Quite simply, there’s nothing like Miami. It’s a culturally diverse city with obvious Latin American influences everywhere, incredible weather (especially in the winter time), gorgeous beaches and skyline, a great culinary scene, dazzling nightlife, and of course, South Beach. Fortunately, Miami’s golf scene is as unique as the city’s culture, which is why we’re ranking the 10 best public golf courses in Miami.

Miami is also much different than the rest of South Florida, places like Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach, for example. Miami is more like New York. It never sleeps. You’d have to travel a little farther north to run into the retirement communities, where life is a little slower, and maybe a little more laid back.

I’ve always enjoyed my trips to Miami, whether it was catching a Dolphins game back in the old days at the Orange Bowl, or checking out the golf scene.

So if you don’t want to battle the traffic up I-95 or the Florida Turnpike and drive an hour or more, there are some public gems right in the Miami area. In fact, if you’re flying into Miami International Airport, you don’t even need a car if you book a few days at Trump National Doral, which is right next door. The resort offers four high-quality golf courses, all of which have been renovated in recent years. And three of those courses are among our top 10 in the Miami area, including the top course, Doral’s famous Blue Monster Course.

Take a look at our top 10 public golf courses in Miami.

  • Trump National Doral Golf Club: The Blue Monster Course
  • Biltmore Golf Course
  • Trump National Doral Golf Club: The Golden Palm Course
  • JW Marriott Turnberry Resort & Spa: The Soffer Course
  • Trump National Doral Golf Club: The Red Tiger Course
  • Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne
  • Normandy Shores Golf Club
  • Miami Beach Golf Club
  • Pembroke Lakes Golf & Racquet Club
  • Country Club of Miami: West Course

1. Trump National Doral Golf Club: The Blue Monster Course

  • SOURCE David Cannon

Blue Monster Location: Miami, Florida Yardage:  7,450 (Par 72) Rating:  74.5 | Slope:  130 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Raymond Floyd, Jerry Pate, Greg Norman; (R) Gil Hanse Opened: 1961

This former site of the Doral Open on the PGA Tour and World Golf Championships has always been a fan favorite. The bruising long, par-4 finishing hole has been ranked among the best 100 holes in the world by at least one major publication, and the course, originally designed Dick Wilson, is even better after a 2105 renovation by one of the hottest architects on the planet, Gil Hanse. The renovations included some lengthening, and moving the bunkers to make it tougher on the modern player.

It’s called The Blue Monster, of course, because of all the water on the majority of holes with some large lakes that run alongside both the fairways and the greens. The 18th is one of those. It’s a slight dogleg left with a lake that comes into play both off the tee and the approach to the green. Australian Craig Perry famously holed out his approach shot for eagle to win the 2004 Ford Championship at Doral in a playoff.

Of course, the Blue Monster is just one of the courses at this resort that former President Donald Trump purchased out of bankruptcy in 2012 for a reported $150 million. While Trump Doral and the Blue Monster lost the WGC event in 2016, it is currently the host course for the LIV Golf Invitational Miami.

It should also be noted that Trump National Doral has terrific practice facilities about five times the size they used to be, and lighted as well, and is also home to the Rick Smith Golf Performance Center.

2. Biltmore Golf Course

Biltmore Golf Course Location: Coral Gables, Florida Yardage:  6,800 (Par 71) Rating:  74.3 | Slope:  132 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Donald Ross Opened: 1926

Anytime you can play an authentic Donald Ross course, it’s a real treat, and the Biltmore Golf Course is a great example of that. Restored by Brian Silva about a decade or so ago, the course is a gorgeous test of golf, located in Coral Gables just outside of Miami.

Off the tee, it’s not that difficult, but water often comes into play, and the Ross greens are Ross greens, which means they have plenty of slope, so stay beneath the hole whenever possible. The Biltmore Golf Course is also the headquarters of the famed Jim McLean Golf School.

The golf course is laid out around the historic Biltmore Hotel, with its incredible Mediterranean architecture, lavish gardens, and spiraling Moorish Giralda Tower.

3. Trump National Doral Golf Club: The Golden Palm Course

Golden Palm Location: Miami, Florida Yardage:  6,602 (Par 70) Rating:  73.3 | Slope:  129 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Ray Floyd/Jerry Pate/Greg Norman/Gil Hanse Opened: 1967

Like The Blue Monster and The Red Tiger at Trump Doral, Golden Palm was also resurrected by Hanse, and it’s a great test of golf with open and tight holes, plenty of water, and bunkers cut tightly in the front with rough behind them.

The best policy is to avoid the water, bunkers and Golden Palms for which the course is named. The greens also have plenty of undulation to challenge your short game and putting.

The bottom line, though, is that this is a championship test, nearly as tough as The Blue Monster. It starts with a fairly benign par-4 that plays nearly 500 yards from the tips, and ends with the course’s signature hole, the 469-yard par-4 18th. The latter is a beauty with a cluster of three fairway bunkers on the right and an island green that fortunately slopes back to front to help hold your approach shots.

4. JW Marriott Turnberry Resort & Spa: Soffer Course

Soffer Course Location: Aventura, Florida Yardage:  7,047 (Par 71) Rating:  74.9 | Slope:  149 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Robert Trent Jones Opened: 1971

The longest and more championship layout of the two courses at the Turnberry Isle and Country Club, the Soffer Course has hosted quite a few LPGA Tour events since it opened in 1971. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and renovated in 2007 under the direction of former tour player Ray Floyd, the otherwise private course is accessible to guests of the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort Resort & Spa, which is located just north of North Miami.

