Self Guided tour to Northern Japan

We wanted a self guided tour but not to the usual tourist places in Japan. Inside Tours help to come up with a three week trip that ticked all the boxes as we traveled through Northern Japan. Everything was covered for us, accommodation, transfers, train bookings, flight from Sapporo to Haneda, Tokyo. We loved it

Better than I could have imagined!

I had the best time! Everything was perfect! Will was great, easy to talk to and very informative! Made everything very easy. So much to see in Japan, so I would definitely like to return! And will for sure use InsideJapan again! I had one problem the whole trip, which was right at the start with immigration. They only had 2 people working, and 3 flights landed at the same time, meaning it took 3 hours to get through! My concern with that, was that I was told the transfer would only wait an hour and a half after the flight landed... I emailed InsideJapan to let them know I'd probably be later than this and they replied within 5 mins. letting me know they had contacted the transfer company and that they'd wait for me. Which they did! Other than that, Japan really was wonderful and exceeded all my expectations! Everyone was really nice and helpful when needed. Very easy to get around and didn't get lost once! I really can't recommend Japan and InsideJapan enough!

Exceptional service and prompt customer service

Very happy with the service provided by InsideJapan Tours for our independent travel holiday. The logistics behind the itinerary was exceptional with just a couple of small glitches which were quickly addressed by local customer service team. Would highly recommend.

Exceeded expectations

I was on a self guided tour which was very well organised for me in advance. All train tickets and a portable wifi awaited me on arrival. It was a good balance of some private guided tours and some days left to my own devices where I wandered and discovered interesting things.

Brilliant trip!

Brilliant trip! Everything lived up to our expectations. Nothing disappointed. Great itinerary put together by Will- we explored cities -Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, hiked the Kumano Kodo, stayed in Buddhist temple lodgings and enjoyed the preserved post towns on the Nakasendo Way. The attention to detail on our self guided trip was outstanding. Highly recommend.

Inside Japan Created our Amazing Three Week Adventure in Japan

Inside Japan made our trip to Japan perfect. Every aspect of our needs were catered for. The consultant we worked with, Sarah, was able to convert our requirements into the perfect itinerary - in a super fast timeframe. We were delighted with the whole process and will use IJ again.

We throughly enjoyed our Hidden Japan …

We throughly enjoyed our Hidden Japan Tour for both the variety of experiences and the chance to learn more about the people and history of Japan. Our tour guide Mary made everything go smoothly despite the record number of tourists. We also had Inside Japan make post tour arrangements and everything- transportation, hotels, guides went flawlessly.

Culture and Karate

We have recently returned from a three-week customised trip to Honchu and Okinawa with IJT. The first 16 days on Honchu were an incredible journey planned with the help our brilliant consultant Will Gooding. Based around one of the standard self-guided tours, but adding places and events, Will took our initial ideas and interests and created a bespoke trip of a lifetime. We combined city stays in Tokyo, Kanazawa Kyoto and Osaka with hiking parts of the Nakasendo Trail, saying in ancient Ryokans in wonderful old post towns. A couple of nights in Takayama enabled us to visit nearby Hida, where 1000 koi carp swim in the canal. In Tokyo Will secured us tickets to the Sumo, a fabulous experience, while in Kyoto we had our own private tea ceremony. Nothing was too much trouble for Will and IJT. When I left my expensive new reactolite spectacles on the train to Matsumoto, I thought I had seen the last of them. Handed a lost property form by the stationmaster on a village railway platform, I remembered that IJT have a round the clock telephone support. Some 16 days later, with the combined efforts of IJT and the transport police, my spectacles were returned to me on the final leg of our journey. After 15 nights on the mainland we took a flight to Okinawa where we stayed a further five nights. For those of you with an interest in karate, IJT can combine a trip to the island where it first reached Japan, with a trip to the mainland as we did. In Naha we snorkelled and kayaked, along with karate training and a karate tour. A wonderful way to end a magical journey. Knowing that all of our travel arrangements were taken care of, but with the freedom to wander at our own pace, stopping to look at the things that interested us, was for us the best way to immerse ourselves in this beautiful country. The accommodation was superb, the food delicious. Even my concerns about eating raw fish were unfounded, as there were so many other wonderful things to eat. Bathing in an Onsen and a traditional cedar wood bath are must too. All of this made possible by Will Gooding and Inside Japan. Thank you for the memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.

