Cruise controls were once reserved for only selected models of BMW. Less fortunate drivers had to keep their tired eyes and limbs fixed on the road and the pedals for long hours. The BMW dynamic cruise control is an improvement over the traditional system. Traditional cruise control can only do so much as keep your vehicle going at a preset speed. Meanwhile, the dynamic version can detect other vehicles in front of you and road curves and react accordingly.

What is BMW Dynamic Cruise Control? 

In conventional cruise control , you set the vehicle to a certain speed. Your car will then automatically accelerate up to that speed and maintain it. The benefit is that the foot you keep on the gas pedal can get some rest. Also, as the car maintains the preset speed, it can save you from speeding tickets. 

Difference With Conventional Cruise Control

However, conventional cruise control doesn’t have the necessary technology to adjust your car according to upcoming obstacles. So, you must still watch out for another vehicle appearing or the road curving abruptly.

This is where Dynamic cruise control offers an improvement. Besides setting a speed, you can also set the following distance on your BMW cruise control.

When you are speeding across an open highway, the car will normally continue at its set speed. But your BMW will automatically slow down as soon as another vehicle or obstacle appears. When the obstacle moves away, your car will accelerate on its own and reach the preset speed again. 

How It Works?  

Three components work in concert to make dynamic cruise control possible. Firstly, there is the radar system. Your dynamic cruise control will shoot radar waves from the car. These waves reflect off the object in front of the vehicle and return to the car. 

Secondly, there is the sensor system. This system can receive the radar signals that come back from the objects and make necessary adjustments. There are two kinds of sensors in dynamic cruise control- Speed sensors and Distance Sensors. 

The Distance sensors keep track of the gap between your car and an upcoming obstacle based on the signals it receives. Meanwhile, speed sensors decelerate your vehicle when the gap is shorter than the following distance. Similarly, it will adjust to a faster speed when the path clears up.

The third component is the longitudinal controller. It is kind of like a computer that collects information from the radar and sensor systems. In light of that information, it sends appropriate command signals to the engine to slow down or accelerate the car.

How do I know if my BMW has dynamic cruise control?  

Almost all the newer BMW models have dynamic cruise controls. Examining the steering wheel is the simplest way to tell if your car has cruise control. 

Cars with dynamic cruise control will have 5-6 buttons on the left panel of the steering wheel. Depending on the specific BMW model the number and orientation of this switch might vary.

How To Use The BMW Dynamic Cruise Control? 

Renowned automakers like BMW are always trying to improve their vehicles in the next model. Therefore, slight differences in the cruise control panel on your steering wheel might exist.

However, almost all the systems have some things in common. For instance, you will always find the dynamic cruise control panel on the left side of the steering wheel. There are also various other similarities, based on which you can follow the steps below to operate the cruise control- 

Step 1: Turning On the Control  

You can turn on your cruise control by pressing the assisted drive button. You can identify it from the car-and-gauge drawing on it. You will notice a green sign (cruise control gauge) on the digital cluster when the system turns on. 

Step 2: Set Your Speed  

Next, you will set your speed and the following distance. The ‘Set’ button allows you to determine your constant speed. Dynamic cruise controls also have a speed limit assistant. You can use it to ensure the car is within your desired speed at all zones.

Step 3: Distance Setting

The digital cluster will show several lines indicating distance. Each line refers to one car length. You can use the distance buttons to reduce or increase the number of this line. The distance buttons are marked with plus and minus signs and function accordingly.

Suppose you set the following distance to two lines. In that case, your car will decelerate when you are two car lengths away from an obstacle. Whenever an obstacle appears ahead, the instrument cluster will show a sign which looks like a car.

Step 4: Speed Increments

Nesting between the distance control button is the rocker switch. It is smaller and also has plus and minus markings. It almost feels like a volume up and down button on audio devices. You can use this switch to increase the set speed. BMW allows speed increments of one and five mph.

Step 5: Cancel and Resume 

You can press the cancel button to turn off the dynamic cruise control in your car. The same happens when you hit the brakes. Press the resume button to return to the assisted driving mode at your preferred set speed and following distance.

How do I change from regular cruise control to dynamic cruise control?  

If your car has both controls, you can press the Cancel button for several seconds. This will switch between modes. Also, the main difference between regular and dynamic is in distance control. So, as soon as you activate the distance button, you enter the dynamic mode.

The dynamic cruise controls with top-notch technology and capabilities will cost around 2000-2500 dollars. However, you can get more basic and less capable systems at around 500 dollars (equipment plus labor costs). 

Does adaptive cruise control apply brakes? 

The distance and speed control features allow the adaptive cruise control to apply some amount of braking. It usually does this when encountering a traffic jam or a non-moving obstacle.  

Can you add adaptive cruise control after purchase?  

You can buy adaptive cruise control kits and add them to your car. However, your BMW must fulfill the design and technological requirements for the addition of this kit. Kits range from 250$ to 4000$ in price, and you will need automotive experts for the installation job.

