We made a 10 day Mediterranean cruise with my ship 3 in Sept. 2016. Only in La Spezia it rained continuously and briefly in Rome. Otherwise only sun up to 30 degrees.

The first night there was a massive storm and blue bags everywhere, but afterwards only sun, great weather. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises, just beautiful.

We were in Greece, Italy (Naples and Sicily) and Marseille. Anywhere from 20 to 25 degrees. Just once rain in Greece.

On our first cruise “a dream cruise on the AIDAperla” from Barcelona via Palma, Corsica, Rome, Livorno and back with the beautiful AIDAperla. During the trip from Corsica to Rome, the weather was quite rough. The crew had everything under control and we always felt very well taken care of.

The weather was simply super in the eastern Mediterranean, as well as the destinations would be more than worth seeing.

Unfortunately we had a lot of rain, and on the only day at sea there was a storm but heavy, wind force 10 which was very unusual in this region.

Cruise from 14 – 21 May 2017 Venice-Bari-Corfu-Athens-Dubrovnik-Venice. Unfortunately it rained slightly in Corfu and in Athens it poured all day so that we didn’t even go ashore. Nice weather for the rest of the days!

Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed

Eastern Mediterranean from/to Venice: wonderful weather, always sun, hardly any wind, hardly any waves. Except Corfu, a thunderstorm cell caught us, 4 hours of continuous rain, then sun again.

It was sunshine every day, 25 degrees Celsius every day, no rain, hardly any clouds, magical sunrises and sunsets. It couldn’t be better

Partially rainy, cool and very windy, with a really autumnal touch.

Weather Rating: 2 stars – Tricky

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean

Melinda Crow

You might think the best time to cruise the Mediterranean would be summer because that's when the most ships are cruising in Europe. But I'd argue that other times of year are better.

You'll find ships cruising in the Med year-round, so there's never a time when you can't cruise at all. You'll find the most ships and itinerary choices in summer during peak season and the fewest during winter's off season. Spring and fall are considered the shoulder season, when the Mediterranean cruise season is gearing up or winding down.

Taking into account price, weather and crowds, plus choices of ships and ports, I believe the best time to cruise the Mediterranean is during the shoulder season. Specifically, I prefer April. As your decision might be based on entirely different factors, let's dive into the variables to determine the best time for you to head to the region and hop on a cruise ship.

Introduction to Mediterranean geography

med cruise october weather

The Mediterranean Sea consists of 11 smaller seas. Shopping for Mediterranean cruises can be confusing because some cruise lines like to label their itineraries according to the smaller sea names.

You might find cruises to the Adriatic, between Italy's east coast and the central European countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania; these will take you to ports such as Venice, Italy, and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Aegean cruises traverse the large open sea between Greece and Turkey and go as far south as Crete, with stops in Athens and Santorini in Greece and Istanbul in Turkey. Sailings through the Ionian Sea, located between the sole of Italy's boot and western Greece, bring you to the Italian island of Sicily and the Greek island of Corfu.

All of these cruise destinations are considered Mediterranean, along with Monaco, the southern coasts of France and Spain, and even Israel. Ports in Portugal are also included in Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Even though it doesn't have any coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, Portugal is considered part of the Mediterranean region.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean based on choices of ships and itineraries

med cruise october weather

Cruise lines that sail the region all year include Viking , MSC Cruises , Costa , Celestyal and Norwegian Cruise Line . But while you might be able to cruise the Mediterranean in winter, your choice of ports is somewhat limited. We found no sailings to the popular ports of Corfu, Dubrovnik or Koper, Slovenia in December or January.

Most of the winter offerings cruise the western ports of Italy, plus France, and westward to Barcelona. There are a handful of longer sailings that sail from Athens or include Istanbul, western Turkey, Israel and even Alexandria, Egypt. Among popular cruise lines, only Viking includes stops in Santorini in winter, and only Costa offers cruises that include Venice in the winter. Norwegian's winter Mediterranean itineraries are focused on Spain and Portugal.

Spring and early summer bring more ships and more port choices. Beginning in March, we found dozens of ships scheduled to visit Venice, Corfu and Santorini. Holland America , Princess , Seabourn , Oceania and Regent Seven Seas Cruises all have ships ready to sail the Med in March. In April, the list of mainstream, premium and luxury lines cruising Mediterranean waters grows larger, and includes Windstar , Royal Caribbean , Silversea and Celebrity Cruises .