What an amazing holiday in Japan - Tokaido Trail

What an amazing holiday in Japan! ⛩️ The first time I have done a group tour and it was so worth it. Visited so many places and did things I wouldn't have done eg going to Sumo wrestling. It was so well organised and planned. Our tour guide was fantastic and gave me the confidence to navigate the transport system on the extra days I booked. I just need to work out where to go next - perhaps Inside Asia...😍

We had such an incredible time with the InsideJapan trip service. Everyone was timely, the hotels were perfect, and the tours were great and felt very personal. We've been sharing our experience with all our friends, and they've commented on how much we were able to do in the 2 weeks we were there. Our agent Karin was excellent! She made us feel secure throughout our entire trip and the trip exceeded all our expectations!

Exactly what you'd want from a tour company.

My daughter and I loved our time in Japan. It was our first visit and InsideJapan made everything straightforward. Lovely places to stay, a great itinerary, wifi access wherever we went, and all the planes, buses and trains sorted for us in advance. When my jetlagged daughter left her phone on the airport shuttlebus, we made one call to the InsideJapan team and they not only located the phone but made sure it was delivered to our hotel the same day. Special shout out to Luke, who sorted out our itinerary, adjusting it several times until it was exactly what we wanted.

What an amazing experience

What an amazing experience we have had. We have just returned from a wonderful second visit to Japan using Inside Japan Tours. Our travel consultant, Samantha, was brilliant again - we feel that she really understood what we wanted from our holiday and put together an excellent itinerary with us. Our first trip was 18 months ago and it was a wonderful experience but this time we were able to delve more deeply into Japanese culture and life. Since we returned we have been thinking about what we might have done differently and can think of nothing. The local guides were excellent, the travel arrangements for trains and buses were perfect, our accommodation was varied and each place very different but always comfortable. So, we will wholeheartedly be recommending Inside Japan Tours to our friends and family.

Great company. We wanted to travel indipendently with just a little support fir what we didn’t feel confident or didn’t have time to do - hotel and train bookings, suggestions on how to make the most of our 15 days in Japan. We ended up having an amazing time and everything organized perfectly well. Basically all we had to do was relax and enjoy our trip.

Insude Japan goes the extra mile.

Firs class organisation of every aspect of travelling in Japan- hotels, train tickets, tour guides, restaurants, and experiences. Every day had another highlight. A great mix of big cities and small towns. Staying in a ryokan was one of the highlights.

A taste of Japan

Everything worked the way we had anticipated. The accommodation was good, and the guides were really excellent. IJ had good suggestions of places to go and attractions to see to complement our own ideas. The kaiseki dinner in Kyoto was more than we could have anticipated - a great finale to a busy week in Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto.

Absolutely amazing!!! We got so much more out of it then we have ever got from an agency before. Our travel consultant Natasha put together a truly unique and personal Honeymoon for us. We felt very well taken care of from the moment we first wrote an inquiry. It is obvious that they are not only very passionate about Japan but has personal knowledge of the places, the people and the experiences.

Great planning — great execution

Karin gave great advice in the planning stage — alternating between guided and self guided, city vs. country, cultural vs. action. The execution was great -- whenever we had questions, issues or problems, the answers were only a local phone call or email away. Great trip and great advice.

One of the best holidays we’ve ever had! Fantastic travel arrangements made for our two weeks in Japan. Great itinerary moving from city to more rural settings. Fabulous choice of hotels. Trains, metro, ferry, cable car, bicycles all worked to perfection. Don’t book your trip with anybody else - inside Japan couldn’t be faulted

Excellent Trip with One Caveat

Inside Japan did a great job meeting our needs. We were two couples traveling together for 16 days throughout the country. We visited Tokyo, Takayama, Kanazawa, Shirakawago, Kyoto, Osaka, Myajima and Hiroshima. IJ arranged for hotels, city guides, transportation on local and bullet trains and some interesting cultural events. We would have given it a 5-star review but were not happy with the Washington Shinjuku Hotel that we stayed in for 5 days in Tokyo during Golden Week. Although in a great location, the hotel staff were not helpful and our minuscule tired rooms were next to the elevator on a floor overlooking an airshaft. All of our other accommodations were stellar. Despite the disappointment, we still highly recommend.

