Yunnan, located in the southwest corner of China, is one of the country's most fascinating and beautiful provinces. The diversity of Yunnan's landscape, from the lush countryside of the Hani Rice Terraces to the towering peaks of the Himalayan Mountains, mirrors the ethnic diversity of its people. Twenty-five of China's 56 ethnic minorities can be found in Yunnan, where they make up around 40% of the population. This mix of varied cultures and landscapes makes Yunnan a veritable melting pot and an increasingly popular (but still off the beaten path) tourist destination.

Things to Do and Travel Advice

Ganden Sumtseling Monastery

In times gone by, Yunnan's capital city, Kunming, was considered a southern gateway to the Silk Road. Nowadays it is the perfect starting point for tourists who wish to travel through Yunnan province. Situated on a plateau and surrounded by mountains and lakes, Kunming has a temperate climate all year round, earning it the nickname "city of eternal spring." It is also one of the least polluted cities in China.

Kunming has plenty to offer tourists planning to travel elsewhere in Yunnan Province, and is certainly worth spending a night there on the way to Yunnan's other attractions. The geological wonder of Stone Forest Geological Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an hour drive outside of the city.

From Kunming, many visitors head to Dali, which is accessible by high-speed train. This peaceful mountain town is the former capital of the ancient Kingdom of Dali, which ruled this part of China during the 9th and 10th centuries, and is known for its scenic setting and traditional Bai-style architecture. Just outside of Dali Old Town is the beautiful Erhai Lake , overlooked by Dali’s iconic Chongsheng Three Pagodas.

Lijiang Old Town

The ancient mountain town of Lijiang is another popular destination for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This ancient alpine retreat lies in the shadow of the imposing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and features a variety of interesting historical sites, like the 800-year old lanes of Lijiang Old Town , as well as a vibrant nightlife.

Situated between Dali and Lijiang, Shaxi Ancient Town is less visited than its two more popular counterparts, but it is full of authentic architecture dating back to its time as a main market town along the Tea Horse Road, making it an excellent location to soak in the atmosphere of Yunnan’s colorful history.

For those interested in China's religious heritage, Buddhist relics and temples abound in the city of Shangri-La, which lies near the Tibetan border. One of Shangri-La's most impressive structures is the majestic Ganden Sumsteling Monastery , nicknamed "Little Potala Palace" due to its resemblance to the famed monastic complex in Lhasa.

Shaxi Ancient Town

Situated on the Tibetan Plateau, Yunnan features a host of natural wonders as well. Not far from Shangri-La is Potatso National Park , China's first internationally recognized national park, which provides stunning insight into various facets of the alpine ecosystem. If nature is what you’re after, Tiger Leaping Gorge is home to some of China’s most dazzling landscapes and boasts a number of world-famous hiking trails.

No trip to Yunnan is complete without a visit to its famed Hani Rice Terraces. This extensive and magnificent agricultural site has been in operation for more than 1,000 years and is known for its steep and intricate terraced hills, which provide some of China’s most iconic and dazzling views.

Eating in Yunnan

Yunnan cuisine is as diverse as its population, and cooking styles and flavors vary by region and ethnic group. That said, it's hard to go wrong with food in Yunnan, as each culinary style is delicious in its own way. Many of Yunnan's most popular dishes are spicy, and mushrooms are an especially popular ingredient.

Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces

While in Kunming, you can try the regional specialty known as "Crossing the Bridge Noodles," a delicious noodle soup that is brought to you boiling in a covered stone bowl, with a tray of fresh ingredients such as finely sliced pork, quail eggs, and sliced herbs and vegetables for you to add to the broth according to your tastes.

Popular Nighttime Activities in Yunnan

Kunming is home to the fascinating Dynamic Yunnan show, which features sensational costumes and choreography and incorporates traditional folk songs and dances, affording a unique glimpse into Yunnan’s cultural diversity.

The smaller mountain city of Lijiang also has many fun activities for night owls. A peaceful alpine town by day, the ancient lanes of Lijiang Old Town really come alive once the sun goes down. Xinhua Street, in particular, is known for its bars, many of which feature song and dance shows by local performers from the Naxi ethnic minority.

