The Best Walking Tours in Athens

Cityscape of Athens, Greece.

There once was a time when Athens was considered the most overrated capital in Europe .

But that was before the 2004 Olympics.

The Greek government got itself in order for just long enough to clean up and renovate this ancient metropolis. It added subway lines and a better connection to the airport. It fixed up crumbling structures and cleaned the streets. It sounds like a cliché straight out of a travel magazine, but now this city of just over three million inhabitants really is better than ever.

And, while Athens has never been my favorite destination in Europe, the Greek capital does have a lot to offer, including the Plaka neighborhood, a labyrinth of bar-flanked streets underneath the Acropolis, and one of my favorite parts of Athens.

But besides that, Athens is 5,000 years old . How many cities can you say that about? Stroll around the Acropolis to gawk at the biggest collection of ancient Greek ruins in the world.

If you want to really understand the city, take a walking tour. This will not only give you a lay of the land and introduce you to the main sights but provide access to an expert local guide who can answer all your questions and share insider tips.

No matter your budget or interests, there is one that will deepen your experience and help you make the most of your time here.

Here’s some of the best walking tours in Athens:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

There’s something about Take Walks . Nearly everywhere they give tours, they always seem to have an inside edge that other such companies don’t have. In Madrid, you get to go into the Royal Palace an hour before it’s open to the public. In Rome, you can meet the key master of the Vatican in the morning and accompany him as he walks around the museums, unlocking all the doors.

In Athens — surprise, surprise — they’ll get you into the Parthenon before any other visitors. It’s just you and thousands of years of history, quietly sizing each other up. In addition to that, you’ll also get to stroll around the ancient agora, as well as Plaka, my favorite neighborhood — and all with an expert local guide.

Best Free Tour

Athens Free Walking Tour logo

Athens Free Walking Tour

Athens Free Walking Tours is an assemblage of local volunteer historians, guides, and scholars who love Athens and love talking about it. The two-hour walks go at an easy pace and are very informative, coving all the main historic sites around the city. If you just want a basic intro to the city, this is it. (While they’re technically “free,” tips are appreciated (and expected), so don’t come empty-handed.)

Ancient Acropolis in Athens, Greece

Devour is my favorite food tour company, with a presence across Europe and the States. In Athens, they offer an Ultimate Athens Food Tour, where you’ll get a calorie-laden introduction to the local cuisine with thirteen tastings across nine traditional establishments in three historic neighborhoods. You’ll dip into bowls of honey-slathered Greek yogurt, mouth-tackle a souvlaki, sample fresh cheeses and cold cuts, and visit the central market. This is a must for foodies like me.

Tours start at 69 EUR.

2. Athens Walks

Athens Walks offers several different types by foot — from general, small-group tours that give you a good overview to more specific small-group ones, such as those just focusing on the Acropolis or nightlife or the food and dining scene. Apart from the morning and afternoon Acropolis group tours, which are two hours long, most of the tours offered by Athens Walks last about four hours.

Tours start at 35 EUR.

3. Alternative Athens

This company leads guided, small-group tours that focus on art, design, fashion, and street food. One of the most interesting and enlightening is the street art walk since Athens is starting to rival Berlin for its vibrant art scene and the mesmerizing creations that coat the walls along the streets are definite must-sees. And you’ll discover some cool new neighborhoods along the way!

Tours start at 49 EUR.

4. Eureka Athens

Eureka is ancient Greek for “I found it.” Whatever you’re looking for in Athens, this company may help you find it. If you’re in search of strange feasting, its “Bizarre Food Tour” will certainly lead you in the right direction, taking you to hidden shops and bakeries and through markets to find the oddest eats in the Greek capital. There are also kid-focused tours, as well as ones that zero in on wine, shopping, and specific up-and-coming neighborhoods.

5. Athens Photos Tours

Are you a budding photographer? Want to level up your Insta game to wow friends back home? Then this photo walking tour is for you. Choose the time of day you want — sunrise, morning, sunset, or evening — and then you and up to three other camera-wielding future influencers will be led by a professional photographer who will share professional tips and advice to help you hone your photo skills.

Tours start at 99 EUR.

6. Athens Bike Tours

If you prefer pedals to going bipedal, this three-hour tour is for you. After all, on a bike, you can cover more ground (but don’t worry, these outings aren’t rushed). Guides lead your pack of cyclists to panoramic views of the city, through the ancient Greek and Roman agoras, past museums, and through hip, off-the-radar neighborhoods. They also conduct rides on electric bikes in case you’re feeling lazy after a few days of exploring.

Tours start at 36 EUR.

7. Athens Walking Tours

This company does several small-group walks around Athens, all led by long-time, licensed guides. There is a plethora of options: tours that focus on Greek mythology and ones at the Acropolis that really dig into the history of the place. There’s an off-the-beaten-path option and a one that just takes you around the Acropolis Museum. And those are just the cultural and historical tours. Athens Walking Tours also offers an array of food-and-wine-themed options too.

Whether it’s your first time in Athens or your twenty-first, a walking tour is a fun, simple way to deepen your experience and learn more about this historic capital. Regardless of your interests or budget, there are offerings here that will add depth and authenticity to any trip. I always take at least one walking tour when I visit. You should too!

Excellent tour, our guide Sissy made the experience interesting and related to current everyday life. She made what I thought would be a difficult walk up to the Acropolis very manageable with plenty of stops to share her knowledge of the Acropolis and Greek culture . Highly recommend!

Free walking tours are tours that have no upfront cost and therefore are technically free.

