Libya Tours

Join one of our tours in libya.

From world-class Roman ruins to mystical caravan cities built in staggering, massive deserts, Libya is a real off-the-beaten-track country filled with wonderful sites that have been barely explored by travelers.

In 2011, however, a series of peaceful protests against dictator Gaddafi escalated into a civil war that isolated the country even more from the rest of the world.

Since 2021, however, the situation in the west of the country has improved, and that’s why Against the Compass decided to start running tours in Libya.

Our Libya tours focus on the highlights the country is famous for but also, we are the only travel company that puts a strong focus on the political part, the crisis, and the unfortunate war, key elements to understand the Libya of the 21st century.

Sample itinerary for our Libya tours

Here’s the standard 7-day tour we offer on most of our expeditions.

Day 1 – Arrival in Tripoli

  • We will meet early morning at Tunis Carthage International Airport (exact time to be confirmed) to catch our flight to Tripoli all together.
  • After going through the lengthy immigration process, we will check in at the hotel and go for a hearty, Libyan meal.
  • Then, we will visit the old city of Tripoli, checking out highlights like: The Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Gurgi Mosque, Al Nakah Mosque, the gold bazaar, Martyr’s square, and a lot of Italian colonial buildings.
  • After a particularly long day, you can spend the evening/night in either the hotel (it has an excellent rooftop with great views) or check Tripoli’s nightlife.
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 2 – Leptis Magna (overnight in Misrata)

  • Two hours east of Tripoli, you find Leptis Magna.
  • Founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians and later expanded by Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, the ruins of Leptis Magna are absolutely outstanding, first league Roman ruins built on the shore of the Mediterranean.
  • We will take our time to visit the site – around 3 hours – followed by a good Libyan meal. Then, we will head for Misrata.
  • Evening and overnight in Misrata.

Day 3 – Misrata

  • Misrata is not a tourist destination, there isn’t much to do and it lacks historical sites but, while the city of Tripoli remains quite untouched from the civil war, Misrata witnessed the fiercest battle between the rebels and Gaddafi’s forces.
  • Our visit to Misrata is going to be political, a visit that is going to be key to understanding a conflict which has been going for the last 10 years.
  • We will do a proper city tour and then we will visit a brand-new Civil War Museum containing a collection of objects, photos, and weapons from the 2011 battle.
  • Lunch in Misrata. Then, we will head back to Tripoli.

Day 4 – Jebel Nefusa (overnight in Ghadames)

  • On day 4, we will drive to Ghadames, which is a long 600-kilometer ride, but we will break the journey by visiting several highlights along the way, in the area of Jebel Nefusa.
  • Berbers compose around 5% of the total Libyan population and Jebel Nafusa is their heartland. As you may know, Berbers are the indigenous ethnic group in North Africa before the Arabs came. You may have met some Berbers in Morocco, Algeria, or Tunisia but I found Libyan Berbers to have a stronger identity since their flag is flown all across their region.
  • On the way to Ghadames, we will visit Qasr al-Hajj, one of the finest examples of Berber architecture, a giant granary from the 12th century.
  • Then, we will go to Tarmisah, an ancient village with stunning views of the valley.
  • We will have lunch in a traditional cave.
  • After lunch, we will continue to Ghadames.

Day 5 – Ghadames

  • In the morning, we will go straight to the Old City of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a giant Saharan city composed of hundreds of entangled lanes, packed with mosques and historical houses.
  • We will have lunch in a traditional house and then, we will get deep into the desert, climbing the sand dunes from where you can see the Algerian border.
  • A group of real Tuaregs will make us tea while waiting for the sunset.
  • Overnight in Ghadames.

Day 6 – Gharyan and back to Tripoli

  • There’s going to be a long ride ahead of us, but we are going to stop in an area named Gharyan, famous for pottery and also for some very authentic troglodyte caves.
  • We will have some snacks along the way, but the main meal will be in Tripoli.

Day 7 – Sabratha and departure

  • Sabratha is smaller than Leptis Magna, but most travelers prefer Sabratha because you can see the Mediterranean from anywhere in the ruins, plus it features the best Roman theater.
  • On the other hand, Sabratha was also taken by ISIS, the heritage of which can still be seen in some of the damaged buildings.
  • After visiting Sabratha, only if we have time, we will check out some of Libya’s finest beaches, made of white sand and the most crystaline water ever.
  • Around 1pm, we will head back to Tripoli, have a quick lunch and go to the airport to catch our 5pm flight.
  • The tour finishes upon arrival in Tunis .

Join a tour in Libya: FAQ

4 to 8 weeks before the beginning of the trip, we will apply for a Letter of Invitation (LOI), which takes between 1 and 2 weeks to process.

With this LOI, you’ll be able to pick up your visa in the Libyan Embassy, either in your home country or country of residence.

Some embassies require your physical presence, while others allow you to mail your docs.

We can offer you guidance, assistance, and tips but at the end of the day, applying for your visa at the embassy is your own responsibility.

Which nationalities can join?

Today, all nationalities are welcome to join our Libya tours.

How to get to Libya?

There are direct flights to Tripoli from Tunis, Istanbul and Cairo, Tunis being the main hub for flights to Libya.

Check Tunis Air, Turkish Airlines and Libyan Wings.

We only run expeditions to areas we believe are safe but be aware that most Governments advise against all travel to Libya.

