Yoshi's Safari

Yoshi's Safari (known as Yoshi's Road Hunting in Japanese) is a video game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993. It is one of the few games to use the Super Scope light gun peripheral, and it is the first of only two dedicated rail shooters in the Super Mario franchise , with the other being Luigi's Mansion Arcade . In Japan, it was released on the same day as Super Mario All-Stars .

In Yoshi's Safari , Mario and Yoshi are requested by Princess Peach to save King Fret and his son, Prince Pine , from King Bowser and his Koopalings , who have invaded the kingdom of Jewelry Land . The Koopalings are equipped with powerful mechs and command legions of minions. Mario rides Yoshi and uses the Super Scope to combat the Koopas.

Story [ edit ]

Mario and Yoshi appearing in Yoshi's Safari

Bowser and the Koopalings attack Jewelry Land and imprison its rulers, King Fret and Prince Pine. They also steal the twelve gems that keep the land stable and the resulting earthquake splits the kingdom into two halves: the Light Realm and the Dark Realm . The gems are distributed amongst Bowser, the Koopalings and four powerful minions, all of whom lord over the many regions of the captured kingdom. Fortunately, Prince Pine is a friend of Princess Peach, who promptly sends Mario and Yoshi to save Jewelry Land; she gives them the Super Scope to aid in their quest.

After defeating the Koopalings in the Light Realm and freeing King Fret, Mario and Yoshi head to the Dark Realm to save Prince Pine from Bowser. At the end of the game, a code for a harder game is given to use at the title screen. This not only changes the colors of the levels, but it also makes the bosses harder and changes the text of the story scenes to say that the events of the story are repeating themselves.

Gameplay [ edit ]

yoshi's safari super famicom

The game is played from the perspective of Mario , who rides on Yoshi's back and must shoot incoming enemies with the Super Scope. Yoshi's head is always visible, and shooting at him causes a loss of health. The Super Scope can fire automatically, which quickly drains power. The RPM of the Super Scope will decrease when its Power Meter is close to empty; when it becomes completely empty, the Scope will continue firing, but only one shot at a time, even if the Fire Button is still held down (signifying that the player needs to release the Fire Button and let it recharge). There are two Fire Flowers in the game, and collecting them increases the amount of time that the Scope can shoot before needing to recharge.

Yoshi's Safari puts some emphasis on platforming, and at times it's imperative to jump (via the Cursor button) in order to avoid some obstacles. Also, there are branching paths that leads to different enemies, mini-bosses or prizes; they always end with the same main road, which leads to a boss. The bosses include the Koopalings , with some of them piloting Mechs; bigger versions of normal enemies (such as a large Magikoopa or the Big Boo ); and Bowser himself, wearing a suit of armor equipped with two Gun-Hands and a devastating energy cannon located in the stomach.

Controls [ edit ]

  • FIRE: Shoots at the screen.
  • CURSOR: Makes Yoshi jump. During boss battles, uses item.
  • PAUSE: Pauses/resumes the game.

While the game is paused, holding CURSOR and repeatedly pressing FIRE twice resets the game back to the title screen.

When selecting 2-Player Mode, and plugging a Super NES Controller into the first control slot, the player with the SNES Controller controls Yoshi's movements, allowing him to move side to side or duck. The player using the Super Scope will only be able to shoot at enemies; they will not be able to make Yoshi jump by pressing CURSOR during this mode.

Characters [ edit ]

Playable [ edit ], non-playable [ edit ], enemies [ edit ], normal enemies [ edit ], mini-bosses [ edit ], bosses [ edit ], levels [ edit ].

While they are all numbered, the levels in each realm can be played in any order, except for Bowser's Castle, which is unlocked after beating levels 8-11. Once all the gems in the Light Realm are collected, the player moves on to the Dark Realm. The player can replay a level in a realm as many times as they want as long as all the gems in that realm are not collected.

Items [ edit ]

Objects [ edit ].

