Us national parks travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How many national parks are there in the US?

The US has 423 national parks, monuments, and protected sites. Of this number, 63 are classified as national parks.

What is the best time to visit national parks in the US?

The best time to visit a national park depends on what you want to experience on your trip. The US is a huge country with diverse weather, foliage, and wildlife. Most parks change quite dramatically from season to season. Our trips run all year round but spring through to early fall is the most popular time to go when the weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and hiking conditions are good.

What are the top 10 most visited national parks in the US?

The 10 most visited national parks (The National Park Service, 2020) are:

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Yellowstone National Park
  • Zion National Park
  • Rocky Mountain National Park
  • Grand Teton National Park
  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park
  • Acadia National Park
  • Olympic National Park
  • Joshua Tree National Park

What is mobile/cell phone service and internet access like in US national parks?

Mobile phone service, Wi-Fi, and internet access vary, and some parks will have coverage while others may be completely cut off.

Most visitor centers, lodges, and restaurants will offer free internet access, but it’s worth reading up on coverage or checking with your guide before your trip begins so you can be prepared.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Really liked our guide Ken, He was full of knowledge, friendly and helpful. The highlight of our trip was either seeing three types of whales or walking a glacier. B...

Too much time spent in the minibus getting from A to B, however, I don't know how you mitigate this as the distances are so large. Very disappointed in the wildlife...

 Itinerary

Day 1 las vegas.

Welcome to exciting Las Vegas, also known as “Sin City!” Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.

Day 2 LAS VEGAS–WILLIAMS–GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

Depart the glittering lights of Las Vegas for one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Grand Canyon National Park. Journey across the old Mojave gold-strike country, passing through Williams on historic Route 66, and Kaibab National Forest. Arrive at the Grand Canyon by mid-afternoon and marvel at the breathtaking views. Accommodations this evening are inside the National Park.

Day 3 GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK–MONUMENT VALLEY–KAYENTA

If you miss the sunset over the canyon, sunrise is just as impressive! You may want to join an exciting helicopter flight over the canyon for incomparable views of flame-colored walls plunging 6,000 feet into the Colorado River. Continue across Arizona and into the Navajo Nation. Situated on the Arizona/Utah border, Monument Valley’s scenic desert vistas and iconic buttes have appeared in countless classic Western films. See the massive formations on a memorable 4-wheel-drive tour. Your knowledgeable Navajo guide will show you some of the valley’s most incredible scenery and share local legends and lore. This evening, join the optional Navajo cookout for dinner surrounded by the red-rock canyons of Monument Valley.

Day 4 KAYENTA–MOAB–ARCHES NATIONAL PARK–GRAND JUNCTION

We head north for Moab. Visit the magnificent Arches National Park, where you’ll discover a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms, and textures unlike anything else in the world. This red-rock wonderland will amaze you. A late arrival into Grand Junction, surrounded by awe-inspiring natural beauty and the dramatic red-rock landscape of the Colorado National Monument.

Day 5 GRAND JUNCTION–COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT–DENVER AREA

This morning, visit Colorado National Monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. Experience sheer-walled, red-rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles. We then journey east across the Rocky Mountains to the “Mile High City” of Denver.

Day 6 DENVER AREA–CUSTER

Today, travel across the windswept landscape of Wyoming and into the Black Hills of South Dakota. Spend the next two nights in Custer, in the heart of the Black Hills National Forest, and gateway to Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Memorial.

Day 7 CUSTER. EXCURSION TO CUSTER STATE PARK, MOUNT RUSHMORE & CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL

At Custer State Park, enjoy a scenic drive along Wildlife Loop Road with spectacular terrain and an abundance of wildlife, like the herd of 1,300 bison that roam freely throughout the park. Afterward, visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which stands as a shrine to democracy with the stunning granite faces of four great American presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. Then, visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, a monument carved out of a mountain to honor the great Native American hero, Crazy Horse.

Day 8 CUSTER–DEVILS TOWER–CODY

This morning, head through high country, where open-range cattle kings made war on the homesteaders in the 1890s. Next, make a photo stop at Devils Tower National Monument, established as America’s first national monument by Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. Overnight in Buffalo Bill’s Western town of Cody.

