From applying for an e-Visa to extending your stay, here's what you need to know about entry requirements for India © beavera / Getty Images

With its dense tapestry of cultures and landscapes, India feels like dozens of countries rolled into one, but a single visa will cover you for travel across more than 3 million sq km (more than a million sq miles) of territory, taking in everything from steamy jungles to the high passes of the Himalayas.

Every Indian state is as large and diverse as a nation, so take your time navigating this enormous and fascinating country. The good news is that visas are easy to obtain and allow plenty of time for exploring.

Here’s everything you need to know about visa requirements for India, from the application process for e-Visas to overland travel and extending your stay.

You'll probably need a visa to go to India

Almost everyone needs a visa to visit India , but for most nationalities, tourist visas are easy to obtain online or through your local Indian embassy or consulate. Citizens of 166 countries – including most nations in the EU and EEA, the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand, and many countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America – can apply for an e-Visa before traveling via a simple online form .

Applying online is a fairly painless process, and it will save you hours compared to applying in person at an embassy or through a visa agency (in countries where Indian embassies no longer issue visas directly). Tourist e-Visas are available with a validity of 30 days, one year or five years, with the one- and five-year visas allowing for multiple entries for a maximum stay of 180 days on each visit.

For one- and five-year tourist visas, applications are accepted up to 120 days in advance of travel. The 30-day visa allows two entries into India, which is handy if you’re planning a side trip to Nepal , and you can apply up to 30 days in advance of travel. All e-Visas take at least 72 hours to process, so be sure to apply in plenty of time (at least 4 days in advance is recommended).

Applying online is the most hassle-free way to obtain a visa

The Indian government’s online e-Visa portal can be used to apply for tourist visas, business visas, and visas for medical treatment and attending conferences. The cost and duration of the visa vary depending on your nationality, and you may need to show proof of return travel arrangements and sufficient funds to support yourself during your trip.

Rules for non-tourist visas can be complex. Business travelers usually need to provide letters of introduction from Indian companies and organizations that they plan to meet. Assuming you meet the requirements, business visas are usually valid for multiple entries over the space of one year.

Working for an Indian company is more complicated. You’ll need an employment visa and a work permit, and most people need a firm job offer and assistance from an Indian employer to complete the paperwork. As with all visa requirements, the situation is subject to change; contact your local Indian embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information.

Applying for a tourist e-Visa is fairly straightforward

To apply for an Indian e-Visa, visit the government’s official e-Visa portal . You’ll need to upload a digital passport-style photo and copies of your passport ID pages, and pay the visa fee, which varies depending on your nationality.

Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date of entry, and you’ll need two spare pages for the visa, which will be physically stamped into your passport on arrival. Assuming your application is accepted – which is the case for most applicants – you’ll receive a digital Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which you should print out and carry with you when you travel, so you can present it to the immigration authorities on arrival.

Enter India via air or sea on your e-Visa

E-Visas allow entry to India through 25 designated airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Bengaluru (Bangalore), Hyderabad, Kochi (Cochin), Goa, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Gaya, Jaipur, Lucknow, Trichy (Tiruchirappalli), Varanasi, Kozhikode (Calicut), Mangaluru (Mangalore), Pune, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Bagdogra, Guwahati, Chandigarh and Visakhapatnam.

They’re also valid for entry via the designated seaports at Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, New Mangalore and Mormugao (in Goa).

Apply for a visa before you travel to enter India overland

If you plan to enter India overland – for example, from Nepal or Pakistan – you’ll need a visa stamped into your passport before you leave home, which you’ll need to obtain from the Indian embassy or consulate in your home country, or through an approved visa application office.

If you plan to visit India and Nepal on the same trip, get a multiple-entry visa – it used to be possible to arrange a new Indian tourist visa through the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu , but the authorities may now insist on a two-month gap before issuing a new visa.

There’s no need to worry about applying for a visa for Nepal in advance – they’re available on arrival at border crossings (bring passport photos and US dollars to pay the fee).

If you can't apply for an e-Visa, get one in person in advance

Contact your local embassy or consulate to check the application process in your country; the Indian Ministry of External Affairs maintains a list of diplomatic missions online. It’s best to apply for a visa in your home country – obtaining an Indian visa from an embassy in another country can be tortuously slow, assuming it’s possible at all. Fees and the permitted duration of stay will vary depending on your nationality.

As an alternative to applying through an Indian embassy or consulate, you may be able to apply for a visa through a visa agency – however, this tends to be more expensive than applying directly. In practice, many of these agencies just collect together applications and then send over a staff member to the embassy to apply in person.

Student visas are available to those on full-time courses in India

Student visas are reserved for people enrolled in approved full-time educational courses in India (which can include training courses in yoga, meditation, and traditional Indian art forms). Student visas are valid for up to five years, depending on the length of the course, but the rules are strict, and you’ll need documentation from the institution where you are studying to apply. The Ministry of Home Affairs provides some information online, but contact your local Indian embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date requirements.

Extending your stay in India is for exceptional circumstances only

E-Visas cannot be extended, but other types of visas can, though only in exceptional circumstances, such as medical emergencies or theft of your passport. To apply, you’ll need to use the government’s special online portal , providing evidence of a valid reason for extending your stay in India (e.g., a letter from the hospital where you are being treated or a police report).

You may then be called in for an in-person interview at the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Delhi. If there is a fee, it will be made clear during the application process.

Some border areas in India require additional travel permits

Under a system carried over from British colonial rule, special permits (known as “protected area permits” or “restricted area permits”) are required to visit many areas close to India’s disputed external borders with China , Pakistan and other territories – a zone known as the “inner line.” Applying for these permits outside India is tricky, but you can apply locally in India without too much difficulty.

Permits are especially important for highly sensitive border areas (which tend to be off-limits to all travelers). Applications can be made through local government offices or local travel agencies; contact the state government offices for these regions to get the latest information. In some areas, you may need to register with the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office on arrival, but this is an easy process.

