Scheffler has dominated this year, winning six times on the PGA Tour, including his second Masters title, plus he won the gold medal at the Olympics earlier this month in Paris.

He leads second-ranked Xander Schauffele by more nearly 1,200 FedEx Cup points, and third-ranked Hideki Matsuyama by more than 2,700 points, which is about the same margin Matsuyama has on the No. 50 player in the standings, Eric Cole.

This is year six of the Tour Championship’s handicapped format where players are given starting scores based on their position in the FedEx Cup standings entering the week. Scheffler will start this week at East Lake with a two-stroke lead on Schauffele and a 10-stroke lead on Justin Thomas, the last man in the field at No. 30 in the standings .

The change was made because under the old format, a player could win the Tour Championship and not win the FedEx Cup. It was also difficult to calculate points and keep track for the viewer at home.

This way, there is no more worrying about points and whoever wins the Tour Championship, starting strokes included, wins the FedEx Cup and the $25 million first-place prize.

Now you might think the player at the top might have a significant advantage, but in fact, the top seed has only won the Tour Championship twice in the previous five editions of this format. Scheffler himself has yet to prevail when being sported a two-stroke lead the past two seasons.

In his two most recent FedEx Cup victories, Rory McIlroy came back from five and six shots back at the start of the week to hoist the trophy (and massive first-place payday) by Sunday evening. Last year, Viktor Hovland was two strokes back of Scheffler when he lapped everyone at East Lake to win his first FedEx Cup.

You can follow the action from 1-6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s broadcast is 1-2:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 2:30-7 p.m. on NBC, and Sunday’s final round is 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on NBC.

Why Matt Fitzpatrick was unable to replace cracked driver at BMW Championship

During Sunday's final round of the BMW Championship, Matt Fitzpatrick called for a ruling on the eighth tee after noticing a crack in his driver clubface. He was not able to replace the damaged club, however.

This is why.

PGA TOUR Chief Referee Stephen Cox said a "minor crack" was visible on the face of Fitzpatrick's driver. While a crack can impact the club's performance, it does not meet the threshold of being "significantly damaged" that would allow it to be replaced under the USGA's Model Local Rule G-9. The rule provides examples of when a club may be replaced, while also stating that "a club face or clubhead is not 'broken or significantly damaged' solely because it is cracked."

“The rule details a number of situations where the club would be allowed to be replaced, but the rule states that a crack in and of itself does not meet the threshold of being significantly damaged," Cox said. "In our assessment -- not only the first official, but also a couple of others including myself -- that threshold of being significantly damaged hadn't been met. Although there was a small crack in the face, there was no separation in the metals and on that basis that threshold wasn't met."

England’s Fitzpatrick came into the week at 36th in the FedExCup standings, needing a strong finish at Castle Pines to advance to the top-30 TOUR Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, where someone will win the FedExCup.

Rounds of 74-72-71 put him on his back foot, and he needed a low one Sunday. He made seven birdies Sunday but they were offset by three bogeys and a double bogey, en route to a 2-under 70 that will leave him shy of a trip to East Lake.

Fitzpatrick finished the week at 1-under 287, in the middle of the pack on the Castle Pines leaderboard.

Matt Fitzpatrick wasn’t allowed to replace his cracked driver for the last 10 holes of the final round of the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club on Sunday after a PGA Tour rules official determined the damage didn’t qualify as significant.

“This is outrageous, it’s an absolute disgrace,” said Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick called for a ruling on the eighth tee after he detected a crack in the middle of the face of his driver. Model Local Rule G-9 in the U.S. Golf Association’s Rules of Golf states a club isn’t replaceable solely because of a crack. A PGA Tour rules official determined that Fitzpatrick couldn’t replace the club due to a lack of significant damage.

Fitzpatrick, who entered the week at No. 36 in the FedEx Cup standings, didn’t agree and voiced his disgust.

“It has to be significant, surely,” Fitzpatrick said.

“They made the rule so it had to be folding in on its own,” the first rules official said.

“Terrible rule,” Kevin Kisner said on NBC. “This is a no-brainer.”

The rules official, speaking to a colleague via walkie-talkie noted he could see the crack and feel it with his fingernail.

“Not enough in my opinion looking at it to justify that,” he said. “I can feel it with my nail, about a half an inch crack right in the center of the face.”

The local rule cited doesn’t cover Fitzpatrick’s damage. Another rules official cited a previous situation with Seung Yul Noh as precedent for not allowing Fitzpatrick to swap the club out with one of the two drivers in his locker.

“There’s an obvious crack there that is causing a defect to the ball flight,” Fitzpatrick said.

“We have said no to something worse than this,” the rules official said, who took the club to chief referee Stephen Cox.

“So, I’m going to have to hit my 3-wood the rest of the day is what you’re telling me?” Fitzpatrick said.

When told the final verdict, Fitzpatrick uttered, “this is an absolute joke.”

Cox gave a detailed explanation of why Fitzpatrick’s request to change out his driver was denied.

