SKIING IN JAPAN

Why ski Japan? R eliable powder snow, spectacular scenery, natural hot springs, night skiing, culture and fantastic cuisine just to name a few reasons. There are many regions you can ski in Japan. Hokkaido is the coldest and most northern Japanese island and receives some of the best snow there is. Honshu is the main island of Japan and features more than 349 ski resorts.

The most popular resort on Hokkaido is Niseko, a resort well-known with skiers and snowboarders throughout the world. Hirafu Village is the main village of Niseko with lots of restaurants, shops and nightlife. Furano is one of Japans most famous ski resorts, although relatively unknown outside Japan. After a big snow fall there is often untracked powder for days. Rusutsu is a highlight for powder seekers with its fall line tree skiing easily accessed straight off lifts. Tomamu is one of Japan’s best family ski resorts with extensive beginner and intermediate terrain and some excellent tree skiing to keep powder hunters happy. The resort has a wave pool, ice village and multitude of restaurants.

The main island of Honshu is home to Hakuba with 9 ski areas accessing over 200 runs and offers everything from gentle beginner slopes to steeps, bumps and long groomers and of course plenty of fresh powder. While in Hakuba take a break from the snow to see the snow monkeys at Jigokundani Hot Springs. The resort of Nozawa Onsen combines great skiing, history, charm, tradition and hospitality all blended together in one wonderful location. The village is famous for more than 30 public hot springs dotted throughout the village. Shiga Kogen is the largest ski area in Honshu with 21 interlinking ski areas and 80 kilometers of trails. Myoko Kogen is perfect for those looking for an authentic Japanese experience and is made up of 10 different ski areas largely linked together by shuttle bus.

DAY 1 PICK UP AT AIRPORT

On arrival to airport, your tour host will meet you at the airport 8am Haneda or 8:30pm Narita and transfer directly to your accommodation. Upon check in, your tour host will issue you with your room keys, lift tickets and take you through the ski shop to collect your pre-booked equipment. This is also a good opportunity to purchase any discounted ski equipment.

Kick start your days and power up with a bite to eat with your daily included continental breakfast. *Daily breakfast not included for apartment guests* *After breakfast you will need to let your host know where you intend to ski for the day & dine in the evening*

SKIING Take advantage of the massive powder dumps Japan is renowned for & make the most of your lift pass. With an average snowfall of over 11m per season, get your shred on and experience the epic terrain offered with your lift pass. After a hard day of skiing, make sure to relax in the Onsen on-site at Hakuba Gondola & Madarao Hotel.

DAY 8 (LAST DAY)

On your last day you will checkout & be transferred back to Haneda or Narita Airport.

Japan isn’t all about the skiing. There is a whole lot of culture, food, language and good times to soak up. That’s why we give you guys the option of getting amongst what Japan has to offer, and lets be serious, your legs will need a rest after some glorious Japanese powder. For any other on ground requirements ask your tour host who would be happy to help. They speak English and Japanese and have over 15 collective years experience in Japan.

Hakuba is widely known as being a first class international resort with some of the best ski/board terrain and snowfall in all of Japan. The Hakuba Valley is a huge expanse of 9 ski resorts offering an incredible variety of terrain and exploring for skiers and snowboarders alike. Whether you want the steepest runs in Japan, tons of dry powder, terrain parks, half pipes or you’re looking for some easy ski runs, Hakuba has it all.The host of the 1998 Winter Olympics and boasting over 1080m of vertical skiing, Hakuba is equivalent to many of the more widely known resorts of North America.

ABOUT MADARAO

Madarao ski resort has over 13m of snow falling annually & impressive snow walls on the drive into the village which sets the scene. The Madarao & Tangram combined lift pass offers 23 lifts catering for beginners up to advance powder tree skiing. Not yet a main stream ski resort to Westerners & well renowned for its powder, Madarao offers a true Japanese ski experience.

HAKUBA GONDOLA HOTEL / LODGE

Located directly across the road from the main Happo-One Gondola with the shops, bars and restaurants of Happo Village a short stroll from the Hotel.The main gondola at Happo opens an hour earlier than all the other lifts, so you if you want fresh powder this is the property for you! Happo-One is the main ski resort in the Hakuba Valley and hosted multiple Olympic events during the ‘98 Nagano Olympics.

The hotel features double, twin and family rooms options with all rooms having private bathroom facilities. The property features a bar, restaurant, guest lounge, onsite ski hire shop and ski locker room.

