Horseback Riding in Wyoming
Washakie wilderness pack trip from bitterroot cow camp.
Photo Journey:
The route of your pack trip takes you over spectacular Wyoming mountain passes of between 11,000 and 12,000 feet and through pristine valleys with little human presence. The mighty rivers of America have their beginnings here as tiny springs. Each valley has its own distinct character with meadows of lupine in one and craggy cliffs in another. The itinerary stays in each camp for two nights to allow guests to ride out for the day, hike, fish, or just relax without worrying about packing up each morning. This wonderful adventure provides an opportunity to see the glorious, untamed western landscape which is unchanged since the early explorers first visited it.
Accommodations
Nights will be spent camping in tents. Tents and pads are provided.
Meals & Drink
Hot breakfasts will be cooked and served each morning before packing up camp and riding off for the day. Lunches will be picnic stops along the trail. Dinner each evening will be cooked over an open fire. Wine will be provided with dinner but guests are asked to bring their own supply of hard liquor. Remember this is a pack trip so limited space is available.
Ride & Horse Details

At the ranch. We can provide details for services for transportation from the Jackson Hole airport or the Riverton airport.
Tour Itinerary
When you arrive at the ranch you will be greeted by your guides and meet your mounts. You are welcome to come to the ranch for breakfast, which is served 7:30 – 9:00. We ask that you be at the ranch by 9:30 am, so that we can get your items packed before the 10:30 am departure. Keep in mind that all of your gear will be carried by pack horses up the mountain, so it will need to be packed in stuff sacks that can be easily loaded (rolling suitcases don’t pack well). Sacks can be provided for you if you do not have your own.
The first ride traverses a large, open, watershed before climbing through several aspen groves en route to a riparian basin named Wayne’s Hole. After a leisurely break for a picnic, the group will follow an old logging road out of the basin that winds through a aspens and alpine meadows. When you reach the top, you will ride past springs feeding Wayne’s Creek which nourish the willows that feed all manner of wildlife ranging from moose to black bears. Picking your way down a small, timbered ridge, you will approach an old cow camp, your first campsite. It is located in a picturesque, creek-fed horse pasture that has been home to many generations of working cowboys responsible for caring for the cattle on their summer range. For you, it will be home for the next two nights.
There are two options for the second day’s ride. Groups interested in a short cattle-focused experience can ride along with the guides as they check on livestock and look for predator kills. If cattle don’t pique your interest, the group can tour Bear Basin. This ride departs the camp across an exposed ridgeline. The views to the left and right showcase the ancient volcanic past of the Absaroka Mountains, which predate the Rockies. Straight ahead looms Castle Rock, and behind you will see the jagged, granite peaks of the Wind River Range. From here, your guides will follow a game trail with sweeping views of the basin as you descend towards its floor. After lunch beside one of the Bear Creek’s rushing tributaries, you will climb through a chain of meadows on your way out of the basin and back towards the camp.
The third morning is moving day. Your guides will prepare a quick breakfast and get to work packing up the camp for the next leg of the journey. Tents, sleeping bags, clothing, food, and cookware will be carefully loaded onto a string of sturdy packhorses. The ride from the Cow Camp to Tipi Meadows offers some of the most dramatic scenery and rugged terrain in the state. You will skirt the head of Castle Creek and ride up and over a ridge into the next drainage. Following the high contours of ancient lava flows; you will weave your way from the headwaters of one drainage to the next, taking in alternate views of the Absarokas. After riding through a stand of gnarled juniper trees, you traverse a bentonite wash before breaking into the open at the base of Castle Rock. From there you will zigzag down the face of an alpine bowl and follow the crystalline waters of Tipi Creek to your campsite.
The Tipi Meadows camp is nestled between two forks of Tipi Creek just upstream of a series of dramatic waterfalls. High timbered ridges teaming with elk and mule deer ring the meadows. Set deep in the Washakie Wilderness area, you will be miles away from any form of mechanized travel; if you are looking for a remote getaway, this is it.
This day begins with a steep climb to the base of Steamboat Rock. After taking in the view above a series of crevasses, you will ride above the tree line to on a broad saddle between Steamboat and Castle Rocks. The rich alpine grass is a favorite summer food source for elk, and it’s not uncommon to see herds of 100 or more cows and calves chirruping to each other as they move away across the steep mountain slopes. You will break for lunch on a knoll with a commanding view of Tipi Meadows below. The ride back from the camp follows the opposite fork of Tipi Creek from the previous days’ journey and you will return to camp by late afternoon, with plenty of time to read, hike, or just relax.
The last ride is certainly not the least. Your guides will pack up the Tipi Meadows camp after a quick breakfast and begin the long descent to the East Fork Basin. The trail follows high above Tipi Creek from ancient lava flows that are popular elk lookouts to the creek’s terminus. The basin is a broad riparian bowl that feeds a latticework of watercourses making up the East Fork River. You will picnic on a sandy cut bank with large deposits of petrified wood and fossilized plants. The final leg of the trip will take you out of the basin and across a broad sagebrush plain with beautiful views of the Wind River Valley. After a well-deserved soak in the river for the horses, you will dismount at the ranch with memories to last a lifetime. Departure from the ranch at about 4pm.

