Boat tour in Santorini.

A Private Catamaran Cruise to the hot springs and around the Santorini caldera is one of my favorite things to do in Greece.

Boat Tours of the Caldera – My Advice A boat tour of the caldera is among my very favorite things to do in Santorini . Unforgettable and a must-do! Don’t worry too much about which tour you book – they’re all good. Emphasis should be on getting something booked in advance before they sell out for your dates. Day tour or sunset tour? There is not a huge difference between the two types of tours beyond the time of day. A day tour/cruise usually runs from 9 or 10 am to 3 pm, serves lunch, and has lots of swimming. A sunset tour/cruise runs from about 3 pm to 8 or 9 pm, serves dinner, has a little less swimming than the day tour, and typically finishes by sailing beneath the Oia cliffs to watch the sunset. Private boat tour or small group tour? I’ll be honest, I definitely prefer the private boat tours . You get more input on where to go, how long to spend at different spots, what music to listen to, and (sometimes) where you get dropped off at the end. Yes, private tours are more expensive but I’d be shocked if anyone regretted the money they spent once they’re on the boat. The description says, “all you can eat and drink”, is that really true? Yes, but with some differences between tours. The private tours bring the drinks out before you’ve left the harbor. The less-expensive tours hold-off for a bit until the boat gets to the first destination and you’ve had a swim, which might be an hour to two, but after that, it’s an open bar. There are no ferries to the volcano. The only way to do a volcano tour is to do a boat tour. You can not access the volcano unless you’re part of an organized (private or group) tour. All boat tours have great views of the caldera cliffs. Cruise options include: hike the volcano; swim in the hot springs (you can always stay on the boat if you wish); visit Thirassia and explore its villages; stop at Red Beach and White Beach to swim and snorkel; eat lunch or dinner on board, and watch the sunset below Oia. GetYourGuide.com is the best way to book tours in Santorini. If you ever need to cancel it’s usually much easier if you’ve booked through Get Your Guide.

The 8 Best Boat Tours in Santorini

All boat tours below provide meals onboard and have hotel pick-up and drop-off (which doesn’t sound like a big deal when you’re booking but makes the day so much easier and hassle-free when the time arrives). Also, all tours enter the caldera, sail to or near the volcano, and have plenty of swimming and snorkeling . Food on the tours ranges from surprisingly good to great. And the boats are very generous with their alcohol – after every tour, I ask myself how they make money when they’re so lavish with the food and drink. 1. Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Cruise (2:45pm departure) or Day Cruise (9:45am departure). Awesome cruise around the volcano, staring up at the cliffs of the caldera. You stop at a few beaches for swimming and snorkeling, then swim in the hot springs near the volcano, eat a huge lunch or dinner, and finally see the sunset from the cliffs below Oia (for the sunset cruise). Lots of fun! If this tour is fully booked then try the Caldera Cruise or Santorini Sunset Cruise . 2. Private Catamaran Cruise

Wonderful private cruise of the caldera. Great food and plenty of flexibility on what to see and where to sail. Ideal for a luxury honeymoon cruise, small group, or family. The day tour departs at 10:30am, the sunset-tour departs at 3:30pm. Both tours last 5 hours. Be prepared to be insanely pampered. If the above tour is fully booked – which is common from June to September – then try the Private Sunset Cruise . 3. Santorini Day Cruise Wonderful day tour with great food and friendly staff (10:00am departure). You can’t go more than 5 minutes without someone asking if you want another beer or glass of wine. But it’s far from a drinking cruise – the emphasis is on swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the top of the catamaran. You’ll visit a few beaches and the hot springs and have plenty of time to explore the sights of the caldera. (I did this boat tour last summer and it was awesome.) 4. Private Cruise on a Motor Yacht This is an incredible way to see the Santorini cliffs and stare up at the villages perched on the caldera’s edge. The motor yachts allow for much more freedom in getting around the volcanic islands and seeing the caldera from every different angle. On a catamaran, you feel like you’re on vacation. On the motor yachts it feels a little more like you’re on an adventure (though there’s still plenty of swimming, snorkeling, eating, and drinking). 5. Volcano Boat Tour Much less expensive and with a larger boat and group of people but still very fun. This tour is almost the opposite of the Sunset Catamaran Cruise. You get the volcano, hot springs (with swimming), and a visit to Thirassia island – but no beaches or going outside the caldera, and no sunset. This is the cheapest boat tour of the caldera. 6. Santorini Fishing Tour This tour is very well done and lots of fun. Boat around the Santorini waters on a local fishing boat. Fresh seafood lunch or dinner served on board (eat what you catch and empty from the nets). The daytime tour is best for families and serious fishermen. The sunset tour is best for couples. 7. Santorini Jet Ski Tour Not a boat tour, obviously, but super fun. We’ve done a couple of these tours (it’s always a small group of 2 to 4) to the volcano and they rank as some of the most exhilarating activities we’ve ever done. (That’s my son in the photo, 14 years old at the time.) The perspective you get as you ride through the caldera is awe-inspiring. A boat travels with the tour and is there for any emergencies or if the water gets too rough for beginner riders. The South Coast Tour is fun, but to see the volcano and caldera (which I recommend) you need to do the Volcano Tour or Extreme Volcano Tour. I would be shocked if anyone did this tour and at its conclusion didn’t yell, that was awesome!!! 8. Sea Kayaking Excursion A fun and easy-going way to explore the Santorini coastline. The Morning Tour and Evening Tour stick to the south coast of the island. The Round The Lighthouse Tour goes into the caldera and offers incredible views of the caldera cliffs.

Food on the boat tours is surprisingly good – sometimes great. All tours listed here have a sitdown lunch or dinner. So much to see. Awesome! About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave

Hi Dave – great site with so much information!

My partner and I can’t decide which tour to go on in July – we want to do the volcano excursion, see the sunset at Oia onboard but also see the south coastline (mainly the red beach).

Is it best to do a cheaper volcano boat tour on one day and then a catamaran sunset cruise on another (we are visiting for 6 days). Or I saw you’ve posted about water taxis to see the different beaches, so I guess we can do the volcano boat tour and then take the bus (or drive) to Akrotiri and make our way to the beach?

We haven’t decided on whether to rent a car or use the buses. I’ve seen you posted about pros/cons of both types of transport. I think our main consideration is the wait for buses due to peak season vs the cost of renting a car. Or maybe we rent a car for part of our trip.

Thank you so much!

' src=

As much as I love and recommend boat tours, I generally would not recommend doing two different boat trips. I think that time is better spent exploring the island, and yes, taking the water taxi between southern beaches is a good option. I would rent a car for two or three days and use the bus the other days. The boat tours will have hotel pick up, so you need not worry about transportation that day.

' src=

Dave: When you go swimming on these boat trips (especially one going to hot springs), where can you keep your valuables, e.g. your camera? It would be terrible to lose your photos. I am a trustworthy person, but wonder what other people do to avoid any problems. You can’t swim with a camera.

Honestly, it’s never been anything I’ve considered. It’s usually a small group of people and there’s never an issue with leaving your stuff. I suppose you could leave it with one of the staff, but I expect they’d just laugh and say, this is Greece, your stuff is fine, go swim.

' src=

Hi Dave, thanks so much for all your recommendations. How choppy are these boat rides? I am concerned about sea sickness if you have any specific recommendations? Thanks so much!

The boat tours are typically pretty calm. Most time is in the protected caldera waters and if the sea is really rough the tour will be cancelled, in any case. The boat tours are definitely less rough than the worst ferry rides, so if you’re ok on the ferry you’ll be fine on a boat tour.

' src=

Just found this fantastic website – thanks Santorini Dave, have been finding it really useful! One question about the boat tours please, we’d like to do one, will they take 5 year olds? Thank you

Unless otherwise stated, boat tours allow all ages.

' src=

Hi, Dave My friend and I are considering to book the Private Catamaran Cruise. Could you please give us some ideas about the range of the gratuities we should provide? Thanks!

Tipping in the 10% to 20% is appreciated. But the more the better – holiday workers really rely on tips to make a living wage.

