The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia (or in Croatian, Plitvička Jezera) is one of those places that simply defies words.

Made up of 16 interconnected lakes that tumble into each other, one after the other, in a series of stunning waterfalls, the Plitvice Lakes were designated as Croatia’s first national park in 1949, and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

The lakes themselves are absolutely magnificent, filled with crystal-clear water that changes color by the hour, but often appears as a bright turquoise that seems more suitable to a fantasy novel than a place on Earth.

Picturesque wooden boardwalks criss-cross the lakes, creating a fairytale-worthy environment where you can get right up close to the fabulous natural beauty.

I first became enamored with the idea of visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia after finding a photo of the park on Pinterest almost a decade ago, and many years, two trips, and several days spent staring in wonder at the lakes later, I’m still just as smitten with them.

Planning a trip to the Plitvice Lakes?

We’ve put together this guide to visiting Croatia’s beautiful Plitvice Lakes to help you plan your trip, and have packed it full with everything we wish we had known before visiting for the very first time.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in central Croatia, in the eastern part of the country, and not far from Croatia’s border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

If you’d prefer to avoid driving yourself or booking a tour, you can reach the park by bus.

Planning a Plitvice Lakes holiday involves making dozens of decisions about how to spend your time in and around the park.

Before we dive into details, let’s cover some quick Plitvice Lakes FAQ.

Should you take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Short answer: you can, but where you leave from matters a lot.

In our opinion, the Plitvice Lakes are a much better experience if you can spend at least one night in the area, as you’ll be able to see the park shortly after opening and before closing (ie, when all of the daytrippers aren’t there!), you’ll have more opportunities to explore in case bad weather ruins some of your plans, and you’ll get to see more of the park.

However, we completely understand that depending on how your Croatia itinerary shakes out, that may not be possible.

If you do want to take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park, it’s best to do so from either Zagreb or Zadar. From these locations, you can either drive yourself or book a tour– this tour from Zagreb and this tour from Zadar are well-reviewed, popular, and will help you make the most of your limited time in the park.

In a pinch, you can also take a day trip from Split, but it makes for a very long day, and we feel it’s best accomplished with a tour– this one is a great option.

We absolutely do not recommend taking a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Dubrovnik, though you’ll find the occasional enterprising tour company offering them.

How much does it cost to visit the Plitvice Lakes?

The ticket price for visiting the Plitvice Lakes varies throughout the year, with the most expensive months to visit being June, July, August, and September (when ticket prices are roughly $45 USD/person for a one day ticket).

In the winter, tickets are at their cheapest, coming in at around $12 USD for a one-day adult ticket–so as you can see, prices vary dramatically!

One and two-day tickets are available, and discounts are available for students and children.

Be sure to keep an eye on the ticket prices–they have almost doubled since we first visited Plitvice in 2015 and will likely continue to climb. You can find the most up-to-date information on prices here .

Which is better: Plitvice Lakes Entrance 1 or 2?

We recommend starting at Entrance 1 for your first (or only, as the case may be) day in the park.

Arriving via Entrance 1 will allow you to start your day by admiring one of the most famous viewpoints in Plitvice Lakes National Park, explore the Lower Lakes, and then make your way to the ferry after a couple of hours of exploring and head to the Upper Lakes.

When is Plitvice Lakes National Park open?

The park is open year-round, 365 days per year, though some trails and access points close depending on weather–for example, the Upper Lakes often close during the winter.

Like most national parks, Plitvice has longer hours in the summer months. You can check official park hours for your dates here .

Can you swim in the Plitvice Lakes?

Nope! Leave your bathing suit at home–swimming is forbidden in the national park.

If you’d like to swim in some of Europe’s best waterfalls during your trip, we recommend checking out Krka National Park.

Can you bring food into Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Yes, and there are small convenience stores at the entrances selling snacks.

Of course, you’ll find more selection and better prices if you shop a bit further from the park.

Alternatively, there are some restaurants and snack stands available inside the park, so you won’t go hungry either way.

If you only have one day in Plitvice Lakes National Park, this is a fantastic way to spend it!

The Plitvice itinerary outlined here makes for a full day, but you’ll see most of the famous viewpoints as well as some of Plitvice’s less well-known but still stunning corners.

If you have longer in the parks, you can either explore more slowly, perhaps by focusing on the Lower Lakes one day and the Upper Lakes the next (that’s how we structured our first visit), or add in more trails and viewpoints.

The official national park website has several suggested programs for exploring the park that provide a good overview of what options you have–if you have a half-day or less to spend in Plitvice, for example, they have a program for that!

Keep in mind that this sample Plitvice Lakes itinerary assumes that you’ll be visiting in the summer, when the park is open the longest. Keep an eye on the time if you’re visiting during the offseason!

Morning: Start at Entrance 1 and explore the Lower Lakes.

By kicking off your visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park at Entrance 1, you’ll start your explorations of the park by immediately walking up to one of the most famous views of the lakes: the overview of Veliki Slap (aka the Big Waterfall) from across the gorge.

It’s a magnificent sight, especially in the early-morning light, and a great way to start your day.

Once you finish snapping 10,000 photos, head down the trail to the boardwalks, where you’ll be able to make your way around the Lower Lakes at a leisurely pace.

Veliki Slap as seen from across the gorge near Entrance 1 to the Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Mid-Day: Eat lunch near the lakes and hop the boat to the Upper Lakes.

As you follow the trails through the Lower Lakes, you’ll eventually arrive Kozjačka Draga restaurant and a large surrounding picnic area, which is located right next to the dock where you can board the ferry to the Upper Lakes.

This is a great place to rest and have lunch, whether that’s your own packed lunch or something from the restaurant.

The food at Kozjačka Draga is exactly what you might expect from a restaurant inside a national park: simple, expensive for the area, but filling enough.

After you finish eating and resting, it’s time to board the ferry across Lake Kozjak!

The ferry runs regularly, so join the lineup of people waiting whenever you’re ready.

Be sure to have your ticket ready when you get ready to board–since only one ride is included with your park ticket, the park staff will stamp it as you board.

Grab an outside seat if you can–the views as you cross the lake are lovely!

Afternoon: Follow the path around the Upper Lakes to Entrance 3.

As you wind further and further along the Upper Lakes, the waterfalls will start to be a bit more spread out–but so will the crowds.

This is where you’ll find some of the most peaceful lake views of the day, and if you’re lucky, you may even get to enjoy them alone for a few minutes!

The paths (a combination of wooden boardwalks over the lakes and traditional trails alongside them) are well-marked and will eventually lead to the tram’s Station 3, where you can return to the Lower Lakes and position yourself closer to Entrance 1.

From there, you can enjoy a little more time with the lakes, and potentially return to some of your favorite boardwalk views from the morning to see them under different lighting conditions.

Early Evening: Find the postcard view of the Plitvice Lakes.

What better way to close out a day visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park than by taking in its most famous view?

There are two ways to get the famous postcard view over the Plitvice Lakes (you know, the view all the tour companies use to sell their day trips and that is the top photo on this post!)–and no, a drone is not one of them (drones are not allowed in Plitvice, so leave them at home).

First option: climb up the steep staircase near Veliki Slap. This was closed on our recent visit, but it’s generally an option. The downside of this option is that you’ll then need to climb back down, cross the lakes via boardwalk, and climb back up on the other side to reach Entrance 1 and fetch your car again.

The other way requires a bit of a drive, but is also a bit less hassle if you do it at the end of the day like this Plitvice itinerary suggests: head to 44°54’9″ N 15°36’27” E via car, park near the trailhead, and hike 5-10 minutes down the trail.

We lucked out during our first visit to the park and stayed a short walk from here, and we had no idea how lucky we were at the time!

Bear in mind that while you won’t generally find any park staff or get your ticket checked here, the area is part of Plitvice Lakes National Park and you technically need a valid ticket with you to visit the viewpoint.

Arrive as soon as the gates open… or even a little before.

Trust me: the experience you’ll have at Plitvice, especially during the busy summer months, will be dramatically different if you’re one of the first to hit the boardwalks than if they’re already congested by the time you get there.

As one of the most incredible national parks in Europe , it’s rightfully extremely popular!

During high season, purchase tickets in advance.

In 2019, Croatia introduced an online ticketing system for Plitvice Lakes National Park, which allows you to purchase timed tickets before you arrive, which then must be redeemed at the entrance number and time you selected when buying the tickets.

Tickets are still available to purchase at the park, however, the number of visitors per day has been capped at 10,000–so if you show up too late in the day, especially during the summer, you may find yourself unable to visit that day.

Several small waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes National Park surrounded by karst cliffs and pouring into turquoise lakes

If possible, spend at least one full day at the lakes.

Even if you only visit Plitvice for a day, you’ll get so much more out of your visit if you’re able to stay the whole way through instead of squeezing in a few hours at the park (at the most crowded time of day with the harshest lighting conditions) on a day trip.

… Which means ideally, you’ll spend a night nearby.

Seriously: it’s worth setting aside the time during your trip to Croatia to spend a night at the Plitvice Lakes!

Don’t be afraid to climb!

If you look closely along the trails when exploring the Plitvice Lakes , especially around the Upper Lakes, you’ll notice several opportunities to climb up to a higher trail or vantage point–and the views are virtually always worth the effort.

Be prepared for crowds.

With over 1 million visitors each year and skyrocketing international popularity, there’s no doubt about it: visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia means dealing with a lot of crowds… especially during the beautiful summer.

You can mitigate this by showing up early (and staying late), traveling outside of peak season, and wandering further up the trails than most, but come mentally prepared for the fact that you generally won’t have those beautiful boardwalks all to yourself.

The Plitvice Lakes are in a very rural area.

Because of this, restaurant and hotel choices are limited, which of course lends itself to a selection of subpar restaurants that charge expensive prices for the area.

We recommend checking reviews before sitting down, enjoying the food for what it is, and generally accepting that you won’t have the best food of your Croatia trip while here.

If you are road-tripping to Plitvice, consider stopping at Rastoke on the way!

The village of Rastoke is absolutely beautiful, with waterfalls that literally run through the town and under the buildings–including under a couple of very picturesque antique mills!

We love Rastoke and think it’s definitely worth visiting (it won’t take more than an hour or two to stop by, explore, and grab a cup of coffee at one of the cafes), but it’s best to see it before you arrive at the Plitvice Lakes–as lovely as the waterfalls at Rastoke are, they’ll be underwhelming after experiencing Plitvice itself.

Rastoke Croatia wooden house with old mill in front and waterfalls running under it

Ideally, you’ll want to spend at least one night either in or practically next door to Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes to help ensure that you beat the crowds to the park!

There are three hotels in the park itself, including a mid-range option at Hotel Plitvice and a (somewhat) more luxury choice at Hotel Jezero .

The budget option, Hotel Bellevue , gets more mediocre reviews than the other two but still offers an excellent location.

