Lisa Lampanelli has been known for more than a quarter-century as Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean. Heralded as "more than a standup -- a stando

Lisa Lampanelli has been known for more than a quarter-century as Comedy’s Lovable Queen of Mean. Heralded as “more than a standup — a standout,” by comedy legend Jim Carrey, and called “a true original and a brilliant comedy mind who’ll steal the show every time” by her hero Howard Stern, Lampanelli is known for saying things that most people are afraid to think. Her raunchy, gut-busting performances are wildly popular at theaters across the U.S. and Canada.

Lampanelli’s fifth stand-up special, 2015’s Back to the Drawing Board , proved the insult comic was new, improved, and funnier than ever. The EPIX special was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album of the Year and showed off Lisa’s radically different look after having lost more than 100 pounds with the help of gastric sleeve surgery. That weight loss and her love of theatre, inspired her to write Stuffed : A Big-Boned, Skinny-Ass, All-You-Can-Laugh New Play . Having been every size from 2 to 26, Lampanelli has firsthand knowledge of the food and body-image struggle.

When the first version of Stuffed debuted in the fall of 2016 at the WP Theater under the tutelage of Managing Director Lisa McNulty, the New York Times said “ Stuffed offers laughs, and even a bit of insight . . . Lampanelli’s strongest, funniest and most affecting work” and the Hollywood Reporter echoed their sentiments, calling the play “very funny and affecting.”

Stuffed features Lampanelli’s famously irreverent voice, signature wit, and an extra-large scoop of razor-sharp insight into the crazy-making world of our relationships with food. Its extended off-Broadway run begins on October 5 in a new production at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43 rd Street Downstairs). It is directed by Jackson Gay and stars Lampanelli, along with co-stars Nikki Blonsky (New Line Cinema’s Hairspray ), Marsha Stephanie Blake (NYTW’s Othello, Orange is the New Black ) and Eden Malyn ( House of Lies, Orange is the New Black ).  Opening night for the production is scheduled for October 19.

The four characters in Stuffed are a lifelong dieter, a bulimic, a confident overweight gal, and a permanent size-zero. With Lisa onstage, alongside this talented cast, Stuffed doesn’t shy away from tough questions like: Is eating an ice cream sandwich in the shower as emotionally fulfilling as it sounds? When it comes to jeans, what’s better — muffin top or camel toe? And, if Oprah, the most powerful person in the world, can’t conquer her food issues, what can the rest of us do but laugh as we try?

Lampanelli also addresses these subjects and more in her own podcast, Get Stuffed with Lisa Lampanelli . The weekly, hour-long podcast launches the week of September 11 and focuses on the comedic actress’s interest in healthy lifestyle, food, weight, and body image, as well as other issues that are near and dear to her heart. Lampanelli and her co-host, comedian Mike Morse, discuss stories in the news relating to these subjects, as well as other topics that touch on those issues. During the podcast, Lampanelli also fields questions, gives “tough love”-style advice, and features special guests, including weekly correspondent, Sirius OutQ and Daily Show alumnus Frank Decaro.

Lampanelli became a household name when she joined 17 other celebrities on the fifth season of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice , hosted by current president Donald Trump. The fifth installment of the show, with the largest-ever lineup of famous faces competing for charities of their choice, was a ratings bonanza for NBC. As a final-four contestant, Lisa raised more than $130,000 for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. She also starred as a regular on Bounty Hunters , CMT’s first-ever animated series, and guest starred on a hilarious episode of CBS’s 2 Broke Girls , helmed by Sex and the City creator, Michael Patrick King.

Lampanelli’s rise to the top of the comedy food chain began in 2002 when she was the only female comedian invited to skewer Chevy Chase on the NY Friars Club Comedy Central Roast . She soon became known as the “Queen of the Roasts”, going on to lambaste such names as Pamela Anderson, Jeff Foxworthy, William Shatner, Flava Flav, David Hasselhoff and, most recently, Donald Trump. Due to her success as a roaster, in 2009, Lisa was asked to serve as Roastmaster for the highly rated Comedy Central Roast of friend and fellow comic, Larry the Cable Guy.

