Your tour offered me the opportunity to climb the steps to the Black Madonna in the cathedral, but climbing them isn’t required. Anne also drove others to the top, accommodating all of us. She also shared her knowledge about the area’s history, culture, and local points of interest. Five of us were picked up and dropped off in a nice, clean van on time. We even had time for shopping and photo stops. Read more Written October 7, 2023
  • Phizz_17 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Informative tour with excellent tastings. The tour was well organised and the guide was very informative. The tastings were done well with explanations about the different cheeses, then the charcuterie with their matched wines and finally a celebration of walnuts in the form of walnut cake and croquants with an espresso. We learnt about the city of Sarlat and its renovation from the 60’s. A very enjoyable and informative tour. Read more Written September 24, 2023

Super viewpoints across the river valley and an enjoyable boat trip on the Dordogne, where we learnt about historic trade on the river. Everyone in our group was friendly. Beynac is quite a steep descent by foot from the top. Less mobile people might want to travel back down in the vehicle. Read more Written September 22, 2023

The half day tour is a great introduction to the town and surrounding areas, particularly if you don’t have a car. The tour is conducted with a small, manageable group in a comfortable, air conditioned car. I was lucky enough to have Anne on a three tours I did with Ophorus in the area - she was knowledgeable, fun, accommodated everyone’s needs and made it a special experience! The tour group do such a great job I think they should also offer full day tours to Rocamadour, especially for travellers without cars so they can explore and experience more of the village. Highly recommend! Read more Written September 21, 2023
  • SNG56 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Nice way to spend an afternoon. Lovely trip through 3 typical villages, each with something unique to it. Ann was a great guide and driver. My main issue had to do with the boat ride. It was all in French and while we were given Audio guides, what we heard was completely different and not at all current compared to what the tour guide was saying. I understand enough French to know the difference and the experience was very disappointing. Read more Written September 18, 2023

Lascaux, the Sistine chapel of Périgord

cave tours in dordogne france

The most famous cave in Périgord is renowned for its multiple prehistoric representations. It is not uncommon to find a cave with paintings or sculptures dating from Prehistory in Europe, but Lascaux has a variety and countless elements that make it a must for your stay in the Dordogne.

The original decorated cave is closed to the public since 1963 in order to preserve his exceptionally rare works. However, the International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV offers a faithful reproduction. There bull room will impress young and old, open your eyes wide, you will find a prehistoric sign, a painting, an engraving... No less than 357 horses will be presented to you and even 1 human representation! Extremely rare representation in prehistoric art.

Lascaux, unique in Dordogne and in France!

cave tours in dordogne france

The Lascaux cave is unique In France ! There are certainly many other caves in the country, but none have such sumptuous representations of prehistoric art. In addition, the Montignac-Lascaux cave is the cave which concentrates the most reproductions, it is equivalent to 2 Chauvet and 4 Cosquer! Don't miss this national monument which makes the Dordogne famous throughout the world.

There are numerous prehistoric caves in the Vézère valley.

Of the 400 decorated caves discovered in Europe, 40 are recorded in Dordogne! A stone's throw from the Lascaux cave: prehistoric sites, prehistoric caves with paintings, prehistoric caves with engravings, prehistoric shelters with bas-reliefs, the National Museum of Prehistory, the Prehistory Interpretation Center... The Vézère valley is an open-air scene for those who want to discover the prehistoric period. The International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV brings together on its walls an impressive collection of prehistoric works. Some of the signs present or its engravings are also found in the caves of Combarelles or Bara-Bahau, but one such concentration is exceptional .

Lascaux IV is the entire original cave

cave tours in dordogne france

Le facsimile intended to faithfully represent the walls and contours of the prehistoric cave. For this, the Montignac-Lascaux workshops carried out precision work. The hall of the bulls, the axial diverticulum, the nave or the apse could be recreated life-size to make you feel the emotion of discovery  ! The well, inaccessible in its initial configuration, was reproduced in the Lascaux Workshop to be able to admire the only human representation discovered to date in the Lascaux cave.