The course can be stretched to more than 7,000 yards, and is 600 yards longer than the other layout at Turnberry Isle, the Miller Course.

Named after South Florida developer Donald Soffer, the signature hole is arguably the 571-yard, par-5 finisher, which ends with an island green and a large waterfall.

5. Trump National Doral Golf Club: Red Tiger

Red Tiger Location: Miami, Florida Yardage:  6,395 (Par 70) Rating:  70.2 | Slope:  121 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Raymond Floyd/Jerry Pate/Greg Norman Opened: 1962

Again, Hanse put his stamp on another Trump Doral course, this time the wonderful Robert von Hagge layout that first opened in 1964 and has now become a favorite at Doral for many regular players and guests.

The Red Tiger Course – which got its name from the late Jackie Gleason because of how difficult it played for him – received the most dramatic facelift of any of the courses at Doral. With water on 17 holes, plenty of mounding, and small, undulated greens protected by white sand bunkers, it’s still a tough test, but way more beautiful than it used to be.

The hole variety is outstanding with lots of highlights. The par-5 10th, for example, requires a long uphill tee shot and difficult layup to set up what’s hopefully a wedge to a green fronted by water. The par-3 16th sets up nicely for players who can draw the ball since the water is mostly left and in front of the green. And the par-5 18th features water on both sides of the fairway as well as behind the green.

6. Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne

Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne

Crandon Golf Location: Key Biscayne, Florida Yardage:  7,180 (Par 72) Rating:  75.4 | Slope:  129 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Bruce Devlin/Robert von Hagge Opened: 1972

Certainly, the best municipal course in Miami, Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne was built on an incredible setting with seven saltwater lakes, views of Biscayne Bay as well as the Miami skyline.

One of the better designs by Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin, the layout works its way around mangroves, palm trees, and the aforementioned lakes with plenty of wildlife such as crocodiles, herons, white ibises, pelicans, and large, colorful iguanas. First opened in 1972, the course underwent an extensive renovation in 1993 by von Hagge and played host to a PGA Tour Champions event from 1987 to 2004.

7. Normandy Shores Golf Club

Normandy Shores

  • DESCRIPTION Normandy Shores
  • SOURCE DANIEL SLIM

Normandy Shores Location: Miami Beach, Florida Yardage:  6,805 (Par 71) Rating:  72.5 | Slope:  129 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  William S. Flynn/Howard C. Toomey/(R) Arthur Hills Opened: 1928

Going all the way back to 1928, Normandy Shores Golf Club has a storied past that includes a stint as a U.S. Army training post during World War II, a subsequent renovation, and regular players that included the likes of Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Peter Thompson.

In 2007, however, architect Arthur Hills redid the course, and it’s been a Miami area favorite ever since. Located on an island that was dredged up back in the day, Hills’ team installed paspalum fairways, rebuilt the greens, restored the lakes, and added new irrigation and drainage. Today, the course co-hosts the South Beach International Amateur every year. Signature holes include the 240-yard par-3 17th that’s protected by water, trees, and bunkers.

8. Miami Beach Golf Club

Miami Beach GC Location: Miami Beach, Florida Yardage:  6,903 (Par 72) Rating:  73.0 | Slope:  127 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Bruce Devlin/Robert von Hagge/(R) Arthur Hills Opened: 1923

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach Golf Club is just a few miles from South Beach. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s always in good shape, the layout is super interesting, and the scenery is terrific.

With a history that dates back over a century, the course got an $11 million renovation a little more than 20 years ago by Hills. The work included elevating the greens, new bunkering and turf. There’s plenty of water that comes into play as well, with several lakes and ponds. And the small undulating greens are certainly challenging.

9. Pembroke Lakes Golf & Racquet Club

Pembroke Lakes Location: Pembroke Pines, Florida Yardage:  6,555 (Par 72) Rating:  71.1 | Slope:  126 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Howard Watson/John Watson/(R) John Sanford/Dana Quigley Opened: 1969

Owned by the city of Pembroke Pines, this is certainly one of the best municipals in the area. Opened in 1969, it underwent a $7 million renovation in 2007.

Though the course tops out at just over 6,800 yards, it will challenge all levels of players. Best of all, it’s always in good shape, featuring Paspalum Supreme turf on the fairways, coquina waste bunkers, and an extensive practice area that includes a chipping green, practice bunker, grass range and a large putting green. There is also plenty of water that comes into play, regardless of which of the six sets of tees you choose to play.

In addition to the course, there are 14 tennis courts, including five that are clay, as well as the Club Nineteen Restaurant.

10. Country Club of Miami: West Course

CC of Miami: West Location: Hialeah, Florida Yardage:  7,017 (Par 72) Rating:  74.0 | Slope:  132 Driving Range: Yes Architect:  Robert Trent Jones Opened: 1959

If you want a little Miami golf nostalgia, head over to the Country Club of Miami, once an exclusive private club where some pretty famous folks used to play golf.

Now a Miami municipal, it used to be home of the Eastern Open on the PGA Tour. And Gleason, who had a home there, often played at the Country Club of Miami and invited his celebrity friends like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby to join him. None other than Arnold Palmer was the club’s first head pro.

