Thrissur's Top 10 Off-the-Beaten-Path Discoveries

Nestled in central Kerala lies the vibrant cultural hub of Thrissur, renowned for its ancient temples, iconic festivals and historic monuments. However, the gemstones embedded in Thrissur's crown shine brightest away from the tourist trail, in sacred groves drowned in folklore, misty waterfalls inside silent forests and breezy hilltops with majestic views.

Come, let us cast the limelight on ten of Thrissur's hidden treasures brimming with natural splendour, ancient spiritual secrets and bygone vestiges patiently awaiting discovery.

1. Peechi Dam Sanctuary Amid the Backwaters

Just 20 kilometres from Thrissur unfolds the scenic charm of Peechi Dam built across the serene Manali River. Enter through arched gateways into a tranquil sanctuary stretching across 3 square kilometres flanked by the velvety green Kole Wetlands.

One can spend hours here watching dainty butterflies flutter past, exotic birds diving for fish and leaves swaying in the breeze. Take photographs of the shimmering emerald waters reflecting the sunset colours with a forested backdrop. Don't miss a languorous boat cruise at dusk to spot grazing deer and wild boar.

2. Vilangan Hills Palace Amid the Clouds

Perched atop verdant slopes 12 kilometres from Thrissur near Kodungallur lies the relatively unexplored emerald hill retreat of Vilangan Hills. Pepper vines creep around crumbling laterite walls concealing the remains of a once majestic Jain palace complex dating back to the 15th century.

One can still glimpse traces of regal glory in carved pillars and stone deities tangled with hanging roots. The thick foliage hides a hidden shrine which becomes the site of vibrant Arya Kavu festival celebrations annually.

The real jewel however shines through in the cloud-kissed panoramas unfurling from the misty hills down to the azure Arabian Sea! For a unique blend of history, architecture and natural beauty, visit Vilangan Hills.

3. Thrissur Archaeological Museum Time Travelling through Eras

While most tourists flock to the popular Kerala Kalamandalam and Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur, the city's Archaeological Museum located near the famed PalaceGround often escapes attention. Step past unassuming gates into an erstwhile princedom palace today housing stone and wood sculptures originating from the Neolithic to modern ages.

Witness 1500-year old deity idols, musical instruments inscribed with ancient scripts, delicate jewelry speaking of bygone cultures and life-size statues with hints of legend carved into their stony silhouettes. The curiosities from Thrissur's past almost seem alive in the spacious yet hidden halls of this museum.

4. Thommankuthu Waterfalls Into Nature's Hidden Abode

Nestled deep in a remote rivulet 20 kilometres from Thrissur lies the enchanting seven-step cascade of Thommankuthu Waterfalls plunging down a rocky cliff into a natural pool surrounded by emerald foliage. Its relative seclusion from the beaten tourist paths promises a soul-stirring experience amid untamed natural splendour.

One has to embark on a short scenic trek across the gushing Thannipuzha river and verdant rice paddies to reach this hidden spot. The rocky path downhill can prove to be an adventurous delight especially after rains! Plunging into the crystalline waters as soothing spray caresses your face makes it an especially magical outing ideal for young travellers and nature lovers.

5. Kauthuka Park Floral Haven

Nestled on verdant acres near Shakthan Thampuran Palace lies a floral haven called Kauthuka Park that remains largely unexplored. Entry through intricately carved gates transports you into an oasis blooming with roses, marigolds and exotic orchids all jostling for attention amid pretty landscaped lawns, gurgling fountains and quaint pavilions.

One instantly feels worlds apart from Thrissur's chaotic streets amid twittering sparrows, squirrels nibbling on fruits and golden butterflies kissing peach-hued champak flowers. The floral fragrances perfume the clean air, calming one's senses. An idyllic playground for kids plus ample space for picnicking families make Kauthuka Park one of Thrissur's precious backyard secrets.

6. Ezhome Beach Into the Lap of Tranquility

Just 16 serene kilometres west from Thrissur city lies the relatively unexplored seaside haven of Ezhome Beach near Kodungallur town. Its atmospheric backwaters lined by Chinese fishing nets, sleepy villages with coconut groves and an expansive, unpopulated coast with gentle blue waves rolling ashore promise a soul-soothing experience.

One can luxuriate on empty golden sands while fishermen return with the day's catch besides you. Or witness an ethereal sunset reflected in the shimmering waves as you nibble on just-caught prawns and sip tender coconut water acquired from a smiling local.

For serenity blended with an authentic taste of coastal life, visit Ezhome Beach near Thrissur for memories to last forever.

