During our RV downsizing journey, we looked at quite a few small travel trailers. The number one requirement was the travel trailer had to be lightweight. This is a round up of some of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 3500 lbs.

I have thought about adding a small trailer on either the back of my van or pickup truck (van is shorter than truck). Not sure how to maneuverer van or truck with going into a gas station or backing up. Also ability to see trailer behind vehicle. Looking forward to watching your series.

Just watch your video on shopping for a small travel trailer, I have many of the same “wants”. We’ve been traveling with a F650gs and two electric mountain bikes for about ten years. Right now we have a 2020 E-Pro 19th with tons of mods. It servers as both the garage and the camper. It has off road suspension with air bags, modified to provide side to side leveling. It’s over your GVW 3500 lb limit by about 1.5k but without the bikes and the moto it’s just over your limit. We currently pull it with a 1/2 ton silverado, but I’m thinking of changing to a transit 250. The van would become the garage. Feel free to email me if you’d like to discuss the mods I did and to kick around ideas for the best solution to bring along the bike.

Thanks Paul but 3500 pounds GVWR is a hard limit for us – and that weight would include everything that’s going in it. There are a number of trailers we’ve seen that are in the 2000 pound range that meet all our requirements.

I’m trying a somewhat newer idea of converting a Toyota Sienna Mini van into a camper, still leaving the 2 front seats for my daily driving. Any advice out there? Mom of “amanavanacat” 😄

amazing videos thanks for sharing

Any plans to update this list for 2020/21 ?

Yes. Do you have a small travel trailer suggestion?

You may want to check out the Helio brand super-lightweight full fibreglass trailers. They are Canadian built and are sold by a few dealers in the US. I really like the O2 model as it has a decent-sized wet bath and digs the use of space. I’ve seen them for $18,999 in the US and they weight 1600 or so pounds!

Love you guys… Looking to upgrade our homemade utility trailer Turtle… currently no bath porta potty, do have salamander wood burning stove water etc…But thoughts on a 4 season, smaller trailer with real bath, love the murphy bed idea and a sitting area rather than a dinette is fine, husband is a big guy and just struggles getting in and out of those dinettes… Looking for off grid read, ample storage etc… Thoughts on Lance trailer vs No Boundries. One thing I noticed when comparing small campers lately:

Teardrop (not sure of the brand/model, but it was quite attractive to the eye – I only saw it at a campground and then very quickly in a dealer showroom): This had only a bed in the cabin, a low ceiling, and a kitchen in the back. I don’t like the kitchen in the rear, because that would make it tough in the rain, especially with high winds, and unpleasant in the winter. These seemed pretty expensive for what little you get, and it’s nice to be able to stand up in a camper. Easy to pull, though.

Prolite has some nice layouts and some lightweight units, although their ceiling are too low. I have heard that the construction is very basic, and may not last as long as others, especially the molded fiberglass units like Scamps and Casitas.

Aliner/Chalet. These seem very roomy once they are opened, and opening them is very easy – they can be literally be opened and be fully set up in a minute or two if you don’t want to disconnect one from your car. The high center ceiling makes them feel very big, even though they taper to a lower level at the ends. They feel very solid and sturdy – sturdier than most lightweight trailers, and sturdier than many bigger RV’s. They’re low when they travel, so they are easy to pull. Downside is that you do have to pop them up, even though it’s quick, and more significantly, the downsides are that interior storage above waist level is limited, and there are moving parts, so they will wear out or need repair.

Tent Trailer: These old standbys have a lot going for them, especially for those without much towing power or those on a limited budget. They are easy to find in the $1500 to $3000 range used (be careful to look hard if you buy one to make sure there’s nothing wrong with it). They give you more living space per dollar and per pulling pound than any of the hard side trailers. Many like the tent enclosure, because you can hear nature, which is why we go camping (although people can hear you, which gives little privacy). The downsides are that set up is more complicated – they do have to be detached from the car, so they are not good for one night stays, storage is limited unless you get a large model, they have moving parts, and the moving parts are built to be lightweight, rather than sturdy, so they break more easily and need more repairs. Still, they are quite comfortable once set up.

My husband and I are looking for a small camper trailer in which you can stand up inside with an outdoor kitchen. I’ve found Rockwood Geo Pro G125RK, Tigermoth, Luna and TAB. Ultimately we wanted a basic indoor bathroom as well but that seems to be above our budget so we’re considering an outdoor potty with a privacy tent. Can you suggest any others I might have missed in my research?

We haven’t paid much attention to the smaller trailers where you would have an outdoor kitchen so I don’t believe we can be much help there.

Hi, My wife and I are retired and have thought to sell our quite compact fiberglass trailer in a few months. It does have a marvelous outdoor kitchen a large comfortable bed, and an indoor shower, toilet and sink. it is called a “Genesis 912”. It is undergoing some nice upgrading of the solar, etc and I could send some pics if you are not in a rush to buy. I understand this may not work ,timewise ,for you but I though I would let you know about these models anyway. best to you , Doug Johnson

Hi Doug. I’d be interested in looking at some pics. Where are you located?

check out the MeerKat

I am not sure if you have found a Teadrop Camper yet, but Rustic Trail Teardrops builds a 6-foot tall teardrop with an optional outside pull out kitchen. It weighs under 1,7000 Lbs and costs under $12,000. You can find it at http://www.rustictrailteardrops.com/polar-bear/

Nice trailer recommendations. By the way, may I know what towing parts you think is great to use with it? I’m still undecided what to purchase but I’m currently looking at Blue Ox towing hitch.

Excellent work and Well worth a read. Got great insights and information from your blog. Thanks.

My wife and I decided to enter the tiny trailer scene with a “tall” teardrop trailer, one we can stand in. Obviously, we don’t have all the bells and whistles inside, but that’s pretty much the point of owning a tiny trailer. We have kind of a crush on the Airstream Basecamp, though. It’s small yet has that classy classic look. I’m enjoying your blog and how you’ve developed a good energy with it. I did write a blog article that focused on what maybe you’d call the micro trailer niche, where I interviewed tiny trailer owners as to why they went ultra small. https://www.greengoddessglamping.com/2018/08/why-such-tiny-trailer-teardrop-owners.html

Missing Escapade campers made in Minnesota

What do you know about “T@B”’s?

You should check out the Egg Camper. They’re made in Michigan, just outside of Grand Rapids. Unibody fiberglass construction, engineered by a former boat manufacturer. When we camped at an RV park, the gentleman next to us had one. I was commenting how cute the trailer looked from the outside with its yellow awning, it really looked like an egg! He let us take a look inside. It was so well-thought out on the interior. Easy to clean boat quality fiberglass. The bed was east-west, instead of north-south to save on space. Wet bath was roomy. Just the cutest little camper. Only 1,700 lbs dry weight. You can tow it with an SUV. He’s had the Egg Camper since 2014 and absolutely loves it.

What about the Bowlus Road Chief?

You left a number of great trailers off of your list, including the A-Scape (by A-Liner), the “Lil Snoozy,” the Runaway, the Lil Guy, the Travel Lite Express 14, The R-Pod…and more that are targeted for your age, wealth (or lack of it) and skill level.

Why no mention of the Nu-camp 320 series or the 400? They all fall within the targeted weight range and, by the looks of these other campers, are equally, or better, constructed. The problem with most of these trailers mentioned here is availability. I live in the Panhandle region of Florida and you are lucky to find anything beyond the behemoths that people seem to want in this area with the possibility of a few T@Bs. I am very interested in the Alto, but the price of one combined with the costs of traveling expense (are they only sold in Canada?) makes it way out of my league. I wouldn’t even know where to travel to see some of your other suggestions, certainly not within 500 miles of me. The Lance looks interesting, but judging by the video, the build quality doesn’t seem up to the T@B. I currently own the 320 s and tow it easily with a Toyota 4Runner. You can configure it for a North/South bed arrangement or an East/West. A 320 s is well below the 2,000 lb. mark. If I ever get the money together, I would trade the 320 s in for a T@B 400. Having owned a Nu-camp Cirrus truck camper before downsizing to the 320 s, I have been made very familiar with it’s components used in the 400, as the Cirrus had the same construction, windows, flooring, Alde heating system, and the nifty fold down sink in the bathroom. I wish campers like the Aldo were more accessible, as the videos of them frustrate me knowing they just aren’t available for me to even look at in person.

The build quality of the Lance should not even be questioned by someone who obviously has not done their homework! I will leave it at that…

I bought an Alto…it completely rocks! I get that it sucks they don’t have a dealer here in the US– but Safari Condo is happy to connect interested people with the nearest Alto owner so folks can see it before they buy it. Alto owners are always happy to gush about their snails. Happy Shopping!!

I am fortunate to live within 5 miles of the Canadian border (Washington state), so British Columbia is pretty darn close to me. A few days ago I went to visit a Canadian RV dealer that had the Alto Safari Condo line available to view (strictly as display models), and I was very impressed with with I saw and was able to see, touch, feel, and sit in. High quality construction, excellent fit and finish, and thoughtful touches throughout. It has the most comfortable camper dinette seats I have ever sat down upon, and the sofa area that converts to a queen size bed is also very comfortable for this hard mattress loving guy. You don’t feel confined in the Alto … plenty of room for one/two, plus a child (or dog, like me). The Alto is nicest thing I have seen so far, and fits nicely into the weight and hitch weight restrictions imposed on me by my tow vehicle.