There are 36 holes divided between the West and the East Courses. The West is longer at more than 7,000 yards and played host to PGA Tour Champions Qualifying School in 1991. Both, which were designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., have been renovated and reconfigured over the years.

Other Public Courses in Miami to Consider

We could have easily made an argument for the fourth Trump National Doral layout, The Silver Fox Course, which used to be called the Jim McLean Course. It’s very different from the other three, and there’s an island green on the 14th.

The truth is while there’s nothing like Miami in terms of culture and vibe, public golf in the area is somewhat limited.

If you are willing to go north a bit, there’s a lot of quality resort and public golf that includes spots like PGA National Resort & Spa with its six courses in Palm Beach Gardens, PGA Golf Club and its three championship courses and incredible practice facilities in Port St. Lucie, The Breakers Jones Course in West Palm Beach, and The Park in West Palm Beach. The Park is a sensational redo by Hanse and company of the former West Palm Beach Golf Course. It opened in 2023 and also includes a lighted par-3 course.

Also well worth driving a bit is one of my favorite short courses in the country. The Palm Beach Par 3, an all-paspalum layout right on the ocean in West Palm, was renovated by Ray Floyd and features lots of holes with Atlantic views. The price has gone up a bit over the years, but I still think it’s worth the $67 fee to walk considering the location. The Al Fresco Italian Restaurant in the clubhouse is sensational, both for its views from the veranda and the menu.

Best Golf Courses in Miami

Priscilla Blossom

LAST UPDATED BY Priscilla Blossom March 15, 2022

Florida has long been a year-round prime destination for golfers. Our sunny skies and warm climates are great for spending plenty of time outdoors. Miami also happens to be the home of a great many golf courses, not to mention plenty of quality dining and entertainment to make it a hotspot for snowbirds and other wanderers.

In this list, we've gone out of our way to include a wide variety of greens for folks to choose from. We have some of the highest caliber courses, challenging ones and others that are a bit better for beginners. We don't want to scare away newbies, but we also don't want to alienate the more serious golfers in the bunch.

We've listed private golf courses like the one at La Gorce Country Club , a place so prestigious you need an invitation to even apply for membership. We've also opted to include plenty of public golf courses, like Crandon Golf right on the bay, and Palmetto Golf Course for our friends in South Dade. No matter how often you golf, you'll find the right range for you in the list below.

Greynolds Golf Course

Greynolds Golf Course

Certainly one of the newer golf courses in Miami (as many others on this list opened pre-WWII), Greynolds began greeting golfers back in the mid-1960s. This public, 9-hole, the par-36 course boasts a much more laid-back aesthetic, a plus for anyone new to the sport. Another perk? It's certainly much easier on the wallet at just $25 per player (which includes a golf cart, or $12 if you feel like walking). Golf instruction is also available here, though you'll have to call for details. And they've also got FootGolf here, which combines soccer and golf to make a new and wholly interesting sport.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : Greynolds may not have the prestige of some private courses on this list, but it's the people's golf course and we love its accessibility.

Priscilla's expert tip : Look up the Miami-Dade Golf Patron Membership, which will grant you deep-discounts to a number of public courses (including this one) for one low price, plus a number of other perks, including a free round!

Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club

Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club

If you're serious about your golf game and happen to be in Miami, there's no way you can miss out on playing at the Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club. This private, Arnold Palmer signature golf course has recently been renovated and enjoys the status of one of Miami's most prestigious clubs. It's a visually stunning place, both on the course and throughout the country club. Enjoy the South Floridian wildlife and mangroves that surround the course. Then, after your game (or lesson, as those are also available), enjoy an unforgettable meal in their 30,000 square foot clubhouse where crabcakes and chopped steak are the norm. Don't forget to stop by the wine cellar at the end of your day for a quality glass of red or white.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : Deering Bay has one of Miami's most aesthetically-pleasing golf courses, making it a great place to tee off and relax all at once.

Priscilla's expert tip : Make a day of it and explore other nearby attractions like the Deering Estate after your game.

Normandy Shores Golf Club

Normandy Shores Golf Club

Over on the north side of Miami Beach, you'll find spectacularly cared-for greens, excellent service, and an all-around enjoyable experience at the Normandy Shores Golf Club. Open in 1928, Normandy Shores used to be a regular hotspot for hotshots like Arnold Palmer and Peter Thompson. More recently, it's served as the home for the Inaugural South Beach International Amateur. Locals are especially loyal to Normandy with their deep-discounts for Miami Beach residents. They also offer free youth golf clinics and free days for kids to play (with a paying adult), making them one of the most family-friendly courses in town.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : With their kid-friendly attitude, Normandy Shores is gets our respect for being a quality course that looks out for the locals.

Priscilla's expert tip : Check their website or call ahead to find out when their free youth clinics occur so you can introduce your little ones to the sport!

Miami Beach Golf Course

Miami Beach Golf Course

It doesn't get much better than golfing on South Beach. The cool ocean breeze, the sway of palm trees...it's enough to inspire anyone to be out on the green all day long. That's exactly what it's like to enjoy 18 holes at the Miami Beach Golf Club. This public course opened in 1923 as the Bayshore Golf Course and has enjoyed quite an interesting history. During World War II, it was rented out by the U.S. Army and used to train soldiers for war. Sometime later, it was almost completely destroyed and paved over for new housing, but the city opted to buy the land and keep the course intact. These days, locals and tourists alike enjoy its challenging fairways, many of which involve water (or rather, staying out of the water).

