Hell of a Cruise review – a terrifying documentary that will make you mad

review-hell-of-a-cruise-peacock-documentary-film

This review of the Peacock original documentary film Hell of a Cruise does not contain spoilers.

READ: everything we know about Hell of a Cruise.

In January of 2020, amid the COVID outbreak, people boarded the Diamond Princess cruise ship thinking they were on the verge of relaxing on their vacation. That was until they became prisoners on this floating ship, worried about whether or not they would ever get off. As someone who loves going on cruises, I am terrified to watch this documentary.

We briefly introduce some people about to set sail on the Diamond Princess cruise. It was a seventeen-day cruise, and these people were ready to experience their vacation. The chatter around the outbreak of COVID was around, but most passengers weren’t concerned about it.

I could not believe how these cruise lines handled these cruises. They did not stop running through the early stages of the pandemic. Also, refusing to refund anyone that didn’t want to board for safety reasons. Instead, the cruise lines would promise the guest on the phone that they would take plenty of precautions for all passengers.

One of the things that stood out the most about the documentary was the amount of footage they had from within the ship because people filmed while onboard. So you got a very personal look at the happenings on the ship and how it escalated. So you go from footage of people having the time of their life to the MASS chaos that followed. It was easily the best part of the documentary because you can hear anyone talk about something that went down, but to see it is a whole different thing.

The editors of this documentary do a brilliant job of making us feel the same claustrophobic feeling these passengers were going through. I give so much credit to the filmmakers for how you feel like you are watching a horror movie at times, but they smack you back down to reality to understand these people went through all of this. For much of this film, I was in disbelief at how mishandled this entire thing was.

Overall, Hell of a Cruise was a haunting yet fascinating look at one of the craziest stories from this COVID outbreak. It was like watching a horror movie unfold but with real-life consequences. The documentary won’t be for everyone as this is still fresh on people’s minds, but I recommend checking it out.

Peacock documentary Hell of a Cruise puts us on board cruise ships in early 2020, which – well, you’ve no doubt assumed it wasn’t a relaxing vacation-type atmosphere, and you’d be right AND wrong. The film chronicles how the ships became floating petri dishes for Covid-19 , and asserts that the Carnival Corporation, which kept its cruises going despite surely knowing better, is partly to blame for the virus’ global spread. Now let’s see if it’s a convincing argument.

HELL OF A CRUISE : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: A man’s on board a Princess cruise, shooting a selfie video. “I’m making it” – he pauses – “just in case.” He’s worried. Passengers are infected with Covid. Everyone on board is under quarantine – and we’ll soon see that healthy people are stuck in their cabins just like sick people and the ship’s crew is going door to door with food and amenities. We see some promotional fodder for Princess Cruises, and overtop we hear voices say, “It was a guaranteed dumpster fire” and that the ships were “singularly effective at propagating Covid.”

We meet four men, college students, who got a great deal on tickets for the Diamond Princess, a 15-day excursion through South Asia that included multiple stops and a Chinese New Year celebration. It was the final hurrah before graduation. The ship left Jan. 20, 2020. News broke that China was enforcing a national lockdown in order to contain Covid outbreaks; the Diamond Princess made its scheduled Hong Kong stop and there, a passenger disembarked and later tested positive. The New Year celebration happened inside the ship instead of on land. The cruise continued to Vietnam, where passengers disembarked for a cave tour, and we see throngs of people crowded together inside the gorgeous natural setting. Maybe the guys shouldn’t have gone on the excursion, but information was sparse and sketchy.

Of course, the cruise line makes money on its excursions, and thus begins a classic narrative: the corporation sacrificing the well-being of its passengers and crew for the sake of the bottom line. We likely already know what happened to the Diamond Princess – it was stuck in a dock in Yokohama, Japan for weeks as Covid cases ticked up and up and up. Meanwhile, even as the Diamond became a floating hell, Princess’ parent company, Carnival, went full speed ahead with other cruises, assuring concerned customers of their safety, and not allowing refunds, of course.

We meet people who took Princess cruises in January and February of 2020, among them serial cruisers; some of whom would go several times a year. As their vacations became debacles, they used their phones to document some of the stuff that was going on: On the Diamond, we see eerily quiet spaces that would normally be bustling with partying passengers, and masked crew members delivering food through empty hallways. On others, group events were canceled, but bars and casinos remained operational – you know, the stuff that costs money, one commentator says. Meanwhile, higher-ups in the U.S. government argue about what to do about the Americans on these cruises, while Carnival management almost certainly knows many things it could and should do, and hardly does any of it.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Eighteen months ago, HBO released The Last Cruise , a more tightly focused documentary on this very subject. It documents some of the exact same incidents and even interviews some of the exact same cruise passengers (possibly because they had lots of good personal footage of their experiences).

Performance Worth Watching: Infectious disease specialist Dr. Michael Callahan shares his voice of reason with a weary tone and demeanor that is all too relatable when it comes to discussion of any pandemic-related topic.

