Recent tour reviews

Wow, what a fantastic evening. I can’t remember the last time I saw a group with so much energy. Lead singer sounded great and his energy never waned. He was jumping from the stage to crowd barrier, going into the crowd and the audience loved it. If you want a great high energy gig to go to this is the one. I would go and see them again tomorrow and I am keeping my fingers crossed that they come back to Nottingham soon.

Its a shame Brett Anderson didnt make the most of his first appearance at the Apollo as he chose to only sing out to one side of the crowd all night leaving everyone else excluded. Even Iggy pop and Nick Jagger in their 70s use every inch of the stage to make their fans feel included. Perhaps the venue was too big for him.

The blue hours a great album. Easy to sing along catchy tunes. Fab performance from Suede who were in a playful mood. Signed my album with doodles of sketches. Brett interacted with the crowd who reached out to get a touch of his hand. It was also a pleasure to meet some of ' the insatiable ones' fan club as they made it fun. Apollo in October here we come!...

Suede announce new album and series of intimate London tour dates

"'Autofiction' is our punk record"

Suede

Suede have announced their return today (May 23) with a new album, ‘Autofiction’.

  • READ MORE: It’s time we recognised the genius of Suede

The band’s ninth studio album is due for release on September 16 via BMG and can be pre-ordered  here .

Suede, made up of Brett Anderson, Mat Osman, Simon Gilbert, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling, went “back to basics” for this new record according to a press statement.

They hired “a rehearsal studio in deserted Kings Cross to collect a key, hump their own gear, set up and start playing,” before recording at London’s Konk studios.

The band have given fans the first taster of the album via new single called ‘She Still Leads Me On’, which Anderson wrote to his late mother.

Later this evening, Suede will debut the brand new single ‘She Still Leads Me On’ live on stage at a headline performance in Belgium at Brussels’ Cirque Royal. Fans can livestream the performance here from 9pm.

Check out the new single here:

  • ’15 Again’
  • ‘The Only Way I Can Love You’

Speaking about ‘Autofiction’, frontman Brett Anderson said: “‘Autofiction’ is our punk record. No whistles and bells. Just the five of us in a room with all the glitches and fuck-ups revealed; the band themselves exposed in all their primal mess… ‘Autofiction ‘ has a natural freshness, it’s where we want to be.”

Bass player Mat Osman added: “When we were rehearsing and writing this record it was this sheer, physical rush. That thing where you’re hanging on for dear life.”

Following the release of their next album, Suede will perform two special intimate shows at London’s Electric Ballroom in October.

Tickets are on sale from May 27 here at with a fan presale beginning May 26. More dates are expected to be announced.

The band recently released a new photojournal called So Young: Suede 1991-1993 .

The journal, which was compiled by Gilbert, documented his arrival in the band in 1991 through to 1993, when the group’s self-titled debut album reached number one.

Speaking about the project at the time, the drummer said: “ So Young is the book that’s been in my head for over 30 years. When I was getting into music I was more interested in seeing bands away from the bright lights of Top Of The Pops . Photos of the Pistols in the pub or The Clash at a checkpoint in Belfast fascinated me, and filled me with visions of what it was actually like to be in a band.”

Britpop Veterans Suede Set to Headline Blastfest

gigs and tours suede

When Suede plays Moscow this Sunday, it will be the legendary Britpop band's first show in Moscow, as well as its last concert ever. Again.

The group is finishing a string of shows following its reunion in 2010 by headlining the second-ever Blastfest music festival at Milk Moscow. Suede originally captured the hearts of British audiences in the early '90s with its combination of intricate guitar work and climbing vocal melodies, becoming a seminal group in the formation of Britpop.

"We're not going to do any new gigs," said bassist Mat Osman, who has also produced music for television and is the editor of the e-mail magazine Le Cool's London version. "We said we'd do the summer doing old songs, but we're not going to do it again."

In fact, Suede was supposed to already be done with its reunion. The band members had promised themselves to not do any more gigs following its summer tour, but made an exception to play Moscow, where the band has never performed despite playing in all other large European capitals several times.

One reason they decided to break their rule was the enthusiastic reaction Osman and Suede vocalist Brett Anderson received during an Anderson solo set at the first Blastfest in 2008.

After the show, "I remember Brett sitting in the dressing room saying, 'We should have come here with Suede,'" Osman said.

Blastfest will see Suede performing for Russian and foreign fans — some of whom are coming from Britain for the final show — alongside two younger British bands and two Moscow groups. The music will continue without interruption, alternating between two stages.