Recommended for Golf Courses because : Miami Beach Golf Course has been a top choice for SoBe residents for decades and we're not about to question that.

Priscilla's expert tip : If you're planning to drive or fly into Miami Beach for the golfing, you may want to check your travel dates. Spring break and long weekends like Memorial Day and Labor Day get especially busy and make it hard to get around town.

PGA National Golf Courses

PGA National Golf Courses

Palm Beach Gardens is a haven for golfers, and they all know to take their clubs over to the PGA National Resort and Spa. This luxury resort is home to five championship golf courses that are an absolute dream to play on. What's more, they also host the PGA Tour's Honda Classic and the Bear Trap. Of course, you don't have to be much of a golfer to stay here as there's plenty more to enjoy. Try enjoying a game at the sports and racquet club, or make it a day of pampering at the 40,000 square foot European spa.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : This PGA Tour stop course is home to the infamous "Bear Trap" and has plenty of additional perks on-site to make it a worthy destination.

Priscilla's expert tip : Solid choice for golfers who are also pet lovers, your furry friends are welcome here.

Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne

Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne

Crandon Golf is an 18-hole, par-72 course that has hosted a number of national PGA events. This well-kept golf course is entirely scenic and features mangroves, saltwater lakes, and of course, perfect views of Biscayne Bay. Despite its beauty, it's also an entirely affordable spot for locals to whack a few balls. Crandon has putting greens, a driving range, and a stellar pro shop for those who need it. If you're still new to the game, rent your equipment here if you like, and then take some pro lessons to make the most of your swing. It's also home to the Junior Golf Summer Camp, where aspiring Arnold Palmers can truly get good at the game.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : No other golf course in Miami has views of the bay like Crandon Golf. Add the fact that it's public, and you'll get it.

La Gorce Country Club

La Gorce Country Club

La Gorce is one of the top-rated golf courses in town, and certainly one of the most exclusive. Membership to this prestigious country club is by invitation only, but once you're in, you know you've made it. The golf course itself is as pristine as you might imagine. Its location off Alton Road allows for inspiring views of Miami Beach's skyline as well as just enough ocean air to keep you refreshed even on the warmest of days. For true lovers of the game, you might be impressed to play on the same fairways as Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. For the rest, there's a number of additional amenities to enjoy onsite, including tennis courts, a croquet lawn, and an excellent clubhouse that offers perks like complimentary breakfasts and snacks.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : Exclusivity often has its perks, and if you're lucky enough to join La Gorce, you'll quickly understand why it's so highly rated and respected.

Priscilla's expert tip : Make friends with someone you know is a member. It might be the only way you'll ever set foot in here.

Miami Shores Country Club

Miami Shores Country Club

Miamians are a lucky bunch. They get to enjoy a number of public golf courses. Take the one located at the historic Miami Shores Country Club, for example. Open since 1939, it's conveniently located roughly 15 minutes from the airport, downtown, and the beach, depending on what direction you're headed. This wide-open course features a driving range, a chipping green, and a putting green, plus a top-notch clubhouse where you can host all kinds of events. The 18-hole course is great whether you're just going on a solo outing or want to partake in a small tournament. Recommended for Golf Courses because : Their 18-hole championship course, complete with professional staff and impeccably kept greens allow for us to give this country club a top spot.

Priscilla's expert tip : Check their website for tee time specifics and South Florida resident discounts to save an extra few bucks.

The Soffer Golf Course at Turnberry Isle Miami

The Soffer Golf Course at Turnberry Isle Miami

The golf course at Turnberry Isle, Miami was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones senior and later re-imagined by Raymond Floyd. Key features include beautifully landscaped holes on lush green velvet fairways, an island green on the 18th hole with a signature waterfall. It's a favorite on the resort circuit as the variety of tee box locations ensures that all players can enjoy golfing on this pretty course without feeling defeated by the length while scratch golfers will appreciate the challenging water hazards and the shaping of shots required to navigate some fairly narrow fairways. The greens are in top condition and roll true.

Recommended for Golf Courses because : 36 holes, electric carts (with GPS), high-caliber caddies and more make the course at Turnberry worth the trip.

Priscilla's expert tip : On the 9th hole, avoid the temptation to cut the corner over water. A straight drive will be rewarded with a generous landing area and an easy chip onto the green for par or birdie.

The Biltmore Hotel Spa and Golf

Costa Del Sol Golf Club (Doral)

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Costa del Sol Golf Club ⛳️ (@cdsgolfclub)

Costa Del Sol Golf Club is where you challenge your game without breaking the bank. Nestled in Doral, this course offers a mix of approachable holes and a few that will test your mettle. It’s the kind of place where you can try that risky shot without the fear of judgment. The real charm of Costa Del Sol lies in its unpretentious vibe; it’s golf without the frills, focused on the love of the game. And when you’re done, the 19th hole offers a friendly spot to recount your triumphs and mishaps.

Palmetto Golf Course (Miami)

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Palmetto Golf Club (@palmetto_golf_club)

Palmetto Golf Course is the everyman’s green, where the spirit of public golf is alive and well. It’s affordable, well-maintained, and most importantly, fun. The course layout is forgiving, making it a great spot for beginners or a relaxed round with friends. But don’t let its laid-back nature fool you; there are challenges to be had, especially when the wind picks up. Palmetto is proof that golf doesn’t need to be exclusive to be enjoyable. It’s the game at its most democratic, and isn’t that what public golf is all about?