7. Vazhani Dam Breathtaking Reservoir Vistas

Tucked 16 kilometres away from Thrissur city amidst the quaint western villages of Chelakkara and Mulloorkkara lies the relatively unexplored scenic haven of Vazhani Dam. One has to pass little cottages with kitchen gardens and areca palms rustling beside streams to reach this fertile site.

Stroll upon the thick dam as the infant waters of Chalakudy river gurgle underneath in the reservoir reflecting clouds drifting across lush forested hills nearby. Occasionally a school of tiny fish dimples the surface as winter birds circle above seeking prey.

For a soul-enriching tryst with lush landscapes and glittering backwaters around Thrissur, visit postcard-perfect Vazhani Dam soon.

8. Charpa Falls A Hidden Forest Waterfall Marvel

Imagine chancing upon a 20-foot high waterfall hidden inside dense forests near Kodungallur in Thrissur! The relative inaccessibility of Charpa Waterfalls tucked amidst the serene woods of Vazhachal makes it a gorgeous secret even from locals. One has to embark on a short uphill jungle trek amidst bamboo clusters and mini streams from the forest checkpost to reach this beauty spot.

Soon the roar of waters plunging into a rocky pool lined with trees becomes audible. And you'll gasp seeing the pure white cascade dramatically unveiled before your eyes as mist rises in thin veils around forming ephemeral rainbows! The sharp scent of wet earth and raw power of untamed nature promises to make your outing to Charpa falls simply magical.

9. Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary Into the Forest Heartland with Elephants & Tigers!

Home to the largest population of Asiatic elephants and tigers in Kerala, the verdant forests of Chimmini near Pavaratty town also house endangered hornbills, leopards, gaurs, sambars plus countless birds. A moist deciduous haven spread across 125 square kilometres, this sanctuary lets one discover the wild heart of Thrissur.

Trained guides accompany visitors on jungle safaris along the Chimmini reservoir and grasslands using machans and watchtowers to spot wildlife without disturbing them. Get lucky and you'll return with thrilling tales of confrontations with tuskers or the flash of a tiger streaking past through the foliage! For offbeat wildlife spotting adventures minus tourist crowds, visit the charming Chimmini sanctuary.

10. Kanakakkunnu Palace Glorious History Amid Scenic Beauty

The vibrant cultural capital of Thrissur has no dearth of architectural wonders. However, few tourists explore the 19th century estate of Kanakakkunnu Palace tucked away behind N.S.C. Bose road. Today an indoor stadium and children's park, the monument's whitewashed elegant facade and lawns dotted with trees still exude royal charm.

Climb up to the open-air auditorium on the terrace to enjoy panoramic vistas of the city with the famed Vadakkumnathan Temple golden roofs visible against verdant slopes lined with modern highrises. As the winter sunset colours the sky in glorious hues, one feels immersed in the heritage heart of Thrissur away from its busy streets.

So come explore these hidden gems in and around cultural powerhouse Thrissur that showcase untouristy sites brimming with history, nature, photography and spirituality for the road less travelled.

Suresh Gopi won't win in Thrissur; asked Thushar not to contest: Vellapally Natesan

 alt=

Thiruvananthapuram: SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan on Sunday said the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate in Thrissur Suresh Gopi would lose from the constituency. "Suresh Gopi is not a politician and that will cost him. His lack of experience as a politician has already caused problems in Thrissur," said Natesan.

He, however, said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would increase their vote share in the state. Natesan criticised all three fronts for solely focusing on minorities during the election. "All three fronts were competing to appease the minorities," he said.

Natesan said he had advised his son Thushar against contesting the polls. "There's no chance Thushar would garner all the Ezhava votes. He contested based on the instructions of the front," said Natesan. Thushar Vellapally was the NDA's candidate in the Kottayam constituency.

He then predicted a UDF win in the state in the elections, though not as huge as the victory in 2019. "All 20 constituencies were hotly contested. There's no point in making predictions based on hearsay. In Alappuzha, if Sobha Surendran garners more votes, it will benefit Ariff (LDF candidate). Whereas, if she doesn't get as many votes, Venugopal (UDF candidate) would reap the benefits. However, Sobha will fare much better in the constituency than the BJP did here in the earlier election," opined Natesan.

Giving his two cents on the E P Jayarajan-Prakash Javadekar meeting, the SNDP leader said the controversy could have been avoided. "Jayarajan is a senior leader. Party leaders will meet each other. However, the time and situation of the meeting is important. Had the meeting happened with the CPM's knowledge, it would not have been an issue. But if it's taken place otherwise, then it is a mistake as per party policy. Jayarajan is two steps behind as LDF convener. He hasn't made any strong statements. The resort controversy he is embroiled in could be the reason," said Natesan, adding he had no comments on whether Jayarajan would join the BJP.