Lascaux, an architectural gem

cave tours in dordogne france

The International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV is an almost imperceptible building as it is integrated into the hill. The architectural firm has strived not to distort this hill, classified as a Historic Monument since 1940, then listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1970s.

When we visit Lascaux IV we admire the village of Montignac-Lascaux . Indeed, the visit begins with the panoramic terrace to contemplate the view of the village and explain the formation of the Vézère valley and the geology of the place. Visiting a cave is above all venture underground, you will realize this throughout the visit from the ambient darkness linked to the underground aspect of the building. However, light also has its place in this place, it bursts out spectacularly between the reproduction of the cave and the workshop in this part called the fault!

Diverse visits

The International Center for Cave Art is a reproduction of the Lascaux cave, but not only that! In this building various tours are offered to the public.

Want an exceptional evening? There Cave Art and Gastronomy evening is made for you. After a unique visit to the cavity, a menu prepared by a star chef is served accompanied by stories et anecdotes on the life of the man from Lascaux.

cave tours in dordogne france

You are in in family  ? Prioritize the narrated visit. With an explorer, children will explore the cave in a fun way. A “visiting companion” is provided during this unforgettable experience in the heart of Prehistory.

If you want a traditional visit, know that the discovery of the International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV is free for children under 5 years old and that combined tickets with other family sites are possible.

Do you prefer a private visit  from Lascaux? Book Lascaux II for your company or group of friends. For an attractive price, you can relive the discovery in the style of Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agniel or Simon Coencas.

For easy access to the visit of Lascaux

Lascaux is like the Eiffel Tower, it’s unmissable during a stay in France! This is why it is better to prepare for your visit.

Here are some tips for you:

La online booking, you know ? It is primordial if you are planning a stay in the Dordogne in the summer season. The opening hours are wide but visiting slots fill up quickly in summer. Book as soon as possible on lascaux.fr

Are you early? That's good ! The International Center for Cave Art keeps a few tickets on sale every morning in summer when the counters open. Please note, the slots are established in advance, you will not be able to actually choose your visiting time but if you are just passing through, you can try your luck.

Are you more of an evening person? Even better ! The slots of Evening visits are often less complete. We know that you want to have a little Monbazillac on the terrace for an aperitif, but choosing an evening visit means choosing a more intimate visit.

No more visits for Lascaux IV? The Lascaux II cave is still open to the public, it still welcomes nearly 70 visitors per year. This facsimile opened in 000 already offers 1983% of the original cave, not bad for an introduction to the world of cave art.

And then, as we told you above, there is no shortage of caves in the Dordogne?

Gouffre de Padirac visitor guide

Photo of Gouffre de Padirac

Visit Gouffre de Padirac, France

The Gouffre de Padirac is an incredible cave system in the Dordogne (slightly outside the department, in the Lot department), containing an underground river and gorge and a huge cavern.

Underground lakes and pools and stalactite formations all add to its appeal but somehow it is the sheer size of the caverns that is really incredible. It is the most visited system of French caves and the number one tourist attraction of the Midi-Pyrenees region.

Explore the Gouffre de Padirac

The cave system at Padirac is 103 meters below ground and can be accessed via a lift or a staircase. Once in the cave system you are taken by a boat through the galleries and on to the large cavern. The boat is punted by a guide who can tell you a bit about the formation of the cave system.

Gouffre de Padirac

As you glide over the "Lac de la Pluie" or lake of rain, you do indeed find yourself being 'rained' on by the water which is permanently running down the walls and in places overhead as it runs over one of the stalactite formations.

At the edge of the main cavern you leave the boat and begin the walking tour into the heart of the cathedral-like space that is the 'Grand Dome' of Padirac. This cavern is incredible, with the river flowing along the bottom, a majestic rock enclosed space opens up above you with stalactite formations in places. The dome is 94 meters high.