If you want to visit India, you must have a tourist visa to enter the country. The most common tourist visa is the eVisa (express visa), which allows you to stay in India for up to 30 days at a time. If you want to stay for more than 30 days, you'll need to apply through the nearest Indian diplomatic mission for a regular tourist visa, which allows you to stay for up to 6 months. Nationals of Japan, South Korea, and UAE may also be able to request a visa on arrival at the airport. [1] X Research source

Getting an eVisa

Step 1 Confirm that you are eligible for an eVisa.

  • You must have your own valid passport. An eVisa isn't available for other international travel documents or if you're endorsed on a parent's or spouse's passport.
  • Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity from the date of your application and 2 blank pages for your visa and stamps.
  • If you are a Pakistani national, you cannot get an eVisa. You must apply for a tourist visa at the nearest Indian diplomatic mission.

Step 2 Get visa photos taken.

  • Wear solid colored clothing without any discernible pattern or texture.
  • Passport photo services are available in pharmacies, camera shops, and many discount stores. If you get your photo taken there, they'll know the guidelines for Indian visa photos.

Step 3 Go to the Government of India eVisa website.

  • After you click that box, the next page asks basic information about your planned trip to India and the type of visa you want. For a tourist eVisa, you can choose one with 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years validity. Fees are higher for visas that are valid for a longer duration.

Exception: If you are in the US (regardless of your citizenship), India has outsourced tourist visa processing to Cox & Kings Global Services (CKGS). Go to in.ckgs.us/visa/tourist-visa to begin your application rather than going directly to the Government of India website.

Step 4 Complete your visa application.

  • If you hold any other valid passport, provide details about that passport and the nationality it represents.
  • If you've previously had a visa to India, give the dates you last traveled to the country along with a brief description of what you did there.

Tip: You may need to upload digital scans of other documents to support your application. The website will prompt you for those documents and provide a checklist at the end of the application so you can make sure you've included all required documents.

Step 5 Submit your completed application to the Government of India.

  • If you live in the US, when you click the button to submit your application, you'll be redirected to the CKGS website. Print a copy of your application before you leave the Government of India site. You'll need it to finish the application process.

Step 6 Pay your eVisa fee online.

  • For a table of all fees that is accurate as of January 2020, go to https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/images/Etourist_fee_final.pdf .

Tip: If you're applying from the US, CKGS advises that you submit a check or money order for your fees along with your application, rather than paying online.

Step 7 Finish your application with CKGS if you live in the US.

  • CKGS has supplementary forms and letters for you to fill out. You'll also need to print out a copy of the Document Checklist. Use this checklist to make sure you've included all the required documents with your application.

Step 8 Send your US application to the CKGS application center.

  • CKGS has application centers in San Francisco and New York. If you live in or near one of those cities, choose "walk-in" if you want to take your application to the center in person. You can schedule an appointment on the CKGS website. If you choose walk-in submission, you'll need to get new fingerprints taken.
  • Processing of your application starts when your physical application is received by CKGS. In most cases, your ETA will be ready in 24 to 48 hours. You can view the status of your application and estimated processing time from your account on the CKGS website.

Step 9 Check your email for your electronic travel document (ETA).

  • It's a good idea to save the email in case you lose your print-out. You'll still have to print it again to give to the visa officer at the port of entry, but at least you'll have it.

Step 10 Present your ETA at the port of entry.

  • Keep your passport with you at all times while you're traveling in India. If you lose your passport, your visa may not be reissued until you leave the country.

Applying for a Long-Term Tourist Visa

Step 1 Locate the nearest Indian diplomatic mission.

  • For example, India has only 2 diplomatic missions in the US that handle visa applications: one in San Francisco and the other in New York.
  • Go to https://www.mea.gov.in/indian-missions-abroad-new.htm and click on the name of the country where you live to find the Indian missions in your country.

Step 2 Complete your visa application form online.

  • If you don't have time to complete the application in one session or need to look up additional information, you can save your application and return to it later.
  • The regular visa application requires more information than the eVisa application, including details about your criminal background and employment.

Step 3 Upload a digital photo to accompany your visa application.

  • Even if you plan to submit a paper application rather than submitting your application electronically, you still need a digital photo for your application. The digital photo will be used for your visa.

Step 4 Submit your visa application.

  • Select "yes" if you want to schedule your appointment and pay your visa application fees online. You'll still need to print your application and sign it to take with you to your appointment.
  • Select "no" if you simply want to print out your application form without making an online payment.

Warning: Online payment and scheduling are not available for all diplomatic missions. If the diplomatic mission nearest you does not accept online payments, submit your payment in person at the mission, along with your paper application and supporting documents.

Step 5 Gather supporting documents to accompany your application.

  • Your passport, showing at least 6 months of validity and 2 blank pages
  • Proof of residence (mortgage statement, lease, or utility bill) [17] X Research source

Step 6 Take your printed application and documents to your appointment.

  • Answer any questions the consular officer asks you completely and honestly. If the officer needs additional information or documents, they'll let you know.
  • At the conclusion of your interview, the consular officer will let you know if your application has been accepted and when your visa will be ready. You can either return to the mission to pick it up or have it mailed to you.

Requesting a Visa on Arrival (VoA)

Step 1 Confirm that you are eligible for VoA services.

  • Make sure your passport shows at least 6 months' validity and has 2 blank pages available for your visa stamps.
  • You are not eligible to get a VoA if you were ever a Pakistani national or permanent resident, or if either of your parents or grandparents was born in or was a permanent resident of Pakistan.

Step 2 Complete your application form before you leave.

  • Download the form at https://boi.gov.in/sites/default/files/Annexure-I.pdf . You'll have to print it to fill it out. Use an ink pen to fill out the application in English using block capital letters.

