and submit a business plan to be considered.
  • PPP Assistance with Bank – Through a partnership with World Travel Holdings’ banking institution, they negotiated an agreement where Dream Vacations/CruiseOne franchisees can receive assistance from the bank in securing a PPP loan.
  • Cares Page – Dream Vacations/CruiseOne created a special section on its Business Center intranet that consolidates financial assistance information from World Travel Holdings, government, franchising, trade and business organizations in one easy-to-find location.

“We are seeing the biggest pent-up demand for travel in history and extremely strong bookings for the end of 2021 and into 2022, and after more than a year of minimal travel and sales, we want to help ensure our franchisees can sustain their business for when this travel boom arrives,” said Brad Tolkin, co-CEO/chairman of World Travel Holdings. “In spite of World Travel Holdings not qualifying for PPP funds due to our size, it was very important to us to find a way to provide additional assistance for the small business owners within our franchise system. We know the future of leisure travel is bright and we want to do our part and assist our travel agency franchise owners to be ready to meet this demand.”

The “We’re There to Help” Stimulus Plan is just one of many initiatives that Dream Vacations/CruiseOne has implemented to provide assistance to its franchisees during COVID-19. They have provided enhanced support to its existing franchisees by offering the option to defer monthly fees for up to six months; hosting Town Halls and webinars with industry executives; presenting robust virtual training and conferences; creating increased and unique engagement opportunities such as a Walking Club and more. Dream Vacations/CruiseOne has steadily been recruiting the entire year and new travel agency franchises are opening each month. The franchisor has adapted its onboarding process for new franchisees to better meet the unique challenges they are facing while opening during a pandemic. The saying “We Care More” has always been a mantra for Dream Vacations/CruiseOne, and it has never been as meaningful as it has these last 14 months.

To learn more about joining the travel agency franchise that cares more about its franchise owners, please visit www.dreamvacationsfranchise.com or call 888-249-8235.

10 of the Deadliest Snakes in the World

Warning: If you have ophidiophobia — an extreme fear of snakes — you may want to avert your eyes; we're about to talk about the deadliest snakes in the world .

There are more than 3,000 species of snakes on the planet. These cold-blooded reptiles live nearly everywhere except — not surprisingly — in the colder climates of Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland and Greenland. And somewhat surprisingly, New Zealand.

But not all of them are deadly. Only about 15 percent (450) of snakes in the world are venomous snakes, and only about a third of those (150) can kill or seriously injure a human with a single bite.

While our list happens to comprise venomous snakes, let's keep in mind "deadly" doesn't have to mean they use potent venom to kill. Several non-venomous snakes are deadly, too, including the garter snake and the python , which kill by swallowing their prey alive or constricting them to death.

Here are 10 of the deadliest snakes in the world, in no particular order.

1. Saw Scaled Viper

The saw-scaled viper ( Echis carinatus ) is the smallest member of the " big four " in India, which includes the Russell's viper, the common krait ( Bungarus caeruleus ) and the Indian cobra ( Naja naja ). The saw-scaled viper is thought to be responsible for the most snake bite deaths in India. A single bite can cause internal bleeding and ultimately acute kidney failure. This snake's warning is described as a "sizzle" rather than a "hiss," which it creates by "sawing" (rubbing) its serrated scales together.

2. Inland Taipan

Quite possibly the deadliest snake in the world due to its extremely potent venom, Australia's inland taipan ( Oxyuranus microlepidotus ) is scientifically touted as the world's most venomous snake. The inland taipan lives tucked away in the clay crevices of Queensland and South Australia's floodplains, where it rarely comes in contact with humans. But if you do stumble upon one, look out for a tight S-shape coil just before it darts out to bite. A unique component among snakes, the venom contains the enzyme hyaluronidase , which (thankfully?) spreads the toxins throughout the victim's body, leading to a quick death.

3. Coastal Taipan

Cousin to the inland taipan, the coastal taipan ( Oxyuranus scutellatus ) snake is considered even more dangerous because its habitat is more accessible to unsuspecting human visitors. Coastal taipan snakes live in abandoned animal burrows, hollow logs and in piles of vegetation along the east coast from northeastern New South Wales through Queensland and across the north to north-west Australia. The other subspecies, Oxyuranus scutellatus canni , lives in southern New Guinea.