A steep staircase then leads you up to the top of the cavern to get a view of the cavern from above and the sight of some lovely water pools along the way. (It is possible to walk back along the edge of the river to the boats if the climb is likely to be too difficult for you).

At the end of the tour your boat takes you back to the stairs and lifts to climb back to the surface.

History of the Padirac Cave

At some point in time a section of roof fell in on the underground cave system at Padirac forming a chasm 75 meters deep and a diameter of 35m.

However it was not until 1889 that Edouard-Alfred Martel, an amateur explorer, lowered a ladder and discovered the wonders below. Martel and his team realised they had encountered something extraordinary and began a series of expeditions to explore the site.

Martel lacked the money to develop the site but a stroke of luck led to the opening of the caves. Martel forgot his maps and development-ideas for the Grotte in a Paris taxi and the next passenger happened to be George Beamish, wealthy heir of the Irish Beamish beer company. He was fascinated and asked Martel if he could be involved in the project.

Nine years later the works finished and the first visitors descended into the cave. The official opening was in April of 1899. Visitor numbers continued to rise and nowadays an incredible 400, 000 people visit every year!

Gouffre de Padirac

Legend of the Gouffre de Padirac

Because of the big hole in the ground the Gouffre de Padirac has always been linked to various legends, generally involving the devil! One of the main legends is that of Saint Martin.

The devil apparently formed the chasm with a kick of his heel and challenged Saint Martin to cross it. The devil said that if Saint Martin succeeded he would spare the souls of the peasants he was about to drive to hell. Saint Martin spurred his mule and leapt the chasm and the hoof marks can still be seen today!

Visiting the Cave

When I visited the cave recently I was amazed to see a virtual village surrounding the cave. There are a number of buildings that were built in the 1930s when tourism really took off. These are the ticket office, a cafe, a kiosk and a buvette (for drinks and snacks) and are all built in a similar style.

There is also a very pleasant park which was laid out and planted at the same time and is a great place to relax before or after a visit to the caves as well as various other cafes and restaurants and lots of parking.

When I arrived and saw all the cars I was worried that long queues were awaiting me, but no. The whole site seems to be run very efficiently. Despite it being a busy day in July I had a wait of only about 20 minute at the ticket office followed by a 5-10 minute wait underground to get on one of the boats.

It is possible to book online to avoid the queues.

What will I do during this tour ?

A tour of the Lascaux cave replica

The Lascaux cave located in the commune of Montignac-Lascaux in the Dordogne department in the Vézère valley is one of the most important decorated caves of the Upper Paleolithic by the number and the aesthetic quality of its works. It is sometimes called “the Sistine Chapel of cave art”. It was discovered in 1940 by 4 local teenagers who discovered what they thought was just a hole in the hill of Lascaux, they then decided to enlarge it and came face to face with these paintings made by our Cro-Magnon ancestors.

Today the original cave is closed to the public in order to preserve this site which is listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNSECO. However, in order to allow everyone to admire the masterpieces of prehistory, a reconstruction of the Lascaux site has been made. Get ready to go back in time by diving into the heart of the almost complete replica of the cave thanks to Lascaux IV and its 3D digital tour .

Why to Take a Private Tour of Prehistoric Caves in France

..culture, history & luxury come together.

While “prehistoric history” isn’t usually the first thing people think of when they imagine visiting France, the truth is that the country is endowed with an astonishing amount of it. Between 21,000 and 12,000 BC, a paleolithic civilization known as the Magdalenians ushered in an era of advancement in the realm of art and culture– leaving behind a series of remarkable prehistoric caves in France that are decorated with mysterious paintings and engravings. Clustered in the region known as the Dordogne, these sites remain an enormous draw card for visitors hoping to connect with our distant ancestors.

For anyone seeking a balance between culture, history and luxury on their next French holiday, a bespoke tour of the Dordogne and its many prehistoric riches is certainly a good idea. If you’re interested in exploring this fascinating part of the country but wish to do so without sacrificing comfort and luxury, read on.