By June, the choice of cruise lines and itineraries is at its peak. Among the mainstream lines, only Carnival Cruise Line is still absent in June, opting instead to sail a short season of 10-and 11-night cruises in September and October.

Most ships stay in Europe through summer before beginning a global dispersion between October and November. Disney Cruise Line is the first to leave, with its last summer Mediterranean sailing usually falling in July. Celebrity is among the last to leave, often continuing its Mediterranean cruises well into December and even January, incorporating the holiday season.

If your dream is to see Venice or Santorini, or to cruise with one of the mainstream lines, you can rule out winter but should find ample choices between March and October. By the end of November, the number of ships calling at Mediterranean ports has dropped to winter levels.

The best time for a Mediterranean sailing based on prices and crowds

If your ideal Mediterranean cruise doesn't include crowds, winter is a good choice, other than December holiday weeks. But most travelers will prefer a little more warmth and a larger choice of ports while still prioritizing a good price and lighter crowds.

Across the board, from mainstream to luxury, Mediterranean cruise fares peak in June, July and August. Prices for big-ship cruises varied by as much as $60 per person per night between spring sailings and summer. On luxury lines like Silversea, spring cruise fares were hundreds of dollars cheaper per person per night compared to summer fares. March sees an upward tick in rates due to spring break travel. The best deals we found outside of winter fell in April and November.

To decide what crowds would look like in various months, we looked at two popular ports where the effect of multiple ships is felt the most -- Santorini and Venice. Visit Santorini in June or July and you will find yourself fighting for breathing room among as many as 15,000 other cruise ship passengers.

Compare that with an April or November stop there, where the daily cruise passenger load tops out around 3,000. We found days in April where only one or two mid-sized ships were scheduled to be in port.

med cruise october weather

I've been to Santorini when four mid-sized ships (approximately 5,000 passengers) were in port and found it challenging to walk through the narrow maze of shops, restaurants and hotels. It was crowded enough that I was concerned about returning to the ship on time because the lines at the cable car that takes cruise passengers down the cliffs to the tender dock were so long. With 15,000 people in port, I don't know how you'd be able to walk through town at all. Santorini is a good-sized island, but most of the things cruisers want to see are perched on the narrow rim of the cliffs.

Venice has recently cut back on its cruise tourism capacity, in part by forcing some ships to dock in alternate ports and bring guests to the city by bus. We included passenger counts from Trieste, Ravenna and Venice and found June numbers as high as 6,000 passengers arriving, but as low as 4,000. Cruise passenger arrivals in April are typically below 3,000 per day. The numbers are lower than Santorini — but then, Venice has a far more complicated crowd control scenario.

If avoiding high prices and crowd congestion is your priority, rule out summer months and stick with either winter or the shoulder seasons of spring and fall.

The best time to cruise the Med based on weather

Temperatures remain moderate across most of the Mediterranean year-round, but even Istanbul can be chilly, with an average high temperature of 48 degrees in January. Athens, Rome, Barcelona and most of the Greek islands see temperatures in the mid- to upper-50s in December and January, warming slightly in February.

Summer temperatures can be brutal in the larger cities. Athens reaches 90 degrees and higher on a regular basis in July and August. Rome and Barcelona average roughly 2 degrees cooler than that in the summer.

Rain is more common across the Mediterranean in October and November than most other months, but the average monthly rainfall, even in the fall, is three inches or less. The northern ports in the Adriatic see a bit more rain than most of the Med. Don't forget the famed Acqua Alta, or mega-tides in Venice, which will leave you sloshing through St. Mark's Square in rubber boots. Though a genuinely rare occurrence, the high tides are most likely to happen in November and December, making them a concern when booking a cruise on one of the handful of ships with November stops in Venice.

If chilly, hot or wet weather are deciding factors for your Mediterranean cruise, rule out January, February and December for the chill, July and August for the heat, and October, November and December for rain and tides. That leaves March, April, May, June and September as the best weather months for cruising in the Mediterranean.

Bottom line

Everyone has their own reasoning for the timing of a cruise. Yours might include traveling while school is out or maximizing time at the beach. Perhaps you are loyal to one particular cruise line or have your heart set on cruising on a newly launched ship.

Whatever your reasons, there is not a bad time to cruise the Mediterranean. My favorite is April for the confluence of reasonable fares, pleasant weather, manageable crowds and an abundance of itinerary and ship choices, but I have loved sailings in other months as well.

My advice is simple: Even if I think shoulder-season months are the best time to cruise the Mediterranean, go when it works best for you and your travel partners. Because a dream cruise in Europe, even with less-than-ideal weather or annoying crowds, is better than no cruise at all.