In comparing the two models, I preferred the fixed roof version. For me, the extendable roof would let in too much morning light, and you don’t get as much over counter storage, either. In fact, if you selected the microwave option, its placement is on a four-legged pedestal on the counter; that was kind of weird to me.

Lead times are incredibly long; I was told if I wanted to order one, my expected delivery date would be February, 202o. It would be container shipped from Quebec (where they are manufactured), and sent to the Canadian RV dealer. Base price on the Alto 1743 (fixed roof) is $36,300 CDN (dollar references hereinafter are all CDN). To that you have to add freight charges of $4,500, dealer prep of $750, and a US export charge of $750.

Then comes the (long) option list, which includes things like the TV/DVD player, wiring for cable, a central privacy curtain, microwave oven, etc., etc. Depending upon what you select, you can significantly add to the overall cost.

I was fortunate to meet a Canadian owner visiting our area, who was parked along the beach last weekend. He thoroughly loves his trailer, and mentioned that he and his wife use it about 50 days/year. They indicated it’s primarily a two season trailer, but in my area of the Pacific Northwest, I could probably get away with a usable season of Mar 31 – Oct. 31. With the options and configuration he selected (including freight), he paid $56,000 CDN for his unit. Converting that to US dollars equates to approx. $41,000 … kinda pricey. Even the base model – with no additions – is going to put your initial investment at about $31,500 USD.

So far, the Alto is at the top of my list, but I am also looking at T@B (320 series – 400 hitch weight is too much for my tow vehicle), and the Little Guy series, as well.

If you can’t find a local US Alto Safari Condo owner to pester for a peek, many of the Canadian dealers have them as display models. If you ever get yourself close to Canada, it would be worth the visit. Then again, there are enthusiast groups in the US, too … along with a Facebook group.

Love the videos, especially the Alto review.

We own a Tesla Model X and are looking at the best option for towing. We are looking to rent an Alto 1713 like your relatives have. We haven’t been able to find any here in Florida. Any recommendations?

Contact Safari Condo, maker of the Alto, and they can put you in contact with owners in your area. There is also a Facebook group that you can follow. We bought an Alto. There is a wait involved, and a road trip to pick it up. We used the wait to time exchange rates to leverage our payments and make them go further, and the road trip was an excellent opportunity to get to know our new little camper. The Facebook group has all sorts of great recommendations on how to do it.

Can you please share the Facebook group name?

There are Alto owners who tow with a Tesla. AFAIK the only place to rent one is in Durango CO.

What would you recommend for a middle age couple (both about 5’7″) and two young labradors? I want to use my Mercedes 2006 ML350 4Matic (gas) to tow. We’ve always gone tent camping & love BLM land. It would be great to have a shower capability & possibly Heat/AC so we could go in the winter too. Thank you, Fred & Gladys (really)

Hey guys – because RV/trailers are such a personal choice, we don’t make recommendations to people. Our advice is to go shop around and see as many as you can. Eventually one will stand out above the rest. I also have no idea what the tow capacity is for your Mercedes so make sure you research that and take it into consideration (with the trailer fully loaded, water, gas, etc.).

We’re in the same boat Elyse. The GLK 250 diesel, 2 adults and 2 dogs.

My husband and I have a 16 foot Casita spirit. 1970 pounds. We travel with 3 dogs. We love the design- no wasted space. Shower, toilet, fridge, sink. Room for a microwave. TV is wall mounted on a swivel.

Are there any lightweight (<3,500lb) travel trailers that don't require the people to crawl over each other when getting into or out of bed? I don't mind crawling in or out. But when the bed is oriented across the trailer, someone is going to have to crawl over their bed mate. Getting up in the middle of the night to pee? Tough luck. Why don't customers call out the manufacturers for turning a blind eye to this inconvenience?

Yes…we found this one but didn’t like the quality of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pncnTv8Pg7Q The big reason why most manufacturers do have a North/South bed is because of how small these trailers are. Having the bed up against the wall is the best use of space, rather than needing an area to walk around each side.

The R model altos sleep in the bumper to tongue orientation on a king size bed. Getting in and out is even easier if you sleep with only one cushion at the top and leave it in twin bed configuration at the bottom. A very versatile little trailer.

We have a T@B travel trailer, a little over 2000 pounds, 15 feet long including the tongue. The dinette makes up into a large bed but a number of owners have made modifications so there are two single beds with a walkway between. I wish manufacturers would recognize that lots of people would like this configuration in a small camper.

Great summary of options under 3500 lbs. Now that we only have one kid living at home we have gotten rid of our HUGE SUV and daydream of camping in something that our Wrangler and Crossover can tow. Thanks for the links, have a feeling the yard work is going to have to wait!

My wife and I looked at all of the trailers mentioned plus many more and wound up with a Vistabule. Hands down the most space-optimized package we found, incredibly efficient and at 1600lbs very easy to tow. I definitely recommend adding it to the list!

This is my favorite for aesthetics. http://www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/recreational-vehicles/clc-teardrop-trailer.html My 6’3″ husband tells me I can build it for when I want to run away and go solo. I am so happy to see you guys downsized. Your old RV seemed very “grandma in Florida” whereas the new one is more “young people hitting the trail”. Your final step will be when you start modding out an off road truck with camper shell!!!

Thanks Cathy! That’s quite the tiny trailer. Just find a friend who’s taking their RV camping and hook that up to it! Funny, we’ve actually talked about looking at putting together a truck camper for our next rig.

We built a teardrop a number of years ago, designed by my engineer husband. We were able to pick up period reproduction hardware from a local enthusiast who had purchased the extrusion molds- lots of fun, easy to tow. Our daughter & he are going to refinish it & she will be using it with her Subaru.

We bought a Gulfstream Vista cruiser 17 RWD a year ago and love it. We have a Honda Ridgeline V6 to pull it. The trailer is lightweight and we get up hills very easily. Best of all the quality of the trailer is high, much like the Lance trailers.

That’s fantastic – always great to find something that really works for you and is high quality.

  • Pingback: Lance Camper Factory Tour - Travel Trailers, Truck Campers

In July, 2015 we purchased our very first RV – a Scamp 19 ft. “fifth wheel.” Because of its ball-type hitch which is sort of a cross between a goose-neck and fifth wheel hitch, purists frown upon calling it a fifth wheel. But, considering its interior layout, those familiar with RV’s would surely consider it to be a fifth wheel. We absolutely love ours. It’s light (under 3,000 pounds), easy to tow, has a wet bath (though somewhat cramped), an ample dinette area and plenty of storage. With over 45 nights in it thus far, we find it to be plenty spacious for two people – especially the bed area (just huge the way we have it set up). However, when the time to take off full timing comes in two years, we will be upgrading to something larger, likely a smaller Class A. Good luck with your new rig!

We’ve seen a couple of those Scamps – back when we lived in a sticks and bricks, one of our neighbors had one. Makes me wish I had kept my truck! I’ll be curious to see what you think if you end up moving to a Class A or something similar. Thanks Peter!

First, off is the Adaptive System, designed to allow quick and easy configuration of the camper’s interior.

This is due to the modular floor with grooves embedded right into the floor. These grooves hold the Adaptive cube component, which includes bench cubes, countertop cubes, cushion cubes, kitchenette cubes,s and many more.

What we like:

  • Retro style
  • Adpativ Modular System
  • Sleeps up to 5
  • Large rear door
  • 100% bonded fiberglass construction
  • Double hull insulated fiberglass shell
  • 1.5-inch super strong honeycomb fiberglass floor

You can view all the features and specifications of the Happier Camper on their website .

#2. Mantis by TAXA Outdoors

Mantix by TAXA Outdoors

The Mantis is a very unique and cool-looking travel trailer. While most travel trailers expand sideways with slideouts, the Mantis expands up, giving the occupants more space and headroom.

The Mantis has lots of interior space and comfortably seats 6. The full-size bed easily sleeps 2. It has a host of optional accessories that add to the comfort of your trip.

  • Full interior kitchen
  • Pop-up roof
  • 6,000 BTU A/C
  • Dometic 2-burner stove
  • (2) 20 lbs propane tanks with cover
  • Full-size bed with under bed storage
  • Large 8-ft patio awning

You can view all the features and specifications of the Mantis on their website .

#3. Airstream Nest – Discontinued

Airtream Nest Exterior

Airstream’s Nest is the company’s first travel trailer with a full fiberglass body. The Nest has a very clean and modern design and lots of features; however, they do come at a price. The starting price is more than $40,000.

I wrote an article about Nest and whether or not it’s worth the hefty price tag. You can read that Nest article here .