' src=

Hi Dave – are there any boat trips available from Santorini that are maybe just 2-3 hours instead of a half or full day? Would like to be able to swim and just see some beautiful scenery, but will have a 4-year-old and husband that might be debatable if he would get sea-sickness so 5 hours feels like a big commitment. We’re staying in Oia – what might you suggest? We’ll only be on Santorini for 2 nights/1.5 days before moving on to Naxos. Thanks for all of your excellent insights!

There are no shorter tours on Santorini. Though if you booked a private boat tour (expensive, obviously) they would return you to port whenever you wanted. I will say the 5 hours goes very quickly. The only other option (as far as getting on a boat) is the ferry to Thirassia or the water taxis along the south coast beaches.

' src=

We are visiting Santorini the first week of November, will the water be too cold for these awesome excursions with swimming in hot springs and volcanoes? And if it is, is it still worth doing?

Yes, it likely will be too cold to swim for most (though not impossible for the bold). And also yes, it’s definitely still worth doing a boat tour even if you don’t swim. Views and perspective from the water are incredible any time of year.

' src=

Hi Santorini Dave

I’m looking to travel next year by myself possibly in May/September, which area of Santorini would you recommend I stay? I’m debating the time I’ll be staying but it will be between 5 or 7 nights.

Also, would you recommend any day trips to another island?

Many thanks, Alison.

I have several posts on this site about where to stay on Santorini and best towns and beaches. Take a look. In general, I do not recommend day trips to other islands. With the ferry schedules, it’s difficult to get more than a few hours on neighboring islands when you do a day trip. It’s much better to pack your bags and move to whatever island you want to see.

' src=

I’m going to Santorini and Mykonos for 8 days. Do you think it’s worth doing a boat tour on each island? I’ll only have 3 days in Mykonos.

Definitely do a boat tour in Santorini. For Mykonos it’s more of a toss-up. (If greek cooking sounds interesting to you, I’d probably do the cooking course instead of a boat tour.)

' src=

Hi Dave, Thanks for all the information on this site. Is there a sailing trip that just goes for a trip around the caldera, with no swimming or snorkeling? Maybe with the option of seeing the volcano close up and also the sunset? Thanks, Tansen.

Pretty much all tours have swimming but you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. And while others are swimming you can just relax on deck and gaze at the views. The tour carries on even when some are swimming so it’s not as if you just sit there on your own, bored – there’s still plenty of fun on board the boat.

' src=

Do you think boat tours are fine during winter season? Otherwise, do you have any recommendations for winter excursions?

Many thanks in advance.

If by winter, you mean December, January, and February then there will be few (if any) boat tours running and I don’t think I’d recommend them. If, instead, you might be visiting in March and get some good weather then they’ll be fine (though still not many running). A wine tour is a great year-round thing to do in Santorini. And walking the Fira-Oia path.

' src=

For the boat tours, do you need to swim to the beach or is walkable to the shore once they dock as close as they can? We’re not great swimmers and if that’s requirement we’ll have to book another boat tour.

For tours that visit the volcano, the boat will dock and you’ll be able to walk off without getting wet. For tours that visit the hot springs, the boat will anchor about 30 to 50 meters from the hot spring area and you’ll need to swim to the warm water. Otherwise, most tours stop near a beach for swimming and snorkeling but don’t really directly visit the beach. You’re fine staying on the boat and viewing the scenery (which is great) while others swim. On most tours about half the people swim and half remain on the boat, so it’s unlikely you’re the only one left on the boat while everyone else is off playing.

' src=

Will the boat tour to the volcano and hot spring be suitable for those who get sea sick?

Generally, it’s usually pretty calm. Depending on where you depart from most of the tour will be inside the protected caldera. Catamarans are more stable than single-hull boats.

' src=

We are taking our kids to Santorini the last week of March. What private boat tour would you recommend to take for the volcano tour?

It’s not so much what is the best tour but more what is available. As the time grows closer (February or early March) search Getyourguide for Santorini Boat Tours and choose the most appropriate.

' src=

I tried to book the private boat tour and the sunset tour above but both were fully booked for our dates. Do you have another good boat tour that you could recommend? Preferably a private one. Thanks!

There’s another Spiridakos boat tour that is excellent and very similar to the private tour I’ve listed above. It has departures of 10:30 (day tour) and 3:30 (sunset tour).

' src=

Dave, your advice on this site is awesome and very detailed. My fiancee and I are going to be in Santorini in August for our honeymoon and are definitely booking one of the boat tours, but we just can’t decide on whether to do a day or sunset voyage. Anything you can tell us that would help make our decision easier? Not sure if this has an effect on the analysis, but we are staying in Imerovigli which I understand has nice views of the sunset. Thanks!!

There’s not a huge difference: the day tour has more swimming time, the sunset tour has more evening hours. Be sure to take a change of clothes for the sunset tour (it can get chilly at night). The sunset tour has a later starting date which allows you to do something in the morning.

' src=

Hello Dave.

I’ll be staying in santoniri for a day this November. Arrive Friday morning to either Katikies or Kirini hotel, and then leave late Saturday afternoon to Athens. (Though I have to check out from my hotel by 12pm). Would you recommend a boat tour? If yes, which would it be. My issue mainly time and not price.

Both the 5-Hour Caldera Cruise at Sunset (3pm departure) and the 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise (9:30am and 2:30pm departure) run into late November. Both are great tours.

' src=

I am about to book the semi-private boat tour and we are going the last week of June into July (which, from what I understand, is a very crowded time of year). Do you think that the day of the week that we book the day tour matters much (Friday vs. Saturday vs. Monday)? I assume everyone on board is likely vacationing so I’m not sure if this would be significant, but if it may make a different in terms of the number of people on board, I’d love to know. Thanks!

There’s no difference between days of the week and busyness. Do whatever works best.

' src=

I have 3 full days in Santorini in the beginning of July. I’m looking into a boat tour or sea kayaking. Is it worth it to do both? What would you suggest? Thanks for your amazing resources!!

If you can only do one do the boat tour but if time allows do both, as they each have a very different feel. It’s a more surreal feeling being in a kayak at water-level looking up at the huge cliffs (depending where your tour goes). But you do get to do more when on the boat tour – it’s a more complete introduction to the caldera.

' src=

I am looking to book the sunset catamaran trip this summer. In the check out it asks for passport information. I just wanted to check this was a normal request/it’s safe to provide my information to this company?

Yes, it’s safe and secure. The information is requested by the port authority but it’s never used. You could put in your correct name and then just make up a letter/number combination for the passport number. They’ll never know and never look at it.

' src=

We are going to Santorini for one day in July via fast ferry from Crete. Are there any shorter cruises around Santorini that we can do in that window of time that we will be there?

No, sorry. There’s no boat tour (that I know of) that would get you back in time to get your return ferry to Crete.

' src=

We will be in Santorini for 3 days after ferries from Athens-Mykonos then Mykonos-Santorini. We were thinking of taking the ferry to Milos for a day trip. Is it reasonable to do in a day or will we be ferried out? Thanks for your insight, love reading all of your suggestions.

Not worth it. If you want to visit Milos stay at least 2 nights and 1 full day.

' src=

Hi Dave, I’m planning a honeymoon in Greece this upcoming May and your site has been an amazing resource – thanks! Quick question: Is May too early for the boat tours that have swimming? Thanks.

Yes, they’ll be running in May (usually start in April) and you’ll be able to swim. But water can still be a bit chilly. And note, hot springs are not “hot” just warm.

' src=

Hi there, I love to read and follow all of your posts so thank you for always having the most up to date information! We will be in Santorini in July and I would like to do a catamaran tour of the island and go into caves and see some of the hidden gems of Santorini. Is there a tour or boat that would do that? Also, is there a boat that will take you to Mykonos for a day and back to Santorini? Thank you, Alissa

I don’t know of any boat tours that take in caves. And don’t know of any Santorini to Mykonos tours either. There are much better islands to visit on a day tour from Santorini. Ios for beaches, Naxos for inland sightseeing. (That said, I typically don’t recommend doing a day trip from Santorini as time is much better spent on Santorini than on a boat. If you do want to see another island then stay a night or two to see it best.)