Tip: If you don't have the opportunity to download and fill out the VoA application before you leave, you can also pick one up on board your flight or at the visa counter at the airport.

Step 3 Fill out your disembarkation card on the plane.

  • This card requires your name and date of birth as they appear on your passport, your passport number, flight number, and date of arrival. You'll also need to provide the address where you'll be staying in India as well as a list of the countries you've visited in the last 6 days. [22] X Research source

Step 4 Present your application and passport to the Visa Officer.

  • Keep your passport on you at all times while traveling in India. Pay attention to the expiration date on your visa and make sure you don't overstay it.

Visas for India

visa and passport

Just like any other country, India requires you to have a valid visa and a passport for staying in the country. Except for nationals of a few neighbouring countries, most of the foreigners who wish to travel to India are required to apply for a visa.

Once you are issued a visa by the immigration authorities you can enjoy your stay in the country for the duration permitted. There are different types of visas available like the transit visa, the tourist visa, the business visa, the employment visa, the student visa, the research visa, etc. Make sure to enquire about procedures and required documents before proceeding so as to avoid any unnecessary hassles.

Transit visa in India

A transit visa is a short period visa that allows the holder to pass through a country during a journey. You will need to have a transit visa if you have a stopover in India before reaching your final destination in another country. The transit visa is a double-entry visa which is valid for 15 days. However, it's important you have the possession of your travel tickets for your next flight on your arrival in India. Otherwise, you will not be authorized into the transit area.

Tourism visa in India

If you are planning to travel to India for a vacation or to take part in an event, you can request a tourist visa. The tourist visa is valid for 90 days, except for the citizens of the US, UK, Japan and Canada where validity is six months (180 days) upon each visit. In some cases, you can even be eligible for a one-year visa, provided you make several 90 days stay in the country. Extension of stay is not allowed on tourist visas and it cannot be converted into any other visa. You can even apply for a five-year tourist visa if you have a tourism-related business. In the case of a tourist visa with a duration of more than 180 days, you are required to register with the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to your place of residence within 14 days following your arrival in the country.

Business visa in India

If you are moving to India for business purposes, you must apply for a business visa. A business visa is valid for one year or more with multiple entries. Each visit should not exceed 180 days for nationals of all countries that are eligible. One year business visas in some cases can be reduced. On the other hand, you can be eligible for a five-year business visa, if you can prove that your business activities are particularly important for the country's economy. However, usually with a business visa, each visit is limited to six months.

Entry visa in India

The entry visa is a long stay multiple-entry visa with a variable duration of either six months, a year, or even more. In general, it applies to persons of Indian origin, their spouses and children. Foreigners too (accompanied with family) who have secured an employment contract in India, or who intend to perform an internship can also apply for this visa.

The principal visa holder's visa must be issued first before the spouse and dependant family members can apply. Finally, high-level alpinists, as well as aged foreigners looking forward to a spiritual retirement in India can also apply for the entry visa.

Like in the case of foreigners with a tourist visa, you are also required to register with the nearest FRRO to your place of residence within 14 days following your arrival if you intend to make a more than six months stay in India.

Student visa in India

If you wish to pursue higher education in India , you will need a student visa. Multiple-entry student visas are given to bona fide students to pursue regular studies at recognised universities. You can even apply for a student visa to perform an internship or to register for language or art classes in the country. The student visa is valid for a period of study as approved by the educational institute in India.

A provisional visa can be issued several in the event that an admission test is pending or other requirements have yet to be fulfilled, or when the applicant doesn't receive a confirmation letter from the university or Institute. This visa is valid for three months which cannot be extended. If the admission is not confirmed in the stipulated period the student will have to leave India.

Internship visa in India

To perform an internship in India, you can apply either for a long-stay visa or for a student visa. These visas generally have variants, that is the X visa and the E visa which allow an extension of the visa's initial duration period. However, it is always better to inquire on related conditions and criteria with Indian diplomatic representations in your home country.

Special authorisations in India

For security purposes, India has put certain restrictions regarding access to some regions in India. These areas include Sikkim, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman Islands and Nicobar, as well as the Kashmir borders. So, if you wish to travel to any of these restricted regions, you will have to obtain special authorisation and permits from the respective authorities.

Visa application procedures

Different countries may have different application procedures for applying for visas . Also, the cost involved in applying for a visa also differs from country to country.

When applying for a visa, you will generally have to produce the following:

  • your passport (which should be valid for at least six months following your trip to India, including three blank pages)
  • a duly filled visa application form
  • two passport-size identity photos
  • a health certificate proving that you are not suffering from any contagious disease
  • a copy of your return tickets or tickets of the following destination in the case of a transit visa
  • a support letter in the case of a business trip (specifying the purpose and estimated duration of your stay and your host's contact details) and an invitation letter issued by your host.

Other documents may also be requested according to the purpose of your stay (work, studies, internship, etc.).

India restores tourist visas 2 years after suspension due to Covid-19

The valid e-tourist visas issued for five years stand restored to nationals of 156 countries with immediate effect. the regular paper tourist visa, which has a validity of five years and is issued to nationals of all the countries, has also been restored..

NEW DELHI: Almost two years after international travel was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Centre has decided to restore all categories of tourist visas for foreign nationals.

The Centre has decided to restore all categories of tourist visas for foreign nationals keeping in view the improvement in Covid-19 situation in the country. (File/PTI)

An order issued by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) on Tuesday said it has considered the need for further relaxation of visa and travel restrictions keeping in view the improvement in Covid-19 situation in India.

The ministry said that the valid e-tourist visas issued for five years shall stand restored to nationals of 156 countries with immediate effect. Fresh five-year e-tourist visas to the citizens of these 156 countries will also be issued.