  • Gate : Gates block one of two paths. Shooting one makes it block the other instead. They are used for decided which way to go when the road forks. Oftentimes, this determines what enemies, items, or obstacles are encountered, and sometimes even decides whether the player will battle mini-bosses.
  • Jump board : Jump boards prompt the player to jump over an obstacle such as a pool of water or lava or a pit. Failing to jump for a pool causes small damage for its duration, while failing to jump for a pit (including an ocean) resets Yoshi to shortly before at the cost of three coins.
  • Dash board : Dash boards cause Yoshi to get a brief speed boost in the direction they point, even if it is not the direction he is facing.

Trivia [ edit ].

  • This game is the first time that Princess Toadstool is referred to by her original Japanese name "Princess Peach" in the West, albeit temporarily until it was reintroduced in Super Mario 64 .
  • The Hammer Brothers and Boomerang Brothers present in the game have blue and green armor, respectively, the opposite of how they would eventually be consistently depicted.

Every super mario game, in order.

Universal Studios Hollywood promotes their upcoming Super Mario Bros themed "Super Nintendo World" ... [+] expansion to their theme park on the Universal CityWalk on September 26, 2022 in Universal City, California.

Of all the world’s best-known video game characters, Mario is the most iconic. His early popularity established Nintendo as a dominant market force in video gaming, forcing long-time rival Sega to create Sonic the Hedgehog in response, and countless companies have tried to capture the same magic for over 40 years.

Mario, who debuted as an originally unnamed protagonist in 1981’s arcade hit Donkey Kong , would quickly become the star of his own mainline Super Mario game series, which offered ever-increasingly fun, innovative and exciting adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond—usually rescuing his darling Princess Peach from mortal enemy Bowser in the process.

Nintendo’s flagship platformer became a main staple of every console the company released. Often, Super Mario games are the best titles on their given hardware, revolutionizing the genre with state-of-the-art gameplay, cutting-edge graphics and arguably its most powerful asset: some of the best and most celebrated music in gaming history.

Naturally, Mario’s popularity has seen the mustachioed Italian plumber appear in more games away from the mainline Super Mario series. Many people count the likes of Super Mario Kart , Mario Tennis and even Mario Party as “main” Mario games, but they’re not—take it from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself.

Miyamoto’s vision of the Mario universe doesn’t just separate the story-driven titles from other outliers—it plays into Nintendo’s family-friendly ethos, where baddies aren’t genuinely evil. If anything, Mario and his fellow characters are best friends. In 2012, Miyamoto said he saw the Mario characters like a “troupe of actors.” As such, they’re “performing” plays during, say, Super Mario Galaxy , but enjoying team bonding exercises or generally having fun during Mario Golf , Super Mario Strikers or even crossovers like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games .

Apple iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Release Date Proposed In New Report

Ukraine is determined to flatten khalino air base, situated just 50 miles from the front line of ukraine’s surprise invasion of russia, what time is the 2024 olympics closing ceremony in paris, how many super mario games are there.

There are over 200 games featuring Mario and his fellow characters, including those headlined by Luigi, Donkey Kong, Yoshi or Captain Toad. However, as of 2024, there are 24 mainline Super Mario games, with each Nintendo console getting its own true Super Mario experience.

Since 1985, Super Mario games have been created on the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Switch, DS and 3DS, as well as the iOS and Android mobile platforms. Many have been ports or upgrades of older games—for example, the Super Mario Advance series remade Super Mario Bros. 2 , World , Yoshi’s Island and SMB3 for the GBA—but these aren’t counted as true, mainline Mario games.

Still, three titles in the two-dozen Super Mario games might be considered non-canon, despite being seen as core titles by Nintendo. These include the first Super Mario Maker Maker game, which offers “real” Mario mechanics, but no storyline; Bowser’s Fury , which is only playable with Super Mario 3D World and could therefore be considered downloadable content; and Super Mario Run , which is the sole mainline mobile release, and an auto-runner with little in the way of a story. Still, that’s for you to decide. Let’s take a look at all of them, in order.