My Bitterroot Ranch trip was perfect. From the moment I arrived at the ranch I was welcomed and felt very at home and well cared for. The barns/ranches that I have visited previously have had so many rules of where not to go, which pastures to stay out of, horses to stay away from. At Bitterroot I was encouraged to go visit the horses and foals, was told to please go into the different pastures, it's good exposure for the horses. The wranglers that led the rides were extremely knowledge of the ranch history and landscape, I loved hearing all they had to share. The ranch and lodging accommodations are rustic, just as I wanted but may not be ideal for someone looking for more "luxury." If you want to be around horses, have amazing rides and be immersed in a true horse ranch experience than this is the place for you.

Everything You Need to Know About a Wyoming Horse Pack Trip
Home » Everything You Need to Know About a Wyoming Horse Pack Trip
Details on a multi-night horse pack trip in the Washakie Wilderness with Elk Fork Outfitters. This guided adventure is an incredible way to see Wyoming’s natural wonders, and the food and glamping-style accommodations bring modern comforts to the backcountry.
My fondest childhood memories are centered around horses, so I had long dreamt of venturing into the wilderness on a pack trip. Connecting with nature on horseback is equal parts exciting and relaxing, and it offers a glimpse into the history of the Wild West. Horse packing also allows you to bring all kinds of amenities deep into the mountains, and guides are responsible for everything from food to safety, making this an easy adventure to plan. After chatting with a few companies, I chose Elk Fork Outfitters , which is owned and managed by guides Seth and Alden Ballard, and based in Cody, Wyoming.
Pack Trip Basics
Pack trips are typically five to seven days, and most outfitters require a minimum of four guests to book. Last summer I joined a group of five in the Washakie Wilderness, which is part of the Shoshone National Forest . The group had already chosen their trip dates, and since they were intermediate-level riders (and happy to have me tag along), Alden and I agreed it would be a perfect fit. Though Elk Fork Outfitters will take up to ten guests on pack trips, they prefer smaller parties, as it creates a more intimate experience. Some outfitters arrange custom hunting and pack trips like the Ballards, while others offer packaged trips with set dates and up to a dozen spots.
Solitude and scenery abound in the Washakie Wilderness. Photo: Elisabeth Brentano.
Beginners are welcome to book with Elk Fork Outfitters, but they will be limited with backcountry riding, as some trails are long and can be technical in spots. If you are inexperienced but determined to go on a pack trip, take lessons and go on a few trail rides to learn the basics. If you are experienced but rusty, consider reacquainting your muscles with a saddle before your trip, as you’ll be riding for four to six hours each day.
Planning and Accommodations
Pack trips in northwest Wyoming generally run between June and early September, and guests should consider booking 9-12 months in advance. August brings the most ideal weather to the region, with daytime highs in the upper 70s and overnight lows in the upper 40s. Outfitters send a detailed packing list ahead of the trip, and guests are responsible for bringing basic camp gear, including sleeping bags and pillows. The spacious wall tents have cots, tables and gas-powered lamps, and camp chairs and all kitchen utensils are provided, along with bear-proof storage for toiletries and food.
The Washakie is home to grizzly bears and black bears, so it is important to be bear aware. In addition to carrying bear spray and making plenty of noise on the trail, equestrians and backpackers should bring bear canisters or bear hangs for food, trash, toiletries and any scented items kept at camp.
For more tips on respecting Wyoming’s wilderness, please visit the WY Responsibly page.