Day 9 CODY–YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

This morning, join the optional outing and visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, which celebrates the spirit of the American West. This afternoon, make your way into America’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park. Spend the next two nights inside the park. NOTES : Accommodations used by Cosmos in Yellowstone National Park are typically open from late May through mid-September. Departures before or after these opening dates will stay in West Yellowstone. Routing and areas visited in Yellowstone National Park are always subject to favorable weather, gate access, and road conditions; therefore, routings may be adjusted .

Day 10 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Spend the day exploring all the wonders of Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 as the world’s first national park. See world-famous Old Faithful Geyser, Mammoth Hot Springs, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and Fountain Paint Pots. Keep a lookout for some of the park’s wildlife that can include moose, bison, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, wolf, bear, fox, coyote, and beaver.

Day 11 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK–GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK–JACKSON–ALPINE

Head south into magnificent Grand Teton National Park, home to massive mountains, pristine lakes and rivers and abundant wildlife. Its 13,770-foot-high ridges are crested with snow most of the year. Stroll along the shores of beautiful glacier-fed Jenny Lake before arriving in the Wild West town of Jackson with its wooden sidewalks and swinging-door saloons. Overnight in Alpine located on the banks of the Snake River.

Day 12 ALPINE–SALT LAKE CITY

Travel to Salt Lake City, Utah’s vibrant capital. Set on the edge of Great Salt Lake Desert, this center of the Mormon religion is where Brigham Young declared to his followers, “This is the place.” An orientation tour offers a glimpse of Temple Square, the Capitol Building, and the downtown area.

Day 13 SALT LAKE CITY–BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

Today’s highlight is a visit to unique Bryce Canyon National Park with its 20 miles of sandstone cliffs and ever-changing colors. See some of Earth’s most brilliant shades of rock, sculpted by nature into pillars called “hoodoos.”

Day 14 BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK–ZION NATIONAL PARK–LAS VEGAS

First stop today is Zion National Park with its landscape carved over millions of years by rushing streams. Steep canyons, stone towers, and verdant vegetation form the scenery of Zion. See fantastic rock structures and some unbelievable scenic beauty. We then return to Las Vegas.

Day 15 LAS VEGAS

Your vacation ends this morning. You may choose to extend your vacation with extra nights and explore Las Vegas further.

With COSMOS, there’s no better way to get to know your destination than through the eyes of a Tour Director. We’d like you to meet one of our Tour Directors, who average over a decade of experience and are representative of the type of expert that will be with you on your vacation.

ANDREW MORAN

Escorting tours for more than 20 years

“ Born in Salisbury , England , I left England at the age of nine and ended up in Los Angeles. Some of my hobbies include travel , flying (I have my license to fly small , single-engine planes) , gardening (growing my own fruits and veggies is awesome) , and landscaping (it gives me a chance to learn about different trees and plants). My advice to travelers is to come with an open mind and look forward to learning new things. What makes other places so special is that they're not home! ”

Words cannot express how much we enjoyed the natural beauty, the stress free travel arrangements, the accommodations, the food, the friendliness of everyone and especially our wonderful guide,Trevor. He made sure we saw all the beauty, while focusing on what was important to us and keeping us safe. Thank you Tiffany for giving us a lifetime of beautiful memories.

Having never been to the national parks of southern Utah, this was an amazing trip. From accommodations to meals to adventure guide/driverTrevor. — all exceeded expectation. Wonderful group, accommodation, allowing privacy and social interaction, home, cooked breakfast daily, incredible restaurants, and so much to see! Of course for dog lovers. Going to Best Friends Sanctuary is certainly a highlight complete with a VIP tour. We certainly will look at National Park Tourz and Trevor for another vacation.

Fantastic tour at Best Friends and National Parks!! Tiffany, Pam and Jeff, the guide were so helpful, caring, knowledgeable, willing to go the extra mile to help, etc….can’t say enough positive things about them! Loved Lake Powell, Bryce, Zion and Peekaboo Canyon! Volunteering at Best Friends was fun and enlightening.