The Hakuba Gondola Lodge is located right beside the Hakuba Gondola Hotel. The Lodge offers a budget option for those wanting to hit up the slopes of Hakuba. The main difference between the Hotel and Lodge is that all rooms in the Lodge are shared accommodation and do not have en-suites. Western style shared bathroom facilitates are provided.

HAKUBA APARTMENTS

Brand new modern Apartments finished in December 2019. Located 250m from the Happo Sakka ski lift and close to the shuttle bus stop for other resorts on offer in the Hakuba Valley. Located in the popular Wadano area, which offers many dining and drinking options. The 2 bedroom apartments all have a kitchen, separate lounge room, 2 bathrooms and a drying room. The apartments have flexible bedding options to cater for couples, families and groups needing all separate bedding. There is an onsite Oz Snow tour host & we offer a shuttle service for shopping & essentials.

MADARAO HOTEL

Newly refurbished in 2020 our Madarao accommodation is 400m from ski lifts & walking distance to all the restaurants in Madarao village.

This Madarao accommodation has an onsite bar that serves western food, onsite ski hire, an indoor/outdoor onsen bath house & ski locker room. The rooms are mainly ensuited & can cater for couples, families, single travellers and groups. A well appointed modern hotel with forest views, Hotel Madarao offers everything you need for a comfortable stay.

MADARAO APARTMENTS

Stay in our brand new mid range Apartments completed in December 2018. Located 400m from the Madarao ski lifts and is walking distance to all the restaurant’s in Madarao village. 2 or 3 bedroom options, all apartments have kitchen, separate lounge room & bathroom. The apartments have flexible bedding options to cater for couples, families & groups needing separate bedding.

All the facilities at Hotel Madarao next door are available to apartment guests including: hotel reception services, onsite ski hire, an indoor/outdoor onsen bath house, daily breakfast & a western pub/restaurant. Apartments Madarao  offers everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Hokkaido is home to numerous mountain ranges all of which receive legendary amounts of cold, dry snow each winter. Spread across these mountains are resorts and backcountry zones offering incredible powder skiing and snowboarding. Because each area is relatively small, mobility is key to move through these areas keeping things fresh as we move around the island.

Shown below are several sample itineraries which provide a starting point but keep in mind that all itineraries can be customized to suit your length of stay, destinations of interest and type of skiing you want to do.

Pricing shown is based on a group size of 5 which is the most economical group size to travel with; however we can take groups of any size and price will vary according to the number of people in your crew.

Southwest Solutions (~8 Day)

This 8 day package will take you the best skiing in Southwest Hokkaido. This trip starts in Niseko visiting a number of areas within reach of Hokkaido`s biggest and most famous resort before wrapping up with a couple of days in the Sapporo region.

SW Backcountry Trip (~9 days)

This trip starts in the Niseko area before heading to more remote backcountry touring areas in SW Hokkaido. Ski or splitboard tours can be expected most days along with traditional accommodations, onsens and excellent food.

High Earnings (~9 days)

Visit some of Hokkaido`s most remote locations and best backcountry zones. These trips are designed to be backcountry touring focussed and we`ll hopefully put skins on every day but numerous ski resorts will remain within reach allowing for some lift accessed days depending on conditions and your interest.

The Hokkaido Fix (~9 Days)

The Hokkaido Fix will take you on a road trip to the best ski resorts and backcountry zones on the island. Itineraries can be customized to meet your group`s requirements, skiing interests and appetite for powder.

The powder season in Hokkaido is from the end of December into early March. High season is January 20 to February 10.

Generally it snows more around the western area of the island such as Niseko and Sapporo, although the Daisetsuzan mountains in Central Hokkaido get similar amounts of snow due to their higher elevations.

We regard freeride skiing as off-piste riding at the resorts. We still recommend skins for these trips, but the focus is skiing and getting as many quality turns as we can.

Backcountry skiing is mostly non-lift accessed skiing, where we will be skinning for turns in more remote locations. It may include a one ride up on the lift at the start of the day.

We only guide private groups on dates of their choosing.

Yes. Some groups book their accommodation and then book our guiding services separately.

Until October we are only taking multi-day bookings of 4 or more days. Between the January 20 and February 10 we are only taking bookings for 6 guided days until October. From November we will be acceping single day bookings.