' src=

I am looking for a beach hopping trip in Santorini to visit the Black Beach, Red Beach, White beach etc. tour starts at 4PM or 5PM. How much for 2 people?

For these beaches best to do it yourself with this boat from Akrotiri . It will be 10€ per person round trip. Can also take a different boat back to Kamari (if you were taking the bus, if you’ve got your own car then you’ll need to return to Akrotiri). Last boat is about 6:30pm (but double check) so you won’t have a lot of time.

' src=

Hi Dave – Awesome site. Just became a patron!

Trying to select the right boat tour for my husband and I (going in a few weeks!). They all seem great so it’s hard to select. What are the key differences between these three tours:

Semi-Private Luxury Catamaran Day Cruise 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Catamaran Sailing Cruise in Caldera

In particular, trying to understand if it’s worth paying the premium for the semi-private luxury catamaran day cruise.

Many thanks! Lily

The single biggest difference is whether the tour goes through the day or in the late afternoon (and gets the sunset). The 5-hour small group tour is cheaper than the other two but will have a few more people on the boat and the food served is not quite as robust as for the semi-private and sunset catamaran cruises. More appetizers than the full meal you get on the other two. Fewer drinks are served as well. All 3 are great and you’ll love whatever you choose. My advice is to first decide whether you want the sunset or more sun/swimming.

Would like to do a private boat tour of caldera. It’s our honeymoon and want a super special day out on the water with food, wine, swimming, snorkeling, and the hot springs. Maybe take in the sunset too, but as you say, it’s a choice between more swimming/sunshine and sunset/evening so not sure what we’ll decide. What’s the best tour to book for our needs?

Thanks, Colin

The Private Half-Day Catamaran Cruise of Santorini is simply awesome. It is expensive but I’m sure you’re expecting that already. There’s a morning departure (for lots of swimming and sunshine) and an afternoon departure (for the sunset – but still plenty of time to swim too). Food is top notch. If it’s within your budget this is the one you want. (If you do the sunset tour bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimming stuff and enjoy the sunset without a chill.)

' src=

We are visiting Santorini in the next few weeks. Is there a ferry that 2 people can take on their own and explore the volcano/hot springs, or is it only by tour? Please let me know! Much appreciated. Gabriel M

There are no ferries to the volcano or hot springs. You have to do a tour or a chartered/private tour. There are small boats that do regular routes to the neighboring island of Thirassia (that forms the western side of the caldera) but this isn’t the volcano.

We are looking for the best sunset tour around Santorini. Our only concern is that we also want lots of swimming. If we do the sunset tour will we have enough time to swim?

Thanks Miller

Not sure what you mean by “enough” but you’ll certainly get a good stretch of time to swim. It won’t be 10 minutes and let’s go. More like 2 to 3 hours.

What our customers are saying about us

From the mini bus transfer with Bus Leader, picking us up at the local bus stop from our hotel, the scenic drive to the Port of Athinios, the gorgeous Aphrodite sailing ship, the crew and their diligence in looking after all the passengers, their knowledge and skills in giving you the information when participating in the walk to the volcano and the swim in the thermal waters, the Greek dinner on board, finishing up with the traditional Zorba dance and the stunning views of the sunset over Oia. Recommended this particular trip to other guests staying at our hotel, Olympia, in Perivolos. Cannot recommend this trip highly enough. Fantastic experience and the highlight of our trip for mum and I.

This entire experience was absolutely fabulous! The boat, Ulysses, our guide was funny, energetic and knowledgeable. The hot springs, volcano , dinner and sunset were great. Perfect way to see and experience the caldera!!

Spectacular scenery, from the volcano, to the crater, to the sheer cliffs and views from below. Guide was great! We especially enjoyed when the sails were unfurled for the sunset viewing at the end and of course a Greek dance for all at the end!

This was the BEST tour I have ever been on! The tour guide was amazing, knew so much about the history of the Island and surrounding areas and the whole thing was so much fun! The weather was unfortunate for us meaning we had to bring raincoats and jumpers, but when the sun set it was magical. The dinner was also plentiful and yummy! Worth every penny. Please do this!!

A boat tour in Santorini is the most delightful and efficient way of exploring the hidden treasures of the island while feeling the sense of freedom and serenity that the sea offers! There are different types of boat tours to choose from, depending on your preferences and your vacation style. Whether you prefer a Volcano Tour , a Catamaran Cruise , a Yacht Cruise , or a Sailing Cruise , there are many options to choose from.

-Volcano Tours: One of the most popular and affordable options is the Volcano tours, as they include a hike on the impressive Santorini Volcano , a swim at the Hot Springs near it, and some of them a visit to the neighboring island of Therasia . Some even offer the opportunity to watch the beautiful sunset on board!

-Catamaran Cruises: A Catamaran Cruise is also popular among travelers to Santorini, as apart from the chance to see the Volcano from a close distance and take a dive in the warm waters near it, it takes you to the most picture-perfect beaches on the island, offers meals such as a buffet meal , a full BBQ meal , or even vegetarian options, and provides unlimited local wine, beers, and soft drinks.

-Yacht Cruises: For those who wish to organize a special event on board, like a birthday party or a wedding proposal , a yacht cruise is the best choice. It is a private option for just you and your group or loved one, which ensures that you will have a comfortable and thrilling experience!

-Sunset Boat Tours: All the cruise types offer Day and Sunset tours to choose from. If you are looking for a romantic experience , a sunset tour is an ideal choice. You will sail in the most stunning location and be rewarded by the breathtaking view of the sun disappearing on the horizon!

If you wish to organize a Private customized cruise to explore other islands near Santorini, feel free to contact us for assistance.

All the Tours, Cruises and Activities you can do in Santorini

The Volcano Tours offer the opportunity to walk on the volcano and swim in its Hot Springs.

A Private Boat Tour is the perfect choice for your special occasion. Combine food, wine and the most spectacular sunset onboard and your proposal to your beloved person will be memorable.

Yes! Many people choose Private Catamaran Cruises (for large groups) or Private Motor Yacht Cruises to celebrate with their beloved companions. BBQ food, drinks, cocktails, friendly and discreet crew, music and lots of fun with a view of Santorini’s caldera or the famous sunset ꟷ what is better than this?

We recommend that you check the Romantic Honeymoon Experiences we have carefully chosen for you. Enjoy the enchanting sunset of Santorini while having dinner on board with local specialties, accompanied by the fine Santorinian wines or fancy cocktails.

Of course! If you are a big company, choose the Private Catamaran Cruises that offer spacious areas and therefore more comfort for your bachelor or wedding party. Ready for some fun on board?

Yes, the best tour operators of Santorini, with whom we collaborate, provide these options. Please leave a comment on the checkout page or contact us to let you know what options are available.

Yes! On the page Yacht Charter & Boat Rental , you can see all the boats with which you can visit the nearby islands of Santorini! Please contact us for any advice or tour/cruise alteration you are interested in.

It depends on the children’s age and preferences. If they are sporty and love exploration, you can choose one from the Volcano Tours . If they love swimming and diving, then they will be very pleased with a Catamaran Cruise . If you have very young children, perhaps a private tour , which will offer you more comfort and the ability to customize the itinerary, is ideal for you.

Of course, you are! The tours and cruises that offer free pickup/drop-off services will serve you wherever you stay. Please note your address on the checkout page to arrange your transfer. There are tours that set meeting points in central locations of most of Santorini’s villages.

During winter most companies remain closed. When the weather is fine (from spring to autumn) there are many options available! Due to the fact that boat tours and Catamaran Cruises are very popular, they rapidly become fully booked, especially from June to September. For this reason it is recommended that you make a reservation earlier, even one month in advance, to ensure availability! Enjoy your tour or cruise!

Yes , you can cancel your reservation and you are entitled to a refund of up to 100% of the initial amount, based on the cancellation policy of the tour/cruise that appears on the product page.

