‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’s’ Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden Reunite at Comic-Con, Previews ‘Picard’ Final Season

Crusher Picard

“ Star Trek: The Next Generation ” cast members Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden reunited on stage at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, to promote the third and final season of the Paramount+ series “ Star Trek: Picard .”

Though they were not able to make it to Hall H, Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) and McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) will be joined in the new season by “TNG” costars Jonathan Frakes (William River), LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) Brent Spiner (who played the android Data on “TNG” and plays Data’s human brother Alan Inigo Soong on “Picard”), and fellow “Picard” costars Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) and Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker).

According to series executive producer Alex Kurtzman, Picard will have to set out to find and reunite his old crew, who are spread out across the galaxy. “I think we took two seasons to earn the return of the [“TNG”] crew” Kurtzman said. Kurtzman stayed mostly mum on who the main villain of the new season would be, other than to say “I won’t say much except to say that she’s amazing.”

Stewart also teased that he will indeed set foot on the Enterprise-D at least once in Season 3. “I forgot that we had carpet in there,” he joked.

The team behind the show also debuted a new teaser trailer for the third season of “Picard,” which can be seen below.

The panel was moderated by Lea Thompson, who directed two episodes of “Picard” Season 2 and also appeared in a small onscreen role in the season’s fifth episode.

The new teaser for Season 3 features first looks at the “TNG” characters who have not yet appeared on “Picard” — namely Burton’s Geordi, Dorn’s Worf, and McFadden’s Crusher — as well as some intriguing hints at what they’re up to. Geordi appears to be in an admiral’s Starfleet uniform, while Worf appears to be wearing captain’s rank insignia. Dr. Crusher, however, is out of uniform.

Season 3 of “Picard” marks the first time the central “TNG” have performed together since the 2002 feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis.” Spiner has played several characters on “Picard” including Data, whose consciousness perished for good at the end of Season 1; Frakes and Sirtis played Riker and Troi in one episode of Season 1; Whoopi Goldberg reprised her role as Guinan in the season 2 premiere and finale; Will Wheaton played Wesley Crusher in the season 2 finale; and John de Lancie concluded his role of Q over the course of Season 2.

The third and final season of “Picard,” which the cast concluded filming this spring, will premiere in 2023.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3’s Comic-Con Teaser Reunites The Next Generation

James Whitbrook

We knew they were coming back , but at last, they’re here! Just revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in today’s Star Trek Universe panel, Paramount+ dropped a brand new series of posters for the third and final season of Picard , giving us our first proper look at the return of the legendary crew of The Next Generation.

At Comic-Con today, Paramount revealed the first teaser for Picard season 3, unfortunately not revealing footage from the final season of the show, but a specially-shot promo featuring Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan, and Michelle Hurd as Picard, Seven of Nine, and Raffi, respectively… oh, and a few friends.

Yes, of course, we got our first looks at returning Picard guest stars Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis as Will Riker and Deanna Troi, but also our very first look at new-old friends: Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden as Worf, Geordi LaForge, and Beverly Crusher. Although not glimpsed in the teaser, Picard stalwart Brent Spiner is set to return in some capacity as well, which is intriguing given Data’s final passing during the events of the first season of the show. At the panel, Trek producer Alex Kurtzman teased that Spiner’s role will be as “an old-new character.”

The new trailer features some dialogue from each hero as well, culminating in a bittersweet message from Picard himself: “As long as you and your crew remain steadfast… you are never without hope.”

We’ll have to wait a while until we learn just what could be so dire to reunite Picard with his old crew—his more recent one seemingly scattered to the winds for the most part in the wake of season 2’s finale—as Star Trek: Picard will return to Paramount+ for its third and final season in 2023. For now, you can check out some brand new character posters for each hero by clicking through the next few slides.

Comic-Con 2022: ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Brings Back ‘The Next Generation’ Crew in New Teaser

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

After two seasons of Star Trek : Picard,  the Next Generation  crew is finally joining up with Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the show’s final season , as revealed by a new teaser at Star Trek ‘s Comic-Con panel.

The teaser shows Sir Patrick Stewart ‘s Picard first, followed by his Next Gen crew Lavar Burton as Geordi LaForge, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Michael Dorn as Worf, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi. Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine (the latter from Star Trek: Voyager ).

Stewart addressed Comic-Con’s crowd alongside fellow panelists McFadden and executive producers Rod Roddenberry. When asked about playing Picard, Stewart said he considers Picard an extension of himself. “ About three seasons into The Next Generation , I realized I was beginning to experience Picard to a point where I didn’t know where he was beginning and Patrick left off,” Stewart said. “ I was trusting myself to have Picard inside me so I wouldn’t have to plan or plot what Picard would do in this situation.”

As Kurtzman said of waiting two season before Picard’s old crew returned:   “We had to earn bringing The Next Generation  crew back,” he said. “This whole series has been a love letter to Next Gen, I think we’ve earned it.”