Learn more about  Mediterranean cruises

Summer, fall and spring are the best times for Mediterranean cruises.  Rome ’s Colosseum is gorgeous in the fall.  Dubrovnik  comes alive in summer. A  Greece  cruise in spring brings warm Ionian breezes and bougainvillea bursting from windowsills. You can’t go wrong with a Mediterranean cruise any time of the cruise season, but certain months are better than others depending on what you want to experience. During winter there are few options for cruises and many places close for the season.

When is cruise season in the Mediterranean?

Mediterranean cruise season begins in spring (May) and lasts until late fall (November). There are pros and cons of each time of year to visit the Mediterranean. Often, if you visit in high season, you will have better weather and more open attractions, but thicker crowds. Shoulder season is the time right before or after high season. In terms of Mediterranean cruises, shoulder season would be spring or fall.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit the Mediterranean?

Mediterranean cruises in Spring Spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. The seas are calmer by May and the temperatures start to climb into the mid-70s, which is a great temp for open-air plazas and beaches. The crowds will be thinner, as most kids aren’t out of school yet.

Pros: You’ll have more room at major attractions, as kids are still in school and families start vacationing in June. Cons: Depending on where you cruise, water temps may be brisk for a swim in the sapphire seas.

Mediterranean Cruises in Summer School is out, which makes summer the best time to cruise the Mediterranean for families with tight schedules. It is also the best time for those who like it hot. Really hot. Temperatures in Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia will be in the 90s, but the tranquil ocean waters invite a cool off. August is a popular vacation time for locals in Rome and there may be some closed shops and attractions. Summer is also peak season, so expect hordes of tourists everywhere.

Pros: A great time to hit the beaches. Sunny and dry weather. Cons: Peak season means more tourists. In August in Italy, some shops may be closed for vacations.

September and October are part of the shoulder season, when kids go back to school and vacation prices dip. The sun won’t be quite as fierce, which makes walking the hills of  Santorini  or the winding streets of Rome a much more enjoyable experience. The crowds will have thinned out and you’ll have more space to enjoy popular attractions such as Las Ramblas in  Barcelona . Fall harvest season means more wine festivals and  Food and Wine® Tours .

Pros: Less crowds, cheaper prices, more food festivals for harvest season. Cons: More rain showers. Some shops and restaurants close in fall, once peak season is over.

Is November a Good Time to Cruise the Mediterranean? October and November are at the very end of the Mediterranean cruise season. Don’t expect hot, sunny beach weather but cooler temps in the 40s to low 70s Fahrenheit. Anticipate more rainy days and waves. Winter in the Mediterranean is mild, but some shops may close in preparation for the upcoming season. October and November are known for some of the best discounts and deals. What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise

Last updated: November 7th, 2023

  • Find a Cruise

The Mediterranean is world renowned for its many breathtaking coasts, gorgeous cities, ancient history, and delicious cuisine. Who can resist its charms?

Taking a cruise around the Mediterranean is one of the best ways to discover this fantastic region full of culture, art, and romance. Our cruises visit popular ports like Barcelona, Spain, little-known towns such Santa Margherita in the Italian Riviera, and bucket-list locations like Santorini and Mykonos, Greece.

Since you’ll be packing for a multi-country cruise , it’s important to pack wisely for your journey.  Here are some tips on what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise.

Casual clothes

Couple eating ice cream while touring Italy

During a Mediterranean cruise, you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Make sure to bring a number of casual and comfortable clothes to wear during your days in port.

T-shirts, shorts, jeans, day dresses, and skirts are perfect options for days in port when you want to feel at ease. Focus on breathable fabrics, like linen and cotton, especially if you’re cruising in the summer months.

what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise - casual clothes

If you’re traveling during the shoulder season (April and October), bring a few long-sleeved t-shirts and light sweaters that you can layer on top of your clothes in case the weather gets chilly.

Couple flaunting their swimwear at the beach

What to pack for a Mediterranean cruise will always include swimwear. Pack at least three swimsuits for lounging on the beach in port and by the pool on board the ship. This way, you’ll always have a dry swimsuit at hand.

Swim cover-ups

what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise - swim coverups

If you’ll be spending a lot of time in your swimsuit, a coverup is a must. You’ll need one when walking between your stateroom and the pool. They’re also great for beach days in port when you want to take a break from sunbathing and swimming to enjoy a seaside lunch or drink at a nearby cafe.