This Ski Resort Town Was Just Named the Most Expensive Vacation Destination in the U.S.

You may want to start saving up for that vacation right now.

tourist destination thrissur

janelca/Getty Images

The average cost of a one-week vacation in the U.S. for just one person hit nearly $2,000 in 2023, up by more than $400 over the previous year, according to a study by Bankrate . And this is just for a basic trip. But if you're hoping to go to places like New York City , you're going to spend a pretty penny, as it was just named the eighth most expensive destination in America.

The travel experts at OptimosTravel recently analyzed more than 100 vacation spots in the United States, assessing each on the price of a daily meal, public transit, accommodation rates, and attraction fees, all in an effort to uncover the 10 most expensive vacation destinations in the nation. After crunching the numbers, it found that Aspen, Colorado, is the most expensive of all.

"Aspen, Colorado, tops the list as the most expensive vacation spot, with a total daily cost of $761.39 per person, leading to a whopping $5,329.72 for a 7-day trip per person," the team noted in its findings, which it shared with Travel + Leisure.

The research crew noted that gourmet meals can cost upward of $100.5 per day, while "opulent accommodations" cost $494.56 per night. "Aspen's breathtaking scenery comes with a premium price tag," it added, "and for a family of four, the skies are the limit at $13,691. Even with modest transportation costs at $7, the city's unmatched offerings ensure its status as the epitome of luxury travel."

Joining Aspen at the top of the most expensive list is Park City, Utah, in second, where travelers can expect to pay $93.75 for daily meals and $471 per night for lodging. "A week's stay costs $4,971 for one and $12,632 for a family of four," the team shared.

Maui, Hawaii, wasn't far behind in third, with a daily cost of $682. "It boasts the highest meals ($112.50) and lodging ($534.11) among top destinations, but affordable attractions ($26.63) balance the cost. A week costs $4,762 solo or $10,782 for families."

These spots were followed by Montauk, New York, in fourth, with a daily cost of $613.77; Santa Monica, California, in fifth with a daily cost of $592.05; Key West, Florida in sixth, with a daily cost of $537; Charleston in seventh with a daily cost of $535.68; and New York City in eighth with a daily cost of $511.34.

Rounding out the top 10 is Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts in ninth with a daily cost of $496.65, and one more ski town, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in 10th, with a daily cost of $490 per day. And while, yes, this all sounds expensive, you can't really put a price tag on making new memories. Right? See the full findings at optimostravel.com .

Deep Beneath London, Onetime Bomb Shelters Will Become a Tourist Attraction

Used for spying, a phone exchange and more over the years, a semi-secret web of tunnels in central London could open to the public in 2027.

A computer-generated rendering of people in a purple and blue tunnel.

By Claire Moses

Reporting from 98 feet below street level in London

There’s a locked door on the eastbound platform of the Chancery Lane station of the London Underground. The door is unassuming, sturdy and white.

Behind it is a wide set of stairs leading to a roughly mile-long maze of tunnels built in the 1940s that were first intended to serve as a World War II shelter and later used for espionage, the storage of 400 tons of government documents and telecom services.

Welcome to the Kingsway Exchange tunnels, set roughly 100 feet below street level in the center of London, sprawling beneath the Underground’s Central Line. Soon they could enter a new chapter: Angus Murray, the owner of the complex, who bought the tunnels last summer, has applied for planning permission to the local authorities together with the architecture firm WilkinsonEyre to turn the tunnels into a tourist destination that could handle millions of people a year.

Mr. Murray’s London Tunnels is planning to invest a total of 220 million pounds (about $275 million) on restoring and preserving the tunnels, as well as adding technology for art installations and other attractions. Mr. Murray hopes to open the complex in 2027, and said that it would be able to host temporary art exhibitions, fashion shows and more.

At the moment, entering the tunnels requires riding a small elevator tucked behind a side door in an alleyway off a wide street in central London. (Visitors to the attraction would use a different, bigger entrance, Mr. Murray said.)

When the elevator doors open, you step into a World War II-era tunnel — one of 10 civilian shelters proposed by the British government after the beginning of the Blitz, the eight-month bombing of London by the Germans that started in September 1940. The tunnels were never used as shelters. By the time they were completed in 1942, the Blitz was over.

During the Cold War, the British government instructed its telephone department, which later became British Telecom, to set up a secret communications system in the tunnels that could survive a nuclear attack. The famous hotline between the Kremlin and the White House ran through the complex, according to the project’s website. Some of the phone exchange’s equipment in the tunnels still survives today, even though it hasn’t been used since at least the 1980s.

“The idea was that it would provide a degree of protection,” said Martin Dixon, a trustee for Subterranea Britannica , a charity that documents and tries to preserve underground spaces.

