Tourism Internships Abroad

An international internship in tourism is an essential part of a well-rounded understanding of the hospitality industry. With global travel on the rise, a tourism internship abroad will give you an understanding of how to cater to an international clientele.

You will also get a glimpse into the operations and customs of a hotel or resort in another country, which can expand your own ideas of the hospitality industry. Tourism internships will help interns build skills in communication, flexibility, adaptability, and self-confidence, and learn about hotel management, tourism, marketing, reception, event planning, tours, or conference management.

Setting clear goals is essential for a successful tourism internship abroad. Here are some tips to help structure and choose your experience:

  • Identify your interests and what aspects of tourism you really want to focus on, if you don’t know already. (e.g., hospitality, tour guiding, marketing)
  • Learn about the different types of environments and even countries you are and are not interested in whether it’s a climate, specific activity, or a field within tourism.
  • Define what professional skills you specifically want to learn during this internship whether it’s a soft or hard skill.

Interning abroad in tourism offers numerous advantages that you can understand from theory. Whatever field you find yourself in, there are plenty of basic benefits to learn about:

  • First hand experience . Apply classroom theory to practical situations in a fast-paced environment while gaining confidence in a structured setting.
  • Profession skill development . Gain valuable hard and soft skills, such as organization, time management, and cross-cultural communication. Tourism offers a new experience every day so interns can practice with professional guidance.
  • Career boost and network . Enhance your resume, and professional network with international experience, setting you apart from other job applicants.

Selecting the right location is a key factor for a fulfilling tourism internship. Here are some top destinations to consider:

New Zealand

New Zealand is ideal for internships in adventure tourism and sustainable tourism. Known for outdoor activities like bungee jumping, skydiving, and trekking, it offers diverse hospitality internship opportunities focused on active exploration.

Chile is perfect for improving Spanish skills and gaining experience in a growing tourism industry. With bustling cities like Santiago and outdoor attractions in Patagonia, Chile offers a dynamic internship environment in both urban and rural settings.

Spain is a top choice for internships in a popular tourist destination. Cities like Barcelona and Madrid offer world-class hospitality experiences and frequent tourism events. Smaller towns in southern Spain provide unique opportunities to work in well-visited holiday spots.

When you go to intern make sure it works for you! Consider a few ideas before narrowing down.

  • Summer . If you’re looking to jump right into the heart of it, there’s no better time of the year—anything from hospitality to adventure tourism is at its peak.
  • Fall . Want to have a quieter intro to interning in the tourism industry? Fall is great, with milder weather and fewer tourists.
  • Winter . The main opportunities are winter sports tourism and holiday events. It’s generally a small pocket but you’ll work hard.
  • Spring . It’s a great time to get a little experience before the summer season begins with moderate weather and minimal buzz.

The duration of your internship can vary depending on your goals and the program. Do what makes sense for you!

  • 1-3 months : Perfect for gaining quick experience during a break from school or work. Lots of exploratory and introductory work is common.
  • 3-6 months : A longer stay allows for deeper immersion and learning. It may be a program you work through as you learn more about the environment.
  • 1 year : ideal for comprehensive experience and skill development. Great for people on a gap year, fresh graduates, or young professionals wanting more experience.

Here are some additional tips and considerations for interning in tourism abroad:

Language skills

Depending on placement, there may be some language skills you should learn or brush up on. It often is received positively and locals are happy to help!

Expect to work flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends.

Living arrangements

Some internships offer housing or assistance in finding accommodation. Be prepared either way.

Cost of living

Research the cost of living in your chosen location to budget accordingly.

Cultural adaptation

Be open to learning new cultural norms and practices—it’ll provide a deeper connection.

Intern Abroad FAQs

Where will i intern.

While some organizations have a list of open internships and place applicants in those positions, we work in the opposite direction. We first learn about you, your interests, goals and experience, and then actively pursue the internship that provides you with experience directly relevant to your future career.

What will I be doing at my internship?

Our internships are customized to fit each individual’s goals, interests, and skill level. We consider all of these things and then make a placement accordingly. Therefore, we don’t have specific internships “set aside” waiting for people to fill them. We have placed interns in both small and large companies, but due to confidentiality of our host companies and organizations we are not able to provide a list of companies.

If I am accepted into the program, am I guaranteed an internship?

We are confident in our ability to find impactful,  skill-building internships. If you are accepted into our program, we guarantee that we will find you a placement in your first or second choice field.

Do I need to have experience?

We arrange rewarding internship placements for people with all levels of experience. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an expert in your field, a successful experience requires a positive approach and a mind open to learning, growing and strengthening your skills.

Are the internships paid?

We really wish we could offer paid internships, but all of the internships we coordinate are unpaid placements. Paid internships abroad are few and far-between, as they require a different type of visa that is difficult to attain, and they also require sponsorship by the host company, which is quite costly for them. The goal of our program is to provide meaningful, hands-on experience in your specific profession or field of study that will give you a competitive edge in the job market and make you valuable to employers who are globally minded. If you are seeking a placement to help you gain international experience, improve your skills in your field and enhance your resume, our program provides the perfect opportunity.

What companies do you work with?

Is there a cost to particiate.

We strive to provide immersive, life changing, and professionally rewarding programs for our interns. Our programs are designed as a comprehensive “program” instead of just the internship so that we can provide a full experience for our participants. The program fees we charge include the in-country expenses (housing, insurance, orientation, etc.) and also the dedicated work that goes behind finding a customized, one-of-a-kind, international internship placement.

The role of a travel manager in the corporate world

Corporate travel managers specialize in managing travel for companies and their employees. They work closely with organizations to establish travel policies, negotiate corporate rates with hotels and airlines and ensure compliance with corporate guidelines.

Corporate travel policy

A corporate travel policy is a set of guidelines established by a company to regulate and standardize the process of business travel for its employees or clients. It outlines the authorized procedures, expenses and limitations associated with work-related trips, ensuring cost control and adherence to company objectives.

Components of a corporate travel policy

A comprehensive corporate travel policy typically includes:

A clear policy ensures employees understand and can comply with company regulations, legal requirements and safety standards, minimizing potential risks and liabilities.

Adhering to the corporate travel policy

A company’s travel policy allows a travel manager to control expenses, negotiate better rates with vendors and optimize travel itineraries. Compliance with established guidelines promotes consistency and transparency.

As a travel manager, it’s considered best practice to update employees about any policy changes through effective communication and ongoing training.

Organizational skills for successful corporate travels
