Bahrain travel guide: everything you need to know as the kingdom updates entry rules

Travellers will only need to take one pcr test when flying to the gulf island.

Bahrain is welcoming vaccinated travellers from several destinations with no quarantine, and fewer PCR testing requirements once in the kingdom.

Only an hour's flight from the UAE, the country may be a nice choice for anyone wanting a change of scenery without having to travel too far from home.

Open to citizens and residents as well as travellers from the GCC and those who are eligible for a visa on arrival, the kingdom is also part of a vaccine travel corridor with the UAE. This allows vaccinated passengers to travel between the two countries without the need for quarantine in either destination.

If you're considering taking a trip to the tiny Gulf island in the near future, this guide answers any questions you may have, from the precautionary measures that need to be followed, to the restrictions in place once you arrive.

Who can fly to Bahrain?

Travellers flying to Bahrain must complete an online health declaration and download the BeAware Bahrain app. Photo: Four Seasons

Entry to Bahrain is currently open to Bahraini citizens and residents, GCC citizens and passengers eligible to obtain a visa-on-arrival or an eVisa.

Click here to discover which passport holders qualify for visas on arrival.

Entry is suspended for travellers from red list countries, which includes South Africa, Namibia and Nigeria. Only Bahraini citizens and residents can return from these destinations.

Diplomats, military personnel, airline crew and holders of official, service or UN passports can also fly to Bahrain. All arriving passengers must hold a return ticket and sufficient funds to cover their stay in Bahrain.

Do I need to quarantine in Bahrain?

Cityscape of the hotels, skyscrapers and development along the 'Al Corniche' and the 'Diplomatic Area' of Manama in Bahrain illuminated at night.

Travellers who have not been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will need to quarantine in Bahrain for seven days. This applies to anyone aged 12 years and over and isolation can take place at a private residence, hotel or other places of stay that has been leased or owned by the traveller or a family member.

This also applies to vaccinated travellers who do not have green shield in the BeAware App.

Citizens and residents of the UAE and other GCC countries who can provide proof that they have received the full course of a Covid-19 vaccine through approved applications do not need to quarantine, but must undergo on-arrival Covid-19 testing procedures in Bahrain.

Passengers travelling from other destinations that have recognised vaccine certificates and who are fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 do not need to self-isolate, but must also take a PCR test on arrival.

Currently, certificates issued by GCC countries, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Seychelles and any country from where travellers are eligible for a visa-on-arrival are recognised, provided that the last dose was administered at least 14 days before departure.

Travellers from destinations with vaccine certificates not recognised by the Bahrain government must follow the rules for non-vaccinated travellers, including quarantining for seven days.

Exempted travellers flying to the kingdom from destinations on Bahrain's red list must quarantine for a period of 10 days in an approved hotel or at home, regardless of vaccination status.

What do I need to do before I fly to Bahrain?

All travellers flying to Bahrain must complete a health declaration form before flying. It can also be filled in via the BeAware Bahrain app before arrival.

Tourists who need an online visa must apply and have their application approved before they can fly to the island.

Negative PCR test results are required for anyone flying to Bahrain, regardless of vaccination status. Tests must be taken a maximum of 72 hours before flight departure times. Children under the age of 6 are exempt from testing requirements. Travellers from specific countries may need to take the test 48 before departure, so check the latest requirements with your airline before you fly.

What rules are in place at the airport?

Covid-19 testing is in place at Bahrain airport for all travellers. The fee for this is 12 Bahraini dinars ($31).

Travellers should self-isolate until they receive the results of their on-arrival test.

Previously, vaccinated arrivals were required to take PCR tests on arrival, followed by more tests on the fifth and 10th days of their stay. This requirement has been dropped.

Arriving passengers who do not have exemption from quarantine rules must remain at home or in government-appointed hotel accommodation for seven days.

Another PCR test will be taken on day seven and a negative result will end this quarantine period. Travellers can pay for the tests before arriving via the BeAware Bahrain app. Cash is also accepted, but this may cause delays.

Which airlines are flying to Bahrain?

Several airlines are operating between the UAE and Bahrain.

Emirates flies daily from Dubai to Bahrain and flydubai is also operating flights between the two countries.

From Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways has resumed daily flights to Bahrain and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operates three times per week from the UAE capital to the kingdom.

Air Arabia operates to the country from Sharjah and Gulf Air, the national airline of Bahrain, flies regularly to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

What restrictions are in place in Bahrain?

Bahrain has been on yellow alert status since December. This means that vaccinated and non-vaccinated people can access shops, swimming pools, malls, gyms and restaurants by showing their green shield.

Children under 12 are exempt from these rules.

