7 Personal Benefits of Travel

go and travel meaning

Forget milling around in your finest evening wear, Singapore Sling in hand: You'll be lucky to get peanuts. Flying isn't quite the party it was in Sinatra's days, and lots of time, energy, and money are expended to leave home, so why travel? How long do the  personal benefits of travel last?

Getting away from home and stepping outside of your usual routine is beneficial for both mind and body. The long-lasting personal benefits of visiting a foreign country far outweigh the costs and time to get there.

The great travel writer Pico Lyer said: "Travel is not really about leaving our homes, but leaving our habits." Here are seven ways that travel, especially  international travel, will enhance your life.

Travel Sharpens the Mind

You've done your old routine for so many years that you could run through it on autopilot. Being dropped into a new environment engages a dormant part of your mind and gets those synapses firing again.

Suddenly, you'll be required to navigate unfamiliar places, read foreign languages , try new things, make quick decisions, and choose your new eating and sleeping schedule.

Unlike at home, all the new sights, sounds, and places will require mental processing and filing. Your brain will welcome the workout! Once you return home, you'll be sharper than ever for better organizing and sprucing up your daily routine.

A Shift in Perspective

"Nobody comes back from a journey the way they started it." — Unknown

Being exposed to new cultures and people will greatly shift your paradigm and create a healthier perspective once you return back home. Seeing different social classes creates compassion and really makes you feel more blessed and content. Large portions of the world's population have to deal with daily threats such as hunger, disease , and landmines .

A hard day at work suddenly doesn't seem so bad when you see people in developing countries toiling in sun-scorched fields from morning to dark, or begging for a drink of water.

A Chance to Try New Things

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." — Ralph Waldo Emerson

While you may branch out at home from time to time by trying new restaurants or splurging on expenditures, traveling kicks you out of the comfort zone and forces you, for better or worse, to try new things!

Even if you don't enjoy your first attempt at scuba diving , at least you'll be able to relate in a new way the next time you see it in a movie or hear someone talking about it.

Becoming a well-rounded individual enhances self-confidence and will help you find new material for conversation in social settings with a wider variety of people.

Who knows, you may accidentally discover your new favorite food or find out that you want to pursue a new career in karaoke!

Meet New People

"A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles." — Tim Cahill

You'll meet far more friendly people on the road than you will under ordinary circumstances at home.

Other travelers are always looking to share experiences, give tips on places to go, and meet people from all over. Striking up a conversation with other travelers is extraordinarily easy.

A polite "so where are you from?" breaks the ice quite easily and may lead to lasting friendships with people from all over the world.

See the Real Deal

"To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries." — Aldous Huxley

Until you visit a place and form your own opinions, your understanding only comes from what you were taught in school, read in books, or saw on media, which may or may not be a complete truth.

Don't over-research your upcoming destination in guidebooks. Do your best to avoid building a bias toward a place or installing mental filters before you visit. Wait to form your own opinion, remaining objective until you can make up your own mind.

Exercise and Sunshine

Sure, you could just go sweat in the gym under fluorescent lighting, but chances are that you'll be much more active from day to day while on the road, regardless of whether your trip is an adventurous one or simply a relaxing beach trip .

You could be exploring new cities on foot, hiking , swimming, walking between places, and hopefully soaking up some needed sunshine while doing so. And it's guaranteed to smell better than the gym.

Come Home Renewed

After stepping away from home for a while, you'll return with renewed energy, a new set of mental filters, and ready to take on the next big project or challenge. Call it a life reboot.

Getting away for some time, even though it requires effort, will greatly enhance your attitude and productivity once you return home. Sure, you may have some mail piled up and matters to attend, but those are simple challenges easily knocked out.

Breaking up the monotony for a while is a great way to reduce stress and give your life an injection of excitement. Don't be surprised if shortly after your return, you're already counting down days until the next trip!

Globetrotter’s Glossary Of Travel Terms

go and travel meaning

Wanderlust is a concept that underpins many of the other terms on this list. It is defined as “a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about.”

As Vladimir Nabokov alluded to in his first novel Mary , wanderlust often takes hold in the months leading up to summer: “Nostalgia in reverse, the longing for yet another strange land, grew especially strong in spring.”

A wayfarer is someone who travels, especially on foot.

The term entered English in the mid-1400s as a combination of way meaning “a path or course leading from one place to another,” and fare , a verb meaning “to go; travel.”