The regular paper tourist visa, which has a validity of five years and is issued to nationals of all the countries, has also been restored. Similarly, long duration 10 year regular tourist visa to the citizens of the United States and Japan has also been restored and new ones will be issued with immediate effect, the ministry said.

All these visas were suspended in March 2020, when regular international flights were stopped.

Earlier in October 2020, a graded relaxation in visa and travel restrictions was done for foreign and Indian nationals, who wanted to come to India for business, conferences, employment, studies and research purposes except the tourist visas.

The tourist visas were opened for the first time in 18 months from November 15 last year but that too only for travel in chartered flights.

Several states, including Goa as well as stakeholders in the tourism sector had written to MHA seeking to allow tourists to enter India once again through regular international flights as the tourism sector was getting affected.

The decision to allow all tourists has been taken after discussion with the ministries of civil aviation, tourism, health, external affairs and the state governments as the number of Covid-19 cases in the country is below 3,000 cases per day.

Tuesday’s order, which has been shared with the Indian embassies, said the foreign nationals on tourist/e-tourist visas may enter India only through designated sea immigration check posts (ICPs) or airports by flights, including those under Vande Bharat mission or ‘air bubble’ or by any other flights.

The government has already decided to allow regular international flight operations from March 27. Scheduled international flight services have remained suspended in India since March 23 , 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The order said in no case, the foreign nationals will be allowed to enter the country through land border or riverine routes on tourist visas. A separate order will be issued for the opening of land borders soon.

The latest order will also not apply to Afghan nationals, who, the ministry said, will continue to be governed separately through e-Emergency X-Misc visa. This new category of visa for Afghan citizens was introduced in August last year as thousands of Afghans were looking to flee the country and seek refuge in other countries including India following Taliban’s takeover of the country on August 15.

Broadly, there are about 21 categories of visas given by India with various sub-categories including tourist visa, medical visa, business visa, conference visa, student and research visa, missionary visa, film visa, journalist visa, sports visa, intern visa etc.

“All categories of visas are now allowed to travel to India,” said a MHA official, requesting anonymity.

Introduction

India, with its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant cities, is a fascinating destination for travelers from around the world. Whether you are planning a leisurely vacation or a pilgrimage to its ancient temples, obtaining the right visa is crucial for a hassle-free entry into the country. Among the various types of visas available, the tourist visa is one of the most common options for those visiting India for recreational purposes.

In this article, we will delve into the details of the Indian tourist visa, exploring the duration of stay allowed, the process for extensions and renewals, as well as the consequences of overstaying on a tourist visa. Additionally, we will provide some useful tips to help you maximize your stay while exploring the wonders of India.

It’s important to note that India has implemented a new e-visa system, which allows tourists to apply for and receive their visa online. This has significantly simplified the application process, making it more convenient for travelers. However, it is still essential to understand the rules and regulations surrounding the duration of stay to avoid any potential complications.

So, if you’re planning a memorable journey to India, let’s dive into the intricacies of the tourist visa and learn how long you can stay in this captivating country.

Overview of Tourist Visa for India

Before embarking on your journey to India, it’s vital to have a clear understanding of the tourist visa requirements. The tourist visa allows individuals to visit India for recreational purposes such as tourism, sightseeing, and visiting friends and family.

The Indian tourist visa is a non-immigrant visa that is granted for a temporary stay in the country. It falls under the category of a short-term visa and is typically issued for a duration of up to 90 days. However, it’s important to note that the duration may vary based on the country of your citizenship and the discretion of the Indian authorities.

To apply for a tourist visa, you will need to provide essential documents such as a valid passport with a minimum of six months validity, a completed visa application form, recent passport-size photographs, proof of financial means to support your stay, and a confirmed return flight ticket.

It’s worth mentioning that individuals of certain nationalities may be eligible for the Indian e-visa, which allows for a shorter duration of stay of up to 30 days, with the option for double or triple entry. The e-visa can be obtained online, providing a convenient and efficient way to secure your visa before arrival.

Once you have obtained your tourist visa, you are ready to embark on your Indian adventure. However, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the rules regarding the duration of stay and any potential extensions or renewals.

Now that we have covered the basics, let’s explore the maximum duration of stay permitted on a tourist visa in India.

Duration of Stay Allowed on a Tourist Visa

The duration of stay allowed on a tourist visa for India varies depending on several factors. Typically, a tourist visa is granted for a maximum duration of 90 days. However, it’s important to note that this duration can be further extended under certain circumstances.

Upon entry into India, the immigration officer will stamp your passport with the duration you are permitted to stay. It’s crucial to check your passport stamp and ensure that the number of days granted aligns with your travel plans.

If you wish to extend your stay beyond the initial 90-day period, you can apply for an extension at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) in the city where you are currently residing. The application for an extension should be submitted before your visa expires. The extension allows you to stay in India for an additional period, which is subject to approval.

The extension process typically requires relevant documentation, such as a filled-out application form, proof of financial means to support your stay, a copy of your passport and visa, and any other documents requested by the authorities. It’s important to note that approval for an extension is at the discretion of the Indian authorities, and there is no guarantee that your request will be granted.

Additionally, if you are traveling to India for specific purposes such as medical treatment, business meetings, or academic conferences, you may be eligible for a different type of visa that allows for a longer duration of stay. It’s advisable to consult with the Indian embassy or consulate in your home country to determine the most suitable visa for your specific travel needs.

It’s important to bear in mind that overstaying on a tourist visa in India can have serious consequences. Let’s explore the implications of overstaying in the following section.

Extensions and Renewals of Tourist Visa

If you find yourself needing to extend your stay in India beyond the initial duration granted on your tourist visa, there are processes in place to facilitate extensions and renewals. It’s crucial to be aware of these procedures to avoid any legal complications.

To extend your stay in India, you will need to visit the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) in the city where you are currently residing. It’s important to begin the extension process before your visa expires. The extension allows you to legally prolong your stay in the country, subject to approval.