Hotels are open with social-distancing rules and safety measures in place. In accordance with local health authorities, some restaurant and facility services and hours may also be modified. Face masks are mandatory in all public places.

What do I need to do when flying to the UAE from Bahrain?

Departing travellers need to be at Bahrain International Airport at least three hours before their flight to allow for additional screenings. Access to the terminal is limited to passengers and staff only, and temperature screening is mandatory at entry points and before boarding flights.

Bahrain is on Abu Dhabi's green list of destinations from where travellers can fly without the need for quarantine, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated.

Travellers will need to complete ICA approval online to return to Abu Dhabi and all passengers need a negative PCR test to fly back to the UAE. Those staying in Abu Dhabi must follow the most up-to-date PCR testing requirements for the emirate.

Bahrain: Passengers forced to return failing to comply with new visit visa rules

gulf air visit visa bahrain

As part of efforts to prevent human trafficking and unlawful entry of foreigners into Bahrain, the airport authorities have stepped up measures by enforcing strict rules and norms.

It is learnt that tens of people, who arrived at Bahrain International Airport on visit visa, were forced to return home after failing to adhere to new rules.

Gulf Air earlier circulated a message stressing the new rules, according to which, a visit visa holder must have an globally-accepted credit card or must possess BD50 per day for his/her stay in the Kingdom.

The Kingdom provides tourist visas, which can be obtained online by presenting a bank statement with a minimum account balance of BD300. The visitor should also present return tickets as well as documents of hotel booking.

And people visiting their family members must present a copy of the resident’s CPR along with copies of power/ water bills.

According to sources, there are many fraudulent agents across Africa and South Asian countries including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who “trick on innocent, uneducated clients” into believing that they are buying a job visa having legal authenticity to work under any employer in the Kingdom.

Under the pretext of handing over employment visas “visit visas are sold to many youngsters taking amounts ranging between BD700 and BD1,200 from them”. Social workers say that the majority of victims only realise the fraudulent act after reaching the Kingdom on a visit visa.

“However, after falling victim to the scammers they have no other option other than returning home or continuing their stay in the Kingdom as an illegal resident.” Majority of the victims are unskilled workers.

“Almost all South Asian and African cities are flooded with fake recruitment agents, who offer visit visas in the name of employment visas to innocent unskilled workers, who pay them huge amounts in their currencies. This is operated by a big racket across South Asian cities.”

A Guide to Gulf Air Transit Accommodation

Publication.

Publish Date:

Modified Date:

Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, offers a unique service to its passengers called the Stopover Paid by Carrier (STPC) program. This service aims to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable layover experience for passengers with extended transit times in Bahrain. In this article, we will explore the STPC concept, its benefits, eligibility criteria, and how to apply for this service.

Table of contents

What is a stopover paid by carrier (stpc), what does gulf air stpc provide, general eligibility criteria, monetary eligibility requirements, non-monetary eligibility requirements, what happens if you do not meet the eligibility requirements, what if a customer’s connection is cancelled and/or delayed beyond 7 hours.

Stopover Paid by Carrier (STPC) is a service provided by some airlines to offer passengers with long layovers a complimentary hotel stay, meals, and transportation between the airport and the hotel when the transit is because there are no shorter scheduled flights for your route (i.e., because you are forced to, not because you want to sit in the lounge for an absorbent amount of time). Gulf Air’s STPC program is designed to make your transit experience in Bahrain more enjoyable and hassle-free.

Several other airlines also offer STPC programs for their passengers. Neighbouring Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines have the most prominent ones, with their Qatar Airways Transit Accommodation and Turkish Airlines Stopover in Istanbul programs. You can find a comprehensive list of airlines with stopover programs here .

Gulf Air’s STPC program offers passengers with qualifying layovers the following services:

  • Complimentary hotel accommodation
  • Meals at the hotel
  • Transportation between Bahrain International Airport and the hotel

It is important to note that any additional charges, such as room service or minibar usage, are the responsibility of the passenger.

Eligibility for Gulf Air STPC

To qualify for Gulf Air’s STPC program, passengers must meet the following general eligibility criteria:

  • The transit time in Bahrain must be between 8 and 24 hours
  • Both the inbound and outbound flights must be operated by Gulf Air
  • The passenger must hold a confirmed and ticketed reservation
  • The STPC request must be made at least 72 hours before departure
  • If your purchased ticket value is US450 (ticket fare + carrier imposed charges) or more (one-way and/or return ticket), you will be entitled to a complimentary STPC.
  • If your purchased ticket value is less than US450 (ticket fare + carrier imposed charges) (one-way and/or return), you can book your STPC for a fee of USD80 per Adult and US55 per child (between the ages of 2-12 years old) before departing their originating destination. Infants below the age of 2 years will receive a complimentary stay.
  • Your outbound and inbound flights to Bahrain must be booked on a Gulf Air flight (including Gulf Air Codeshare flights) and operated by Gulf Air.
  • Should there be an available connecting flight within 7 hours out of Bahrain, your entitlement will not be applicable. All passengers choosing a longer connection will have to purchase a stopover product at their own expense.
  • If you are under the age of 16 years and entitled to a Stopover Paid by Carrier (STPC), you must be accompanied by either a parent or a guardian.