Best Time to Visit Yunnan

Yunnan has a unique climate influenced by its high altitude and southern latitude, making it pretty comfortable all year round. Summers are warm but temperatures rarely exceed 27°C/80°F. Winters too are rather mild, with average temperatures ranging from 8°C/46°F to 17°C/63°F. Because of its temperate weather, Yunnan is lovely to visit at any time of the year. It does rain quite a bit in the spring, however, so summer or fall are probably the best times to travel there. Be sure to bring a light jacket no matter what time of year you go to Yunnan, as the evenings can get chilly.

Transportation

Kunming, as Yunnan's largest city and capital, is the transport hub for the province. The Kunming Airport is well connected to many of China's cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, and Kunming can be reached via high-speed train as well. Once in Kunming, it is most convenient to travel around Yunnan by car, plane, or high-speed train.

Latest News from Our Guides

June 28, 2018 As of July 1, 2018, the Kunming to Dali high-speed railway is officially open, reducing the travel time between Kunming and Dali from over 5 hours to 112 minutes. The second-class ticket from Kunming to Dali is 145 RMB.

    yunnan tourist sites

Like Guilin, Kunming is also well known for its beautiful and peculiar, breathtaking and unique natural landscape. Among these dramatic sites, Yunnan Stone Forest , which is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the city proper and requires only a three-hour drive, is known best by visitors. These magnificent stone masterpieces, various strange and steep intricate formations, and countless labyrinthine vistas make Stone Forest (Shi Lin in Chinese) worthy of the fame as the 'First Wonder of the World'. And there goes a local saying: 'It is a waste of time without being in the Stone Forest while visiting Kunming'. Dianchi Lake, the largest lake of Kunming, enchants people with its cyan water and peaceful environment. It is a favorite with those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life. A visit to the Golden Temple is strongly recommended. It is the largest copper temple in China. Here you can see something of the origins of Taoism as the temple is located on Fengming Hill, the home of the Taoist Taihe Palace (Hall of Supreme Harmony).

China is an incredible country, brimming with epic sights, exciting experiences and a fascinating history spanning back thousands of years. However, with so much to see and so many  places to visit in China , it’s best to focus on one area when deciding on an itinerary, rather than trying to see too much. If you have only 10 days and want to see China at its most vibrant, a Yunnan itinerary is hard to beat.

    Blue moon valley Yunnan China

Why you should travel to Yunnan province?

Yunnan province in southwestern China is one of the most varied and diverse provinces in China, both in terms of natural beauty and cultural experiences. This province is incredibly diverse, with steaming jungles with elephants in the south, all the way to the borders of the Tibetan plateau in the north.

Between these extremes, you’ll find some of the finest attractions in China. Whether you’re looking to explore ancient towns, see ethnic minority groups, hike the spectacular Tiger Leaping Gorge,   be blown away by the incredible  Blue Moon Valley , or want to indulge in unique Chinese food, Yunnan truly has it all.

Yunnan has a very pleasant climate, and can be visited throughout the year. With good infrastructure, visiting Yunnan is easy and can easily be done independently.

If you’re looking for the best Yunnan itinerary for 10 days, you can’t go wrong with the Kunming – Dali – Lijiang – Tiger Leaping Gorge route.

    How to get to Yunnan

The gateway to Yunnan province is the capital city of Kunming (also known as The Spring City due it’s fantastic climate).

Kunming Changshui International Airport is well connected with the rest of China, as well as other Asian countries such as Thailand , Korea, Vietnam , Nepal and Indonesia . Lijiang also has an airport, but it’s often cheaper and more convenient to fly to Kunming.

    Chinese high speed train

Kunming can also be reached from all over China with high-speed trains which make traveling to Kunming easy and comfortable, there are 10 high-speed trains between Kunming and Chengdu each day with the faster only taking 5hours and 8min. 3 high-speed trains from Beijing each day with the faster only taking 10 hours and 49 min to travel the 1,700 miles (2,735 km) distance between the two cities. 4 high-speed trains between Shanghai and Kunming each day, taking 10 hours and 39 min for the 2,266 km (1, 408 miles) long journey. This is also China’s longest east-west high-speed rail line And Kunming has more than 20 high-speed trains to Guangzhou everyday, with the fastest only taking 6 hours and 32min to complete the 1658km (1,030 miles) long journey. Day 1: Kunming to Dali

With only 10 days, you will unfortunately not have much time to spend in Kunming. Instead make your way to Kunming Railway station right away to catch a bullet train to Dali.