The extension process typically involves submitting an application form, paying the required fees, and providing relevant documentation. The documents may include a filled-out application form, proof of financial means to support your extended stay, a copy of your passport and visa, and any other documents requested by the authorities.

It’s important to note that the approval of visa extensions is at the discretion of the Indian authorities. The decision is based on various factors such as the purpose of your stay, your financial stability, and your adherence to the immigration regulations. Therefore, it’s crucial to provide all the necessary documents and demonstrate valid reasons for the extension.

If your visa extension is approved, you will be granted a new duration of stay in India. It’s important to keep in mind that even with an approved extension, the total duration of stay cannot exceed a specific limit, as determined by the Indian government.

In some cases, you may find it more convenient to return to your home country and apply for a new tourist visa if you wish to stay longer in India. This process is known as visa renewal. By departing from India and reapplying for a new tourist visa, you can start your stay afresh with a new duration of stay permitted.

It’s worth mentioning that the rules and procedures for visa extensions and renewals may vary slightly depending on the specific circumstances and the discretion of the Indian authorities. Consulting the FRRO or the Indian embassy/consulate in your home country is advisable to ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information on the extension or renewal process.

Now that we understand the extension and renewal processes, let’s explore the potential consequences of overstaying on a tourist visa in India.

Overstaying on a Tourist Visa in India

Overstaying on a tourist visa in India can have serious consequences, and it is crucial to adhere to the stipulated duration of stay granted on your visa. If you exceed the allowed period, you may face various legal and administrative complications.

Firstly, overstaying on a tourist visa is considered a violation of Indian immigration laws. The Indian authorities take visa overstays seriously and may impose penalties and fines for the duration of unauthorized stay. These fines can accumulate and become quite substantial, depending on the length of overstay.

Furthermore, overstaying on a tourist visa can also result in future difficulties in obtaining visas for India or even other countries. Immigration authorities of other countries may consider the overstaying record when evaluating future visa applications, which could lead to visa rejections or increased scrutiny during the application process.

Moreover, if you overstay on a tourist visa in India for an extended period, you may be subject to an immigration ban or restriction, preventing you from entering the country for a specified period. This can significantly impact future travel plans and limit your ability to visit India in the future.

In some cases, overstaying on a tourist visa can also lead to detention and deportation. If the authorities discover your overstay, you may be detained, questioned, and deported from India. This can result in significant inconvenience, financial expenses, and even reputational damage.

Therefore, it is crucial to strictly adhere to the stipulated duration of stay granted on your tourist visa. If you find that you need to extend your stay, it is advisable to follow the proper procedures for visa extension or renewal, as discussed in the previous section.

Now that we understand the potential consequences of overstaying, let’s explore some tips to maximize your stay on a tourist visa in India.

Consequences of Overstaying on a Tourist Visa

Overstaying on a tourist visa in India can have several serious consequences. It’s crucial to understand the potential legal and administrative ramifications to avoid any complications during your stay in the country.

First and foremost, overstaying on a tourist visa is considered a violation of Indian immigration laws. As a result, you may be subject to fines and penalties for each day of unauthorized stay. These fines can accumulate and become quite substantial, depending on the length of your overstay. Additionally, you may be required to pay the fines before you are allowed to leave the country.

Moreover, overstaying on a tourist visa can also have long-term implications for your future travel plans. Immigration authorities of other countries may take into account your record of visa overstays when evaluating future visa applications. This can result in visa rejections or increased scrutiny during the application process, making it more challenging to visit other countries in the future.

In addition to financial penalties and potential travel restrictions, overstaying on a tourist visa in India can lead to legal consequences. If the immigration authorities discover your overstay, you may be detained, questioned, and potentially deported from the country. This can result in significant inconvenience, financial expenses, and even reputational damage.

Furthermore, an overstay on a tourist visa can lead to an immigration ban or restriction. This means that you may be prohibited from entering India for a specified period of time, making it difficult or even impossible to visit the country in the future. This can have a significant impact on your travel plans and opportunities.

To avoid these consequences, it is essential to keep track of the duration of stay permitted on your tourist visa and make necessary arrangements if you need to extend your stay. It’s advisable to apply for an extension or renewal before your visa expires to ensure legal compliance and a smooth travel experience.

Now that we have explored the potential consequences of overstaying, let’s move on to some valuable tips for maximizing your stay on a tourist visa in India.

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

Schengen Visa Update: Long-Term Multiple Entry Options for Indian Nationals

Indian nationals can now apply for long-term schengen visas for 29 european countries, making the process easier with multiple entries and extended validity..

Schengen Visa Update: Long-Term Multiple Entry Options for Indian Nationals

Key Takeaways:

  • New Schengen visa rules for Indians enable multiple entries, extended validity spanning 29 European countries from April 18.
  • “Cascade” visa system grants two-year visa initially, extending to five years for Indian travelers with positive visa history.
  • 29 European countries welcome Indian visitors under the new visa regime, promoting tourism and business, restricted from working.

What are the New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Nationals?

Great news for Indian travelers! The European Commission has announced exciting changes that simplify the process for Indians applying for Schengen visas. Starting from April 18, a new visa regime allows Indian nationals to obtain multiple entry visas with extended validity, permitting easier access to 29 European countries.

Schengen Visa Update: Long-Term Multiple Entry Options for Indian Nationals

How Does the New Visa “Cascade” Regime Benefit Indian Travelers?

The newly adopted “cascade” system is designed to offer more favorable terms than ever before. Initially, Indian applicants can secure a long-term, multiple-entry visa that remains valid for two years. This is possible for those who, during the past three years, have successfully obtained and properly used two visas.

Following the two-year visa, and provided the Indian passport remains valid, travelers can then receive a visa for five years. These extended visas allow holders to travel freely within the Schengen area, with travel rights almost akin to those of visa-free nationals.