One of the few white comedians to perform on BET’s Comic View and a recurring guest on The Wendy Williams Show, Lampanelli has clearly cemented her huge crossover appeal. In January 2007, Lisa’s second one-hour special, Dirty Girl , debuted on Comedy Central and Warner Bros. Records, and reached #4 on the charts. Soon thereafter, Dirty Girl was nominated for a Grammy Award for 2007’s Best Comedy Album of the Year.

Lampanelli reached new comedic heights with her 2009 HBO comedy special, Long Live the Queen and, that same year, released her autobiography, Chocolate, Please: My Adventures in Food, Fat and Freaks (Harper Collins). She has also been a monthly contributor for the Women column in Playboy Magazine and has been a writer for the blog for Kripalu, the world-renowned yoga and meditation retreat center.

On the feature film side, Lisa appeared in the David Chase-directed feature film, Not Fade Away . She also appeared in Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector and had a featured role in Delta Farce , opposite Bill Engvall, Larry the Cable Guy, and D.J. Quall. One of the stars of the hilarious feature film documentary, The Aristocrats , Lampanelli also played a more maternal version of herself in the Owen Wilson vehicle, Judd Apatow’s Drillbit Taylor.

She currently resides in New York City and Connecticut.

LISA LAMPANELLI

LISA LAMPANELLI

Lisa Lampanelli is known as Comedy’s Lovable Queen of Mean. This equal opportunity offender is a regular on Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite radio shows, and she has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Chelsea Lately,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Dr. Oz Show” and “Good Morning America.” She was also a member of the cast of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” Season 5.

In 2009, Lisa entered the ranks of comic greats and premiered her first ever one-hour HBO comedy special, “Long Live the Queen,” to tremendous ratings. That same year, her autobiography, “Chocolate, Please: My Adventures in Food, Fat and Freaks,” hit bookstores to critical acclaim.

Lisa is well-known for her many Comedy Central and Friars Club roasts.   She has lambasted Jeff Foxworthy, Pamela Anderson, David Hasselhoff, Betty White, Donald Trump and Flavor Flav to name a few. Plus, she was honored to serve as roastmaster on the Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy.

Lisa’s second one-hour special, “Dirty Girl,” was nominated for a Grammy Award for 2007′s Best Comedy Album of the Year. And in 2012, Lisa was thrilled to be cast as Aunt Josie in the highly anticipated feature film debut from “Sopranos” creator David Chase entitled, “Not Fade Away,” starring James Gandolfini. Lisa also starred as a series regular on “Bounty Hunters,” CMT’s first-ever animated show. Currently, Lisa is making a departure from her signature “insult” comedy with her first developmental theater production, Fat Girl Interrupted, to show a side of Comedy’s Lovable Queen of Mean that few would guess exists.

King of All Media, Howard Stern:

“Lisa will steal the show every time, whether it’s on my radio program or on any stage anywhere doing stand up. I love Lisa and so should you…a true original and a brilliant comedy mind.”

Jim Carrey:

“By boldly poking fun at everyone, Lisa releases us from a prison of cultural guilt. She’s more than a standup. She’s a standout.”

Losers With A Dream with Lisa Lampanelli

Live podcast taping and q&a with lisa lampanelli.

Comedians Beau McDowell and Nick Scopoletti suck at dating, suck at jobs, and suck at most things in life. But they’re great at talking about their feelings and taking advice from their mentor, the former Queen of Mean Lisa Lampanelli.

Lisa lampanelli’s sit down & shut up.