To get from the airport to Kunming Railway Station, take the airport shuttle bus from just outside the arrival terminal. Bus number 2 or 6 both go to the station, and should take about 45 minutes depending on traffic. Buses run every half hour and cost RMB 25.

    Kunming Yunnan China

There is a train to Dali every 20 minutes or so, and the journey takes about 2.5 hours. For convenience, it’s best to book your train tickets online at Trip.com.

Once you arrive in Dali, make your way to Dali Old Town, which is about 30 minutes by bus away from Dali station.

    Day 2,3: Dali

The  Old Town of Dali  has been a favourite amongst local and international visitors for years, yet it still retains a lot of its laid back charm and atmosphere. Dali is known as somewhat of a backpacker heaven for its laid back atmosphere, lakeside setting and great weather. People often end up staying longer than they planned. That being said, Dali has not been spoilt by mass tourism, and that is perhaps the best thing about Dali.

    daily city gate yunnan

Surrounded by a city wall and 4 gates leading into the old town, Dali is a great little town to explore on foot. Spend your first day leisurely exploring the old town.

The cobblestoned streets of the old town are filled with quirky shops selling souvenirs such as amber, Bai minority tribe handicrafts and wild mushrooms which Yunnan is famous for. Trying wild mushroom hotpot is also an excellent idea. Another snack you must try in Dali is grilled yak cheese, which Bai women grill over hot colals right on the street all over the old town.

On the second day, rent an electric scooter and head out to explore the lovely countryside around Dali.

    daili Yunnan

The imposing Three Pagodas just outside town should be your first stop. These three ancient pagodas dating back to the 10 th  century are magnificent, and the setting right in front of the Changsan Mountains are a sight to behold. The main pagoda is 16 stories high and almost 70 meters tall. Surrounding the pagodas are lovely gardens and ponds, which are perfect for getting photos with the reflections of the pagodas.

    Dali 3 pagodas Yunnan

After spending a few hours admiring the gardens, ponds, temples and pagodas, jump back on your e-bike and follow the signs to Lake Erhai.  The drive along the shores of the lake will take you past strawberry farms, mountain scenery and pretty rural villages.

Notice the cat statues on the roofs of the houses as you explore the villages of Lake Erhai. The cat statues, with the mouths wide open, have a dual purpose: scare away evil spirits, and catch good luck and wealth in their wide-open mouths.

    Day 4, 5, 6 : Lijiang

Catch the morning train from Daili at 10:00 to Lijiang and you should arrive in Lijiang before 13:00.

The picturesque old town of Lijiang is perhaps the most popular attraction in the whole of Yunnan province – for good reason.

    Lijiang streets Yunnan China

This well-preserved ancient town dating back to the 11 th  century is drop dead gorgeous with wooden architecture, cobble stoned streets, canals running through town, friendly Naxi minority people – all backed by the snow- capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain not far away.

    Old town Lijiang Yunnan China

Word of advice: Beautiful Lijiang has been popular with Chinese tourists for decades and, as a result, it can get incredibly busy. This does not mean that you should avoid visiting Lijiang. Just keep your expectations in check. To best enjoy Lijiang, get up early and enjoy the stunning town before the crowds descend. Also remember that most tourists stick to certain areas, which leaves other areas beautifully undisturbed. All things considered, Lijiang is a great place to visit, and the large number of visitors actually contribute to a lively atmosphere.

Lijiang old town in Yunnan China

Spend the next few days walking all over Lijiang and discover hidden alleys, cute teahouses and more than enough options for street food. Over the next few days, make sure to check out the following places of interest:

    Lijiang yunnan china

    The Black Dragon Pool

Just outside the old town of Lijiang, this incredible park has some of the most iconic views of Yunnan. At various points in the park, you’ll get a beautiful view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with an arched, stone bridge and pagoda in front of it, and the Black Dragon Pool in the foreground.

    Black Dragon Pool Lijiang Yunnan

Almost as spectacular as the views and the serenity of the park is the fish in the crystal-clear ponds. Thousands of fish in all sizes and colours will keep you mesmerized for quite a while. You can also buy some fish food to join the locals in feeding these beauties.

    Wangu Tower

Sitting on the highest point in Jiliang, the area surrounding the Wangu Tower offers a sweeping view over the black tiled roofs of the Lijiang Old Town. Pop into one of the many tea houses for a drink to rest your feet and enjoy the view.