Memorable Dialogue: Dr. Kentaro Iwata of Kobe University assesses Carnival’s strategy for handling Covid outbreaks: “I don’t think there was any strategy.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: The Last Cruise is only 40 minutes long, but its concision is a boon – it focuses solely on the people aboard the Diamond Princess, and illustrates a clear frontline worker/privileged class dichotomy between crew and passengers on board. Hell of a Cruise takes a bigger, broader approach to the topic, roping corporate and political bungling and malfeasance into the narrative, reaching a conclusion that’s harshly critical of decisions made at the top. And to name names, that includes an especially pointy finger pointing at Carnival CEO Arnold Donald – who, per a postscript title card, made $10 and $13 million in 2020 and 2021 respectively – as well as criticism of mixed messaging from President Trump and Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Hell of a Cruise director Nick Quested’s attempt to cover multiple components of a complex scenario results in a scattered narrative. In one moment, he touches on the sketchy business practices of cruise lines who set up base outside the U.S. so they can avoid taxes, hire grossly underpaid laborers as crew and, crucial to this story, not have to follow the government’s health guidelines. In the next moment, he’s in a tiny windowless cabin with a family of four who’s stuck inside for weeks. He frequently broadens and narrows his focus, and it can be a herky-jerky experience even when the content is revelatory.

But the overall picture is wholly damning of the Carnival Corporation. Especially egregious: The company concocting a hashtag, #HangInThereDiamondPrincess, to boost morale aboard the quarantined ship. We even see crew on another cruise, the Ruby Princess, cheer while holding up banners of encouragement bearing that hashtag, even though their ship is on the cusp of the very same Covid crisis. Carnival saw a public-relations problem more than a health problem; cue a commentator pointing out how the White House treated it exactly the same way. The doc concludes with statistics showing how the company’s obfuscation, denial and outright greed ultimately contributed significantly to the spread of Covid on a global scale. When the movie’s over, you can’t help but ponder all the what-ifs.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Hell of a Cruise could use a little more focused, detailed approach. But as a wide-ranging look at a key moment in the Covid pandemic, it’s compelling and informative.

National Geographic channel will debut Making the Disney Wish: Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship at 9 PM on December 24, 2022.

NatGeo Making Disney Wish 2022 Banner

Not much has else has been revealed about the Making of the Disney Wish documentary special other than this brief description found in a cable company’s DVR scheduling guide:

At a shipyard on Germany’s North Sea, a marvel of modern engineering is taking shape; hundreds of construction workers, engineers, architects, designers, animators, cast and crew are transforming 144,000 tons of steel.

Making The Disney Wish National Geographic Documentary 2022

From what I’ve been told, a small documentary filming crew was onboard to document the construction of the Disney Wish while the ship was in Germany, The Netherlands, and the transatlantic crossing.

Check out the teaser trailer here which was included in the Disney Parks Blog posting on December 20th .

I am not sure if, or when Making the Disney Wish: Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship will arrive on Disney+ or Hulu (Seems Disney+ would be an ideal spot). I reached out to Disney+ and National Geographic earlier this month, but I’ve not heard back. Not the most ideal time to debut this special, but it will pair nicely with Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade which will include a spot filmed last Friday onboard the Disney Wish.

“Nearly ¾ of the surface of the earth is water,” says Lynn Elmhirst, producer and host of World’s Greatest Cruises , “And so many of the world’s great cultures and civilizations grew up from the oceans, seas and rivers. World’s Greatest Cruises celebrates our ages-old connection to the waves, and instinct to explore our world by water. It is truly one of the most authentic ways to discover the history, people and natural wonders of the world.”

Season 1 of World’s Greatest Cruises , which launched in 2022, has reached audiences in over 60 markets nationwide on PBS stations. In Season 2, viewers will experience fresh episodes showcasing a range of ships navigating rivers, seas, and oceans across the globe, including the Arctic and Antarctic, the tropics, Europe, and the Americas.

SEASON 2 EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS

In Search of Emperor Penguins on an Antarctic Expedition Cruise (Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 pm)

Host Lynn Elmhirst sails aboard the Scenic Eclipse to the bottom of the world, where zodiac landings take her to breeding colonies of several types of penguins. But it takes a helicopter tour off the ship to attempt a distant ice landing in search of the largest, rarest and most elusive penguins: Emperor penguins. She also encounters elephant seals, learns the secrets of ice from an expert – and drinks cocktails made with Antarctic glacier ice! And takes a South ‘polar plunge’ into icy Antarctic waters!

Yachtsman’s Ports on a Caribbean Cruise (Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 pm)

Host Lynn Elmhirst goes off the beaten path, sailing aboard the mega-yacht Emerald Azzurra on a ‘yachtsman’s itinerary’ of the Caribbean. She discovers smaller islands where larger ships can’t sail: from exploring a natural wonder seaside maze of boulders and caves on British Virgin Gorda, to hiking in a tropical park, tasting the abundant local lobster in Tortola, and qualifying as a rum master in St. Kitts, she cruises the Caribbean in a new and intimate way, with marina days and the yachting lifestyle on board, and a private beach barbecue on a picturesque shore.