“We on the PGA Tour in very similar to other major golf tours around the world have a slightly stricter guideline in terms of when a player is permitted to take a damaged club out of play, and that club needs to be significantly damaged,” he said. “In our assessment, not only with the first official but also a couple of others including myself, that threshold of being significantly damaged hadn’t been significant met. Although there was a small crack in the face, there was no separation in the metals, and on that basis, that threshold wasn’t met, so his only choice in that case was to continue using that club.

“Now, if that club were to get worse, then we would obviously continue to reassess, and at that point he may have been able to have taken it out, but in his case, I think he chose not to continue to use it and proceeded with his 3-wood from then on.”

Matt Fitzpatrick’s PGA Tour season ended on an angry note on Sunday.

The Englishman failed to make the top 30 and advance to East Lake for the season-ending PGA Tour Championship — and in part, has a defective driver and a dubious ruling to blame.

Fitzpatrick feuded with PGA officials on the eighth hole Sunday at the BMW Championship over switching drivers after his had a visible crack in it.

Officials ruled the crack was not significant enough to warrant Fitzpatrick switching to a new driver head.

Fitzpatrick complained the decision was “outrageous” and an “absolute joke” as he went on to hook his drive on No. 8 left and “about 50 yards shorter than it’s gone all day.”

“In our assessment, not only with the first official but also a couple of others including myself, that threshold of being significantly damaged hadn’t been significant met,” PGA Tour chief referee Stephen Cox said, according to Golf Digest.

“Although there was a small crack in the face, there was no separation in the metals, and on that basis, that threshold wasn’t met, so his only choice in that case was to continue using that club. Now, if that club were to get worse, then we would obviously continue to reassess, and at that point, he may have been able to have taken it out, but in his case, I think he chose not to continue to use it and proceeded with his 3-wood from then on.”

Kevin Kisner, who was on the call for PGA Tour Live, slammed the rule as “terrible.”

“I guarantee you he hit that to prove a point,” Kisner said after Fitzpatrick’s wayward drive on 8.

The top 30 on the money list advance from the BMW Championship, which was held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado, to the Tour Championship, and after birdieing the first three holes, Fitzpatrick appeared to be poised to move on.

The Tour Championship, the final event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, has a lucrative prize pool with $25 million going to the winner and even the player who finishes last gets $550,000.

Fitzpatrick bogeyed No. 8 and doubled No. 10 before rebounding down the stretch, though not enough to make the cut.

Fitzpatrick finished tied for 28th in the BMW and 40th overall on the money list.

Newly minted Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley won the event by one shot over Ludvig Aberg, Adam Scott and Sam Burns.

After teeing off on the par-5 8th hole, Matt Fitzpatrick noticed a slight crack in his driver, which clearly affected his ball flight.

He called over a PGA Tour rules official, who inspected the small crevice that scarred the middle of the face. The referee then used his nail to coarse the crack, examining it intently to see if Fitzpatrick could replace his driver head midway through his round. The 2022 U.S. Open champion said he had a couple of spare driver heads in his locker and would make the switch at the turn if allowed.

However, the official, citing a United States Golf Association’s (USGA) model local rule, deemed that the club was not replaceable due to the crack’s lack of severity. Therefore, Fitzpatrick could not replace the head due to a lack of significant damage.

The Englishman called the verdict “outrageous,” adding that he would have to hit 3-wood off the tee for the rest of the day.

“There was a minor crack in the actual center part of the face, of which you could not only see, but there was some degree of feel attached to that. This is where the committee has to make a decision as to whether that club is significantly damaged. As opposed to the normal rules of golf that apply to everyone else, he would be able to replace that damaged club because it didn’t happen in cases of abuse, for example,” explained Stephen Cox, the chief referee for the BMW Championship this week.

“But we on the PGA Tour, very similar to other major golf tours around the world, have a slightly stricter guideline regarding when a player is permitted to take a damaged club out of play, and that club needs to be significantly damaged. In our assessment, not only with the first official but also a couple of others, including myself, that threshold of being significantly damaged hadn’t been significantly met. Although there was a small crack in the face, there was no separation in the metals, and on that basis, that threshold wasn’t met, so his only choice in that case was to continue using that club.”

Cox added that if Fitzpatrick damaged it further, the tour would reexamine it and then reassess its decision. As such, Fitzpatrick tried to use his cracked driver on the difficult par-4 10th. But he hit a snap hook off the tee. He wound up making double, further fueling his frustration.

Despite that, Fitzpatrick did bounce back somewhat, making four birdies and two bogies over his final six holes. He posted a 2-under 70 for his final round, which put him in a tie for 26th. But his late rally down the stretch was not enough. Unfortunately, Fitzpatrick did not qualify for next week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta , as the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings make it to East Lake. Fitzpatrick is projected to finish 36th, thus missing the Tour Championship for the first time since 2021.

So not only does Fitzpatrick leave Colorado with a cracked driver, but he also finishes his PGA Tour season with a sour taste.

At least he finished among the top 50, thus guaranteeing him a spot in every Signature Event next season . Hopefully, he will have a more suitable driver by then.