Greynolds Golf Course (North Miami Beach)

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Fotis Papamichael (@fotispapa)

Greynolds Golf Course offers a slice of tranquility in the bustling heart of North Miami Beach. This 9-hole course is perfect for a quick round that still tests your skills. With its mature trees and peaceful setting, it feels like a step back to a simpler time. Greynolds is the antidote to the fast-paced world outside its boundaries, a place where you can slow down and savor the game. It’s golf as it was meant to be: simple, accessible, and utterly enjoyable.

Briar Bay Golf Course (Miami)

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by N. (@ona_nadin)

Briar Bay Golf Course is a testament to the joy of the game. This executive course might be short, but it packs a punch with its variety and layout. It’s the perfect place for a quick round that still delivers the full golf experience. The course is impeccably maintained, with greens that invite accurate putting and fairways that challenge your precision. Briar Bay is a reminder that great golf doesn’t always come with 18 holes. Sometimes, all you need is a well-crafted 9 to capture the essence of the game.

Miami’s golf courses are as diverse and inviting as the city itself. Each course tells a story, offers a challenge, and provides a backdrop for unforgettable memories. Whether you’re seeking the thrill of conquering the Blue Monster or the peace of a round at Greynolds, Miami’s greens are waiting. So, what are you waiting for? The fairways are calling, and adventure awaits at every tee.

Deal sealed between Disney and Disney World governing district with approval by DeSantis reps

Updated on: June 13, 2024 / 5:07 PM EDT / AP

Orlando, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis' appointees on Wednesday gave final approval to an agreement that buries the hatchet between Disney and the governing district for Walt Disney World, which the Florida governor took over after the company two years ago publicly opposed a state law critics dubbed "Don't Say Gay."

The five DeSantis-appointed board members to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District unanimously voted to approve a 15-year development deal in which the district committed to making infrastructure improvements in exchange for Disney investing up to $17 billion into Disney World over the next two decades.

The agreement followed a detente in March in which both sides agreed to stop litigating against each other in state court and work toward negotiating a new development agreement and a new comprehensive plan no later than next year. The district provides municipal services such as firefighting, planning and mosquito control, among other things, and was controlled by Disney supporters before the takeover by the DeSantis appointees.

District board member Brian Aungst said at Wednesday night's board meeting that the agreement provides a lasting and stable framework for Disney and the board to work together.

"This is the day we all have been looking forward to," Aungst said. "I was always extremely optimistic and knew we would get here because it was the right outcome."

Disney DeSantis

Terms of the accord

Under the deal, Disney will be required to donate up to 100 acres of Disney World's 24,000 acres for the construction of infrastructure projects controlled by the district. The company also will need to award at least half of its construction projects to companies based in Florida and spend at least $10 million on affordable housing for central Florida.

Disney would then be approved to build a fifth major theme park at Disney World and two more minor parks, such as water parks, if it desired. The company could raise the number of hotel rooms on its property from almost 40,000 to more than 53,000 and increase the amount of retail and restaurant space by more than 20%. Disney will retain control of building heights due to its need to maintain an immersive environment.

Leaders of Orlando's tourism industry praised the agreement, telling the district's board members that it will bring boundless jobs, tourists and attention to central Florida.

"It very clearly demonstrates to the world that the district and Disney are eager to resume working together for the great state of Florida," said Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood International, Inc.

In a statement from DeSantis' office, communications director Bryan Griffin said: "Disney and the state of Florida continue working well together under [Central Florida Tourism Oversight District's] new governance structure, and we are pleased to see CFTOD and Disney reach a new development agreement that secures up to $17 billion in future investment in the state of Florida. This agreement is a big win for central Florida and will lead to numerous jobs and improved guest experiences."

A remaining legal issue

Still up in the air was an appeal of a federal lawsuit Disney had filed against DeSantis and his appointees. After the settlement was reached in March, Disney asked the appellate court to put that case on hold while the development agreement was negotiated. The company has until next week to file a brief with the court if it wants to move ahead with the case.

Disney didn't respond to an email Wednesday afternoon seeking comment on how the company planned to proceed. The DeSantis appointees to the district had planned to hold a closed-door discussion about the lawsuit after their board meeting Wednesday but cancelled that meeting.

Matthew Oberly, a spokesperson for the district, said Wednesday night that the district didn't have any comment on the future of the federal litigation.

The March settlement ended almost two years of litigation sparked by DeSantis' takeover of the district following the company's opposition to the 2022 law that bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades. The law was championed by the Republican governor, who used Disney as a punching bag in speeches during his run for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination until he suspended his campaign earlier this year.

As punishment for Disney's opposition to the controversial law, DeSantis took over the governing district through legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature and appointed a new board of supervisors. Disney sued DeSantis and his appointees, claiming the company's free speech rights were violated for speaking out against the legislation. A federal judge dismissed that lawsuit in January, but Disney appealed.

Before control of the district changed hands early last year, the Disney supporters on its board signed agreements with the company shifting control over design and construction at Disney World to the company. The new DeSantis appointees claimed the "eleventh-hour deals" neutered their powers, and the district sued the company in state court in Orlando to have the contracts voided.

Disney filed counterclaims that included asking the state court to declare the agreements valid and enforceable. Those state court lawsuits were dismissed as part of the March settlement.