The stunning prehistoric caves of Dordogne, including Lascaux, offer an enchanting glimpse into our ancestors. They also remind us that art and culture have thrived in France thousands of years before our modern era. Our private tours of prehistoric sites meld culture and high luxury.

See The Dordogne’s Most Beautiful Caves in Style & Comfort

While some travellers will opt to rent a car and explore the prehistoric sites of the Dordogne on their own, one clear advantage of taking a bespoke tour of the area is that you won’t have to do any of the heavy lifting. Your private docent will organise an extraordinary itinerary that will take you straight to the region’s most-stunning caves and other marvels of prehistory, and you’ll be able to sit back and relax as you’re ushered in a comfortable, well-appointed vehicle. Sit back and relax while you enjoy the rugged natural scenery: this is one of France’s most beautiful regions, boasting pristine, rushing rivers, green, unspoiled landscapes and dramatic cliffside villages.

There are nearly a dozen prehistoric caves of note in the Dordogne, and your bespoke tour can include as many of these as you wish. Chief on the list will be the astonishing site at Lascaux, which is located about 30 minutes from the town of Sarlat and arguably harbors the most-celebrated prehistoric cave art in the world. While the genuine site has been closed to the public to protect the “Sistine Chapel” of the Upper Paleolithic era from further degradation and damage, the replica cave remains a true marvel. There are some 2,000 figures painted and engraved here in minute detail, exactly reproducing the colors and forms of the originals: aurochs, stags, a wooly rhinoceros, and other animals; intriguingly, only one image of a man graces the walls here.

Other sites worth seeing on your private excursion include the incredible Rouffignac Cave, which extends for eight to ten kilometres underground and are graced with some 150 prehistoric paintings. Here, you’ll see figures of ice-age creatures such as wooly mammoths, as well as bison, ibex and rhinoceros. The trip here includes an intriguing ride on an underground train to traverse the enormous network of subterranean caves.

Paleolithic Wonders in the Vézères Valley Meanwhile, Les Eyzies is a village situated in the heart of the Vézère Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its paleolithic and prehistoric sites. Wall paintings, caves and archaeological sites abound in the area, and the village itself is a rugged, fascinating place that almost appears carved into the rock itself.

Here, you’ll be able to explore the extensive collections of the National Prehistory Museum, explore a genuine Cro-Magnon shelter, and visit the International Centre of Prehistory for even more in-depth exploration of the region’s millennia-long connections to prehistoric humans and civilisations. Key in the region is the Font de Gaume Cave, boasting some 200 breathtaking, original Ice-Age era cave paintings of animals.

The Abri du Cap Blanc rock shelter is also impressive, albeit small: the shelter features bas-relief sculptures of animals, mostly horses. And at the Palaeolithic site known as Les Combarelles, visitors can discover over 600 engraved images of reindeer, bison, ibex, bears, lions and other fauna.

In addition to these famous places, there are many other fascinating sites in the Dordogne to include on your bespoke itinerary, from stalactite caves and formations to many other caves marked indelibly by prehistoric humans. We’ll put together one that’s perfect for you.

Combine culture with gastronomy and wine.

A second reason to embark on a private tour of the Dordogne and its remarkable prehistoric sites with us? Your tour can easily meld culture and history with an in-depth exploration of the region’s distinctive gastronomy and wine. While other tours focus exclusively on art and archaeology in the region, your bespoke itinerary will also give you an insider’s view of the culinary traditions and winemaking activities that make it so special.

You may stop and sample local goat’ and sheep’s cheeses, from Rocamadour and Cabecou de Perigord to Tommette d’Echourgnac, or taste market-fresh specialities made with truffle, walnuts, foie gras or mushrooms. No matter the season, a whirl through local markets to meet the area’s best artisans and get an authentic sense of the ambient culinary culture is always in order.

Exclusive, private visits to local producers of delicacies such as foie gras, walnut oils, caviar and fine liqueurs also offer a wonderful way to discover the region’s numerous gastronomic delights. You’ll be able to learn firsthand how these coveted traditional products are made and enjoy authentic meetings with local artisans.