Please visit the page of the tour you are interested in so that you can find out its cancellation policy or contact us . Furthermore, once you have made your reservation, an email with a link from which you can manage/cancel your reservation will be sent to you.

If the tour or cruise is cancelled due to bad weather conditions, you will be refunded the entire amount you paid unless you wish to change the date of your booking with no extra cost.

Best Santorini Boat Tours

Updated On: March 26, 2023

Written By: Pavlos Inglesis

Santorini is an island, so getting the boat and “moving around” is one of the best things to do on the island. There are a lot of Santorini Boat Tours that are currently on offer, but they don’t all offer the same things, so here is what you need to know. ⛵

BEST SANTORINI BOAT TOUR: All-Inclusive Luxury Catamaran Small Group Cruise

santorini boat tours

I am pretty sure that a boat tour in Santorini will easily be the highlight of your trip , and it will be a shame if you don’t do one.

Get my secrets for Greece and Santorini in your email!

There are a ton of boat tours to choose from, but all of them usually follow the same route, taking you to the volcano inside the caldera (the volcanic sea lagoon), the volcano island, the volcanic hot springs, the island of Thirassia, the famous red beach and even the white beach of Santorini.

santorini athinios port cruise cheap

The cheap sailing cruises to the volcano are very popular and it shouldn’t cost you more than 40-50 euros per person. They usually last about 5 hours and there is one in the morning and on the afternoon. You can book the cheap Santorini boat tour here.

santorini cruise

This is on board the cheap Santorini boat tour. The cheap Santorini boat tour will take you to the volcano, the hot springs and the island of Thirassia. These tours are carried out on large wooden sailing boats (with a motor though) and in the high season they sell out quickly so you should book it well in advance.

spiriakos santorini food

Spiridakos boat tour in Santorini is one of the most famous and well-established tour operators on the island with decades of experience. If you hop on one of their tours (usually on a catamaran), you will also be offered (included in the price) a full meal and drinks as there are people on board cooking it. You can book Spiridakos sailing cruise here .

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE SANTORINI BOAT TOURS

  • Cheap boat tours that will take you to the volcano, the hot springs and the sunset (around 3-4 hours and usually in large sailing boats with more than 20 people – no food is offered on board and they usually depart from Athinios port Cost: approx 30-40 euros per person
  • Catamaran boat tours that will take you to the same route (pretty much) but will usually pick you up from your hotel and also offer you lunch or bbq on board (around 5-6 hours) in a smaller group of people (usually 5- 10 people on the catamaran) – Cost: approx 100-200 euros per person
  • Luxury VIP Boat Tours that will also take you to the same route for about 5-6 hours but will usually offer a luxury lunch on board and a luxury boat, catamaran or even a luxury yacht – Cost: more than 200 euros per person
  • All tours are of excellent quality with very experienced crew, and whenever food is offered, it will be of high quality (usually seafood and fresh fish).
  • There are usually two boat tours per day for every operator : morning tour (no sunset) and an afternoon tour (sunset included). The morning tour will allow you more time to swim but doesn’t include the sunset. The afternoon boat tour will give you the opportunity to enjoy the famous sunset.
  • If you are on a honeymoon you MUST do a boat tour and preferably one on a catamaran as this will provide more luxury, though it is more expensive. There is nothing wrong with the cheapest ones and they are great, too if you are on a budget.
  • Most of the Santorini Boat tours operate between mid April and end of October . but there are a couple of boat tours that also operate till the end of November.
  • The famous Spiridakos Boat Tour is this one that you can book instantly . Spiridakos and his crew have decades of experience on Santorini boat tours and they are famous for their tours.
  • You shouldn’t worry if you are easily getting seasick because the waters are almost always very calm because you will be sailing mostly in the sea lagoon, which is calm 99% of the time.
  • If you book one of the most expensive private boat tours then you would have the opportunity to change the departure and arrival times as per your needs (but these tours can be expensive)
  • The best website to book a tour is  Get Your Guide   with hundreds of available tours that you actually have to book online

7 Best Santorini Boat Tours for an Unforgettable Experience

Greek Island Bucket List is an Amazon Associate and participant in other affiliate programmes. I earn from qualifying purchases. Please see my disclaimer for more information.

In terms of the best day trips for your Santorini holiday / vacation, taking a boat tour is a unique experience up there with the Fira to Oia caldera hike and a wine tour of some of Santorini’s best wineries. Private tours are available as well as small and larger group tours.

Wooden boat with tall masts in turquoise water

Whether you want to venture out to the volcano and hot springs and watch the famous Santorini island sunset from the sea, or you’re keen to tour the Red and White Beaches there’s a Santorini boat tour for your trip to the island.

A sunset cruise around the caldera is a really special way to spend an evening, but it’s not your only option. There are various boat tour options below to choose from. I’ll also share my own experience of one of the Santorini boat trips that was a highlight of my stay.

Catamaran boat facing the Santorini sunset

Use the information below to book the best Santorini boat trip for you .

First, A Little Bit of History

Before the last major volcanic eruption in the area nearly 4000 years ago, the island we now know as Thira/Santorini was a part of a round landmass.

After that eruption, all that was left was Thira/Santorini, Thirassia island (an inhabited island of under 200 people) and the uninhabited island of Aspronisi.

boat tours santorini

Over time, magma slowly but regularly flowed out. The many layers created Palea island and Nea Kameni which are the peaks of a large underwater volcano.

Since that last massive eruption, the Santorini volcano has stayed dormant and is not considered an active volcano.

boat tours santorini

Having said that, it could erupt again in the future. Luckily scientists, including NASA, are keeping an eye on so we’ll get a bit of warning if it does! (There’s another volcano a bit further out in the sea that is set to erupt in the medium term.)

In the meantime, the only way you’d know there is magma several kilometers below this area is the hot spring water at Palea . Plus the hot gases that you can see coming out of the fumaroles in the craters at Nea Kameni.

boat tours santorini

If you book a Santorini boat tour you’ll likely get to spend time on or around these areas.

Where Do the Boat Trips Go?

In Santorini, the boat tours are available as different combinations . So you can find something that fits your schedule and your budget .

Options are usually:

  • Boat trip to the volcanic islands of the caldera only
  • Boat tour with stops at the Nea Kameni volcano and Palea Kameni hot springs
  • Sunset tour that has a volcano tour and hot springs stop and then takes you out in the water to see the sunset
  • Romantic sunset cruise that includes the above but also offers dinner and drinks onboard
  • Full-day cruise that includes the above plus visits to the Red and White Beaches on Santorini’s south coast

What to Know About the Santorini Hot Springs

When you visit Santorini and hear about the hot springs it’s important to understand what they’re like. Some people have been disappointed because they were expecting something a little bit different .

Temperature

The hot springs here mix with the seawater so the water’s about 32° not the 40°+ (Celsius) you might have been expecting. Also, there’s no beach on the volcanic islands so it’s only a short stop for swimming.

boat tours santorini

Swimming Ability

Because of the rocky coastline, the boats have to stop at least about 50 meters back . That means you have to swim at least the distance from the boat to the hot springs , stay in the water, and then swim back to the boat.

The water is very deep and getting back to the boat can be against the waves . In April/May the seawater before the hot springs will be cold (about 18°).

All in all, be confident in your swimming ability to get off the boat at this stop .

Wear a Dark Coloured Swimsuit

The hot springs are made up of sulphur which makes the water look red . The colour will stain a white swimsuit/bikini so ideally wear something dark.

Santorini Boat Trip Options

How long does the boat tour last.

Your Santorini boat tour will usually last between three and six hours depending on the option you choose. I have seen two-hour trips advertised that go solely to the volcano and back. But normally the shorter trips are three hours and include a stop at the hot springs stop too.

For a sunset cruise with dinner expect to leave in the early afternoon and be out for about six hours.

How Much Do Santorini Boat Tours Cost?