From a local perspective, the situation in western Libya has improved a lot – that’s why we run tours there – but be aware that you will be traveling under your own responsibility.

Do you recommend a specific travel insurance?

Either you are joining one of our trips, or you are traveling by yourself, you might want to look for proper travel insurance. Against the Compass has been a partner with IATI for several years already, recommending it to all readers, as well as covering all Joan Torres’ personal trips.

We like it because It covers all the countries where the FCDO advises against all travel, it offers budget plans and covers all sorts of adventure activities.

Against the Compass readers can benefit from a 5% discount .

Libya Tours and Travels – 2024 and 2025

Guided tours to the former libyan arab jamahiriya.

Young Pioneer Tours are now offering fully guided and security-conscious Libya tours for 2024 and 2025 at regular intervals.

Tours to Libya have been a particular interest of YPT for years and as the situation has slightly stabilised since the fall of Gaddafi and the Second Libyan Civil War our travel partners in Tripoli have deemed it relatively safe for tours to resume to the State of Libya, formerly known as the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya during the Colonel Gaddafi era .

Libya Tours – Group Tours to Libya

For safety and security reasons, our group tours to Libya are led by both a YPT guide, a local expert guide and police officers from the Ministry of Tourism.

We are in constant communication with our local partners in Tripoli and deem whether the group tour or private group tour is safe to go ahead or not depending on the local security situation on the ground.

Libya Tour: Gaddafi’s Legacy   February 25th – March 1st 2025 – €1795

Libya Tour: Gaddafi’s Legacy  – November 12th – 16th 2024 – €1795

Below are two sample private tour options.

4 nights, 5 days: Tripoli, Sabratha, Jebel Nafusa, and Leptis Magna 6 nights, 7 days: Tripoli, Ghadames, Sabratha, Jebel Nafusa, and Leptis Magna

Libya Tour Itinerary – 4 nights, 5 days

Day 1 – Tripoli

  • Arrive at your convenience into Tripoli – the capital city of Libya which have regular connections from Tunis, Istanbul, and elsewhere in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
  • YPT can arrange your flights with Libyan Wings departing Tunis at 9:20am and arriving at Tripoli 11:30am – optional cost.
  • Arrival and transfer will be arranged for you from the airport to your hotel centrally located in the city
  • Depending on the time you arrive, lunch can be arranged at a nearby restaurant to the hotel.
  • You’ll first explore around Martyrs’ Square – previously known as Independence Square under Gaddafi, built by the Italians during the colonial rule, on the evening of the 21 st  August the Libyan rebel groups took control of the area during the 2011 Battle of Tripoli and started referring to it as Martyrs’ Square to dissociate the square from the Gaddafi government.
  • Visit Jamal Abdul Nasser Mosque – it was first constructed as a cathedral in the 1920s during the Italian Libya colonial era, and converted into a mosque during the 1970s under Gaddafi’s instructions.
  • See the former Italian built post office which is now converted to the Municipality of Tripoli and a nearby outdoor cafe with a stunning courtyard.
  • Visit Tripoli’s WWII cemetery – here contains 1,369 Commonwealth burials, and 133 unknown soldiers. There’s an old Christian church nearby too.
  • Stop by the Tripoli International Fair – founded in 1927 and is considered to be the oldest trade fair in Africa. The so-called Fiera Internazionale di Tripoli was one of the main international fairs in the colonial world and in the 1930s was internationally promoted alongside the Tripoli Grand Prix as a showcase of Italian Libya.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight in Tripoli

Day 2 – Tripoli – Sabratha – Tripoli

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Begin by exploring the Red Castle of Tripoli – the most famous landmark of the city. It dates back to the Phoenicians; the fort was later painted red after the Spanish invasions in 1510. The total area is about 13,000 square meters and there are several buildings and courtyards inside the castle’s walls. You’ll also be shown the exact spot where Gaddafi stood to give public speeches to the crowds on Green Square.
  • Wander through Medina, where the old city’s labyrinthine streets are filled with treasures such as the Banco di Roma building, Ottoman-era mansions, an ancient Roman arch, and among other more contemporary Tripoli attractions.
  • Visit the Othman Clock Tower – this 19th century Ottoman Clock Tower which shares a resemblance of to the Dolmabahce Clock Tower in Istanbul
  • Drop by the Karamanli house – built in the second half of the 18th century, during the reign of Ali Pasha Karamanli, and was used by Yousuf Pasha until his death. The house was restored during the early 1990s and became known as Tripoli Historical Exhibition.
  • Arch of Marcus Aurelius – built in 163 AD, the triumphal arch of Marcus Aurelius is Tripoli’s most impressive ancient monument. It stands at the intersection of the Cardo and Decumanus and marks the exact centre of the Roman city.
  • Explore many of the souqs that are hidden in old town – these souqs were previously a connection between the trans-Sahara trading routes within Tripoli vilayet and southern European Merchants ships.
  • This will be your chance to buy some unique souvenirs, such as local handicrafts, as well as things related to the former Gaddafi regime, such as the Green Book and various propaganda.
  • Visit the Old British Consulate – originally built in 1744 as a residence for Ahmad al Karamanli, the ruler of Tripoli. He donated it to the British Consulate, and it continued to serve that function until 1940. Since the 1990s it has housed a scientific library.
  • Lunch in Tripoli and begin making our way towards 2 hours northwest to Sabratha – one of the most important historical sites in Libya. The city dates back to 500BC and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Phoenicians and Romans previously used Sabratha as a seaport.
  • Visit the Sabratha Theatre – dated back to 175CE and could hold up to 5,000 spectators.
  • Return to Tripoli for a traditional Libyan feast for dinner.
  • Overnight in Tripoli