Date of experience : May 15, 2024

Thank you taking the time to submit your feedback. I'm pleased to hear you had an excellent trip overall. We will certainly take the feedback on the Washington Shinjuku on board and review with our Product team. All the best, Vivienne (Global Head of Sales)

All of our other accommodations were stellar. Despite the disappointment, we still highly recommend.

Date of experience : 15 May 2024

Thank you taking the time to submit your feedback. I'm pleased to hear you had an excellent trip overall. We will certainly take the feedback on the Washington Shinjuku on board and review with our Product team. All the best, Vivienne (Global Head of Sales)

Tailor-made Japan Holidays

Just what is it about japan it’s undeniable — there’s something about this country that sends people a little loopy..

It can’t just be the magnificent food, which somehow manages to encompass everything from exquisite, multi-course haute cuisine to Hello Kitty doughnuts. It’s not just that Tokyo has redefined the modern city, nor its rituals cooked up over centuries of seclusion from the outside world.

Japan is just different. Everything about it. From what they put in their vending machines to how they tend their gardens, Japan takes what it sees in the rest of the world, sets it aside, and does it differently (usually better). It’s got that tantalising clash of time-honoured traditions and bizarre new fads — a certain determined backwardness pulling against an extreme, future-facing forwardness. Its offices still use fax machines while its labs develop cutting-edge robots. It’s a place where the same level of care goes into cleaning a railway carriage as tying a kimono, and where the tiniest interaction can be an unexpected source of joy.

Japan may have stolen our hearts more than 20 years ago, but it still manages to surprise us every single day. And that’s still only part of what makes it special. Planning trips to Japan is such an art form that we have a whole team of specialists dedicated to Japan holidays at InsideJapan Tours, who share our office, values and jokes. Inside Japan Small Group Tours Incentive

Book three clients on a small group tour for the chance to claim a free tour for you.

We’ve just released dates for our 2025 Small Group Tours, along with our new online brochure (available here).

To celebrate, we’re launching our biggest agent incentive to date: the first ten agents to book three spaces on any of our Small Group Tours will earn a complimentary place on one, too. We know Japan’s a bestselling destination – and we’d love for you to experience it first hand.

How does it work?

If you are one of the first ten agents to book three client places onto any Small Group Tour between 1 January 2024 and 31 July 2024, we’ll give you a free spot on one, too. We’ll give you a list of available trips and dates from our essential range to choose from. It doesn’t stop there, though – sell four spots and you can pick a Classic tour, and six spots will earn you a Superior trip.

1. Are flights included? No, sorry. We’ll fund your place on the Small Group Tour, but you’ll have to cover the cost of getting there.

2. Can I transfer the free trip to someone else? We can only offer this incentive to the person who made the bookings.

3. Can I pick any date from any of your trips? When you’ve sold your three spots and are ready to claim the incentive, we’ll give you a list of available dates and trips to pick from.

4. I’ve already won a FOC from you – can I combine the incentives? This incentive is only valid if you or your agency haven’t received a FOC from us between the 1 January 2022 to July 2024.

5. How long do I have until I can claim my Small Group Tour? You have 12 months from the moment you make your third booking to claim your free Small Group Tour.

6. Do you include travel insurance and other add-ons? This incentive only covers what is already included on the Small Group Tour. You’ll need to cover anything extra.

7. Which trips can I claim?

  •  Book 3 small group tour passengers and could claim an Essential small group tour from a curated list
  •  Book 4 small group tour  passengers and could claim an Classic small group tour from a curated list
  •  Book 6 small group tour passengers and could claim an Superior  small group tour from a curated list

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 631 REVIEWS

Ms. Miharu was great and also our bus driver (bus #81) for driving us to our destinations safe everyday. Miharu is very knowledgeable and comical, we really enjoyed her company and knowledge.