I was on a tour with eight other people and we volunteered at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in the morning and went to various National Parks in the afternoon. It was one of the best tours I have ever been on. We were very well taken care of and our guide, Nick, couldn’t have been nicer or more informative. It was just the right balance of fun, education and exposure to the wonders of southern Utah.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Everything about the Animal Lovers Tour was amazing! My fiend Kelly and I went on this adventure together and met the best housemates on our tour. Our tour guide, Dan, was so knowledgeable, funny, kind and accommodating. Trevor, another guide, was also amazing! He took us on an ATV ride that was incredible! This trip was a trip of a lifetime that has left us with the most beautiful memories possible!

An extraordinary week with great guides (Trevor and Jeff were both knowledgeable, flexible and fun), amazing food and the perfect combination of Best Friends Sanctuary volunteering and exploring beautiful southern Utah!

Tauck's National Park vacations offer inside experiences thanks to our relationships and partnerships within the parks. With exceptional access, we are able to handle all of the details for you so you can spend more time enjoying these must-see places at the best time of day and with fewer crowds.

National Parks

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the National Parks

Our relationships with the national parks runs deep going back many many years. With that... we are able to show you something pretty special as you visit must-see places at their must-see times of day and when you stay at inside-the-park hotels, the crowds are fewer and the experience is richer. There's no planning and no organizing – and the best of all, no driving; we take care of all the details. And at the end of the day, hearing "I've seen and done everything I hoped to" is music to our ears.

Explore three national parks on one journey, grand teton national park, niagara falls, ontario, "canada's capital cities plus niagara falls" and "cruising the great lakes: chicago to toronto".

Comprised of three waterfalls – American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls – Niagara Falls water stems from the upper Great Lakes; the river is estimated to be 12,000 years old. Journey to thundering Niagara Falls for a catamaran cruise near the plunging waters and misty spray of the waterfalls – getting wet is a distinct possibility – and explore the quaint Victorian village of Niagara-on-the-Lake with its flower-filled, tree-lined streets.

Yellowstone National Park

Bryce canyon national park, a feast for the eyes... and the soul.

Oranges and pinks never seen anywhere else dance and dazzle the eye as sunlight plays over Bryce Canyon National Park, where wind and rain have sculpted the canyon's famously quirky, logic-defying "hoodoos" that, according to Paiute legend, were once human before a powerful god called Coyote froze them into rock (for the record, the rock is Navajo sandstone). This universe of warm colors literally glows at sunrise and sunset – a sight to see that can send shivers up your spine. The park reveals nature dressed in a coat of many colors – hues beyond imagining, deeply satisfying to the eye, and energizing to the spirit.

Grand Canyon National Park

Not just a hole in the ground....

Surely you have stumbled upon some other planet... or at least it feels that way at Grand Canyon National Park. Your first glimpse of the enormous Grand Canyon strains credulity. What giants have been playing with the rock here? Or what cataclysmic force of the universe? Then the drama starts. Clouds, shadows, and the shifting sun keep transforming the landscape. As the sun flames in the west, canyon walls turn red while the giants paint the sky, creating masterpieces so beautiful they freeze you in your tracks. The Grand Canyon sprawls wide open, carved out by the Colorado River, revealing two billion years of Earth's history; here is where air meets land, where you meet what feels like destiny, with just the white-tailed Kaibab squirrel, only found here, as witness.

Yosemite National Park

Through the eyes of john muir and ansel adams.

What a young Ansel Adams saw through his lens as he trekked into the California wilderness more than 100 years ago – as John Muir did a half-century before him – has inspired countless visitors to explore its chiseled landscapes in starry-eyed wonder ever since. You won't find modern conveniences here. Celestial bodies trump electricity. Running water falls from rocks. Residents are furred, finned or feathered. And skyscrapers with names like Half Dome and El Capitan are nature made. Adams was just 14 when he first spied the grandeur of Yosemite National Park, armed with a Kodak Brownie camera his father had given him… and a new era began not only for him, but for the wilderness treasures he spent his lifetime celebrating. His iconic photographs need no words or explanation. Even in black and white, they capture what he felt about places now immortalized for future generations.

5 National Parks You Can Visit by Bus

Consider leaving your car and taking a shuttle for a more environmentally friendly experience.

buses parked for tourists in denali national park alaksa

Did you know that a trip to the great outdoors can be more than just a good time? Walking in nature does great things for our physical, emotional and social well-being, research shows. It’s easy to see why many of us are interested in planning a trip to a national park. In fact, 312 million people traveled to a  national park  in 2022 — an increase of 15 million visitors from 2021. More visitors means more crowding and congestion in the parks; scenic roads can be jammed and parking spots scarce. The large volume of cars can cause air and noise pollution. But there’s a transportation revolution happening: Sophisticated and convenient shuttle bus systems reduce congestion, stress and environmental degradation. Plus, many of the shuttle services within national parks are free. Here are five parks that make it easy to ditch your car and let someone else take the wheel.

 Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Grand Canyon National Park  has provided shuttle bus service for more than 40 years, expanding into the impressive prototype of today’s national park. The park’s large and contemporary visitor center on the popular South Rim serves as the hub for a fleet of buses on five interconnecting routes that serve all major attractions, including numerous trailheads and the Yavapai Museum of Geology on the canyon rim at Yavapai Point. Environment bonus: The buses run on compressed natural gas, reducing harmful emissions and noise. Buses run every 15-30 minutes, and all are wheelchair-accessible.

When:  Shuttles operate year-round; however, certain routes are seasonal. Tip: Download the National Park Service’s  NPS App  to check before you go.

Cost:  Free

 Zion National Park, Utah

hikers walking by a bus in mount zion national park utah

The two-lane, dead-end road to lovely  Zion  Canyon, the scenic heart of this national park, was congested and noisy. Rather than expanding the road and parking lots, the National Park Service established a state-of-the-art shuttle bus system of quiet, propane-powered vehicles that carry visitors in and out of the canyon from the visitor center just inside the park (Zion Canyon Line) and also from the adjacent town of Springdale where most visitors stay (Springdale Line). The road into the canyon is now closed to private cars during much of the year. Another bus bonus: A narration describes the history and geology of the area and serves as a reminder to keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, eagles and other wildlife as you explore the park. Shuttle buses are accessible and operate about every 15 minutes.

When:  Early March through mid-November

Cost:  Free

 Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia  shares Maine’s Mount Desert Island with several communities, and the Island Explorer bus system offers transportation throughout much of the region. The fleet of clean-fuel, propane-powered buses connects major attractions — including the park’s campgrounds, scenic vistas and lighthouses — with communities, the airport and ferry terminal. Buses travel 11 routes; Route 3 stops at Sand Beach where the Ocean Path Trail offers stunning views of the water (the path is accessible from the upper parking lot). Buses are accessible, and bike racks are available. Tip: Download the myStop app for Island Explorer locations and to see where the buses are in real time.

When:  Late June to the end of August, with some routes continuing to early October

 Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

a free visitor bus at rocky mountain national park in colorado

Some of America’s most dramatic mountains make up the heart of  Rocky Mountain National Park . To help address growing visitor demand, the park’s shuttle bus system services trailheads and other attractions in the Bear Lake and Moraine Park areas. From a large Park & Ride facility, visitors can take the Bear Lake Route or the Moraine Park Route; both offer outstanding hiking opportunities (Bear Lake Loop and Coyote Valley Trail are accessible and easy options for all skill levels). Parking is limited in these regions, so the shuttle bus system assures visitor access. There’s also a Hiker Shuttle Route that takes visitors from the adjacent town of Estes Park to the Park & Ride facility. All Hiker Shuttle buses are accessible. Most buses in the park are wheelchair-accessible; however, contact the shuttle service before you go to ensure you have options. All visitors must purchase a timed entry permit to enter the park from May 26 to Oct. 22; reservations are available starting May 1.

When:  Late May to mid-October

Cost:  Routes to Bear Lake and Moraine Park are free; Hiker Shuttle routes from Estes Park are $2 for a group of four people.

 Denali National Park, Alaska

goats on a mountainside near a bus in denali national park alaska

Alaska’s vast  Denali National Park  and Preserve is more than 6 million acres, larger than some states. To help keep this wilderness wild, a large and diverse shuttle bus system takes visitors deep into the park on its only road, the 92-mile Denali Park Road, which generally parallels the magnificent Alaska Range. Denali has the longest continuously running shuttle system in the NPS, and private cars are not allowed beyond the first 15 miles of the road. Visitors can choose among two types of buses and several routes. The green “transit bus” routes are not narrated and travel different distances into the park; these buses are ideal for hikers, and cost is based on the destination. Tour buses feature narration, travel shorter distances and are more expensive. All bus riders can enjoy the park’s varied landscapes, views of 20,310-foot Denali (when not shrouded in the clouds) and world-class wildlife. Select shuttles accommodate wheelchairs, so contact the park if you need assistance. Through 2024, buses will only travel to Mile 43 due to a landslide in the park.