Day 3 – Tripoli – Jebel Nafusa – Gharyan – Tripoli

  • Drive 2 and a half hours southwest of Tripoli to Jebel Nafusa – this mountain rises abruptly from the desert of Jefara to a height of over 968 meters. This is the heartland of the Berber people of Libya.
  • Meet and greet with a local family and be invited into their centuries-old troglodyte home.
  • Drive onwards to explore Tarmeisa – an ancient stone village which clings off a narrow rocky outcrop overlooking a spectacular view of the Sahel Al Jefara.
  • Stop by a makeshift Victory monument – leftover tanks from 2011 have been used to make a monument to honour the uprising.
  • Arrive in Gharyan and lunch in town
  • Gharyan was considered the centre of Libyan resistance against the Italian invasion in the early 20th century. The locals here protested strongly against Gaddafi where they suffered heavy bombardment by the Gaddafi forces. As of May 2011, the Gaddafi’s forces had shut down the water system and blocked food supply to the town. Rebels stood their ground and continued fighting against any resistance which finally led them to victory against countless tanks, artillery guns and snipers.
  • Today Gharyan has a population of over 85,000 and produces olive oil, flour, carpet weaving, and pottery. The locally famous Troglodyte caves were dug vertically down into the rocky ground.
  • Visit the 12th century fortified granary of Qasr al-Haj – an impressive place to explore.
  • Return to Tripoli with dinner on arrival
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 4 – Tripoli  –  Leptis Magna  –  Tripoli

  • Drive two hours east to Leptis Magna – it was originally a Phoenician trading port and prospered for over 1000 years before the Vandal invasions and sandstorms brought its downfall. During the reign of Libyan Emperor Septimius Severus, it was second only to Rome with a population of over 100,000. The city remained buried for some 1300 years and it was not until the 1920s when a major excavation by Italian and Libyan archaeologists revealed the limestone and marble traces you’ll explore.
  • You’ll visit various parts of the former glory city such as the Grand Arch entrance, saunas and baths, a track ‘n field, markets, the famous Ampitheatre that could sit up to 10,000 spectators, and what YPT considers the most impressive colosseum you’ll ever come across built along the sea with hidden tunnels to completely discover. Gladiators battling panthers, and public executions took place in this very spot.
  • Lunch at a local Libyan restaurant.
  • Return to Tripoli stopping at Villa Sileen which belonged to an ancient wealthy Roman family.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant in the city where you will get a chance to converse with our local guide over shisha about what life in Libya is actually like since the call of Gaddafi, and what it was like before.

Day 5 -Tripoli and departure

  • Breakfast in the hotel, check out of hotel and transfer to Tripoli International Airport depending on your flight out.
  • YPT can arrange your Libyan Wings flight departing at 8:10am arriving back into Tunis at 8:20am.

What to Expect

Leptis Magna is 100km south east of the capital Tripoli and is located on the country’s Mediterranean coastline. Leptis is the largest Roman city in Libya and its artifacts and remains are amongst the best preserved and most complete in the region; it further has the added benefit of not being as over-populated as some other Roman constituencies found in North Africa and Southern Europe. Leptis is believed to have been discovered as early as 7BC by the Phoenicians and eventually formed a part of the new Roman province in Africa that had taken control in 23BC.

Sabratha, just 65km west of the capital Tripoli, is one of Libya’s greatest Roman cities and extensively documents the rich elite dwellings of Roman North Africa. The Sabratha Museum is a classic tribute to this era with its stunning collection of colourful mosaics being one of the facility’s most prominent features.

Libya is an ancient crossroads of civilizations that bequeathed to the Libyan coast some of the finest Roman and Greek ruins in existence, among them Leptis Magna, Cyrene and Sabratha. Libya also has some of the most beautiful corners of the Sahara Desert, from seas of sand the size of Switzerland and sheltering palm-fringed lakes (the Ubari Sand Sea) to remote massifs adorned with prehistoric rock art (the Jebel Acacus), labyrinthine caravan towns (Ghadames) and an isolated black-as-black volcano (Wawa al-Namus) in the desert's heart.

This country has some incredible sights to offer, especially the Roman Cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna, but it remains one of the least visited countries for tourism.

Tourism was limited during the time of Gaddafi, but after the Arab Spring in 2011, it has been paralyzed by the ongoing conflict.

How to visit Libya? Here are a few points to consider first :

Table of Contents

Libya and “Do Not Travel Warning”

First of all, almost every government has a warning in place to not visit Libya.

This means in most cases your travel insurance will be invalid and your embassy won’t be able to assist you on the ground in case of emergency.

The ongoing conflict in Libya and the instability of the government means Libya is really only suitable for experienced travellers.

Why go to Libya?

Libya has 5 UNESCO Heritage sights, Mediterranean coastlines, Berber villages, and unique desert landscapes.

Tripoli is the capital city and feels more like a mixture of Turkey and the Middle East cities .

And   Libya also has some great food .

How to visit Libya granary

Do you need a visa for Libya?

Passports and visas are required to enter Libya for all nationalities except nationals of Algeria, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey.

