Poland Summer Mission

Poland is a country rich with culture, history, and faith tradition. Although the country of around 38 million people is one of the most religious in Europe, many Polish people do not have a personal relationship with Christ and are longing for a more genuine and authentic spiritual life. Join us as we partner with Polish Cru staff and students eager to receive Americans to labor alongside them to share the gospel with a country hungry for a more transformative experience with God.

On this Summer Mission we will travel to three major cities in Poland to support and learn from Polish Staff currently serving on several university campuses. You will be developed and equipped to share your faith cross-culturally, given opportunities to encourage Polish college students currently sharing Christ with their campuses, as well as take steps of faith that will help you grow as a leader who can return to your campus in the United States more able to launch spiritual movements and make a lasting impact for the gospel.

Go Trip Details

What is the purpose of this trip?

To learn from and participate in what God is doing in Poland, especially amid the refugee crisis as a result of the war in Ukraine, and to support Stonebriar missionaries in this area of the world.

What will we be doing in Poland?

We have two main mission opportunities on this trip to Poland. Both of our Go Trip teams will fly in and out of the country’s capital, Warsaw. Then…

  • Team Mogilno will drive to Mogilno village to lead an English-learning camp for children and teens, as an outreach in partnership with a local church. This team is essentially hosting a vacation Bible school in English with translators.
  • Team Warsaw will drive to an outlying village to lead a retreat for families, offering the same English-learning camp for the children and teens plus adult programming for their parents. This opportunity is highly relational and geared towards discipleship.

Mission Trip or Pilgrimage to Poland

  • Historical Site
  • Outdoor Adventure

The nation of Poland emerged a thousand years ago, through the age of knights, castles, kingdoms, and conquerors. When WWII erupted, Poland was suddenly a  tragic tale, where the Jewish populace found themselves on the edge of genocide. Today, a testament to survival is found in museums and memorials across the country. Cities like Kraków have preserved their Gothic past and Poland has one of the best collections of amazing medieval castles and churches anywhere in Europe.

Poland is known for its heart-warming homemade food, the kind that makes you feel like your visiting grandma. Like her food, Poland’s people will give our pilgrims the experience of visiting a far-away family who has been waiting for your arrival. Whether you are looking for a pilgrimage that tackles humanity’s big questions, or you are looking for splendid solitude in dense forests, mountain hideaways, or crystalline lakes where the Creator’s beauty shines, Poland is the place for you. Register for your pilgrimage or missions trip today.

  • Dine on traditional Polish cuisine.
  • Hike through natural beauty that will still your heart.
  • Contemplate man’s capacity for evil and forgiveness at the Auschwitz Memorial
  • Dive into the underground world of the Wieliczka Salt Mine
  • Worship in a Polish Cathedral filled with sacred surprise

Every Wonder Voyage itinerary (mission trip and/or pilgrimage) is personalized to the desires, direction and personality of each group. This itinerary is only a description of the kind of journey we can create for your unique team.