  • All fiberglass body construction
  • Equipped with both A/C and heating
  • Bluetooth controlled lights
  • Nice looking and functional galley
  • Modern great looking interior colors
  • Stain-resistant seating surfaces
  • Power awning

The above is just some of the features of the Airstream Nest . To view all specifications and features, visit their website .

Airstream discontinued the Nest, but it’s still a cool camper and worth it if you can find a used one at a good price.

#4. Alto R Series by Safari Condo

Alto R Series by Safari Condo

The Alto R Series by Safari Condo is a smart-looking lightweight travel trailer that is aircraft-inspired. It combines durability and aerodynamics into one very light package that can be towed with a car.

In my opinion, the coolest feature of this travel trailer is the retractable roof. It adds 18 more inches of vertical height when it is opened.

This makes the interior roomier and a bit more comfortable to move around it. This is one of my favorite cool travel trailers on this list.

  • A seamless aluminum retractable roof
  • Tempered tinted glass crescent
  • The frame and floor are made of aluminum
  • Adjustable suspension
  • Aerodynamic 75% less drag
  • 76″ by 76″ king bed
  • Several R models to choose from include a fixed roof model.

To learn more about Safari Condo and its lineup of campers, visit their website .

#5. Sealander

Sealander

Talk about cool travel trailers. Right from the start, you can see the Sealander is not your typical travel trailer. It is as comfortable on dry land as it is in the water.

On land, you can tow the Sealnder with a car since it is lightweight. In the water, it can be controlled by an outboard motor just like you would a typical boat.

The Sealander is not yet available in the US, but their Facebook page says it is coming soon.

  • It can be used on land and water
  • Glass fiber reinforced connects to a monocoque shell, which is stable and robust
  • Sealed with Gelcoat layer
  • Leather interior
  • 2300-watt cook burner
  • Swim ladder equipped
  • Unique design

To view more features, specifications, and videos of the Sealander, visit their website . (Some info is in German only)

#6. Winnebago Minie Drop

Winnebago Minie Drop

The Winnebago Minnie Drop is no stranger to our website. We did a complete write-up on this cool camper recently. Read our Minnie Drop Review .

We like this camper’s style and features. It is available in 6 different floor plans. The exterior is available in various colors and graphics.

The cool thing about this travel trailer is the shape. It makes it very aerodynamic and easy to tow. The roomy design allows for a 6’5″ headroom in the main living area. Some models come with a slide-out that adds additional living space.

  • Aerodynamic shape
  • Easy to tow
  • A wet or dry bath is standard
  • Aluminum floor structure with plywood decking
  • Nightshades
  • Custom bedspread
  • Two burner cooktop

The Winnebago Minnie Drop is a very nice travel trailer you should consider if you are looking for a best-in-class travel trailer brand . You can check out all Winnebago models on their site right here .

#7. The Hatchling by Casual Turtle

The Hatchling By Casual Turtle

The Hatchling by Casula Turtle might just be one of our list’s best-looking cool travel trailers. This camper gets right down to basics.

No fancy high-tech materials are used in construction. Simply high-quality wood. We like the exterior wood detail. It almost looks like a log cabin on wheels.

These campers come with just the shell, so you won’t find a bed, burners, seating, etc. What you are getting is a blank slate. You can design the interior and equip it any way you desire.

  • Lightweight at only 840 lbs (empty shell)
  • PVC membrane underside
  • Insulated floor with a maple-faced plywood floor
  • 13″ trailer-rated tires
  • A-frame tongue

This camper is not for everyone. It is a very nice-looking travel trailer; however, it does require additional setup to make it just right for you. Learn more about Casual Turtle .

Cool Travel Trailers Summary

I hope you enjoyed reading about these seven very cool travel trailers. If a more traditional camper is what you are after, check out my article on the best travel trailer brands or my article on the Airstream Nest; if buying a used camper is more to your liking, check out these RV renovations .

8 Tiny Travel Trailers We’re Drooling Over Right Now

Compact travel trailers let you bring all the comforts of home into the great outdoors—without the tonnage of an RV.

Is it just us, or are there suddenly a lot more travel trailers around? We’re spotting teardrop campers being towed along highways, compact Airstreams parked in our neighbors’ driveways, and newfangled, “fifth wheel” rigs set up in the next campsite over. It makes sense: RVing and other forms of self-contained camping have become increasingly popular over the past few years—and the past few months in particular. But not everyone wants to drive something as heavy and hard(er) to maneuver as a full-size travel trailer or RV. For many, teardrop or other towable, small-size travel trailers are easier to drive and still provide all the creature comforts. These days, you can even find tiny travel trailers with tiny bathrooms.

Whether you’re looking for a small, towable camper or a tiny teardrop trailer, here are eight of the best small travel trailers to consider for your next camping adventure.

(Pssst! Not ready to buy? You can rent a camper from one of these dealers or on peer-to-peer rental sites like Outdoorsy .)

1. Polydrops

  • Buy now : From $14,495, polydrops.com
  • Length : 12.5 feet
  • Highlights : Runs on solar energy and easy to tow with any car

This polyhedral pod (pictured at top) isn’t simply a small camping trailer, says Polydrops founder Kyung-Hyun Lew; it’s a portable private space that you can bring nearly everywhere. The gull-wing doors open upwards to reveal a bright, clean interior just big enough to fit the 48- by 75-inch mattress and a few storage cubbies. The rear hatch hides a light-wood kitchenette area with sliding drawers and pull-out counters, as well as space for a Yeti Tundra 35 Cooler .

But it’s not only the angular good looks that makes the Polydrop trailer futuristic—it runs on a 100-watt solar panel and battery, and at 900 to 1,150 pounds is lightweight enough to be towed by just about any car. The four different models are all the same size but include different add-ons, such as aluminum siding, a two-burner stove, a roof rack, and an awning.

2. Tab 400 by NüCamp

  • Buy now: From $40,489, nucamprv.com (find a dealer)
  • Length : 18 feet
  • Highlights : Includes a bathroom and shower combination

NüCamp’s Tab 400 trailer is cozy, but it packs all of the necessities into its tiny footprint. And we mean all—this 18-foot rig even includes a wet bath, a rarity in teardrop trailers. There’s also a queen-sized sleeping area and a dinette that transforms into a second, cushioned sleeping spot. And the furnished kitchenette with refrigerator is also inside the trailer, as opposed to hidden beneath a rear hatch. You can even opt for air-conditioning and heating.

Light-wood interiors make this little trailer feel more like a home than a box, and a sporty, bold red or blue trim gives the Tab some retro chic. And it weighs in at 2,876 pounds, so you don’t need a heavy-duty truck to make it move—a good-size SUV like a Ford Explorer or a Toyota Highlander would do the trick.

3. Bambi by Airstream

  • Buy now: From $49,600, airstream.com (find a dealer)
  • Length : 16- and 20-foot options available
  • Highlights : Full kitchen and bathroom

Nearly everybody loves an Airstream , but towing one of those massive land yachts can be daunting (though, we promise, it is easier than you think ). Enter the compact Bambi, the fun-size version of the classic Airstream that pairs those iconic good looks with proportions that fit neatly in your driveway.

The current model, available in 16- and 20-foot versions, is actually the brand’s original 1961 Bambi trailer reborn. A great trailer for those traveling with kids, the Bambi has all the bells and whistles: a gas stove, air-conditioning and heating, a microwave, a fridge, a bathroom with a standing shower, a dinette that converts into a bed, and another two-person bed with a memory foam mattress. Like the Tab 400, this single-axle trailer is lightweight enough to be towed by a midsize SUV.

4. Carapate

  • Buy now: From $16,000, carapate-aventure.fr
  • Length : 10.5 feet
  • Highlights : Can be towed by smaller cars

OK, this 10.5-foot French trailer won’t be rolling down our streets in the near future—the brand is available throughout Europe but hasn’t made it stateside yet. But that doesn’t mean we’re not still dreaming about the Carapate (and Googling “how much does it cost to ship a camper from Europe to the United States?”). With its blue-and-wood exterior, large windows, and rear-mounted spare tire, the 65-square-foot “mini caravan” has serious old-school vibes—think midcentury woodie station wagon or a vintage sailing yacht.

The floor of the trailer is covered with a modular, removable mattress, which you can rearrange into a couch or pull out for sunset picnics. Walls are lined with pouches, cubbies, and shelves. The kitchen sits in a drawer, so you can use it inside the trailer or pull it out to form an outdoor kitchen. Add-ons include a 120-watt solar charging pack, a kitchen sink system and single-burner stove, a gas/electric fridge box, and more. This lightweight trailer weighs around 1,100 pounds, so it’s easy enough to tow with a smaller car.

5. Classic Teardrop by Timberleaf

  • Buy now: From $21,500, timberleaftrailers.com
  • Length : 14 feet
  • Highlights : Equipped for the outdoors but thoughtfully designed

Timberleaf recently released a small version of its teardrop trailer called the Pika . However, we’re still holding a candle for the original , a 14-foot towable trailer for outdoorsy people who don’t believe that rugged and elegant have to be mutually exclusive. It’s built for the outdoors, with a 100-amp-hour deep cell marine battery (a reliable, long-running battery), 11-gallon water tank under the main cabin, and insulated walls and ceiling. But the interior of this little teardrop trailer features the sorts of thoughtful touches and custom woodwork you’d want in your tiny home.