Wine aficionado? Your private guide can make arrangements for exclusive tastings in some of the region’s best cellars. Wines to try from the area include vintages from the Cotes de Gascogne near Bergerac; from the Ayveron region, and the Cotes de Dordogne appellation. These are confidential vintnering areas whose secrets will be unlocked during your bespoke tour. Expect nothing short of extraordinary tastings– and if you so choose, we can also arrange for gastronomic dining experiences paired with excellent local wines. Whatever your culinary curiosities, you can be sure that they’ll be sated.

Stay in Luxury & Style

Last but certainly not least, embarking with us on a private tour around France’s most remarkable prehistoric caves and paleolithic sites will allow you to stay in some of the region’s most sought-after hotels. What could be better than following a day of exploring, hiking and tasting with a luxurious evening in beautiful natural surroundings?

Examples of hotels and lodgings we especially covet include Les Glycines in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, an extensive property with lush parklands, an onsite spa and outdoor pool perfect for relaxing at day’s end, rustic yet luxurious wooden lodges surrounded by lush gardens, and onsite gastronomic restaurants associated with French star chef Alain Ducasse’s Les Collectionneurs network. At the main restaurant Le 1862, Chef Pascal Lombard offers exceptional home-made cuisine centred around locally sourced produce such as black truffles, duck, strawberries and cheeses. Tasting menus are a must at this gastronomic gem, and the wine list is extensive and well-balanced.

The Chateau de la Treyne, meanwhile, rivals the fantastic castles of the Loire Valley when it comes to fairytale charm and high luxury. Situated on a rocky bluff overlooking rolling hillsides and the rushing Dordogne river, the turreted chateau was built between the 14th and 17th century and offers both history and sumptuous, palace hotel-level amenities. Enjoy the Michelin starred restaurant, gorgeous period rooms, royal-style gardens, and sweeping terrace overlooking the entire Dordogne riverside area. This would be an excellent choice for a honeymoon in France or an anniversary celebration.

Another excellent choice is the Hotel Plaza Madeleine in Sarlat, a charming hotel featuring elegantly decorated, comfortable rooms and suites, a gastronomic restaurant serving regional cusine, a wine and cocktail bar, and a spa complete with heated indoor pool.

Situated in a listed 17th-century residence in close reach of the Lascaux caves, the prestigious Hotel de Bouilhac is a luxurious refuge away from the crowds of tourists. The opulently appointed rooms nevertheless have a touch of rustic charm, with views over greenery and countryside. The hotel’s onsite restaurant Le Bouilhac offers more typical and eye-opening gourmet introductions to the cuisine of the Périgord, with traditional yet inventive dishes from Chef Christophe Maury.

Next, Le Vieux Logis in Trémolat is another local property that brings together luxury and authenticity with a touch of the rustic. With its 30 comfortable and elegant but simply decorated rooms, pleasant gardens, ivy-covered facade and traditional ambience, the Relais & Châteaux lodge has the atmosphere of an old French country house. The Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by Vincent Arnould is noteworthy for its savoir-faire, fresh local produce and inventive new twists on regional classics.

At the edge of Dordogne but still potentially worth a stay, finally, is the Chateau des Vigiers, a sprawling 16th-century estate boasting a large golf course and country club, Sothys spa with pools, Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by Chef Didier Casaguana and easy access to some of the region’s most extraordinary places.

Perigord Noir

Prehistoric cave art in the Dordogne

A t some point in remote prehistory, roughly 12,000 years ago, a group of men and women – no more than half a dozen, scientists believe – crawled into the labyrinth of Rouffignac cavern in the Dordogne's Vézère valley. Once in its deepest recess, they lay on their backs and, in flickering candlelight, started painting on the rock ceiling 3ft above them. More than 60 images of mammoths, horses and ibex were outlined, each animal depicted in simple, confident lines that reveal startling artistic talent.

