Dead and Company Announce Bill Kreutzmann Won’t Join Them for Final Tour
By Daniel Kreps
Daniel Kreps
Dead and Company announced that founding Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann will not accompany them when they embark on what’s been declared their final tour .
“Every day, things change. After many long discussions and some good old-fashioned soul searching, we are letting you know that our brother Bill Kreutzmann will not be joining us on our final summer tour. Bill wants you to know that he is in good spirits, good health and he is not retiring,” Dead and Company’s Bob Weir, John Mayer, Mickey Hart and Kreutzmann wrote in a joint statement posted Saturday on social media.
“This is the culmination of a shift in creative direction as we keep these songs alive and breathing in ways that we each feel is best to continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead . The final tour will go on as planned with Bill’s full endorsement and support.”

However, Kreutzmann’s exit prior to Dead and Company’s final tour doesn’t appear to be health-related: According to Jambase , Kreutzmann’s other project Billy & The Kids is scheduled to perform shows next week. Kreutzmann’s own website was (and still is) promoting Dead and Company’s 2023 tour, so it’s unclear what sparked the “shift in creative direction.”
Dead and Company’s last hurrah begins May 6 at New Orleans Jazz Fest and continues through the summer before the band hits the end of the road with a three-night stand at their hometown San Francisco’s Oracle Park.

Grateful Dead Drummer Bill Kreutzmann Exits Dead & Company Final Tour
The drummer, a founding member of the legendary rock band, has been jamming for Deadheads since 1964
Dead & Company have announced longtime drummer Bill Kreutzmann, a founding member of The Grateful Dead, will not be joining them on their final tour.
In a post on the bandâs Instagram Saturday, Kreutzmann, along with bandmates Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and John Mayer, said the drummer will sit out their final summer tour.
âEvery day, things change,â the band said. âAfter many long discussions and some good old-fashioned soul searching, we are letting you know that our brother Bill Kreutzmann will not be joining us on our final summer tour.â
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dead & Company (@deadandcompany)
A founding member of The Grateful Dead, Kreutzmann formed the group alongside Weir, Jerry Garcia, Dana Morgan Jr. and Ron McKernan in 1964 when they were initially known as The Warlocks. The drummer has had health issues in the past, though the band made it clear he is not hanging up the sticks for good.
âBill wants you to know that he is in good spirits, good health and he is not retiring,â the band said in the post.
Dead & Company, an offshoot of the original eclectic rock band with a devout following to this day, was formed in 2015, bringing together founding members of the band and weaving in Grammy winner Mayer. According to the post, the decision for Kreutzmann to bow out of their final tour was completely mutual.
âThis is the culmination of a shift in creative direction as we keep these songs alive and breathing in ways that we each feel is best to continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead,â the post read. âThe final tour will go on as planned with Billâs full endorsement and support.â
The bandâs final tour will begin at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in Louisiana on May 6.
Grateful Dead Founder Exits Dead and Company Tour Featuring John Mayer
By Allison Schonter - April 27, 2023 12:37 pm EDT
Drummer Bill Kreutzmann will not be a part of Dead & Company's upcoming final tour. The band – consisting of Kreutzmann, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and John Mayer – announced Saturday that "after many long discussions and some good old-fashioned soul searching, we are letting you know that our brother Bill Kreutzmann will not be joining us on our final summer tour ."
Although Kreutzmann has faced health issues recently, the band confirmed that this was not three reason for the decision. Rather, Kreutzmann stepped back from the band due to a "shift in creative direction" and will continue making music. According to Dead and Company, Kreutzmann "is in good spirits, good health and he is not retiring. This is the culmination of a shift in creative direction as we keep these songs alive and breathing in ways that we each feel is best to continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead." The band added that the "final tour will go on as planned with Bill's full endorsement and support."
Kreutzmann formed The Grateful Dead in 1964 alongside Weir, Jerry Garcia, Dana Morgan Jr., and Ron McKernan. At the time, the group was called The Warlocks. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee went on to help form Dead & Company, an offshoot of the original eclectic rock band, in 2015. The band's final tour is set to kick off in Los Angeles on May 19.