4. Black Mamba

Africa's black mamba ( Dendroaspis polylepis ) gets its name from the black interior of its mouth. Watch out for this dangerous snake on your next safari to the savannahs, hill country, and forests in southern and eastern Sub-Saharan Africa. Black mambas are known for being dangerously quick. Don't expect to outrun one, as the snake is one of the fastest on land, and can slither at speeds up to 12 miles per hour (19 kilometers per hour). But it's the black mamba's venom you need to be most concerned about. Before striking you'll get a warning hiss. If ignored, it will then strike repeatedly in rapid succession. Just two drops of the black mamba's venom can cause paralysis and cardiac arrest.

5. Banded Krait

Another of India's "big four" dangerous snakes is the banded krait ( Bungarus fasciatus ). It is one of the largest kraits and can grow up to 6.9 feet (2.1 meters) long. The banded krait is generally shy, and mainly nocturnal, and most likely to hunt at night. If bothered, it usually won't bite, though at night it is much more dangerous. As a relative of the cobra, the krait is extremely venomous and a single bite can paralyze muscles, preventing the diaphragm of its prey from moving, resulting in suffocation.

6. King Cobra

The aptly named king cobra ( Ophiophagus hannah ) is the world's longest venomous snake, measuring up to 18 feet (5.4 meters). King cobras have eagle eyes that can spot prey from nearly 330 feet (100 meters) away. They're considered aggressive, partly because of their long fangs and striking appearance. You're probably familiar with the "hood" around the head these snakes create when they face predators. It's a mechanism they use to make themselves appear larger, though they don't really need it. That's because the king cobra's venom contains high amounts of cytotoxins and neurotoxins. One bite can kill a human in 15 minutes and an adult elephant in just a few hours.

7. Boomslang Snake

This deadly snake with a funny name is no joke. The boomslang snake ( Dispholidus typus ) is another African resident that lives primarily in Eswatini , Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Boomslang snakes are rarely aggressive, but will inflate their necks to appear bigger and more intimidating to predators. Their stealth ability to camouflage allows them to easily lie in wait for passing prey. Then they strike and the highly toxic venom causes their victims to bleed out.

8. Russell's Viper

Russell's viper ( Daboia russelii ), another of India's "big four," is considered one of the deadliest snakes of the true vipers . They're also found in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where they're cause for high mortality among paddy farmers where they hide in the paddy fields. The snake's venom can lead to acute kidney failure, severe bleeding and multi-organ damage.

9. Eastern Brown Snake

The extremely venomous eastern brown snake ( Pseudonaja textilis ) is native to eastern and central Australia and southern New Guinea where it's usually found in open spaces like woodlands, grasslands, farmland and even in the outskirts of urban areas. Its venom contains powerful presynaptic neurotoxins, procoagulants, cardiotoxins and nephrotoxins. While a single bite from an eastern brown snake is deceptively painless, the snake's venom can cause progressive paralysis and uncontrollable bleeding, including bleeding into the brain. Even though it's not the most venomous snake, it has the distinction of causing more deaths than any other snake species in Australia.

10. Eastern Tiger Snake

Native to the mountains and grasslands of southeast Australia, the eastern tiger snake ( Notechis scutatus ) is named for the yellow and black bands on its body, though not all populations sport that pattern. Its potent venom can cause kill a human if a snake bite is left untreated.

Now That's Scary While Africa and Australia are popular habitats for some of the most venomous snakes in the world, many other deadly snakes live in Asia, like the blue krait ( Bungarus Candidus ) – Asia's most venomous snake. The fer-de-lance ( Bothrops asper ), which is a type of pit viper, also is highly venomous and considered the most dangerous snake of Central and South America.

Walking Tour: Kitai Gorod

Kitai Gorod, with its twisting and winding streets, is the oldest section of Moscow outside the Kremlin. The literal translation of Kitai Gorod is "Chinatown," but there has never been a Chinese settlement here. The origin of the word kitai is disputed; it may come from the Tatar word for fortress, but most likely it derives from the Russian word kita, in reference to the bundles of twigs that were used to reinforce the earthen wall that once surrounded the area.