Which Countries Can Be Visited With This Visa?

The Schengen area is quite extensive, encompassing 29 European nations. This includes 25 European Union states such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland, along with four non-EU countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Whether for tourism or business, visa holders can enjoy up to 90 days of travel within a 180-day period in these countries, although it does not permit the right to work.

Why These Changes Now?

The implementation of these updated rules on issuing Schengen visas to Indian nationals stems from an effort to strengthen migration and mobility cooperation under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility. This policy framework aims to enhance cooperation on migration strategies between the EU and India, recognizing the benefits of simplified visa processing.

These changes mark a significant improvement in the mobility of Indian nationals across Europe, promising easier and more frequent travel within the Schengen zone. For more detailed information on these visa rules and how they might affect your travel plans, visit the official European Commission migration and home affairs page .

By simplifying the visa application process and extending the validity periods of issued visas, the European Commission not only enhances the travel experience for Indian nationals but also fosters stronger ties and greater understanding between Europe and India.

Take your time enjoying these destinations..

long term tourist visa india

Every country in the world has different rules about how long visitor visas can be. There are some destinations where slow travel is easier than others.

Some countries are strict. China will require a detailed day by day itinerary of your trip if you want to stay for more than 30 days. If you want to visit Turkmenistan you have to sign up for an approved tour and book all of your hotels in advance. In Russia, you have to go through a complex application process.

In contrast, many other countries make it incredibly easy to visit. You can enter as a tourist with very little restrictions, and stay for a while on long visitor visas. This gives you a chance to take your time, travel slowly and really enjoy your destination. The following list features some beautiful countries where obtaining a visitor visa is relatively smooth and you’ll be able to stay for a generous amount of time.

Please note: The visas I am talking about in this post are tourist visas, NOT Working Holiday Visas. A visitor visa is a special travel document that you need to have in order to enter a foreign country (in addition to your passport, of course.)

If you want to find out where you can work abroad, please see our guide: Which Countries Offer Working Holiday Visas?

long visitor visas in Georgia

If you follow this blog, you might notice that I rave a LOT about Georgia. I love this somewhat obscure Caucasus country for a lot of reasons: the stunning snow-covered mountains, the delicious hearty meat dumplings, the crumbling houses with their ornate balconies, the vibrant art and culture scene… But another reason to love Georgia is its incredibly welcoming long visitor visas.

When you enter Georgia as a tourist, you can stay for up to a YEAR. Yup, you read that right. You can travel around this gorgeous country for 12 months , eating khinkali, bathing in hot springs and drinking qvevri wine on rooftop patios. The Georgians have a saying that a guest is a “gift from god” – so perhaps that’s why they generously give their guests so much time to enjoy themselves.

Who is Eligible for This Visa?

Here’s the list of 94 countries whose citizens are eligible for this long visitor visa , including all EU states, USA, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

long visitor visas for Malaysia

Lee and I ended up in Malaysia pretty randomly. We needed to book an ongoing flight out of Thailand, and tickets to Kuala Lumpur happened to be the cheapest deal on the internet that particular day. It’s a good thing we did, because we loved it and ended up staying for the full 3 months the long visitor visas allowed.

Malaysia is one of the most hassle free countries to enter as visitor. Rarely do they ask you where you are going or demand to see proof of funds or travel bookings. It’s super easy.

If you want to stay longer, you could take a quick trip to Singapore or Brunei for a while, then start the 90 day clock ticking again.

Lee and I met a guy who had lived in Malaysia for 30 years, simply hopping across the border and back into the country every 3 months. (While I would NOT recommend doing this, it’s kind of amazing and it’s hard to imagine something like that happening in other countries.)

Citizens of 63 countries are eligible for this long visitor visa , including all European citizens, New Zealand, Japan, USA, Canada, Australia and Iceland.

long visitor visas in Ecuador

Ecuador not only has lush jungles, beautiful beaches and fantastic hiking trails – it also has a wonderfully lenient visa policy. Citizens of most countries will not need to obtain a visa before visiting.

When you arrive in Ecuador you’ll get 90 days visa free (other restrictions may apply to the Galapagos Islands). You also have the option to extend your tourist visa.

Ecuador is a great place to enjoy a slow, chilled out pace of travel. Whether you want to spend your 3 months surfing on the beach, enjoying city life in Quito or Cuenca or hiking in the Amazon – it’s worth taking the time to explore.

Citizens of every country in the world are eligible for this long visitor visa. There are certain countries whose citizens must apply for the visa in advance , including Afghanistan, Kenya, Nepal and Cuba.

panama long visitor visas

As long as you don’t mind having the Van Halen song stuck in your head during your visit, I’d highly recommend spending some time in Panama.

Citizens of most Western countries can obtain a 180 day tourist visa upon arrival in Panama. Yup, that’s right. You can walk into Panama and hang out there for 6 months if you want to.

Panama City is beautiful, with cobblestone streets and historic colonial architecture. But you can also head to somewhere like Bocas del Toro and swing in a hammock in the sea breeze for a while. Of course, don’t miss the chance to see the country’s most famous engineering marvel – the Panama Canal .

Here is the full list of countries whose citizens are eligible to stay in Panama for 180 days . It includes all EU countries, Australia, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Brazil, Georgia and Mexico.

australia long visitor visa

The Electronic Travel Authority Visa for Australia has replaced the previous more complicated visitor visa. It is a multiple entry visa that will allow you to enter the country unlimited times during the validity period of 12 months. You can stay in Australia for a maximum of three months on each visit. This makes it one of the more flexible long visitor visas on this list.

The visa does not grant employment rights, but you can do “business visitor activities” like making negotiations, attending conferences, etc. Studying is allowed on this visa.

If you’re below the age of 35 and from one of the eligible countries, you might consider an Australian Working Holiday Visa instead. This will allow you to stay for 12 consecutive months and get a job while you are there.