Again, the boat tour prices vary based on the option you go for. Prices change based on:

  • the length of the trip
  • whether the boat tour includes sunset and/or dinner
  • the type of boat you choose
  • whether it’s a large group trip, small group tour or a completely private boat tour
  • whether volcano tours are included

The shorter group trip boat tours start at around 25 euro per person. Sunset cruises with dinner can be more like 80 – 90 euro.

boat tours santorini

Private Boat Tour

If you can stump up the cash then choose a private boat tour. You’ll be able to influence the itinerary better and you can create the vibe you want onboard.

I was a bit worried with the group tour it would be very loud with lots of drunken youngsters. Luckily my experience wasn’t like that in May, but in the peak season people do get packed onto the boats for the group tours.

Where Do the Boat Tours Start?

The Santorini boat trips set sail from various points on the island. Check where they start and finish and whether they include hotel pick up to find the best option for you.

boat tours santorini

Boat tours start and finish from:

  • Athinios Port
  • Old Port of Fira (where the cable car is)
  • Ammoudi Bay
  • Vlychada Port

Some of the group boat tours have two pick up points, so will start at Vlychada Port and then head to Ammoudi Bay for a second set of guests.

Where Do the Boat Tours Stop for Sunset?

Obviously, in the height of summer, there are a lot of boats out for the sunset tour. So they stop at various points and spread out along Santorini’s caldera.

Some of the boat tours will have their boats stop below Oia village . Others stop near Akrotiri . Some of the private and small group cruises stop on land at Thirasia . Either way, you’ll get a magnificent sunset view.

How to Choose the Best Boat Tours for You

There are loads of boat tours in Santorini so picking one can feel a bit overwhelming . In the peak season just choose one that fits your schedule and isn’t booked up yet. They’re a popular activity so don’t leave it too close to arriving.

Day or Sunset Trip?

The biggest thing to decide is probably whether to do a day or sunset cruise .

The day cruises have more emphasis on swimming and snorkelling . (Check whether snorkeling equipment is included or if you need to bring your own.) If you choose one that starts at Ammoudi Bay you can go there first for a fresh fish lunch.

For the evening cruises, there’s a bit less swimming time since a portion of time is allocated to watching the sunset .

boat tours santorini

Most tours -if not all of the Santorini boat tour options that include lunch or dinner – will have vegetarian options . With these, wine, beer and sometimes ouzo are included , but other spirits are not.

On the boat tour I was on, the bar opened with the meal and you could buy a bigger variety of alcohol than what was included in the open bar.

The Best Santorini Boat Tours

Although you will see many places advertising boat tours in Santorini it can be good to look online for reviews before booking.

Some of the best boat tours are on Get Your Guide so have a look there for your sailing cruise. I’ve included some of their listings below. I’ve also added some other companies who offer Santorini boat tours including the one I’ve done.

1. Private Romantic Catamaran Cruise with BBQ Meal

For a friendly and professional crew who’ll listen to your desires for your private tour , you can’t do much better than  this private catamaran cruise .

Day cruise and sunset tour options are available and of course, hotel pick up is included . As a guide you’ll set off from Ammoudi Bay, take in the sights around the caldera, bathe in the hot springs, stop at Mesa Pigadia and swim in front of the Red Beach.

Lunch or dinner is a beautiful Greek meal with local wine, beer and soft drinks. If you want to post to the ‘Gram while the catamaran sails then you can use the onboard wifi to do so!

2. Private Day Cruise with Barbeque and Drinks

This is  another private cruise  that might be nice to celebrate a special occasion with.

For this boat ride, you get a speed boat . And this trip includes a stop at the volcanic island if you want to walk up and see the craters that are still smoking with hot gases.

boat tours santorini

3. Small Group Romantic Catamaran Cruise

A small group option for your  Santorini boat tour is this romantic cruise . Again, numbers are limited and two cruises, day and sunset options, are available.

In the morning you leave from Ammoudi Bay and head straight for the hot springs. After that, you’ll head around the small island of Aspronisi and onto Mesa Pigadia Beach (one of the island’s hidden gems) for your barbequed Greek meal.

You’ll end up at Vlychada marina but not before you’ve had a swim in the waters off the Red Beach .

The evening option basically reverses this, missing out Mesa Pigadia Beach (Black Beach) and includes watching the sunset.

4. All-Inclusive Luxury Catamaran Small Group Cruise

This is another small group option that can be booked as a  morning or afternoon/sunset small group cruise .

Your first stop is at the Red Beach for a swim and snorkel and the second is at the beautiful white beach for more of the same. You also get 30 minutes to swim at the hot springs .

Pick-ups, food, drinks and towels are included . All you need to bring is snorkeling equipment if you want to use it. This catamaran tour doesn’t include a stop at the volcano .

5. Catamaran Cruise with Lunch & Open Bar

This is a  popular and highly-rated sailing cruise  that runs morning and evening. You start at Vlychada Port and sail past the Red Beach and White Beach plus Akrotiri Lighthouse before stopping for a swim at the hot springs.

After that, you get another chance to swim in the Aegean sea at Mesa Pigadia .

The evening cruise includes the sunset view and both options include a delicious meal.

6. Santorini Volcano Sunset Tour

Another of the  best boat tours  is this one, and it’s the particular Santorini boat tour that I did.

boat tours santorini

I’d seen the traditional wooden fishing boat with its big sails a number of times when I was staying on Thirassia island. It was often mid-cruise when I was getting the boat back from Ammoudi Bay in the evenings and I wanted to go on it!

I really enjoyed this sailing cruise. Obviously, all the fishing equipment has been removed and a bar has been installed on the deck. There was plenty of open-air seating on the top deck as well as covered tables and chairs inside.

boat tours santorini

We stopped at the hot springs and volcano (and had a guided volcano tour from the local guide who accompanied our trip). We had another s wimming stop just before Thirassia island at Korfi Bay (I was the only person who took advantage of that swim, the Aegean Sea is a bit chilly in May!).

After that, we had our meal which was great. We had a big fresh Greek salad, and then loads of vegetables, rice and two different types of meat with a vegetarian option available.

boat tours santorini

After dinner, we cruised along the Santorini caldera below the picturesque villages that were starting to twinkle with lights . We stopped below Oia and watched the beautiful sunset from there.

7. Kayak Tour

If you’re feeling adventurous you can do a different type of boat tour, a kayak tour of the island’s south coast . Like other Santorini boat tours, there’s a  morning  and  sunset  option. I did the morning version of this and it was one of the best tours I did in Santorini . I had an unforgettable day.

On either, you’ll visit Red beach and White beach . Your stop at Mesa Pigadia includes some swimming and snorkelling and a gorgeous picnic on the rocks.

boat tours santorini

What’s exciting about this experience is that you get to explore sea caves and secluded bays that you wouldn’t on a sailing trip.

Oh, and by the way, no experience needed for this one. The kayaks are for two people if that makes you feel more confident, too.

More Photos

Inside the boat.

I know you’re wondering if the tourist boats have toilets and the answer is yes . The catamarans and boats for longer tours have decent toilet and shower facilities.

These ones were down some rather steep stairs.

boat tours santorini

I sat at the back of the boat on these cushions that ran round in a horse shoe shape. I liked being outside and able to see all around .

6 Best Santorini Boat Tours – Unforgettable! (tips + photos)

Last updated on November 9, 2023 by Claire Robinson - this article contains affiliate links. If you purchase through them, I get a small commission ( more )

If you have several days on the island, I strongly suggest enjoying a Santorini boat tour.  This is the best way to appreciate the unique landscape of the submerged caldera and to admire the colors of the cliffs! Below is my guide to help you choose the best Santorini boat trip for you. Spoiler alert: my favorite is the catamaran cruise!