    Wangu Temple Lijiang Yunnan China

    Dance in the town squares

You’ll find people of the local Naxi minority group dancing in the town squares throughout the day. Everyone is free to join in, and it’s good fun. This continues into the night, and it’s much livelier after dark. It’s very acceptable to get a cold beer from a convenience store and drink it in the squares while enjoying the entertainment.

    Visit the Tea Market

There are hundreds of Tea houses and shops scattered all throughout Lijiang Old Town. You can pop into any of them, and you’ll be treated with a little tea ceremony and the chance to try various teas.

Yunnan province is well known for its high-quality tea, of which Pu-erh tea is the most famous.

For a less touristy (and cheaper) experience, head to the Tea Market, located just outside the old town. Vendors will be quite surprised seeing foreigners here and will go out of their way to sell you some tea. Like at the tea shops in the old town, they will put on a tea ceremony and keep the good stuff coming until you’ve found what you were looking for.

    Suhe Old Town

When the crowds in Lijiang get too much, jump in a taxi and drive out to Suhe Old Town. Suhe is only 4km away from Lijiang but is a world away. Although Suhe is much smaller than Lijiang, it makes for a very enjoyable half-day trip. The Tea Horse Road Museum, set in a handsome old building offers informative displays on the history of the area and how the trade in tea has formed the history and culture in this part of Yunnan.

    Day 7: Blue Moon Valley

For once, the Blue Moon Valley is more than just a catchy name and is indeed as cool as it sounds. This incredible valley, located at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain makes for an excellent half or full-day trip from Lijiang.

    Blue moon valley Yunnan China

The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area is home to various surreal landscapes, of which the Blue Moon Valley is perhaps the most unbelievable. A series of ice-blue lakes sit right in front of the snow-capped mountain behind it, and you’ll be excused if you thought that you were dreaming and woke up somewhere in the Rockies.

An incredible sight to see it submerged trees standing like skeletons in that surreal and crystal-clear water. If you are looking for a unique photo opportunity, you could also dress up in the local Naxi attire and ride a yak in that unworldly scene.

As to be expected of one of Yunnan’s most beautiful attractions, it can get unbelievably busy. To enjoy this amazing sight, come here first thing in the morning, before the tour buses arrive.

    Blue moon valley Yunnan China

Other than the blue lakes, you could also visit meadows and grasslands, or ride a cable car to the glacier on top of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

    Day 8,9: Tiger Leaping Gorge

Two hours by bus north of Lijiang, the  Tiger Leaping Gorge  is one of China’s most spectacular (and accessible) adventures. The Tiger Leaping Gorge is the deepest gorge in the world, with a height of almost 3000 meters from the river at the bottom of the gorge to the mountain tops beside it.

    Tiger Leaping Gorge Yunnan China

Hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge usually takes two full days, but if you’re pressed for time, or don’t want to walk that long, it’s possible to cut it down to only a one-day walk.

If walking for two days, start walking at Qiaotou where the bus will drop you. From here it will take most of the day to reach the stunning Tea Horse Guesthouse where you can spend the night. Otherwise, get a taxi in Qiaotou to take you to Tea Horse Guesthouse. You could spend the rest of the day enjoying the spectacular mountain scenery, or take short walks in the area.

After a comfortable sleep, some delicious mountain food and bright starry skies, hike from Tea Horse Guesthouse to Tina’s Guesthouse.

    Tiger Leaping Gorge Yunnan

The hike between these two guesthouses is the most beautiful stretch of the gorge, and known as the Middle Gorge, takes about 6 hours to walk, and the scenery just keeps on getting better around every bend in the path. Along the way you’ll walk past waterfalls, farmers herding sheep, sheer drop-offs and you might even spot rainbow clouds if you’re lucky.

You should reach Tina’s Guesthouse around lunch, so grab a bite to eat and perhaps something stronger to celebrate the end of hike. The bus back to Lijiang leaves from Tina’s Guesthouse at around 15:30 in the afternoon. If all goes well, you should be back in Lijiang just before sunset.

    Day 10: Lijiang – Home

Today is the last day of our Yunnan itinerary. You could get a flight from Lijiang Sanyi Airport, which has good connections to most major cities in China. Alternatively, you could backtrack to Kunming in about 3 hours by fast train.