Couple standing by the railing with Capri shore as backdrop

Protect your face from the sun by packing a hat that will keep the rays at bay. For men, a good baseball cap or SPF-protective hat will work, while ladies, if you want to feel like a glamorous, old-school movie star, pack a wide-brimmed straw hat, which gives you extra protection and pairs well with almost every outfit.

Couple drinking wine al fresco

Shield your eyes from the sun and avoid squinting in all of your pictures by packing at least one pair of sunglasses for your Mediterranean cruise. If you want to look extra stylish, bring an additional pair and change up your look every couple of days.

Comfortable walking shoes

Couple wandering around the historic site of Pompeii

You’d be surprised at how much walking you end up doing on a Mediterranean cruise, as you stroll around charming towns and historic cities. However, many streets in Europe are made up of uneven cobblestones, so walking around in flip-flops or heels can be painful.

Pack at least one pair of comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers or supported flats, that will keep your feet happy and healthy throughout your vacation.

For days spent by the pool or at the beach, pack a pair of sandals, flip flops, or water shoes that won’t be ruined if they get a little sand or water on them.

Sweater or light jacket

Couple sightseeing on a cruise veranda

If you’re sailing in the summer, the Mediterranean Sea is usually calm with warm breezes at night. During the spring and fall seasons, the wind cools down and the evenings are chillier.

Bring a light cardigan or stylish jacket to wear when you’re spending time at any of the ship’s outdoor areas, such as your private veranda, the Lawn Club, or the Rooftop Garden on Celebrity Edge and Apex.

Scarf or pashmina

Couple walking the streets of Barcelona

A scarf or pashmina is also a must when cruising around the Mediterranean. Not only is it an easy solution for when the weather is colder, it’s also important if you plan on visiting European churches, since many of them require female visitors to cover up their shoulders in order to go inside.

If you happen to be wearing a tank top or spaghetti-strap dress, a light scarf draped over your shoulders will work, so make sure to bring one along in your day pack during port days.

Dinner and evening clothes

Couple in semi formal wear walking the streets of Venice

For evenings on board or on a cruise with overnight stays in port, pack a few dressier outfits. For women, a maxi dress or a fashionable top paired with pants and a skirt are great options. For men, smart pants with a short-sleeve sport shirt or button-down shirt work well.

While our dress code for dinner in the main dining room and specialty restaurants is flexible, we do have a couple of restrictions that you should keep in mind when thinking about what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise.

T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, and pool wear are not allowed in the Main Restaurant or specialty restaurants at any time. In addition, shorts and flip-flops are not allowed during the evening hours onboard.

Guests hanging out at night ondeck Celebrity

For “Evening Chic” nights, you’re encouraged to dress up. If you plan on attending one of our Evening Chic dinners, the dress code for women allows for cocktail dresses, skirts, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top, while men can wear pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down, or sweater.

Evening shoes

Now that you have taken care of your dinner attire, don’t forget about your shoes! Women should pack heels or dressier sandals, while men should make sure to include at least one pair of smart shoes in their suitcase.

Backpack or handbag

Woman wearing a hat and backpack sighseeing the scenic Venice Canal

Aside from all of your clothes, it’s important to pack one backpack or handbag for your Mediterranean cruise. A backpack is essential for days in port, when you’ll be off exploring European towns and cities and will need to carry things like your wallet, passport, phone, clothing items (sweater or pashmina), and camera.

People in formal wear eating dinner

The easiest way to dress up an outfit is by adding an accessory. Don’t forget to pack a few pieces of jewelry, like your favorite pair of earrings or a statement necklace, for days and nights when you want to take your look up a notch. Rest easy knowing that all of our staterooms and suites have a safe, where you’ll be able to store your valuables.

Lightweight jacket

Family on a boat touring a cave in Spain

If you’re traveling during the shoulder season, pack a lightweight jacket. Pick one that can be easily stored in your backpack or bag during shore excursions—preferably in a fabric that won’t wrinkle—so you can put it on in case the weather turns.

The onboard pharmacy doesn’t fill prescriptions, so make sure to bring enough of your medications for the length of your cruise. It’s also smart to pack first aid essentials such as bandaids, pain relief medications, anti-nausea medicine, and upset stomach relief.

Phone and phone charger

Couple taking a selfie in the streets of Rhodes

Buying an extra phone charger and packing it in your suitcase before your cruise is a smart way to make sure you can snap all of those incredible vacation pictures and upload them to your social media accounts.