This is the Great Ceiling of Rouffignac, one of the world's oldest and most beautiful art galleries. We have few clues as to who created it, though it was probably the work of the Cro-Magnons, the first members of Homo sapiens to settle in Europe 45,000 years ago and survivors of the Ice Age that later gripped the continent. Nor do we know why these artists picked such an inaccessible spot to display their genius – though fortunately it can be reached easily today. A tiny electric train runs from Rouffignac's entrance to the Great Ceiling, the floor of which has been lowered to allow visitors to gaze up at its wonders.

It is a stunning experience, one of many to be found in this remarkable locale. In the 25km of the Vézère valley between Montignac and Les Eyzies there are 15 caves – including Rouffignac, Lascaux and others – which have been rated Unesco World Heritage sites because of their prehistoric art. If you want to understand the minds of our forebears, and appreciate the critical role that art has played in our evolution – issues raised by the British Museum's superb exhibition, Ice Age Art , which closes on 2 June – then the Vézère is for you.

Perigord Noir

For good measure you can bike along its lanes, canoe on its rivers and enjoy the area's confit du canard , Bergerac wines, chèvre, walnut oil and truffles. We stayed, and ate, at the appropriately named Lascaux Hotel in Montignac. Rooms were clean and comfortable while the dinners – which included slabs of foie gras, red mullet fillets and veal with mushrooms – were first class. After a cave visit we sat outside a café in one of the area's delightful villages – Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère is particularly enchanting – and contemplated the wonders we had just witnessed over a beer and a glass of wine.

The good life was invented here, I suspect. Certainly you can appreciate why our species has hung around the Vézère – though standards were probably more basic in those early days. Our ancestors camped at cave entrances and enjoyed diets mainly made up of reindeer meat, to judge from the bones they left there.

Deep inside these caves, however, their minds moved to different matters and artists concentrated instead on the more majestic animals – mammoths and woolly rhinos – that then populated the Dordogne. These painters fully understood perspective and exploited rock bulges and crevices to create artwork that would have shifted and shimmered in the flickering lamps they carried.

The reason why they were created is obscure, however. Some scientists believe they may have enhanced rituals in which a clan's shaman made contact with other spiritual realms. Whatever the case, it is clear that by this stage in our evolution art was now of critical importance to our species – for these works were created by full-time artists who would have required food, clothing and shelter from their clan members in order to carry out their work. Visiting the end results, buried in these deep caverns, is an unforgettable experience – and a privilege.

Hightlights of the Vézère valley

Grotte de Rouffignac: The cavern train carries you past friezes of woolly rhinos, superbly rendered in black, and engravings of mammoths, gouged into soft clay-limestone walls by artists who used their fingers. The cavern is also peppered with hollows scratched by hibernating bears. However, the trip's pinnacle is the Great Ceiling. Covered by graffiti in the 19th century, the gallery has been fully restored. ( grottederouffignac.fr ; 00 33 5530 54171 )

Lascaux II: The original Lascaux cave, outside Les Eyzies, was discovered in September 1940 and contains more than 600 prehistoric coloured paintings of horses, deer and mammoths. Thousands flocked to see them, triggering changes to the cave's atmosphere that boosted the growth of algae and crystals on the artwork on its walls. In 1963 the cave was closed to the public and 20 years later an exact replica, Lascaux II, was opened. In addition to its vivid reproductions there are displays of the original artists' tools as well as the hollowed stones they used as candle holders. Intriguingly, wicks were made of juniper wood which burns with a white smoke that did not damage the cave's artwork. ( semitour.com ; 00 33 5535 19503 )

Grotte de Font-de-Gaume: This cave is the only one in France with coloured paintings that can still be visited by the public and is rated a "must" by British prehistoric art expert Paul Bahn . Parties are restricted to eight individuals, and the cave has tight, twisting corridors which require some squeezing. It is worth it – if nothing else for the cave's rare depiction of reindeer, a male nuzzling the face of a kneeling female, which is touching, deftly constructed and reveals not only the artistic skills of its creators but their considerable knowledge of animal behaviour and anatomy. ( eyzies.monuments-nationaux.fr ; 00 33 5530 68600 )

Abri de Cap Blanc: Another must, Cap Blanc is made up of series of bas-reliefs created by artists who took advantage of the topography of the rock wall to sculpt a frieze of horses of startling impact. In front of the main horse, archaeologists uncovered the body of a young woman. Some believe she could be one of the artists responsible for creating this incredible work.( eyzies.monuments-nationaux.fr; 00 33 5530 68600 ; all visits should be booked in advance.)