I cannot rave enough about this tour. Miharu and Joyce (subbed for 2 days) were our top notch hard working guides. I appreciate the history and interesting side stories were communicated on the bus, so at most locations we were able to explore on our own. The hotels, meals and coach were very comfortable & enjoyable. Everything was ready and prepared when the group arrived. The itinerary is well paced and full so you get your money's worth. The sushi making, Ninja throwing and Maiko tea ceremony & performance were so much fun and a compliment to just sight seeing. This was a very memorable trip with a great group of fellow travelers. All in all, a very well organized tour and I would not hesitate to book another with AJT.

One of our many highlights from this trip was our amazing tour guide, Ito. He went above and beyond immersing us into his amazing culture and making our experience unforgettable. We learned a lot from him and really appreciated his willingness to educate. He was flexible but also very organized, he made the experience hassle free. Overall, the tour was a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for this meaningful journey.

We had a great tour guide (Miharu). Very sweet and knowledgeable she gave us alot of history but also insight into Japanese culture. It was an amazing experience with so many different places and activities.

The best decision we made was to book a tour through AJT. Our guide, Miharu, did an excellent job and provided information and history before we arrived at each stop on our tour. She kept the itinerary focused and gave us just enough time at each location to get a taste of it. We cannot wait to return to Japan and visit some new places.

Trip Planning FAQs

The best travel style for you will depend on your personal travel preferences and budget. Group tours are popular because they are more cost-effective than private tours , more hassle-free, and offer the chance for friendship within tour groups. Most of our group tours use a private coach for sightseeing, your driver will take you to the closest parking and you just need to walk to each destination from there. A private coach is a more flexible and a more hassle free way to visit Japan, this allows you to see as much of Japan as stress-free as possible. Private tours are often more costly, but offer full control of the travel pace and the sights you want to see, at the budget you set. If you would like to travel at your own pace, then custom private tours are for you. For a small group of 2 or 3 people, public transportation is the most cost efficient way to travel Japan. However, there is a lot of walking if you travel by public transportation since some attractions are far from the station, you will need extra days to visit the same sites compared to our group tours , and also you will need to able to walk 3-5 miles per day. We can also offer private tours by using private van. If you are looking for a private tour for 2 people with the same quality as our group tours , it will cost almost double the price. The larger the group size, the lower the cost per person.

Japan is a country with more places to see than might be expected of its size. For first-time travelers to Japan, the cities of Tokyo , Hakone , Mount Fuji , Takayama , Kanazawa , Nara , Kyoto , and Hiroshima are most recommended. Tokyo's glittering lights, tall skyscrapers, fine dining, and cultural experiences make it the number one place to visit. Kyoto is a must-see for its ancient temples, shrines, and gardens. It is also one of the best places for a spring cherry blossom tour . First time travelers enjoy Hakone and Mount Fuji's natural beauty, and a tour to see the autumn leaves in fall is especially lovely. Nara is near Kyoto and a top city for temples and beautiful nature. If you have enough time, go to Takayama and Shirakawago for ancient Japan historical sites and an authentic cultural experience, and go to Hiroshima for a walk in the Peace Park, past the A-Bomb Dome. More time means you can visit all the best Japanese cities!

A second trip is the perfect chance to explore a more real, authentic Japan atmosphere. The most recommended destinations for a second-time traveler to Japan are Tohoku , Hokkaido , Kyushu , and Okinawa . Take a trip out of central Honshu to visit the Tohoku region, where you can see the Aomori Nebuta Festival and the Sendai Tanabata fireworks in an exciting summer tour . Venture off the main island to the beautiful nature landscapes up in Hokkaido . Go down into Shikoku to discover the amazing treasures of Naoshima Art Island and the local Awa Odori dance festival of Tokushima . Go further south into Kyushu for the shrine at Takachiho or the Hidden Christian Sites at Nagasaki . Second-time travelers will enjoy a summer vacation in Japan to Okinawa's beautiful, perfect beaches. Japan has endless destinations to appeal to the second time traveler!