The camp kitchen is adjacent to the dining tent, and the outhouse, which consists of a sturdy composting toilet, is just a short walk from camp. Seth and Alden haul jugs of water to the kitchen each day, but guests are responsible for bringing a portable water filtration system, like a Sawyer Squeeze or Lifestraw. We had access to a gravity bag shower with hot water, but most of us jumped in the creek after our daily rides, so be sure to pack a swimsuit and a camp towel. All tack is provided, but helmets are not.
Our entry point was Elk Fork Trailhead, which sits between Yellowstone National Park and Cody on U.S Highway 14/16/20, aka the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway . In addition to several first-come, first-serve U.S. Forest Service campgrounds less than a mile from the trailhead, nearby Buffalo Bill State Park has nearly 100 campsites that can be reserved online. Wapiti is home to a handful of lodges, and Cody, which is 30 miles east of the trailhead, has three dozen hotels and a number of fabulous restaurants .
Daily Rundown

Seth and Alden greeted us by the fire around 7 a.m. every morning with smiles and a pot of coffee, and breakfast was served shortly thereafter. We hit the trail by 9 a.m. with bagged lunches and snacks, and we returned to camp around 3 p.m., giving us plenty of time to relax. Appetizers were served around 5:30 p.m., and guests were called to dinner by 6:30 p.m. Gathering around the fire for a nightcap and stories was the perfect way to end the day, and most everyone was tucked into bed by 9 p.m.
Whether it was flatbread, doughnuts, vegetable fritters or steaks, guests enjoyed a variety of stellar camp meals made from scratch. Photo: Elisabeth Brentano.
Guests have the option of riding, hiking, fishing or even lounging at camp during the day, but everyone in our group was keen to maximize their time in the saddle. Most days we rode for four to five hours on easy to moderate trails with a handful of creek crossings. However, on the third day of the trip, we logged nearly seven hours on a trail that would not have been suitable for beginners, as it ascended steep switchbacks and required us to hand walk our rides downhill in several spots. We also encountered a few small logs that some horses and mules gently jumped, and we had to duck around low branches from time to time. Each day we hopped on and off multiple times, but any time we needed help with a tack adjustment or mounting, Seth and Alden had us covered.

When it comes to pairing riders with horses and mules, the Ballards are expert matchmakers. I have plenty of experience in an English saddle, but I haven’t done much riding in the mountains, and I told Alden I was nervous about steep, exposed sections of the trail. For the trails with significant elevation gain, I rode a sure-footed mule named Phil who navigated the rocky terrain like an ATV. Phil’s smooth, careful strides and mellow personality helped me relax – and soak up the beauty around me.
Elk Fork Outfitters has a knack for matching each guest with the perfect mount. All of their horses and mules are capable, confident and have excellent ground manners. Photo: Elisabeth Brentano.
Closing Thoughts
Merging my love for horses and off-grid adventures made for a dream trip. I marveled at the mix of nostalgia and newness I was experiencing. I admired craggy peaks listening to the rhythm of hoofbeats and giggled when Phil got fiendish about munching on every patch of lupine he could find along the trail. I’ve spent a lot of time in the backcountry, but adding horses to the equation elevated the experience to a whole new level.
After riding to this vista point, we tied up our horses in the shade and took a leisurely lunch break. Photo: Elisabeth Brentano.
On our final morning in the Washakie, we sipped hot coffee and took turns signing the Elk Fork Outfitters guestbook. As I flipped through to find a blank page, a sketch of a horse caught my eye, and the entry brilliantly summarized everything I was feeling. “ People talk about how riding horses when you’re not used to it will stretch muscles you didn’t even know you had ,” the guest wrote. “ But something else happens out here, too — you stretch senses you didn’t even know you had. I came here as an artist, and being in these forests and streams has helped me see things in a way that made me feel like part of it, not just a visitor .”