JAPAN SKI SEASONS 2023-2024 AND 2024-2025

The Japan ski season 2023-24 was not only the first major post pandemic season, but was the biggest and best to date! In Niseko, deep powder was delivered nicely in time for the Christmas season. The second week of January saw the peak gates open to the stuff dreams are made of , and the biggest dump of snow in a single day since records began. As El Niño warmed the Pacific sea surface temperatures, late January and February saw less snowfall than average, but intermittent dumps , a good snow base and an abundance of bluebird days meant skiers and snowboarders continued to enjoy great conditions. Late February and March saw a return of winter in full force, and conditions were outstanding with dumps of fresh snow delivered day after day in Niseko , Furano , Rusutsu and Hakuba . Spring was kept firmly at bay in the latter days of the 2023-24 Japan ski season, with regular powder days lasting throughout March. 

Great weather was not the only notable thing about the 2023-24 Japan ski season. This winter also saw more visitors than any season to date. All major resorts increased their offerings in terms of accommodation and services with a focus on high end accommodation providing all the luxuries and amenities visitors need under one roof. The early start to bookings for the 2024-25 Japan ski season and the ensuing demand for holidays signals that this trend is set to continue. With Japan now firmly on the world map, not only for those in search of deep powder, but as a luxury ski destination for affluent visitors and adventure seekers, the stage is set for the Japan ski season 2024-25 to surpass all others. If a La Niña weather system emerges before next winter, this could be an indicator for higher than average snowfall!

Read on to find out when you can ski in Japan, the pros and cons of visiting over various stages of the Japan ski season, and our top tips on when is best to visit for you!

WHEN IS THE JAPAN SKI SEASON?

Located in the northern hemisphere, Japan ski season dates fall between November and May, with main dates being December to March. The northernmost ski areas are the first to open with the Niseko ski season usually starting in the last week of November or first week of December. Because the northernmost island of Japan receives abundant snowfall even at sea level, when winter arrives the ski season starts with a vengeance, with just a couple of dumps typically being all that is needed for whole ski areas to open. On the mainland, the start of the Hakuba ski season is often more gradual, with top lifts opening from around late November, and full opening perhaps not taking place until around the middle of December. For this reason, Hokkaido is often the best bet early season.

We are often asked how long the ski season in Japan lasts. While in major ski areas, the season usually lasts in some form until May, the question of when it is worth visiting depends on what you are looking for from your Japan ski trip . For the likelihood of powder snow conditions, it is really best to stick to the peak season. If you are happy to trade powder for bluebird days, empty runs and warmer weather, then usually we would recommend visiting up until early to mid-April when you can also benefit from great deals on accommodation, together with lower lift pass prices. We will review each stage of the Japan ski season in more detail below, and hope to provide you with the information you need to decide when is the best time to visit for you.

THE JAPAN SKI SEASON BROKEN DOWN

Early season, dates: end of november to mid december.

The first phase of the Japan snow season , when the ski areas open, is a tempting time to visit with there being nothing quite like the magic of the first tracks of the winter.  Being among the first on the mountain has several draws including fewer crowds and typically lower prices for accommodation and lift passes. But the lower prices are not without reason as snow cover can be less reliable with start dates occasionally being pushed back, or limited lift operation (in 2022 Niseko Grand Hirafu opened 1 day later than planned on 4th December). There will also be little depth to the snow base meaning skiing and snowboarding may be limited to the groomers with the attraction of deep backcountry powder to follow later in the Japan ski season.

Christmas & New Year

Dates: end of december to early january.

Snowy Mountains at Christmas and New Year are for many the perfect place to spend the festive season. In most European and North American the holiday season risks lack of snow, but at major Japanese ski areas  this is far less likely. The snow base may still not be deep enough for backcountry with an abundance of undergrowth still peeking through, but with the Japan ski season having begun around a month beforehand, most major ski areas will have accumulated a decent amount of snow. Christmas is celebrated in its own way, and Japan can be a magical place to spend the holidays. New Year is one of its most celebrated times of year throughout the country. With festive dates being more expensive than other times of the Japan snow season, book early and our experienced team will be able to advise you of the best deals on offer. But don’t wait long – from summer, it may be hard to find anywhere that’s not already fully booked!

Peak Powder Season

Dates: early january to mid february.

Coined, ‘Japanuary’, this is the time of the Japan snow season known for its unbelievably consistent peak powder snow conditions. Snowfall tends to be immense and the accumulated snow base allows riders to maximise experiences off-piste as well as the groomers. If you haven’t experienced Japanese powder before you will be in awe of the relentless snowfall. The feeling of sitting back in the evening watching snow falling outside your window provides a feeling of exhilaration for the day on the mountain that lies ahead. While weather can’t be guaranteed anywhere, ever, there is probably no greater likelihood of experiencing truly awesome snow conditions than at this stage of the Japan ski season. If you are not restricted to travelling over Chinese New Year, try to avoid these dates as they are generally the busiest and most expensive.