To apply for the Electronic Travel Authority Visa for Australia you must have an eligible passport. Here’s the list of countries whose citizens Australia allows to apply for this visa . The list includes Canada, Ireland, Germany, France, Greece, UK, USA and Malaysia.

seychelles long visitor visas

Seychelles, a gorgeous tropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, is incredibly open for tourists. It is a “visa free” country which means that citizens from anywhere in the world can visit for up to three months upon arrival. It’s an exciting option to consider if you’re looking for destinations with long visitor visas.

Located about 900 miles off the coast of East Africa, the Republic of Seychelles has 115 different islands – many of which are uninhabited. Not only does it have long visitor visas, but it also features stunning beaches, jungles and mountains. Some truly impressive creatures inhabit these remote islands, including giant tortoises.

All foreign nationals visiting the Seychelles are granted visa free access – except holders of Kosovo passports who are not allowed to enter.

long visitor visas Albania

Albania is another beautiful country with long visitor visas of 90 days. This is great news, because this small European country is definitely worth exploring.

There’s the vibrant capital city of Tirana (with a beautiful lakeside park), pristine beaches along the south coast, cool museums and art galleries and plenty of archeological ruins. This makes it a very appealing option if you’re looking for places to travel with long visitor visas. Lee and I were there in the winter, but I’d love to head back in the summer and check out the stunning coastline.

Visitors from these 85 jurisdictions can enter Albania without a visa and stay for 90 days, including all EU countries, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, USA, Iceland and more. Also, any visitor who has a valid multiple entry visa from a Schengen country, the USA or the UK can enter Albania without a visa for 90 days (as long as the visa was previously used at least once.) And apparently, Americans can stay in Albania for up to a year without having to apply for a residency permit!

long visitor visas

Imagine having 6 months to dine on fresh ceviche in Lima, attend a chocolate making workshop in Cusco, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and venture down into Colca Canyon . The generous visitor visa policy in Peru makes it easy to travel this country as slowly as you like. From the Amazon jungle to the mysterious Nazca Lines to the floating reed islands of Lake Titicaca, there is enough to explore in Peru that the 6 months will simply fly by.

Note: According to Peruvian law, foreign visitors must have an onward ticket booked to leave the country. Your airline might demand to see your booking before you check in. They will accept a bus ticket or an airline ticket, so make sure you have it booked!

Citizens from 99 countries can visit Peru without a visa for up to 183 days, for tourism purposes. The list includes Argentina, Australia, USA, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Japan and all EU member countries.

long visitor visas Fiji

It would be easy to relax on Fiji for a while – an island lined where thatched-roof bungalows sit on tropical beaches fringed with lush jungle. Beneath the crystal clear water you’ll find stunning soft coral formations and thousands of species of colourful fish. This idyllic getaway is also known for its top quality spas, world-class golf and luxurious resorts.

Or, if you want a more rustic experience you can also take jungle trek tours. Cruise down a river in a canoe, pluck ripe papayas from the trees and camp in the wilderness.

Citizens of 107 countries do not require a visa when visiting Fiji for up to 4 months. The list includes all EU countries (except Croatia) as well as Canada, Chile, China, USA, South Africa, Japan and many more. You will be issued a visitor permit on arrival and you may extend it on application for up to two months at a time.

svalbard long visitor visas

The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is a completely visa free zone. Yes, you read that right. Everybody can live and work in Svalbard for as long as they want, regardless of country of citizenship.

Sounds great, right? The only downside is that it’s a tiny frozen town surrounded by polar bears and engulfed in 24 hour darkness for 6 months of the year. The cost of living is high and it’s pretty remote. It would be near impossible to find a job in this tiny village, but if you work online that wouldn’t be a problem. You can read more about Svalbard here . This reddit thread about what it’s like to live there is also pretty fascinating.

Everyone in the world. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true .

PS. If you plan to travel for several months at a time in these countries with long visitor visas, make sure you take it slow and don’t try to squeeze too much into your itinerary . Long term travel requires a different pace than a shorter vacation, otherwise it can lead to burnout .

Great article Kelly! But I don’t see a date or sources.

Exactly! No date. Super annoying huh?

Exactly! No indication of when it was published. Super annoying huh? And to make matters worse, when I tried to use the word “d a t e” in this comment it was blocked because I was told it had already been said. WTF? You can tell this is not a professional writer. Then again, she’s from Canada, so…

Hahahaha what does being from Canada have to do with it?

Some rando hater who has probably never been anywhere…..which means an American, typically….my countrymen are an embarrassment….americans are on the whole geographically ‘tarded….

I have stayed in UK for 6 months of tourist visa. UK is not listed above.

ARMENIA provides 6 months tourist visas. Not listed above. A somewhat shoddy article.

This information not posted before…..

Hah! Agreed. I ran into the same problem. And she writes things like there’s a 90 day stay limit in Albania, but then adds “apparently Americans can stay up to a year without a visa”. As if it’s just an irrelevant afterthought with little importance and that doesn’t expressly contradict the info provided immediately prior.

In sum, shoddy indeed.

Because not all of us consider America particularly important maybe? Very useful article, thanks Kelly.

nice enough article but really outdated information, and frustrating to see comments so grateful and trusting. I travel full time- much herein is incorrect.

and Americans on the whole do not know the existence of any of these places, because they do not travel….the entire world has gone global with the exception of the US citizens….

I really appreciate the kind of topics post here. Thanks for sharing us a great information that is actually helpful.

At the beginning of the article, you mention that China requires a day by day itinerary of your trip if you want to stay for more than 30 days. This is simply not true. You only need to show proof of your return flight, and where you’re going to stay (hotel reservation, family/friend’s address, etc). I have a 10-year tourist visa for China, and spent 2.5 years living there (doing visa runs every sixty days to Hong Kong). In all those trips, they only asked for my flight/hotel when I first applied for my visa at the Chinese embassy. They never asked for, or mentioned, a day by day itinerary.