The cabin holds an almost queen-sized mattress (it’s the same length but is just three inches narrower), storage cabinets, a skylight, and cute, collapsible bedside shelves beneath each side window. The Nordic-style galley, or kitchen, is hidden under a hatch at the back and includes a sink, faucet, LED lighting, and an optional stove and custom cooler, which looks like a wooden steamer trunk. Customize yours with different colored enamel-baked aluminum siding options as well as countertop laminate. At 1,500 pounds, it’s still considered a featherweight trailer, and like the Polydrops Trailer and the Carapate, is towable with a smaller car.

6. Summit by Colorado Teardrop

  • Buy now: From $25,700, coloradoteardropcamper.com .
  • Highlights : Bunk beds make it one of the best small trailers for families

Of all the family-friendly teardrop trailers out there, Colorado Teardrop’s 10.5-foot Summit model has a special feature that might save everyone’s sanity—bunk beds. The two nooks fit horizontally into the five-foot-wide trailer, and an additional queen-size bed converts into a sofa for day use, leaving space for a removable table. The camper’s living space also features a skylight, shelving, and sliding windows.

The customizable galley is accessible from the back of the trailer and has a surprising amount of storage space with room for a cooler, water tank, firewood, charcoal, kitchenware, food, and more. You might even be able to store some extra luggage in there. With anodized aluminum siding that comes in a range of colors, and burly off-road tires, this 1,750-pound trailer is ready for any adventure.

7. The HC1 by Happier Camper

  • Buy now: From $24,950, happiercamper.com
  • Length : 13 feet
  • Highlights : Flexible interior design and option for a toilet

We’ve loved the stylishly retro Happier Camper since 2016, when it appeared in the pages of our November/December issue. And we still haven’t gotten over it. Since then, the brand has come out with the Traveler, a new, bigger version of its adorable original model , which includes an all-important bathroom. But we’re still awestruck that their original, high-quality tiny trailer can sleep five and still be pulled by a Mini Cooper.

The 13-foot, 1,100-pound trailer’s interior features a modular Adaptiv system, which uses floor panel components and indoor/outdoor block furniture to arrange and rearrange into beds, benches, tables, kitchenettes—you could even make a bunk bed or add a toilet to the smaller version’s modular layout. The large rear hatch opens up, which gives you sweeping views of wherever you’re parked.

8. Sealander

  • Buy now: From $20,250, sealander.de
  • Length : 15 feet
  • Highlights : Doubles as a boat and includes a wet bath

The Sealander went viral a few years ago thanks to its clever, amphibious abilities. The German-made fiberglass-reinforced plastic pod looks like a sleek and modern teardrop trailer, but it floats. And the outboard motor allows you to navigate the 15-foot trailer around your chosen body of water. The Sealander comfortably fits a handful of adults on an outing. The living space can be customized to include a cushioned sleeping area for two that converts into seating for six with a table, an onboard shower, a freshwater toilet, a sink, stove module, grill, and more.

As you might expect from a travel trailer made in Europe (though yes, it is available in the United States), this 1,100-pound camper can be pulled by most vehicles, including smaller ones.

5 Best Small Campers and Travel Trailers

Posted by Bernadette Rankin March 31, 2024 Updated April 01, 2024

Ditch the gas guzzlers and diesel engines. Take your glamping to the next level with our favorite lightweight trailers that are perfect for the next generation of travelers.

Gone are the days of spending a fortune on gargantuan campers and travel trailers and the gas-guzzling vehicles required to tow them. It’s easier than ever to bid adieu to the bigger-is-better RV trends of the past with a new era of small campers built for the next generation of adventure travelers.

This shift has led to the advent of an exceptional array of lightweight travel trailers and campers suitable for mid-sized SUVs, normal-sized trucks, and even capable cars. The most straightforward travel trailer and camper options are entry-level, budget-friendly, and even boast better resale value compared to their colossal counterparts.

Ready to get started? Explore our list of top picks for small campers and travel trailers,  all ready to make your camping weekend the best you’ve ever had….until the next one rolls around.

1. Happier Camper HC1

cute travel trailers

This retro fiberglass darling has enough viral-worthy visual charm that you’re sure to be stopped for soon-to-be-posted social media snaps everywhere you happen to adventure. Compact and nimble, the Happier HC1 effortlessly navigates paved wildscapes, city cruising and tucks right into tight spaces when you’ve found the perfect place to park for the night.

Beneath the vintage exterior, Happier Campers all offer entirely innovative modular interior sleeping, toilet, shower and kitchenette design options that will have you drooling at the floor plan possibilities. Our own personal tour of the HC1 had us experiencing how easy it can be to lose sight of our own personal adventure travel needs due to customization overload (and delight).

As happily distracting as this camper cutie is, we had to remind ourselves that more customization often means less interior space to work with — it’s a tradeoff.

The Details:

  • Empty/dry weight: 1,100 lbs.
  • Exterior length, width and height: 13’5″ x 7’ x 7’
  • Sleeps up to: Customizable
  • Price: $24,950

Pros and Cons

  • Pro:   Show-stopping aesthetic
  • Pro:  Fits in most places, including a single parking spot
  • Pro:  More affordable than other options
  • Con:  Clearance for opening  the back hatch door of the HC1 must be considered when backing into any given space.
  • Con:   Happier Campers are not readily available for immediate purchase.

2. Winnebago Micro Minnie

Winnebago Micro Minnie trailer

Winnebago established itself in the RV industry in 1958 with its original behemoth–sized models and long-standing reputation, which makes the Micro Minnie series a convenient offering for those who want to travel in a compact and affordable way.

This downsized series comes in at just seven feet wide. But, the Micro Minnie offers 12 interior and exterior layout options to choose from for your home away from home depending all upon your travel needs. Recreating with your family? Sleeping and entertainment customizations are yours for the shaping. Looking forward to flexing your cooking skills while gazing upon a moonrise over those national park mountains?  Just say the word and Winnebago has your chef covered.  Need to hit all of the necessities to be a self-sufficient explorer?  Toilet and shower options are yours for the taking.

No matter which floor plan you choose to go with, you’re definitely paying for the Winnebago name — this is a pricier option, especially for such a small size. Still, our tour had us falling in love with the luxe feel that comes with the Winnebago brand.

  • Empty/dry weight: Starting at 3,360 lbs.
  • Exterior length, width and height: Starting at 19’ 5” x 7’ x 10’ 5”
  • Sleeps up to: Customizable
  • Price: Starting at $37,182
  • Pro:  Dual axles allow for more stable towing and easier backing
  • Pro:  Beautiful interior makes even boondocking feel luxurious
  • Pro:   Solid interior and exterior construction
  • Pro:   Best-in-class kitchen design includes a large fridge with separate freezer and window above the sink and stove
  • Con:   Smaller fresh, gray and black water tank capacity means less time to backcountry boondock before having to seek out a dumping station

3. Airstream Basecamp

cute travel trailers

Airstream has earned its place as an iconic national symbol of the road-trip life.  But what if an adventurer wanted to take their wheeled home off the paved path? The Basecamp travel trailer is Airstream’s answer to adventure for those who have smaller tow vehicles and backroad wanderlust.

Airstream’s shift away from larger campers earned awards over the years and even an ongoing partnership with REI (which shows who their target audience actually is). While still pricier than comparable trailers, the Basecamp offers a more accessible entry point into the Airstream experience compared to the brand’s larger “silver bullets.” This is thanks to its smaller size and lighter base weight. But never fear: it still comes decked out with the iconic, on-brand silver aluminum siding that makes Airstream easily identifiable anywhere in the country.

Despite its compact size, the Basecamp doesn’t sacrifice much. A well-equipped kitchen, bathroom, lounge area, and sleeping space seamlessly coexist in this sub-17-foot trailer. It feels surprisingly roomy within the limited square footage.

  • Empty/dry weight: 2,650 lbs.
  • Exterior length, width and height: 16’ 2” x 7’ x 8’ 8.75” (depending on floor plan choice)
  • Sleeps up to: 4 people depending on floor plan
  • Price: Starting at $46,900
  • Pro:  Giant 180-degree front windows help the smaller space feel much bigger
  • Pro:  Classic Airstream aluminum aesthetic
  • Con: Front facing window is prone to shattering when hit by kicked-up rocks. And, repair times are slow due to the custom, non-industry standard shape.
  • Con: It’s pricier than most others on this list

4. Scamp 13′

cute travel trailers

Born straight out of the funky grooves of the 1970s, Scamp has remained loyal to its iconic look over 50 years later.  So beloved is this fiberglass design that an entire category was created when other brands (like Casita) followed suit with their own iterations of the nugget camper style.

Created to be small and lightweight, new Scamp trailer options include 13-, 16-, or 19-foot, highly customizable models. The tiny 13-foot option will turn heads and inspire social media posts with its charmingly small shape, while the 16-foot version stands out for its optimal balance between space and weight. The 19-foot version is the Big Boy. It lacks the same level of convenience and aesthetic appeal, ruling out all but those who are able to accommodate its fifth-wheel design (and totally excluding it from a “small camper” category).