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements for Gulf Air’s STPC program, you may still be able to book a stopover product at your own expense.

For passengers travelling between the Indian Sub-continent and the Middle East or vice versa, if the fare value is less than USD450 (ticket fare + carrier imposed charges), they will receive up to two meal vouchers (for connections up to 12 hours). However, passengers can pre-purchase STPC (24 hrs before departure) at their own expense.

gulf air visit visa bahrain

Additional Considerations

All customers, irrespective of booking class, will be entitled to complimentary STPC if their connection is cancelled and/or delayed beyond 7 hours.

What if Bahrain immigration refuses entry to a customer who is entitled to STPC?

If Bahrain immigration refuses entry to a customer who is entitled to STPC, the following provisions will be made:

  • Falcon Gold Customers will be entitled to use the Falcon Lounge and a meal voucher will be provided.
  • All other customers will be provided with a meal voucher or accommodated at the airport transit hotel (subject to availability and eligibility).
  • Customers who have purchased an STPC package and are denied entry, they will either be accommodated at the airport transit hotel or issued a refund.

Gulf Air’s Stopover Paid by Carrier (STPC) program is a valuable service that aims to enhance the layover experience for passengers with extended transit times in Bahrain. By understanding the eligibility criteria and additional considerations, passengers can take advantage of this service and enjoy a more comfortable and enjoyable layover.

Video: Air Europa flight makes emergency landing in Brazil after strong turbulence; 40 injured

Scientists say that clear air turbulence is getting worse because of climate change

Air-Europa

Brasmlia: Dozens of passengers were injured Monday when an Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo hit strong turbulence, prompting an emergency landing in Brazil, the airline and government officials said.

The plane, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with 325 people on board, was diverted in the early morning hours to the airport of Natal in northeast Brazil, where more than a dozen ambulances waited.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

Forty passengers were taken to hospitals and clinics in Natal for treatment of "abrasions and minor traumas," the health secretariat of Brazil's Rio Grande do Norte state told AFP.

Eleven remained hospitalised at the Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel hospital by Monday afternoon.

Among the injured were nationals of Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, Israel, Bolivia and Germany.

Air-Europa1

Air Europa earlier said seven passengers had been treated for "various injuries" while an undisclosed number received medical attention for bruises.

It added a plane was being sent from Madrid to collect the passengers while the stricken Boeing is examined for damage in Natal.

They would first be taken to Recife elsewhere in Brazil, from where they will continue the journey to the Uruguayan capital, the company said.

X user Mariela Jodal, who said she was among the passengers, wrote on the platform that several people were injured in "very strong turbulence," but she was spared "thanks to the seat belt."

Images she posted showed broken ceiling panels, with pipes and wires visible, while one photo showed emergency vehicles with flashing lights waiting on the tarmac in Natal.

A video posted to X from a person who said they were on the flight showed one passenger seemingly stuck above overhead bins, near the Boeing Co. 787-9 Dreamliner's ceiling.

Other images on the platform showed what purported to be a broken seat and ceiling panels on the jet.

In May, a 73-year-old British man died and several other passengers and crew suffered skull, brain and spine injuries when a Singapore Airlines-operated Boeing 777 hit severe turbulence on a flight from London and was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.

A week later, 12 people were injured during turbulence on a Qatar Airways Boeing 787-9 flight from Doha to Ireland .

Climate change

Air safety experts say passengers are often too casual about wearing seatbelts, leaving them at risk if the plane hits unexpected turbulence.

Scientists also say that so-called clear air turbulence, which is invisible to radar, is getting worse because of climate change.

A 2023 study found the annual duration of clear air turbulence increased by 17 percent from 1979 to 2020, with the most severe cases increasing by more than 50 percent.

Monday's incident was the latest drama involving a Boeing plane, as the manufacturer faces intense scrutiny following a near-catastrophic event in January, when a fuselage panel blew out of an Alaska Airlines-operated 737 MAX.

That renewed concerns over the company's safety and manufacturing standards which had been raised following two fatal MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019.

In March, the US aviation giant announced the impending departure of CEO Dave Calhoun .