  • Day 1 –Witamy w Polse! (Welcome to Poland!) Welcome to Poland! Are you ready for an international adventure? Poland’s history goes back to the 10th century, which means we have over a thousand years of kings and castles to explore. We will do a bit of castle spotting as we head to Krakow to our monastic home base. Tonight, we prepare our hearts for the adventure of a lifetime.
  • Day 2 – Adparo (To Prepare) The former royal capital of Kraków is a living architecture museum through the ages. It’s perfectly preserved Gothic core proudly wears the layers of Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architectural styles. We’ll study the history of Poland through an underground tour of Krakow. The theme of our journey is the Latin word adparo, “to prepare.” Let us prepare our hearts inwardly for pilgrimage, in our personal lives, and the community of faith.
  • Day 3 – Splendid Solitude One of Poland’s gifts to you is a love for hiking. Away from the big cities, much of Poland is unspoiled. While large swathes of the country are flat, the southern border is lined with a chain of low-lying, beautiful mountains that invite quiet and contemplation. We spend a few hours in this splendid solitude, experiencing the peace of God that passes all understanding, a peace the Spirit longs to give us.
  • Day 4 –  Auschwitz We will be taking a somber journey today to the Auschwitz Memorial concentration camp. Between 1940 and 1945, over 1.1 million people from eighteen nations died here, including Jewish men, women and children, and Soviet and Polish prisoners of war. We explore a dark history today, uncovering the worst of mankind and the best of humanity. This is a day that has the potential for lifelong transformation, so prepare your heart to listen for the Spirit’s voice.
  • Day 5– Unexpected Preparing for the unexpected is a huge part of being a pilgrim. To that end, we are throwing some unexpected twists and turns at you today. Our first stop is a place hidden from the world, full of secrets and legends. We will need to journey underground to wander the Mine of Mysteries. The afternoon allows us free time to explore Krakow before a journey to Calvary.
  • Day 6 – Transition Our journey heads north to Warsaw, but we go by way of monastic meandering. Life’s inevitable transitions are some of the hardest things to prepare for as we go from one time to the next. Once in Warsaw, we settle in and do a bit of exploration. The capital of Warsaw, like the legendary phoenix, has arisen from the ashes of destruction during WWII. Today, she impresses with her resilience, respect for history, contemporary style, and sheer joie de vivre.
  • Day 7 – Warsaw Beauty Let’s contemplate the heart of Warsaw as we prepare for beauty. Today we walk through her magnificent market center, weave amongst its diverse architecture, and visit a few of her treasures, such as the art of Łazienki Park and the Galeria Forty. How does beauty reflect God’s love and prepare our hearts for the world around us?
  • Day 8 – Wesołego Sabatu “A happy sabbath” to our Poland pilgrims. We begin our Sunday worshiping with our fellow Anglicans in Warsaw before spending a free afternoon exploring the town. A gigantic, scrumptious Polish feast will fill our bellies during our Celebration Dinner, before ending our evening with our sacred Pass the Candle service.
  • Day 9 – Farewell, Poland This voyage has been an adventure that will forever leave an imprint on our lives. Each step has been one of preparation for our future. We depart with this pilgrim’s blessing from Pope John Paul II: “And I cry out from the depths of this millennium – let your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth. The face of this land. And our hearts.” Pożegnanie Polsko, Farewell Poland!

Mission trips.

Discover your place in God’s story around the world

We believe that every life matters to God and our hope through local and global missions is that others come to know and have a relationship with Jesus

2024 mission trips.

The name of the Moyo Missions outreach in Brazil is Vinde Meninos, which means “Come Children” in Portuguese. This name was inspired by an old hymn welcoming children to come and give their lives to Christ. In the Gospel of Matthew 19:13- 15, we see the heart of Jesus as He welcomes children as they come to Him. Kids at Vinde Meninos REALLY love soccer! Along with teaching them about the Bible and helping with schoolwork, we like to help them advance their skills in the things they love.

Although Winston Churchill once called Uganda the “Pearl of Africa” its natural beauty is often overlooked because of the impact poverty has had on the East African nation. In 2012 Moyo Missions stepped into that poverty to build The Village of Eden, a home for orphaned and vulnerable children in Eastern Uganda. You will serve some of these children as well as the missionaries from around the world who live there.

There are many ways to choose which trip is best for you. You may feel a connection to a certain area; a place you’ve studied, visited before, or a specific culture or people group that God has put on your heart. Ultimately, we ask that you pray and ask God for discernment and confirmation as you consider this faith journey.

Each day participants will partner with local believers in their neighborhoods to build relationships with people through community transformation projects, and help bring the love and message of Jesus to that location. You will definitely receive more than you give!

For more detailed trip specific information, click on the individual trip you are prayerfully considering.

Every trip has different opportunities and challenges so each person’s ability to participate is handled on a case by case basis.

The majority of trips last anywhere from 7 to 10 days.

Trip costs typically range from $1500-$3500. This includes your airfare, transportation, translators, meals in country, and housing. A $100 deposit fee is required once your application has been accepted and will be rolled into your trip balance. If you decide to have a meal or coffee at an airport, this will come from personal money unless otherwise specified by your trip leader.

In addition, you may want to bring personal spending money as some countries have markets to buy souvenirs. These make great mementos to remember your trip by, as well as thoughtful gifts for some of your financial supporters.

Yes. Travelers insurance is supplied for trip participants. Typical coverage might include Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Medical Expenses, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Family Coordination & Repatriation, Assistance Services, Crisis Management Service, luggage, General Liability, Disability Income, etc.

Team sizes typically range from 5 to 15 and vary based on location.