This florida golf haven is getting another course (with high-profile owners), which one official calls 'first-rate', share this article.

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — Add one more golf course to an already large number in one of the country’s golf capitals. And the course’s ownership group has some high-profile names.

County commissioners on Tuesday approved the final site plan for Phase 2 of Three Lakes Golf Club where another 18-hole course is expected to be built. Two courses were part of Phase 1, according to county records. The are sits just west of Jupiter and Hobe Sound, where a number of PGA Tour pros currently reside.

“It is a first-rate project,” said Commissioner Ed Ciampi before the vote, which carried by a 4-1 margin. Commissioner Sarah Heard dissented without giving a reason.

The developer protected as many trees as possible in their original locations and many others the developer saved and relocated, Ciampi added.

Among those in the club’s ownership group are former USGA CEO Mike Davis, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, course architect Tom Fazio II and former LPGA player Lynn Connelly. The group is also involved in the Apogee Club, which is currently under construction just a few miles away.

“They will be a large employer,” he said, and will be a large contributor to local charities.

Land use attorney Bob Raynes Jr., representing the developer, declined to comment after the vote, saying he was unauthorized to do so.

Project details

The 282-acre site for the project will include the new golf course, called the North Course, eight golf cottages for short-term and weekend stays, a performance center, golf training center and maintenance building.

Three Lakes Golf Club is a private club on 1,217 acres located at 3535 Southwest Kanner Highway in unincorporated Martin County north of Southwest Bridge Road, according to county records.  It’s unclear if any of the facilities will be open to the public. No homes are located on the property.

More than 28 golf courses are located in Martin County, according to the tourism and marketing office.

Rural lifestyle

In February, county officials changed the land-use designation for the golf club to the controversial rural lifestyle designation, county planner Brian Elam told commissioners.

The rural lifestyle designation has been controversial because it allows for more intense development in places like western agricultural lands.

Opponents of the designation feel it will kill the Martin County difference, which has meant limited growth.

County staff recommended that commissioners approve the Phase 2 final site plan. No one from the public commented on the proposal.

This legendary Bandon Dunes event is for golf sickos only

Golfers are playing 72 holes at Bandon Dunes Tuesday.

Evan Schiller

U.S. Open Qualifying is often referred to by Golf Channel as “Golf’s Longest Day,” but golf’s actual longest day is taking place Tuesday on the southeastern coast of Oregon.

Only this version is less of a grind and more a celebration of the sickest of golf sickos.

While the actual summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the astronomical start of summer, is Thursday, more than 100 golfers at Bandon Dunes are getting the party started early with the 14th annual Bandon Solstice.

Tomorrow is the day! 72 holes of golf during the Bandon Solstice. Rest up now, and we'll see you bright and early in the morning! pic.twitter.com/FSY5i5lL0a — Bandon Dunes (@BandonDunesGolf) June 17, 2024

With first-round tee times starting at 5:25 a.m. PDT (before Tuesday’s official sunrise at Bandon of 5:37 a.m.), each Bandon Solstice player will play 72 holes of golf Tuesday on four of the resort’s five courses.

For this year’s Bandon Solstice, groups are playing Bandon Dunes, Bandon Trails, Old MacDonald and Sheep Ranch, which are all within GOLF’s Top 100 U.S. Courses list. The foursomes each start on different courses, with two waves going off the front and back nines of the Bandon Dunes golf course and work their around the four courses.

The day starts with a breakfast buffet at 4:30 a.m. (!!!) and includes lunch after your second round. You know what they say, nothing hits like the mid-round hot dog, especially when “mid-round” is after your 36th hole of the day.

Groups typically finish all four rounds around 8 to 8:30 p.m., before Tuesday’s sunset of 9 p.m. PT. Perhaps there’s even enough time for players to have an “E9” putting contest on the resort’s Punchbowl putting course. That is if they can still stand of course.

That adds up to a pretty stout pace. For the 2017 Bandon Solstice, the resort said rounds were completed in about a 3-hour-and-15-minute pace.

the par-3 17th hole at bandon trails

All the courses at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, explained

Luckily, players typically don’t carry their own bags. One of the resort’s talented caddies will carry two bags for two rounds and then be replaced. It still ends up being a pretty lucrative day for them as the caddie rate is $100 per bag, per round, plus gratuity.

Think you have the stamina to go four rounds at Bandon in one? It doesn’t come cheap. Prices for this year’s Bandon Solstice were $2,005 per person for a double occupancy room and $2,345 per person for a single occupancy room or a shared two-bedroom loft. That’s in addition to the caddies.

That package comes with two nights of lodging for the night before the event and the night of, a welcome reception and dinner the night before, four rounds of golf for the event, breakfast the morning of the event and the morning after and dinner after the event.

You can register as a twosome or a foursome and as long as person from each foursome fills out a registration, you can enter as many foursomes as you like, you just better do it fast. Last year, registration took place in mid-November and the event was sold out within minutes.

If you do happen to sign up, just remember, this writer, who during his only visit to the resort played just one of the 18-hole golf courses, is available if you need a fourth.

South Florida faces more storms after days of record-breaking rain, flooding

miami golf tourism

Thunderstorms reemerged over rain-soaked South Florida on Thursday, further inundating the region with floodwaters, forcing road closures and disrupting hundreds of flights as a daylong stretch of severe weather rages on.