Be sure to book as soon as you can commit to dates if you’d like to stay in the park, as these hotels fill up fast!

However, there are also lots of home and apartment rentals right outside the park.

Keep in mind that as this is a rural area, you won’t find many large hotels unless you’re willing to drive a bit further.

Well-reviewed options like this guesthouse are fairly typical for the area–many options are part of small guesthouses that are housed in converted multi-family homes, that sort of thing.

Check rates & book your stay at Hotel Plitvice , Hotel Jezero , or Hotel Bellevue now!

When visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, you’ll likely use a variety of methods for getting around, thanks to the park’s fantastic infrastructure.

Here are the most popular.

Obviously, hiking is the most popular and useful way to get around Plitvice Lakes National Park, and how you’ll spend the bulk of your time there.

The trails are extremely well-maintained and generally fairly smooth to walk across, so this is hardly mountain-climbing, but you’ll want to be comfortable with uneven terrain and moderate to severe inclines and declines to hike through the park without limits.

You won’t drive your car into the park itself, per se, but road tripping is, hands down, the best way to get to the Plitvice Lakes and get around the area as a whole.

Parking is available near each entrance, and you can also use your car to get close to the postcard viewpoint, though you’ll need to park your car and walk the final 5-10 minutes.

For driving to the Plitvice Lakes, we recommend searching for a rental via Discover Cars , which will search multiple rental companies to help you find the best price and rental contract for your Plitvice Lakes vacation.

Check rates & book your rental car for your Plitvice Lakes road trip today!

Plitvice’s tram stops at three stations throughout the park, including near Entrance 3, and on both of our visits, we’ve hiked all the way to Station 3 and then taken the tram back down to the more populated areas of the park.

The tram itself has beautiful views of the lakes, but most importantly, it allows you to explore the less crowded sections of the Upper Lakes without worrying about having to hike back!

The trams run every 30 minutes.

The ferry across Lake Kozjak will take you from the Lower Lakes to the Upper Lakes (or vice versa), and one ride is included with your ticket price when visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Because only one ride is included, we recommend riding the ferry out to the Upper Lakes, hiking up to Station 3, and then taking the tram back down when you’re ready to make your way back toward Entrance 1.

Ferry crossing Lake Kozjak in Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia as seen from above through a patch of trees

If you don’t want to drive yourself or take a tour when visiting the Plitvice Lakes , there is a bus that runs to the park, stopping near Entrance 1 and Entrance 2.

If you choose to go this route, plan carefully to ensure that you’re staying near a bus stop!

While you’ll want to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park in either the late spring, summer, or very early fall for the most popular park experience that is most commonly photographed, the Plitvice Lakes are absolutely a year-round destination and deserves to be on your list of what to do in Croatia .

This part of Croatia receives 4 distinct seasons, so while the greenery surrounding the lakes is lovely, don’t despair if your trip happens at an off-peak time–not only will there be fewer crowds, but just imagine how beautiful the lakes would look surrounded by fall foliage or snow!

Personally, we have our hearts set on visiting during the fall foliage season one day.

About Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Great article! Looking forward to our May 2020 trip to Plitvice. Thanks for the info. Wish we were young enough to do what you are doing. Keep traveling.

Thank you so much, Sharon! Hope you guys enjoy the park!

Such a beautiful park. I was there when it was entirely covered by snow!

How cool! We’d love to visit during a snowfall one day.

Are there any benches along the way to rest at for the older set that do not have endurance anymore What route would you suggest for the elderly set? Maybe a mile walk would be about it

There are some benches, but it’s also a bit of a climb to most spots. I’d recommend starting at Entrance 1, as you’ll come to the view of the big waterfall almost immediately and can continue from there depending on how you’re feeling.

The postcard view is also a pretty short walk from these coordinates, and you can drive almost all the way there: 44°54’9″ N 15°36’27”

Other than that, you may try reaching out to the park and asking if they have a shuttle from the parking lot to the entrance or consider arranging for a driver. Even walking from the main parking lot to the entrance is a bit of a walk, unfortunately.

This is wonderful! My family and I are going to arrive at plitvice lakes at 1:15.  We are going to stay the night and explore the park till 4 the next day. What routes should we take the first and second day? Thank you!

Thanks, Tina!

In your case, I’d probably do the Upper Lakes the first day since they’re a bit less crowded and you’ll be arriving in the middle of the day. In the early evening, consider driving over to the postcard viewpoint to enjoy that before calling it a night.

The next morning, head to Entrance 1 as soon as (or before) the gates open and enjoy the most iconic spots!

I will be arriving at a busy time (around 10:30), and the next day I will have 2 hours to explore. What routes would you recommend for those times?

With such limited time, I’d personally head right to Entrance 1 and battle the crowds to see as much of the Lower Lakes as you can in that timeframe. Luckily, you’ll come across the iconic view of Veliki Slap almost immediately, so there’s a quick payoff!

If you’re driving yourself, keep in mind that parking can be a challenge, and you’ll likely have a bit of a schlep before officially entering the park.

3. Veliki Slap Waterfall

Right next to the lower lakes, plummeting from 78 meters high, you’ll find the Veliki Slap waterfall. Unlike the smaller falls of Plitvice Lakes National Park, this gem is fed by waters from the Potok River. The others are formed by excess water flowing from the upper lakes into the lower lakes.

The quickest way to get to the waterfall is to enter from entrance 1. Walk along the wooden path, up the stairs to the top of the waterfall, and look out over the impressive landscape.

4. Kozjak Lake

Lake Kozjak is the largest and deepest lake of all the Plitvice lakes. Known as the last of the Upper Lakes, it covers a total length of 2,35 kilometers and is about 48 meters deep. Though you can hike this distance around the lake, you can also take the small ferry across.

Just north of the Plitvice Lakes lies the Mreznice River, an untouched slice of the landscape away from the masses. With the same beautiful colors as the lakes and several waterfalls, it makes the perfect location to go kayaking.

Together with a guide, make your way down the river, catching rapids every now and then. Jump off waterfalls or opt for a more relaxed route as you paddle through the stunning waters.

The starting point of the kayaking tour lies 40 minutes from the entrance of Plitvice Lakes and is easy to reach by car or bus. You can book a kayak tour in advance online. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and shoes that can get wet as you’ll be walking over rocks at times.

Getting Around Plitvice

To experience the natural beauty of Plitvice Lakes, you embark on one of the walking trails in the park. These routes have good signs, making sure you know exactly where to go. The trails are fairly easy, though lots of the wooden walkways don’t have any railing, so always pay attention.

Entrances to the Park

There are two main entrances to the park, which you must choose between when booking a ticket. Entrance 1 lies just above the Lower Lakes, while the southern entrance ( entrance 2 ) is right next to the Upper Lakes. At entrance 1, you’ll also find the powerful Veliki Slap waterfall, which you can admire from a viewing platform.

Tip: There’s plenty of parking available at both entrances, even in peak summer season. Though, expect to walk a bit to the entrance if you’ve booked a later timeslot to enter. We recommend visiting earlier in the day.

Choosing an entrance is especially good if you only want to see a part of the park. However, if you’re exploring all of Plitvice Lakes, we recommend choosing entrance 1, starting at the Lower Lakes, where it’s often a bit quieter.

Trails

There are as many as 8 different routes you can choose between (4 at each entrance), ranging from 3 to 18 kilometers in distance. You can view a map at the entrance and follow the clearly marked signs throughout the park, looping past the stunning sights.

hiking trails plitvice lakes national park croatia

We started from entrance 1 and did route C, which starts at the wonderful Veliki Slap waterfall and Lower Lakes. From there, you cross Kozjak Lake to the Upper Lakes and eventually take the visitor’s train back to entrance 1. This way, you can see all the sights without walking for a very long time. It took us about 5 hours, with lots of photo stops and a break for drinks in between.

Entrance Fee & Opening Times

To be able to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park, you have to order your tickets in advance online via the park’s e-ticket system . Only a limited number of people are allowed into the park to preserve the incredible nature better, so it’s best to book online to avoid having no ticket. During the peak season, we recommend booking your tickets well in advance or a day trip from Split or Zadar.

You’ll have to select an entrance gate and a time you want to enter. This is so crowds are spread out throughout the day. After you enter, you can stay as long as you like. The entrance prices change per month:

Low season: Jan – Mar + Nov – Dec:

  • Adults: 10 EUR (11,25 USD)
  • Children 7 – 18: 4.50 EUR (5.05 USD)

Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes is a must-see on your trip to Croatia and one of the most popular things to do. Here are some tips to make your visit to this incredible location unforgettable:

  • If you’re visiting during the high season, try to go as early as possible and book your ticket in advance through the park’s website. Be patient on the narrow trails as you share them with others. Crowds tend to go down after 3 PM.
  • Plitvice Lakes can get very hot during midday, so come prepared with lightweight clothes, lots of water, sunscreen , and a good hat.

  • There are only a few bins along the trails, so please keep your items with you. Leave no trace and stay on the marked trails in order to preserve this protected area.
  • You won’t need any hiking gear, but do need good shoes! Don’t wear any flip-flops on the wooden trails.
  • It’s possible to visit with kids, but due to the pathways, you can’t bring a stroller.
  • Go to the toilet before entering the park. Though there are a few inside Plitvice Lakes, they’re spread out, and routes may take a bit longer than you think.

Where to Stay

Although you can visit Plitvice Lakes National Park on a day trip from cities like Zadar, Sibenik , or Split , it’s in a beautiful area worth exploring for a few days. There are a few hotels inside the park where you can stay the night before exploring the park. We stayed here next to the park entrance.

Alternatively, only a short drive away, you’ll find more options in Rastovača and cheaper options in Jezerce.

Best Time to Visit Plitvice Lakes

There’s no wrong time to see the incredible Plitvice Lakes, as every season offers a different sight over the protected area. Summer is the most popular time to visit the park, though it’s also the busiest time and a period with less rain (lower water levels).

As it lies in the northern mountains, Plitvice has a different climate than its Mediterranean coast, with slightly cooler temperatures. In spring, the lakes will have more water and powerful falls. In autumn, colors change around the park; in winter, the greenery often sees a layer of snow, creating another magical experience. Note that parts of the park can have limited access when you visit outside of the summer period.

Visiting Plitvice Lakes, Croatia (Avoiding Crowds + Tips)

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes Croatia – the most beautiful national park in the Balkans

Just imagine – 16 lakes, all arranged in cascades between two rivers where the water goes from one river to another. While on the way, the water forms a series of waterfalls.

To make things even better, the water is crystal clear and there are mountains in the picture. With a landscape like that, of course, it is Croatia’s most visited national park – this is Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is also a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997.

Introducing plitvice lakes national park, croatia.

Crystal Clear Water - Plitvice Lakes Croatia

One of the most beautiful National Parks in Europe, the Plitvice Lakes is even more beautiful than the pictures. It is more than just the 16 interconnected lakes. It has spectacular waterfalls, river canyons, tufa formations, travertines, elevated viewpoints and so much more.