Based on our experience, the Scamp is best for sticking to city streets, paved paths and established campgrounds unless you’re willing to haul extra gallons of water and other necessities. This tiny travel trailer will work hard to serve entry-level adventurers who stray outside for the majority of the day but appreciate the basic comforts of a warm meal, a hot shower, and a cozy place to sleep when the sun goes down.

The Details:

  • Empty/dry weight: 1,200 lbs.
  • Exterior length, width and height: Starts at 13′ x 6’8” x 7’6”
  • Sleeps up to: Customizable depending on size and floor plan choice
  • Price: Starts at $19,921
  • Pro:   Retro  aesthetic
  • Pro:  Ultralight fiberglass exterior shell allows for easy towing with most cars
  • Pro:   Quite affordable compared to most other campers
  • Con: Toilet and shower do not come standard with the base package
  • Con: Barebone amenities and minimalist construction

5. nuCamp TAB

nuCamp teardrop trailer

Teardrop-style campers first came on the scene in the 1930s with an interesting marketing angle as a honeymoon house trailer.  By the time the 1940s rolled around, these minimalist dwellings on wheels were the travel trailer of choice for Americans wanting to leave their tent behind and step up their cozy camping game.

These days, the rounded front and tapered rear design of the distinctive teardrop travel trailer is still around, but with a twist. A host of upgrades and masterful redesigns maximize every single millimeter of interior space. (If you’re the handy sort, there are plenty of  DIY teardrop kits available, too.)

We’d call the nuCamp a trailblazer in the modern teardrop camper industry. The nuCamp TAB series is compact, lightweight, and can be hauled by most crossover vehicles and SUVs.  Its gnarly off-road tires and molded undercarriage shield are thoroughly thought out for those who want to leave well-worn paved highways behind but not vital camper parts when road conditions get rough.

Shockingly, some floorplans of the nuCamp TAB series have masterfully designed these minuscule spaces to fit a hot water system, air conditioning, a small kitchen, and a wet bath while out on your remote, rugged adventures.

Touring the interior of the nuCamp TAB had us inspired to take this teardrop trailer on a solo trip as the layout seems to be best suited for a party of one. Otherwise, treat this travel trailer as a welcome home base at the beginning and end of a long day trip when your adventurer’s agenda only includes checking off the most basic of needs.

  • Empty/dry weight: 1,994 lbs.
  • Exterior length, width and height: Starts at 15’ 3” x 6’ 8” x 7’ 8”
  • Price: Starts at $33,990
  • Pro:   Base package includes heavy-duty tires, a pitched axle and electric brakes for  confidence with off-road maneuvering
  • Pro:  Can be purchased immediately
  • Con:  Interior height is only 5’9” which is tough for taller folks
  • Con:   Large price tag for a camper that becomes easily crowded

What to Consider When Buying a Small or Compact Trailer

Before making a purchase, it’s important to consider these campers and RVs in person and thoroughly research each model to ensure it meets your specific personal requirements. For example, where do you like to camp? If you are a person who spends more time in a campground, an option like the Scamp with lower clearance and smaller tanks is a great bet. However, if you prefer to boondock and take your trailer off-roading, you’ll want more clearance and larger tanks so you can remain out longer. In this instance, a burlier option like the nuCamp TAB may be a better choice.

Additionally, keep factors like towing capacity, amenities, storage, and overall build quality top of mind. Walking through campers and trailers is always fun — they’re always so cozy! But don’t let the staged aesthetics deter you from your mission. Pay attention to the details like whether there is enough storage for your family and how easily your vehicle can tow the trailer.  It doesn’t matter how cute the camper is if your vehicle can’t get it out of the driveway. And, always check for the latest reviews and updates on models, as the RV industry is continually evolving.

12 Best Small Travel Trailers for a Family of 4

Small Travel Trailer

Small travel trailers come in all different shapes, sizes, and configurations.

But if you’re looking for a small travel trailer that can fit a family of four , this is not always an easy task.

As many small campers are not designed or set up for a family of four to comfortably live and sleep inside the trailer.

So we did a ton of research and created this list of the best small travel trailers for a family of 4 .

To showcase some of the best options, if you’re looking for a small travel trailer designed for families .

Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17FD Floorplan

One of the smallest and cheapest small traveler trailers on the market for a family of four is the Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17FD .

Making the trailer perfect for first-time RVers or anyone shopping for a new RV on a budget that still needs to sleep four.

While you’re not going to find too many bells and whistles on this basic small trailer, you do have everything you need for a weekend camping trip with the family .

Including such amenities as a kitchen with a two-burner propane cooktop, sink, and mini-fridge, as well as a small wet bath, a convertible dinette booth, and a rear queen bed.

Scamp 13 Trailer Standard Layout 1

One of my personal favorites when it comes to small travel trailers is the Scamp 13 Standard Trailer because of its super short length, lightweight design, and affordable price point.

But there’s a catch if you want this trailer to sleep four, as you have to option the trailer without a bathroom.

This is because the front of the 13-Foot Scamp Trailer can either be optioned with a convertible sofa that converts into bunk beds or a wet bath.

13 Foot Scamp Trailer Interior

But if you choose the wet bath, the only place to sleep in this small camper is the convertible dinette booth that can only sleep two.

If you can camp without a bathroom though, you won’t find a smaller or lighter travel trailer that can actually sleep four campers at a time.

  • Equipped with a convertible four-person dinette booth, providing a great space for mealtime or family activities like board games.
  • Front bunk beds make a great place for two kids to sleep.

Just because this camper from KZ RV offers toy hauler capability though doesn’t mean it lacks the usual travel trailer creature comforts.

As the Escape E17 Hatch has all the standard RV amenities.

  • Offers a built-in four-person dinette booth that provides flex space for the whole family to hang out together.

Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E16BH Floorplan

If you liked the above Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G20BHS but looking for a smaller lighter bunkhouse option, you might want to check out the Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E16BH .

As this Flagstaff E-Pro, which is the sister RV to the Rockwood Geo Pro, offers a bunkhouse floorplan and is over 2 feet shorter and 200 pounds lighter.

Making it one of the smallest bunkhouse campers available, and ideal for less capable tow vehicles, such as SUVs and small trucks .

Despite the trailer’s smaller size though, it still feels surprisingly spacious inside, thanks to its kitchen slide-out, which helps to open up the interior.

What Is the Best Couples Travel Trailer Under 30 Feet?

cute travel trailers

  • Length: 26’9”
  • Dry Weight: 5,578 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,027 pounds
  • Interior Height: 78”

Favorite Feature: Hidden Shelves

The Campsite Reserve 23CC features an L-shaped kitchen, a U-shaped booth dinette, a large rear bathroom, and a king-size bed. Even though it’s less than 27 feet long, it has everything you need for a comfortable weekend camping trip, including a tankless water heater, a backup camera, huge windows, and a water filtration system.

My favorite feature is the hidden shelving behind the television. Just pull out the entertainment center, and there’s plenty of storage for pantry items, kitchen gadgets, dishes, and more. The outside kitchen extends the cooking space, allowing you to enjoy grilling without hauling another piece of equipment.

East to West Silver Lake 2500RD

Image of East to West Silver Lake 2500RD floorplan layout.

  • Length: 29’10”
  • Dry Weight: 6,098 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 3,347 pounds
  • Interior Height: 81”

Favorite Feature: Ample Interior Living Space

At just under 30 feet long, the Silver Lake 2500RD is one of the largest travel trailers on our list. Because of its size and one large slide-out, you’ll have plenty of room to entertain guests, enjoy a Friday night movie, or host the grandkids.

There’s a U-shaped booth dinette, jackknife sofa, and L-shaped kitchen in the main living area. In the front is a king bed and double wardrobes, as well as underneath and overhead storage. You won’t have any problems finding places for clothes, dishes, camping gear, and other necessities in this travel trailer. And because of its large cargo carrying capacity, you don’t have to worry about packing too many items.

Forest River Salem 22ERAS

  • Length: 28’2”
  • Dry Weight: 6,196 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,489 pounds
  • Interior Height: 80”

Favorite Feature: Huge Rear Kitchen

If you’re looking for a large kitchen in a small travel trailer, the Salem 22ERAS has it. My favorite feature is the massive L-shaped rear kitchen, which includes bar seating and ample counterspace. The double sink is also a nice amenity when cooking and cleaning up.

In addition, there is an oversized refrigerator, a full-height pantry, theater seating, and hidden shelves behind the entertainment center. The walk-through bathroom separates the main living space from the front bedroom, providing privacy if one person enjoys waking up early or if you invite over guests for a weekend campfire.

Keystone Cougar Half-Ton 25FKD

Cougar 25FKD floorplan

  • Length: 29’11”
  • Dry Weight: 7,130 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,670 pounds
  • Interior Height: 84” (at center); 78” (at edges)

Favorite Feature: Two Slide-Outs

With the two slide-outs, you’ll enjoy a spacious interior in the rear bedroom and front living area. The Cougar Half-Ton 25FKD includes a queen bed with a wardrobe and dresser for plenty of storage. Like a few of the other couple’s travel trailers under 30 feet, it also features additional storage behind the entertainment center.