However, these tours are well-understood as pay-what-you-wish tours, meaning that you pay what you think the tour is worth at the end.

The popularity of the tours means that group sizes are very large, especially during the busy summer season.

For travelers who want to have more interaction with their tour guide with smaller groups of tourists, we recommend paid small-group tours .

These outings sometimes take place on tourist buses, allowing you to save both time and energy!

TIP: If you want a tour of Athens and some surrounding areas combined with convenient transportation, hop-on-hop-off tours are a popular option.

Cruising The Mediterranean: Athens to Naples

April 28 - May 7, 2025

Sicily Taormina Amphitheater

Group Size: Hebridean Sky can accommodate up to 96 passengers for this voyage Price: Starting from $6,990 per person double occupancy, $10,990 single occupancy Co-sponsored with: Archaeological Institute of America, Cornell's Adult University, Williams Alumni Travel Study, Yale Alumni Academy

Trip Overview

This seven-night Mediterranean cruise highlights archaeological sites that are remnants of the grand civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. Begin in Athens with either an in-depth exploration of the Acropolis and its incomparable Parthenon (including the Acropolis Museum) or with a special tour of the private Goulandris Museum. See where the Oracle spoke to Greek citizens at Delphi. Go for a run on the original track at Olympia. Marvel at the 3rd c. BC Greco-Roman amphitheater at Taormina and the stunning Greek Temple of Neptune at Paestum before visiting fascinating Pompeii for a look at what the Roman life was like before Mt. Vesuvius erupted. There will also be opportunities to participate in optional pre-and post-trip extensions in Athens and Rome.

Schedule by Day

Depart the U.S. on an overnight flight to Athens, Greece.

Arrive Tuesday, April 28, and transfer to the centrally located Athens Capital Hotel—MGallery Collection adjacent to the Plaka for an orientation, welcome reception, and dinner

Overnight:  Capital Center Hotel – MGallery Collection

In the morning, drive to Mt. Parnassus to climb the spectacular ruins of Delphi, the influential oracular sanctuary to Apollo. Considered by the ancient Greeks to be the center of the world and where the Oracle’s pronouncements were sought for centuries, the remarkable setting and architecture evoke the same reverence today as they did thousands of years ago.

Drive to the Port of Itea and embark the Hebridean Sky in the early evening.

Overnight: Hebridean Sky

Meals: B, L, D

Stroll the narrow streets of Galaxidi this morning, a picturesque town overlooking the Mediterranean. Enjoy time for independent exploration after a guided walking tour.

Enjoy an afternoon of cruising and attending on board lectures.

In the evening, attend the Captain’s welcome reception and dinner aboard the ship.

Today visit Olympia, the iconic site of the ancient Olympic Games. During the Games, the Greek citystates were bound by a truce that forbade hostilities and focused attention strictly on athletic competition. Visit the temples, stadium, sanctuary, and stoa and view the museum’s impressive statues and artifacts. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to race on the original Olympic track.

Founded around 734 B.C. by Greek Corinthians, Siracusa was conquered and ruled by Romans, Saracens, Byzantines, Normans, and Ottomans, who each left a legacy of archaeological treasures that have earned the city UNESCO World Heritage status.

Continue to the adjacent fortified island of Ortygia with highlights including Cathedral Square and a Jewish mikveh (bath). Later, in a nearby private palazzo dating back to the Middle Ages, enjoy a wine tasting hosted by a nobleman and admire a collection of etchings of ancient Siracusa and Sicily.

This evening either join an after-dark architectural walk or explore independently before returning to the ship.

Today choose between three excursion options: 1) An early departure for the slopes of Mt. Etna to see the Silvestri Crater with an opportunity to ride the cable car to the summit; 2) A visit to the 3rd century B.C. Greco-Roman theater at Taormina followed by free time in town; 3) A journey through the Sicilian countryside for a hike in Alcantara Gorge, an impressive canyon formed by the Alcantara River and lava flows from Mt. Etna.

Dock this morning in Salerno for a short drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Paestum, an ancient Greek city famous for its three excellently preserved Doric Greek temples, dating from 550 to 450 BC. Marvel at the magnificent Temple of Neptune—the most complete of the three temples—which is said to be modeled after the Temple of Zeus in Olympia. This afternoon cruise along the picturesque Amalfi Coast to Sorrento, a small coastal city famous for its sea cliffs.

Sorrento, with its spectacular views over the Bay of Naples, is the base for today’s excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Roman Pompeii. This ancient city was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79 and its well-preserved ruins continue to provide a unique glimpse into ancient Roman daily life. View the fascinating ruins of Pompeii and uncover an ancient city frozen in time.

Disembark in Naples this morning and transfer to Naples-Capodichino International Airport for flights home or begin the optional post-tour extension in Rome.

What to Expect

This is a moderately active program with considerable walking most days, often on cobblestoned and uneven terrain, and extended periods of standing. Participants must be in good health and able to keep up with the group with limited assistance from tour staff. Many historic buildings and archaeological sites do not have elevators, and you’ll occasionally encounter steps without handrails. These adventure-filled days are offset by relaxing time spent cruising at sea, with the opportunity to enjoy the ship’s amenities and the full lecture program.

Anyone with a serious medical problem, whose medical situation might be adversely affected by active travel, or who might have difficulty walking, should not consider this program.

This promises to be a memorable journey, but as with all travel, a flexible attitude, a spirit of adventure, and a willingness to explore new areas will enhance your enjoyment of this program. You do not have to participate in all of the scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination. We are sure you will be pleased with the exciting educational program provided, but we want you to be aware of the pace and activity level.