In short, NO! While financial stewardship is extremely important in our walk with Christ, our Heavenly Father provides for the mission He calls His children to do. Your mission trip starts the moment you are accepted, which includes being trained in the support raising process. We believe you will see support raising as an incredible experience of God’s provision because the God we serve is bigger than any number. Pray about which of the countries and ministries the Lord would have you serve and sign up!

Donors should make checks payable to 12Stone Church and write the person’s full name and destination in the memo line or include trip information in an envelope with the check. Checks with this information can be put into the offering plate, dropboxes, or mailed to the church at

12Stone Church, Attn: Global Outreach 1322 Buford Dr Lawrenceville, GA 30043

Contributions are tax-deductible and non-refundable.

However, the quickest way to donate is online:

  • Each trip participant will have a dedicated funding page where donors can give directly to their account.

Throughout this ministry you will function as part of a team. Your effectiveness is determined not just from an individual standpoint, but also as a team. Each person’s ability to raise funds varies depending on who they know, how many people they know, their ability to communicate effectively, etc. Therefore, since the goal is to fund the entire team, any monies given beyond what you will need will go to support other team members who are behind on their fundraising goal.

Poland Pilgrimage – Top Sites For The Catholic Pilgrimage To Poland

Over 85% of Poles are Catholics. There are many saints that were Poles, including the pope John Paul 2, Sister Faustina, and more. You will be surprised how many destinations there are for the pilgrimage to Poland!

This in-depth article is covering all the important Poland pilgrimage sites. I am a native Pole, being born and raised in this country, so I’ve visited most of these places myself.

My goal is to help travelers and pilgrims to get the most of their trip to my homeland, that’s why I started a Facebook group that connects people visiting and living in Poland. Be sure to join us if you are looking for Poland travel advice and tips.

Let’s get back to Poland catholic pilgrimage sites though. Here’s the map of all the Polish pilgrimage spots that you can find it this article:

It’s easy to notice that most of the Poland pilgrimage sites are located in the south of the country, pretty close to Krakow . It’s strictly correlated with the religiosity of the Poles.

South is considered as more traditional, conservative, and involved in religious life, whereas North is more liberal.

Table of Contents

Czestochowa Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

The sanctuary in Jasna Gora is considered as the holiest place in Poland. It’s where you can see the famous painting of Black Madonna with two scars on Her cheek.

Hundreds of people claim to be healed after praying to the Black Madonna. The painting is so holy, that it’s hidden in the altar most of the time. It’s being unveiled a few times a day, the last time at 9 PM with the solemn apel jasnogórski (evening prayers to the Viring Mary).

People from all over the world are choosing Jasna Gora for their Poland pilgrimage destination. Recently, a 95-year old woman from Italy has arrived to Czestochowa , after walking for 3 months . She wanted to thank the Holy Mother of God for her miraculous recovery from the deadly illness.

Krakow Pilgrimage

When you think of the holy places in Krakow, 2 names should pop into your head: the pope John Paul I I and Sister Faustina Kowalska . They both have been living in the city for a long time and they are both saints that become one of the most important in the Catholic religion.

There are many places you should visit during your Krakow pilgrimage, here are those you cannot miss:

Divine Mercy Shrine

poland mission trips

Pilgrimage to Divine Mercy Shrine in Poland is a must for every Catholic. It’s where sister Faustina Kowalska has died.

Have you seen the painting of Merciful Jesus with two rays streaming from His heart? Or have you heard the words: “Jesus, I trust you”. It’s both taken from sister Faustina’s visions.

Located in the outskirts of Krakow, Lagiewniki is a big complex with the Divine Mercy Shrine being the most important one. You can find there the original Jesus I Trust You painting and the tomb of Sister Faustina.

John Paul II Center

poland mission trips

Located a short walk from Divine Mercy Shrine, John Paul II Center is a newly-built complex. The huge church that is in the center of it has relics of the Polish pope.

John Paul II Center as a bit less formal than the Divine Mercy Shrine- it’s also a pretty interesting place for non-Catholics. There is a view tower within the complex and an outdoor playground for the kids.

Papal Window

Located in the heart of the Krakow’s Old Town, the Papal Window may be easily overlooked. It’s a place worth seeing though!

John Paul II was famous for having great relations with the youth. Every time he was traveling to Krakow, he was staying in the window in the evenings after all the official masses and meetings ended up. He was simply talking with students, laughing, and praying.