The L-shaped front kitchen offers plenty of room for meal prep, and the booth dinette and tri-fold sleeper sofa provide two separate lounge spaces. If you’re hosting the grandkids for the weekend, they’ll enjoy privacy and space in this front living room. These features make this Cougar camper one of the best couple’s travel trailers.

East to West Alta 1900MMK

23easttowestalta1900mmk-best-couples-travel-trailer-under-30-feet

  • Length: 25’
  • Dry Weight: 5,463 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,147 pounds

Favorite Feature: Murphy Bed

The Alta 1900MMK is the only travel trailer on our list with a Murphy bed. What I love about this floorplan is its day-to-night versatility. Enjoy two sofas for lounging during the day while the bed is tucked away. At night, it’s easy to bring down the queen Murphy bed and savor a comfortable night’s sleep.

This couple’s trailer also features a removable table for a simple dining space and a large countertop for meal prep. You won’t have any problem finding room for your coffee maker , Instant Pot, crockpot, air fryer, or other kitchen gadgets.

Rockwood Signature 8263MBR

Rear bathroom in rockwood-8263mbr-couples-travel-trailer-under-30-feet

  • Dry Weight: 7,809 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,056 pounds
  • Interior Height: 86”

Favorite Feature: Large Rear Bathroom

While some travel trailers under 30 feet skimp on bathroom space, the Rockwood Signature 8263MBR prioritizes this part of the camper. It features a double vanity, a large shower with a seat, and space for two people to move about freely. This rear bathroom is a great selling point when searching for the best travel trailer for a couple.

I also love the spacious U-shaped kitchen with ample countertops that include bar seating. Because of this designated eating area, there’s no need for an additional dinette, keeping this travel trailer under 30 feet long. The slide-out in the living area also increases the interior space.

Keystone Bullet Crossfire 2530RDS

bullet-253rds floorplan

  • Length: 29’8”
  • Dry Weight: 5,670 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,930 pounds
  • Interior Height: 82” (at center)

Favorite Feature: Queen Bed

The Bullet Crossfire 2530RD is very similar to the East to West Silver Lake mentioned above. It has a large U-shaped rear dinette that comfortably seats two to four people and a tri-fold sofa for additional guest sleeping space.

But what I like most about this floorplan is the queen bed. Many new RVers underappreciate the value of a queen bed, as it creates more space to walk around the front bedroom. You’ll feel less cramped when you get ready in the morning and enjoy easy access to the side wardrobes and overhead storage compartments.

Forest River Wildwood 22RBS

chaise lounge in wildwood-22rbs travel trailer under 30 feet

  • Length: 26’11”
  • Dry Weight: 5,928 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,837 pounds

Favorite Feature: Chaise Lounge

If you’re looking for a unique feature, you’ve found it in the Wildwood 22RBS . The chaise lounge in the central living area is the perfect place to hang out with friends, cozy up with a book, or watch the big game. While this couple’s travel trailer is under 30 feet, it doesn’t feel cramped.

There’s also a removable table, an entertainment center with a fireplace, an oversized fridge, and a walk-in pantry. The rear bathroom and front bedroom are pretty standard for couple’s travel trailers this size, but the main living space is truly unique.

Keystone Coleman Lantern 25REX

rear entertainment center in keystone coleman lantern 25rex

  • Dry Weight: 6,270 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,496 pounds
  • Interior Height: 82”

Favorite Feature: Spacious Rear Entertainment Area

The Coleman Lantern 25REX offers a huge rear living area that’s perfect when you invite friends and family over. It’s also great for couples who enjoy movie nights or watching ball games. The entertainment center sits along the rear wall directly across from the theater seating.

Because of this spacious design, the kitchen doesn’t have as much counterspace as the others on this list. But you still have all the appliances and amenities you need for an enjoyable weekend camping trip. Plus, if you have a dog, this open area provides more room for you and your furry friend.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 210QB

jay flight slx 210qb floorplan

  • Length: 25’8”
  • Dry Weight: 4,195 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,305 pounds

Favorite Feature: Lightweight and Compact

The Jay Flight SLX 210QB is one of the few couple’s travel trailers under 30 feet with no slide-outs. is the. While this means a smaller interior space, it also means no slide malfunctions or problems. It also means a more lightweight camper. If you’re looking for a camper under 5,000 pounds , this is an excellent choice.

Despite the small space, I love how Jayco has included h a dinette and a sofa. By removing the wall separating the bedroom from the living space, Jayco creates a more open feel with this travel trailer’s floorplan.

The kitchen is very small, with only a tiny countertop beside the sink, but if you prefer to cook on your Blackstone or a campfire, you won’t mind the smaller space. And even though this travel trailer is less than 26 feet long, you still get a full bathroom.

What Is the Best Sized Travel Trailer for 2 People?

If you want a lightweight travel trailer for couples, you’ll likely want something 25-30 feet long. Campers of this length provide options for folks who want to tow with SUVs , smaller trucks, or heavy-duty pickups.

However, if your tow vehicle can handle the added weight, a travel trailer with a slide-out or two will offer more interior space. Even for a couple, this extra space makes your trailer feel more like a home.

What Is the Best Truck to Pull a 30-foot Travel Trailer?

When choosing a camper, you always want to stay comfortably within your vehicle’s towing capacity .

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the total weight an RV can safely handle based on its axles and tire ratings. If the GVWR exceeds your vehicle’s towing capacity, you need to upgrade the vehicle or choose a lighter camper.

Having said that, many travel trailers under 30 feet weigh less than 8,000 pounds, and some weigh less than 6,000 pounds. The towing capacity of a light-duty truck like a Ford F150 or RAM 1500 maxes out around 10,000 pounds, on average. Some models offer more towing capacity, and others offer less. Your towing capacity will vary depending on the year, make, model, trim, and aftermarket upgrades for your specific truck.

Learn more about choosing a vehicle to tow your camper in this article!

Traveling couples don’t need as much space as a family of six. But you still want ample room to move about freely without bumping into each other. And if you want to entertain guests, you need extra space. These travel trailers may be under 30 feet long, but they don’t lack the amenities or appeal!

Picking out the best RV name is almost like a right of passage. Sure, the tradition sparked from boats, where naming your seafaring machine is mandatory. Still, it’s a practice that brings meaning to your home away from home. By picking a camper name for your RV or travel trailer, your road trip partner becomes yours through and through.

We have two RVs, so we had to come up with two names. Then we decided to name our Jeep that we tow behind us too.

We ended up naming our Class C RV Chessie since we are from Maryland and we live near the Chesapeake Bay.

We are also huge fans of the TV Show Get Smart, which stars Don Adams. We even had Don Adams’s daughter Chris, who is a certified wedding officiant here in Maryland, perform our wedding in 2022!

Don Adams, aka Agent 99, drove two different cars in the hit series. One was a light blue Karmen Ghia, and the other was a bright red convertible, which was a Sunbeam Tiger. So we named our Class A RV the Karen Ghia and our bright red Jeep Wrangle the Sunbeam Tiger.

We hope you have as much fun naming your RV as we did naming ours. We recommend you have fun and get creative!

There are endless name options out there, but we know that coming up with a creative name is easier said than done. So, we’ve curated our list of more than 250 perfect RV or travel trailer names. Should you stumble upon the perfect one for your vehicle, it’s all yours.

Why Do People Give Their RV Names?

People give their RV names because it establishes a relationship between the driver and the vehicle. There’s no real difference when it comes to naming RVs. It’s a personal thing. We spend an extensive amount of time in our vehicles, whether driving to and from work, hauling a travel trailer across the country, or driving a motorhome.

While naming vehicles is the product of naming boats for centuries, it’s not necessarily the same. The naming of boats was entirely logistical, at least in the beginning. It made it easier to quickly identify and communicate about the various vessels on the water. Over time, that grew into a rite of passage. The same is true of vehicles and RVs.

Is It Bad Luck To Change RV Names?

It’s not bad luck to change a vehicle’s name, at least not in the same way that such superstitions developed over boats. While seafaring vessels have always carried the aura of the mysterious and a degree of superstition, the same is not true of cars, trucks, SUVs, and campers.

The sea is still a great mystery, with only 5% of the Earth’s oceans and major bodies of water having been explored. There’s nothing mysterious about I-95 or the Walmart parking lot. The same superstitious aura that lingers over all sea-going vessels is conspicuously absent on American roads.

While naming your RV is a lot of fun, especially if you come up with a good one, renaming it isn’t going to bring a plague or a curse upon your family line.

Choose an RV Name Route

First things first. When you name an RV, you need to decide which path to take. We suppose it’s not much different than picking a route for your roadway journey.

Should the name be funny to reflect your laid-back sense of humor? It might be wise to poke fun at your massive (in more ways than one) investment. Should it take on a sense of outdoor enthusiasm? After all, that’s why you got the travel trailer in the first place.