Every Mainline Super Mario Game In Order

I’ll run down all 24 mainline Mario games chronologically. There’s a good chance you’ve played most of them and probably heard of them all, but you never know—one might’ve escaped your attention, and you’ll want to check out everything on this list.

1. Super Mario Bros. (1985)

Let’s begin with where it all started. Super Mario Bros. arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985, and set the stage for most Super Mario games to follow: you controlled Mario as he traveled through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool—Princess Peach’s original name—from bad boy Bowser.

Super Mario Bros. introduced many of the Mario universe’s iconic assets, such as question blocks, the palette-swap introduction of Luigi in multiplayer, enemies like Goombas and Koopa Troopas, plus power-ups including the invincibility-granting Starman, size-changing Super Mushroom and projectile-throwing Fire Flower. Then, of course, there was composer Koji Kondo, who penned the first-ever Mario soundtrack—and still works on the franchise to this day.

2. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986)

Released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2 , Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was the true sequel to the original game, available on the Famicom Disk System. It was infamously difficult, combining challenging level designs and tougher obstacles. Nonetheless, the game retained the original mechanics but added poison mushrooms and wind.

It garnered its Lost Levels moniker when it was finally released to the wider international market in 1993 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) through the Super Mario All-Stars compilation. It’s still a fan favorite, especially with the speedrunning community.

3. Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988)

To find its footing in the developing American market, Nintendo created the “true” Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1988 for the NES, adapting Japanese game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic for the U.S. audience. Players could choose between Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad, and each one came with unique abilities.

Super Mario Bros. 2 introduced the ability to pick up and throw objects, plus new characters like Birdo, the Shy Guys and big boss Wart. Its new art style helped develop Mario’s character, but its ending remains divisive: it offers the Dallas moment of the series.

4. Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988)

Arguably one of the best platform games ever made, Super Mario Bros. 3 also arrived in 1988. In it, the Mushroom World is invaded by the Koopalings, Bowser’s seven children (later retconned to his underlings, save for Bowser Jr.). They conquer all seven kingdoms, stealing the king’s magic wand and transforming him into an animal.

Alongside the flight-granting Super Leaf power-up, which allowed Mario to fly, Super Mario Bros. 3 also introduced the celebrated world map, alongside a handful of mini-games on bonus screens.

5. Super Mario Land (1989)

Mario finally landed on the Game Boy in 1989’s Super Mario Land , and it was one of the plumber’s more unique outings. Taking part in Sarasaland—with four areas inspired by China, Bermuda, Easter Island and Egypt—Mario was tasked with rescuing Princess Daisy from the alien Tatanga, even taking to airplanes and submarines to save her.

Daisy didn’t return to the Mario franchise until 2000, when she featured in Mario Tennis . She was never a love interest for Mario; instead, Luigi developed a relationship with her, while Peach considers Daisy her best friend.

6. Super Mario World (1990)

Mario’s debut on the SNES was a big deal: 1990’s Super Mario World introduced Yoshi, Mario’s dinosaur friend, whose friendship was celebrated by LEGO just this year with arguably its best Super Mario set yet .

Buoyed by the power of its new console, Super Mario World expanded on its predecessor’s mechanics, offering a huge, interconnected world complete with power-ups like the Cape Feather, plus some of the sharpest graphics, responsive controls, and best music of the 16-bit era.

7. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992)

Mario finally got his comedy nemesis in his return to the Game Boy. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins dramatically improved the portable platforming experience with a non-linear approach to the world map, and more detailed graphics, but also introduced Wario: a tongue-in-cheek antagonist who’d go on to find righteous fame of his own.

Mario is tasked with reclaiming his palace and wider Mario Land from Wario, but only after defeating six mini-bosses for the Golden Coins. It’s arguably the best Game Boy title ever released, and a huge leap forward for the handheld.