The storms, which began on Tuesday and are the result of a slow-moving low-pressure system, pummeled South Florida with upwards of 20 inches of rain drenching some areas, according to the National Weather Service . The downpour prompted multiple rescues and urgent warnings of "life-threatening floods" on Wednesday as major travel arteries closed, including a section of Interstate 95; hundreds of flights at several major airports were delayed and canceled.

A tornado with peak winds of 85-95 mph touched down in Hobe Sound, just north of West Palm Beach, and moved 1.7 miles toward Jupiter Island before entering the Atlantic, a survey team with the weather service confirmed . Across Hobe Sound and several nearby coastal communities, the storms toppled power poles, uprooted trees and damaged homes.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency to coordinate and mobilize recovery efforts; the mayors of Fort Lauderdale, Miami and other cities also made emergency declarations. With many roads still under several feet of water, more rain could be dangerous, especially for Collier, Miami-Dade and Broward counties, which includes the cities of Naples, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

"It's been awful," said Peaches Stevenson, a longtime resident of Hollywood, a coastal city between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. On Wednesday, the 44-year-old ventured out with her husband to get some groceries at Winn-Dixie and encountered dozens of flooded roads. Once they reached the parking lot, the couple turned around because it was too flooded to park.

"The rain has been non-stop," said Stevenson, the owner of a local restaurant, The Daily Bread. "It's been flooded here before, but not like this and not so quickly."

On Thursday, meteorologists said 4-8 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts of more than 10 inches was in the forecast. The weather service issued a "high risk" of excessive rainfall advisory for parts of South Florida, including Miami, Naples and Fort Lauderdale, adding: "Locally catastrophic flash flooding is possible."

In a news conference on Thursday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava urged residents to remain cautious and vigilant as the threat of dangerous flooding continues.

“Don’t be deceived by the sun that is peeking out from behind the clouds,” she said. “If you can, stay home or indoors.”

Developments:

∎ At Miami International Airport, more than 200 flights were canceled and 160 were delayed as of 11:30 a.m., according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website . A day earlier, there were 411 delays and 367 cancellations. Delays also impacted Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which had 114 cancellations and 168 delayed flights by Thursday afternoon, according to FlightAware.

∎ Hallandale Beach, a city between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, suspended bus operations and closed all administrative offices and park facilities, citing the incoming storms. Hallandale has been drenched with more rain than any other part of Broward County, with 19.39 inches of rainfall in about a 48-hour period through early Thursday.

∎ State Farm reported it had already received about 300 auto claims associated with the torrential downpours by early Thursday, according to the Palm Beach Post , part of the USA TODAY Network.

Rainfall totals

Below is a list of the rainfall totals recorded by the weather service across South Florida during a 48-hour period that ended early Thursday morning.

  • 25.13 inches, Big Cypress National Preserve
  • 20.43 inches, North Miami
  • 19.39 inches, Hallandale
  • 19.1 inches, Hollywood
  • 17.97 inches, Davie

Storms, confirmed tornado hits Hobe Sound

Paul Feinsinger had just arrived at a home he uses for his accounting business in Hobe Sound – a community along Florida's Treasure Coast – around 10:30 a.m. when he got a tornado warning.

“All of the sudden the wind started blowing, things started banging around,” Feinsinger said . “I got down on the floor and within about 2 or 3 minutes it passed.”

Trees were uprooted in the backyard of the property and screens and windows were blown out. The interior of the office was strewn with paper and office supplies after the storm.

“I’ve been here since 1970, and been through hurricanes and things like that, but there’s nothing like this,” he said. “This is crazy.”

A short walk from Feinsinger’s business, David Anderson stood in front of a damaged home. He runs his landscape company out of it and his mother-in-law lives there. He wasn’t there at the time, but got a call from his alarm company indicating the garage door opened.

“I got here and it was blown in and that's when we found out the roof is dropped on the inside,” Anderson said. “It's leaking all over the place.”

He said parts of his roof are in the backyard, and on the side of the single-story home. No one was hurt, he said, adding that the storm "destroyed the whole nursery behind us."

In Aventura, streets resemble canals

The city of Aventura, about 15 miles north of Miami, declared a state of emergency after dark Wednesday as main streets flooded with waist-high water and roads became littered with abandoned cars, blocking traffic.

As worried parents took to local Facebook groups and WhatsApp chats for suggestions on how to pick up their kids who were stuck at the city's rec center for summer camp, police delivered pizza to keep everyone fed and in good spirits.

"Thank you to our incredible staff who is working overtime to make sure over 140 campers are safe and having fun!" the city posted on Instagram along with videos of the flooding.

Neighbors waded into water during heavy rains to attempt to clear clogged storm drains as high-tide brought surges. Some sent messages in bottles to float around streets that had appeared more like canals in the darkness.

Record-breaking rainfall soaks South Florida

The blitzkrieg of rain started on Tuesday, drenching southwest Florida in a deluge that raised the heights of rivers and flooded the streets of Sarasota, Naples and Fort Myers.

In Sarasota, nearly 4 inches of rain fell in one hour, the most to fall in such a short time since records began in 1972, according to the weather service. In Siesta Key, just south of Sarasota, more than half a foot of rain was recorded. Videos showed residents across the region pushing cars out of floodwaters.