Matt DeBord: Make sure that the wheel is turning. The wheel is turning. Wow, OK, it's an act of faith here.

Today, we're testing out BMW's largest SUV ever, the X7. I'm Matt DeBord. I get behind the wheel of the hottest cars and test them in real-world scenarios. Today, I'm testing all of the tech and driver-assistance features in the BMW X7 to see what's actually helpful and what's a gimmick. This is "Real Reviews" from Cars INSIDER.

BMW has added a seven-seater to its well-known lineup of SUVs. The new kid on the block is a big boy. It's an SUV version of the 7 Series Sedan, and what that means is that it's packed with premium features and lots of technology to assist in driving the ultimate driving machine. But before we hit the road, let's talk about the styling of the X7 and everything it has to offer.

The BMW X7 is, quite frankly, huge. It weighs in at nearly 3 tons and is 17 feet long. For the most part, it looks like what it's supposed to be: a mashup of the flagship 7 Series Sedan and a very beefed-up X5 SUV, but you can't ignore the most obvious feature: that absurdly massive kidney grill. It looks like it was borrowed from a 1920s Bentley. Love it or hate it, I sorta love it, there's no question that it's large and in charge. Inside the X7 is a den of luxury, just like the 7 Series. Everywhere you look, there's rich leather and gorgeous details, including a three-pane moonroof that floods the cabin with natural light. For the driver, some of the more hardcore sport-driving aspects have been sacrificed for outrageous comfort. You're surrounded by glossy black surfaces, brushed metal, and a lot of knobs, buttons, and shimmery screens. It's definitely over the top, and it should be for a $108,000 price tag. As for that third row, well, it's cozy, and if you have kids, they might like it way back there. But enough talking, let's put the X7 to the test.

I'm gonna take the X7 on a one-hour journey from downtown Manhattan to Montclair, New Jersey. Along the way, I'll test driving semi-autonomously with its dynamic cruise-control and lane-keep functions, I'll use my hands and voice to control the infotainment system, and I'll see if it can park and back up on its own.

OK, so now we're out on the highway in stop-and-go traffic, and I was able to activate the semi-self-driving feature that we were using in the city. So I've set the speed at 20. I'm gonna take it up to 50, and I set the following distance pretty far, which is the way I like it, and what will happen now is the adaptive cruise control and the lane-keep assist will keep the car in its lane. So I'm not using any brakes or accelerator here, I'm gonna just see if it'll whip me around the car that's in front of me, which it does. So this is this the experience I had driving it the other day, it's a little bit, it can be a little bit tentative at times. I think it's erring on the side of caution. This vehicle wants to be real careful about it speeding up when the system is on. So that's interesting, it should've warned me that guy was coming over into my lane, and I did not get a warning from the system, so you gotta be paying attention. You absolutely have to be paying attention. But overall, I think lane keep and dynamic cruise control are helpful features, not gimmicks.

So there's different gestures you can allegedly use within different functions on the infotainment system. So now we're in full-on nav, you see if I wave my hand like that, it throws up the menu, and if I sweep it back like that, it's supposed to go back to, see it's supposed to go back to being, to being not like it with these menus, but it doesn't always work. So if you do this, it turns the volume up. It's supposed to anyway. See, and then if you do that, it turns it back down. It's just, it's very confusing, y'know? There's a series of gestures that you should be able to use, sweeping gestures like that, OK, that wiped it clean, but now it's back. These gestures are a cool idea that don't always work as well as advertised, so I think this is a bit of a work in progress for BMW. I've had this experience on every BMW I've tested out that has this feature. The biggest gimmick is the gesture-control aspect of the infotainment system. Sounds good, never really works the way it's supposed to, and at times, because you're waving your hands around, it changes something that you don't want to change.

All right, let's try some voice-command features. You push this button on the steering wheel, the microphone button. Tune to 91.1FM.

BMW: I'm playing the frequency 91.1.

Matt: That was a little slower than what I'm used to. I use this system a lot to tune the radio nowadays, and it's pretty good for navigation, but it won't do things like... raise the temperature.

BMW: What temperature should I set?

Matt: Oh, wait, look at that! 72 degrees.

BMW: I'm setting the temperature on the driver's side to 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Matt: Ah, look at that, it does work! I was skeptical about that. I don't use it to change the temperature very much, but it will do it. Increase the fan.

BMW: The fan intensity can be set by voice only in automatic mode.

Matt: Oh, I don't know what that means. So as you can see, there's a couple of things you can do with it that are quite useful. You can somewhat manage the climate-control system, you can change the radio station or the SiriusXM station, and you can manage the navigation system.

OK, we've come to the end of our mini road trip, and we're going to test out the automated-parking feature to see if the BMW X7 can locate and parallel park itself. All right, it has not located the spot. Let's try it again. Oh, there we go, it found that spot. It's just not doing it, see? That's gonna crash into that car. OK, fail. Sorry, didn't work. It's kind of a gimmick, what do you think? Gimmick? I think it's a gimmick.