In 1930, Charlie Moore bought the Simpson Lake Cabins from three ingenious men who built a fishing camp next to the Simpson Lake shores. For over 60 years, CM guests could ride to Simpson and spend one or two nights during their ranch stay. When the area became part of the Fitzpatrick Wilderness, the CM could no longer use the cabins and established a fine base camp near Union Lake, where today guests still experience spectacular fishing, riding and sightseeing.
The CM Ranch offers pack trips in conjunction with, or separately from traditional week-long dude ranch vacations. Guests can go to our base camp at Union Lake, where Simpson and other glacier-fed lakes are just a short ride away, or take a progressive trip where they can camp right next to Simpson Lake, or camp next to a different lake each night.
The unique location of the CM treats viewers to geologic exposures in the glacial valley which result in an extraordinary display. From the ranch, the horseback ride to our Union Lake base camp takes about 5 or 6 hours, and traverses through creek bottoms, forests and meadows. Along the way, one often sees deer, elk, moose, antelope, snowshoe hares and picas (a small mountain rodent that spends its summer storing hay for the winter).
Progressive trips go even further into the interior of the Fitzpatrick Wilderness, where the stunning terrain and cold mountain lakes have seen very little human impact. For many years, guests of all ages have experienced the tremendous beauty and solitude of the Wind River Mountains on pack trips led by our experienced guide and cook, who devote themselves to showing people the very finest and detailed areas of Wyoming.
We require a minimum of 2 nights and at least 2 people for pack trips.
2024 Pack Trip Rates:
- $275 per person per night if taken during a regular ranch stay
- $300 per person per night if taken before, after, or without a ranch stay
Applicable Wyoming sales tax and a customary 15% gratuity are added to final bill.

“ We had an awesome trip! I understand the weather made it very tough hunting for most but thankfully we both scored on good bulls. Camp life was great from the food to the conversation. Horses were exceptional as well. Could not have done it without them. This hunt is the real deal. It is tough but a great experience that I would recommend to anyone! Heath Till Client
“ Words cannot express the amount of fun and excitement we had on our trip. Everything was first class from the horses packing in to the accommodations in camp. The guides were top notch and done everything in their ability to put us on bulls. We all felt like you ran a first class wilderness hunting camp. Troy Client

Ultimate Packing List for Yellowstone National Park: Everything You Need for the Perfect Adventure