The Papal Window is located across the Franciscan church.

Wawel Cathedral

It’s one of the oldest churches in Poland. A place where many famous Poles are buried, and where Polish kings have been crowned throughout the ages.

There are over 180 (!) churches and chapels in Krakow, most of them located in the Old Town area, so be sure to take a stroll around to see at least a few of them.

Wadowice Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

Pope John Paul II was born and raised in Wadowice. What’s interesting, he has been living right next to the basilica, so you can visit all the important places in the town in one go.

The museum of John Paul II has probably the biggest collection of things connected with Karol Wojtyla that includes the letters that were left on his tomb, the gun he got shot, and many, many more.

When you are in Wadowice, be sure to try the famous Papal Cream Cake , John Paul’s favorite pastry. The best you can buy is at “u Lenia”. It’s the small bakery located right behind the church.

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

This UNESCO World Heritage site is located a short ride from Wadowice. It’s was a favorite place Polish pilgrimage site for John Paul II.

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is one of the places you cannot miss during your pilgrimage to Poland. A huge complex is famous for dróżki – a 5km (3 miles) long route with 42 chapels dedicated to Jesus and His Holy Mother.

In the center of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, there is a Bernardine monastery, where you can attend a mass.

Licheń Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

The Basilica in Lichen is one of the top 10 largest churches in the world . Even though it was built recently, it quickly became one of the best destinations for the pilgrimage to Poland.

Even though the church is new, the history of Marian apparition in Lichen dates back to the 19th century. Virgin Mary has been appearing in the old forest, talking with the shepherd Mikołaj Sikatka. She was asking him to convince the people to pray the rosary.

There are many documented miracles that happen after praying to the Virgin Mary in Lichen. Even my own grandmother claims to be healed after putting holy water from Lichen on her sick leg.

For me, the huge Basilica in Lichen is quite overwhelming. I absolutely love visiting the old forest though, where Holy Mother of Jesus originally appeared. It’s located just a few steps away from the main church.

Kalwaria Pacławska Pilgrimage

The smaller sister of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is just as beautiful. Kalwaria Pacławska is located in the Podkarpackie region , close to the Bieszczady Mountains and the border with Ukraine.

The miraculous presence of the Virgin Mary in the sanctuary dates back to the 17th century. Just as in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, you can walk through dróżki in Kalwaria Paclawska.

Wambierzyce Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

People call Wambierzyce a “ Silesian Jerusalem” for a reason. The beautiful baroque basilica that was built there in the 18th century is one of the best Poland pilgrimage sites.

What’s interesting, the miracles in Wambierzyce started hundreds of years before this majestic church was built. The first documented case of miraculous healing dates back to the 13th century when the blind man started seeing again after praying before the figure of the Virgin Mary.

Święta Lipka Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

It’s one of the few Poland pilgrimage sites that are located in northern Poland.

According to the legend, the prisoner that has been captivated in the Kętrzyn’s church was inspired by the Virgin Mary to carve the figure of Her and Her Holy Son.

He has been set free after the sculpture was done. He placed it on the lipa (linden) tree on the way back home. Since that time, many people were miraculously healed after praying before this sculpture.

Right now, there is a beautiful, baroque basilica in the place where the figure was originally placed.

Święty Krzyż Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

It’s the oldest sanctuary in Poland, thus one of the first Polish pilgrimage sites.

Święty Krzyż is a religious place that Polish kings have been visiting throughout the ages.

It’s believed that the old cross that is hidden in the church tabernacle has the relics of the actual cross of Jesus.

Gietrzwałd Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

A hodegetria painting of the Virgin Mary and Jesus that is located in Gietrzwald’s Basilica has been a place of worship since the Middle Ages.

Gietrzwald has become one of the top Polish pilgrimage sites since the Marian apparitions in the 19th century. Virgin Mary asked two little girls to pray the rosary every day. They did so. One of them became a nun and a missionary. She died in Guatemala in 1950.

Świebodzin Pilgrimage

poland mission trips

While you must have heard of Christ the Redeemer of Rio De Janeiro, I bet you haven’t heard of the huge statue of Jesus in Swiebodzin.

What’s interesting is the Christ in Swiebodzin is actually taller than the one in Brasil, which makes it the biggest statue of Jesus in the world!