As Libya does not currently issue a tourist visa , the only option is to apply for a business visa.

If you are maybe working in the construction industry, oil and gas, or are a diplomat, you might be able to visit Libya for work and add a few days to your itinerary to see some sights.

However, if you are planning a trip to Libya as a tourist, you will still need to get your business visa, and for that, you need the help of an agency.

In order to apply for a Libyan visa, you will require an invitation letter from Libya, and this is something the company takes care of on the ground.

It usually takes about 5-7  business days for the invitation letter to be issued and it will also be sent to the embassy where you will apply for your Libyan visa.

There are only a few Libyan Embassies, so best to check where you would apply.

Some suggestions include Rome, London, Washington, Canberra, or Dubai.

Here is the full  list of Libyan embassies.

Libya travel guide

Travel to Libya is ill-advised at the moment due to the ongoing civil war. And that’s a shame, because this beautiful land has much to offer the intrepid traveller.

One of the largest countries in African, Libya boasts a stunning Mediterranean coastline, gorgeous desert landscapes and no fewer than seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These ancient sites are a reminder that Libya’s history has always been tumultuous: before Gaddafi’s regime and the ensuing civil war, the country endured Greek, Roman and Italian rule.

But Libya has more to offer than war stories. From the mystical desert town of Ghadames to the stunning Sahara Desert, this is a land of empty beaches, ancient mountain trails and shimmering oases. It is a land where sand dunes stretch to the heavens, palm trees reflect in desert lakes and prehistoric rock carvings decorate the dramatic Akakus Mountains.

Rural Libya is characterised by neatly cultivated olive groves, fat lemons dangling from trees and remote Berber settlements. In the cities, merchants sell wares in rose-scented souks, flogging silver, spices, henna, hijabs and Tuareg scarves. The smell of spicy lentil soup and Benghazi seafood hangs deliciously in the air.

The population of Libya is mostly of Arab and Berber descent. Berbers make up about 10% of inhabitants and live in more remote areas. The rest of the population lives largely in coastal cities like Tripoli and Benghazi, although recent fighting has forced many to flee.

Libyan hospitality is legendary and its people love showing travellers around. But tourism faltered after the Arab Spring and has been paralyzed by the ensuing Civil War. At the time of writing, tourist visas were not being issued and most tour companies have closed their doors – many guides now work as fixers for war reporters instead.

It’s impossible to say how current events will pan out, but, like many travellers, we hope the doors to Libya will swing open again soon.

Travel Advice

Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

FCDO advises against all travel to Libya

FCDO has advised against all travel to Libya since 2014. The local security situation is fragile and can quickly deteriorate, with intense fighting starting without warning. Any travel to, from or within Libya is at your own risk. If you are a British national in Libya, we strongly advise you to consider leaving.

UK government support

UK government support is severely limited in Libya. The British Embassy in Tripoli does not provide support to British people who need help. If you are in Libya and need urgent help from the UK government (for example, if you’ve been attacked, arrested or someone has died) contact the British Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia , on +216 71 108 700 or  contact us online .

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance . Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.

About FCDO travel advice

FCDO provides advice about risks of travel to help British nationals make informed decisions. Find out more about FCDO travel advice .

Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram . You can also sign up to get email notifications when this travel advice is updated.

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK who choose to travel against FCDO advice. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Libya set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Libyan Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Libya.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Libya, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Previous travel to Israel

If your passport shows previous travel to Israel, it will not be accepted for travel to Libya.

Visa requirements

If you choose to travel to Libya against  FCDO  advice, ensure you have the right visa or you may be refused entry. Contact the Libyan Embassy in London for further information on the visa you require. You may require a specific type of visa depending on the nature of your trip.

A Libyan visa issued overseas may not be recognised in some areas or at certain ports of entry, due to the current political situation.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Libya guide .

Registering with the police

All short-stay visitors must register with the police within a week of arrival. The company you’re visiting or the local travel agency you’re using will usually arrange this. If you do not register, you could get a fine when you leave the country.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Libya . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into or out of Libya

If you enter or leave Libya with over 10,000 US dollars-worth of cash, you must declare it to the customs authorities. If you do not, you risk having the money confiscated and even being detained.

There is a severe shortage of cash in Libya, and the Libyan Central Bank has imposed restrictions on cash withdrawals throughout the country.

Libya is a cash-based society. You cannot use bank cards at banks, ATMs or hotels.

The exchange of foreign currency into Libyan dinar is tightly controlled by the Libyan Central Bank. Accessing Libyan dinar through formal methods is difficult for travellers. You can legally use exchange offices approved by the Central Bank, but they operate at black market rates. No bank will change money. Informal methods of currency exchange exist though their use carries the risk of arrest.

It is illegal to take dinar out of Libya.

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Libya

Terrorists are very likely to try and carry out attacks in Libya.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. British people and nationals of other western countries are considered high-value hostages. Government buildings and security checkpoints have also been targeted in recent years, leading to deaths.

Extremist groups including Daesh in Libya (formerly referred to as ISIL) are responsible for most attacks, which have targeted:

  • foreign and diplomatic personnel and premises
  • international hotels
  • oil installations
  • government and other official security institutions

In 2021 Daesh claimed responsibility for 2 separate bomb attacks on Libyan security forces in the Fezzan province in southern Libya. These attacks killed at least 4 people.