Other travel essentials

Aside from all the recommendations above, don’t forget to pack other essentials such as underwear, socks, pajamas, cosmetics, wallet, passport, and cash.

Woman carrying a camera with Partenon temple as backdrop

Last but not least, pack a good camera. Sure, your phone can do the trick, but you might want to get even better pictures of the beauty of the Mediterranean coast and all of its picturesque sights.

How can I dress like a local while traveling around the Mediterranean?

If you don’t want to stand out as a tourist during your cruise around Europe , here are a few suggestions on what to wear during a Mediterranean cruise.

Couple in semi formal wear walking casually in Amalfi Coast

During the day, there’s plenty of room to have fun with your clothes. When considering Mediterranean style, focus on items that will look cool but comfortable in your surroundings. Think linen pants and shirts, cotton sundresses, espadrilles, straw hats, and leather sandals.

At night, many Europeans like to dress up, so if you’re planning on having dinner in port, remember to leave the sneakers and tank tops in the closet and choose a more smart look. For ladies, a cocktail dress or gauzy dress are solid options, while men should consider pairing slacks with a nice button-down shirt.

What should I pack for a 7-night Mediterranean cruise?

Couple wearing comfortable clothes while touring Mykonos

Most of our cruises around the Mediterranean last at least 7 nights, so plan on packing enough clothes to last you throughout your trip. At the same time, try not to overpack and bring items you can wear on multiple days.

Shoes are an easy accessory that can do double duty throughout your vacation. Pack a pair of comfortable sandals or walking shoes, beach sandals, and a dressier pair of shoes and you should be fine for a weeklong journey.

Couple touring the lemon farms in Sorrento

Pants, shorts, and skirts are also quite versatile and can be worn more than once, so make sure to pack these items in neutral colors that can be paired with different kinds of tops throughout your trip.

Accessories go a long way. Adding a pair of earrings or a statement necklace can make a casual day look perfect for evenings.

What should I pack for a Mediterranean cruise in the summer?

Couple drinking cocktails at a beach

This packing list is a great guideline for what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise during the summer. If you’re traveling during the high summer season, keep in mind that the weather can get quite hot, so make sure to bring a number of warm weather essentials such as sunscreen, lightweight clothes, a sun hat, and plenty of swimsuits.

To all seasoned cruisers: my hubby and I have booked an October 6-19 HAL cruise beginning in Venice. I assumed October weather would be similar to mid-west October weather but after reading up on the Mediterranean weather patterns, find that October can be rainy. If any of you have cruised (Venice, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Naples, Rome, Marseilles, Barcelona, etc...) during the month of October, I'd appreciate any info. you could share. Many thanks!!

I think that your timing is perfect. We have been in the Med during Sept/Oct for the past three years. Weather is usually very good in early-mid October. It is, along with springtime, our favourite time to go.

We were in Malta and Sicily from mid Sept to the end of October this year. We were on the beach and swimming for a few days around Oct. 20.

We boarded a cruise in Rome on Oct. 29 and had good weather for eight days through to Barcelona on Nov. 6. We had one morning of rain...BUT we just missed some very heavy showers by a matter of hours.

Thank you, iancal! I feel very relieved after reading your post! I was invisioning a soggy cruise! We have cruised before but it's been many years ago so thought we'd try a different cruise line altogether (having cruised on Princess three times and Norwegian once) and a little later in the year. Also, I traveled to many European countries with my high school students (so much fun!) and more recently I arranged a winter break vacation trip to Sicily ( Taromina was our base city) for just my husband and myself followed by another trip the following winter to Florence, Assisi, and then Rome. I'm an addicted European traveler and am SO looking forward to our cruise next October!! Thanks again for your comments!!

I just got off the Noordam a month ago after being on for 37 nights doing a b2b in the Med, leaving 27 September and then continuing on for the TA. Until we reached the Azores, we hadn't experienced rain, except for a quick thunderstorm late one afternoon as we were returning to the ship in Livorno. I wore short sleeve tops and either shorts and capris every day.

Just to confirm what you have already been told.....

We did a Med cruise Oct 2009 and the weather was glorious! I would estimate the daytime temps were betwen 23-27c, and I think it was hotter than that when we trecked up to the Accropolis in Athens.

We took an umberella with us each day - used it for shade.

I think you have picked the perfect time of year for your cruise, you will love it.

Keith1010

Please please please remember that weather is weather and as we all know weather patterns continually change.

Let me begin by saying that I love sailing the Med in April into May and in September into October. It is less crowded than in the summer and you don't have the hot and humid weather to deal with.