Thank you. I was there for the World youth day in 2016. Now I would like to travel there by my self to see some of the sites that were crowded, and have more time to see them.

What a great idea! You will love Poland pilgrimage sites.

This is a wonderful article, just what I’ve been looking for! Thank you for putting together this inviting list of pilgrimage sites in Poland. Blessings.

We are planning a visit this summer to Poland and will be in Warsaw and are wondering how to get to Gietrzwald for a visit of the Marian Apparition site. Any advice?

You need to get to Olsztyn or Ostróda (by bus or train), then take a bus to Gietrzwałd. Use this website to plan your trip: https://en.e-podroznik.pl/public/searchingResultsVW.do?startCity=Warszawa&forward=url&tabToken=b8dc7aa4caa85ce30a7ec5f9f641c1c2&toV=c%7C47974&endCity=Gietrzwa%C5%82d&fromV=c%7C54041&tseVw=regularP

Putoval jsem letos z Malých Svatoňovic do Legnice do kostela sv. Jacka. V budoucnu zvažuji i Sokolku, ale nevím, odkud nejlépe vyrazit (100 km)

Thank you for such a good explanation of the holy sites. We will be visiting in a few weeks and have been looking for a private Polish tour guide. Any recommendations?

Please email me at [email protected] maybe I can help.

About Mission Trips to Poland

Poland is a country that is steeped in religion.  Although the dominant religion there is Catholic, the vast majority of religious practice and adherence is purely religious and not salvific.  Less than 1% of the population is Protestant.  Our teams partner with Christian nationals and help encourage the Church and grow it.  We will be involved in evangelism, discipleship (covering various topics), and children’s ministry.

"A land of unspoiled countryside and splendid buildings, and home to 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 23 national parks, Poland is rich in culture, history and natural beauty"

Steven, Travel Director

Enjoy the music of Chopin in Warsaw

The city where Chopin was first discovered provides the perfect backdrop to his masterpieces. Take your pick of many museums, galleries, terraces and parks that still perform concerts daily in honor of this Polish composer and virtuoso, two centuries on.

Journey to the little-known district of Praga in Warsaw

One of the best things to do in Warsaw is to leave the well-trodden Old Town and visit the right bank district of Praga. The once derelict neighborhood has become a favorite among students and artists alike. Explore the gritty bohemia's abandoned factories, now reclaimed and transformed into communal cultural spaces, street art, markets and bars.

Journey to Gdansk

For a change of scenery, head to the port city of Gdansk that bears little resemblance to Poland’s urban centres. Stroll through Main Town and be dazzled by the colorful shop facades of Long Market, an ornate Golden Gate and the bronzed body of a sea God in Neptune Fountain.

Visit Westerplatte, the place where WWII began

A scattering of shelled bunkers and burnt-out ruins contain reminders of the Battle of Westerplatte. This memorial site and monument will whisper Poland’s forlorn story to you. See the lighthouse where the first warning shots were fired and stand where the few brave Polish soldiers tried in vain to defend against the German invasion.

Explore Wieliczka Salt Mines

A short drive from Krakow is a subterranean labyrinth to behold. Descend the many steps and discover an underground world so remarkable in size it contains lakes and a chapel made of salt - right down to its chandeliers. One of the Poland attractions you will have to see with your own two eyes to believe.

Our top 5 things to do in Poland

Walk through the artistic underbelly of Warsaw and stand in the spot where WWII began. These are just some of the captivating experiences served up by Trafalgar in Poland.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum

The largest of the Nazi concentration camps and the resting place of over one million men, women and children, Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is a somber place of reflection. Come face-to-face with the realities of the Holocaust with a walk through these infamous grounds, where you will uncover a dark time in humanity that’s not to be forgotten.

Galeria Raster

Founded by two art critics, this independent gallery is a place known for encouraging participation in culture. Immerse in the excitement of Poland’s next generation with film screenings, concerts, countless artworks and a self-publishing bookstore all found at Galeria Raster. This is the heart of the local contemporary art scene.

Krolikarnia

Fresh respite is found in the ‘Green District’ of Mokotów and the classicist palace that calls it home. Come to Krolikarnia to see the country’s largest collection of sculptures and relax in the leafy estate grounds, where idyllic reading spots and garden performances are plentiful.