OK, now that our parking assistant, the automated-parking feature, has failed, we're gonna give the backup assistant a shot. Now we're gonna see if the car can back up. Seventy-six feet seems to know what it's doing. Does it make sure that the wheel is turning? The wheel is turning. And... It... Wow, OK, it's an act of faith here. That was a... That worked. That worked. Did you see the wheel spinning like crazy there though?

So there you have it, the BMW X7. As far as driving performance goes, it lives up to BMW's reputation. Now, as far as the stuff inside that we tested out, the features, I didn't like the gesture control in the infotainment system, and I think the parking-assist features either don't work very well or are downright scary when they do work. So the big question is, is it worth $108,000? And I think the answer is: yes. It's worth $108,000. BMW has done a good job with its largest-ever SUV.

Driver assistance systems are becoming increasingly more popular with each new model year release. BMW offers superlative options, which underscore why they are the ultimate driving machines. Currently, four different equipment specifications are available: Driving Assistant (SA 5AS) , Driving Assistant Plus (SA 5AT) , Driving Assistant Professional (SA 5AU) , and Motorway Assistant (OE 5AX) . For example, a BMW i7 xDrive60 with Motorway Assistant enables travel up to 85 mph without touching the steering wheel, granted the driver is attentive. Alternatively, an X3 sDrive30i equipped only with Driving Assistant, will not have this feature.

Each equipment specification will come with increasingly more features, which can be a distinguishing factor when deciding the best option for your lifestyle. Maybe you want an M4 Competition with minimal driver assistance or an i7 M70 with every available driver assistance feature. Let’s discuss what each tier offers.

Driving Assistant (SA 5AS) offers the following features; Collision Warning, Pedestrian and Cyclists Warning with City Braking Function, Road Sign Recognition, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Rear-end Collision Warning, and Exit Warning.

Driving Assistant Plus (SA 5AT) includes all the previous features with the addition of; Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Steering and Lane Control Assistant Basic (up to 111 mph), and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function (up to 111 mph).

Driving Assistant Professional (SA 5AU) adds significantly more features including; Steering and Lane Control Assistant (up to 130 mph), Rescue Lane Assistant, Emergency Stop Assistant, Avoidance Assistance, Road Priority Warning, Wrong-Way Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection, Crossing Traffic Warning (Front & Rear), Lane Change Assistant, and Traffic Light Detection with Hold Function.

Motorway Assistant: The Ultimate in Driver Assistance

The crème de la crème is the Motorway Assistant (OE 5AX) which includes all of the previously aforementioned features with the addition of Motorway Travel (without touching the steering wheel up to 85 mph) and Automatic Lane Change (by looking in the exterior mirror). Unfortunately, BMW doesn’t offer driver assistance systems to do your laundry or cook dinner – but that would be awesome right?

Lateral Guidance Assistance: How BMW Vehicles Take Over the Steering

BMW vehicles equipped with the proper optional equipment also have the ability to take over the steering of the vehicle and provide Lateral Guidance Assistance, which essentially aids the driver in staying in the appropriate lane by initiating corrective steering interventions if required. A multifunction steering wheel is used with touch detection, haptic feedback, and LED strips for visualizing the handling instructions displayed in the instrument cluster and central information display.

Systems which contain Lateral Guidance Assistance include:

  • Traffic Jam Assist (from 2013 in 3 generations)
  • Steering and Lane Control Assistant with Traffic Jam Assistant (from 2015 G11/G12 7 series)
  • Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection (from 2015 G11/G12 7 series)
  • Lane Change Assistant (from 2016 G30 5 series)
  • Avoidance Assistance (from 2016 G30 5 series)
  • Lane Departure Warning with Active Recirculation (from 2018 G05 X5)
  • Emergency Stop Assistant (from 2018 G05 X5)
  • Rescue Lane Assistant (from 2019 G20 3 series)
  • Motorway Assistant (from 2022 G70 7 series), and Automatic Lane Change by looking in the exterior mirrors (from 2023 G60 5 Series).

Functional characteristics of these systems vary depending on equipment specification – ranging from lane centering guidance, active steering intervention to execute lane changes, and automatic lateral arrangement to form an emergency lane to name a few.

To some, this technology may be intimidating and far-fetched, however, these systems seem to be evidence of our path towards an automated future of mobility – one I am very much looking forward to. When you put machine learning, artificial intelligence, sophisticated hardware/ software, and very intellectual people from around the world into a blender the output is surely going to be increased road safety that will propel us into the next generation of transportation.

BMW Driver Assistance Packages

BMW Driver Assistance Systems are a suite of advanced safety features that help to reduce driver stress and fatigue, and to prevent accidents. These systems use a variety of sensors, including cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings and to provide warnings or take corrective action if necessary.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