The best guide to the region's prehistoric sites is Cave Art: A Guide to the Decorated Ice Age Caves of Europe by Paul Bahn (Frances Lincoln, £16.99)

Robin McKie travelled courtesy of the Dordogne Tourist Board ( dordogne-perigord-tourisme.fr ) and stayed at the Lascaux hotel in Montignac ( hotel-lascaux.jimdo.com ; 00 33 5535 18281), which has double rooms from €69 a night. The Vézère valley is an hour's drive from Bergerac airport, which has daily flights to several cities in the UK with Flybe and Ryanair

A vast complex of caves near Montignac, Lascaux features over 600 wall paintings said to date back 17,000 years and was rightfully inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979 as part of the ‘Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley’. This extraordinarily well-preserved cave and its paintings are now protected however an impressive visitor center and replica caves have been developed to educate tourists and scientists from around the world. Get up close and personal with some medieval weaponry with a visit to the Chateau de Castelnaud. Initially erected as opposition to the Chateau de Beynac, Chateau de Castelnaud is a medieval fortress overlooking to Dordogne River.

The castle has had a ferocious history, from the 100 years War where it faced numerous hard-fought battles to its eventual abandonment before the French Revolution, which still enthralls visitors today with stories, tales, and weaponry from its height.

Include Chateau de Castelnaud in your itinerary today by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac is one of the most beautiful romantic gardens in all of France, perched above the Dordogne River and with stunning panoramic views across the valley. Flowing paths and winding hidden maze entertain you as you peacefully glide through the grand gardens and up to the 17th-century château.

For those with mobility issues, don’t worry: the provision of a buggy to navigate through the gardens and to the top of the property means no one needs to miss out on its spectacular views. Include Les Jardins de Marqueyssac in your itinerary by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

Visit the hightop commune of Rocamadour is an incredible day trip for any curious traveler looking for a journey back in time; with a lineage dating back to the Bronze Age.

A stunning manor house in the commune of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle close to the Chateau de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, the Chateau des Milandes served as a home for the lords of Caumont who preferred the elegant house and gardens to the cold, war-torn fortress.

Built in 1489, the manor house became home to the American singer and dancer after her rise to the pinnacle of the Parisian cabaret scene in the 1920s. Baker also played a covert role in the French Resistance and is beloved in the area, and France generally; the castle now stands as a dedication to her life. Include a tour of Chateau des Milandes in your itinerary by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

One of the best known and best-preserved medieval castles in the region, Chateau de Beynac is situated almost precariously in the commune of Beynac-et-Cazenac, in Dordogne.

The castle was initially built in the 12th-century atop sheer cliffs to provide a natural defense; a decision which seems ingenious with the hindsight of the many battles the structure has borne witness since.

While it’s a steep hike to the top, the views of the surrounding towns and valley are certainly worth the effort; include Chateau de Beynac in your private tour itinerary by clicking below.

Collonges-la-Rouge

Proclaimed as ‘The Most Beautiful Village of France’ Collonges-la-Rouge is a must-see for anyone on tour in the area. The village is built almost entirely with distinctive red sandstone – dating back to the 8th century – most of which are still standing today, and attract visitors from across the world.