“If the Cold War had turned into something more serious, it would have allowed communications on some level to continue,” Mr. Dixon, who joined Subterranea Britannica about 40 years ago, said.

The tunnels under the Chancery Lane station of the tube are more than a mile long and in some places have a diameter of almost 25 feet. Those dimensions make them among the largest sets of tunnels built for people in a metropolitan city, Mr. Murray said.

“They have a fascinating history,” he said.

For a group of Post Office and telecoms workers in the decades after World War II, the tunnel complex became a workplace, some aspects of which have survived. In one room, the stuffy smell of an old carpet is inescapable. Another still holds the remnants of a canteen. Yet another has fake windows framing images of nature as decorations. There are still offices, as well as rooms where workers could spend the night.

Some parts of the tunnels are lined with fake walls, and doors with nothing behind them. The effect is not unlike watching a scene from the dystopian Apple TV+ show “Severance .”

A bar where postal workers could drink is also still there, and Mr. Murray said he hoped to revive it and make it London’s deepest underground bar.

The tunnels’ communication operation became obsolete in the 1980s, and in 2008 British Telecom put the tunnels up for sale . BT employees used to go down into the complex up until the 1990s to inspect for fire safety and other conditions. The tunnels were otherwise vacant.

Many details of the new attraction still need to be ironed out, but Mr. Murray said the cost of the experience would probably be in the same price range as that of other major tourist sites in London. (The Tower of London’s entry fee is about $40, and Westminster Abbey’s is about $36.)

Mr. Dixon, of Subterranea Britannica, said he was excited about the prospect of the Kingsway Exchange turning into an attraction — provided it’s safe and the history is preserved.

“I’ve seen thousands of underground spaces, from the mundane to the spectacular,” he said. The Kingsway Exchange is particularly interesting, he added, because of all the different functions it had. “It played its part in World War II, and was ready to play its part in the Cold War.”

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.

The roughly $5.35 daily tourist access fee for Venice, home to the Rialto Bridge, Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica, launched as a pilot on Thursday after it received the go-ahead from city officials in mid-September. It targets day-trippers coming into the city between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is required on specific dates in April, May, June and July during the test period.

Bhutan, nestled in the Himalayas in Asia, asks most tourists to hand over nightly Sustainable Development Fees of $100 for adults and $50 for ages 6-12. It charges a differently-priced fee from those coming from India. The money goes toward "various projects that create long-term, sustainable opportunities for the Bhutanese people," the country’s department of tourism website said.

Japanese town to block Mount Fuji view from troublesome tourists

A man poses in front of a service station with Mt Fuji in the background as someone takes a photo

A huge black barrier to block Mount Fuji from view will be installed in a popular photo spot by Japanese authorities who are exasperated by crowds of badly behaved foreign tourists.

Construction of the mesh net -- 2.5 metres high and the length of a cricket pitch at 20 metres -- will begin as early as next week, an official from the town of Fujikawaguchiko said on Friday.

"It's regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can't respect rules," he told AFP, claiming tourists were littering and ignoring traffic regulations.

It is the latest direct action in Japan against over-tourism after residents of Kyoto's geisha district banned visitors from small private alleys this year.

Record numbers of overseas tourists are travelling to the country, where monthly visitors exceeded three million in March for the first time ever.

Mount Fuji, Japan's highest mountain, can be photographed from many spots in the resort town of Fujikawaguchiko.

But this viewpoint is particularly popular because the majestic volcano appears behind a Lawson convenience store, which are ubiquitous in Japan.

Due to this visual juxtaposition, "a reputation has spread on social media that this spot is very Japanese, making it a popular photo location," said the town official who declined to be named.

The mostly non-Japanese tourists are overcrowding a stretch of pavement next to the Lawson shop, he said.

After traffic signs and repeated warnings from security guards fell on deaf ears, the town in the Yamanashi region decided on the huge screen as a last resort.

The measure is also meant to protect a nearby dental clinic against the onslaught of tourists.

They sometimes park there without permission and have even been seen climbing on the roof of the clinic to get the perfect shot, the official said.

The town wishes it hadn't come down to this, he said, adding that the current plan is for the screen to be maintained until the situation improves.

Tourism to Japan has been booming since pandemic-era border restrictions were lifted, and the government has been working hard to boost visitor numbers.

But this has not been universally welcomed — including in Kyoto, where locals have complained of snap-happy tourists harassing the city's immaculately dressed geisha.

And this summer, hikers using the most popular route to climb Mount Fuji will be charged ¥2,000 ($20) each, with numbers capped to ease congestion.

Other top destinations worldwide are also struggling with visitor numbers, and on Thursday Venice began charging day-trippers for entry to tackle mass tourism.