Best museums in Poland

A Trafalgar tour through Poland will take you back in time to World War II and forward in time to Poland’s next generation of artists. It is through these museums that you will understand the many chapters of Poland's remarkable story.

The humble pierogi dumplings have been comforting the Polish since the 13th century, enduring and evolving as the years went by. Savoury, salty, spicy, sweet - these half-moon delights will not fail you. From the traditional to the more creative, chefs around the country will surprise you with many moreish fillings.

With a name meaning ‘hunter’s stew’, it’s unsurprising the meal of bigos is meaty and hearty. Expect cabbage, sauerkraut, finely chopped meats and the odd splash of beer or wine stewed for hours. Let this traditional single pot meal warm you on a cool Polish night.

Placki Ziemniaczane

Popular in World War II when there was little to eat, today these potato pancakes are considered a special treat. Try one - or many - at an outdoor market or festival topped with a generous dollop of sour cream or a sweet condiment.

Best food in Poland

Our tours of Poland is complete with many tastes of its simple - and simply delicious - national dishes. You will quickly understand why the Polish say ‘smacznego’ (meaning ‘enjoy your meal’) at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What to pack for Poland

People packing for a tour

Polish phrasebook

Polish is the official language of Poland, so pack a phrasebook to help you learn a few words. If you can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

A secure day bag

Though Poland is considered a safe destination, it isn't immune to pickpockets and petty crime. A good quality zipper bag or travel wallet will keep cash, cards and important items safe.

Poland is a massive country and on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Polish history and culture.

A filtered water bottle

Polish water is officially safe to drink, but the plumbing can affect the quality. Many locals and tourists use bottled water; take the cheaper and more eco-friendly option of a reusable bottle with built in filtration.

Some WWII reading

Whether you’re a history buff or not, a refresher on the world wars will make for a richer experience of the significant and soul stirring sites you will visit in Poland.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Poland for top-level security and trade talks before heading to neighboring Ukraine, which is at war with India's strategic partner, Russia.

Modi will hold talks Thursday in Warsaw with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda, which are expected to focus on security, especially in the region bordering Ukraine.

Ukraine chastised Modi for his visit to Moscow last month, when he met and hugged President Vladimir Putin. Modi has avoided condemning Russia while emphasizing a peaceful settlement to the war in Ukraine.

Poland offers political, humanitarian and defense supports to Ukraine in its war against Russia’s aggression.

In a statement ahead of his arrival in the NATO and European Union member nation, Modi said Poland remains India's key economy partner in Central Europe.

Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski said Poland hopes to sign a strategic partnership agreement with India that will lead to closer political and business relations as well as cooperation in the IT, cybersecurity and defense sectors.

The Indian leader's visit also marks 70 years of official bilateral relations between New Delhi and Warsaw, and comes 45 years after the previous visit by an Indian government leader, Morarji Desai, when Poland was a satellite of the Soviet Union, a dependence it shed in 1989.

Bartoszewski said India is aware that democratic Poland is playing in a “different league” than it was before 1989.

According to the figures cited by the Embassy of India, from 2013-2023, the total value of bilateral trade increased from $1.95 billion to $5.72 billion, with India's exports accounting for majority.

On Wednesday, Modi is to lay wreaths at two monuments in Warsaw marking joint chapters of World War II. One of the monuments honors the “Good Maharaja” Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, who offered protection and care to some 1,000 Polish children evacuated from the Soviet Union to India from 1942-46, the other commemorates the joint effort in the 1944 Battle of Monte Cassino, Italy.

Modi's statement said he is also to meet with representatives of the Indian community in Poland.

Then-Indian President Pratibha Patil visited Poland in 2009, and Tusk, during his first term as prime minister, paid a visit to India in 2010.

On Friday, Modi travels to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The trip to Ukraine comes a month after Zelenskyy criticized Modi's two-day visit to Moscow in July, when he met with Putin on the day Russian missiles struck across Ukraine, killing scores of people.

Zelenskyy had described the meeting as a “huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts." He also chided Modi for hugging Putin during their meeting.

India has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion and instead has urged Russia and Ukraine to resolve the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Modern Diplomacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Poland on August 21, 2024, stands out as a key event in India’s foreign policy. It shows India’s dedication to building stronger connections with Europe. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland, after Former PM Morarji Desai in 1979, earlier to that both Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had visited the country. It also came at a crucial time as both nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations.