As per Wikipedia , the other comparable formations worldwide like Plitvice where tufa formation causes lakes and waterfalls are at Pamukkale in Turkey, Rastoke (Slunj) in Croatia , KRKA National Park in Croatia, Una National Park in Bosnia & Herzegovina – these all I have visited.

Also to add to this list are the Hindu Kush mountains’ Band-e Amir lakes, Yellowstone National Park, Jiuzhaigou in China, and Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

Snake inside the water in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The biodiversity in Plitvice Lakes National Park is so rich – there are at least 75 plant species here that can’t be found anywhere else. If I were an animal, I would have picked THIS place to be my home.

There are 125 bird species, wolves, brown bears, and eagles that live here to name a few. Honestly, you won’t see all these animals but you will surely see amazing fish. We saw a snake too!

Water so slear that you can see the fish - Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Plitvice is one of the oldest parks in South East Europe. It is the best place to visit for nature lovers. Nothing can prepare you for the beauty of the spectacle of Mother Nature in this national park.

On the other hand, nothing can prepare you for the shock of seeing the hordes of tourists lining up to enter this place during the high season.

After all, more than 1 million people visit it every year – and the number is steadily increasing. It is a part of most of many Croatia travel itineraries .

This is where MY HELP comes in, my post will help you figure out how to do Plitvice Lakes right . Yep, read on friends because I’m going to share my best tips for avoiding crowds, share info about photo spots, help you select a hike as per your comfort level and more.

Having visited multiple national parks all over Europe, the beauty of Plitvice Lakes still holds very special in my heart. I want all my readers to enjoy this place as much as I did.

Things to Know Before Visiting Plitvice Lakes + Tips

Should you make a day trip to plitvice lakes.

Stunning Clear Water - Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Avoid making a day trip to the Plitvice Lakes National Park [especially during the peak season] because it will be a stressful experience.

If you make a day trip here from the nearby towns of Zadar or Split, you won’t arrive here before 9 or 10 a.m. and that’s when it gets extremely crowded.

If you’re visiting anytime between June to August, please note that they are peak months. Do not even think of visiting the national park for just a day trip from one of the nearby cities. The crowds are crazy and it will be the most stressful experience. Vacations aren’t supposed to be like that.

If you’re visiting Plitvice Lakes during the low season then you can consider a day trip . If you have the energy to wake up extremely early and arrive here during spring, autumn, or winter – walk around at least 5 km in the park, and then leave then by all means do it.

But again, there’s so much to see in this national park that I highly recommend you take time and explore.

Here are some of the best day trips to Plitvice Lakes National Park that we have hand-picked for you:

  • Full day Plitvice Lakes Day Trip from Zadar : 8-hour tour of Plitvice Lakes that starts from Zadar. This tour doesn’t include the entry tickets for the National Park.
  • Plitvice Lakes Full Day Trip from Split or Trogir : This tour starts from Split or Trogir and includes entry tickets for the National Park too.
  • Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke (Slunj) tour from Zagreb : This tour starts from Zagreb and also includes the nearby Rastoke , which is called the “mini Plitvice Lakes”. Moreover, the national park ticket is also included in the cost of this tour.
  • Plitvice Lakes tour + ticket from Pula / Poreč / Rovinj / Umag : This 12-hour tour includes transfers, the national park ticket, lunch, and a professional guide.

Can You Stay Inside the Plitvice Lakes National Park?

One of the many upper lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Yes. There are just three hotels in Plitvice Lakes National Park where you can stay. There’s Hotel Plitvice , Hotel Bellevue and Hotel Jezero . Yes, they are really inside the national park close to park entrance 2. Entrance 2 is close to the upper lakes.

I don’t know why many websites claim that the park-operated hotels are overpriced – they aren’t. A room in these hotels can be from 70 Euros to 150 Euros per night.

Imagine you save money on getting to the national park on your taxi or the inconvenience of standing in line. Even if you spend 20 euros more by staying inside the national park, it is worth it (at least for me) as compared to staying in a village that’s 10 kilometers away.

Keep in mind that just because your hotel is inside the national park, you still have to buy your ticket for the Plitvice Lakes.

Yes, you can totally skip the queue and just walk in! If you’re not looking to stay inside the national park, then look for accommodation in nearby villages such as Čatrnja, Mukinje, and Rastovaca.

Plitvice Lakes Swimming

The inviting waters of Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Can you swim in Plitvice Lakes? Sorry to break this to you. It is no longer permitted to swim in the lakes or waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park. Before 2006, it was possible to swim in Lake Kozjak.

This beautiful area is sensitive and human influence harms the tufa formation . The process of tufa formation takes centuries as a result of the sedimentation of minerals from water.

The cascades of lakes and waterfalls inside this national park exist because of tufa – you don’t want to spoil that, right? After all, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

If you’re looking for a National Park where you can admire nature and swim, then try the nearby KRKA National Park or Kravice Waterfalls of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I have been to both and I loved them. I prefer the Kravice National Park of Bosnia over the KRKA National Park of Croatia.

Upper and Lower Lakes

Illustration of multi level lakes in Plitvice, Croatia

Sixteen Lakes – wow that’s a lot of lakes to view in just a day or two by walking, no? Well, you will be happy to know that they’re divided into Upper and Lower Lakes to make things easier for you to explore. There are 12 upper lakes and 4 lower lakes. During winter, some parts of the upper lakes may be closed.

How to Avoid the Crowds in Plitvice Lakes (in Summer )

Plitvice Lakes tends to get full in summer

Avoiding crowds is an important aspect of a stress-free travel experience, especially in a place like Plitvice Lakes. It is necessary to make a proper strategy else the crowds will greet you at every turn here.

I have mentioned a few points below that you can keep in mind to skip the crowds. Not just one but you will have to implement a few of these points together to avoid crowds inside the Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Buy Your Tickets Online in Advance

The long lines in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The best way to avoid crowds in Plitvice Lakes is by saving yourself time in standing in the ticket queue. Queues are very long in summer so buy the tickets on the internet from before.

You will need to select your date and time for entering the national park at the time you purchase the tickets. If available, your time slot can be as early as 7 a.m. or as late as 5 p.m .

Reach Super Early

When I say reach the Plitvice Lakes early, I mean earlier than early. The day-trippers start arriving between 9 and 10 and that’s when the national park starts getting jam-packed .

As mentioned in the last point, buy your tickets online and select an early morning time slot like 7 a.m. If in some cases you can’t find park tickets, then just show up at the entry area at 7 a.m . Of course this is why it helps if you book an overnight stay nearby.

..Or Reach in the Late Afternoon

Are you not a morning person? Neither am I. If 7 or 8 am slots are too early for you then enter in the afternoon to avoid the queues. The ticket price is cheaper in the late afternoon after 4 p.m .

The park closes by 8 p.m. in summer but much earlier in winter. If you enter at 4, you won’t have a lot of time to spend inside but you can most likely move faster because the trails won’t be jam-packed.

Pick the Longer Trail

Walking along the lake on trail K in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

There are 7 walking routes or walking trails and they are of different lengths. I have a separate section in this post with details about the trails. Most of the people pick the smallest hiking trail. Veliki Slap / Big Waterfall is the most famous spot and tends to get very crowded after 10 a.m.

In order to avoid crowds, pick the longer trail. Someone also mentioned that they avoided crowds by walking in the opposite direction of the trail.  Most of the smaller trails are crowded, the bigger trails are beautiful and totally worth it. The park is just so beautiful that you won’t even realize that you’ve walked so much.

Take a Detour

If you reach the park early, take a detour to Veliki Slap to avoid the crowds and come back to your original trail. Your entry ticket will also include a map on the opposite side, which isn’t difficult to read. Make the most of it.

Entrance 2 is a Lot Less Crowded

I mentioned a few times that the park has two entrances. Park entrance 1 is closer to the lower lakes and entrance 2 is closer to the upper lakes. Most of the people enter from the first entrance and hence it is more crowded than Entrance 2. The parking at Plitvice Lakes is both at entrances 1 and 2.

The Best Spots and Viewpoints inside Plitvice Lakes

If you’re like me and suffer from a massive FOMO (fear of missing out), then take the biggest walking trail so that you don’t miss out on even a single thing. However, if you’re short on time or low on energy, you will have to take one of the smaller trails or do a part of the bigger trail. In any case, here are some of my favorite stops:

Mali Prštavac Slap and Veliki Prštavac Waterfalls

Mali Prštavac Slap - the most beautiful waterfall in Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Going through all my photos of Plitvice Lakes, I realized this spot was really the most beautiful one. In fact, we loved it so much that we walked around here twice. This is Mali Prštavac Slap – one of the waterfalls in the upper lakes.

Us near Veliki Prštavac Waterfall in Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Actually, there’s a series of waterfalls that’s together – Veliki Prštavac Slap and Mali Prštavac Slap. Mali means small and Veliki means big. Slap means waterfall. There is an area where it is all together – Burgeti Lake, Gradinsko Lake, Veliki (Big) Prstavac, and Mali (small) Prstavac. Apart from these, there are many smaller waterfalls here.

The water here is super clear and it looks like one of those unbelievable AI-created natural landscapes that look too good to be true. The splash of blue water against the lush greenery is truly stunning at these waterfalls.

Galovački Buk Waterfall

Galovački Buk Waterfall is also in the upper lakes area and very close to. The water is clearer than most of the spots and the series of waterfalls look fantastic. It took me a while to realize what this spot is called and where it is.

The extremely beautiful Galovački Buk inside plitvice lakes

This series of waterfalls is in the upper lakes area. This waterfall isn’t as big as Veliki Slap (the most famous and the biggest waterfall in Plitvice Lakes National Park), but in our opinion is the most beautiful one.

Galovački Buk is 25 meters high and falls from Milino Lake and Galovac Lake to Gradinsko Lake. The result is truly spectacular.

To be honest, there is a little bit of confusion on the internet because if you google the pictures of Galovački Buk and Mali Prštavac Slap – the internet will show you the same waterfall for both names. They are two separate waterfalls.

If I hadn’t clicked a picture of the signboard next to Mali Prštavac Slap, I would have never known which one is which because the park is massive.

San and I in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Viewpoint Near Veliki Slap / Big Waterfall (There are three)

Veliki Slap means big waterfall and is the most famous spot in the entire National Park. The Veliki Slap is at the end of the lower lakes.

Yes, the waterfall is surely beautiful but the best viewpoints to see the Plitvice Lakes are right over Veliki Slap. Veliki Slap and the surrounding limestone canyon are included on every walking route in Plitvice Park.

The big waterfall is lovely but the real beauty of it all lies further up on the other side of the canyon from where you can see lakes cascading into several waterfalls inside the huge canyon with the Big Waterfall on the right-hand side.