Lisa Lampanelli’s SIT DOWN & SHUT UP! is a hilarious evening of stories, insight, and questionable advice from the former Queen of Mean, Lisa Lampanelli. A left-turn from the insult comedy she’d long been known for, Lisa has created a revealing and revelatory evening by letting it all hangout. From her ups-and-down with dieting and body image to her shocking very public retirement from insult comedy, in SIT DOWN & SHUT UP!, Lisa tells all! Part sit-down interview, part storytelling show, and – yes, you knew it had to happen – a little bit of a roast, SIT DOWN & SHUT UP! is Lisa’s chance to come clean. Sure, she’s not calling people names anymore or taking celebrities to task for just being eminently roast-able, but Lisa has no problem being way too real. Her yo-yo-ing weight, her bariatric surgery, her divorces – yep, there’s TWO of ‘em – and her stepping back from standing up are all dissected during this funny, fearless evening. Plus, Lisa, ever the helpful hero that she is, will answer audience questions, coach willing participants, and hopefully help people at the same time. From the Queen of Mean to the Queen of Meaning, Lisa will do it all in one rollicking performance.

Comedian Lisa Lampanelli's New Look And Lease On Life

By Kiko Martinez on Wed, Feb 18, 2015 at 7:00 am

She's lost over 100lbs. since having weight-loss surgery in 2012, but stand-up comedian and self-described "Queen of Mean" Lisa Lampanelli still has a big, fat attitude and likes to flaunt it on stage. Currently on her Leaner Meaner tour, Lampanelli, 53, will swing by the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on February 21. During an interview with the Current, she talked about what it's like to be skinny, if she thinks she will ever lose her edge, and having a show possibly hit Broadway.

The last time I interviewed you was in February 2013 and you had already lost a lot of weight. For this tour, it looks like you've repackaged your image and style, too. Would you consider this a rebranding of sorts?

No, I've never been calculating in what I do. I've never thought, "Oh, I think I'm going to reinvent myself." I lost the weight and now I get to dress better and wear better clothes and have fun with it.

Explain the hair.

The hair was basically just me getting mad at having to get blowouts all the time and having a fight with my ex-husband who only liked long hair. One day I got in a little bitch mood and went and cut it all off.

You've always struck me as somebody with a thick skin, but in past interviews you've said you wanted to lose weight because you didn't want to be the butt of the joke anymore. Were those jokes upsetting?

Well, when it comes to the [Comedy Central] roasts, those were not hurtful because most of them are usually jokes that are well written. But nobody likes to know there's something they can fix about themselves, but are powerless to fix it unless they take drastic measures. If someone has a big nose, for instance, it probably hurts them to hear that. I don't think it was the main reason I got surgery. I did it because I wanted to live longer and be healthy and have a lot more energy.

What have you learn about the thin culture now that you're a part of it?

I learned that people still find things to pick on you about. I talk to thin women and sometimes they aren't even happy in a size zero or a size two. That's crazy to me because I used to be a size 24. I'm thrilled to death to be in single digits. Nobody seems to be happy where they are.

What kind of response have you received from your overweight fans, especially those who felt a connection to you because they saw you as someone they could identify with?

They still do identify with me. A lot of them ask me for advice now. They know that I've been there and had to struggle. They know how hard it is to be overweight. It's not easy when you walk down the aisle of an airplane and everybody looks at you and thinks, "I hope that person isn't sitting next to me." That hurts your feelings. I think they can still identify with me after 32 years of struggle.

Does getting leaner really mean you've become meaner?

I think on stage it's the same. I haven't lost any of my edge. I mean, I do like to earn a living! Off stage I'm nicer than ever because I'm happier with myself. There's a one-person show I'm developing that is not insult comedy. But I'm never giving that part up. If anything I'll get even edgier as I get older like Joan Rivers and Don Rickles. I don't think I'll ever change even if I become a born-again Christian.

Is that one-woman show going to Broadway?

I got two Broadway offers I just couldn't do because of scheduling, but I think that's where it's headed. It felt really nice when they asked me to do it. It was like getting asked to the prom by the quarterback.

How is it different from your insult comedy?

Well, I'm addicted to the laugh so there is still going to be eight laughs per minute. But it's more storytelling. There are about four or five stories I tell that are more meaningful and emotional. You can sneak some of those moments in if the show is funny enough.