Precisely what your weather will be like is anyone's guess and even though one person said the weather was dry or another one wet is just that. It varies. You might have rain in some of these places like Venice and Rome. You might not. It doesn't rain everyday but you could be there when there is some rain or you might luck out an be there when there is none. If there is you just use an umbrella or rain coat. Same for the weather. It could be very warm or just warm or even a little cool early in the morning in some of the places. I've been there in October in Venice for a back to back cruise and had three days there. First day I thought I was in Alaska. It was rainy and cold. Second day was cloudy but warmer. Third day was hot and sunny. You just don't know.

Would I go in October? Absolutely. Can any of us guarantee the rain? Would I go? Yes.

I agree with Keith. I've been on seven Med cruises, six of them in October or November. While the weather can be absolutely beautiful and warm to hot in the Southern Med, it can also be chilly and showery. Just be prepared with various layers (including a rain jacket and perhaps a light fleece to layer under it if needed) and you will be fine.

As an example, the Med cruise I was just on started in mid-October through the end of the month. The first week was absolutely delightful: warm but not hot, no rain, smooth seas. The second week was cooler, showery with occasional downpours, and the seas were noticeably rougher (had to cancel two tender ports).

Overall, though, it is a great time of year to be in the Mediterranean. I'd rather deal with the occasional rain than with the heat and crowds of summer.

If you want to be absolutely certain (or as certain as you can be) then move the date up to the last week of September/first week of October).

We had rain on the day we went to Giverny. The rain stopped just in time for us to photograph Monet's gardens - which made the photos AMAZING! Honestly, if it rains, the overcast sky offers some of the best possible conditions for taking photos. The colors will be so vibrant! We had a cool day in Brugge on the same cruise - just wore a lightweight jacket. As others have stated, bring umbrellas and light layers including something waterproof.

And you still won't be certain. I've been there last week of September when it has rained and also when it hasn't. You never know.

Agreed. We were in Vienna/Budapest in mid Sept this year prior to flying south to Malta and warm weather. Rain and overcast. And it apparently rained all summer from what we were led to believe. Not at all what we anticipated.

Felt sorry for the folks on river cruises -lots of rain and elevated water levels in some rivers translated into itinerary changes for a few cruises.

We were in Rome from this Oct. 29 to Nov. 4 before our trans-Atlantic - weather was sunny about 70 F every day, and remained good until reaching Portimao, Portugal on Nov. 8. The first rain we had was in Lisbon Nov. 9.

This was our third Med to US T/A in recent years - all late October to early Novenber , and we've twice driven around Italy in October- we have always enjoyed largely good weather - better than September, when it can still be hot and humid.

I can recall a couple of Navy deployments to the Med in the 60's - when October was best month - of course, rain can happen any time, but October is probably the best month.

You will have passed the autumn equinox around Sept 21st, and the daylight hours are shorter, so the temperatures are dropping, but usually it's still warm. Obviously, the further south you sail the warmer it will be, but the weather is beginning to get a little unsettled. There can be some storms, and often some rain.

We usually had a week's holiday in the Med over school half term, around the 3rd week in October, and the sea is cooling down, so for swimming it was always best to go to the southern isles or Tunisia.

Just got back from our middle to end of Oct trip. We had fine weather in Italy both before and after the cruise - didn't even need jackets.

However the cruise through the Greek Isles in the middle was blustery, windy, and sometimes cool and rainy. Couldn't tender to Mykonos. Rained like a son of a gun in Kusadasi during the evening, and then was sunny and fair the next morning for Ephesus.

This is the way I would sum it up. Weather was changeable. The start of the day was not like the weather in the middle of the day, or at the end of the day. Be prepared for anything. Expect a little of everything.

The good thing about this time of year in the Med is that there is a lot of walking and climbing, even if you didn't expect it - Better to do that when you're not sweating and gasping. Also, far fewer people all over the place, so line-ups are shorter, the crush is less, and you might actually be able to get closer to some stuff. Wearing your rain/wind jacket.

Thanks to you all who took time to address my concerns about cruising in October! I'm sure we will experience a variety of weather conditions which will make for an interesting trip! Regardless of the weather I'm confident we will enjoy our cruise immensely! We are looking forward to our adventure!! 😊 . Next....hooking up with our "Roll Call" group!!