Viewpoint Near the Big Waterfall - Veliki Slap in Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

There are at least three viewpoints on top of Veliki Slap and they’re not difficult to find. The view is awesome and a little different from all three. Here is how you can find them. (You may want to bookmark the below paragraph before visiting the national park.)

In the first viewpoint, you will see Veliki Slap behind   Sastavci Waterfalls (Sastavci Slap).  This is the most famous image of Plitvice Lakes that’s used everywhere.

The picture on top was shot on my GoPro. I visited during an extremely sunny day and the excessive daylight ruined my photo. Below is another image that I found of this spot on the internet. I wanted to show you both so that you understand how this place looks with and without harsh sunlight.

The Viewpoint on top of Veliki Slap in Plitvice Lakes National park Croatia

As you face the Big Waterfall, take the steps that are on the left side that go behind the waterfall. You will eventually be on a higher path that goes around the waterfall.

Follow that path and you’ll reach the viewpoint where the most famous photo of the Plitvice Lakes is taken that’s used in most of the travel brochures. If you’re confused, then head on trail C or K after the big waterfall. You will soon reach the viewpoints. We also went up on trail B .

That’s not the only viewpoint. If you continue to explore the path that goes up on the other side of the canyon, you will see other viewpoints like this one here. Here are the other two viewpoints. The below one is particularly my favorite one because the time I visited, the water here looked lovely turquoise.

One of the viewpoints above the Big Waterfall - Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

I liked the second viewpoint more because there was more to see. You may not noticed but the pictures of the first viewpoint are really zoomed in. It doesn’t look as striking as the second one looks in reality but of course, in the pictures it does.

Here is the third viewpoint that’s on top of the big waterfall. This viewpoint also shows you the great cascades,  which can’t be seen from the other viewpoints.

Panorama viewpoint on top of Veliki slap in Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Again, because of very harsh sunlight, my picture from the third viewpoint isn’t as good as many others that you will see on the internet. Here’s a better picture of the view from here. This is a highly zoomed-in picture.

Which one do you like the most? Viewpoints 1, 2, or 3 – let me know in the comments.

Tomićevo Pogledalo Viewpoint on Stubica Elevation

This viewpoint is on the trail that leads to Stubica Elevation from Lake Kozjak. There is a gazebo called Tomićevo Pogledalo where you can look at the panoramic view and see Lake Prošćansko and Lake Ciginovac. You will find this spot on walking trail K.

Tomićevo Pogledalo Viewpoint in Plitvice Lakes Croatia

As you go down from Stubica elevation, you will also come across several spots from between the trees from where you can see the upper lakes and this little waterfall.

If you want to take pictures of Plitvice Lakes that are a little different from others’ photos, then go on top of Stubica Elevation and find such viewpoints.

Šupljara cave

The path going inside Šupljara cave in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Šupljara cave is located in the lower lakes section, near Kaluđerovac Lake. There is a path that goes inside this cave. Don’t take a detour to just see this lake if you’re not visiting the lower lakes because it is pretty ok. This was the only cave that I saw in the entire park, so for me, this was one of the most memorable spots.

Šupljara cave, Plitvice Lakes

Novakovića Lake

Novakovića Lake is the lowest lake in Plitvice National Park, located at an altitude of 503 meters above sea level. It is one of the smallest lakes in the group of Lower Lakes.

The lake is fed by waters from Kaludjerovac Lake via a meters two-meter-high travertine barrier, creating a series of tiny waterfalls. There is a nice wooded path leading over this barrier.

The Great Cascades

There are many other spots inside the Plitvice Lakes National Park that are stunning. I really liked these cascades too. You will see the cascades at many different points in both upper and lower lakes.

Getting Around inside Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is pretty big but you don’t have to cover it all by just walking. You can take boats and trains inside for free. You need to hang on to your entry ticket and show it while getting onto an electric boat.

We did not end up taking a boat because there were a lot of people waiting so we decided to walk instead.

Seven Routes inside Plitvice Lakes National Park

The wooden walking ramp in Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Now that I have mentioned all the amazing spots inside the national park, you must be wondering which walking route you should pick to see them. I have gathered the details for you for that as well. There are seven suggested routes inside the Plitvice Lakes National Park and they are called “Lake Tour Programs”. You can do them by walking and also take a boat in between.

Routes that start from Entrance 1

  • Program A – 3.5 km , Short – this route covers the big waterfall, and the lower lakes – Novakovića brod, Kaluđerovac, Gavanovac, and Milanovac. You also go on the Kozjak Bridge and towards a part of the canyon. It is the most crowded trail.
  • Program B – 4 km , Short – This route covers the big waterfall, the lower lakes, a boat ride over Kozjak Lake, a panoramic train, and a part of the canyon.
  • Program C – 8 km , Long – Highly Recommended – This route will show you both the upper and the lower lakes, a big waterfall, and many smaller waterfalls like Veliki Prštavac and Mali Prštavac. This route also includes a boat ride and a panoramic train ride.
  • Program K1 – 18.3, Very Long – This is the one we took. Actually, Program K starts from both entrances 1 and 2. You can do this circle from any entrance instead, we did from entrance 1. This route includes everything – the lower lakes, upper lakes, big waterfall, and Stubica elevation. Instead of taking a boat over Lake Kozjak, you walk along the shore, and as a result, you see so much more.

One of the many waterfalls near the upper lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Routes that start from Entrance 2

  • Program E – 5.1 KMs, Medium – This route only includes the upper lakes and Prštavci waterfalls. If you have to do one of the shorter trails, then pick this. It doesn’t have the big waterfall but has the smaller Prštavci waterfalls which I found more beautiful.
  • Program F – 4.6 KMs, Medium – This route includes the lower lakes and the big waterfall. You miss out on the lovely Prštavci waterfalls but you will end up seeing the big waterfall and the viewpoints on top of the big waterfall.
  • Program H – 8.9 KMs – Long – Highly Recommended – This route will show you the upper lakes, lower lakes, the big waterfall, and the viewpoints. There’s also the boat ride on Lake Kozjak. It shows you most of what the park has to offer apart from Stubica Elevation.
  • Program K2 – 18.3, Very Long – Program K1 and K2 are both the same routes but the numbers are different to signify the different entrances where they begin. This route includes everything – the upper lakes, lower lakes, the big waterfall, and the Stubica Elevation.

If you want to see the most of Plitvice Lakes National Park but don’t want to walk as much as we did, then pick the trail H or C. If you want to pick a shorter trail and see the upper lakes and the smaller but lovelier waterfalls, then pick the trail E. I highly recommend you study the routes to make a suitable Plitvice Lakes itinerary for yourself.

How to Get to Plitvice Lakes National Park?

It is easy to reach the Plitvice Lakes by car, bus, or even a taxi. Many taxi guys wait at bus stations and are happy to match the bus ticket price when there are at least 10 people.

Reaching Plitvice Lakes by Car

Driving to Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb or Zadar, Croatia

It is so easy to travel within Europe in a rented car and turns out to be cheaper than taking buses and trains when there are 2 or more people. I wonder why San and I did not do this enough in our backpacking days. I highly recommend you rent a car in Zagreb or Zadar or Split or Karlovac and arrive here at your own pace.

You can reach Plitvice Lakes in 2.5 to 3 hours from Zagreb on E71. You can make your route faster by switching to D42 or D1 from Karlovac city. From Zadar, the drive will take you 1.5 hours on E71 and D1. From Split, it will take you 2.5 – 3.5 hours on E71.

Reaching Plitvice Lakes on Bus

Shuttles and Buses to Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

You can easily reach the Plitvice Lakes on a bus from Zagreb , Zadar, or Split. Buses that run between Zagreb to Zadar OR Zagreb and Split cross Plitvice Lakes.

We arrived here from Pula with a change in Karlovac. Honestly, at that time we had no idea and we just reached the bus station and asked the ticket seller for help. It worked well for us and we waited for just 45 minutes for our bus. Of course, we had a general idea of our direction.

We did not even have a hotel reservation. Our bus driver dropped us outside Camp Korana , which is just 3 km away from the park.

How to Reach Plitvice Lakes from Your Hotel

If you get a hotel near the Plitvice Lakes, you will most likely stay in Čatrnja, Mukinje, or Rastovaca. I did not find information

Staying in one of the park-operated hotels will make it easier for you to get to the national park because you can simply walk in or if you’re further away, there will be a shuttle bus for you.

Like many National Parks in the Balkans , the Plitvice Lakes also have different ticket prices for different seasons. The tickets are more expensive in summer as compared to other months. Here is a breakdown of the cost based on the season for 2023 and 2024.

Wondering what is the afternoon time here? From June 1 to August 31, it is 4 PM, and from September 1 to September 30 is 3 PM. If you buy a double-day ticket, the price is not double.

Eating Inside Plitvice Lakes

Most of the restaurants inside the Plitvice Lakes complex are expensive. I’d say they were at least three times more expensive than other places in Croatia. There was a lot of waiting and most of the restaurants mainly sold burgers and chips.

If you want my recommendation, check out Licka Kuca restaurant near Entrance 1. They have good salads, platters, polenta, and apple strudel. Meat lovers will enjoy this restaurant because of local Croatian specialties .

Best Time to Visit the Plitvice Lakes

Lovely flowers inside Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

We visited in summer – the water was very blue but the park was crowded. Spring and Autumn months are recommended to avoid the crowds. Moreover, it is cheaper to visit Plitvice Lakes during this time. The tickets are also cheaper in winter but the water isn’t as blue. Of course, the lakes are beautiful all year round but every season has its own charm.

I can only imagine how lovely the park would be during the autumn or spring months. Imagine the contrast of red and brown leaves against the turquoise-blue waters – wow. Or, imagine flowers around the lakes and waterfalls. I’m sure Plitvice Lakes look stunning during winter but I’d personally not visit during that time considering how some part of the upper lakes is usually closed.

How Many Days Do You Need for Plitvice Lakes?

Stay overnight in one of the nearby villages so that you can enter the park early and avoid peak crowds. Do not make a day trip here, the park deserves way more than that.

Other Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Wear comfortable shoes.

Wear comfortable shoes in Plitvice Lakes National Park

This is the most obvious point but many people miss it. Even if you take the shortest walking path inside the Plitvice Lakes National Park, you will still have to walk a lot. Be kind to your feet and wear comfortable shoes.

Don’t just wear a brand new pair of shoes right before the hike, because c’mon you need to “break your shoe” first. Instead, wear your slightly older tried and tested shoes.

Bring your own food to save money

The entry for Plitvice Lakes isn’t exactly cheap but you can save money by carrying your own food. If you want to eat at the restaurants that are inside, then keep in mind that they’re a bit expensive.

Consider Getting a 2 Day Ticket

Croatia's Plitvice Lakes have the clearest water

Take your time to explore and make the most of your visit. It is possible to buy a multi-day ticket. Consider getting a 2-Days ticket for the park if you’re not in the mood to walk a lot in a single day.

