Camp Exchange USA

Summer Camp in the United States is a way of life. Over a million children a year in a America attend a camp and in South Africa we look for young councilors who are keen to travel to America for the summer to work with kids, teach a sport or an activity. Most people who go to camp say it is the greatest job you will ever have because you are paid to do a hobby or sport you love.  So if you like children and have a sport or skill you love doing and are happy to teach it to children, then camp is for you.

Eligibility

  • Interested applicants must be between the ages of 19-27
  • Must have experience with children, not necessarily as a form of profession but a profession related to fields of teaching, coach and youth/social worker is an advantage. In general have a set of skill to offer to children.
  • Must be South African, or have a valid visa to be in South Africa
  • Prepared to work hard and commit to the conditions and cultures set for camp and America as a country.

Duration and Start Dates

  • Program applications are open year around.
  • It takes a minimum of 2-3 months to place candidates and process everything needed for the visa program.
  • The program is a minimum of 9 weeks. It is best to APPLY EARLY.

The Visa classed used for this program is the J1 exchange Visa.

After you have completed your program, you have a 30 day grace period in which you may travel America.

During your employment at the summer camp, you will earn a minimum if $950 for the while duration of your contact. The location that your camp can be varies as there are over 12 000 Summer Camps in America and any one of them can select you to offer a position.

It is a requirement that all flight details are handled by Awesome Travel through our flight department. This includes the free flight change that is offered with the ticket of which you can request day of when you would like to change the flight to and we will aim for the closest date possible if not the exact date.

As a camp councilor, in your position you would be in charge of setting up and managing a program/activity schedule that is in line with your activity, be it archery, rock climbing, swimming or even boating.

The skills that are required at camp do not need to be professional or qualified. As long as you have experience in the skill, confidence and are willing to lead your activity with children then that is all that is needed.

  • One night accommodation at Meet & Greet site upon US arrival if chosen by your camp
  • Ground transportation information and assistance upon arrival to the US to Meet & Greet (if chosen by your camp) or your camp’s pick-up point. All transfer costs associated with transport to Meet & Greet are the responsibility of the applicant
  • Information and guidance to camp pick-up location
  • 24/7 support in U.S. by CIEE
  • CIEE Insurance coverage throughout program from arrival in U.S. to program end date
  • Pocket money from camp upon completion of contract
  • Up to 30 days of travel anywhere in the U.S. after successful completion of camp contract

  • It takes between 4-6 months to place candidates and process everything needed for the visa program.

  • After training completion, you’re granted a 30 day grace period to travel and explore America.

  • Must have post high school studies in any chosen field and have experience within the chosen field.
  • Must be South African citizen
  • Must be mature enough to travel to a country on your own and mange things like work, housing and other day to day challenges.
  • The program allows the visa holder to arrive in New Zealand and have 365 days to stay and work in the country on the program form that day.
  • Visa application can take about a month.
  • THERE IN NO NEED TO HAVE A JOB LINED UP BEFORE YOU LEAVE.   
  • The visa is valid for 1 full year.
  • You can work in any field.
  • You can work as much as you like or you don’t have to work and can just travel (if you have the cash).

Chantal Gouws, general manager at Flight Centre Independent (FCI), says: "We're seeing a marked increase in requests for specialised itineraries. From marine conservation expeditions along the Wild Coast to mindfulness retreats in the Drakensberg, travellers are looking for holidays that reflect their passions."

This trend is not isolated to South Africa. Globally, the adventure tourism market, valued at $366.7bn in 2022, is projected to reach $4.6t by 2032, according to Allied Market Research. Meanwhile, wellness tourism and sustainable travel are also gaining traction, with the global wellness tourism market expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.8% from 2023 to 2030, as reported by Grand View Research.