Glad it's not for health reasons , but after 60 years, is there really a need for a "shift in creative direction" now? — Neal Stolowich (@Neal_RealDeal) April 22, 2023
"I don't understand. What creative differences could matter at this point? Were they going to let Mickey do "Fire on the Mountain"? Incorporate "Your Body Is a Wonderland" into a set? Ban Jeff from the B-3? Is this more tempo shit?" asked one fan. "Billy couldn't hang for 2 more months?"
Kreutzmann will be missed

Dead & Company Drummer Bill Kreutzmann Returns for End-of-Tour Run at Citi Field

It’s been a summer tour of twists and turns for Dead & Company, who wrap it up tonight at Citi Field.
Just 10 days ago, the band cancelled a show when John Mayer ’s 94-year-old father had a medical emergency. Richard Mayer is out of the hospital and recovering.
The state of original Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann has been a cause of concern as well. The 76-year-old band co-founder missed six consecutive shows until returning for last night’s Citi Field opener.
“Well, friends, I was hoping to be back in the saddle already, but since I’m not quite there yet, I thought I’d tell you exactly what’s going on,” Kreutzmann commented at Facebook on July 11. “No more speculation or rumors. I’m okay! It’s not my heart. And I’m not retiring! As most of you know, I had a back issue that suddenly appeared in Boulder, but I nipped it in the bud. Just as I was ready to come back full-strength, I pulled a positive on an antigen test. Despite all the tour protocols that I took very seriously, it still got me. Darn it. My case was mild and — thankfully — I’m testing negative again. However my strength isn’t quite back to show level. But it gets closer every day. I miss seeing all of your faces. I haven’t thrown in the towel and I cannot wait for our joyful reunion. I love you all so much.”
After reading the update, fans figured Kreutzmann was done for the tour. It was a classic Merry Prankster dodge. On Tuesday at The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown, PA, his understudy Jay Lane joined the band in their traditional double-drummer set up. A veteran of RatDog, Dead & Co guitarist Bob Weir ’s side group, Lane sat in as he’d done during much of the tour. After the Boulder shows at Folsom Field on June 17-18, Kreutzmann shared the load with Lane, playing some half shows. But by the time the band reached Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the Woodstock site in New York, on July 1, Kreutzmann was on the disabled list.
Popular on Variety
Two weeks later at Citi Field, the home of the Mets in Queens, NY, he was back behind his trap set alongside longtime bandmate Mickey Hart, Kreutzmann’s red cap facing forward, chopping it up on the opener, “Bertha,” a popular track from the 1971 “Grateful Dead” album.
Several songs later, Kreutzmann flipped the cap backwards as the band steered into their funky ode to Deadhead entrepreneurship, “Shakedown Street.” Whenever the camera zeroed in on the red-faced, white-haired drummer, the crowd cheered enthusiastically. It was a recurring theme of the show.
After an intermission break, Dead & Company came back energized as if they’d drank a few Red Bulls to rev up the old engine. Mayer, who for the most part tackles Jerry Garcia’s guitar parts, and Weir alternated vocals as the songs shifted from “Terrapin Station” (the band’s lengthy suite from the 1977 album of the same name) to ’60s gems like “China Cat Sunflower” and “The Other One.” As the show neared its conclusion, during “Standing on the Moon,” from the Dead’s final studio album, 1989’s “Built to Last,” Kreutuzmann acknowledged the fan support, raising his sticks to the crowd in appreciation and evoking another loud cheer.
The pounding of drums on “Not Fade Away,” Dead & Company’s tribal version of the Buddy Holly classic, signaled that Kreutzmann was indeed back. Fans clapped along in time as the song ended and the band cleared the stage. An upbeat encore of “Sugar Magnolia” sent heads home giddily, but not before Hart, the oldest band member on stage at 78, hugged Kreutzmann in a show of brotherhood.