The Park has two entrances

Plitvice Lakes National Park has two entrances – 1 and 2. Entrance 1 is closer to the lower lakes and entrance 2 is closer to the upper lakes. During winter, entrance 2 is usually closed.

Consider staying in one of the park-operated hotels to avoid the parking fee

If you’re visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park by driving here in your own car, then be mindful of the parking fee. You can avoid it by staying in one of the park-operated hotels.

Unlike many websites say – not all the park-recommended hotels aren’t overpriced. The time we visited Plitvice Lakes National Park, we were backpacking and we pitched our tent in Camp Korena . It is also one of the park’s recommended places to stay but it is very affordable.

Plitvice Lakes National Park has an App – Use it

Consider downloading the mobile app to study the trails. Instead of spending hours on the internet and hunting for information that you need about Plitvice Lakes National Park, why not install just one free app that’s run by the park tourism? Try it.

Visiting Plitvice Lakes with Baby? Yes or No?

The wooden walking path in Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

I’m all for traveling with a baby and I have multiple posts that encourage new parents to do so. However, Plitvice Lakes National Park isn’t the best place for you to bring your baby in a stroller.

Why? Well because when you’re inside the national park, the only way to walk from one place to another is by taking one of the walking paths. Taking your baby’s pram on the wooden ramp isn’t going to be comfortable for you and those who are around you. The path goes up and down has steps. You will cause a traffic jam to an already jammed-up space.

It isn’t easy to take your baby on your arm and walk so much, and it isn’t easy taking pushchairs and strollers. If you’re traveling with a baby then consider skipping Plitvice and heading to Krka National Park instead.

Where to Stay to visit Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice lakes lakes hotels, hotels in plitvice national park.

There are only three hotels inside Plitvice Lakes National Park. They are Hotel Plitvice , Hotel Bellevue and Hotel Jezero . Yes, they are really inside the national park close to entrance 2. You can really skip the queue and walk inside the national park but of course, you have to buy your ticket. They are priced between EUR 70 per night for two to EUR 300.

Places to Stay near Plitvice Lakes

Here are a few guest houses, hotels, and campgrounds near the Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Camp Korana (They have Bungalows Too – Bungalows Korana)

Our camping place in Camp Korana near Plitvice Lakes Croatia

The time I went to Plitvice Lakes, I stayed in Camp Korana . It is a camping place that’s next to the River Korana. Yes, the same river that is also in Plitvice Lakes National Park. The best part is that they have free shuttles to the National Park and back .

They also have bungalows, and that part is called Bungalows Korana .

Outdoor restaurant in Camp Korana near Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Camp Korana is essentially a place for camper vans but we entered without a van just with our tents. This place is very big from the inside. We visited in the peak summer season – August but still there appeared to be a lot of free space inside.

Camp Korana Swimming Spot by Korana River - camping place near Plitvice Lakes Croatia

We also saw bungalows inside and their website advertises that there are 47 of them. So, if camping isn’t your thing, then you can also rent a bungalow here. There’s also a decent restaurant here and a bar. There’s wifi that actually works in the entire campground.

Green Lakes House

Green Lakes House is one of the most affordable places to stay that’s super close to Plitvice Lakes. It is 2 km away from entrance 2 of the national park.

This guest house also has an air conditioner, that you will surely need if you’re visiting Croatia in summer. They have a dining area that you can share with other travelers. They also offer free WiFi. The rooms here cost between 40 – 50 EUR per night.

House Flora in Rastovaca

House Flora is just 700 meters away from the Plitvice Lakes National Park’s entrance 1. If you want to save money by staying outside the national park, you can’t get any closer than this! The rooms sell out fast and are for 80 – 100 EUR.

Where to Go After Plitvice Lakes?

Plitvice Lakes is located in Central Croatia and if you drive for just 20 kilometers, you will arrive at the Bosnian border. Here are some amazing places where you can go after visiting Plitvice Lakes:

Una National Park, Bosnia

Una National Park is very close to the Croatia-Bosnia border. It is just 70 kilometers away from Plitvice Lakes. We have visited Bosnia & Herzegovina twice and we love it. It is as beautiful as Croatia, minus the crowds. There are two big waterfalls inside Una National Park and they’re spectacular.

Slunj – Rastoke (Mini Plitvice Lakes) and Mjesto Primišlje

MoDem Festival's Killer Location - Psytrance Festivals 2017

Slunj town is 25 km away from Plitvice Lakes – it is totally under the radar and you can visit the historical center here called Rastoke. Here Slunjčica River joins Korana River and creates something that’s called Mini Plitvice Lakes .

Primslje is around 15 km away from Slunj and is just 38 kilometers away from Plitvice Lakes. I have visited (and camped here) twice. It is actually the location for the Modem festival and I’m sure it is much better to visit it without the festival. Here Mrežnica River creates multiple pools and waterfalls. You can camp here at Campsite Vrela Mrežnice.

KRKA National Park

We visited KRKA National Park this year (2019) and enjoyed it. Unlike Plitvice, you can swim here. It is nowhere as beautiful as the Plitvice Lakes but swimming makes the experience worthwhile.

Zadar is 119 Kilometers away from Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is a historical coastal town that is a famous tourist destination in Croatia.

Kravice Waterfalls, Bosnia

Kravice Waterfalls are 337 Kilometers away from Plitvice Lakes National Park. These waterfalls are in Bosnia & Herzegovina and are truly spectacular. You can swim here too. Read my post about Kravice Waterfalls for more information.

Have you visited the Plitvice Lakes, Croatia?

If yes, did you like it as much as I did? What were your favorite spots inside the national park? Also, I’d love to know if you saw crowds here and what are your tips for avoiding them.

A first timer’s guide to plitvice lakes national park.

tour croazia plitvice

Croatia’s oldest and largest national park, Plitvice Lakes has long been renowned for its pristine natural beauty… but there is more to discover here than meets the eye. Beyond the terraced lakes and tumbling cascades lie a region home to fascinating history, rich traditions, and warm, friendly people. Here, Tasteful Croatian Journeys shares our guide for guests visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park for the first time. From practical information to choosing the right trail, this guide covers everything you need to know.

Walking trail over the lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's most famous national park

About Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park consists of 16 crystalline lakes, emerald-blue in color and connected by a series of more than 90 cascades and waterfalls.

The park has been divided into two sections, the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes, based on their geological features. The twelve Upper Lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock. The names of the lakes are Prošćansko Jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko Jezero, Malo Jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino Jezero, Gradinsko Jezero, Burgeti, and Kozjak. The four Lower Lakes were formed in permeable limestone and cut deep into a canyon amid dramatic cliffs. They are Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod.

A series of wooden footbridges and pathways snake over the lakes and around their shores providing gentle trails for visitors to wander, explore, and take in the breathtaking views. Portions of the park are also connected by electric boats and a “panoramic train” (this is not actually a train as it does not run on a track – rather, it is a very long bus).

Highlights within the park include Veliki Slap, also known as the Great Waterfall. At 78 m high, it is the tallest waterfall not only the park, but in all of Croatia. From certain viewpoints, the Sastavci waterfalls appear to be an extension of this, creating a dramatic scene from which the Korana River springs up and flows north toward the town of Karlovac. Numerous viewpoints throughout the park provide stunning views. The eastern ridge of the canyon which overlooks the Lower Lakes provides particularly beautiful views which will surely be familiar to those who have seen images of the park in magazines or on postcards.

The History of Plitvice Lakes National Park

In the sixteenth century, the area now known as Plitvice Lakes National Park was home to the Croatian Military Frontier which acted as a borderland of Hapsburg Austria to the Ottoman Empire. Perhaps it was fear of the Turks that inspired some to refer to these lands as “the devil’s gardens,” or perhaps it was simply the deep awe with which people regarded the dense woods surrounding the lakes. Legends were formed about this isolated and unexplored territory, telling stories of fairies, giants and other mystical creatures. Over the next few hundred years, the area saw many changes in rule with even Napoleon briefly presiding over the region. Marked by frequent turmoil, it remained largely unpopulated throughout that time.

The late 1800s marks the beginning of tourism in the region, with hotels erected for visiting Austrian royalty. In fact, some of the hiking trails developed during that time still exist today. Flash forward to 1949, and Plitvice Lakes National Park was officially opened, receiving UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Tourism was booming in the 1980s, and the national park was one of then Yugoslavia’s most popular attractions. However, on Easter Sunday in March 1991, things took a tragic turn when Plitvice Lakes became the site of the first armed confrontation of the Croatian War of Independence. The rising tensions between Serbs and Croats led to shots fired which resulted in two deaths, twenty wounded, and four hundred tourists evacuated. The park was held by Serb rebels and hotels and other facilities used as barracks until August 1995 when the Croatian Army retook the region.

Today, admiring the beauty of the lakes and their glittering falls, it is hard to imagine the blood that once spilled on this soil, or the landmines which littered the forest.

Choosing the Right Trail

Plitvice Lakes National Park provides seven recommended routes exploring both the Upper and Lower Lakes. The park refers to these routes as “programs,” each with its own circuit identified by markers throughout the park. Each program has a corresponding letter and is color coded based on starting point. Visitors entering the park at Entrance 1 can choose between four routes, marked in green. The four routes beginning at Entrance 2 are marked in orange. Info panels at the park’s entrances also display the routes, and maps are available at info points.

Maps at Entrance 1 of Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The routes vary in distance and therefore in the length of time needed to complete them. The shortest route takes roughly 2 hours and covers many of the park’s highlights. The longest route can take up to 8 hours and tours both the upper and lower lakes. All seven of the park’s programs can be found on their website .

Walking trail options and map at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

For visitors with only one day at Plitvice Lakes National Park, we recommend “Program B” starting at Entrance 1. This route covers the Lower Lakes and provides a great overview of what the park has to offer. It will satisfy travelers who are looking to experience the park’s main attractions, see stunning scenery, take beautiful photos, and connect with nature. Many of Plitvice’s most recognizable vistas will be seen on this route. If staying a second day, we recommend following up with “Program E” to cover the Upper Lakes beginning at Entrance 2. The combination of those two programs will cover the entire lakes area of the park.

Examples of different types of trails in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The walking trails in the park are well maintained and safe. The vast majority of the paths are flat, though in some areas you may find stairs or an incline. In general, however, the trails are not challenging and appropriate for a variety of ages and fitness levels. Wooden trails snake over the lakes while dirt paths or stone walkways connect other areas. Be sure to exercise caution when on uneven surfaces. Mist from the waterfalls can also cause some areas to be slippery.

The boat and "panoramic train" (shuttle bus) within Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Some of the programs involve an electric boat or panoramic train ride in addition to the walking trails. These provide a relaxing and scenic way to cover more ground at the park. Your entrance ticket should be kept on you at all times and grants access to both the boat and train. Schedules vary with season, so be sure to check the timetable at one of the info points.