Before all my tips + photos, let me share my favorites to plan your Santorini trip:

Before my tips + photos, here are my favorites for Santorini:

My favorite platform to rent a car in Santorini: DiscoverCars

The unmissable boat tour: Full day catamaran along the cliffs

My favorite excursion: the Highlights Tour

My favorite places to stay:

  • In Oia, the most famous area on the cliffs:  Marizan Caves
  • In Fira, the most central to explore by bus:  Keti Hotel
  • In Kamari for a stay by the beach:  Hotel Sunshine

Why a boat trip in Santorini is a must-do…

Let’s start with a picture as I believe this tells it all…

Santorini boat tour to the volcano

How better to appreciate the cliffs of Santorini that are between 150 and 300m (500 to 1000ft) in height than from a small boat exploring the caldera? When sailing between the islands of the volcanic archipelago, it is hard to believe that it was once a single large landmass that sink during a huge eruption around 1600 B.C. But it allows you to see the strates of rocks recording history in the cliffs, and how humans took over the top of them. All boat tours will take you inside the caldera.

But you can also take longer tours that will allow you to also admire the colors of South coast, as you can see on the picture below.

Santorini Catamaran Cruise

In my opinion, a boat tour is a must-do in Santorini to fully appreciate the unique landscape.

6 best Santorini Boat Tours – How to choose + Tips

Before sharing more pictures of Santorini from the sea, below is a summary of my tips to choose your boat adventure in Santorini:

  • To see more of the scenery –  The full day Catamaran Cruise in Santorini is my favorite option – small groups and lots of scenery including the South Coast Check out the program and book
  • Focus on the volcanic island – if you are more interested in the volcanic lava and hot springs, opt for the Santorini volcanic islands cruise – you can even walk on the path to the crater Check out program and book
  • If you are short in time – then you can book a quicker tour from the Thira old port to the hot springs. You will enjoy beautiful views under 3h Check out this option
  • For a romantic option – if you want to enjoy the sunset with a smaller crowd of people around you, joining a sunset cruise in Santorini is a good choice See several options
  • For the more active of you – there are several tours possible kayaking along the cliffs of Santorini this will be an unforgettable experience See options
  • For a cheaper option – if you are arriving on one of the largest ferries between the islands, you can go outside and admire the views as you approach Santorini Book your ferries

Below is a video of my first choice, the catamaran cruise, to give you a better idea of what to expect! (Note, I did not swim because I had a twisted ankle):

Tips for your boat tour around Santorini

  • If you are staying over 3 days, book your boat tour at the beginning of your trip. This way, if the wind prevents you from doing it, you may be able to rebook on a later day.
  • Bring socks – as well as layers of clothes (the wind can get chilly) – it can be strange but when you are at the front of the catamaran with the wind, your feet are first to get cold – we were all coving our feet with our towels
  • If you go for a swim, you have to be able to swim 50m without holding anything, even to go to the hot springs since there is no beach – they give you objects to help you float, but still
  • Don’t go into the hot springs if you have an open wound
  • Don’t bring jewelry when swimming in the hot Spring, and avoid light color swimsuits (especially white) as they will stain
  • Cover yourself to prevent sunburns!

Volcano boat Tours in Santorini -oia coast

#1 – The Santorini Catamaran Cruise for a day – sailing adventure!

Let’s start with my favorite option: the Catamaran Cruise. They will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the Vlichada marina . It is quite well organized, they have many catamarans and many minibus picking up guests.

I booked this one via Getyourguide and had a great time. Full day cruise don’t seem to be running any more. You can find 5 hour cruise, that do the South coast with Red and White Beach – see options

Santorini Catamaran Cruise - pick up

Then you board your catamaran, get set up. What I love about this option is that you are not surrounded with 50 other people. You are a small group on your catamaran. However you are surrounded by other catamarans with makes for great pictures. You start by cruising the whole south Coast to head first to the volcano. The scenery is stunning, but you are not stopping yet.

Santorini Catamaran Cruise - south coast

As you approach the island of Palea Kameni, you can sail really close to shore and admire the volcanic rock.

Boat santorini volcano

Your first swim spot is at one of the main hot springs around Palea Kameni. Sadly I could not go as I had twisted my ankle. Note that other boats are stopping there and it is quite busy! You have to swim around 30m from your boat to the warm waters which are normally between 30 and 35°C (86 to 95ºF).

Palea Kameni hot spring

Back on board you sail back towards the South Coast, close to shore. You first admire the Akrotiri lighthouse above the beautiful rainbow cliffs.

Akrotiri lighthouse

Then one of my favorite parts, was when we sail around the black cliffs. They are straight and tall, and we could approach and admire Nature’s sculpture work of erosion

Santorini Catamaran Cruise - black cliff

Then you past the white cliffs of White Beach.

Amazing South coast cliffs on a Santorini Catamaran Cruise

And you head to Red Beach and enjoy another swim with magnificent views!

Santorini Catamaran Cruise - red beach

  • Although you are on a catamaran, you are not sailing most of the time but using the motor. We lifted the sail only for the last 30min
  • Food is cooked onboard with cold salads, meat and fish. I was surprised by the choice of food and it was quite good.
  • Be aware that all catamarans have a tendency to play loud music. I really don’t understand why, as it distracts from the experience, but some people do enjoy it.

  • For the charm: Oia –  See best-rated accommodations
  • To explore by bus: Fira –  See best-rated accommodations
  • To enjoy the beach & nightlife: Kamari –  See best-rated accommodations
  • For cheaper options: Emporio –  See best-rated accommodations

#2 & 3 – Volcano Tours in Santorini & boat tours to hot springs

Another famous boat tour in Santorini is the one focusing on the volcano. It departs from the main port and takes you around the volcanic islands with the hot springs. Check out program

Your first stop at Nea Kameni where you can take the path up to the volcano with brilliant views of the area.

Volcano boat Tours in Santorini -oia coast

Then you sail to Palea Kameni and the same hot spring as the catamaran cruise goes to. It is easily identified with the small white church. Here you can go for a swim.

Santorini hot spring

Then you will sail to Thirassia, the second largest island, where you have free time and can climb the stairs to the village of Manolas. During the summer months, you can take the option to extend with a sunset tour in Oia.

Old port of Fira

Need to rent a car in Santorini?

  • Compare prices on my favorite platform:   Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
  • Don’t take a car too large, since village streets can be narrow
  • Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
  • Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!

See all my tips

#4 – Oia sunset cruises

Oia is famous for its sunset. It is like the whole island flocks to Oia 1h before sunset and everyone is trying finding a good spot.

If you want a more peaceful experience, a sunset cruise can be a good alternative. There are several tours in large or small boats (so with more or less people) and even private options. Some start with some swimming activities, other combine with the hot spring. If you have several days you can do one sunset from land and one sunset from the water.

#5 – Kayaking in Santorini

With a kayak, you won’t be able to go as far, but you will take the time to enjoy the fascinating cliffs on the South Coast. This is a great way to stay close to shore and notice the landscape and old houses.

#6 – Santorini boat tour – cheap alternative

If you are short in time or in cash, arriving in Santorini by ferry is a good way to admire the coastline. On the smaller ferries you can’t really go out. But on the larger ones, if the weather permits, you can go to the deck until the final approach to the port. My pictures below were take on the ferry from Mykonos.

The 7 Best Santorini Boat Tours [2024 Reviews]

Santorini is a popular destination because there are so many fantastic things to see and do around the island of Thira.

A cruise around the island and into the caldera is the best way to truly appreciate the stunning volcanic scenery of the Santorini Caldera.

There are a wide variety of Santorini boat tours & cruises to choose from.  Visit the active volcano at the center of the caldera and swim in the hot springs. Relax on a catamaran and snorkel in the warm waters in a peaceful cove off the coast of Thira.

The kind of cruise you choose is entirely up to your personal interests and taste. I’ve selected 7 top-rated Santorini boat trips that I believe are the best.

Santorini Boat Tour Reviews

1. santorini volcano & thirassia sunset dinner cruise.

  • Departure Point : Hotel pick-up
  • Departure Time: Around 2:00 PM (time will vary with sunset times)
  • Duration : 6 hours
  • Includes : 6-hour cruise, buffet dinner, wine, and swim in a hot spring

Santorini is world-famous for its stunning sunset views, and observing this from a cruise ship is a unique experience you should have at least once in your life.

But your cruise doesn’t start with the sunset. Before then, you’ll climb to the top of an active volcano on Nea Kameni Island and see the volcanic fumes rise from sulfur vents.