    Yunnan Itinerary Conclusion

A 10-day itinerary for Yunnan is just the right amount of time to see the highlights of northern Yunnan, without rushing it. This itinerary allows you to see the best sights and attractions in the province. With more time, you could extend your trip to include Shangri la on the eds of the Tibetan world, or perhaps spend a day or two in Kunming or travel to the southern part of Yunnan to visit either the Yunnan Stone Forest or the Yuanyang Rice Terraces , which are both UNESCO World Heritage sites. With fewer days, consider culling a day from Lijiang.

Meaning "black gold," Ouro Preto was once abundant in gold deposits and became a prominent gold mining area from 1720 to 1897 . Slowly, through the decades, as the deposits dwindled toward the 20th century, so did its gold mining activities and, thus, the town's prosperity.

Sewell mining town, chile, although left behind, this unesco town in the andes is a reminder of what could've been.

Sitting comfortably in the Andes, some miles from Rancagua and Santiago, the Sewell Mining Town stands quietly uninhabited. Sewell served as a town for miners who worked at El Teniente, the world's largest underground copper mine. The Braden Copper Company constructed this now-uninhabited town in the early 20th century.

A town specifically built for workers may not sound too appealing, but residents in Sewell enjoyed a comfortable life despite living in a harsh mountain climate. Workers had access to a cinema, a hospital, spacious living quarters, and other amenities like heated pools, a club, and a theater! Today, Sewell can be visited through a guided tour, and it is not possible to visit this ghost town by car.

Promotion event of Chinese tea culture, Yunnan Province culture, tourism held in Myanmar

    Saturday, 10 Aug 2024

YANGON, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A promotion event of Chinese tea culture and China's Yunnan Province culture and tourism was held in Yangon, Myanmar on Friday.

The event was hosted by the China Cultural Center in Yangon and Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. More than 100 people from China's and Myanmar's education, culture and tourism sectors attended the event.

Cao Jing, charge d'affaires of the Chinese embassy in Myanmar, said during the event that tea not only embodies the values of harmony and equality in Chinese traditional culture, but also reflects the peaceful coexistence of Chinese civilization and other civilizations around the world. Last year, China began to organize promotion events of tea culture globally. The strong support the events have received is an example of the harmonious coexistence and mutual achievement of different civilizations.

Myanmar's Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism Thet Thet Khine said the event is not only to promote cultural exchanges and tourism cooperation between Myanmar and China, but to promote traditional Chinese tea culture worldwide as well.

Wang Jianghong, deputy head of Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, said that in recent years, Yunnan Province has vigorously carried out exchanges and cooperation with Myanmar, and has achieved remarkable results in promoting connectivity and deepening cultural exchanges with Myanmar. Yunnan hopes to use tea as a medium to strengthen tea culture exchanges with Myanmar and encourage more people to understand Chinese culture.

The event included Chinese and Myanmar art performances, a tea and Yunnan-themed photo exhibition, Yunnan ethnic costumes exhibition, and a tea product display.

    • Roundup: China-Cambodia cultural corridor injects energy into regional tourism

SIEM REAP, Cambodia, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The China-Cambodia Cultural Corridor was launched on Tuesday at Siem Reap Angkor International Airport in northwest Cambodia, a new push for the development of regional tourism.

Themed "World Heritage Face to Face, Civilization Mutual Learning Hand in Hand," the cultural corridor aimed to further promote cultural diversity and heritage of the two countries as 2024 is the China-Cambodia people-to-people exchange year.

The launching ceremony was held at the airport's international passenger departure terminal, displaying some 100 exquisite pictures of China and Cambodia as well as other Lancang-Mekong countries. Visitors can also enjoy a display, with a focus on three themes of "embroidery", "carving" and "color", showcasing intangible cultural heritage of southwest China's Yunnan province and Cambodia.

At the event, the World Heritage Tour Plan, under the theme of "See 10 World Heritage Sites in 10 Days", was also launched.

Chhean Leang, secretary of state at Cambodia's Ministry of Information, said the corridor was another milestone in people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

"This cultural corridor will guide tourists from around the world to the unique and beautiful cultural heritage and sceneries of Cambodia and China as well as other Lancang-Mekong countries through the exhibition of world heritage sites and intangible cultural heritage, among others," he said at the event.

Speaking of the launch of the plan, Leang believed that these tourist routes will connect world heritage sites in six Lancang-Mekong countries and inject new impetus into the development of regional tourism.