The forest beyond the lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Beyond the Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park encompasses an area of just under 300 square kilometers with the lakes themselves comprising just 1% of this expanse. The remainder of the park is made up of a wooded forest of beech, fir and pine trees which is home to deer, bears, wolves, wildcats and rare bird species – a paradise for nature lovers and curious travelers alike.

In addition to the walking routes which circle the Lower and Upper Lakes, hiking trails provide the opportunity to explore the wooded areas and surrounding mountains. Beyond the park, this region is a wonderful place to enjoy activities such as river kayaking, cycling, horseback riding, ziplining, and more. Our Tasteful Croatian Journeys Concierge, Mirela, is happy to make these arrangements for our travelers. Roughly 30 minutes north of Plitvice Lakes National Park is the small town of Rastoke. Popular among tourists for its cascading waterfalls, this village provides a nice opportunity to stop and stretch one’s legs when making the drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb.

Just outside the park several restaurants with more expansive menus can be found. More on those and the hotels below.

Guides – A guide is not required to tour Plitvice Lakes National Park and the well-marked routes make the park easy to navigate on one’s own. However, for those seeking deeper insight to the park’s ecology and history, we highly recommend a private guided tour. Not only will a local guide share their valuable knowledge about the national park, but also about the region, its culture, and its unique traditions.

What to W ear – When touring the park, it is important to wear the appropriate clothing and footwear. Sneakers, hiking boots, or comfortable walking shoes are recommended with a non-slip sole that is suitable for a variety of surfaces such as wood, stone and dirt. Do not wear flip-flops! Mist from the waterfalls or rain showers can also cause wet conditions for which a waterproof jacket is advisable. In the summer, lightweight clothing as well as a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock are recommended. In cooler temperatures, plan on long pants and heavier clothing. Be sure to bring a bottle of water as it is important to stay hydrated.

The Plitvice Holiday Resort and Fenomen Plitvice Resort, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Where to Stay – There are a number of government run hotels located at Entrance 2 of the park. These include Hotel Jezero , Hotel Plitvice , and Hotel Bellevue . They all provide simple but clean and affordable accommodation with an ideal location exploring the lakes. For something more unique, consider one of the following.

  • Plitvice Holiday Resort – This complex offers a little bit of everything, from bungalows and lake houses to tipi camps and RV parking – but the real gem are the treehouses which house up to 4 people in elevated apartments set among pines just across from a small manmade lake.
  • Fenomen Plitvice Resort – The most luxurious of Plitvice Lakes accommodation, the Fenomen is a 4-star property located within the boundaries of the national park, a short walk from the peak of the highest waterfall. The property is made up of beautifully designed wood cabins which retain the traditional style of the region while offering travelers a comfortable and stylish abode. One-bedroom suites feature fireplaces, with a basket a wood ready for you to create your cozy indoor respite from the wilderness.
  • Hotel Degenija – This 4-star family-run property exudes warmth and hospitality from the moment you enter. Rooms are tasteful, clean and comfortable, but the real draw is the lovely outdoor swimming pool set on a hill with a view of the surrounding mountains. Hotel Degenija also features two restaurants, detailed further below.

Where to Eat – The cuisine of Croatia’s rugged and mountainous interior reflects the rich variety of natural ingredients available to the region. Here you will find a great number of restaurants offering rural, traditional meals, which focus on wild game, freshwater fish, and an array of hearty vegetables. National Restaurant Lička Kuća , located just outside Entrance 1 of Plitvice Lakes National Park, is an homage to the region and its cuisine. The enormous restaurant is decorated in the traditional style with artifacts from the region on display for visitors. In the center of the restaurant, an open hearth displays lamb roasting on a spit and “ peka ” (a hearty meat and vegetable dish) cooking under an iron dome. The restaurant makes use of regional recipes and locally sourced products. Farther afield, Hotel Degenija has two restaurants which have become popular dining spots for both locals and in-the-know travelers alike. The first is the recently renovated Restaurant Degenija which is well known for its quality cuisine, ranging from traditional meat dishes to grilled local trout to freshly made pizzas. The second is Bistro & Caffe Plum , a stylish café which offers international cuisine and impressive cocktails in a modern space with an inviting terrace. Finally, if seeking something a bit upscale, try Restoran Kozjak at the Fenomen Plitvice Resort. The interior resembles a modern hunting lodge with rustic wood ceilings and antlers as décor. The menu features traditional meals with a sophisticated touch, such as smoked trout bruschetta or ravioli stuffed with honey and traditional basa cheese from the Lika region.

One of them, the rugged Mount Risnjak, rises to a modest 5013 feet (1528m), but its real charm lies in its vast meadows and sprawling forests, as well as the numerous critters that inhabit them.

These landscapes are reservoirs of surprising biodiversity—bears, wolves, otters, and lynx call it home. Venture inside to observe the wildlife and enjoy magnificent views stretching to the Adriatic coast.

Gorski Kotar amazes with its mountaineous karst terrain.

Mrežnica cascades and waterfalls perfect for rafting

Cascading Mrežnica

The serene beauty and pristine waters of Mrežnica are best enjoyed from a raft. As you navigate the numerous tufa cascades and sparkling waterfalls, you’ll witness the rich flora and fauna that adorns the lush banks of this 40 miles (64 km) long river. And if you ever get tired, replenish your energy with a sip of the clean, chilly spring water.

Željava Air Base

Explore the eerie underground tunnels left over from the Cold War, then witness a fascinating relic of the past—the abandoned Douglas C-47 plane, a perennial favorite among adventurous tourists looking for a good photo-op.

Lim Channel

Although many people call it a fjord, this 35-kilometer-long channel is actually a submerged karst canyon. It boasts show-stopping views and is home to many saltwater delicacies that are staples of local seafood menus.

Fortress of Motovun

This medieval town is probably the most eye-catching destination of inland Istria. Set on a hill 886 feet (270m) above sea level, it boasts pastoral views of the hills and vineyards surrounding it. If you’re lucky, you might even look down at the clouds from this high-perched village with a rich tradition of fine dining.

City of Rovinj

With its romantic charm of a fishing town and a beautiful sea promenade, Rovinj has been stealing hearts for years. Each day you will hike and bike for between four and six hours. The mountainous karst terrain can be challenging and the weather unforgiving. On occasion, you might have to do some scrambling but there are always easier ways of getting around the difficult parts of the trail! That said, if you are looking for adventure and up to the task, you’ll be rewarded immensely.

  • Backpack for daily tours, climbs and hikes

  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Bike shorts and gloves optional (but recommended)
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Hiring a local guide means getting a chance to see all the usual tourist spots as well as the hidden gems in the area. As a local, your guide can share interesting facts about the localities, take you to less crowded places, and give you the best authentic experience possible!

Croatia is home to mostly steady weather, but you should be prepared with the right gear nonetheless. It’s pretty mild and sunny this time of year, but the same white cloud shielding you from sunbeams can easily turn into a stormcloud within minutes. Rest assured, your guide will know the correct course of action if the weather throws a curveball!

You will be joining a group that usually consists of 4-7 people. Pricing is per person.

The group gets confirmed at the moment that at least 4 people pay the 30% deposit. At that time, the group will be informed that the trip has been confirmed, and therefore that you can start booking your flights to Croatia.

If you are an individual traveler, you can join the group. The guide will be adding travelers until the minimum group size to confirm the trip can be guaranteed. There are no supplements to individual travelers, as they will share a room. However, if you want to stay solo or if there is an odd pair of travelers, you can have your own room for an additional fee. Contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

Min. age requirement:

  • Everybody over the age of 18 is welcome on this hiking adventure.
  • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the hike on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

If your group has hikers under the age of 18 , contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

Once you book, either by paying in full or by a deposit, you’ll be connected to your guide, Kristijan. You’ll be able to talk with him about the details of this trip.

Your 30% deposit will be fully refundable until 2 months prior to the trip. All deposits are refundable at a later date if the trip is not yet confirmed.

The trip date will be confirmed when the minimum group size (4) is reached, at least 3 months before the tour. If the group minimum size is not reached, the guide can cancel the trip the latest 2 months before the trip departure. Please note that the likelihood of trip not happening is very low.

As stated above, once the trip is confirmed by the guide, and you paid the 30% deposit, the cancellation policy stated below applies, and deposits are no longer refundable. The remaining 70% of the amount is paid the latest 2 months before the trip.

Secure your spot for the following season with a 10% deposit! This tour gets sold out very quickly, but with early-bird booking, you’ll be the first one to know. Pick the month that suits you best and we’ll let you know once the dates are live—don’t risk missing out on your bucket list adventure!

  • Only 10% of the total amount should be paid as a deposit upon booking. This deposit is non-refundable, but can be transferred to another 57hours adventure in case the dates don’t suit you by the end of the year.
  • Once the set dates for the following season are live, you can confirm your booking by the end of this year by paying another 20% of the total amount.
  • The final balance is due 3 months (90 days) prior to departure.

In case you need to cancel the trip, the following cancellation costs would be incurred:

  • 90% of the price of the trip is refundable before the group is guaranteed
  • 70% of the tour price is refundable if canceled 59 days or more before departure, once the trip has been confirmed
  • 50% of the tour price is refundable if canceled 30-59 days before departure
  • 25% of the tour price is refundable if canceled 16-29 days before departure
  • 0% of the price of the trip if it is canceled 15 days before departure.

In the event that the minimum number of people to confirm the trip is not reached, your guide can cancel the departure at most 2 months before the start of the trip. Please note the trips are expected to reach the minimum number of people soon, and the likelihood of trip not happening is very low.

We highly recommended that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more.

As we’ve recently seen, travel plans can be abruptly halted, so it’s a good idea to purchase travel insurance that covers canceled flights, natural disasters, and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans. For peace of mind, we suggest you consider both options of insurance.

If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!

To get to Zagreb, most people fly into Franjo Tuđman Airport in Zagreb. There are two options of reaching your accommodation in Zagreb from the airport, by public transport or taxi:

  • There is a shuttle bus service run by Croatia Airlines offering simple transfers to the city’s bus station. The service runs every 30 min, on the hour and half past. The price of a single transfer currently stands at 30 HRK per person.
  • Standard taxis are readily available outside of the airport.
  • You can arrange private transportation by the guide for an additional fee with prior notice.

Other options include flying into Venice, Italy, or Beograd, Serbia, both 4 hours away from Zagreb. If you opt for a bus ride to Zagreb, there are two easy ways to reach the hotel from the main station, by tram and by taxi.

Once you and your guide agree on the details of your itinerary, your guide will suggest the best place to meet, most likely at the Jagerhorn Hotel .

57hours is committed to providing safe outdoor adventure experiences. We require all guides using our platform to have a COVID-19 safety plan and to make the details of that plan accessible to travelers. In most cases, group sizes will be reduced, guides will avoid overcrowded locations, and other safety measures will be met depending on the location and activity.

We also expect clients to respect local regulations and take measures to protect themselves, their guides, and the communities they’re traveling to. For more information on COVID-19 measures in Croatia, please refer to Croatia’s official COVID-19 travel guidelines .