While there is a greater concentration of terrorist groups in the Fezzan Province, it is highly likely smaller numbers of terrorists can move relatively freely to other towns and regions to facilitate activity outside of the Fezzan Province.

In the north of Libya, it is likely security pressure and violence between armed groups have helped to limit the movement of terrorist groups.

It is likely both Daesh and Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb ( AQIM ) are using the Fezzan region in south-west Libya as a base for operations such as people-smuggling and illegally transporting weapons. These resources are essential to support terrorist activity in West Africa.

The risk of terrorism may be higher if you travel in the border regions. Extremist groups operating in the region, including AQIM and Daesh, conduct operations in the border areas of northern Mali, Niger and Algeria. They have a proven capability of travelling long distances to carry out attacks, including in neighbouring countries and Libya.

Terrorist kidnap

Terrorist groups including Daesh, Al-Qaida and their affiliates routinely use kidnapping as a tactic and can conduct kidnapping across borders. Terrorist groups within Libya have both intent and capability to carry out further kidnappings. It’s a realistic possibility that they will target foreign nationals. Criminal gangs also carry out kidnappings, and there is a realistic possibility that they would sell hostages on to terrorist groups. Foreign nationals have been kidnapped in Libya in the past, including 4 foreign nationals in south-east Libya in 2018.

It is likely that any kidnap for ransom attempt by a terrorist group in Libya would occur in the south of the country, whereas a kidnap for ransom by militias would occur in a northern coastal city.

There is a realistic possibility that a terrorist group, most likely Daesh-Libya or Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, will kidnap a western national in Libya. In recent months, the importance of oil and natural gas production in Libya has increased, and any western nationals working for oil and natural gas companies in Libya are highly likely viewed as high-value targets.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government is to not make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners builds the capability of terrorist groups and finances their activities. This can, in turn, increase the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Political situation

The political situation in Libya is fragile and the security situation remains dangerous and unpredictable.

There is a UN-facilitated ceasefire in place between eastern and western armed forces. The risk of renewed fighting between them has decreased, but there is still a high risk of localised violence between competing armed groups.

Violence between armed groups can break out with little warning. In 2022, clashes between armed groups in Tripoli killed 32 people and injured over 150. Clashes again broke out in August 2023 in central Tripoli, resulting in temporary roadblocks and Mitiga Airport closure. Tensions have since calmed, with roads now open and no further disruption to air travel from Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport.

Foreign forces and mercenaries continue to operate in Libya. The Interim Government of National Unity has limited control of security provision across the country. The lack of political stability has led to security incidents, road and airport closures, and oil blockades.

There have been protests throughout Libya against the continued political deadlock, lack of basic service provision and corruption.

If you choose to travel to Libya against  FCDO  advice, you should:

  • monitor the local security situation carefully
  • remain vigilant
  • have robust security arrangements and contingency plans in place

Public infrastructure and services

Basic services across Libya vary. Petrol can be difficult to access and there are regularly long queues at fuel stations. There can also be power outages in Tripoli and the south and east, particularly in the summer months.

Crime is widespread across Libya and violent robbery, carjacking and smuggling of fuel, drugs, weapons and people are common across the country. Armed groups and local security services regularly carry out operations against criminal gangs.

Protecting your belongings

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. Foreign nationals may be a target for criminals operating in Libya. Be cautious when travelling throughout the country, particularly at night. You should:

  • consider your route
  • vary daily routines
  • hide expensive looking items which could draw unwanted attention

British people have been detained by Libya’s intelligence services or armed groups. You are at higher risk of detention if you work:

  • in private security
  • as a journalist

If intelligence services or armed groups detain you in Libya, your health and welfare may be put at serious risk, especially if you have an existing medical condition. The British Embassy will have extremely limited capability to help you or intervene on your behalf. Any help will be even more limited for dual nationals of Libyan origin as you will be in your home country and dual nationality is not recognised by the Libyan authorities.

Laws and cultural differences

Personal id.

By law you must carry your passport. Foreign nationals have been arrested for failing to provide the correct documentation when requested.

Libya is an Islamic country. Always respect local traditions, laws and religious customs, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan dates vary by year and country. Ramadan next year is expected to start in March 2025.

During this time do not:

  • eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car
  • play loud music or dance
  • swear in public

Get more advice when you arrive from your hotel or business contacts.

You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware that fasting can cause tiredness, particularly during the later afternoon and early evening
  • be patient and show tolerance

It is illegal in Libya to make any attempt to convert Muslims to another religion.

Alcohol and drugs laws

It is illegal in Libya to drink alcohol or use drugs. Libyan authorities treat drug and alcohol offences seriously. You can be punished for use, possession and trafficking of drugs or alcohol.

Business travel in Libya

There are often complex bureaucratic procedures needed to travel for work in Libya. Follow all relevant protocols and procedures if you intend to travel around Libya for business. You are likely to be at risk of intimidation, harassment and detention if you fail to comply with local customs.

Journalism in Libya

You must get press accreditation from the relevant government authorities. This may reduce the risk of harassment, intimidation and detention by armed groups and Libya’s intelligence services. There is a real risk of hostility from those who object to media reporting. International and local journalists have previously been detained in Libya.

Using cameras near military facilities

You must get permission before taking any photographs or interviewing at or near military facilities.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Libya. Libyan society is intolerant of same-sex couples showing affection in public.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Transport risks

Road travel.