Band hits the road one last time this summer
Dead & Company has revealed that drummer Bill Kreutzmann will not be participating in the band’s final tour. The band shared the news via social media on Saturday (Apr 22nd).
“Every day, things change. After many long discussions and some good old-fashioned soul-searching, we are letting you know that our brother Bill Kreutzmann will not be joining us on our final summer tour. Bill wants you to know that he is in good spirits, good health and he is not retiring,” the band writes. “This is the culmination of a shift in creative direction as we keep these songs alive and breathing in ways that we each feel is best to continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead. The final tour will go on as planned with Billâs full endorsement and support.”
Mickey Hart, John Mayer, Bob Weir, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti will launch Dead & Company’s The Final Tour with back-to-back nights in Los Angeles on May 19th and 20th. Highlights include doubleheaders at Chicago’s Wrigley Field; Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY; Citi Field in New York City; and The Gorge in George, WA. The group also makes an epic return to Fenway Park in Boston, and will also perform their first-ever three-night stand at Boulder’s Folsom Field, among other stops. The trek runs through Friday, July 14th and Saturday, July 15th when the tour ends with a two-night debut at San Francisco’s Oracle Park. The group will perform two sets of music drawing from the Grateful Deadâs historic catalog of songs.
Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Deadâs Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothersâ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. Since its formation, the band has completed six tours, playing to 3.4 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Having toured consistently since its 2015 debut, the band has grossed $255.5 million and sold 2.8 million tickets across 149 reported shows.

Bill Kreutzmann Pulls Out of Dead & Company Final Summer Tour
Today, Dead & Company shared a statement that beloved percussionist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann, will not be joining them on their final tour set to take place this summer.
The band wrote a letter announcing the news on social media that read, “Every day, things change. After many long discussions and some good old-fashioned soul searching, we are letting you know that our brother Bill Kreutzmann will not be joining us on our final summer tour. Bill wants you to know he is in good spirits, good health and he is not retiring.” They went on to write, “This is the culmination of a shift in creative direction as we keep these songs alive and breathing in ways that we each feel is best to continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead. The Final tour will go on as planned with Bill’s full endorsement and support.”
Dead & Company closed the message by expressing their excitement for their upcoming appearance at New Orleans’ Jazz Fest and by saying, “Let the music play the band,” before signing off with Bobby, Billy, Mickey and John.
Upon the final tour’s initial announcement, Kruetzmann shared, âThe Grateful Dead always felt timeless from our very beginnings at the Acid Tests where âtimeâ did some funny things so we left it behind altogether. This music will always exist, always evolve, always be the soundtrack of our ever-changing lives.â He continued, âI have loved this chapter with Dead & Company, as we got to explore The Music with some new interpreters and different antennas, but we always knew it was just a chapter. The Music never stops.â
Kreutzmann’s replacement for the summer tour is yet to be announced. This is a developing story.

Billy & The Kids Add California Shows To ‘Daze Of The Dead’ Halloween Run
Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann has announced a pair of Billy & The Kids Halloween concerts in California to round out his late-2023 Daze of the Dead mini-tour. Kreutzmann and his bandâfeaturing guitarist Tom Hamilton , keyboardist Aron Magner , bassist Reed Mathis , and percussionist Jeff Franca , and stream of rotating guestsâwill perform at Saratoga, CA’s Mountain Winery on Halloween night (10/31) and Santa Barbara, CA’s Santa Barbara Bowl on the Day of the Dead (11/2).
“Why celebrate just one Day of the Dead when you can celebrate the Dead for days?” Kreutzmann asked in a post entitled “PART 2: TREAT,” a follow-up to the “ PART 1: TRICK ” note included in last week’s Capitol Theatre announcement, “Why celebrate just one Day of the Dead when you can celebrate the Dead for days? Four days, to be precise. Four days, to be precise. Four days, three venues, two coasts. In addition to the two Capitol Theater shows (Oct 21, 22) , I’m bringing the spirit holiday to the West Coast!
“California knows how to party and so I’m inviting all of you to my Halloween parties — Halloween night (10/31) will be at the Bay Area’s [Mountain Winery] and on the actual “Day of the Dead” (11/02) we’ll gather at the [Santa Barbara Bowl] to raise the Dead,” he added. “Please feel free to dress in costume (if you’re so inclined).
“For all of these shows,” Kreutzmann’s announcement continued, “we will honor the Dead by being very much alive. Because when we dance, we are all together, we are all one. And, together, we are the very spirit of the Grateful Dead.”
Artist pre-sale tickets for the Billy & The Kids Halloween in Saratoga, CA (10/31) and Day of the Dead show Santa Barbara, CA (11/2) will go on sale on Wednesday, September 13th at 10:00 a.m. using the password “Treat”. Remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, September 13th at 12:00 p.m. ET.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