Please contact us if you have any questions or require further information. We are happy to provide you with the most up-to-date information!

You will receive mail confirmation.

Our guides will contact you as soon as new dates get added or a spot gets freed up.

Hi there, I’m Somtochukwu. Can you try pronouncing that? I've always gone by Somto (Sohm-toe). I'm a child of Nigerian immigrants who decided to pursue her dream of living an extraordinary life. 12 Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes in Croatia: Everything You Need To Know

12 Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes in Croatia: Everything You Need To Know

Last Updated on January 17, 2024 by Michela

Croatia is abundant with hidden gems and majestical places – Plitvice Lakes is one of them. Plitvice Lakes is a canyon of green forest hugging the brightest blue lagoons you’ve ever seen. It feels like you’re walking through Jurassic Park! Even if you didn’t know Plitvice Lakes existed, you’ll be wanting to add it to your bucket list. And when you plan your trip, you’ll want to use essential tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park .

Oh, and did I mention it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Yep, Plitvice Lakes is a big deal!

Even from the Plitvice Lakes entrance, you’re hooked on the beauty of this place with the insane view of Veliki Slap waterfalls.

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, I encourage you to check out my other helpful posts like things to do in Zagreb or the best day trips from Split . Plitvice Lakes makes a perfect day trip from both Zagreb and Split!

Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes

These are the ultimate tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes that will have you prepared and worry-free on the day of your visit!

Travel in Low Season

tour croazia plitvice

There are many advantages to visiting Plitvice Lakes in the months other than July and August. One obvious reason is fewer people! The park is really big, so there’s actually a lot of room for visitors to spread out.

But there are areas where tourists get clogged up and it’s not the nicest experience. Plus the parking situation gets a bit crazy.

The other plus in visiting in the low season is the cost! Prices go down by over 50 percent!

Adults will pay 200 Croatian Kuna (31 USD) in the high season and 80 Kuna (12 USD) in the low season!

You can see the full price guide at Plitvice National Park’s website . (They’re sorted by date for the high and low season – remember in Europe dates are MM/DD/Year!)

Arrive Early

tour croazia plitvice

One of the best tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes is to visit early. This, like for the travel season, is for multiple reasons.

Firstly, I kind of already mentioned that parking can get a bit crazy. It’s true! There are multiple parking lots very near to the entrance of the national park, however, they are not the most organized.

Picking a spot is already difficult since it’s a gravel lot and certain areas are uneven surfaces. Add that after morning has arrived, it’s full of people and their vehicles!

The earlier you can arrive to park calmly and find a spot easily, the better.

Keep in mind you also have to pay for parking! It’s 5 to 10 Kuna per hour depending on the season (only about 1 USD.)

Secondly, the hikes at Plitvice Lakes can be full day affairs. There are paths that can take up to 8 hours to complete!

Arriving early means you have all the time in the world in your one day visit to explore the park!

Information to know: Park open is at 7 am.

Extra Tip: Take your time at the Plitvice Lakes entrance at the Veliki Slap viewpoint. You won’t see the Veliki Slap waterfalls again after you make it through the first part of the park – so soak it up and take tons of photos!

Choose a Hiking Path

tour croazia plitvice

As I mentioned, the national park has trails mapped out for visitors. Following these trails keeps you safe and also allows you to customize how long you want to stay at the park.

I hiked trail C, the 4-6 hour walking trail! It’s a great medium hike that allows you to see almost all of the park. There are signs along the main walking paths that direct you to the path you should be following.

My advice is to stop at the wooden sign at the front entrance of the park, which has a big map and all the trails marked out. You’ll get a visual representation of the park (since it’s too big to see in one gaze).

Choose one path and stick to it so you don’t become confused, miss something, or end up hiking more than you expected!

Pack Snacks or a Picnic

There are quite a few restaurants in the vicinity and within the national park. Check out the full list here if you prefer to eat at a restaurant!

I personally can’t pass up the opportunity for a picturesque picnic! I suggest shopping at the grocery store and picking up small bites and snacks to eat along your hike.

In the middle of the park (2-3 hours into hiking) is a relaxation area with pavilions, bathrooms, and picnic benches. You could set up for lunch there or pick a spot along the hike to eat and enjoy the view.

Make the Most of Your Ticket

tour croazia plitvice

Your entrance ticket includes a boat ride across the lake as well as a seat on the panoramic bus (that also helps take you back to the front entrance!) Trust me, your legs will thank you for the panoramic bus ride!

A visit to Plitvice Lakes is most likely going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity, so this is why I’m suggesting to choose one of the longer trail paths that allows you to use these features included in your ticket.

You can explore both the upper lakes and lower lakes with the boat ride.

Choose the Right Photography Equipment – (Psst! Neutral Density Filters)

tour croazia plitvice

While it’s nice to simply get outdoors at Plitvice Lakes, it’s one of those places you’re going to want to photograph – trust me! This is not the day to leave your camera at home.

I absolutely suggest bringing your camera and a regular zoom lens (skip your prime or telephoto.) This will be a great opportunity to shoot waterfalls, so here are the two main things you will need for that: a neutral density filter and a tripod.

You can capture these waterfalls with a beautiful long exposure and really catch the water moving by keeping your camera still on a tripod. My favorite is the MeFoto Globetrotter S Carbon Fiber , which will be lightweight while you hike and provide amazing stability.

tour croazia plitvice

Neutral density filters will aid in blocking light and allow you to use longer shutter speed to capture the blur of the waterfall.

You can access my free photographer’s packing guide for an in-depth look at what you should be taking on your trips for the best photos!

Rent a Rowboat

If I could take on of my own tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes, it would be to rent a rowboat! I missed the chance because we decided to skip it in order to keep following our trail path.

But if I could go back, this is what I’d do! For 50 kuna or 8 USD (per half hour), you can rent one of these rustic wooden rowboats to explore the largest of all the lakes.

Wear Appropriate Shoes

I wore my usual Adidas trainers and even my fairly high quality athletic shoes almost didn’t weather a hike at Plitvices Lakes. This national park is no joke. The beginning of the trails has wooden sidewalks, but it transitions into Earth’s terrain and stays that way for the majority of the paths.

Not to mention there are also rocky and uneven caves to explore! Proper hiking shoes are definitely the move if you have them and they fit in your suitcase!

Dress Comfortably

tour croazia plitvice

Besides just the shoes, make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothing – whatever that means for you.

For me, I wore a fitted tank top and a skirt with shorts built in (okay fine, a skort – although that sounds way less fashionable!)

It was a compromise for the heat, the physical activity, and still wanting to look cute for pictures!

Just make sure you wear clothes that are lightweight and you’re able to move in. Bring an extra layer depending on the weather. I always use the app PackPoint to plan what I’m packing for a certain destination – it takes into account the weather forecast!

Stay Hydrated

tour croazia plitvice

There’s not much in between in this massive national park. There are pavilions at the front, middle, and end, meaning the ability to refill or buy water is limited.

Hikes are long and especially during the summer, the heat can really impact your physical movement. Keep recharged using a reusable water bottle!

My travel-friendly favorite is a collapsible water bottle to keep packing light, which is perfect for a hike.

Otherwise, I love Brita water bottles for traveling if I have more space to carry since they have a built-in water filtration system!

Bring Rain Gear

tour croazia plitvice

Pack a light rain jacket to be prepared for what could happen. I went to Plitvice Lakes at the end of July and there was a downpour in the afternoon!

Rain jackets will be easier to hike in rather than carrying an umbrella because of the brush and potentially tight walking areas of the trail.

Enjoy Moments Along the Hike

tour croazia plitvice

One thing that I really loved about visiting Plitvice Lakes is because it was so big, you were able to spread out from people in most areas and simply take a moment to enjoy.

Take advantage of the numerous benches placed throughout the park or find your own little corner to sit and take in the magical views.

Resources for Planning Your Visit to Plitvice Lakes

tour croazia plitvice

Along with all these tips to visit Plitvice Lakes, plan your trip by utilizing the Plitvice National Park website! It has tons of information about activities and in-depth knowledge of the park.

Remember that Croatia uses Kuna as currency and to either have cash converted into Kuna or add a travel notification to your credit card.

If you’d rather book an excursion to Plitvice Lakes (which can be helpful if you’re making it a day trip from further spots like Split,) there are lots of options so that your transportation and entrance is taken care of. Or you could opt for a guided Plitvice Lakes tour if you didn’t want to DIY your visit.

I personally loved exploring Plitvice Lakes without a guide, but I want to make sure you know all your options! If you want to learn about the history and special notes about Plitvice Lakes, then a tour is a must. If you just want to explore and take in the beautiful scenery, then skip a guided tour!

The slow and steady shifting and dissolving of rock over thousands of years created these pools, and the soft limestone helped to create the chain-like barriers. Pair that with the cascades that trickle into them, the stalactites, channels, and moss, and you have an almost unreal prehistoric paradise.

One of the highlights of this magical tour is the panoramic boat ride, where you’ll be able to see hidden gems up close and personal. The attention to detail and organization from the staff only makes it an even better time.

Welcome to the official website of Plitvice Lakes National Park!

With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of the lakes, is the outstanding universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised on 26 October 1979 with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. Exploring the Jewel of Croatia: Ultimate Guide to Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

The democratisation of travel and the trend of ticking off bucket lists have made all of us  Ibn Battuta . Looking to visit the most exotic, most Instagramable places on Earth, we religiously collect immigration stamps on our passports. Expectedly, most of us never want to revisit the same destination simply because there is so much to see in the world, and we have little money and time in hand, so why would we want to revisit the same place we’ve already seen?

I used to think this way, too, until circumstances required me to return to destinations I’d already visited — and these trips turned out to be some of the best trips of my life. I met locals who became BFFs. And one such friend is  Boris Luca,  who works with the Tourism Board of Plitvice Lakes National Park. Boris is so good that adjectives fall short of describing him. He is one of the most  selfless, hardworking, caring  and   OG when it comes to being cool. And, on top of that, he has a killer sense of humour. Because of my excellent experience with Boris in 2018, I couldn’t help but plan a second trip again to Plitvice Lakes in 2023. You can read all about my 2018 trip here. And, for Boris, I must dedicate an entire blog or book. Even then, I might not be able to do justice to his goodness.

Why is Plitvice Lakes famous?

Returning to Plitvice, you must live under the rock if you have yet to hear about this place. Plitvice Lakes National Park is like a Hypermarket of waterfalls and lakes in Croatia –  16 cascading lakes and more than 90 waterfalls  – making it one of Croatia’s most popular tourist destinations. Every year the Park (which has a mere population of 4000) attracts approximately  2 million visitors . As per the official records, the  Plitvice National Park received 1.9 million tourists in 2022 , which is way higher when you compare it with places like Zagreb and Dubrovnik, where  One million visitors come every year . The Plitvice Park is known for its stunning natural beauty, cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and lush green forests.