Should you go for a more traditional name? This’ll be the one you can share with no shame, regardless of where you venture. What about reflecting your love for music and pop culture? With a name like this, you may have an easier time finding like-minded travelers on the open road.

Whatever path you take in the camper naming journey will be a fun one. We’ve come up with a set of names for every type of RV owner. It’s no secret the camper population is a diverse one, so it only makes sense we’d cover all our bases.

Humorous RV Names

People tend to name their RVs, fifth wheels, and other mobile campers with humor in mind. This includes puns and jokes alike. When we hear names like this, it always gives us a little chuckle. We suspect we’re not the only ones, too. Why not have some fun with your holiday mobile by choosing a lighthearted name that brings a smile to the faces of passers-by?

Hi Mike – Our 2021 Fleetwood Bounder 35K with the Pacific exterior graphics is known formally as “Motor Vessel Bonnie Blue Bounder” or MV Bonnie Blue for short. Yes, that is nautical terminonlogy there.

I know Chessie is the name of your Class C and you’ve had your Thor a little over a year. Does it have a name yet?

We named ours ” Goldilox” . . . our last name is Oxenfeld and she is “just right”!

We called ours “Goldilox” . . . our last name is Oxenfeld and she is JUST RIGHT!!

After reading your suggestions, we’re leaning toward “Cummins and Goins’ ” We drive a Ram with a Cummins engine

We have a Little Guy Mini Max that we have made as cozy and homey inside as possible with wall stickers, paintings of birds (by my husband) and a wall covering on the back wall that duplicates the blonde wood cabinets arount the trailer. Lots of pillows and quilts and a teak table replaces the metal one it came with. We call our retreat “Hygge Hus”. Danish word and lifestyle “hygge” means “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).”

We call ours RSerendipity

My Vans name is Harley because I wish it was a Harley.

When we got our Foretravel and my husband mentioned that we should name her (which I didn’t even know was a thing) it didn’t take me very long to come up with the name we decided on. My husband is from Mississippi and I’m from Louisiana so the obvious no brainer is Miss Lou.

My wife’s family had an old pop-up camper with a bumper sticker on it that said “Archie Bunker for President”. When My wife and I bought out new Travel trailer we named it Archie 2.0 with a picture of Archie Bunker. I had a custom magnetic bumper made.

Gone with the Dogs — since all six will be traveling in the truck with us and the trailer was purchased for all 8 of us!

We have a 19ft GeoPro FDS that we call Ginny. Ginny the GeoPro. 🙂

Thanks for sharing the name of your camper Becky! Mike

I love all the ideas but we just went with Ethel. What better companion to have on a road trip?

I have purchased a 15 foot Yellowstone (67) and have had one disaster after another. So I have temporarily names her POS but going to be Phoenix. I need help getting the two names to sound cute but haven’t come up with it yet. Any suggestions?

that’s named her POS not Names. Please correct before posting

Our new (to us!) Allegro Bay is Sandy Beaches or Sandy B for short. We are beach lovers and Sandy B is painted blue and tan. We are currently remodeling the inside with a beach theme!

We called our first little 1975 motorhome “Felicity”

felicity noun fe·lic·i·ty | \ fi-ˈli-sə-tē \ plural felicities Definition of felicity 1a: the quality or state of being happy especially : great happiness marital felicity b: an instance of happiness 2: something that causes happiness … the small felicities and absurdities of real life manage to peek through the gloom. — A. O. Scott

Our second one (1986) was “Fair S. Beulla” (Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it)

Came here to find a great name for the “newest” one (1989)….my daughter would be ecstatic if we called her Trailer Swift as suggested above…but alas, she’s a motorhome.

Hi Carolyn! Thanks for providing all this great info about your motorhome name! I love it! Thanks! Mike

We are big Tom Petty Fans. This is our first travel trailer, and we are learning so much so we named it “Learning to Fly”. In the song Tom sings “Started out from God knows where, I guess I’ll know when I get there”. As we head into the retirement years we will be “Learning to Fly”!

Hi Karen, I love Tom Petty too! We are learning to fly in one way or another! All the best with your new travel trailer! Mike

We have a small teardrop camper and named it Little Getaway.

Love that name for your teardrop trailer! Mike

Named my Highway Vagabond.

Great name for a camper! Mike

My A frame is named Pandora, originally after the high school librarian that had a huge positive influence on me but evolving to include the “opening of the box” theme so similar to opening an A frame. I am now converting a navy blue (tiny) Ford Transit and was struggling to find the right name. After reading your list, it will definitely be The T.A.R.D.I.S.! Thank you!

Pandora is a clever name for your A Frame! Love it! Mike

I Named my Travel Trailer after a Led Zeppelin Song…

“RAMBLE ON”

Love It!!!!

Perfect song theme name for a camper! Thanks for sharing! Mike

We just bought a travel trailer. The adventure is to look for places to fish and paint art. So the name of our camper is “Fishing for Art, or FArt for short. LOL.

Lol! Great name! Mike

Very creative!

We are thinking of Bus 2 Move. Like bust-a-move. We have a 42′ class a.

Hi Joyce! A very clever play on words to name your motorhome! Mike

Mary Trailer Moore or Trailer Swift

Hi Manda, I love both of those names! Thanks for sharing! Mike

Loved your article, and it really got our creativity going… thanks for sharing!

Hi KatyDid, Happy to help! Mike

We just got our 1993 International 34+’ bus. Beautiful silver metallic outside. We need a name. We are from Fairport, Ks. Very countrified. We love animals, wine, gardening, camping. Please help.

Kansas Kountry Kampers (?)

We’ve named our 2005 Winnebago, “Happenstance”. We like cruising around the country, not knowing where we’re going to stop for the night. It always works out.

That is a great name and a great attitude! Thanks for sharing! Mike

I live in my 32 foot camper with my four cats. Thus, I named my camper….. CatCanDo. Love my little home on wheels

What a great song theme name! Very clever! Mike

My wife is a Doctor Who fan, so we went with the Doctor’s traveling companion, Sarah Jane.

We just bought our first camper for off season camping -ironically we are too busy during the summer to camp. So I’m thinking about naming ours ‘Shitters Full’ from Christmas Vacation. It’s a family favorite and tradition to watch that movie over and over on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We love that movie.

Bears’ Den has also come up. The nickname my husband has given me is Bear. This all came about years ago when I wasn’t always so happy and eager to see the sun come up. My personality matched that of a grizzly 😂 It stuck.

So we will be naming our camper. Just not sure yet which way this is going. It’ll be fun either way.

Have fun naming your trailer! Mike

We named ours The B’s Nest after Billy and Barb

I just bought my first travel trailer. I had been camping before but things always seemed to go wrong. I had a cat that was named Kaboom. What a way to remember her and warn others getting close to beware.

As a woman camping on my own, I’ve been accused of being rather bold, so my vintage pop-up is Miss Moxie !

Hi Karen, Great name for a camper!

Our A-frame tent camper is named Ellie. She is a character from the movie UP whose tagline is “The adventure is out there”. She is adventurous and ready to take on life with gusto. Such a great outlook for OUR camping adventures.

Thinking of the name Lil Lady because she is a little camper for us 2 ladies!

I purchased a 22ft 1991 Kit that was in need of some serious TLC. Not quite done, but I have dubbed her “The Bonnie Lass”, in honor of all she’s undergone….and how beautiful she’ll be.

We just bought a new 34’er and all of are friends said she was so fancy. So FANCY NANCY it is.

Love it! Thanks for reading the article! Mike

Our first camper we named the “Love Shack” Now we have a new one and can’t figure out a good name for her… Taking her out more here in a few weeks and hoping something will come to us.

We have a tiny 6 x 8 Runaway camper that we named Pixie Jane with the quote “to there and back again”

We are going to purchase a class c this year and plan to name her Beatrix.

My son had a real old dump of a camper for a short time. I noticed it leaned a bit so I had a custom plate for him he loved “THE TILTIN HILTON’

LOL! I love that name! Thanks for reading the article and chipping in a cool name! Mike

How to Choose the Perfect Name for Your RV

First, you’ve got to decide whether you want clever camper names or funny RV names. It really helps narrow down your decision.

Maybe you are not looking for cool names but would prefer something sentimental, instead. For instance, naming your camper after a lost family member. Or after a place that you lived or a movie that inspired your wanderlust.

Whatever makes you smile when you say the name is what you should use!

Second, do you want a name that will appear on your RV? For instance, do you want to make a vinyl decal or a window sticker and have everyone see the name? If so, you might not want to have “The Love Machine” across your back window for half of America to see! (Or maybe you do….)

Finally, will you have a tow vehicle? Do you want a name combination that includes your vehicle and your trailer? For instance, Elroy and Judy (from the Jetsons). Or Thelma and Louise.

What you need to know about travel in small SUVs, travel trailers

W e’ve been retired for 11 years and have explored almost every option in economical U.S. and Canadian travel - by car, by SUV, and with several small travel trailers. We’ve crossed the United States and Canada four times, visited 49 states (lacking only Alaska, which we hope to fix this summer), made many shorter forays in the western United States/Canada, and have worked to refine our travel to be economical, while enjoying comfortable and safe journeys.