8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (1995)

Positioned as a prequel to Super Mario World , Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island makes Yoshi the main character of this SNES experience, and he must rescue Baby Mario from Kamek and Baby Bowser. It’s a vast departure from everything that came before: The whole experience is hand-drawn, and all the more beautiful because of this approach.

Yoshi finally became a household name, developing his character with his iconic flutter jump and egg-throwing antics. Still, Yoshi’s jump wouldn’t compare to the one the wider franchise would take with its next release.

9. Super Mario 64 (1996)

Let’s not beat around the bush: Super Mario 64 revolutionized gaming, and set an early bar for 3-D platformers, with groundbreaking graphics and open-world exploration. In this killer app for the nascent Nintendo 64, Mario explored Princess Peach’s castle, hopped through paintings ( ba ba ba boh-buh ba! ) to explore levels and collected Power Stars.

Its gameplay mechanics were beyond anything else available at the time; it went above and beyond to invent concepts that continue to be used today, most notably the triple jump. Camera control was dynamic, and every level had a rich theme complemented by the perfect soundtrack. The impact of Super Mario 64 was profound, not just on the gaming industry, but on the gamers who originally enjoyed it—I still vividly remember the moment my best friend defeated Bowser, at my house, on a late-90s summer day. We captured the moment on a disposable camera. He even wrote a long-form poem for English class about collecting all the Power Stars; it was surprisingly good.

10. Super Mario Sunshine (2002)

It might’ve been the long wait, or the fact it was the weirdest entry in the series yet, but Super Mario Sunshine —the 2002 debut and sole mainline outing for Mario on the GameCube—was probably the first game in the series that wasn’t universally loved. Time has been a healer: it now has a cult following among fans.

Super Mario Sunshine introduced the F.L.U.D.D.: a water-spraying device that Mario uses to clean the Isle Delfino, jetpack around the place, and ultimately defeat Shadow Mario. It’s a beautiful, fun and surprisingly challenging game, albeit one that tried to do too much but didn’t finesse enough of its big ideas.

11. New Super Mario Bros. (2006)

New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS was the first 2-D Mario experience for over a decade, and it revitalized the genre by injecting modern graphics and gameplay, without losing that classic feeling. It also introduced power-ups like the Mega Mushroom, plus an excellent multiplayer mode—and it opened the floodgates for a resurgence of 2-D Mario games.

12. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)

In what was the magnum opus for all Mario games to that point, Super Mario Galaxy —the franchise’s debut on the Wii—took Mario to outer space and, with it, other new heights. Its gravity-based gameplay and spherical, tiny-planet stage designs were more inventive than anything that came before it, Mario or not.

Super Mario Galaxy saw players travel across various galaxies, collecting Power Stars to—you’ve guessed it—rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. It drowned in Game of the Year awards, and it’s no surprise; a combination of gorgeous graphics, clever mechanics and a damn fine orchestral soundtrack made it practically unbeatable in its class.

13. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009)

The DS’s New Super Mario Bros. formula jumped to the Wii with the imaginatively titled New Super Mario Bros. Wii , expanding on the reinvigorated formula with a four-player co-op, power-ups including the Propeller Suit and Penguin Suit, and motion controls. It proved the perfect meeting between a casual console and a rapidly growing audience, tapping into the family market like nothing else.

14. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)

Knowing it was on to an excellent thing, Nintendo released its first direct Super Mario sequel in 15 years with Super Mario Galaxy 2 .

It built on its predecessor with even better level designs, additional power-ups like the Drill and Cloud suits, and, like Super Mario World 2 , it threw Yoshi into the mix for good measure. Unsurprisingly, it received universal acclaim, even if many prefer the comparative simplicity of the original.

15. Super Mario 3D Land (2011)

Super Mario 3D Land , on the Nintendo 3DS, combined 2-D and 3-D design elements and mechanics to deliver another fresh take on a tried and tested formula, while also harnessing the handheld’s 3-D capabilities. It also introduced the Propeller Box, Boomerang Flower and Tanooki Suit, which have become series staples.

16. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2012)

Returning to more traditional roots, New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS built on the foundations of a beloved predecessor while also focusing on coin collection–one million coins were hidden throughout the game’s nine worlds. It became the fifth best-selling game on the 3DS thanks to its high-score-led approach, which encouraged re-playability.

17. New Super Mario Bros. U (2012)

Not one to break the habit of a lifetime, Nintendo presumably spent around 25 seconds to come up with the name for New Super Mario Bros. U , which launched on day one alongside the all-new and horrifically underrated Wii U console.

Once again, Princess Peach was held captive by Bowser, Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, who used a massive mechanical arm to fire Mario, Luigi and two Toads as far away from her as possible—and it’s on you to run back and save her. It was the first HD 2-D Mario and introduced power-ups like the Super Acorn, turning you into a flying squirrel, as well as extensive multiplayer modes with the opportunity to use your own Mii. In 2013, as part of the “Year of Luigi” campaign, players could download New Super Luigi U , a sizeable expansion.

18. Super Mario 3D World (2013)

As one of the best Super Mario games ever made, Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U helped set the high bar for 3D Mario experiences, combining celebrated elements and new abilities, such as the Cat Suit, to create what might’ve been the Wii U’s best-ever game—one of few titles that could stand toe-to-toe with Mario Kart 8 .

The game learned from the successes of Super Mario 3D Land , creating adapted and brand-new worlds while still retaining classic Mario gameplay. Levels like Beep Block Skyway, Mount Must Dash Dash , Sprawling Savanna and Champions Road are among the Super Mario series’ best-ever.

As with most other top-tier Wii U games, Super Mario 3D World was eventually re-released for the Switch, where it finally found the audience it deserved—but it always felt more special on the Wii U, GamePad in hand.

19. Super Mario Maker (2015)

Super Mario Maker was the franchise’s final outing on the Wii U, and technically its most inventive—even if many people may rightly question whether it’s a “true” member of the Mario series (Nintendo says so, so for this list, I’ll take the company at its word.

At its core, Super Mario Maker lets you create, share and play custom 2-D Mario levels, offering a massive suite of tools and assets from past Mario games. The easy-to-use level editor and online sharing features made it incredibly popular, with an ever more inventive community creating fun, challenging and downright evil levels that continue to be seized upon by speedrunners.

20. Super Mario Run (2016)

It was only a matter of time before Super Mario found a home on mobiles. Super Mario Run is the Mario game series’ first release on a non-Nintendo platform; it’s an auto-runner where players tap the screen to make Mario jump and perform moves, combining traditional platforming with mobile-friendly controls.

It wasn’t met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. For one, it always requires an internet connection; secondly, it’s initially free but costs $10 to fully unlock—cheap for a Nintendo game, but expensive for an auto-runner in an incredibly saturated market.

21. Super Mario Odyssey (2017)

Super Mario Odyssey is probably the best-ever 3-D Mario game; the fact it’s still a bar-setting title for the Nintendo Switch so many years after its release is a testament to its incredible design, clever mechanics and surprisingly diverse world.

Odyssey outright redefined 3-D Super Mario games with huge, open-world exploration and increasingly surprising mechanics. Mario must—gasp!—rescue Princess Peach from a forced wedding to Bowser. Mario is not alone; he’s joined by Cappy, a sentient hat capable of capturing and controlling objects and enemies—including Goombas, Bullet Bills and even T-Rexes. If you buy anything for the Nintendo Switch, this should be the first game on your list.

22. Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)

Super Mario Maker 2 didn’t just bring a great formula to the Nintendo Switch: it expanded on the original with a crucial story mode. In it, Undodog—originally introduced in Mario Paint , and appearing like a dog with a slice of white bread around its face—accidentally resets Princess Peach’s castle, so Mario, Toadette and a few Toads help rebuild it by collecting coins across 100 Nintendo-created levels.

On top of this, Super Mario Maker 2 ’s core creation station also received more tools (including elements like slopes and on/off switches), themes and features, plus new multiplayer modes. As with its predecessor, the game continues to be remarkably popular with speedrunners and gamers hoping to clear near-impossible courses.