Darryl Dillon, the general manager of Mattison's City Grill in downtown Sarasota, said water crept into the outdoor patio for the first time in a storm that wasn’t a hurricane. “Nobody was out,” Dillon told the Herald-Tribune, part of the USA TODAY Network . “I stepped out of my car into a foot-and-a-half of water.”

While Miami and other parts of southeastern Florida were hit by bands of rain on Tuesday, it wouldn't be until Wednesday that the region would see "life-threatening" floods.

According to preliminary figures, 5-6.5 inches of rain fell per hour in some parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties on Wednesday. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, 6.77 inches of rain was recorded, dashing the record of 5.47 inches recorded in 1978, according to the weather service.

Emergency responders in Miami-Dade County rescued 34 people who were trapped in vehicles and inside homes on Wednesday, said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava at a news conference. In Fort Lauderdale, 60 vehicles were towed from the roadways, the city said in a statement .

The rain forced officials to shut down I-95 in the southbound direction in Fort Lauderdale. After six hours, the interstate, which runs from Miami up the eastern United States to the Canadian border, was reopened.

The foul weather is associated with a tropical disturbance over the state, one that the  National Hurricane Center  is giving a  20% chance of development  into a depression or tropical storm over the next seven days.

Another golf course expected in Martin County following commissioners approval

miami golf tourism

MARTIN COUNTY — Add one more golf course to the number already in the county.

County commissioners on Tuesday approved the final site plan for Phase 2 of Three Lakes Golf Club where another 18-hole course is expected to be built. Two courses were part of Phase 1, according to county records.

"It is a first-rate project," said Commissioner Ed Ciampi before the vote, which carried by a 4-1 margin. Commissioner Sarah Heard dissented without giving a reason.

The developer protected as many trees as possible in their original locations and many others the developer saved and relocated, Ciampi added.

"They will be a large employer," he said, and will be a large contributor to local charities.

Three Lakes Golf Club is a private club on 1,217 acres located at 3535 Southwest Kanner Highway in unincorporated Martin County north of Southwest Bridge Road, according to county records It's unclear if any of the facilities will be open to the public. No homes are located on the property.

More than 28 golf courses are located in Martin County, according to the tourism and marketing office.

Rural lifestyle

In February, county officials changed the land-use designation for the golf club to the controversial rural lifestyle designation, county planner Brian Elam told commissioners.

More: Development is always a hot topic on Treasure Coast, but will that matter on Election Day?

More: Change comes to Martin County's rural-lifestyle land use, and 3,900-acre project gets OK

Travis Scott arrested in Miami after 'yelling,' becoming 'erratic': Police

He was arrested for trespassing and disorderly intoxication.

Superstar rapper Travis Scott was arrested early Thursday in Miami on charges of disorderly intoxication and trespassing, according to jail records.

Scott, whose real name is Jacques Bermon Webster, was booked at 4:35 a.m. local time, according to jail records. Jail records also note that he submitted a bond of $650 and was released.

The rapper was "yelling obscenities" at someone on a yacht in Miami Beach Marina early Thursday morning and when officers responded they "could sense a strong smell of alcohol" on his breath, according to the Miami Beach Police Department.

The person on the yacht told police he did not want to press charges; he just wanted Scott off the vessel.

Police ordered the rapper to leave the dock or be arrested. As he made his way to the boardwalk, Scott "walked backwards yelling obscenities to the occupants of the vessel," police said.

Scott initially complied with the order to leave the marina but then, five minutes later, returned and walked back toward the boat, police said. Officers ordered him not to go, and that's when police said Scott "began yelling" and became "erratic."

The rapper was taken into custody and, at the station house, told officers he had been drinking and stated "it's Miami," according to the police report.

In response to the misdemeanor charges against him, a written not guilty plea was submitted on Scott's behalf.

The 33-year-old rapper took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after he was released to write simply, "Lol." He also shared a meme of his mugshot, making it appear as if he was wearing earbuds, to his Instagram story.

A source close to Scott told ABC News there was no physical altercation, that it was just a rowdy party, and they did not suspect there would be further action, saying it was "akin to receiving a ticket."

Bradford Cohen, a legal representative for the rapper, said in a statement to ABC News, "Mr. Scott was briefly detained due to a misunderstanding. There was absolutely no physical altercation involved, and we thank the authorities for working with us towards a swift and amicable resolution."

The Grammy-nominated rapper is best known for Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits like "Sicko Mode," "Highest in the Room" and "Franchise."

Scott is father to daughter Stormi, 6, and son Aire, 2, both of whom he shares with ex Kylie Jenner of "The Kardashians" fame.

PHOTO: Travis Scott performs with Cactus Jack during the Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash Festival at SeatGeek Stadium on June 14, 2024 in Bridgeview, Ill.

Scott is set to kick off the European leg of his "Circus Maximus Tour" next week, starting with two performances in the Netherlands on June 28 and June 30.

He is then set to tour all across the continent throughout July and the beginning of August before heading to Brazil on Sept. 13 to perform in the Rock in Rio music festival.

Scott was also involved in a fight at a nightclub where he was performing in New York City on March 1, 2023, with the NYPD issuing an arrest warrant for the star. He allegedly punched a sound engineer who was working at Club Nebula and damaged $12,000 in sound equipment, according to police.

Scott's lawyer, Mitchell Schuster, at the time called it "a misunderstanding being blown out of proportion by clickbait and misinformation." Scott reportedly reached a settlement with the club and was never arrested.