The prices will range widely depending on the destinations, duration, and your demands for comfort. Let's take one of the most popular itineraries as an example - a 7-day tour to Tokyo , Hakone , Mt Fuji , Kyoto , Nara and Osaka . For 2 people staying in 4-star accommodations, it will cost about US$3500 per person as a private Japan land tour , using public transportation (bullet train, local train, subway and taxi). If you join in a group tour with a similar itinerary, the trip usually costs about US$2700 per person. No matter how much you want to spend on a trip, as the best Japan tour company, we are always happy to tailor make a private tour itinerary that best fits your needs. In addition, our early bird discount can also help you save more.

The length of the trip will depend on the destinations and how much of Japan you want to see. For a single city vacation package ( Tokyo or Kyoto ), two to three days are required. If you want to visit three to four cities ( Tokyo , Mt Fuji , Kyoto & Nara ), you will need around one week. A 10-day Japan vacation package usually would cover five to six cities ( Tokyo , Mt Fuji , Kyoto , Nara , Osaka & Hiroshima ). For a two-week trip to Japan, you can add Takayama , Shirakawa-go , and Kanazawa to the popular sights in central Japan.

Yes, we do. Our Ultra-Deluxe Luxury Tours include luxury accommodation, private transportation, high-class dining, and exclusive cultural experiences. Any time of the year is the best time to visit Japan! In March and April, you can see beautiful cherry blossoms, in May there are seasonal flowers, such as Wisteria, Baby blue eyes, and shibazakura (phlox moss). The summer months from June to August is the best time for festivals like Awa Odori, and there are amazing fireworks festivals, too. In Hokkaido, fields of lavenders are in bloom at this time, as well as many other summer flowers. Autumn is the best time to see the bright autumn leaves, as the fall foliage changes to vibrant colors, and winter is good for the Sapporo Snow Festival, skiing in the mountains, and seeing snow monkeys! We have group tours available in every season, and can plan a private tour around your schedule.

You can see the cherry blossoms at different times in spring, depending on where you travel - earlier in the south, and later as you move north. Southern to Central Japan sees cherry blossoms from late March to mid April. This is the perfect time to see the pretty pink flowers anywhere from Nagasaki and Fukuoka to Kyoto's Maruyama Park, all the way over to popular Ueno Park in Tokyo. The Tohoku region's cherry blossoms bloom around late April, if you travel up to Sendai or Morioka. Up in Hokkaido, late April to early May is the perfect time for a stroll in a park in Hakodate or Sapporo to see the famous cherry blossoms.

We'll be back tomorrow with more updates on the war.

We reported earlier that the US will soon announce more than $2.3bn in new security assistance for Ukraine (see post at 4.16pm).

Defence secretary Lloyd Austin made the announcement during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart at the Pentagon.

Now, we can bring you more information on this.

During the meeting, Mr Austin said the latest weapons package for Ukraine would include arms such as anti-tank weapons and air defence interceptors, and would allow accelerated procurement of NASAMS and Patriot air defence interceptors.

Ukrainian defence minister Rustem Umerov said: "I am proud that the US will soon announce more than $2.3bn in new security assistance for Ukraine.

"This package, under presidential drawdown authority, will provide more air defence interceptors, anti-tank weapons and other critical munitions from the US inventories."

During the meeting with Mr Austin, the Ukrainian official also said Ukraine was looking forward to becoming a member of NATO.

UN human rights experts say Russia violated international law by imprisoning Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and should release him "immediately".

The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, made up of independent experts convened by the UN's top human rights body, said there was a "striking lack of any factual or legal substantiation" for spying charges levelled against Mr Gershkovich.

The five-member group said Mr Gershkovich's US nationality has been a factor in his detention, and as a result the case against him was "discriminatory".

"The Working Group finds that Mr Gershkovich's deprivation of liberty constitutes a violation of international law on the grounds of discrimination based on his nationality," the group said in a decision that was taken in March but made public only today.

Matthew Gillett, the working group's chairman, said its opinion was grounded in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which was adopted in 1966 and nearly all UN member countries have ratified.