END OF PEAK SEASON

Dates: late february to early march.

This phase of the Japan ski season is still pretty much peak, with snowfall abundant and conditions are usually great. We have classified it differently because some years, warmer weather starts to creep in and pristine powder conditions are not quite what they were, whereas other years this stage of the season can be just as good as a few weeks beforehand.  Some Niseko accommodation and Hakuba accommodation offer better rates during this period, and, an even greater snow base will have accumulated. A few bluebird days is often not a bad thing either!

Japan Spring Skiing

Dates: mid march to early april.

When spring skiing starts in Japan differs from one ski season to the next. Some years temperatures start to warm up at the end of February, but usually the change in season becomes noticeable in March. Incredible spring powder dumps are not infrequent, and this time of the year usually means plentiful bluebird days with picture perfect views, from the big mountain peaks of Hakuba to the lake Toya view from Rusutsu and of course, the unbelievable Mount Youtei. When conditions really warm up ‘spring skiing’ can be fun and fast, and on mainland Japan can often coincide with the opportunity to view cherry blossoms or enjoy some warmer weather in Tokyo or Kyoto . Prices in resort come down in the spring, so if soaking up Japanese culture, onsens, cuisine and travel is for you, it may be the perfect time to visit. The Japan ski season lasts into May in some resorts, but we probably wouldn’t recommend visiting after the second weekend in April. In Hakuba higher slopes tend to offer great spring skiing well into April with more going on in the surrounding area. Hakuba is also a year round town with lots of shops and restaurants staying open outside of the ski season. Whatever ski area you visit it is important to be aware that in spring ski shuttle buses, lift operation and village amenities start to wind down. Properties that were ski in ski out may no longer be. When you book our specialist team can advise you how to ensure you get the most out of your holiday during the off-peak months.

FOR POWDERHOUNDS

If you want to stack the odds of bottomless powder with every turn in your favour, head to Niseko or Rusutsu between early January and mid February.

FOR PISTE LOVERS

Piste lovers might want to head to Hakuba where heavenly groomers and great snow cover can be expected into April, well beyond peak Japan ski season dates.

FOR LAST MINUTE BOOKERS

If you can book last minute, take advantage of early December or spring snow dumps that create amazing conditions with empty runs and low prices.

JAPAN SKI SEASON REGIONAL VARIATIONS

Typically the Japan ski season starts earlier in Hokkaido than it does on Japan’s mainland of Honshu due to its northern location. It is common for snowfall to begin in October with ski areas being fully open by late November and staying open until May. Although some people may be put off by the longer journey from Tokyo to Niseko which requires an internal flight, compared with the overland journey to Hakuba , if you are visiting early in the season you may be more likely to experience good snow conditions. It is also true to say that during peak Japan ski season Niseko weather conditions are amongst the most reliable in the world with the most western part of the island being the true powder mecca. We say the Western part, because it is the winds from Siberia that cross the Sea of Japan which dump the huge quantities of light powder snow, and they do so in much higher quantity when they hit the land in the West than they do once they’ve ventured further East. Therefore more central destinations such as Furano may experience the same cold conditions and renowned Hokkaido snow quality, but with a lower quantity of snowfall.

Japan’s mainland of Honshu unsurprisingly experiences more varied weather conditions. Even in the winter much of Honshu, including Tokyo, is bright and sunny with a moderate climate and absence of snow. In the mountains however, especially towards the Western side of the island where Hakuba is located, weather is characterised by abundant snowfall and temperatures cold enough to create excellent conditions for wintersports. With higher elevation of mainland ski areas such as Hakuba creating a bigger difference in temperature from the top of the mountain to the bottom, the Japan ski season can take longer to transition, meaning the season starts and ends more gradually. It can take longer for ski areas to fully open, but can can also last longer into spring, with Hakuba Valley offering wonderful spring skiing until around mid-April, when you can combine wintersports with wonders such as snow monkey visits and cherry blossoms viewing! With spring also offering great value for money, we recommend treating yourself to a luxury ski in ski out experience and enjoying blue skis and ski views from your balcony.

Japan ski travel is officially open!! Following the easing of restrictions on 11 October 2022, New Zealand passport holders no longer need to apply for a visa in advance. Furthermore, the ERFS certificate is no longer required. At this stage, travellers are still required to either: Be triple vaccinated and provide a vaccine certificate OR, Have a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours before departure.