Kitai Gorod begins where Red Square ends. Settlement of this area began in the 12th century, around the time that the fortified city of Moscow was founded on Borovitsky Hill (the site of the present-day Kremlin). By the 14th century Kitai Gorod was a thriving trade district, full of shops and markets. At that time it was surrounded by earthen ramparts, which were replaced in the 16th century by a fortified wall, remnants of which still remain. As Moscow grew, so did Kitai Gorod.

At the time of the Bolshevik Revolution it was the city's most important financial and commercial district, with major banks, warehouses, and trading companies concentrated here. These days the multitude of shops, restaurants, and banks demonstrates the area's reasserted role as an energized commercial center.

A good starting point for your tour is Nikolskaya ulitsa, which begins at the corner opposite the Historical Museum and runs along the north side of GUM. If you are coming from St. Basil's, walk away from St. Basil's toward the Historical Museum alongside GUM. If you are coming from outside of Red Square, get to Nikolskaya by way of Teatralnaya Ploshchad (Theater Square). If you are standing with your back to the Bolshoi on this square, walk straight ahead, cross the street, and enter one of the narrow passageways to the right or left of the Teatralnaya metro station (as you are facing it). Taking a right out of either passageway will bring you to Nikolskaya ulitsa. Go a short way farther to the right, to the cobblestone edge of Red Square, to begin your walk.

Nikolskaya ulitsa, which is named after the Kremlin's Nikolskaya Gate Tower, is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. At the corner with Red Square is the Kazansky Sobor . Leaving the church, take a left to make your way through the teeming crowds of shoppers on Nikolskaya ulitsa to No. 7, the Zaikonospassky Monastyr , the former Slavonic-Greco-Latin Academy now undergoing a slow restoration. Farther down the street, also on the left-hand side, is a once brightly painted white-and-aqua building with an elaborate facade (No. 15). The building was erected in 1810-14 on the site of the 16th-century Pechatny Dvor (Printing Yard), where Russia's first printed book was assembled in 1553. Today the building houses the Moscow Institute of Historical Records and the Moscow Humanitarian University. Cross the street to go down Bogoyavlensky pereulok. Halfway down the block, opposite the entrance to the Ploshchad Revolutsii metro, is the Bogoyavlensky Sobor . Continue down the street to where it intersects with ulitsa Ilinka. Before the 1917 revolution this was Moscow's Wall Street, and it is still lined with the impressive facades of former banks.

On the left-hand corner stands the former Ryabushinsky Bank . As you cross the street, look to your right; ulitsa Ilinka leads directly to the Kremlin's Tower of the Savior. At No. 3 stands the Tserkov Svyatoi Ilii church from which the street takes its name. The church, which dates to 1520, is in disrepair except for its facade. Opposite the church is one of the border streets of the Gostinny Dvor merchant's arcade. Turn left and walk the length of Khrustalny pereulok to reach one of the oldest streets in Moscow, Varvarka ulitsa. The opposite side of the street is lined with quaint old churches and buildings, but the first thing you'll likely notice is the gray bulk of the massive, concrete-and-glass Rossiya, one of Europe's largest and most unattractive hotels.

At the farthest corner of the street, to your right, is the Tserkov Velikomuchenitsy Varvary . Adjacent is the English Court . Next comes the white-stone Tserkov Maksima Blazhennovo . The pointed bell tower situated just before the semicircle sidewalk leading to the upper-level entrance of the Rossiya hotel was once attached to the redbrick Znamensky Sobor on the other side of the sidewalk; with its foundation on the slope below, it is set back from the street. At No. 10 is the Palaty Romanovych v Zaryadye , believed to be the birthplace of Tsar Mikhail Romanov. Before leaving Varvarka ulitsa take note of the last church, the blue Tserkov Georgiya na Pskovskoy Gorke at No. 12.