Road travel within Libya remains highly dangerous. There is a risk of being caught up in outbreaks of localised violence between armed groups. There is a high risk of:

  • striking unexploded bombs or mines off-road

The risk is very high on the coastal road between Zawiyah and Tripoli.

All land borders into Libya are subject to closure at short notice.

If the security situation worsens, routes in and out of major cities and towns may be blocked and airports closed or made inaccessible at little or no notice.

Do not share your travel or other plans through social media. Vary your travel routes and always keep a low profile.

Road traffic accidents are common and often result in deaths. The emergency response to a road traffic accident may be limited.

Flights to and from all airports in Libya are at risk of cancellation at short notice.

Tripoli International Airport has been closed since 2014, following clashes between armed groups in the area surrounding the airport. Other airports may change their flight schedule without notice. Mitiga Airport is Tripoli’s only currently functioning civilian airport. Fighting between armed groups in the area caused Mitiga Airport to temporarily close in 2023.

The UK Air Safety List (ASL) lists all known airlines in Libya that do not meet international safety standards and are banned from operating commercial air services to, from, and within the UK. Check the UK Air Safety List when considering which airlines to fly with. The list is maintained by the Department for Transport, based on advice from the UK Civil Aviation Authority .

Extreme weather and natural disasters

Storm damage in eastern libya.

In September 2023 Storm Daniel struck eastern Libya, causing severe flooding and significantly damaging critical infrastructure, including hospitals and telecommunications networks.

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 1415 and ask for an ambulance.

Medical help in remote areas may not be available. Even if your travel or insurance company has arrangements with an international air ambulance provider, they may not be allowed to carry out a rescue operation within Libya. The current status of Libyan rescue services is uncertain.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Libya
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Libya , including:

  • leishmaniasis
  • Rift Valley fever
  • West Nile virus
  • schistosomiasis

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

The NHS has information on whether you can take your medicine abroad .

Healthcare in Libya

Healthcare in Libya is generally below the standard available in the UK. There are acute shortages of skilled personnel and medical supplies, particularly for chronic conditions such as diabetes. There are private clinics in Tripoli.

If you need treatment you may be evacuated to Malta or mainland Europe. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) cannot provide tailored advice for individual trips. Read this travel advice and carry out your own research before deciding whether to travel.

Emergency services in Libya

Telephone: 1415 (ambulance, fire, police)

Contact your travel provider and insurer

Contact your travel provider and your insurer if you are involved in a serious incident or emergency abroad. They will tell you if they can help and what you need to do.

Refunds and changes to travel

For refunds or changes to travel, contact your travel provider. You may also be able to make a claim through insurance. However, insurers usually require you to talk to your travel provider first.

Find out more about changing or cancelling travel plans , including:

  • where to get advice if you are in a dispute with a provider

BEYOND THE PATH ADVENTURE

Libya – the jewel of North Africa – 7 days

history, culture, sightseeing

We would like to invite you to an exceptional trip to Libya which used to be completely inaccessible for tourists until not so long ago.

Because of the political situation, trips to such magnificent places as the ruins of the ancient towns of Leptis Magna and Sabrata were impossible in the past few years. During our expedition we will also visit Tripoli – we will see its Christian district as well as buildings from the Ottoman period and colonial times.

DAY 1 | Tunis – Tripoli

An organisational meeting in the capital of Tunisia – Tunis – at the international airport. Flight to Tripoli. After arrival and visa formalities, transfer to the hotel. An afternoon or evening visit to the capital of Libya, depending on the time of our arrival.

DAY 2 | Qasr Al-Hajj – Nalut – Ghadames

After breakfast, we will leave Tripoli and go west, to the Jabal Nafusa region inhabited mainly by Berbers. To start with, we will stop in Qasr Al-Hajj, which is a unique granary which was also a fortress where the local community could take shelter. It is an exceptional example of a combination of defensive architecture with commercial one. Then we will go to Nalut where we will visit a similar fortified castle-granary but situated in a completely different scenery, on a steep hillside. In the afternoon or early in the evening we should reach Ghadames – a town called “the jewel of Sahara”. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in view of its extraordinary architecture and history. We will stay in the local hotel for two nights.

DAY 3 |Ghadames – Grand Erg Oriental – Ras al-Ghoul

From the morning, we will be able to admire the magnificent architecture of Ghadames during a walking tour. We will have an opportunity to get lost in the labyrinth of small streets that are suddenly closed by small squares, historical mosques and madrasas. We will see ancient aqueducts and observe people at one of the oldest bazaars in northern Africa. We plan to go for lunch to a traditional house, which will give us a chance to taste the regional cuisine. In the afternoon, we will set off to Ras al-Ghoul, i.e. “the Mountain of Ghosts”. Those are the remains of Roman fortifications. Then we will drive to Grand Erg Oriental where we will have an opportunity to see marvellous picturesque landscapes of northern Sahara. It is a place where borders of Libya, Algeria and Tunisia converge. We will stay there until sunset and then return to Ghadames.

DAY 4 | Ghadames – Kabaw – Gharyan – Tripoli

After breakfast, we will set off for our return journey to Tripoli. En route we will stop in Jabal Nafusa where we will visit Qasr at Kabaw – fortifications whose origins date back to the beginning of civilisation and settlements in North Africa. Next we will drive to a small village of Tormisa where we will see a magnificent panorama of this area from a cliff on which the village is situated. While returning to Tripoli, we will also stop in Gharyan where we will see traditional houses and we will visit workshops of real masters of pottery art, which were mentioned also in Roman chronicles. In the evening, we will arrive in Tripoli. Dinner and night rest at the hotel.