And, if you’re feeling brave, you can swim in a hot spring on the nearby island of Palea Kameni.

The boat will also sail to Thirasia Island, the other inhabited island of the Santorini Caldera. There the ship will anchor offshore while you enjoy a buffet dinner or chicken rolls, pork rolls, baked potato, and rice.

Sip local wine as you admire the views across the caldera. At the end of the day, enjoy sailing into the sunset as your ship returns to Santorini.

Ensure that you take a good quality camera along, because this cruise will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

  • Includes : 5-hour cruise, Greek barbecue buffet, unlimited local wines or soft drinks, snorkeling equipment, safety equipment, towels, and guided tour

If you enjoy small group cruises, superb scenery, Greek food, and snorkeling, this the best Santorini catamaran tour for you.

Santorini is blessed with many excellent beaches, and your cruise will begin with two of the most famous: Red Beach and White Beach.

Named for the color of their cliffs and sand, both are great places to enjoy swimming and snorkeling with the equipment provided.

Next, you’ll sail past Akrotiri lighthouse, which is one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece built by the French in 1892. Below the lighthouse, you can admire the sea caves and beautiful rock formations of the southern coastline of Santorini.

Your crew will prepare a delicious buffet lunch together with a Greek Salad and mezes. While admiring the landscape around the caldera, you can enjoy unlimited wine or soft drinks.

And if you’ve chosen the evening cruise, you can enjoy a fantastic sunset over the Aegean Sea.

3. Santorini: Luxury Sunset Cruise

  • Departure Time: 3:00 PM (time will vary with sunset times)
  • Includes : 5-hour catamaran cruise, lunch & dessert, open bar, island map, Wi-Fi, towels, and snorkeling equipment

This is a fantastic, all-inclusive cruise around the Santorini Caldera and Santorini Island’s southern coast. You’ll see the Red, Black, and White Beaches and the two small islands in the center of the caldera, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni.

When the catamaran sails along the southern coastline, you’ll pass Akrotiri lighthouse, a 128-year-old lighthouse original built by the French.

Get your camera ready for the stunning rocky landscape with breathtaking cliffs and romantic sea caves.

Anchoring near Palea Kameni, you’ll have the opportunity to swim in a cove filled with hot spring water heated to between 86 0 F and 95 0 F by the active volcano below.

You can use the snorkeling equipment provided to explore the underwater volcanic formations.

Finally, the catamaran will anchor off the coast of Thirassia Island. There the crew will prepare a delicious dinner for you complete with dessert and wine.

As the sun sets over the Aegean Sea, you can sip drinks from the open bar and admire the beauty of nature.

4. Romantic Sunset Cruise With King Thiras In The Caldera

  • Departure Times: 6:00 PM (time may vary with sunset times)
  • Duration : 4 Hours
  • Includes : 4-hour wooden sailboat cruise and buffet dinner

This is the best sunset cruise in Santorini for anyone fascinated by the great age of sail. You’ll cruise around Santorini Island aboard a genuine wooden sailboat.

After sailing from Athinios, your sailing ship will take you around the Santorini caldera to admire the amazing landscape of this giant active volcano.

Aboard ship, the crew will prepare you a tasty buffet dinner. While you enjoy your food, the captain will select a tranquil position within the caldera from where you can watch a beautiful sunset over the Aegean Sea.

This boat tour from Santorini offers amazing value for money for anybody who simply wants to enjoy a meal and a sunset aboard a romantic sailboat. You’ll enjoy the atmosphere and the stunning scenery.

5. Santorini: 5-Hour Luxury Catamaran Lunch & Sunset Cruise

  • Departure Times : 10:00 AM or 3:30 PM
  • Includes : 5-hour catamaran cruise, personal insurance, snacks & mezes with soft drinks & local wines or beer, gourmet Greek lunch, dessert, Wi-Fi, mystery gift, and snorkeling equipment

On this great scenic tour, you have the choice between joining an early cruise with lunch or a late cruise with dinner and a fantastic sunset.

The cruise includes a stop at the famous White Beach where the cliffs, pebbles, and sand are… white. This makes a sharp contrast with many of the other black sand beaches or the nearby Red Beach.

Anchored off the White Beach, you can swim or snorkel in the beautiful blue water of the Aegean Sea. You’ll also sail into the caldera to explore the small islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the center.

At Palea Kameni, you can swim in the hot spring cove heated by volcanic activity deep underground. The mineral-rich, orange-tinged water is believed to be therapeutic.

This cruise also includes tasty mezes, a gourmet Greek meal, and dessert. If you’ve chosen the later sunset cruise, you can sip local wine while watching the sun go down over the Aegean Sea.

6. Santorini Sunset Fishing Trip With Dinner & Drinks

  • Departure Times : 3:30 PM (time may vary with sunset times)
  • Includes : 5-hour fishing trip on a traditional fishing boat, fishing equipment & live bait, learn how to prepare and cook a seafood meal, snorkeling equipment, towels, dinner, unlimited local drinks, and full trip insurance

This is by far my favorite Santorini cruise. As part of a small group on a traditional fishing boat, you observe or help the crew lift shrimp nets filled with local marine life, like shrimp, squid and octopus, then the crew teaches you how to prepare and cook it.

With enthusiastic local experts, you’ll learn lots about local marine life and the traditions among the local fishermen. You’ll also get to see the stunning landscape of the caldera and watch the sunset over the Aegean Sea.

Using the snorkeling equipment provided, you can dive under the waves into the crystal-clear water and see the marine life in its natural setting. Alternatively, you can sunbathe in the remaining daylight on the deck.

If you want to fish some more, you can use the fishing rods and live bait provided. You get to eat what you’ve cooked while sipping unlimited local drinks.

  • Departure Times : 9:30 AM or 2:30 PM
  • Includes : 5-hour catamaran cruise, snacks, barbecue meal, open bar, towels, Wi-Fi, and snorkeling equipment

If you want to tour all the unique beaches and landmarks on the south coast of Santorini, this is a great tour for you. You’ll visit the Red Beach at Akrotiri, sail past Akrotiri lighthouse, view the White Beach and stop at Mesa Pigadia Beach.

During the Red Beach stop, you’ll have the opportunity to swim in the warm Aegean Sea or snorkel beneath the waves with the equipment provided.

The vivid colors of the wild red cliffs, red pebbles, and red sand make this one of the most popular beaches to visit.

Entering the central caldera, you’ll sail to the tiny island of Palea Kameni. Here you’ll see the famous hot springs heated by continuing volcanic activity.

The orange-tinted spring water enters a shallow cove off the island’s coast and is believed to provide therapeutic benefits. The spring’s temperature is always between 86 0 F and 95 0 F.

The Simplified Guide to Boat Tours in Santorini

Boat tours are a great way to see the volcano, hot springs and Thirassia. They take you out of the tourist traps like the bus tours and give you a unique experience that is hard to find anywhere else in Europe. You’re surrounded by gorgeous scenery and breathtaking views.

How much do boat tours cost? Do they offer free transfers? Do they offer free food and drinks? Are they worth it? Are you missing out on the breathtaking views of the Caldera, the Volcano, the Hot Springs and other amazing places because you’re not traveling on a boat? Do you want to learn more ?

All these questions will be answered here! This guide explores all these aspects and more in detail. Give yourself an opportunity to discover Santorini for yourself! So, we’re going to travel together through all the highlights of this wonderful island! Let’s get started!

Santorini boat tours simplified

Scheduled (fixed departure time & route) boat trips, custom (departure time & route) boat trips.

These are the three types of scheduled boat tours that you can select from:

Private boat tours

Private boat tour

They are usually operated by smaller catamarans or power boats. The departure is either from the port of Vlychada or the port of Ammoudi in Oia. Usually there is an option for either a day cruise of for an evening cruise (sunset cruise) as well as variable options for the duration of the excursion. These types of tours run exclusively for individuals or small groups of people that want to enjoy the experience privately. Chartering a small boat exclusively is the way to guarantee the privacy you need. I mean who wants strangers to his party? Not surprising these private boat tours are the most expensive of all and the prices vary depending on the number of people, the type of the boat and the duration of the trip.