Please please please remember that weather is weather and as we all know weather patterns continually change.   Let me begin by saying that I love sailing the Med in April into May and in September into October. It is less crowded than in the summer and you don't have the hot and humid weather to deal

Good to know. Keeping these dates in mind in anticipation of a first Med cruise in October 2015 or May 2016.

Europe does not close down after October

People live there and everything is open

I have been to Italy and Spain in October a n d it was just lovely!

BTW I gave also been to Rome in January and it was n I ce enough to sit outside at cafes

When we cruised in the Med at the end of October the weather was mostly fine and sunny. I didn't need a jacket in Rome or Naples. It rained in the evening of our port call in Monaco but that was the worst weather we had. The biggest difference I noted about cruising then as opposed to June or July was that it got dark much earlier. That's not a big problem really as we were back on the ship before dusk.

technoman is right to point out that there can be no guarantees. We may have been lucky, although I do believe there's more chance of sun than storms.

med cruise october weather

We’re all booked for 9 Oct with itinerary that sounds the same. When I looked for past temps , high teens to mid 20’s on average, with Greek islands are little warmer. Am expecting a shower or two with chillier evenings than I’m used to in Caribbean but still hoping to top up tan.

If your planning your own excursions you may find some attractions may have reduced hours or days compared to high season, but that’s easily googled.

What to wear on a Mediterranean cruise

What We Packed – Mediterranean Cruise In October/November

I had been looking forward to this cruise for so long, and our varied itinerary saw us call at Rome, Livorno (both Italy), Cannes (France), Palma (Majorca), Barcelona (Spain) and Naples (Italy) before returning to Rome. With seven nights on board the NCL cruise ship Norwegian Epic , we also opted to stay one night in Rome before boarding so we would have time to see the sights of that ‘must visit' city too. Otherwise you tend not to see much of your embarkation port.

Although cruises have very generous baggage allowances, we did have to fly to Italy from the UK and also transfer ourselves to the port which is in Civitavecchia – about an hour from Rome city centre. As we chose to do this by train (it's cheap, just 5 Euros each) we didn't want to hinder ourselves with too much luggage.

NCL's Norwegian Epic

NCL's Norwegian Epic

Flying with Alitalia , I was disappointed to find they have quite a low carry-on allowance. The maximum bag dimensions are much smaller than other airlines – surprising as they are Italy's national carrier – and the weight limit is just 8kg. You can also carry a ‘personal item' such as a small bag or laptop; this is a bit vague on the Alitalia website, but basically something that will fit under the seat in front of you.

For speed and convenience we do prefer to travel with carry-on only, but in this case we didn't have suitable luggage to fit so we would have to check a bag. Fortunately this was included in the fare (or so we thought… read on!)

Between two of us we checked one smallish suitcase (a bit larger than a carry-on), took a soft carry-on bag which served as an ‘overnight bag' for our Rome stay, and I had my handbag/purse which held our tickets/passports/money etc. Have to say on our trip no-one checked either the dimensions or weight of our bags, but maybe they just looked ok.

I packed the items we would need for the first night/next day (change of top, underwear, PJs) in the carry-on so we wouldn't need to unpack the suitcase at all, with the exception of toiletries which were easier to check rather than strictly adhere to the liquid allowance. These were placed inside the case lid so they were easy to access. Unfortunately hubby couldn't find his socks in the morning so started rifling through my neatly packed case… sigh 😉

NCL Epic - Waves Pool Bar

Our trip departed in late October, returning in November. From the weather forecasts, we expected reasonably warm weather throughout of around 68 degrees (20 degrees C) and generally dry. The Mediterranean weather can, of course, be changeable though, and rain is always possible. It can also be much cooler out at sea than on land, but a few layers will suffice and we didn't take any ‘cold weather' gear. The coldest time would be leaving home for the airport at 3am.

To travel in I wore:

  • Denim skirt
  • Long-sleeved t-shirt
  • Zip-up, hooded fleece
  • Padded gilet
  • Bead necklace
  • Comfy, stylish flat shoes
  • And carried my handbag
  • 1 pair of cropped trousers
  • 1 pair of jeggings
  • 1 smart dress
  • 2 casual short-sleeved t-shirts
  • 2 smarter short-sleeved t-shirts
  • 1 evening top
  • 1 smart cardigan
  • 1 tunic/kaftan
  • 1 sarong/scarf
  • 1 pair of casual pumps
  • 1 pair of smart heels
  • 1 set of costume jewelry
  • Waterproof fold-away jacket
  • A clutch bag

I ensured my choices all co-ordinated and everything went with everything else.