Mr Gillett said Russia should provide Mr Gershkovich with "proper reparations" for holding him for over a year in detention without a legitimate basis.

Sanctions imposed against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine have failed to achieve any of their aims, the country's ambassador has told Sky News.

Andrei Kelin was speaking to Sky News as an investigation by Sky's Ed Conway revealed glaring loopholes in the restrictions regime, which has allowed British companies - legally - to help keep Russian gas flowing and generate huge revenues for the Kremlin's war machine.

He defended the continued trade with Europe despite the heightened tensions, arguing "business is pure business".

He also argued the supply of weapons by the West, including Britain, to Ukraine was "bad", as it perpetuated the conflict, which he claimed would be worse for Kyiv in the long term.

Speaking to  The World With Yalda Hakim  programme, Mr Kelin said: "The goal of the sanctions was first of all to spoil [the] normal life of Russians so they will say that [Vladimir] Putin is wrong.

"The second point of sanctions was to damage the Russian economy as much as possible.

"The third point was to change the political personnel.

"So none of these goals have been reached by the sanctions."

US secretary of state Antony Blinken and the Ukrainian president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak have discussed NATO members' intention to bring Ukraine closer to the alliance.

Mr Blinken has said Ukraine will become a member of NATO and that the summit will "help build a bridge" to that outcome, state department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said.

"They spoke about a number of issues, including the upcoming Washington NATO summit and allies' intention to bring Ukraine closer to NATO membership and helping to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian aggression," Mr Patel told reporters.

Their meeting in Washington comes before a NATO summit in the US capital next week, at which Ukraine hopes to secure more assurances from the alliance on its membership bid.

Apartment buildings have been left destroyed in the rural settlement of Toshkivka, in the eastern Luhansk region, amid fierce fighting in the region.

Luhansk - along with the Donetsk area - forms part of the Donbas region.

The region is one which Russia is trying to seize.

Lithuania's foreign ministry has made a diplomatic protest to Russia after a Russian civilian aircraft entered its airspace without permission.

The Pobeda airline aircraft entered Lithuanian airspace over the Baltic sea for a minute on Sunday evening, on its way from Moscow Vnukovo airport to Kaliningrad airport, the ministry said.

Lithuania, neighbour to both Russia and its ally Belarus, was once ruled from Moscow but is now a member of NATO and the EU.

The country has shown its backing for Ukraine during the war and provided military support to the country.

Belarus will not allow any clashes on the border with Ukraine, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said according to the country's state-run Belta news agency.

"I guarantee you that we will not allow any clashes on the border with Ukraine. There won't be any," Mr Lukashenko said.

Last week, Belarus announced that it had deployed additional air defence forces to its border with Ukraine to protect "critical infrastructure facilities" due to increased Ukrainian drone activity in the area.

President Lukashenko, who has been the head of state of Belarus since 1994, is a longstanding ally of Mr Putin.

At the onset of Russia's invasion, Belarus provided logistical support for Russia, with Russian forces entering Ukraine from Belarusian territory.

But Mr Lukashenko has not sent any troops.

Two women have been killed after Russian attacks on the central Ukrainian city of Nikopol.

Regional governor Serhiy Lysak said on Telegram  the women were aged 61 and 86.

Another nine people were wounded.

"There is a lot of destruction in the district centre," he said.

"Local housing, educational institutions and a dispensary were damaged. Shops, beauty salons and cars were also affected."

Nikopol has been subjected to aerial attacks since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Russia denies targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin has said Washington will soon announce an additional £1.8bn in security assistance for Ukraine.

The package will include anti-tank weapons, interceptors and munitions for Patriot and other air defence systems.

It marks a strong response to pleas from Kyiv for help in battling Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region.

On Sunday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia had dropped more than 800 powerful glide bombs in Ukraine in the last week alone.

He urged national leaders to relax restrictions on the use of Western weapons to strike military targets inside Russia, adding that Ukraine needed the "necessary means to destroy the carriers of these bombs, including Russian combat aircraft, wherever they are".