Do you think you could've done a show like that 10 years ago?

No. I think you work up to whatever you're ready for. In five years who knows what I'll be ready to do. I had to work up to this. I had to be brave enough to do this and that just came recently.

You've done a handful of Comedy Central roasts over the years. What do you think about them roasting Justin Bieber in March?

He'd be a great subject. Comedy Central is a business, so they want somebody who people are interested in – somebody people either love or hate. You're going to get every teenage girl who still loves him to watch. You're going to get every person on the planet who hates him to watch. It's a great idea. There's a lot to make fun of. He was a joke before he was badly behaved, so now it's even better.

You'll be in San Antonio the night before the Academy Awards. What did you think about the fact that all the nominees in the acting categories where white this year?

Well, I could joke around and say that they had 12 Years a Slave last year so that should hold them over for a while, but I won't. You know who was awesome was that Asian guy who played Kim Jong-un [in The Interview]. I want someone to say, "Enough of these black people complaining! How about getting some Asian complaints?"

Comedians have won Oscars in the past. Even Monique won a few years ago. Do you think you might have some of those dramatic chops to exercise some day?

Probably not. I mean, I think comedians are great actors. Most of them are better at dramatic acting than they are at comedic acting. If you're a great standup, you've got a lot of angst inside. That translates really well to drama. You know, maybe someday. I have no interest in it right now. Maybe if I got a call saying that I got the role as Miss Hannigan in Annie I would do it. That actually sounds like fun.

  • About The Show

It’s the end of 2020, and Lisa Lampanelli is lost.

Having toiled for more than 30 years on her dream -- to become the world’s best insult comic -- Lisa had a single purpose, an obsession. Then, in November 2018, she walked away from it all, with some money in the bank, a house she didn’t really love, and another dream: to become a life coach and help people achieve THEIR very own dreams.

Great plan, huh?

Well, maybe not. Fast-forward two years, and things haven’t worked out exactly as Lisa had planned. Instead of juggling the self-help book deal and full schedule of coaching clients she had imagined, Lisa is completely, utterly and, amazingly to her, without a rudder. Her days consist of Netflix binges, eating foods she shouldn’t, complaining on the phone, and trying to figure out how it all went so wrong. She had left the world of standup BY CHOICE, hadn’t she? She was supposed to transition into a new career, wasn’t she? I mean, the phrase “From the Queen of Mean to the Queen of Meaning” was just too good NOT to work. But alas, it hadn’t.

Two years after retiring, Lisa is the one thing she never thought she’d be: irrefutably, inarguably, unmistakably IRRELEVANT. And it’s anything but comfortable.

In her new solo show, “Lisa Lampanelli: Irrelevant!,” the former comedian reveals all about her later-in-life path to find relevance. From trying hobbies that imploded to becoming a chronic meddler to adopting her parents’ personae, Lisa will share her humorous take on her struggles to cobble together a life with her career-less self at the center. The ultimately hopeful journey in “Lisa Lampanelli: Irrelevant!” will resonate with audience members who have felt unmoored in their own post-pandemic, post-career, and post-relevance world.

The Queen of Mean returns!

Lisa Lampanelli Lisa Lampanelli

Why see Lisa Lampanelli?

Not for the easily offended.

No one is safe from Lisa Lampanelli! The Connecticut-born comedian has been insulting everyone under the sun since the early 90s, and she's just getting started. Nicknamed the 'Queen of Mean', Lisa began her career in the New York club circuit before getting her big break at The New York Friar's Club roast of Chevy Chase, and has continued to hone her craft as one of the country's most vociferous, outspoken and outrageously rude comedians on the circuit.

Also a best-selling author and movie actress, Grammy-nominee Lampanelli is one of the most scintillating and shocking stand-up experiences you can have! A keen spokesperson for body positivity, she recently released her debut play of her own struggles with weight, entitled Stuffed. One of the few white comedians to perform on BET's Comic View, she has also won audiences in the LGBTQ+ community, challenging stereotypes and bigotry where she sees it.