Christmas Market River Cruise on the Rhine (Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 pm)

Host Lynn Elmhirst celebrates holiday traditions in their birthplace sailing on the Viking Sygyn along the Rhine River through Switzerland, Germany and France. She discovers the world’s largest Christmas store, full of hand-made ornaments, and talks with its founder about the spirit of the season; explores Christmas markets, each with its own unique character, from quaint mediaeval towns in the Black Forest, to an urban winter festival market in Cologne. On board the river cruise ship, she tries her hand at traditional baking and blowing glass Christmas ornaments with a local artisan glassblower.

Iceland & Greenland Cultural Expedition Cruise (Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 pm)

Host Lynn Elmhirst discovers hands-on over a thousand years of human stories of seafaring cultures while sailing aboard the Seabourn Venture in Iceland and Greenland: fermented shark on a quirky food tour of Reykjavik, an entire walrus skull carved by an indigenous Greenlandic artisan, kayaking in the waters where the vessel got its name, walking in the footsteps of Erik the Red in the world heritage site of his settlement in Greenland, and participating in the cruise line’s own culture and traditions: caviar sail away parties at a glacier, a pop-up champagne bar on a zodiac in an iceberg field, and a polar plunge into the Arctic Ocean!

The South of France on a Rhone River Cruise (Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 pm)

Host Lynn Elmhirst sails through one of the most beloved destinations in the world aboard the Emerald Liberte on the Rhone River, passing through three famous wine regions, and experiencing over 2000 years of history. She discovers renowned wines and wineries, scenic sailing past chateaux and riverside vineyards, tastings of famous local delicacies, and the chance to burn off some of the indulgence with hikes of storied vineyards and e-cycling tours along the riverbanks and into medieval villages of one of the most picturesque regions of France.

Exploring the Great Lakes on an Expedition Cruise (Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 pm)

Host Lynn Elmhirst is cruising close to home, sailing aboard the Viking Octantis on an expedition cruise of the newest – and nearest – expedition cruising frontier. This cruise sails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and calls in Mackinac Island, Michigan, famous for its historic, summer resort and horse-drawn carriage lifestyle, en route to Canadian waters. Lynn explores North America’s “Inland Seas” via zodiac and kayak tours of the forested and rocky shoreline. She discovers natural wonders, explores under the surface in one of the cruise ship’s two submersibles, and delves into local indigenous and fur trader history in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Natural Wonders of Greenland & Iceland on an Expedition Cruise (Air Date TBA)

Host Lynn Elmhirst explores Arctic fjords, glaciers, icebergs, waterfalls, volcanos and geysers sailing aboard an expedition cruise on the Seabourn Venture. In Iceland, she takes the only tour inside a glacier in the, sips champagne during a tour of Arctic waters on one of the ship’s submarines, watches as expedition crew members map uncharted waters of a Greenlandic bay and send the data back to the captain on the ship’s bridge for real-time navigation use, and is inducted into the Order of the ‘Bluenose,’ the cruise line’s ceremony for first-time sailors crossing the Arctic circle.

Wine and Culinary Rhine River Cruise (Air Date TBA)

Host Lynn Elmhirst tastes and sips her way through 4 countries sailing aboard the Viking Sygyn along one of the main maritime transportation routes in Europe. She learns how to make Switzerland’s famous cheese fondue, meets a female winemaker in France’s Alsace region, visits the ‘Cathedral of Wine’ at the oldest Riesling winery in the world, where there’s a tasting by candlelight! On board the river cruise ship, she learns how to make ‘spirited’ local Rudesheim coffee, toasts an Oktoberfest dinner and wonders at the sight of over 30 castles along the riverbanks of the ‘Romantic Rhine.’

The White Continent: an Antarctic Expedition Cruise (Air Date TBA)

Host Lynn Elmhirst learns that the so-called ‘White Continent’ is actually rich with color, textures, sounds and tastes while sailing aboard the Scenic Eclipse. She boards zodiacs to colonies of seals and penguins, thriving in the icy desert climate, walks off the ship onto ‘fast ice,’ kayaks among vivid blue icebergs, flies high above glaciers in one of the ship’s two helicopters, and boards the ship’s submarine to see wildlife under Antarctic Ocean waves. On the bridge with the ship’s captain, she also learns about navigation in icy waters.

A Legendary Transatlantic Crossing (Air Date TBA)

Host Lynn Elmhirst sails on British cruise line Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2 on the legendary route between New York and Southampton, England, following in the wake of celebrities, royalty and VIP’s in the golden era of ocean liners. It’s an entire week at sea with no ports of call, instead immersed in quintessential British lifestyle: ship-wide afternoon tea, pub lunches, Royal Mail, the biggest library and planetarium at sea, and gala evenings. She visits with the kennel master and some four-legged passengers in the only kennels at sea! In London, Lynn drops into the only studio in the world still hand-making globes.

The series is available to stream on demand with added member benefit, WPBS Passport . Visit https://watch.wpbstv.org/show/worlds-greatest-cruises/ to watch online or download the free PBS app.