In those years, we’ve come almost full circle. From a family that once packed our two young daughters, a big canvas tent, and miscellaneous camping gear into a four-door Chevy Chevette in the 1980s, we’ve now arrived at “future travel,” just the two of us, comfortably ensconced in a small Ford Escape, all-wheel-drive SUV, not all that dissimilar from our travels with our young daughters (and I promise my spouse a fair share of motel overnights). Here’s how we got to this point.

Twenty years ago, reaching middle age, realizing that sleeping on an air mattress in a midsize tent was sometimes less than comfortable and did not assuage Susan‘s fear of bears in the western states, we explored and then purchased a series of small but increasingly larger small travel trailers.

Our first trailer was a Kit Kamper teardrop, all 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 4 feet tall, pulled behind several small four-cylinder cars. The trailer was cute, and I could still get good gas mileage in the high 20 miles per gallon, towed with a small car. It made for cozy sleeping arrangements for two people, though one had better appreciate their partner in a double bed only 46 1/2 inches wide!

We refined our travel kit and moved on to a fully rebuilt classic, a ‘58 Scotty teardrop trailer, reflecting the woodworking wizardry of a West Virginia shop teacher. We drove across the country, picked up the trailer, and continued onto a Gettysburg bicycling week-long outing with my brother and several friends. We then crossed the country with that somewhat-more-refined tiny trailer, getting about 27 miles per gallon towed behind a five-speed Ford Focus.

After eight years with tiny trailers, a somewhat bigger trailer had appeal, still lightweight, but one that Susan could stand up in, offering a larger bed, sleeping accommodations for a grandkid or two, a small range, more storage, and a dinette that can accommodate four people.

Having been attracted to classic Scotty trailers, I found a 13-foot ‘64 Scotty Sportsman in Southern California, bought it, realizing it needed some work, and embarked upon a several-year project of rebuilding the Scotty from the frame up. The result was a classic trailer that can accommodate two adults and a couple of grandkids and offer interior comfort for stormy days, still delivering pretty good gas mileage when towed behind a smaller SUV like a Ford Escape (though gasoline mileage is reduced to about 19 miles per gallon).

In more recent years, we still enjoy seeing exciting new places and traveling by personal vehicle but continue to despise high gas prices and poor gas mileage, or lack of creature comforts at our travel destination. We’re still willing to sacrifice to save money and extend our travel budget.

We began to see more small/mid-sized SUVs connected to a tent on the back end in campgrounds. After exploring the options, we purchased an SUV-connectable tent. I built two raised platforms to insert into our SUV, elevating the floor 7 inches to accommodate four plastic storage bins for camping gear, clothing, and food items. We added a 4-inch foam mattress for a cozy sleeping platform and blackout curtains for the SUV and purchased the tent to attach to the back end of our vehicle for about $250.

Result: comfy sleeping accommodations inside the SUV, and a roomie, nifty 10 x 10‘ room on the back for daytime use and shelter from a stormy day. With that outfit, we get 30 miles per gallon from our Ford Escape.

For your travel plans, you’ve got to determine what you want, how much comfort you demand, how much stuff you want to carry, and what budget you’re dealing with. If a small trailer fits your plans, now is a great time to buy a slightly used classic or a newer travel trailer. Popular classic or new trailers (whose designs we admire and get good owner ratings) include Scotty, Shasta, Airstream, T@B, Casita, and R-pod. Put up a daily search in your local Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace and visit a local RV dealer to see what they have in both new and used small-to-midsize trailers.

For inspiration and how to shop/inspect classic/used travel trailers like a Scotty, see the national organization’s website,  nationalserroscotty.org  (you can also find other classic trailer groups like Airstream and Shasta). If you purchase a used travel trailer, take a friend to help check the trailer’s mechanical systems, underside, and the like for signs of damage or age-related challenges.

Moscow declares emergency in area attacked by Ukraine; Russian strike on shopping mall kills 14

Emergency workers search for victims after Russian missile hit a supermarket in Ukraine.

Russia declared a “federal-level” emergency in the Kursk region after a large-scale incursion from Ukraine and sent reinforcements there Friday, four days after hundreds of Ukrainian troops poured across the border in what appeared to be Kyiv’s biggest attack on Russian soil since the war began.

Meanwhile, a Russian plane-launched missile slammed into a Ukrainian shopping mall in the middle of the day, killing at least 14 people and wounding 44 others, authorities said.

The mall in Kostiantynivka, in the eastern Donetsk region, is in the town’s residential area. Thick black smoke rose above it after the strike.

“This is another targeted attack on a crowded place, another act of terror by the Russians,” Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said in a Telegram post.

It was the second major strike on the town in almost a year. Last September, a Russian missile hit an outdoor market there, killing 17.

July saw the heaviest civilian casualties in Ukraine since October 2022, the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said Friday. Conflict-related violence killed at least 219 civilians and injured 1,018 in July, the mission said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said reinforcements were on their way to the Kursk region to counter Ukraine’s raid. Russia is deploying rocket launchers, towed artillery guns, tanks transported on trailers, and heavy tracked vehicles, the RIA-Novosti news agency said, citing the Defense Ministry.

“The operational situation in the Kursk region remains difficult,” Kursk acting Gov. Alexei Smirnov said on Telegram.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported fighting in the western outskirts of Sudzha, about six miles from the border. The town has an important pipeline transit hub for Russian natural gas.

Social services and civic associations are providing assistance to people forced to flee their homes by the fighting, he said. The last Russian figure for evacuations in Kursk was 3,000.

Putin calls Ukrainian incursion into southwest Russia a ‘large-scale provocation’

Putin accuses Ukraine of incursion into Russia as his officials say cross-border raids continue. Russia’s claims could not be verified and Ukraine’s government isn’t commenting.

Aug. 7, 2024

Little reliable information about the surprise Ukrainian operation has emerged, and its strategic aims are unclear. Ukrainian officials have refused to comment specifically about the incursion, which is taking place about 320 miles southwest of Moscow.

But a top advisor to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that border region attacks will cause Russia to “start to realize that the war is slowly creeping inside of Russian territory.” Myhailo Podolyak also suggested that the operation would improve Kyiv’s hand in the event of negotiations with Moscow.

Asked about Ukraine’s incursion, White House national security spokesman John F. Kirby said Friday that the U.S. was “in touch with our Ukrainian counterparts” but that he would not comment until “those conversations are complete.”

“There’s been no changes in our policy approaches,” Kirby said when asked if there had been a change in U.S. policy on use of weapons. “They’re using it in an area where we had said before that they could use U.S. weapons for cross-border strikes. The end goal here is to help Ukraine defend itself.”

Mathieu Boulègue, a defense analyst at the Chatham House think tank in London, said the Ukrainians appear to have a clear goal in mind.

“Such a coordinated ground force movement responds to a clear military objective, yet unknown, that requires extreme operational security,” Boulègue said in a telephone interview.

The raid spooks the Russian public and delivers a slap in the face to Russian President Vladimir Putin, offering Ukraine “a great PR coup,” he said.

The attack “is a massive symbol, a massive display of force [showing] that the war is not frozen, the war is coming to you,” he said.

The assault came as the Ukrainian army toils to hold at bay an intense Russian push at places on the front line in eastern Ukraine, especially in the Donetsk region. Putin has made clear he wants to capture the parts of Donetsk that the Kremlin’s forces don’t already occupy.

Russia declares federal-level emergencies when there are more than 500 victims or damage exceeds 500 million rubles, equivalent to about $6 million.

The Kursk fighting has earned considerable attention in Russian media, at the top of news websites and state television news broadcasts.

State TV channel Rossiya-1 devoted its first 10 minutes of its 11 a.m. newscast Friday to various aspects of the situation. There wasn’t any reporting from the front, but the newscast led with video from the Russian Defense Ministry purportedly showing the destruction of Ukrainian military vehicles.

Much of the coverage was about the humanitarian situation — children being taken to shelters aboard buses, and people in other regions gathering food, diapers and other supplies to be sent to Kursk.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, says Ukrainian forces have pressed on with their “rapid advances” deeper into the Kursk region, reportedly going up to 20 miles beyond the border.

“The lack of a coherent Russian response to the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk … and the reported rate of Ukrainian advance indicates that Ukrainian forces were able to achieve operational surprise,” the Washington-based institute said late Thursday.

A Russian Defense Ministry statement Friday said only that the military “continues to repel the attempted invasion” and is responding with airstrikes, artillery and troops on the ground.

Ukraine has also kept up its strategy of hitting rear areas with long-range drones, targeting military sites, oil refineries and other infrastructure. Ukrainian drones attacked an airfield in Russia’s Lipetsk region, about 180 miles from the Ukraine border, on Thursday night, authorities said.

Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed the drone strike on Lipetsk-2 airfield Friday morning, saying it was used as a base for fighter jets. The Russian Defense Ministry said 75 Ukrainian drones were shot down, 19 of them over Lipetsk.