DAY 5 | Leptis Magna

After breakfast, we will set off to a whole-day trip to the ruins of the ancient city of Leptis Magna. They are among the best preserved remains of Roman architecture outside Europe. We will also visit buildings erected in later Byzantine times, such as bathhouses, an amphitheatre and ancient city walls with gates. On our way back to Tripoli, we will visit the remains of Villa Silene that used to belong to a rich Roman family. In the evening, depending on the time of our arrival, we will go for a walk to the Tripoli districts with preserved buildings dating back to the 19th century, to the colonial era. Dinner and night rest in Tripoli.

DAY 6 |Sabrata

After breakfast, we drive to the east of Tripoli to visit the Sabrata ruins. It is an exceptional place where remains of Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine buildings and structures can be seen. We will end our visit by walking through the remains of the first early Christian churches. In the afternoon, return to Tripoli. We will visit what we were unable to see on previous days. Dinner and night rest in Tripoli.

DAY 7 |Tripoli – Tunis

After breakfast, we will visit a second world war cemetery where also Polish soldiers are buried. We will go for a stroll to the Christian district where we will explore the labyrinth of narrow and tortuous streets. One of the highlights of this day will be a visit under the triumphal arch erected for the Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the second century AD. Dinner and night rest at the hotel. There will be time for some final shopping. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport and flight to Tunis.

Practical information

Tour description.

  • the length of the tour : 7 days in Libya;
  • start of the trip: Tunis – Tunisia ;
  • end of the trip: Tunis – Tunisia;
  • the highlights of this expedition The biggest attraction of the tour will be the visit in Tripoli and in the ruins of the ancient cities of Leptis Magna and Sabrata. The heritage sites found there – dating back mainly to the period of Roman and Byzantine Empires – are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. During our tour, we will go the western part of the country – to the town of Ghadames famous for its unique architecture. Then we will have an opportunity to meet Libyans living in this region. In fact, one of the trip highlights will be the possibility to meet the inhabitants of Libya which slowly emerges from the nightmare of civil war and many years of dictatorship that preceded it.

Because of the special nature of the visited places and of the expedition features, the travellers should be able to walk unassisted and participate in short hikes to vantage points. However, they are not physically strenuous. Accommodation is planned in hotels. As means of transport we will use passenger cars or off-road vehicles. We designed our itinerary so as to enable the travellers the best possible viewing of the places away from mass tourism routes, while meeting safety standards and ensuring comfort.

Depending on the political situation, the length of the tour and the order of visited places may change. In a situation of a serious threat to travellers’ safety, the tour may be cancelled. We will keep you updated as to whether the expedition is possible.

Visas and documents

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the planned end of the tour.

Before departure, you must obtain a Libyan visa. Currently, only business visas are issued. The cost of the invitation necessary for obtaining a visa is included in the trip price, but visa procedures in the embassy competent for the place of residence are not.

Since flights to Tripoli are only available via Tunis, you must check if you do not have to additionally obtain the Tunisian visa. For most citizens of the UK and UE there is no such obligation.

Furthermore, you should take with you for the trip a photocopy of your passport (the photo page) and an additional ID document.

Health and vaccination

  • Before departure, we recommend a consultation with a family physician and a tropical medicine specialist.
  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended but an infection is rather unlikely because of the climate, the trip dates and the itinerary of the planned tour.
  • Vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, viral hepatitis A and B and typhus is recommended.
  • There is a risk of tuberculosis.
  • We recommend visiting https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries .
  • During our expedition, we will drink only bottled water. You should avoid ice in your beverages and eating raw or undercooked foods.
  • At the visited places, only private healthcare exists (a visit cost is approximately USD 50).
  • Because of difficult travelling and accommodation conditions and particularities of the country, good general health is necessary. Please take with you a first aid kit and a sufficient supply of your regular (prescription) medicines, if any. Some useful contents of the first aid kit:
  • Tunisia and Tunis are relatively safe for tourists. The biggest threat is common crime – pickpocketing.
  • Despite the recently ended civil war, Libya – Tripoli and its surroundings – is a relatively safe country, when the appropriate security measures and common sense are used. In the event of a serious threat to safety, the trip can be cancelled or shortened or its itinerary can be changed so as to enable its safe conduct.
  • Despite the difficult situation, expeditions to Tripoli and its nearby archaeological sites are possible and conducted with the adequate precautions.
  • Owing to the good relations we have with local contractors, we keep following the news to be aware of any potential threats and safety risks. We also recommend you to read the latest news on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website:

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice .

During the tour, please take seriously the instructions of our contractors, guides and the tour leader.

It is very important to respect local customs and abide by local laws, and detailed information about them will be presented as necessary by local guides and the tour leader.

It is strictly prohibited to take photos and make video recordings at military and police installations and at airports and around them. You are also not allowed to take photos where people in military/police uniforms are present!!!

Photographing people is possible only when they expressly agree to it. Taking pictures when the subjects have not allowed it may often cause their aggressive behaviours.

The legal tender in Libya is Libyan dinar. In Tunisia, the legal tender is Tunisian dinar. Currency exchange is possible only at the airport and in street bureaux de change in Tunis and Tripoli. Using payment cards is not always possible, especially in Libya. The best foreign exchange rate is for euros and US dollars. It is important that USD banknotes should be printed after 2006.