If you’re planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park, let me be the first to say, you’re in for an unforgettable experience ! Yellowstone has something for everyone: stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, geothermal features, and endless trails for hiking and exploration. Having visited Yellowstone three times, I’ve learned a thing or two about packing right. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, here’s my detailed packing list to make sure you’re fully prepared.
Table of Contents
1. Clothing Essentials
Yellowstone’s weather is unpredictable. It can be sunny and warm one minute, then cold and windy the next, especially if you’re visiting higher elevations. Here’s what I recommend packing for all seasons:
- Moisture-wicking base layer : Breathable, sweat-wicking shirts and leggings to keep you comfortable on hikes.
- Fleece or insulating layer : A cozy mid-layer is key for chilly mornings and evenings.
- Waterproof outer shell : A lightweight, packable rain jacket is a must. Afternoon thunderstorms are common!
- Even in summer, it can be cool in the mornings, so long pants are essential. I love pants that convert to shorts for the warm afternoons.
- Especially if you’re heading into Yellowstone’s backcountry or planning early morning excursions for wildlife viewing.
- Break them in before your trip to avoid blisters on those long hikes! A pair with ankle support is a great idea given the rocky terrain.
- Wool is amazing because it regulates temperature and wicks away moisture, keeping your feet warm and dry.
2. Hiking Gear
Yellowstone’s trails range from easy boardwalks to challenging hikes, so you’ll want to be well-prepared for a day of adventure.
- Look for one with a hydration reservoir and enough space to stash snacks, layers, and essentials.
- Staying hydrated at elevation is critical. Pack at least 2 liters of water for longer hikes, and consider a water filter if you’re planning to refill at streams.
- These can really help on the steeper trails or uneven terrain.
- A wide-brimmed hat will protect you from the sun, and polarized sunglasses are great for cutting glare when you’re trying to spot wildlife.
- Mosquitoes and other bugs can be fierce, especially near lakes and streams.
- The sun is strong at higher elevations, so protect your skin.
3. Safety and Navigation Gear
- Bears are common in Yellowstone, so bear spray is essential. Make sure you know how to use it and keep it easily accessible.
- Cell service is spotty in many parts of the park, so having a good ol’ paper map is key. I always grab one at the visitor center.
- A compact kit with bandages, blister treatment, and antiseptic wipes is handy for any scrapes or cuts on the trail.
- If you’re planning on hiking before sunrise or staying out past sunset, a headlamp is a must for finding your way safely.
- You never know when this might come in handy, especially for small gear repairs.
4. Food and Cooking Gear
If you’re staying in the park or camping, having the right food and cooking supplies will keep you fueled for adventure.
- Think energy bars, trail mix, jerky, and dried fruit for easy, packable snacks.
- Refill as you go. A water filtration system or iodine tablets are great for longer hikes where water sources may be available.
- A lightweight stove is perfect for making hot meals at camp.
- If you’re camping, be sure to store all your food in bear-proof containers or use the bear lockers provided by the park.
5. Camping Essentials
If you’re camping in Yellowstone, these are your must-haves:
- Go for a 3-season tent that’s easy to set up and durable enough to handle any weather Yellowstone throws your way.
- Nights in Yellowstone can get chilly, even in summer. I’d recommend a bag rated for at least 30°F.
- A comfortable sleeping pad makes all the difference for a good night’s rest.
- For preparing meals, make sure to pack lightweight cookware and utensils.
- Sitting around the campfire is much better with a comfy camp chair. You’ll thank me later!
6. Photography and Wildlife Viewing Gear
Yellowstone is teeming with wildlife, and the landscapes are jaw-dropping, so be sure to capture those moments.
- Essential for spotting wildlife from a safe distance, especially in the Lamar or Hayden Valleys.
- A good camera with a zoom lens will help you capture Yellowstone’s incredible wildlife and landscapes.
- If you’re into photography, a tripod is great for steady shots, especially during sunrise or sunset.
7. Miscellaneous but Important Items
Sometimes the little things make all the difference.
- Whether it’s an annual pass or just for your trip, don’t forget your entry pass.
Save Money at National Parks
Get a National Parks Pass
Entry to all US national parks at no additional cost for 12 months
- Some places within the park don’t accept credit cards, and it’s always good to have some cash for emergencies.
- For jotting down notes about the wildlife you see or thoughts from your hikes.
- You’ll likely be taking lots of photos and using your phone for maps or research, so keep it charged.
8. What Not to Pack
- These can attract unwanted wildlife attention.
- Pack smart, not heavy! Stick to the essentials and focus on layers.
Yellowstone is a magical place, but its unpredictable weather and rugged terrain mean that packing thoughtfully is key to a successful trip. Use this packing list as a guide, and feel free to tweak it based on your travel plans. Whether you’re hiking to see geysers or spending quiet mornings by a scenic river, being prepared means you can fully enjoy everything Yellowstone has to offer.
If you have any more packing questions or tips, drop them in the comments! Have a fantastic adventure in Yellowstone!