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard   comes out in 2023. Watch the teaser trailer below:

'Star Trek: Picard': A new Comic-Con trailer features the return of 'Trek' fan favorites and the beginning of a grand adventure

Star Trek: Picard may need to be renamed A Trek Family Reunion . Patrick Stewart beamed down to San Diego Comic-Con today with a new trailer that revealed that Jean-Luc Picard isn’t the only returning crew member from the Enterprise -D. Brent Spiner will reprise his role as the beloved android Data, who died at the end of 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis — the last time we saw the Next Generation crew together onscreen. Stewart also revealed that Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis will make appearances in the new series as William Riker and Deanna Troi, respectively. But the TNG cast members aren’t the only Starfleet veterans being called back to the bridge. Jeri Ryan will return as Seven of Nine, the former Borg drone who served for four seasons on Star Trek: Voyager .

As the trailer (watch above) makes clear, both Data and the Borg will be central to Picard’s journey across this 10-episode series, which Stewart described to Yahoo Entertainment earlier this year as a “ 10-hour movie .” The two-minute clip begins with the long-retired Enterprise captain recalling how Data’s sacrifice — coupled with another tragedy hinted at in the previous Picard teaser — drove him back to Earth to work his family’s vineyard with his trusty canine companion, Number One . “These past few years, I really tried to belong here,” he muses. “But it never truly felt like home.”

Fortunately for Picard, it appears he’s heading back to space at last. An encounter with a young woman named Dahj (Isa Briones) drives him back to his former employers to convince them she’s in need of protecting. Help seems slow in the offing, though, so Picard assembles a crew that includes new characters like Elnor (Evan Evagora), Rios (Santiago Cabrera), Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Agnes (Alison Pill) and Narek (Harry Treadway). “Be the captain they remember,” he’s told, and Picard obliges with a classic “Engage!” that makes us ready to follow him anywhere.

One of the pit stops on his journey will apparently involve the Borg, which is where Seven of Nine enters the picture. And she doesn’t look too happy to see the one-time Locutus of Borg. “What the hell are you doing out here, Picard?” she asks. “Saving the galaxy?” Our only response to that? Make it so.

Speaking at the SDCC panel, Stewart remembered the emotional final day of filming the TNG series finale, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this spring. “As soon as we began talking in the [ Picard ] writers’ room, that powerful emotion came surging back, and it’s still right here on this platform and it’s not going away.” Trekkies on Twitter felt the some surge of emotions as they watched the Picard trailer.

Of course, Spiner — who appears in the final shot of the teaser — couldn’t resist balancing out all the tears with a few laughs. "When I first heard about [the show], I called the producers and asked 'Do you have anyone for the role of Picard yet?’” the actor joked. "You've got to get your laughing gear in place,” Stewart remarked later on. “We have more fun that should be allowed in a series.”

There’s more Trek coming to CBS All-Access besides Picard . Showrunner Alex Kurtzman and the cast of Star Trek: Discovery were on hand to tease details about the show’s upcoming third season, which will transport the Discovery crew to an as-yet unexplored frontier for the franchise: 1,000 years in the future. "Part of the fun of [the time jump], is that we get to honor cannon and shake it up a bit,” said Kurtzman, who revealed the addition of a new cast member: Supergirl ’s David Ajala as a character named Book . Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green revealed that the crew overshot their intended destination, and now have to find their way through an unfamiliar time and space. "We go to the deepest level in Season 3,” she told the crowd We have to figure out where we are and who we are. There's this sense of brewing fire, passion, and heart. We're really excited about the next stage and the path that we're foraging.”

Meanwhile, back in the timeline the Discovery left behind, the Enterprise crew headed up by Captain Pike (Anson Mount) will take a few Short Treks . Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn — who assumed the roles of Spock and Number One, respectively, in Discovery ’s second season—will be featured in a new batch of six short-form adventures. Don’t be surprised if these lead to an ongoing Enterprise series. Kurtzman polled the room on whether they should greenlight a show with Mount, Peck and Romijn, and received a wave of cheers in response. “We’ll think about it.”

The Star Trek franchise is also boldly going into the animated realm. In between Discovery and Picard , Kurtzman brought out the cast and creators of Star Trek: Lower Decks , a half-hour cartoon set, as showrunner Mike McMahan put it, “On a not-important ship in Starfleet.”

No footage was screened from the series, but McMahan revealed that Lower Decks will be set in the wake of Star Trek: Nemesis and after the Voyager had returned from its seven-year lost in space experience, with stories focusing on the humdrum aspects of life aboard a Starfleet vessel. Kurtzman described McMahan’s pitch as being: "I want to do a show about people that bring the yellow cartridge to the replicator so a banana comes out."

Star Trek: Short Treks will premiere on Oct. 4; Star Trek: Discovery returns on Jan. 17; and Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere in 2020 only on CBS All-Access.

Every major Star Trek announcement from San Diego Comic-Con

S an Diego Comic-Con has come and gone. The biggest takeaway from the weekend? The return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dr. Doom. Does that casting make sense? No, but it's a desperate move by a desperate brand. One we can recognize all too well. The toast of the town was the MCU as the annual July convention came to a close but that doesn't mean that Star Trek didn't make their moves at the event.

They were there in force, with a nearly 90-minute event that featured a rotating group of panelists from the Star Trek universe. During the event, multiple major items were shown off, hinted at our outright announcement. So much so that if you're just picking up stuff on social media or looking through a given website, you may be unable to find everything that was announced.