Semi-private boat tours

semi private boat tour

They are usually operated by bigger catamarans or power boats. The departure is either from the port of Vlychada or the port of Ammoudi in Oia. You can select either a day cruise or an evening cruise (sunset cruise) as well as variable options for the duration of the excursion. These type boat tours are designed for small groups of people and individuals (usually 8-16 people) that want to enjoy the experience of a boat trip on the Caldera but they don’t want to pay for the premium of chartering a boat to themselves. In my opinion this is the most cost-efficient and the best value for money selection for enjoying the experience, seeing the views and not breaking the bank. So if you don’t mind socializing a beat on the boat semi-private tour is the way to go.

Shared boat tours

shared boat tour santorini

These type of boat tours are usually organized by larger boats that can take up to 200 people on them. Although it can and it does get really crowded especially during the mid season and the high season these sea excursions are a very good way to enjoy everything while being on a tight budget.

Custom boat tours

An experience you will never forget (guaranteed).

custom boat tour sunset

If you want to create a unique boat tour that is totally different from the other boats at sea then this is the option for you. All the boats on the scheduled tours depart roughly the same time and they make the same stops. Inevitably the sea gets really crowded as many boats are at the same location the same time. If paying the extra money is not an issue for you then this option is definitely the way to go. You can depart from any location at any time and create your custom route that will include all the points of interest that you would like to see. Avoid the crowded beaches that and explore the hidden gems of Santorini in a relaxing and enjoyable way.

Sunrises and sunsets in Santorini: The new Sandblu resort reviewed

Part of the Cyclades islands in the southern area of the Aegean Sea, the volcanic island of Santorini is renowned for its whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches and stunning sunsets. Formed from a volcanic eruption, its dramatic cliffs encircle a breathtaking caldera filled with azure waters. You’ll find the newly opened SandBlu resort seamlessly built into the foot of the ancient Mesa Vuono mountain in Kamari, on the south east coast with elevated panoramic sea views and its famous black sand beach just minutes away. Direct flights into the island’s small airport will have you sipping on a Grecian cocktail within four hours of leaving London. What are you waiting for? Yammas!

The white stoned complex boasts 27 rooms, 22 suites and 2 villas that gently cascade down from the mountainside which are all elegantly designed with the true essence of Greece in mind. The epitome of luxury in every detail and the most sophisticated hotel of Santorini by far. The islands’ radiant sunshine naturally lights up every living space giving a sense of tranquillity and calm. Each room has all the amenities you could wish for including air con, wifi, mini-bar and a fully-equipped en suite bathroom.

Whichever you choose, you’ll take comfort in the opulence that surrounds you, along with the elevated views and privacy that the architecture of the complex creates - so much so, I dared to skinny-dip in our pool each morning. I especially enjoyed the garden areas giving life to pomegranate trees and the landscaping of the green roof gardens.

Food and drink

Our first evening was spent in the hotels main restaurant, Apnea, which translates to ‘breathless’ and the al fresco views of the Aegean sea as you tuck into the modern Greek cuisine certainly take your breath away. Local fresh seafood dishes are the head chefs speciality and we enjoyed fresh Cretan cherry tomatoes with carob rusks and sea fennel, grilled Scorpion Fish with kakkavia sauce and fennel, milk-fed lamb with fermented grains, eggplant and grape leaf, all washed down with a local cocktail created by the restaurants’ mixologist.Breakfast and lunch is served in their other restaurant Plateia which is nestled into the heart of the complex with a sunkist terrace and poolside dining tables. Start your day with traditional Greek dishes such as milk pie or strapatsada (scrambled eggs combined with a rich tomato sauce and salty feta) or my favourite - the Greek pancakes (the head chef Theodore’s grandmother’s recipe – delicious) ... all washed down with a Greek coffee and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. For lunch, we opted for a meze of Octopus with wild greens,  Greek salad and the classic Charcoal Beef Soutzoukaki but the star of the show was the Garides Koiladas – intensely red king prawns fished at a depth of 300 metres in the Valley of Ermionida – a very sought after delicacy and an absolute must if you love your seafood. The majority of the staff are of Greek origin and service was warm and natural. Being an independent hotel, it benefits from not having ‘over-trained’ staff.

You’ll also find an artisanal bakery onsite serving sandwiches, pastries, fruit tarts, tea and smoothies for a more relaxed and informal refuelling. We took our pastries and juices to the central chill out area to soak up the sun whilst devouring them. And finally, onto Aroma the charming onsite wine bar which features a curated collection of local and international wines. Paired with local cheese platter or Greek tapas. Divine. Like your ‘κρασί’? (greek for wine – you’ll need this word in your vocabulary), book their wine tasting class for an elevated experience.

If you’re looking to unwind and slip into a world of tranquillity, head straight to the resorts Aurora Spa and treat yourself to a choice of massages, facials or body treatments. We opted for a couples massage which was 80 minutes of pure relaxation and rejuvenation whilst being soothingly kneaded by their expert masseuses who took in our specific areas of need. The spa also boasts an indoor pool with soothing sea views, a sauna, steam room and rain showers. Feeling more energetic? Make full use of the fitness centre and training classes on offer. Maybe next time for me…

The complex also boasts two pools – the main ‘Blu’ infinity pool situated in front of Plateia so you can dip in and out between snacks whilst soaking in the sea views. The pool also has a separate area for kids making it an ideal hangout spot for families. If you’re in need of some child-free time, book them into ‘Bala’ the onsite kids’ club that combines the history of Greece with playtime. Educational fun! On the lower level you’ll discover ‘Aqua’ where you can laze around in the loungers and enjoy the resident DJs tunes whilst sipping on a cocktail (or two). You’ll also find several on-site retail shops scattered around so if you’re looking to treat yourself to a fancy holiday pair of shades or summer wear you won’t have to look far.The famous black-sanded beach of Kamari is a few minutes away (or an even shorter hotel buggy ride) which is an idyllic place to sunbathe and swim during the day or enjoy the lively evening tavernas at night. Sandblu offers its own private sunbed area away from the others with waiter service from Hook Bar so if you love to lose yourself for a few hours with a good book whilst sunbathing and taking the odd dip into the sea as I do whilst sipping on an ice cold drink and devouring a lamb souvlaki, this beach is the most popular of the island and a must. My only advice would be to wear sand shoes as the black sand gets pretty hot! (my wife chuckled as I did my best impression of a gecko on burning desert sand).

Extracurricular

If you do one thing in Santorini, take the Catamaran sunset cruise around the island to take in the stunning views and learn about the volcanic formation history of the area from the lively boat crew. Our Spiridakos Sailing Cruise took five hours which included Insta-opp views of the Red Beach of Aktotiri, the island’s iconic White Beach and several ‘jump in and snorkel’ moments – including one in the hot springs for a natural spa in the thermal volcanic mud waters - and concluded around 8.30pm as we watched the rather magnificent sunset. A truly magical experience. The trip also included drinks and a barbecue served towards the end. There are several tour operators but ours offered a transfer to and from our hotel making the whole excursion seamless. The boat captain, Leo, and his team really made the day a memorable one and Ibizan tunes played out throughout the trip.

The island is renowned for its guided walks along its dramatic cliffs for the optimal views of the azure waters. Head to the capital Thira for shopping inquaint Greek cobbled streets or Oia for unforgettable sunsets.

Which room?

Choose from rooms, suites or villas (17 of which have their own private pool) all within walking distance to the hotels restaurants, pools and spa. The higher you go, the more stunning the views are. We opted for the sea view suite with a pool to enjoy the early morning sunrises on the private terrace over a Greek coffee. Bliss.

Our trip was as a couple looking to escape our hectic lives for a bit of much needed time out. Families are also well catered for and the hotel’s location makes for an ideal base to explore the rest of the island (the islands’ bus service is well run or order a taxi).

Rooms start from £739 per night. BOOK HERE