"We warmly welcome tourists from all over the world to come and experience the charm of Cambodia," he said.

Ngov Sengkak, deputy governor of Siem Reap province, said the corridor is in line with the "Visit Siem Reap 2024" campaign, expressing confidence that it will make a positive contribution to the development of tourism in Siem Reap province.

"This cultural corridor is a vivid testament of rock-solid friendship between Cambodia and China, becoming a bridge of friendship connecting the peoples of the two countries," he said.

"The cultural corridor will help tourists gain better insights into the ancient cultural properties of Cambodia and China. I strongly believe that it will help increase the number of tourists to Siem Reap province," Sengkak added.

Wang Jianghong, deputy head of Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, said the corridor was inaugurated after China (Yunnan)- Cambodia Cultural Series on "Visiting Yunnan and Angkor" Heritage Sites were launched in June to promote historical travel and cultural heritage in both Yunnan and Cambodia.

"We hope that through this event, we can promote cooperation in culture and tourism between Yunnan and Cambodia, innovate tourism products and services, and create a new pattern of cross-border tourism cooperation," she said.

At the event, intangible cultural heritage inheritors and artists from both China and Cambodia performed intangible cultural heritage arts and flash mobs, attracting scores of participants and audiences.

With a 3,600-meter-long runway, the airport is currently Cambodia's biggest airport and is the main gateway to the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province. Enditem

How to Plan a Trip to Shanghai and Yunnan

Planning a trip to Shanghai and Yunnan combines the excitement of a modern city with the serene beauty of nature. Here's a simple guide to help you prepare for this unforgettable journey.

    Content Preview

    • How Many Days Are Needed
    • Itinerary Suggestions

    Transportation Tips

How long to spend in shanghai and yunnan.

A trip to Shanghai and Yunnan usually takes about 10–12 days, with 2–3 days in Shanghai and 8–9 days in Yunnan. Such an arrangement ensures that you wouldn't miss essential attractions and the pace of travel is relatively relaxed.

    Suggested Time in Shanghai

Shanghai's main attractions could be covered in 2–3 days.

Take 1 day for the Bund and Yu Garden, which are the most famous landmarks in Shanghai.

Spend 1 day visiting the former French Concession and Zhujiajiao Water Town to learn about Shanghai's history and the charm of water towns.

If you have extra time, consider spending another day at Shanghai Disneyland, especially if you are traveling with children, or take a 1-day side trip to nearby Suzhou or Hangzhou.

    Suggested Time in Yunnan

For a first visit to Yunnan, the major tourist cities include Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La. It usually takes about 8–9 days to visit these cities. Each takes about 2 days.

Some cities in Yunnan have high altitudes, such as Shangri-La, which might cause altitude sickness. If you are concerned about this, especially when traveling with elderly people or little kids, you could consider skipping it, making the trip take about 6–7 days.

    10-Day Shanghai and Yunnan Itinerary

Here, we offer an idea for a 10-day classic itinerary in Shanghai and Yunnan.

If you want to make some adjustments or you want to create an itinerary based on your requirements, just contact us.

    Days 1–3: Shanghai

    • Day 1: Yu Garden and the Bund (with a Huangpu River ferry experience)
    • Day 2: The former French Concession and Zhujiajiao Water Town (with a boat ride)
    • Day 3: Departure to Kunming

Our suggestions for a tour of the Bund :

Most people visit the Bund to take photos and capture the stunning skyline along the famous Huangpu River. However, we believe the charm of the Bund goes far beyond that.

Each historical building in this area has its own captivating story and the small alleys hold the essence of Shanghai's local life. Additionally, the local snacks are a culinary delight not to be missed.

Walking is the best way to explore these charms (even better is a local guide to take you into the buildings and share the local life with you). If this sounds like an experience you would enjoy, we would be delighted to plan an itinerary for you.

If you only have 1 day in Shanghai :

Yu Garden, the Bund, and the former French Concession could all be visited in 1 day, but this may leave no time for a ferry ride and a visit to a water town (which would be a pity).

To make the most of your day, it's important to arrange transportation in advance. Booking a vehicle for the entire day or a private tour with transfers would save more time for sightseeing. Visiting on a weekday could also help you avoid the crowds and reduce waiting times.