If you stand to the left of the church (on the walkway leading to the Rossiya hotel) you can glimpse a remnant of Kitai Gorod's 16th-century brick fortification wall. It is to your left, opposite the hotel's eastern facade. Cross to the other side of Varvarka ulitsa and walk a short hop past the final church. Make a right and climb up the narrow Ipatevsky pereulok, which leads to several government and administrative buildings. At the top of the incline to the right is one of Moscow's best-preserved 17th-century churches, the Tserkov Troitsy v Nikitnikach .

Continue down the lane to the right of the church to reach Novaya Ploshchad, or New Square, which is more like a boulevard than a square. To your right, at the far bottom of the hill, Slavyanskaya Ploshchad opens up. At the bottom of the hill is the redbrick Tserkov Vsekh Svyatykh na Kulishkakh . From Novaya Ploshchad stroll for a long block or two past the government buildings, where the Central Committee of the Communist Party once sat. Now these buildings house the Duma of the Moscow Region. Soon you will come to the beginning of a busy intersection. To your right, in the median strip that divides Novaya Ploshchad, is a park that holds the Plevna Memorial, an octagonal, towerlike monument commemorating the Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Plevna in the Russo-Turkish War (1878). Keep walking up the street on the left side to go to the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy , a small museum on Moscow's history.

Note the building on the opposite side of the street that takes up the entire block. This is the Politekhnichesky Muzey , a museum of science and technology. Directly north of this museum is yet another museum, Muzey Mayakovskovo , which includes a re-creation of the study of the great revolutionary poet. A short distance from here, Novaya Ploshchad intersects with the circular Lubyanskaya Ploshchad , where you can behold the Lubyanka Prison and the former KGB headquarters, which now house the FSB -- the New Russia's federal security service. On the west side of the square is Detsky Mir, a large department store that used to specialize in toys but now carries all sorts of items.

Walk past Lubyanskaya Ploshchad to the west side, down to where it converges with the broad street of Teatralny proyezd, Moscow's most elite shopping street. On a side street to your right stands the ornate and luxurious Savoy hotel (3 Rozhdestvenka ulitsa), which, like the nearby Metropol hotel, was built in connection with the celebrations in the early 20th century honoring 300 years of the Romanov dynasty. On the left-hand side of the street you will pass a statue of Ivan Fyodorov, the printer who produced Russia's first book at the old Printing Yard on Nikolskaya ulitsa. The arched gateway just to the right of the statue links Teatralny proyezd with Nikolskaya ulitsa, the street on which you started the tour. Teatralny proyezd leads into Teatralnaya Ploshchad, site of three of Moscow's most important theaters.

Taking up the block on the southeast corner, the first building you will encounter to your left as you approach Teatralnaya Ploshchad is the Metropol , an art nouveau hotel. Reaching the square, you will see at the center a large monument to Karl Marx, carved on the spot from a 200-ton block of granite and unveiled in 1961. Across the boulevard stands the Bolshoi Theater , flanked on the left, on the corner farthest away from you, by the Central Children's Theater, and, to the right, by the Maly Theater . Turn left at the corner of the Metropol, and walk by the park and the hotel's main entrance. The large redbrick wall ahead is the other surviving remnant of the 16th-century fortification wall that once surrounded Kitai Gorod.

The wall has been heavily rebuilt, and a new tower has been added. Inside the tower are a couple of restaurants and bars. When you reach the Teatralnaya/Ploshchad Revolutsii metro station, take a moment to admire the exterior of the massive redbrick building on the corner -- the Muzey V. I. Lenina . If you still have some time but not much energy, consider hopping on Trolleybus 2, which can be caught at the bus stop opposite the Bolshoi Theater. The trolley ride takes about 45 minutes and makes a loop passing by Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, Ploshchad Pobedi (Victory Square -- note the obelisk topped by an angel), the Borodino Battle Panorama (in a circular blue pavilion), Kievsky vokzal (train station), the Novy Arbat, and Alexander Garden, before returning to Teatralnaya Ploshchad. You can purchase a ticket for 10R from the driver. Try to have exact change. Make sure to punch the ticket on board the bus.

Taken at a leisurely pace, with stops at least to glance at the interiors of the many churches along the route, this walk should take about five hours.