Hubby wore:

  • Convertible walking trousers with a belt
  • Long-sleeved rugby shirt
  • Smart cotton sweater
  • Light jacket

And packed:

  • 1 pair of smart jeans
  • 1 pair of tailored shorts
  • 4 casual short-sleeved t-shirts
  • 3 smart long-sleeved shirts
  • 1 pair of smart shoes
  • Foldable backpack for day trips

I should say that on this cruise – and indeed all NCL cruises – there is no ‘formal night' as such. Their motto is ‘freestyle cruising' and you're free to ‘dress as you please'. They had one ‘Dress up, if you want' night when I wore my smart dress (I wore it another night too) but there was no requirement for men to wear suits of any kind. We did see a few people in black tie, if that's your preference, but plenty more in just jeans. The women probably dressed up a little more (on all nights). The only dress restriction is no shorts or sportswear in a couple of the restaurants, but everywhere else pretty much anything goes which makes the packing a little easier, especially for men.

Dress up, if you want (some did, some didn't)

Dress up, if you want (some did, some didn't)

The only things we didn't wear were the swimwear and my kaftan – to be honest we rarely do, but better to take them just in case. We've cruised before but not at this time of year, and one thing I hadn't thought about was the darker evenings – sunset was usually by about 5pm, so by the time we were back on board from a day's sightseeing there wasn't really time for lounging by the pool.

Weather-wise we were very lucky. Most days a short-sleeved shirt was sufficient, without ever being uncomfortably hot. It's a great time to visit the med for sightseeing; in the heat of summer I don't think we'd have had the stamina to see as much as we did (and there's plenty to see). We were caught in a couple of rain showers, and one thing I didn't pack was an umbrella ; I generally prefer a hat and coat at home, but in hindsight one would have been useful (although you can easily buy one – souvenir touts seemed to spring up with them just when needed!). I noticed that the Italians particularly all carried large, stylish umbrellas with proper handles (not compact ones) so if you use one it won't be out of place. There was one torrential downpour in the morning in Livorno; thankfully we hadn't got up too early and were still having breakfast so didn't get wet, but the upper decks of the ship were swimming in puddles!

When embarking the ship there was a luggage drop-off point just as you went inside the terminal, and they will deliver your cases to your stateroom for you. Ours arrived within an hour or so, but there can sometimes be a wait so if there are items you need urgently (swimwear perhaps) it's best to take these in your carry-on.

The disembarkation process was very smooth too, and with NCL you can just walk off with your own luggage at any time if you wish, which I like (so long as you're off by 9am). Otherwise you can leave your cases outside your room the night before (by 10pm) and they will be taken off for you. You are then given a timeslot to disembark, and the luggage is all waiting in the terminal for you to pick up. We preferred to walk off by ourselves, as on previous cruises we've had a really early timeslot (like 6am, although it was hard to see that the slots were enforced – they will hardly prevent you disembarking if you're late!). It did mean taking our cases to breakfast with us, so another good reason to minimise your luggage.

Norwegian Epic - All outside staterooms have balconies

Docked in Naples

We'd booked a taxi to take us back to Rome's Fiumicino airport, as there is no direct train from Civitavecchia (you have to change at Trastevere). Although, having used the Italian trains quite a bit by then I think it would have been pretty easy.

There was a lot of building work going on at Fiumicino, and whilst the Alitalia check-in desk is in Terminal 1, you actually fly from Terminal 3 – this means a lot of walking and an extra shuttle bus ride, so do allow plenty of time.

Oh, and that baggage fare? When we checked in to come home, our tickets came up as being a ‘Light' fare, which didn't include baggage. I thought this was a mistake – we'd checked a bag on the outbound flight after all – but we ended up having to pay 30 Euros. Thankfully we only had the one case, but I was so embarrassed! I had booked the flights on Expedia , and on reviewing the booking later couldn't see anything that indicated a Light fare, or that the two legs of the journey were different. I did complain, and was pleasantly surprised to get a refund of the baggage fee some weeks later! So, something to be wary of if flying Alitalia , and/or when booking on Expedia – I hope they've made things clearer now.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I wish I'd known before sailing in the Mediterranean.

  • I've been on 50 cruises around the world and took my first Mediterranean route last year.
  • Picking the right time of the season to go can make a big difference in your trip.
  • Before packing, I always check to see if any of the experiences I've booked have a dress code.

Insider Today

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

med cruise october weather

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

med cruise october weather

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

med cruise october weather

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

med cruise october weather

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

med cruise october weather

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations , I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late.