Ray-Ban borrowed this poetic-sounding word as the name for their classic model of sunglasses, which took the 1980s by storm thanks in part to Tom Cruise, who famously sported them in the iconic 1980s film Risky Business , and Canadian crooner Corey Hart who invited a generation to consider the merits of sporting shades post-nightfall with his hit single “Sunglasses at Night.”

cosmopolitan

As an adjective, cosmopolitan means “at home all over the world,” and as a noun, “a citizen of the world.”

It can be traced to the philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, who first applied the Greek term kosmos to the order of the universe or world. The Stoics of ancient Greece developed an ideology of cosmopolitanism that broke from assumptions of Greek superiority, emphasizing instead a shared morality among all people.

Surprising as it may be, the Stoics are not responsible for the pink cocktail that gained notoriety during the run of Sex and the City ; this potable sense of cosmopolitan arose a couple millennia later in the mid-1980s.

Sometimes a weekend getaway can satisfy one’s wanderlust, but other times a longer stay or sojourn is in order. This word can function as a noun or a verb, with senses of “a temporary stay” and “to stay for a time in a place; live temporarily,” respectively.

It can be traced to the Latin word subdiurnare , which translates roughly as “to spend the day.”

Today’s definition of traipse emphasizes an easygoing manner of travel: “to walk or go aimlessly or idly or without finding or reaching one’s goal.”

But, over the course of its lifetime, traipse has emphasized elements of untidiness, as in the following definition from Oxford English Dictionary : “to walk with the dress trailing or bedraggled.” An association with gender also shows up in the related word trape , a now-obsolete verb meaning “to walk or run about in an ideal or slatternly manner”; slattern is a pejorative term for a slovenly, untidy woman or girl.

globetrotter

In addition to describing a theatrical basketball player who calls Harlem home, the word globetrotter can refer to a person who travels regularly or frequently to countries all over the world.

A trot is a gait of horses that’s in between a walk and a run. By the mid-1500s, the word trotter was being used to refer to a person who moves about briskly and constantly. Globetrotter emerged in English three centuries later, in the late 1800s, as technologies were evolving on land and on sea that facilitated travel of a more frequent and widespread variety.

peregrinate

This term means “to travel or journey, especially to walk on foot.” It can be traced to the Latin peregrinari meaning “to travel abroad.”

By the time peregrinate entered English in the late 1500s, English speakers were already using its adjectival cousin for a migratory bird renowned for its speed, the peregrine falcon .

If you prefer epicurean adventures over pilgrimages, gallivant may be your travel term of choice. This word means “to wander about, seeking pleasure or diversion.”

Etymologists posit that the term could be a humorous variation of the verb gallant . Both of these verbs carry senses involving flirtation, which adds an element of intrigue to any vacation.

Hello. Could you tell me if you could replace "traveling" for "going traveling" and "going for a trip" to make similar meanings? a) I'm thinking of traveling in Canada by bicycle next month. b) I'm thinking of going traveling in Canada by bicyle next month. c) I'm thinking of going for a trip in Canada by bicyle next month. Especially in b), would you use the expression just like "go fishing" or "go skiing"? Thank you.

Hello Eng. I would take (a) to mean that you'll be travelling round Canada next month, and that because your car has broken down you'll be obliged to do so by bicycle. (b) and (c) sound more like pleasure trips, but (c) sounds like you have a definite itinerary in mind, whereas (b) sounds like you will just take each day as it comes. Does that help?

Hello, are there any differences between "go for a trip", "go out for a trip", "go for traveling", "go out for traveling", and "go traveling"? Thank you.

“go traveling” “going to travel” “I’m going traveling next month” “He’s going to travel to Japan”

  • Why did you respond with "Hmm..."?
  • Your feedback will not be shown to other users.

So “go to” has to be followed by an object/place. “travel” is a verb. So “go to travel” is not grammatically correct. Examples: “go to Japan” “go to my house” “go to the market” Since “travel” is a verb, you can replace “go” with “travel”. Examples: “travel to China” “travel to America” “travel to the moon” go to トラベル・キャンペーン here, “go to” is the name of the travel campaign. it doesn’t mean “go to travel” is the right grammar. The exception is that if you use “travel” as a noun and say “travels”. then you can say “go on travels”. But this use is more poetic and for literature than for conversation. Example: “He likes to go on travels to many different countries”. I hope this is clear! Let me know if you have questions ☺️

One more thing: you can say “go travel to” examples: “i’ll go travel to his house” “i want to go travel to iceland” and you can take out “to” if you don’t want to say an object/place. examples: “i’ll go travel/traveling” “i want to go travel”.