What is there to see in the Plitvice Lakes National Park?

The Park is home to 16 interconnected lakes that cascade into one another through a series of waterfalls and cascades. The Park is divided into two main sections:  Upper  and  Lower Lakes . The 12 Upper Lakes are known for their clear blue-green waters, and the 4 Lower Lakes for their dramatic waterfalls. The upper Lakes comprise 12 lakes separated by tufa barriers created 6000-7000 years ago. The wooden walkways that connect the lakes offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Besides hiking the lakes, I took a boat ride to enjoy the Park’s flora and fauna from  Kozjak Lake , the largest and deepest lake in the Plitvice Lakes system.

While the Park is undoubtedly a must-visit during the summer, it’s worth noting that each season brings its unique charm to the area.

Seasonal Splendour: Experiencing the Changing Faces of Plitvice Lakes National Park

With its ever-changing scenery and unique attractions, the Park offers a different experience each season, from the stunning fall foliage to the serene winter landscape, the vibrant spring colours, and the bustling summer beauty. In this blog post, I will take you on a surreal journey through the changing faces of Plitvice Lakes National Park, exploring the Park’s diverse and captivating landscapes during each season.

Blooming Springtime: Nature’s Rebirth

As Spring arrives, Plitvice Lakes National Park bursts into life with blooming flowers and rejuvenated foliage. The lakes and waterfalls are replenished with the melting snow, creating a symphony of flowing water and vibrant colours. The Park comes alive with birds chirping and the air filled with the fragrance of fresh blooms. The trails are lined with carpets of wildflowers, and the trees are adorned with fresh green leaves, creating a refreshing and invigorating ambience. Spring is a time of renewal in Plitvice Lakes National Park, where nature’s beauty unfolds in all its glory, making it a perfect season for nature enthusiasts and photographers to capture the Park’s exquisite charm. Spring had just knocked on the door at Plitvice Lake when I arrived to say hello for the second time. Unfortunately, the snow was still present in March when I visited, so Upper Lakes were closed until 31st March.

Vibrant Summer Colours: Bustling Beauty and Crowded Trails

Plitvice Lakes National Park is at its busiest as summer arrives, and it’s easy to see why. With the sun shining brightly, the lush vegetation is in full bloom, and the Park’s lakes and waterfalls flow at their peak. The Park’s vibrant colours are on full display, with shades of green, blue, and turquoise blending in perfect harmony. The trails are abuzz with visitors, and the Park’s natural wonders are a sight to behold. Summer offers excellent outdoor activities, such as hiking and boating, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the Park’s beauty. Despite the increased footfall, Plitvice Lakes National Park retains its allure, with its pristine nature and awe-inspiring landscapes continuing to captivate visitors during the vibrant summer season. My  first trip to Plitvice National Park was in the Summer of 2018 . I spent three days in the Park, where not only did I spend ample time in the Park, but I also got a chance to try out many offbeat adventures outside the Park that are otherwise unavailable in the lean season, such as white water rafting, kayaking, ziplining, horse riding among a score of other activities.

Fall Foliage: Nature’s Canvas of Colours

As autumn arrives, Plitvice Lakes National Park transforms into a painter’s palette, with the foliage of deciduous trees adorning the landscape with a riot of colours. The Park’s lush greenery turns into a mesmerising symphony of red, orange, and golden hues, creating a stunning contrast against the emerald lakes and cascading waterfalls. The trails meander through the Park, surrounded by a canopy of trees draped in a medley of fall colours, providing a picture-perfect backdrop for leisurely strolls and scenic hikes. The sound of leaves rustling underfoot and the crispness in the air add to the magical ambience of this season, making it a favourite time for photographers and nature lovers alike. Autumn is a great time to visit if you crave peaceful escapes as the crowds thin out. This season is perfect for hiking and exploring the area’s hidden gems.

Winter Wonderland: Frozen Beauty

Plitvice Lakes National Park transforms into a snowglobe-like winter wonderland as winter arrives. The Park’s lakes, waterfalls, and streams freeze over, creating a captivating landscape of icy formations. The trees and vegetation are dusted with snow, creating a postcard-perfect winter scene. The frozen lakes and waterfalls glisten in the sunlight, and the quietness of the Park adds to the tranquillity of the surroundings. Winter also offers unique activities, such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing or simply walking on snow-covered paths. Thus allowing visitors to experience the Park in a whole new light. The most striking feature is when the Park’s waterfalls freeze over, creating a magical winter wonderland perfect for photography. The winter wonderland of Plitvice Lakes National Park is a sight to behold, offering a serene and peaceful ambience for those seeking a tranquil escape from their busy everyday life.

Whether you choose to visit during the fall, winter, Spring, or summer, Plitvice Lakes National Park is sure to leave you awe-inspired with its breathtaking scenery and unique attractions in every season.

Where to stay in Plitvice Lakes National Park?

While most visitors make a day trip to Plitvice from Zagreb, I highly recommend you spend at least two nights in the Park to experience the various offbeat adventures the Park has to offer. There are several accommodation options in and around Plitvice Lakes National Park. The Park has two hotels,  Hotel Jezero  and  Hotel Plitvice , and several campsites. I’ve stayed at Hotel Jazero twice. The biggest plus of this four-star property in Plitvice Lake National Park is its biggest plus. With 210 rooms and 19 apartments, the hotel provides good service in a peaceful environment within an affordable budget. The hotel includes a 400-seat restaurant, lobby bar and cafe, and fitness hall, and the hotel complex consists of a range of sports and recreation activities. The rooms are spacious, and the staff is accommodating. However, the food could be better.  Hotel Plitvice , too, is located in the heart of the Park and has 51 rooms constructed in the mid-1950s by renowned Croatian architect  Marijan Haberle . At that time, it was the  first A-category  hotel in Croatia, and even today, it is considered one of the best architectural designs among public buildings in Croatian architecture.

Another hotel you can try is the newly built  Lyra Hotel Plitvice , 15 min (15.4 km) from the National Park. Besides these hotels, several private apartments and guesthouses are there in nearby villages, such as  Mukinje, Seliste Dreznicko, and Rakovica . If you prefer a more luxurious experience, several high-end villas and resorts are also in the area.

What to eat in Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Several restaurants and cafes in Plitvice Lakes National Park offer a range of food options, from traditional Croatian dishes to international cuisine. I recommend trying out  Bistro Vila Bita at Korenica ,  a local farm-to-the-table restaurant serving local and international cuisine. We had  cevapcici with kajmak  and vegetarian Hunters Pizza. The food was so delicious and full of flavours that my mouth still waters when I think about it. And the desserts were outstanding. We tried their famous  baklava  and  palatine with basa cheese . Our server Richard was a superb host who ensured we ate the best food in the town.

While we couldn’t sample all the local foods, some of the most popular dishes to try in Croatia, include cevapi (grilled meat), pesticide (beef stew), and sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls). Additionally, several snack bars and ice cream shops throughout the Park are perfect for a quick refreshment during your visit. And, if you get a chance, try out the feather-light soft mouth-melting Višnja, and Breskva – sir – višnja among other cakes from  Plitvicka Strudla.

And don’t forget to try Rakija (local homemade brandy).

With its cascading waterfalls, crystal clear lakes, and lush green forests, it’s easy to see why it’s one of Croatia’s most popular tourist destinations. Whether you’re interested in hiking, wildlife watching, or simply taking in the views, there’s something for everyone at the Park. So why not plan your visit today and experience the beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park for yourself?

Practical Tips for Plitvice Lakes

  • Do not swim in Plitvice Lakes National Park. It’s prohibited.
  • Visit Early morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
  • Littering of any kind is forbidden in the Park.
  • Do not rush your trip. At least spend two days in the Park, experiencing its various corners and route.

Things to do around Plitvice Lakes National Park:

Apart from visiting the Park, there are several other activities and places to explore around Plitvice Lakes National Park.

The Željava Airbase

This abandoned airbase is located about 30 kilometres (15 minutes) from the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park, tucked under Plješevica Mountain on the border of Croatia and Bosnia. Said to be Europe’s largest abandoned military airbase, it is a perfect place for history buffs and those interested in exploring abandoned buildings. It was a top-secret underground complex located near. Built at a whopping cost of 6 billion USD, it was the most expensive airbase in Europe. Only to be destroyed deliberately during the Yugoslav War to prevent the enemies from using it.

The #ŽeljavaAirbase was an engineering and technology marvel having five runways, 4 Entrances, 3.5 km Tunnels, and parking space for 60 MiG-21 that could take off in 2 mins from the airbase. Most importantly, it was nuclear explosion-proof. In case of a nuclear attack, the base had sufficient means to operate autonomously for 30 days with 1,000 people.

At the entrance of this jaw-dropping site lies an old Douglas C-47 “Dakota” aircraft, frozen in time since May 1992 when it made its last landing.

It was my second time in a Lego-sized town called Gospic, about 60 kilometres from Plitvice Lakes National Park. It’s home to several museums, including the Nikola Tesla Museum at Samjlan, which showcases the life and work of the most talented inventor of history. The museum is the birthplace of the greatest inventor of the 20th century – Nikola Tesla. Divided into three sections, it has a barn, house, and laboratory displaying the Tesla Coil.

Una National Park:

A hidden gem in the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Una National Park is home to stunning waterfalls and cascading rivers. Despite visiting twice, I always need more of this waterfall. It looks magnificent in all weathers, be it Spring or summer, Autumn or Winter. Una National Park is just a short drive from Plitvice Lakes National Park and takes 52 mins (42 km). The best way to get to Una National Park is by car, allowing you to stop at breathtaking viewpoints and enjoy the scenic drive. Along the way, I recommend you stop at the city centre in Bihac to indulge in traditional Bosnian food. Don’t forget to sample rakija (a traditional Balkan fruit brandy) at Hamza’s place in Celije village! But the excitement doesn’t stop there! Once inside the Park, for a nominal entrance fee of just 10 BAM (approx. 5 USD), you’ll be greeted by stunning waterfalls, pristine forests, thrilling adventure activities, white-water rafting, kayaking, fishing or simply hiking in the verdant trails. The best time to visit the Una National Park is between Spring and summer for lush greenery and vibrant colours. Whether hiking, rafting, or simply soaking in the stunning scenery, Una National Park is a must-visit destination.

Where to go next – from Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Most tourists coming from Zagreb visit the Plitvice Lakes before heading towards the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia to spend some time in Pag Islands, Split, Zadar, Trogir and Dubrovnik. You can either do this route or a more offbeat way heading towards Bosnia and Herzegovina, exploring towns such as Bihac, Jajce and Sarajevo along with additional stopovers at ski towns Montenegro – Zabljak and Kolasin – before ending your Balkan road trip in Dubrovnik.

And, if you want to go somewhere other than South East, you can visit the neighbouring countries of Slovenia and Austria.