23. Bowser’s Fury (2021)

It took 36 years for the Super Mario game series to drop the phrase “Super Mario” from its title, and maybe it’s a telling sign: many may think Bowser’s Fury isn’t as canon as Nintendo insists it is. This additional game, which isn’t available as a standalone title, was packaged with the Switch re-release of Super Mario 3D World .

That’s not to say it isn’t up to the right standards —Bowser’s Fury delivers a fresh, open-world take on the SM3DW experience, even if you could call it downloadable content. Mario works with Bowser Jr. to calm an angry, dark version of Bowser in the feline-themed Lake Lapcat area, using Cat Shines to help restore Bowser to his usual, Peach-kidnapping self.

24. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)

Last but certainly not least, Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes 2-D Mario games to their modern crescendo, garnering universal acclaim from players and reviewers alike. It introduces the titular Wonder Flowers, drastically altering level dynamics, alongside a new and fun art style.

Wonder is known for its replayability, especially due to its puzzling level designs, which don’t always seem obvious to begin with—ground pounds, big jumps, and ability-infused runs are needed to unlock every little bit of the game.

Bottom Line

Across two dozen titles and over nearly 40 years, the Super Mario series has aged like a fine wine. Unlike rivals like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario has barely misstepped—instead, the series has transformed the genre. Nintendo has set such a high bar that it’s impossible to guess how the next game will raise it further.

History of Sverdlovsk Oblast

The first people settled here in the Stone Age. At the end of the 16th century, the Russian kingdom gained control of the region. In the 17th century, the most significant stage of the initial development of this area happened, when Russian settlers began a massive advance to the east. In 1598, the first settlers founded the town of Verkhoturye on the territory of the present Sverdlovsk region.

Verkhoturye became the first capital of the Urals because of its strategic location on the Babinov road - an important crossroads of trade routes. Sverdlovsk oblast acted as a transshipment base between the central part of the country and the actively developed regions of Siberia and Central Asia.

The presence of strategic reserves of iron and copper ore, as well as large forest areas, predetermined the specialization of the region (ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, wood processing, mining, etc.). Exploration of minerals in the Sverdlovsk region began at the end of the 17th century.

In the 18th century, the Demidov dynasty founded several plants in the region that turned into large production and economic complexes. The local industry was characterized by a high level of technological development. The blast furnaces of the Ekaterinburg, Nevyansk, Tagil iron-making plants were superior in performance to the best European models of that time, and their products were the leading item of Russian exports.

More historical facts…

The launch of the Trans-Siberian Railway became a landmark event in the life of the Middle Urals, allowing large-scale export of plant products. Between 1920 and 1930, the Urals was able to once again take its place as the leading industrial region of Russia by strengthening its mining industry, creating new production facilities, developing energy and mass urban construction.

In the years of the first five-year plans, along with the reconstruction of old enterprises, several new large industrial facilities were opened: Uralmashzavod, Uralelektrotyazhmash, tool and ball bearing plants in Sverdlovsk, Uralvagonzavod and Nizhny Tagil metallurgical plant in Nizhny Tagil, pipe plants in Pervouralsk and Kamensk-Uralsky, copper smelters in Krasnouralsk and Sredneuralsk, the Ural aluminum smelter in Kamensk-Uralsky and others.

On October 3, 1938, the territory of Sverdlovsk Oblast was finally formed. During the Second World War, from July 1941 to December 1942, more than 2 million people came to the Urals region, of which more than 700 thousand stayed in Sverdlovsk Oblast.

In the postwar period, Sverdlovsk Oblast continued to develop as a major industrial center of the Urals. The industry of the region was a supplier of the most important types of machinery, products of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, chemical, electric power, light, and food industries. Mechanical engineering and metalworking retained their leading place in the structure of the local industry.

Being one of the most important industrial and defense centers of the Soviet Union, the Sverdlovsk region remained closed to foreigners until 1991.