The festival is more vital than ever after the recent Duma elections and the protests they sparked, said organizer Nash Tavkhelidze, whose band Blast will also perform. Musical events such as Blastfest can help Russia become more free and open, Tavkhelidze said.

"If you're listening to proper music, your brains are working right," he explained.

"In our country, it's strange. People are listening to [expletive]," Tavkhelidze added, referring to popular music on Russian television and radio.

The Blastfest organizers have scored a coup by booking the legendary British group. Tavkhelidze named Suede as one of the four main Britpop bands alongside Blur, Oasis and Pulp, calling it even more of a cult band than Blastfest 2008 headliner Supergrass.

Whereas foreign artists like Elton John have previously traveled to Russia to play for enormous fees, Osman said Suede isn't coming to Moscow for a fat paycheck, but rather because of its interest in playing a new destination for the band and "one of the world's great cities."

"It's nice to get paid, but if we wanted to, we could have spent the summer on a massive tour and made a lot of money" in places where organizing a concert is cheaper than in Moscow, Osman said.

For their part, the organizers had to add some of their own money to sponsor funding and hope the festival as a whole will break even, Tavkhelidze said.

The second-biggest band on Sunday's bill is Suede's fellow Londoners S.C.U.M., dreamy rockers with a sound swimming in synths and dance beats whose debut won mention in major music publications. Osman called the band "exactly the kind of thing Britain is doing really well right now," comparing them to another synth-happy British group to recently break, The Horrors.

Suede has also begun writing new music but won't release an album unless the writing process produces "amazing" results, Osman said.

"If we write and it's OK, we'll just stop," he said. "I'll be quite happy for Suede to finish where it's at right now."

"The last album wasn't very good, and if we would have had more guts and integrity at the time, we shouldn't have released it," he added.

But if the band does release a new record, it would likely tour behind it, Osman added, which would mark yet another return to the stage after calling it quits. The band ended its musical activities in 2003, and the 2010 reunion came about only after the band set several ground rules — including an end to touring after the summer and a refusal to play with an orchestra — to avoid common pitfalls.

"I never particularly liked it" when bands reunite, Osman explained.

"Unless you capture the danger of the original band, the passion and energy, then it doesn't really work for me," he said.

Listeners can judge whether Suede has recaptured its original danger when the band takes the stage around 9 p.m. Sunday.

"We're gonna be good," Osman said. "It's up to the audience to make it an amazing show."

Blastfest is on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Milk Moscow, 9 Ulitsa Sergeya Makeyeva. Metro Ulitsa 1905 Goda. Tel. 726-0998, milkclub.ru

George Strait breaks record for largest ticketed concert in US with nearly 111K in attendance

gigs and tours suede

Everything is bigger in Texas. Just ask George Strait .

The country music icon made history with his concert at Kyle Field in College Station on Saturday night, playing to a record-breaking 110,905 fans . The show set the U.S. record for a ticketed concert, previously held by The Grateful Dead with its 1977 concert at Raceway Park in New Jersey.

"We got some Aggies out there? Oh yeah!" Strait said at the concert, per Chron , referencing the Texas A&M University team. "I’m ashamed to say this, but this is my first time to ever be in Kyle Field. Damn! Just invite me back!"

The concert also broke the record for the most attended single event at Kyle Field, even beating the Aggies football team. The record for a football game was set on Oct. 11, 2014, with 110,663 fans in attendance for a Texas A&M 35-20 loss to SEC West rival Ole Miss. Strait also broke his own Texas record on June 7, 2014, when he performed for 104,793 at Arlington's AT&T Stadium.

Strait's current tour has four remaining dates. The next concert is set for June 29 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Among the attendees at Saturday's concert were new Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko and Sen. Ted Cruz . Elko shared a photo of his seats from the venue when asked whether he was taking in a show of another kind: Texas A&M baseball's College World Series opener vs. Florida in Omaha, Nebraska. The game was heavily delayed by weather, causing a conflict for the Aggies coach.

"Enjoying The King at Kyle Field," Elko wrote. "But I’ll be there supporting @AggieBaseball when we’re done."

“The Outsiders” became the essence of a Broadway insider on Sunday as the gritty adaptation of the classic American young adult novel won the Tony Award for best new musical. Sunday night also saw theater history made for women as Broadway directors and score writers. Danya Taymor won a directing award for “The Outsiders.” Then Shaina Taub won for best score, for “Suffs.” “Stereophonic” took home best play, and “Appropriate” best play revival. The musical of “Merrily We Roll Along” also won big, nabbing the revival award as well as trophies for Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff.