    Days 4–10: Yunnan

    • Day 4: The Stone Forest
    • Day 5: Transfer to Dali: Erhai Lake and Xizhou Village
    • Day 6: Transfer to Lijiang: Lijiang Old Town
    • Day 7: Visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Baisha Village
    • Day 8: Transfer to Shangri-La with a trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge
    • Day 9: Songzanlin Lamasery and Pudacuo National Park
    • Day 10: Departure

Your Yunnan trip begins in Kunming. Start by visiting the Stone Forest, Kunming's most famous attraction, where you could experience the customs of Yunnan's Yi minority and take stunning photos of the impressive limestone formations.

In Dali, focus on sightseeing around Erhai Lake and Xizhou Ancient Town. In the evening, you could explore Dali Old Town and stay overnight there.

While touring Er Lake, you could also enjoy backdrop views of Cang Mountain. If you wish to visit Cang Mountain, you would need to stay an extra day in Dali.

Next, head to Lijiang to explore Lijiang Old Town. If time permits, visit Black Dragon Pool Park, located not far from the ancient town, which offers an excellent point for photographing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

A visit to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Baisha Village could be done in 1 day. Baisha Village, at the foot of the snow mountain, provides insights into the life and culture of the Naxi people of Lijiang.

On your way from Lijiang to Shangri-La, make a stop to tour Tiger Leaping Gorge. Upon arriving in Shangri-La, take some time to rest at the hotel to acclimate to the high altitude.

The next day, visit the famous Songzanlin Monastery to experience Buddhist culture, then head to Pudacuo National Park to enjoy its stunning scenery of highland lakes, forests, and grasslands.

    Recommended Tours

    • 2-Day Shanghai and Zhujiajiao Water Town Tour
    • 8-Day Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La Tour
    • 15-Day Shanghai and Yunnan Tour

Or you could contact us to create your itinerary based on your requirements.

Here are some questions you may be concerned about regarding transportation in Yunnan and Shanghai.

Should You Go to Shanghai or Yunnan First?

If you are flying from Southeast Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, then going to either Shanghai or Yunnan first is okay because direct flights are available to Yunnan's Kunming and Shanghai.

You could choose a flight that fits your budget and departure time.

If you are flying from America or Europe, going to Shanghai first is recommended. This is because Shanghai serves more international flights.

How to Travel Between Shanghai and Yunnan

Flying is the best and fastest way to travel between Shanghai and Yunnan.

From Shanghai to Kunming, a direct flight takes about 4 hours while a bullet train takes about 12 hours.

From Shanghai to Dali, a direct flight takes about 4 hours.

From Shanghai to Lijiang, a direct flight takes about 4 hours.

From Shanghai to Shangri-La, there are no direct flights or bullet trains.

    Transportation in Shanghai

It is very convenient to travel around Shanghai. The subway, buses, and taxis could take you to almost all of the attractions, including Yu Garden and the Bund, which is especially easy if you are familiar with making mobile payments, such as via Alipay.

    Transportation in Yunnan

Transportation within Yunnan province is also very convenient. Bullet trains between neighboring cities typically take 1–2 hours, such as from Kunming to Dali or from Lijiang to Shangri-La. For cities that are farther apart, direct flights are available.

Most of Yunnan's attractions are natural landscapes located far from city centers, such as Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and the Meili Snow Mountains. While shuttle buses are available, they could be challenging to navigate for those who do not speak Chinese.

For transportation arrangements within Yunnan's cities, we recommend using a professional travel agency that provides transfer services or, even better, opting for a private tour. This approach is hassle-free, offers greater flexibility in scheduling, and ensures a higher-quality experience.

Best Times to Visit Shanghai and Yunnan

For both cities, if you are looking for dry and sunny weather with comfortable temperatures, consider mid-March to May and September to early November.

If your time is flexible, we suggest avoiding the public holidays during these periods, including the first weeks of April, May, and October.

If it's not possible to accommodate both, here are our suggestions:

Consider prioritizing the weather in Yunnan. Since travel in Yunnan is usually longer and focuses on natural scenery, good weather would improve your experience.

Winter in Yunnan, especially from November to December, is also very suitable for travel as it is mild and sunny. The coldest months of January and February are also good choices for experiencing skiing.

And remember, don't worry too much about choosing the best time. If you can't find the ideal match, other times could still be enjoyable with proper preparation.