When:  Late May through mid-September

Cost:  Transit bus: $32.75, which doesn’t include park entrance fee; tour buses: $114-$141.25, including entrance fee

There are 63 national parks across the country, including two in U.S. territories.

USA TODAY has been spotlighting each one in a yearlong series that shares insights and tips from the park rangers who know them best.

Has anyone been to all 63 national parks?

Yes. Multiple people have accomplished this bucket list feat, including Stefanie Payne, who visited all 63 parks within one year and wrote about them in " 100 Things to See in the National Parks ."

“The Alaska parks are the ones that are deepest in my heart because they are in such a remote and rugged landscape,” she previously told USA TODAY . “It's really just mind-bending to be in some of those areas, especially when the mountains are so big and the glaciers and the terrain is really challenging and you start to see what you're made of.”

What state has the best national parks?

Many national parks fans point to Utah’s Mighty Five : Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion, but best is subjective.

“I'm sure every park is like, ‘Everywhere is the best.’ It's all so good, right?” Petrified Forest National Park park ranger Jessica Barnett told USA TODAY.

Which state has the most number of national parks?

California has the most national parks, with nine: Channel Islands, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic, Pinnacles, Redwood, Sequoia, and Yosemite.

Death Valley actually straddles California and Nevada. A number of America’s national parks span multiple states.

What state has no national park?

There are no national parks in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont or Wisconsin.

However, all 50 states are home to other National Park Service units , like national battlefields and seashores, which are sometimes called parks.

The National Park System currently has 429 units. The most recent addition is Amanche National Historic Site in Colorado. Travelers can find sites by state on the National Park Service’s website .

What is a national park a park for?

When Yellowstone became America’s first national park in 1872, Congress designated it “a public park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people,” but national parks have come to offer and protect much more.

“The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations,” according the mission shared on its website.

To help protect these spaces, visitors are asked to leave no trace .

Description

Highlights:.

  • Explore most popular parks of Moscow;

  • Experience the best route of a local public trolley;
  • Take a ride along the border of medieval Moscow;
  • Take a stroll through the city's only hanging bridge;

  • Enjoy vintage and Soviet architecture of our city;
  • Enjoy scenic views of Moscow from the Crimean Bridge.

Bus Tour Itinerary:

Want to feel like a real Muscovite and experience the atmosphere or this extraordinary city in just a few hours? Then explore ithe main artery of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After you visited the ancient Kremlin, explored the area of Kitay Gorod and enjoyed the sights of White city, it's time to move on and take a ride along the 17th century border of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After we explore the Stalin skyscraper -  building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we will turn to Old Arbat pedestrian zone. You will see lovely houses of 19 centuries and feel the atmosphere of old Moscow, as the Arbat preserved it almost untouched.

In 90-s Arbat was chosen by the members of numerous subcultures as the place for hangout. Nowadays Arbat is Bohemian place and one of Moscow's symbols. But long time ago it was just a suburb.

Soon we’ll find ourselves on New Arbat, that was founded in 60-s, and was conceived as a government road. This New Arbat dramatically differs from the Old Arbat.

Patriarch Ponds

One more beloved place among the Muscovites with a very rich history. A lots of famous and outstanding personalities lived in this area: poets, scientists, militaries and even criminals. In 17 century Patriarch Hermogenus founded a Patriarch's village here, hence the name. Moreover, this place is famous all over the world thanks to the genius Russian writer M. Bulgakov. He chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene of his novel "The Master and Margarita".

Hermitage Garden

The next coziest and memorable place for all of Muscovites is Hermitage Garden. Before the Revolution it was a Bohemian place, frequently attended by the great actors and writers, art workers, and patrons. Here for the first time in Moscow a movie of Lumiere's brothers was shown. Today tradition continues and there are two theaters inside the park, lots of memorials and fun.