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

go and travel meaning

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

  • ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

Felucca boats sailing on the River Nile, at Aswan. Trees are dotted among the buildings in the background.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.

I’m a travel expert. These are 5 things I would never do when planning a trip

Traveling is one of life’s great joys — from seeing new places to meeting people from another culture, seeing the wider world is something to be treasured. But even the most experienced travelers can find some moments stressful.

On May 8, travel journalist Mark Ellwood joined TODAY to talk about some of his best tips after a lifetime of living out of his own suitcase.

He offered five things he would never do if you want your trip to go off without a hitch.

1. Travel without insurance

Ellwood says that travel insurance is often very low cost and can save you in a pinch.

“It’s the same price as a cup of coffee per day, give or take, and buys you peace of mind when something goes awry," he said.

Ellwood notes many credit cards offer built-in insurance for any trips purchased on that card but he is also a fan of travelinsurance.com or insuremytrip.com. Both are marketplaces where you can shop around for the best plan.

2. Overlook considering all airports

While it might not be the most convenient, Ellwood suggests checking the wider metropolitan area for flights at nearby airports.

“Look for airports nearby — you might score a deal better by searching for, perhaps, Stewart, New York, rather than Newark, (New Jersey)," he said. "Always check nearby airports to both your point of origin and destination.”

3. Exclude lesser-known carriers

“Don’t forget lesser-known carriers," Ellwood says, adding that Breeze Airways his is go-to carrier. He notes that Breeze's home bases are in the southeast and include the following:

“Don’t forget lesser-known carriers,” Ellwood says, adding that Breeze Airways his is go-to carrier. He notes that Breeze’s home bases are in the Southeast and include the following:

  • Charleston, South Carolina
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Norfolk, Virginia
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Fort Myers, Florida

4. Neglect geotagging luggage

There's no worse feeling while traveling than waiting for your luggage to appear on the baggage carousel, only for it to never materialize.

But geotagging your luggage can at least help you track it down.

“Geotag your luggage — whether AirTag or similar," Ellwood says. "You’ll always know where your luggage is ... or isn’t."

If your bag doesn't make it to your final destination, you can always tell the airline where it is to help them track it down.

5. Think there’s a magic time to book a flight

Despite years of rumors, there's really no day or time that's best to book your travel.

“There is no magic day date time to score a deal," Ellwood says. "Instead, the best time is whenever you receive an alert that your route’s gone on sale."

The way to do this is to track your flights ahead of booking them. Ellwood suggests using Google Flights — just type in where and when you're looking to fly, then toggle the alert tab so you'll be notified of any changes.

"This allows you to watch how much it’ll cost and swoop in the moment an airline cuts the price when you want to fly," he says.

Just because you’re on a budget and don’t have a ton of money doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be allowed to take a vacation. There are plenty of places nationwide where you can have a great time for just a few hundred dollars. Here are some of the spots travel agents say you can hit this year and not worry about spending too much .

Burlington, VT

“[Burlington] is set on the shores of Lake Champlain, with a busy downtown with boutique shops and cafés,” said Alex Cornici, CEO and founder at The Traveler . Cornici also said that the beautiful waterfront makes for a great spot to have a picnic and watch the sun set. There are also lots of picturesque bike paths for the outdoorsy types. During the summer, you can find hotels for around $150 a night, which gives you a few hundred dollars to spend on food during a weekend trip.

Try This: 8 Tips To Fly Business Class for the Price of Economy

Savannah, GA

Cornici recommended Savannah for travelers looking for something chic. “Its historic district is full of marvelous architecture, leafy squares filled with Spanish moss and a waterfront scene that’s lively in its own right,” Cornici said. “Stroll the cobblestone streets, drop into art galleries and historic homes or take a ghost tour. The ambiance offered by Savannah is one of its kinds.”

Try going during the week, rather than on a weekend and you can likely score hotels for under $70 a night during July.

Duluth offers many things to do for visitors, including harbor cruises, air tours and the Great Lakes Aquarium. “This port city on Lake Superior reveals an example of great natural beauty with a cool vibe,” Cornici said.

“Enjoy hiking or biking along the lakefront, with a stop to see the massive aerial lift bridge and Canal Park on the waterfront, home to what may be the most diverse mix of dining options in all of Duluth.” June and July can be pretty expensive to stay in a hotel in Duluth, but during August, the prices tend to be lower, so aim to have your trip then.

Cheyenne, WY

“For a taste of the Wild West, take a trip to Cheyenne, Wyoming,” Cornici said. Cheyenne is great for those interested in Western heritage without feeling like you’re in an all-out tourist trap, he said. You can check out the Frontier Days Old West Museum and see a rodeo performance. But, that’s not the only type of entertainment Cheyenne offers.