For example, during the summer, you might face larger crowds but you could book in advance (this is recommended 2–3 months ahead of your visit) and opt for less crowded yet charming spots, such as the Aurora Museum in Shanghai.

This small but exquisite private museum is filled with exhibits that reflect the owner's deep respect for Chinese culture. Additionally, you could enjoy views of the Bund from the top floor.

Budget for a Trip to Yunnan and Shanghai

The daily cost is 200–230 USD per person based on a private tour for two people including flights between Yunnan and Shanghai, flights/trains within Yunnan/Shanghai, 4- or 5-star hotels, lunches, attractions, guides, and private transport.

It is just a reference price. If you would like a price for a tailored itinerary based on your requirements and interests, just contact us.

Myanmar Rebels Claim Regional Military Base in Major Victory

The seizure of the military’s northeastern command post gives the resistance control of a city and airport on a crucial trade corridor to China.

An aerial view of a small city’s colorful houses sprawled over low hills.

    By Vivek Shankar

A rebel army in Myanmar announced this weekend that it had overrun a regional military base near the border with China in what is likely to be the most significant victory yet for a patchwork of resistance groups that have challenged the country’s junta.

On Monday, Myanmar’s military rulers signaled that the insurgents had, in fact, made a major advance, saying the junta had lost contact with the base, the northeastern command in the city of Lashio in Shan State.

The junta leader, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, said in a speech later Monday that security forces had withdrawn in northern Shan State because they were “prioritizing the safety of the people.” He said the rebels were getting weapons and other supplies, including drones and short-range missiles, from “foreign countries,” which he didn’t identify. Some arms and ammunition were coming from factories just across the China-Myanmar border, he said.

“We need to investigate where these factories are getting their funds and technological support from,” the military leader said.

The junta has been on the defensive for months as a broad alliance of rebel militias and pro-democracy groups has made inroads across large swaths of the country. Suffering repeated losses of territory and troops, the junta in recent months has imposed a mandatory draft .

It wasn’t immediately clear how the latest development would ricochet in the wider civil war . But the fall of a regional military headquarters — one of 14 in Myanmar and home to thousands of government soldiers — would be a major defeat for the junta, which has been on a war footing for decades. It would also give the rebels control of Lashio, a strategic city, and its airport.

The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army claimed the victory after weeks of combat. On Saturday, the group’s fighters, who are from the Kokang ethnic Chinese minority, posted photos of themselves at the gates of the base. The group also claimed that it had in its custody three senior officers, all generals from the base.

“Senior officers closely supervised and participated in the fighting until 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, but contact was lost thereafter,” Zaw Min Tun, the military spokesman, said in an announcement on Monday. “Unconfirmed reports indicate that some senior officers have been captured.”

The commander of the base had reportedly fled to China, and the Kokang group said more than 4,000 troops and their families had surrendered. Those claims could not be immediately verified.

It would be a historic loss for the Myanmar military, said Khin Zaw Win, a political analyst and director of the Tampadipa Institute, a think tank in Yangon. He added, “This is a crucial military area for the Myanmar military.”

The city of Lashio and its airport lie on a crucial trade corridor to Yunnan Province in China, which is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a high-speed rail link and other infrastructure projects on both sides of the border.

Beijing expressed support for the Myanmar junta after the country’s coup in February 2021 and has tried to mediate between the junta and the rebels. But analysts believe that the rebel advance in Lashio, as well as earlier offensives in the border region, would not have gone ahead without China’s approval.

“China has little interest in democracy in Myanmar,” Jason Tower, the Myanmar director at the United States Institute of Peace, a nonpartisan research organization, wrote in an analysis last week . He added: “Beijing is also unconcerned about furthering a broader peace: Its so-called mediation efforts center only on manipulating a subset of actors in the conflict to protect Chinese investments and weakening the military’s influence in the strategic borderlands to expand China’s.”

The Myanmar junta is now seeking military assistance from another authoritarian state, Russia. Casting the rebels as terrorists, U Khin Yi, the chairman of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, a junta ally, made the plea to Moscow in an interview with a Russian state-owned news outlet on Sunday .

The resistance now holds roughly 75 cities and towns across Myanmar and two airports, one in Thandwe in Rakhine State in the west, and the other in Lashio.

Last week’s gains in Lashio were symbolic for another reason: The offensive that started last year and is credited with putting the junta on the defensive also began in Shan.