Museon Park & Gorky Park

Today Muscovites can't imagine their leisure activities without visiting Museon Statues Park and Gorky Park. These are fun areas. Take a look at Soviet monuments of Communist rulers, take a walk along the embankment, note what's wrong with the Peter's the Great monument, enjoy big musical fountain in Gorky park and observe how Russians spend their free time.

Crimean bridge

The last part of our Moscow bus tour you'll spend walking over the Crimean bridge. Long time ago on that place was a ford, which the Crimean Tatars used in order to attack Muscovy, that's why it was called Crimean. This hanging bridge is the one of a kind in Moscow. Moreover, it serves as a fabulous observation point, it is really a mysterious place.

On the tour you will find out:

  • why Stalin was mad when he saw the building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • how Muscovites truly call New Arbat;
  • the real reason why Bulgakov chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene where Devil arrived for the first time;
  • who suggested to build Moscow rings;
  • where are hidden all the gardens on the Garden Ring;
  • why Crimean bridge is very dangerous.

On the tour you will see:

  • Historical buildings of 19 century;
  • Stalin's Empire;
  • 4 out of 7 Stalin Skyscrapers;
  • Old and New Arbat;
  • Most popular Moscow Parks;
  • First electric street lamp in Moscow;
  • Main squares of the city;
  • Fascinating non touristy places;
  • Muscovites daily life and transportation.

Fun Facts from our Bus Tours:

What is the garden ring in moscow.

Actually, we call the Garden Ring  a series of streets, separated by the squares.

A great number of fascinating and historical places a re situated on the Garden Ring.  Traveling along that street, you can briefly learn about all main areas of Moscow, learn its history and meaning. It will help you to navigate Moscow better and surely you can feel more like a local on this tour.

Every square on the Garden Ring has its own historical background. For example, Sukharevskaya square in 19 century hosted a market. It was very popular among Muscovites, but usually stolen things were sold there. Often people had to buy there their own stuff again after it was stolen. The Smolenskaya, Crimean, Serpukhovskaya, Taganskaya squares were market places too.

Triumphalnaya square bears its name in memory of triumphal arch that stood here to commemorate the victory over Sweden, built by the order of Peter the Great, as well as Red Gate square placed another triumphal arch. In the beginning of 20 century Triumphal square was a cultural place. Several theaters were situated there, Meyerhold’s theater among them, a circus and a park.

Three squares of the Garden Ring became real battlefields during the revolution between the bolsheviks and tsar's supporters in 1917. And finally capitulation of royal regime was signed in the building, situated on the Garden Ring.

"And the Garden ring became a wedding ring to us…"

These are words from the official soundtrack to the very popular soviet movie "Moscow does not believe in tears" that has won an American Academy Award for the best foreign language film in 1980. Not coincidentally Garden Ring is mentioned in this song as a symbol of Moscow. As it is very important part of our city, it reflects all historical events beginning from the end of 16th century.

A Garden Ring? No. An earthern rampart!

The territory outside White city's wall was called Earthern city . The Earthern city was an area were traditionally poor citizens used to settle: peasants and craftsmen. In comparison with the White city this area has always been dirty and less prestigious. For example, in White city streets were paved in stone and buildings stood on the stone basements while Earthern city had only wooden houses.

This area was proclaimed as a part of Moscow only in 1593. And great fortification wooden wall, that surrounded the territory of Earthern city, was erected by the order of tsar Fyodor Ioannovich only in a year and was called "Skorodom" - fast-built house. Outside Skorodom was additionally fortificated with the moat and the rampart.

In Times of Troubles Skorodom was burnt down by Poles and restored by the Great Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich the Silent. Finally it had 57 towers and 11 entry gates.  Nowadays on that spots, where gates once stood, you can spot the main squares of Moscow.

Skorodom was destroyed and restored a lot's of times: during the Times of Troubles, Napoleon's invasion, in frequent Moscow fires. And finally in 1830 Skorodom was demolished as it lost its functions.

Miraculous transfiguration on Stalin’s orders

In 1917 the Great October revolution blew up everything that seemed to be right at that time. And in 1930-s Moscow was reconstructed… again. This time communists were making Moscow a model of communistic city. Surely that large-scale reconstruction touched the Garden Ring. The road was widened up to 60-70 meters, paved and became a ring with the help of new bridges: Crimean and Krasnokholmskiy. Since that time the Garden Ring is considered the main artery of Moscow.