“Hiking and park exploration in state parks can easily be accommodated,” Cornici said. If you go during August, you can easily spend under $100 a night for lodging.

New Orleans, LA

You might be thinking New Orleans is such a popular destination, there’s no way it’s affordable, but Christopher Falvey, a partner at Unique NOLA Tours , begged to differ. “New Orleans, especially during the summer, is a super inexpensive vacation,” Falvey said. “You could easily do a weekend for $500 or less. The state of Louisiana has one of the lowest costs of living in the U.S. and that includes New Orleans.”

Falvey said that you can always look for tours offering discounts on their activities. If you look for bargains, you can always find them. Plus, aiming to travel during the week rather than a weekend will guarantee you lower prices and Falvey said you won’t be missing out. “We have a ton of summer festivals and it isn’t like Bourbon Street ever slows down.”

Cleveland, OH

“Cleveland is one of our favorite places to travel on a budget,” Becky Martin, the content marketing strategist at Seven Corners Travel Insurance said. Martin recommended Cleveland for its affordability. Cleveland offers the RTA trolley, which is free for you to use on weekdays. Just another reason to consider taking a few days during the week for your next trip.

Martin said there is something for every type of traveler to love in Cleveland. “If you’re into art, the Cleveland Museum of Art offers free general admission year-round. Cleveland Cultural Gardens and Lakeview Cemetery are full of sculptures that, if the weather is nice, are worth exploring. For nature lovers, the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse, full of unexpected gardens and exhibits, has free admission and parking. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also close to downtown Cleveland and is one of our country’s few free national parks.”

It’s easy to find rooms for under $100 to $150 a night when you check out dates in June, so you can start making your plans now.

Never been to Colorado? Maybe this is the summer to scope it out. Martin recommended Denver for outdoorsy types. “Red Rocks Amphitheatre is free to visit for hiking, biking and tours as long as there isn’t a concert scheduled.”

Martin also said that getting around Denver is pretty easy and buying a CityPASS gets you some great perks. “The Colorado capitol building and U.S. Mint both offer free tours and if you buy a CityPASS, you’ll find good deals on other major attractions like the Children’s Museum, Downtown Aquarium and Museum of Nature and Science.”

Hotels in Denver can be pricey, but even just seven miles outside of Denver, you can start to find hotels for under $200 a night.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle travel to Nigeria: What to know about their trip

Harry and Meghan are spending three days in Nigeria.

Prince Harry and Meghan , the Duchess of Sussex, are no longer working royals -- having stepped away from the role four years ago -- but for the next several days, the Sussexes will be on a trip that looks similar to their royal tours of the past .

Harry and Meghan, who now live in California, on Friday will begin a three-day visit to Nigeria, a country in West Africa that they are both visiting for the first time.

Harry and Meghan's visit has no affiliation with Britain's royal family , and is instead at the invitation of the country's Chief of Defense Staff, its highest-ranking military official.

Their three-day visit though will have them interacting with not only military officials but also locals, including women leaders and servicemen and women.

On Friday, Harry and Meghan plan to meet with the Chief of Defense Staff, as well as visit a school together. Harry will also meet with injured servicemembers at a local military hospital, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to ABC News.

On Saturday, the couple plans to attend a training session for Nigeria: Unconquered, a nonprofit organization that is affiliated with the Invictus Games , a Paralympic-style competition for wounded service members that Harry founded in 2014.

Meghan is also scheduled to co-host an event on women in leadership with the director general of the World Trade Organization.

On Sunday, their final day in Nigeria, Harry and Meghan will attend a basketball clinic and a "cultural reception," according to their spokesperson.

The couple will also attend a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

Just as they did during their days as working royals, Harry and Meghan will be accompanied on the trip by a pool reporter and photographer, according to their spokesperson.

"It’s hard," Meghan told ITV anchor Tom Bradby for the documentary, "Harry & Meghan: An African Journey." "I don’t think anybody could understand that."

Just months later, in January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced to the world that they planned to "step back" from their duties as senior members of Britain's royal family.

Shortly after that announcement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the Sussexes would no longer be "working members" of the royal family.

Since then, the couple has settled in California with their two young children, Archie and Lilibet, and become financially independent, taking on new roles in the entertainment and philanthropy worlds.

Harry and Meghan have returned together to the United Kingdom since their departure less than a handful of times, most recently attending the funeral for the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Which purchases count as travel with Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve?