So we're here to help you out. We're going through every major announcement and putting them all together in one easy-to-find spot.

New Show in Development

A new show is in early development which will feature Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Justin Simien of Haunted Mansion fame. Newsome of course was one of the lead voices on Lower Decks, but she may not be appearing in the new show. Instead, she's going to help create it. For those of you who may have forgotten, Newsome was helping write Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Clearly, her time with the show has led to people thinking she should help create a show. Creating a pure-comedy series in Star Trek is always an uphill battle, especially since the series is more about morality than it is knee-slapping humor.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds first look at season three and the return of an old character

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a bit off from having its third season ready to go, but that didn't stop the series from appearing at San Diego Comic-Con. They showed a rather humorous look at the upcoming season. Captain Christopher Pike, Nyota Uhura, Christine Chapel, and La'an Noonien Singh all took part in an undercover mission with Spock that saw them change their DNA.

The non-Vulcan members of the aforementioned group, get their DNA re-arranged so that they may not only appear but become Vulcans for a short time. This is done up for some comedy, as now Spock is the one that is seen as "illogical", as he's only partially a Vulcan. Something his crew mates are all too ready to remind him of. This of course leads to some silly shenanigans, with the crew being nearly perfect in everything they do.

They complete their mission very quickly and return to the ship ahead of schedule, yet they don't return to their human selves. Thus setting up a situation where the crew is stuck as the obnoxious Vulcans that they've become. It's cute, quirky, and seems like a lot of fun. All elements of a pretty fantastic Star Trek.

Plus, Anson Mount 's hair is even better as a Vulcan.

That's not all, however, as it was also announced at the convention that Dr. Roger Korby will return to the franchise. He was the antagonist for the seventh episode of the first season.

Lower Decks debuts first trailer and new comic

The final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is almost here. The show's final season is set to debut on Oct. 24, 2024, and will send the show off in style. The final season's first teaser trailer debuted at SDCC and tugged at the heartstrings of the show's fanbase. The opening was all about past experiences, with clips and highlights of past adventures shown.

The trailer continued on, showing some of what to expect in season five, including alternate reality versions of the Cerritos' crew.

That's not all, however. The show may be coming to an end starting this October, but there will be new stories for fans to engage in. Alongside the announcement of the season's fifth teaser trailer, there was also a revelation of a new set of stories involving the crew of the Cerritos. Starting in November, there will be a new IDW comic launched, that focuses on and features the crew of the USS Cerritos.

Fans can start preordering the comic, and they'll have until Oct. 7 before preorders end.

Section 31 debuts trailer to extremely negative reaction

One of the more controversial concepts that Paramount has cooked up in some time remains as such. Star Trek: Section 31 has debuted its new trailer and fans aren't loving it. There is a fraction of the fanbase that seems to enjoy the mood and atmosphere, but it comes off as wholly un-Star Trek. Something not lost on many people.

The general discourse online is that this trailer misses what Section 31 is, and tries to turn it into a snarky action-comedy that falls flat. The like-to-dislike ratio on YouTube is a clear sign this isn't a Star Trek fan's idea of a good film. The trailer has 3.1k likes to 32k dislikes (courtesy of the Return YouTube Dislike app).

It's done a great job uniting the fandom. Be it YouTube comments, Reddit posts, or online Twitter discourse, fans hate this trailer. No one knows who it's made for and it doesn't even retain the same energy as Discovery. Moreover, Section 31 is a group of authoritative, oppressive, torturers, who embody everything wrong with Starfleet.

Fans were never truly on board with this film.

The Doctor is in, and the best of the rest

Robert Picardo is returning once again to the world of Star Trek, having just appeared in Prodigy's second season, once again as The Doctor. This time around, he'll be returning in live-action with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. This is likely the same Doctor from Prodigy and his original show, Voyager, which should mean this Doctor has seen many things across many years. However, it's possible that the doctor could be a different version of the same original creation.

He won't be joined alone, as Tig Notaro will join Picard as a series regular, while Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman will reprise their characters as well for a special guest appearance role.

Doctor Who and Star Trek have teamed up for a mobile game crossover that some fans may be interested in. However, a crossover between the two long-running science fiction franchises seems unlikely to materialize, just simply due to the complications that would arise legally.

Lastly, Star Trek: Prodigy season two is coming to Blu-Ray in November.

Picard New York Comic Con

EXCLUSIVE: Coming off a triumphant Hall H debut at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, the Star Trek Universe now is set to engage with the Big Apple at New York Comic Con next month.

With Sonequa Martin-Green, Sir Patrick Stewart and Trekverse kingpin and executive producer Alex Kurtzman at the helm, both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard will be appearing October 5 at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, I have learned.

Similar to the extravaganza at SDCC, the NYCC panel will run as a two-headed Federation experience from 1-2:30 p.m. on the penultimate day of the confab. Along with the respective leads and EP Kurtzman, Discovery ’s Doug Jones, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz and David Ajala are expected onstage to deep dive into the upcoming third season of the CBS All Access series.