For current foreign exchange rates see www.xe.com or install xe.com on your phone.

The inhabitants of Tunisia and Libya speak mainly in Arabic. For self-guided tours, you must speak basic English or hire a local guide with a command of English.

Customs, culture, religion

Tunis and Tripoli are predominantly inhabited by Sunni Islam believers. Moreover, Christians of different Eastern rites of the Church live there. Women do not have to wear headscarves. The inhabitants of Tunis and Tripoli have a very liberal attitude to religious principles.

It is very important to respect local customs and abide by local laws. You will receive the relevant information from your local guide or the tour leader.

Temperatures depend on the time of year and dates of the expedition. In months in which expeditions to Libya are planned, temperatures in Tunis and Tripoli during the day oscillate between +25 and +10ºC. At night, they range from +10ºC to +5ºC. In desert regions – Gadamis, especially in December, temperatures can drop to 0ºC at night. Rainfalls may occur occasionally. Dusting and potential sandstorms may sometimes prove problematic.

For detailed information see https://www.meteoblue.com/en .

Communication, Wi-Fi, electricity

Mobile network coverage is available in most towns and villages. Purchase of a local SIM-card is possible, although probably not sensible with such a short trip. Wi-Fi is available at the hotels where we will stay. Before the trip, it is worth contacting your mobile network operator to find out whether they have a contract signed with operators in Tunisia and Libya and what the prices of call and SMS roaming are. To avoid a nasty surprise and a high telephone bill after return to your home country, we recommend disabling mobile data usage before arrival.

  • Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and restaurants.
  • Power sockets in Libya: types C, E, D, L, F. Voltage: 127 V or 230V , frequency 50 Hz.
  • Power sockets in Tunisia: types C, E. Voltage: 230 V, frequency 50 Hz.
  • Additionally, we recommend taking a capacious power bank.

Useful equipment

For climatic and cultural reasons, loose garments will be most appropriate: long trousers, long skirts, long-sleeved shirts, which can be easily washed and will quickly dry. The most comfortable footwear for the tour will be lightweight boots. Palladium brand boots are recommended. Wearing open sandals is possible. Light hiking boots may prove useful.

The following are worth taking:

  • aluminium sleeping pad or light self-inflating mat and thin summer sleeping bag; we provide a mattress during the trip but taking your own pad or mat will improve your sleeping comfort
  • sachet for documents and money
  • lightweight sleeping bag
  • wet wipes for body cleaning and antibacterial gels
  • polar fleece jacket or warmer blouse, especially useful at evening and night times in northern areas of Libya
  • head cover and sunglasses – mandatory, the sun is no joke!
  • comfortable summer clothes, useful during practically the whole trip
  • light T-shirts/shirts
  • useful odds and ends: torch, Swiss Army knife, sewing kit (usually is not needed but is not heavy and does not take much place), chargers, mug (for special occasions); inflatable neck pillow, useful on the plane and during car rides; small wallet for the local currency; books to pass the time on flights and car rides

Price: £ 2590 p/p

According to the program, two international  flights are planned:

  • Tunis – Tripoli,
  • Tripoli – Tunis,

During the expedition, we will travel by minibuses and off-road vehicles. Depending on the daily agenda in the itinerary and the current situation as regards traveller safety, we will spend 4 to 10 hours travelling every day.The speed and transfer times depend on the road surface conditions, terrain characteristics and number and length of stops.

Accomodation

We are not able to guarantee a uniform accommodation standard at each of the planned sites during the stay in Libya. Our priorities are your comfort, safety and appropriate location. We always place emphasis on the support of local community when selecting the sites for our accommodation. In general, rooms will be assigned on the assumption of two people sharing a twin room (rooms with individual bathrooms). The surcharges for single rooms are quoted in the “Price” section.

Our priorities are your comfort, safety and appropriate location. Overnight stays planned during the tour will take place in hotels corresponding to the 4-star standard in Tripoli and 3-star standard in Ghadames.

Meals are included in the tour price, as specified in the itinerary. B – breakfast, L – lunch, D – dinner. Breakfasts will usually be offered in hotels. We will go for lunches and dinners to local restaurants. The Turkmenistan cuisine is varied, similarly as the culture and history of this exceptional country.

A great slab of dusty desert land carved out of the North African Maghreb, Libya conceals vast oil reserves beneath its arid hinterland. Unfortunately, political instability has rocked the country since the popular uprisings of the Arab Spring in 2011, when dictator Muammar Gaddafi was finally toppled from power after more than 40 years at the helm. Today, the nation is still embroiled in factional conflicts aplenty, barring travelers from the wild beauties and human relics that exist here between the Med and the half-baked Sahara. When the great swathes of sandy land that form the heartland of Libya do finally open up again, visitors can expect to explore the three cities of Roman Tripolis; Leptis Magna that was raised by the Romans close to Al Khums, the old port city of Sabratha, and the 2,600-year old Greek settlement of Cyrene, set between the green slopes of Shahhat on the fringes of the Mediterranean Sea. Libya tour guides will tell you there is so much more, as they lead you through the labyrinthine streets of Ghadames, help you decipher the rock art at Tadart Acacus and show off the arabesque majesty of the great Red Castle in Tripoli, where mosque minarets soar high and sprawling souks issue the scents of spices and earthy couscous dishes alike.