Benét J. Wilson

Editor's Note

Thanks to its plethora of premium travel perks, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is well-known in the travel credit card space. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the Sapphire Reserve's mid-tier sibling that features a $95 annual fee — which is also the more affordable card considering the Reserve's annual fee is $550 — and remains a top pick, winning Best Travel Rewards Credit Card for the sixth straight year at the 2023 TPG Awards .

No matter which Sapphire card you have, Chase clearly defines what counts as travel. Both cards generously award for travel booked through Chase Travel℠ and all other travel purchases.

We'll go over the purchases that count (and don't count) toward earning bonus points in this guide.

How many points do the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Preferred cards earn on travel?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve awards 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase Travel and 5 points per dollar on flights booked through Chase Travel.

But suppose you're looking to book directly with the airline, hotel or another company or get awarded for other travel purchases like taxi rides and parking fees. In that case, you'll still earn 3 points per dollar on these purchases.

go and travel meaning

The Sapphire Preferred earns 5 points per dollar on all travel purchases booked through Chase Travel and 2 points per dollar on other travel purchases.

You'll also earn a boosted rate of 10 and 5 points per dollar spent on Lyft rides on the Reserve and Preferred, respectively (through March 2025).

'Travel,' according to Chase

The Chase Travel portal allows you to book various types of travel. For "all other travel purchases," here's how Chase defines it:

Merchants in the travel category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.

Compared to bonus categories from other credit cards, Chase's travel category is extremely generous.

While cards such as the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer bonus points for airfare purchases made directly with the airline (with a spending cap of $500,000 on the Amex Platinum per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar), the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve cards let you earn a bonus on virtually every trip-related charge.

go and travel meaning

The travel category encompasses a wide variety of purchases, from hotels and airfare (which doesn't have to be booked directly with the airline) to cruises, tolls and even parking fees. Uber and Airbnb purchases count as travel as well.

The following purchases do not apply toward the 2 or 3-points-per-dollar bonus categories on these cards, but most of them shouldn't be a huge surprise or disappointment:

Merchants in this category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages. Some merchants that provide transportation and travel-related services are not included in this category; for example, real estate agents, educational merchants arranging travel, in-flight goods and services, on-board cruise line goods and services, sightseeing activities, excursions, tourist attractions, RV and boat rentals, merchants within hotels and airports, public campgrounds and merchants that rent vehicles for the purpose of hauling. Purchases from gift card merchants or merchants that sell points or miles will not qualify in the travel category.

A few notable travel-related charges that have not been posted as travel for the purposes of bonus points with Chase for TPG staffers in the recent past include an RV rental as well as some vacation rentals via Vrbo and similar services. Whether a vacation home rental automatically codes as travel depends on whether an individual or a conglomerate operates it. In the latter case, that charge may code as "professional services" instead of travel.

If you're ever unsure whether a given purchase counts as travel, it could be worth making a small charge and checking whether it earns any bonus points on your online Chase account.

Additionally, suppose you feel like a travel purchase should have earned bonus points but didn't. In that case, you can always try calling or secure messaging Chase and requesting consideration for that charge to be awarded points as a travel charge. Even if you don't get the outcome you're looking for, you'll at least get some clarity on how certain charges are coded and can plan future spending accordingly.

What does Chase typically count as travel purchases?

  • Campgrounds
  • Car rental agencies (excludes RV and boat rentals)
  • Cruise lines
  • Discount travel sites
  • Parking lots and garages
  • Passenger trains
  • Toll bridges and highways
  • Travel agencies
  • Vacation rentals (including some VRBO rentals operated by an individual )

What does Chase typically not count as travel purchases?

  • Educational merchants arranging travel
  • Gift card merchants
  • Inflight goods and services
  • Merchants that rent vehicles for the purpose of hauling
  • Merchants within hotels and airports
  • Onboard cruise line goods and services
  • Purchasing points or miles
  • Public campgrounds
  • Real estate agents
  • RV and boat rentals
  • Sightseeing activities
  • Tourist attractions
  • Vacation rentals ( some VRBO rentals operated by a conglomerate rather than an individual )

Bottom line

Cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred have plenty of opportunities to earn 3 or 2 points per dollar spent, respectively, on "other travel purchases." Based on TPG's valuations , that means you could be getting a return of up to 6.15% on these purchases, and you can put your points to use with Chase's airline and hotel partners .

On top of that, these Chase cards have some of the most generous travel and purchase protections on the market, making either card a valuable addition to your wallet.