Hi I enjoyed it But sadly the covid madness will have put paid to many places we can go An update would be great

Australia has one the hardest countries in the world to get tourist visa unless you are from certain Western Countries or Japan, Korea etc. Yes Canadian, yankees and Brits can come here on a working holiday visa but it is not same for 2/3 of United Nation member countries. Not sure where you are getting these incorrect info from as I live here all my life and traveled to to 4 corners of the world

This looks at first glance to be good stuff. But before I could even start reading I couldn’t get past the fact that I saw no date of publication at the outset or top (or anywhere) of the page.

WHY, WHY, WHY do authors so often omit the DATE of publication on their posts, articles, blogs, etc??? It is maddeningly annoying and frustrating and simply terrible journalistic practice. The date of publication is almost always extremely important for readers for many reasons. This is especially true for an article and subject like this. Where laws and rules are notorious for frequent changes. So with the foregoing in mind, when was this article written and published?

January 20th, 2019.

This article gives a good overview. Write your own article if you are unhappy with what you are reading, and stop perpetuating bitter, ugly behavior. There are ways to politely make suggestions. Rudeness is not required. Thank you for the article Kelly.

You remarked that you would be surprised if there were more countries that allow you to cross a foreign border and return. There are many Europeans that live in Vietnam that do exactly this; it’s called a Visa Run. Take a shuttle van to the nearest border every 90 days to get your passbook stamped, then return for another 90 days. There are actually several countries that still allow this; Thailand used to allow it, but no longer. I have lived in Cusco, Peru to see Machu Picchu for 6 months while also having a guide on the Amazon River for a couple of the most amazing weeks ever. I lived for 6 months on Coronado Bay in Panama while also visiting Costa Rica. I spent a few months on Penang Island in Malaysia before I went to live in Phuket and Koh Samui for 2 years, then 2 years in Da Nang, Vietnam before being forced back to the horrible US due to Covid. As soon as Thailand opened back up for tourism last May, I was on the flight that landed in Bangkok after midnight. I currently live in Jomtien Beach in Pattaya. I am purchasing a sea view condo here; the best authentic food and street food in the world, and countless restaurants to order delivery from. A few dollars to rent a motorbike per day, taxis that are amazingly cheap and pick you up anywhere…I can order any item I need and have it delivered to my door for pennies. The cost of living is amazing in tropical paradise; I have plenty of money to visit resorts on Koh Chang and other islands that have private beaches, travel to the Mekong, Chiang Mai….I love SE Asia, I think this is the best overall territory on earth….. ; )

Explained: How New Schengen Visa Rules Ease Europe Travel For Indians

A Schengen visa permits a brief stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe.

The European Union (EU) recently introduced a revamped visa system tailored specifically for Indian nationals. This new system offers substantial advantages to Indian citizens, allowing them access to long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, which can significantly streamline travel plans and enhance the overall experience for those venturing into the Schengen area.

What Is Schengen Visa

The Schengen area comprises 25 countries out of the 27 EU countries except the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus. It includes countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This extensive area not only offers diverse cultural experiences but also facilitates seamless travel across borders for visa holders.

A Schengen visa permits a brief stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. This visa may be issued as either a single-entry, enabling one entry into the Schengen area, or a multiple-entry, allowing multiple visits for the duration of its validity.

How The New Rules Affect Indians

Under the new regulations, Indian travellers can now obtain a two-year Schengen visa, a marked improvement from the shorter validity periods previously available. To qualify for this extended two-year visa, applicants must have acquired and appropriately utilised two Schengen visas within the preceding three years. Upon successful utilisation of the two-year visa, travellers can typically expect to be eligible for a five-year Schengen visa, provided their passport maintains sufficient validity.

The new rules essentially say that Indian travellers can move freely within the Schengen member countries for short stays, typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period, without the need for additional permits or authorisations. Under this system, eligible travellers with a proven track record of travel will have simplified access to visas with extended validity, provided their passport's validity permits.

The 'Cascade' system, as it's termed, is designed to reward frequent travellers with progressively longer visa durations. It begins with a two-year visa, and upon successful use, travellers can potentially qualify for a five-year visa. While these visas do not restrict the purpose of travel, they do not allow the right to work within the Schengen area.

The decision to tweak the rules comes in the broader context of improving relations between the EU and India

New Schengen visa rules announced; longer validity and easier access to Indian nationals

T he European Commission's recent initiative, approved on April 18th, marks a shift from the traditional Visa Code regulations for Indian nationals. These updated rules provide more advantageous terms for acquiring multiple entry visas, demonstrating the EU's commitment to enhancing relations with India and encouraging tourism and business interactions between the two regions.

Under the newly adopted visa "cascade" regime for India, Indian nationals are eligible for long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas with extended validity. To qualify for a two-year visa, individuals must have obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. Following this, if their passport has sufficient validity remaining, they can typically receive a five-year visa.

The EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility includes implementing a new regime to enhance cooperation between the two regions. This move emphasises the importance of fostering people-to-people contacts to strengthen ties between the EU and India in various areas.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely within the Schengen area, which consists of 29 European countries, including 25 EU member states and four non-EU countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). These visas permit short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Multiple entry Schengen visa for Indians: Here's what you should know

 alt=

New Delhi: It was recently announced that frequent Indian travellers to Europe will be able to apply for a multiple-entry Schengen visa of up to five years, with the European Commission effecting certain changes in existing rules. The visa allows the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180 days. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. "On April 18, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the visa code that applied to date," an EU readout said. It said this new visa 'cascade' regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history.

"According to the newly adopted visa 'cascade' regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years," the readout said. "The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals," it said. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries of which 25 are EU states. The countries are Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