The relation between India and Poland goes back to the years much before India’s independence. In the years of Second World War, thousands including Polish children taken refuge in India near places like Jamnagar, Kolhapur, Balachadi. Over the years, India and Poland have seen their economic ties grow stronger. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Poland played a significant role in helping India build up its industries, especially in mining and heavy sectors. Working together on new tech and setting up businesses together were at the heart of this relationship. Poland shared its know-how about coal mining with India, an area where Poland had lots of experience under its belt.

Culturally, the exchange between India and Poland has been rich and diverse. India’s Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s, writings left a significant impact on Polish intellectual circles, one of his famous translations into Polish the play ‘ The Post Office’ deserves a special attention. Indian films, literature, and art have found a receptive audience in Poland, fostering a deep cultural connection. Similarly, Poland’s rich history, literature, and music have influenced Indian artists and scholars.

PM Modi’s trip started with his visit to the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar Memorial in Warsaw, followed by the Kolhapur Memorial to pay homages for the great contributions. Later in the day, during his interaction with the diaspora community, he highlighted the help provided by Poland during the earthquake in Gujarat, two decades ago, and also during the Russia Ukraine conflicts, that demonstrates the intensity of the relationship between New Delhi and Warsaw.

India and Poland have identified several key areas for cooperation, including trade and investments, defence and security, science and technology, and culture. Trade between the two countries have been steadily growing, with both countries recognizing the potential for expanding their economic partnership. According to figures cited by the Embassy of India, the total value of bilateral trade increased from $1.95 billion to $5.72 billion from 2013-2023, with India’s exports accounting for a majority. Indian companies have invested in Poland’s manufacturing sector, while Polish companies have found opportunities in India’s IT and pharmaceutical industries.

To strengthen Trade and investment both sides agreed to explore further cooperation in the sphere of high technology, agriculture, food technology, climate and energy, defence, healthcare. They also agreed to work together and fully utilize the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) to achieve desire goal at the end of next year.

During PM Modi’s meet with his Polish counterpart PM Donald Tusk, recognizing their long-standing ties, the two leaders underscored that as the world’s two largest democracies, the EU and India have a common interest in ensuring security, prosperity and sustainable development in a “multi-polar World”. They also reaffirmed their commitment to deepen India-EU Strategic Partnership, which would not only benefit both sides but also have a far-reaching positive impact internationally. Both the leaders being of the same opinion agreed to prepare and bring off a five-year action plan to escort bilateral partnership in the years 2024-2028.

Using the same forum both the leaders their deepest concern over the war raging in Ukraine including its terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences. PM Modi again specified that “India firmly believes that no problem can be solved on the battlefield” .

One of the significant topics that came out in the discussion between the two leaders’ “Terrorism” Both sides stressed the need for firm implementation of relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, as well as the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. They also reaffirmed on the early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) .

An Outreach to Eastern and Central Europe?

From the other side, PM Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland, later on Ukraine in the following days reveals a crux of India’s geopolitical maneuver. India’s aggressive neighbour, China trying to make its path in the continent. This year in the month May, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a visit to two Eastern Europe countries namely Serbia, Hungary and in the west, France. Scholars and experts argued that this step of China was divide to Europe, to solidify Chinese stronghold in the region, which gives India a significant point to make efforts in building ties with countries in the same.

PM Modi’s visit to Denmark in the year 2022, meeting with Nordic countries followed by the visit to Greece in 2023 and the last month trip to Austria manifests India’s growing interest in different parts of Europe, earlier which used to be focused mainly on countries like Russia, France, Germany, Britain. Diversifying relationships will help India in maintaining its economic and security ties at the same having a stack between the other powers like China, Russia.

In terms of trade, this region, with its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, offers India an access to a market of over 100 million people, as a result India’s trade and investment in the region has grown steadily.

To sum up, India sees Poland much more than just a key partner in Central Europe. It views the country as a gateway for deeper connections with the EU and the Trans-Atlantic community. The world now faces big challenges, from conflicts between nations to changes in the climate. In this context, the partnership between India and Poland shows how diplomacy, working together, and respecting each other can help build a brighter future. Similarly, as geopolitics continue to shift, India’s outreach to countries in different parts of Europe looks promising, as for New Delhi there’s nothing to lose, instead can be a stepping stone for future cooperation.