One of our favorite parts of the village would have to be its traditional fresh marketplaces, offering visitors a glimpse back to a simpler (and in this case prettier) time. Get in touch today to start planning your tour of France by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

The limestone hills, oak forests and fertile riverbanks of the Dordogne are littered with elaborate chateaux, handsome clifftop towns and sturdy fortifications, indications of the region’s rich and complex history. In fact, these valleys have been inhabited since Paleolithic times and the cave paintings at Lascaux are among the world’s most celebrated. Along with the region’s scenic countryside, reputation for fine French gastronomy and relaxed pace of life, it makes the Dordogne worthy of your time. Our specialists have explored the main sights and the lesser-known ones, and they’ll carefully plan your trip to the Dordogne as an individual tailor-made experience to match your preferences.

Whether you’re on the trail of fine wines and local produce, interested in the prehistoric art of Rouffignac and Pech-Merle, intrigued by troglodyte villages or Renaissance-era chateaux, our specialists can help you plan your trip, using their first-hand knowledge to guide you on the best places to see in the Dordogne. Make a base in the handsome medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, canoe down the river, pore over market stalls brimming with local goat’s cheese, walnuts and prunes, or have a guided wine tasting at a local vineyard. The Dordogne is a microcosm of almost everything France has to offer.

"Jean brought history alive, yes, even history dating back 35,000 years" - Dolores M, Pennsylvania

"We could not have had a better guide" - GGNZ12, New Zealand

Very knowledgeable guide brings history to life "Our four days with Jean were the highlight of our trip to France. Jean guided us to the most fascinating places in the Sarlat region and breathed life into the Middle Ages. Not only is she an excellent guide, but also she is a simply delightful travel companion. I wish we could do the whole trip again!" lizzie88Colorado

Fantastic Guide and Teacher "She was incredibly helpful in narrowing down what we should see and adding some sights that we had not thought of. As a result of her deep knowledge and obvious love of the area and its history, she was able to explain everything we saw and put it into the broader perspective of history. So she was not just a great guide but a thoughtful teacher." Dobson W, Minnesota

Unforgettable Perigord Noir "Perfect. She set up an itinerary for us which turned out to be the highlight of our trip. She is a kindred soul, easy going personality and an excellent history teller. We highly recommend Jean, she made our short stay an unforgettable one. We would not have seen so much of the Perigord Noir area if it wasn’t for Jean’s love for the place." Angela G.

cave tours in dordogne france

My name is Jean Laroche and I come from New Zealand. I have lived in this part of France with my French husband and family for more than 20 years. When I first arrived I was blown away by the beauty of the region. I loved the delicate red poppies which pushed their way out of the cracks in the stone walls at springtime and the stark silhouettes cut out by the medieval fortresses strategically placed high above the river valleys so many centuries ago. The luscious green countryside reminded me of my home in rural New Zealand but with the added marks of centuries of civilization. I learnt French and, being naturally curious learnt about the people and explored the place they call the “Périgord Noir” (the south eastern part of the Dordogne). I discovered that prehistoric man had been equally attracted here, well before me, but probably more by the generous nature and safe shelter provided by the ledges and caves in the limestone valley walls than by poppies coming out of cracks. Come and let me share my knowledge and the insight I have acquired into the regional culture with you. I'll help you discover the historic sites, the natural beauty and the hidden treasures off the beaten path. I'll pick you up at your hotel, your bed and breakfast or holiday home and guide you to do either one of my preplanned circuits or through a circuit which we have tailor-made together according to your wishes.

Our tours are all for a full day (9am-6pm) with pick up and drop off at your accommodation in the region. Contact us for a quote.

From Les Eyzies to Sarlat

Since today is a short ride but your destination has plenty to offer, we recommend getting an early start to give you plenty of time to visit the very charming town of Sarlat . This town with its cobbled streets, old roofs, and warm stone walls give an exceptional heritage. Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. If you happen to be there on Wednesday or Saturday morning, do not miss the wonderful local market.

You can decide to ride a longer distance (with more elevation) with a longer option that goes by the Chateau of Commarque (open to public), facing his rival the Chateau de Laussel (private).

Distance : 24 Km (14 mi) or 29 km (18mi)

Elevation : 385 m or 580m
